In this episode, we're joined by David Martell, formerly of Chargemaster  and co-founder of home EV charging brand EVIOS. David is here to talk about the growth of EVIOS and Andersen EV, which was acquired by EVIOS last year, as well as the role of home charging in the UK's transition to EVs. Having been involved in both sides of the industry, we also ask David if there is too much emphasis on the role of public charging infrastructure, and what the future of EV home charging could look like.

The EV6 is also the first of Kia’s next-generation BEVs to be developed under a new design philosophy that embodies Kia’s shifting focus towards electrification." says Next Green Car: "Kia has not yet provided any technical data on the EV6 with the revealing of the name and the sketch of the design. However, the Ioniq 5 should provide some good clues here, since it is based on the same platform. This basis will give Kia the scope for batteries with 58 or 73 kWh, powertrains between 125 and 225 kW. The technical details of the electric Kia might differ slightly, but the Kia EV6 should also have the fast-charging capability of up to 220 kW and the impressive charging curve of the Ioniq 5."   https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9106/kia-unveils-the-ev6-its-first-dedicated-ev/   DACIA SPRING EV NOW AVAILABLE TO ORDER, PRICED FROM €12,403 Dacia is opening a new chapter in its history with the launch of all-new Spring, the brand’s first 100% electric car. In addition to requests from North America, Europeans also expressed a strong desire to become beta testers. Musk wrote that Tesla will ask regulators in order to make possible the proliferation of FSD Beta in Europe." reports Tesmanian: "Also, in response to a request from a Tesla owner from Europe, Musk replied that the company would ask the regional regulators to authorize the use of FSD Beta there. If this approval is granted, it will become an additional stage in the development of FSD. The fact is that the layouts of cities in the United States and Europe are significantly different. Europe is characterized by compact cities with many narrow streets saturated with dense traffic."   https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-will-request-regulators-to-release-fsd-beta-in-europe-says-elon-musk   TESLA’S COST PER KWH FOR CELLS FROM SUPPLIERS REVEALED "Tesla sources many of its battery cells from third-party suppliers, like Panasonic, LG Chem, and CATL. Because of the massive rate at which Tesla buys these cells, it is paying significantly less per kilowatt-hour compared to its competitors, according to a new report from Cairn Energy Research Advisors" says Teslarati: "According to Cairn’s research, Tesla pays an average of $142 per kWh for cells purchased from its three previously mentioned suppliers. Meanwhile, companies like GM are paying $169 per kWh, while the industry average runs around $186, according to the firm’s report. Furthermore, Tesla’s packs cost $187 per kWh on average, with GM’s costing $207 per kWh and the industry average being $246 per kWh."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-battery-cells-cost-per-kwh-revealed-gm-competitors-cairn-report/   BP PULSE INVESTS £2 MILLION TO UPGRADE LEGACY CHARGE POINTS "In the UK, bp pulse is pledging to improve the reliability of the UK’s older public charging infrastructure by working with local authorities to upgrade and replace charge points across the country." reports Electrive: "The BP subsidiary – that was given the new name bp pulse incorporating bp Chargemaster and Polar in 2020 – has already agreed to invest over £400,000 in infrastructure for replacing more than 50 charge points. These are mostly owned by local authorities and originally installed over a decade ago with government grant funding under the Plugged in Places scheme. Beyond the upgrading of initial 50 charge points, discussions are already underway to make an additional £750,000 available for legacy charge point owners, which could see over 300 units upgraded. In total, bp pulse has made £2 million available for the endeavour."   https://www.electrive.com/2021/03/09/bp-pulse-invests-2-million-to-upgrade-legacy-charge-points/   RIVIAN CEO SHARES HOW ROOMY THE BACK OF THE R1S WILL BE "Rivian’s CEO RJ Scaringe Tweeted a video of himself surrounded by R1S electric SUVs. In the video, he explains how the second and third-row seats fold down and shares perspective of how much room future drivers will actually have." says Electrek: "In a recent Tweet, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe offers fans of the automaker a glimpse at a posse of R1S SUVs. The video features eight different R1S’ lined up in various colors. Scaringe speaks about how he has been driving the R1S the past couple weeks and has been loving it. He talks about loading up his kids and gear, and even posted along with the video, “Ready for camping!” This certainly fits the theme of outdoor, all-terrain situations the high-performance EV is geared specifically toward. Scaringe admits many people have been curious about how the second and third rows fold flat in the R1S, so he decided to share a demonstration. With the tailgate down, the seats lay seamlessly flat from the second-row headrests, out the EV’s rear."   https://electrek.co/2021/03/10/rivian-ceo-shares-how-roomy-the-back-of-the-r1s-will-be/   HYUNDAI ANNOUNCES NEW KONA ELECTRIC PRICES ""The refreshed Hyundai Kona Electric is now on sale, with prices inclusive of the £3,000 government plug-in car grant starting from £30,125. The all-electric SUV has been given a visual refresh, with more technology introduced across the range too" says CarWow: "Opt for a range-topping Ultimate spec, and that rises to £40,375. All cars get a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and equally-sized infotainment system as standard, along with rear parking sensors and a reversing camera. Adaptive cruise control and keyless entr.y. Upgrade to the 64kWh and that’s paired to a 150kw, 204hp motor. That boosts range up to 300 miles as well. EV charging is the big topic of the moment as the government pushes for more infrastructure ahead of its 2030 EV deadline. Sarah Sloman chats with Tom Callow of the electric vehicle charging network BP Pulse. Founded in 2008, as Chargemaster – initially converting petrol cars to electric – it's grown massively, and in 2018 was bought by BP. Tom talks about ‘mobility hubs' – generally known as forecourts, these days – and the new ‘black gold': It's no longer oil, but coffee. He explains how the mobility hub network will change and grow, what the best locations are and why rural areas will not be overlooked. Already, BP Pulse is in mid-Wales, for example. There will be ‘multiple formats' in terms of charging, he says, new hubs that are not filling stations and he predicts a ‘huge roll-out' of BP Pulse's plans' over next five years - ahead of 2030 EV deadline. “We're going across the country – not just targeting cities – and it's not just about putting in new, but also upgrading older ‘legacy' infrastructure,” he tells Sara. As their chat closes, he explains what the newly-announced partnership with JumpTech's platform will deliver, and the wider charging options.

More than 148,000 have been sold in the United States.. the LEAF, which first went on sale in Japan and U.S. in December 2010. Back then the EPA range was 73 miles from a 24kWh pack. Until the first quarter of 2020 it was the worlds biggest selling EV, and around February/March the Tesla Model 3 took that crown. LEAF = Leading, Environmentally-friendly, Affordable Family car. In July this year, Nissan unveiled the Nissan Ariya all-electric crossover. Nissan plans to sell 1 million electrified vehicles annually by 2023, including EVs and vehicles with e-POWER electrified powertrains.   Japan considers banning sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles in mid-2030s "Japan may ban sales of new gasoline-engine cars by the mid-2030s in favor of hybrid or electric vehicles, public broadcaster NHK reported on Thursday, aligning it with other countries and regions that are imposing curbs on fossil fuel vehicles." says Autoblog: "Japan's industry ministry is considering requiring all new vehicles to be electric or hybrid, NHK reported earlier, adding the ministry would finalize a formal target following expert-panel debates as early as the year-end."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/12/03/japan-considers-ban-on-internal-combustion-cars/   BP BRINGS CHARGEMASTER AND POLAR TOGETHER "BP has launched BP Pulse, the new name for both BP Chargemaster and the Polar network. As part of this rebrand, the websites for the two have been merged into a single BP Pulse website, as has the mobile apps." says Current NEws: "Its subscription scheme will continue to operate, enabling access to BP Pulse public chargepoints for £7.85 per month, and throughout November, all 50kW Ultracharge units were upgraded with a contactless payment terminal and improved software. BP acquired the EV charging company in 2018 in a £130 million deal."   https://www.current-news.co.uk/news/bp-brings-chargemaster-and-polar-together-under-new-bp-pulse-umbrella   VOLVO CEO SAYS BANNING ICE CARS IS MORE EFFECTIVE THAN CREDITS FOR EVS "ICE car banning is way more effective than giving people money to buy electric cars. This is what Håkan Samuelsson at the “FT Live: Future of the Car Digital Conference.” For Volvo’s CEO, if electric cars are the future of personal transportation, putting a deadline for combustion-engined vehicle sales helps companies plan for EVs accordingly – and promote EV adoption." reports InsideEVs: "Samuelsson said incentives do not help in building sustainable and profitable businesses. When carbon credits and subsidies end, what is left is what will keep these enterprises going."   https://insideevs.com/news/458358/volvo-ceo-banning-ice-more-effective-subsidies/   VW ID.3 THE BEST-SELLING CAR IN NORWAY IN NOVEMBER "In Norway, 7,035 new electric cars were registered in November. Electric vehicles accounted for 56.1 per cent of new passenger car registrations. With 986 units, the VW ID.3 was the most popular model across all drive types." says Chris at electrive: " With 63,071 electric cars since the beginning of the year, the Norwegian electric car market is higher than in the same period last year (56,196). most new registrations were for Volkswagen ID.3, whose deliveries only started in September. This means that 5,451 ID.3 have been delivered in Norway since September, bringing the model to second place in overall statistics in just three months."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/12/03/norway-counts-7035-new-bevs-in-november/   TESLA MODEL 3’S WITH LFP BATTERIES NO LONGER HAVE DAILY/TRIP BATTERY CHARGE RECOMMENDATIONS IN THE APP "A few months ago Tesla Customer Support in China revealed customers with the new LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries could charge their batteries to 100% without adversely impacting the health of the battery pack. Now the first customers in Europe are taking delivery of the first batch of imported Model 3’s from Giga Shanghai with the new batteries, and Tesla has made a change to the mobile app." according to Drive Tesla Canada: "Previously the charging screen in the app would have recommended charge levels for both daily use, with a bracketed range of between 50% and 80%. For 90% to 100% charges, the app classified that range as being only for a ‘trip’. With the new LFP batteries, the only recommended charge limits are between 50% and 100%."   https://driveteslacanada.ca/model-3/new-tesla-model-3s-with-lfp-batteries-no-longer-have-daily-trip-battery-charge-recommendations-in-the-app/   MATE RIMAC SAYS SPAC FUNDING COULD DAMAGE INDUSTRY "A surge in the use of special purpose acquisition companies (SPAC) for raising money for electric vehicle startups could harm the long-term prospects of the industry, Mate Rimac, founder of electric hypercar maker Rimac, said on Thursday." repotrs Autoblog: "Managers of SPAC companies are not held to the same level of liability about potential growth prospects as managers who raise cash via an initial public offering (IPO) on equity markets, spurring concerns about an investor bubble. SPACs, also known as "blank-check companies," are small companies with an established track record of filings at the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) which are then used to buy up promising companies in high-growth sectors.  Companies including Faraday Future, Canoo, Nikola, Fisker and Lordstown Motors have used the tactic to obtain funding."   With the ever closer relationship between Rimac and VW Group we could see them buying Bugatti, or being given a large stake in return for VW access to Rimac technology.   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/12/03/mate-rimac-electric-car-startups-spac-funding/   ELON MUSK PLANS TO MOVE CLOSE TO GIGAAUSTIN "Several of his close friends and associates say that Musk has told them he’s planning to move to the Lone Star State." says CNBC: "He spends most of his time between Austin, where Tesla and his tunnel start-up Boring Company have operations, and a coastal village called Boca Chica, home to a SpaceX facility. Getting out of California, with the highest income tax in the country, and into Texas, which has no state income tax, could save Musk billions of dollars based on his compensation package awarded in 2018. The state’s top lawmaker, Gov. Abbott, certainly seems to think Musk is making the move. In July, Abbott said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that Musk told him he’d gotten a Texas driver’s license and is a “bona fide Texan now.”   https://www.cnbc.com/2020/12/02/tesla-ceo-elon-musk-plans-to-move-to-texas-friends-and-associates-say.html   OPEL ‘SURPRISED’ AS MOKKA-E SELLS OUT BEFORE LAUNCH "Another EV sold out before it launched. This time, it’s the upcoming Opel Mokka-e that is sold out in Europe, even though the car won’t hit the road until next March. Opel says they were “totally surprised” by the demand and were expecting a “high-four-digit” number of sales next year." says electrek: "Not only did Opel sell out the initial “Edition” model, but even the base model’s next year production has already been sold out. Attractive pricing, particularly due to strong government incentives which reduce the price of the car by nearly a third, were responsible for high sales in Germany – but out-of-Germany sales were also much stronger than expected."   https://electrek.co/2020/12/03/opel-mokka-e-sells-out/   NEW-GENERATION APP FOR BMW CUSTOMERS A new-generation app is now available to customers in 30 European markets, China and Korea: the My BMW App features a new-look design, intuitive and simplified user experience, and new services to support individual electromobility. It displays information on the status of the vehicle and, depending on the equipment, allows functions to be activated remotely (e.g. to locate the vehicle, lock and unlock the doors, or monitor the vehicle surroundings (Remote 3D View)) Customers are informed of available Remote Software Upgrades via the My BMW App and can easily download these upgrades at home before transferring them to and installing them in the vehicle. The BMW Digital Key, which turns an iPhone into a vehicle key, offers convenient set-up via the My BMW App in just a few steps. Amazon Alexa can be used in vehicles with BMW Operating System 7. Once the customer has linked their Amazon account in the app, they can use the voice assistant in the vehicle by saying the activation word “Alexa” or at the touch of a button The app offers additional features for electrified BMW vehicles, including an improved overview of the electric range, charging status and charging history. Customers can use the charge and climate timer to optimise the charging process by defining specific time slots for charging and set departure times. Pre-conditioning is also available (to heat the vehicle in winter or cool it in summer, for example) for enhanced comfort.   https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/global/article/detail/T0321612EN/your-world-my-bmw-the-new-generation-app-for-bmw-customers-now-available-in-30-european-markets-china-and-korea   TOYOTA PRICES MIRAI FUEL CELL SEDAN TO WIN EV BUYERS "Toyota aims to increase acceptance of fuel cell cars by pricing its latest Mirai hydrogen-powered sedan below that of a long-range full-electric car." says Automotive NEws Europe: "The second-generation Mirai will cost from 64,000 euros ($77,800) when it goes on sale in Europe next year, below the 82,900 euros Tesla charges in Germany for its similar-sized Model S Long Range Plus with 100 kilowatt-hour battery. Toyota is targeting a 10-fold increase in global sales of the Mirai. What’s it all about? Tom is one of those, like me, that tried to bring business acumen to a very nascent, and very hippy, clean and renewable energy sector in the UK in the late 2000’s. His journey, passion and drivers are fascinating to share, as is the story of Kaluza, a company really creating the Internet of Energy (IoE), across a range of domestic devices, proving new incomes and opportunities for businesses and consumers. Take a listen. About our guest Tom Pakenham is Director of Electric Vehicles at Kaluza, OVO Group’s intelligent energy platform. Driving the transition to a distributed, zero-carbon energy system, the Kaluza platform is able to securely connect millions of smart devices and create mass flexibility, helping offset costly and carbon-intensive peaks. Tom plays a crucial role in scaling this unique technology across the fast-growing electric vehicle market. Before Kaluza, Tom helped lead OVO Energy’s transition from a pure kWh retail business into a diversified energy services company. In 2017 he spearheaded the launch of OVO’s ‘EV Everywhere’ energy bundle and developed industry-leading smart charging propositions for customers. Tom also developed strategic partnerships with key players including Chargemaster, the UK’s biggest provider of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, Indra Renewable Technologies, and ChargedEV. Prior to OVO, Tom founded greentomatocars in 2006 - the world’s first low emission taxi company, which he sold to global transport conglomerate Transdev. After selling greentomatocars, Tom launched greentomatoenergy - an energy efficiency and micro-renewables business - which was acquired by a private equity firm in 2013. After this, Tom led the Business Development and Innovation team at Transdev Plc.  Tom graduated from Cambridge University with a History MA and has a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from BPP Law School. He is a qualified solicitor. About Kaluza Our mission is to securely connect all devices to an intelligent zero carbon grid Kaluza is an intelligent energy platform able to connect and control millions of smart devices across people’s homes, such as electric vehicles, heaters and batteries. The machine learning platform introduces new flexibility into the energy system by optimising individual devices to use energy during off-peak hours, when costs and carbon are lower. An OVO Group company, Kaluza operates end-to-end, providing software, hardware and in-home installation services to a range of partners and is driving the global transition to a distributed and secure, zero-carbon grid.  GUEST LINKS Kaluza on twitter: https://twitter.com/Kaluza_tech Kaluza on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/kaluza/ Tom Pakenham on Twitter: https://twitter.com/tom_pakenham Tom Pakenham on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tom-pakenham-7424b3/ Kaluza home page: https://www.kaluza.com/ EPISODE LINKS Small is Beautiful – EF Schumacher - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Small-Beautiful-Economics-People-Mattered/dp/0099225611 The Story of Stuff – Animations - https://storyofstuff.org/ Follow us online, write a review (please) or subscribe I'm very keen to hear feedback on the podcast and my guests, and to hear your suggestions for future guests or topics. Show #467   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 10th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   ALREADY MORE THAN 10,000 REGISTRATIONS FOR THE ID.3 "At a press event held yesterday in Berlin, Volkswagen launched pre-booking in Europe for the first model in its new full-electric ID. model family, the ID.3. Customers’ interest in the special edition, the ID.3 1ST, which is limited to 30,000 vehicles, is significantly exceeding the brand’s expectations. Sometimes, the IT systems are unable to handle the large number of users accessing the system at the same time. This leads to long waiting times and interruptions in the registration process in some markets. Volkswagen is working hard to eliminate the hitches. Nevertheless, more than 10,000 registrations were received throughout Europe during the first 24 hours."   VW ZWICKAU PLANT ON SCHEDULE AS ID.3 ROLLS OUT "The transformation of the VW Zwickau site into a purely electric car plant is fully on schedule. According to VW, more than 200 ID.3 pre-series vehicles have already been successfully produced." reports electrive.com: "Volkswagen claims that this is the world’s first electric transformation of a large conventional car factory. In the future, the Zwickau plant will only make e-vehicles based on the Modular Electric Drive Toolkit (MEB) and have a production capacity of 330,000 vehicles a year."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/05/10/vw-zwickau-plant-on-schedule-as-id-3-rolls-out/   DYSON PATENTS AND MEMO OFFER A CRYPTIC TEASE OF ITS FIRST EV "Sir James Dyson has revealed some early details about the company's electric car in a memo sent to employees and seen by Bloomberg and The Telegraph. A set of patents that recently became public also includes diagrams that make it seem like the vehicle will look like a Range Rover. " according to Engadget today: "While we might have to wait a bit before seeing a prototype, the company has reportedly sunk billions into the project, which already has 500 personnel. It's designed in house, after all, and will be manufactured -- in a facility in Singapore -- and sold by Dyson itself. Details unfortunately remain scant despite the sketches, but the billionaire's memo said testing will ramp up in June and that the EV is on track for launch in 2021."   BP CHARGEMASTER PLANS 100 NEW 150 KW CHARGERS IN UK THIS YEAR "British charging company BP Chargemaster (BP acquired the Chargemaster in 2018) announced a plan to install 400 ultra-fast charging stations in the UK by 2021. The first batch of 100 150 kW chargers will be installed by the end of 2019, at 50 locations (most likely at BP fuel stations) starting from July." writes Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com. Whereas Autocar says: "The rollout will help future-proof the UK’s charging network, as currently very few EVs are capable of charging at 150kW. Audi’s e-tron is one that is, and its 95kWh battery can be charged to 80% in around 30 minutes. Companies such as Pod Point, Fastned and Ionity all claim to be rolling out chargers capable of supplying power at 150kW and above, but there’s currently only a handful that are operational in the UK. BP Chargemaster’s announcement is the biggest commitment so far as a result. "   https://insideevs.com/news/348682/bp-chargemaster-100-new-chargers-uk/   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/bp-chargemaster-install-100-ultra-fast-ev-chargers-year   SEAT ROLLS OUT ITS ELECTRIC OFFENSIVE IN BARCELONA SEAT celebrates its 69 years of history and is participating this year in the 100th edition of the Automobile Barcelona, where it has rolled out its vision of electric mobility with its two new concept cars – the first ever fully electric SEAT el-Born and the SEAT Minimo, a forward-looking approach that aims to become the companion of cities and revolutionis urban mobility. Moreover, CUPRA is also displaying the new CUPRA Formentor, the brand’s own first model, as well as the e-Racer, the first ever fully electric touring racecar. The el-Born concept car is the first SEAT that has been conceived as an electric vehicle and it is scheduled for market launch in 2020. SEAT will be the Volkswagen Group’s second brand to make a model on the MEB platform, whose assembly line is set to turn out a new generation of vehicles based on the market’s most advanced electric and connectivity technology. With a practical range of between 300 and 420 km thanks to its 58 kWh battery, this vehicle is ready to travel beyond urban limits.   BMW'S ELECTRIC SUV SPIED UP CLOSE WITH INTERIOR SHOWING "BMW's next electric vehicle, which will likely be named either the i5 or, appropriately enough, the iNEXT, was spied during testing. These photos don't reveal a lot about the exterior styling of the upcoming electrified crossover, but we do have our first look at the interior of the new BMW. At this point, we have absolutely no details about the powertrain in this new vehicle. All we have are these excellent close-up photos from our spy photographer." according to Cam for Motor1.com: "while we've gotten used to referring to this project as either the i5 or the iNEXT, the steering wheel appears to say "iNEXT" on it if you look closely. It's a small, blue, rhombus-shaped badge placed below the poorly-disguised BMW emblem."   https://www.motor1.com/news/349028/bmw-inext-interior-spy-shots/amp/   ENVISION AESC'S NCM 811 BATTERIES TO EXCEED 300 WH/KG IN 2020 "Envision AESC, formerly AESC (Automotive Energy Supply Corporation) acquired by Envision Group from Nissan (which still holds some 20% of shares), announced new 5th generation NCM 811 batteries." says InsideEVs: "Over nine years, AESC supplied more than 430,000 battery packs for electric cars (more than 90% to Nissan), having three manufacturing plants around the world with a total capacity of 7.5 GWh annually. In the longer term, the company hopes to decrease the battery cost to $50/kWh in 2025"   OPEL CORSA FULLY ELECTRIC VERSION READY TO ROLL "The new generation of the Opel Corsa will celebrate its world premiere on 4 June and can be ordered as a fully electric version from then on. In an interview, Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller promised an “attractive price” for the E-Corsa but did not specify any details." says Carrie at electrive: "At the end of last year, Opel announced its intention to open the order books for the new electric Corsa and the Grandland X as plug-in hybrids in the first half of 2019. The Corsa is likely to have the same technical data as the DS 3 Crossback. Lohscheller promised a competitive price for the market launch, which could be as early as December: “With the new Corsa, we are making e-mobility affordable for a wide range of customers. This will be a real “Volks” electric car.”   https://www.electrive.com/2019/05/10/opel-corsa-fully-electric-version-ready-to-roll/   FERRARI HYBRID SUPERCAR CONFIRMED EVO reports on Ferrari adding batteries to their next car: "Ferrari has confirmed it will reveal a new V6 hybrid supercar in a matter of just weeks, after CEO Louis Camilleri made mention of the new model’s imminent arrival during the firm’s Q1 investors’ financial call. The new supercar will be the first series-production hybrid from Ferrari, after the strictly limited LaFerrari, and will combine its new electrified components with a new V6 power unit."   https://www.evo.co.uk/ferrari/22636/ferrari-hybrid-supercar-confirmed-mclaren-has-been-put-on-notice   TESPLAYER BRINGS SPOTIFY ACCESS TO TESLA MODEL S, 3, X OWNERS "Tesla owners finally have a way to play Spotify in their Model S, Model X and Model 3 thanks to third-party, browser-based app ‘TesPlayer‘ that can manage playlists and play music directly from the vehicle’s center touchscreen." according to Simon at Teslarati "Tesla uses Spotify as its provider of choice in Europe, though vehicles in the United States are equipped with Slacker Radio instead. While Slacker is impressive on its own right, it falls short when compared to Spotify and its insanely vast plethora of content."   https://www.teslarati.com/how-to-play-spotify-tesla-music-streaming/   TESLA MODEL 3 TRACKER: CUMULATIVE PRODUCTION EXCEEDS 250,000 InsideEVs has been looking at the Bloomberg Tracker and Model 3 just hit a big number: "Today, Bloomberg’s Tesla Model 3 Tracker shows for the very first time that a quarter million Tesla Model 3 have been produced cumulatively. The counter stands at 250,276 Model 3 produced, out of which about 218,612 was confirmed by Tesla at the end of March 2019. Show #452   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 23rd April 2019. TESLA UNVEILS NEW CHIP, NEW COMPUTER So many outlets are talking about the Tesla Autonomy Day yesterday it's hard to know which comments to bring you, so lets start full nerd, as the presentation started with more gigahertz and teraflops than I ever wanted to know about. "Tesla has unveiled a new chip and computer for its cars custom designed by a team led by Apple veteran Pete Bannon. The hardware started full production in July 2018 and is already being retrofitted to employee vehicles, CEO Elon Musk said at the company’s first “Autonomy Day” – intended to showcase autonomous driving progress. Tesla has dropped NVIDIA’s products as a result." is the verdict of Computer Business Review: "The Tesla chip, built for the company by Samsung, is capable of 76 trillion operations per second (TOPS). It draws just 100 watts and includes what Bannon described as a “modest” GPU, with the aim being that as the neural net improves performance, the amount of post-processing the GPU does will shrink. The computer includes 12 A72 64-bit CPUs for general purpose processing that operate at 2.2. gigahertz."   Pete Bannon said: "“In 2016 there was no ground-up neural network accelerator; everyone was adding instructions to their CPU or GPU or DSP to make it better for inference. I was hired in Feb 2016. I asked Elon if he was willing to spend all the money it takes to do full custom system design.” He said ‘are we gonna win?’ and I said ‘of course’ so we got a bunch of people and got to work.”.   https://www.cbronline.com/news/tesla-chip-nvidia   Fred at Electrek points out the hardware is already on the road: "Today, the company clarified that it was in all new Model S and Model X since March (start around March 20th) and in all new Model 3 vehicles earlier this month (starting around April 12th). Musk said that Tesla will start offering retrofits to current Tesla owners who bought the ‘Full Self-Driving package’ in the next few months."   https://electrek.co/2019/04/22/tesla-full-self-driving-computer-details/   TESLA OUTLINES PLAN FOR ‘ROBOTAXI’ RIDE-SHARING SERVICE "Tesla owners who wish to use their vehicles for the Tesla Network will be able to manage their electric cars through their smartphone. Musk dropped several points of information that will be key to the Tesla Network’s Robotaxi service as well. " says Simon at Teslarati: "Among these is the vehicles’ longevity. The CEO noted that current-generation battery packs are good for about 300,000 to 500,000 miles, though Tesla’s upcoming batteries which will go on production next year will operate for twice as long, up to 1 million miles with minimal maintenance. Operating the Tesla Network will make the electric car maker a player in the highly-competitive ride-sharing market, which is dominated by giants such as Uber and Lyft. Thanks to their low operating costs as all-electric cars, Tesla’s electric cars hold an advantage. Tesla estimates that running a Robotaxi will cost around $0.18 or less per mile. This undercuts the $2-$3 cost per mile of ride-sharing."   In a separate Electrek article Fred said: "On the app, Tesla owners will be able to add their cars to the shared fleet to earn money or summon an autonomous Tesla vehicle to pick them up and bring them to a destination. Musk dove deep into the economics of such a fleet — both from Tesla’s perspective and from the perspective of a Tesla owner. As we previously reported, now all new Tesla vehicles are equipped with what Musk believes is all the hardware necessary to achieve full self-driving through future software updates. He estimates that Tesla will have over a million of those vehicles on the road by the end of next year — around the time they start activating full self-driving capability"   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-autonomy-day-livestream-updates/   https://electrek.co/2019/04/22/tesla-robotaxi-network-self-driving-fleet-ride-sharing-cars/   One of the Electrek forum members MrXtraconservative said "People called Musk crazy when he said his rockets would fall from space, then safely land backwards. Impossible! Today is more of the same."   STUFF ELON MUSK SAID ABOUT TESLA AUTONOMOUS CARS ON MONDAY, RANKED Gizmodo ranks how outrageous some of the statements were, with more Elons awarded for anything out there. The new Tesla micro-chip is “the best chip in the world... objectively” (Gizmodo say: according to Bloomberg, even Nvidia—which Musk said Tesla had already transitioned away from as a chip supplier to begin installing the in-house chip—admitted that Tesla had “raised the bar for self-driving computers.”. One out of five Elons) Tesla will have level 5 autonomy in 2020 which means they will self-drive so well “no one needs to pay attention" (Gizmodo say: “Claiming that the Tesla cars have the hardware for full autonomy and only need the software is like saying that we have seeds, we just need to plow, plant, nurture, harvest and then eat,” Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute engineer Raj Rajkumar told the Verge. “Basically they are at the starting point—full autonomy is many years away.” Three out of Five Elons) “Probably two years from now we’ll make a car with no steering wheels or pedals.” (Five out of five Elons.)   https://gizmodo.com/stuff-elon-musk-said-about-tesla-autonomous-cars-on-mon-1834233680   GOOGLE MAPS HELPS YOU FIND OPEN EV CHARGING STATIONS IN REAL TIME "From now on, you just have to fire up Google Maps if you need to hunt for an open EV charging station." reports Engadget UK today: "The latest versions of Google Maps for Android, iOS and the web now show real-time availability for charging ports in the US and UK, giving you a better idea of when to go for a top-up -- you're no longer relegated to static info like before. The feature won't help you find a Tesla Supercharger (you don't really need that given Tesla's app), but it will cover the networks of Chargemaster, EVgo and SemaConnect, with Chargepoint coming soon."   https://www.engadget.com/2019/04/23/google-maps-real-time-ev-charging-station-info/   EVGO AND MAVEN GIG INTRODUCE FIRST IN THE NATION PUBLIC-RIDESHARE FAST EV CHARGING HUBS At a special ribbon cutting event today, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti joined LA-based EVgo, the nation’s largest public fast EV charging network, and Maven, General Motors’ car sharing platform, to celebrate the introduction of a new, innovative network of EV fast charging hubs that feature both public and dedicated fast chargers for Maven Gig’s shared-use vehicles. Los Angeles is home to EVgo’s first local network of these public-rideshare fast EV charging hubs, which will include three locations across the city, further demonstrating the city’s role as a leader in transportation electrification. Today’s event celebrated the official opening of the Venice Crossroads fast EV charging hub located at 8985 Venice Blvd in Los Angeles. Venice Crossroads is located six miles away from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and adjacent to the 10 Freeway and the Metro Expo Line. The first hub in the network opened last month in the heart of Hollywood at the Hollywest Promenade Cathy Zoi, CEO of EVgo: "Our new network of public-rideshare fast charging hubs in Los Angeles is the first of its kind and will make charging quick and easy for Maven Gig members, while helping to improve access for all EV drivers across the city. The accident happened late at night on Sunday, February 10, in New Jersey." according to Digital Trends: "The owner’s identity hasn’t been released yet, but the New Jersey law enforcement officials who arrived at the scene of the accident say he wasn’t hurt or charged. The Model X sustained significant damage, however. When questioned about what happened, the driver replied he was traveling with Autopilot — Tesla’s suite of semi-autonomous driving aids — turned on when the car “got confused due to the lane markings,” according to police officers who spoke to news website NJ.com. The document added the driver told officers he tried to regain control of the vehicle but couldn’t override Autopilot. I have an emailed statement from Tesla: "“Safety is the top priority at Tesla, and we engineer and build our cars with this in mind. We also ask our customers to exercise safe behavior when using our vehicles, including following the car’s instructions for remaining alert and present when using Autopilot, and to be prepared to take control at all times. Since we launched Autopilot in 2015, we are not aware of a single instance in which Autopilot refused to disengage.”   https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/tesla-model-x-veers-off-the-road-in-nj-driver-blames-autopilot/   PORSCHE TAYCAN ELECTRIC CAR SPIED CHARGING IN WINTRY SCANDINAVIA "Spotted in the frosty, winter climate of northern Scandinavia. This Porsche Taycan EV is charging up to test its ability to add miles in the cold." reports Steven Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "Recent news indicates that the Taycan may be delayed a bit as the automaker attempts to remove costs from the car. Regardless of all that, Porsche continues to test its Taycan out in public. This latest series of shots focus quite a bit on charging and the car’s charging port." Automedia notes: "Complete with tailpipes to hide its true EV intentions, our spies caught the all-electric machine undergoing charging at a public station in northern Scandinavia. The Taycan will be purposed as a Tesla Model S rival, complete with a battery pack that will reportedly hold more than 530 kilometers. Porsche claims that they are a front-runner in introducing the 800V system,. However, it will require a special 800V charge port to achieve those remarkable recharging times." Simon at Teslarati says: "In a recent sighting, an Italian publication was allowed to take photos of the Taycan’s automated charge port door in action, as well as the vehicle’s front trunk, or as the electric car community dubs it, the “frunk.” Unlike other sightings of the vehicle, Porsche engineers who were with the electric car were reportedly kind enough to allow the news publication to take photos and short video clips of the Taycan test mule. Taking full advantage of the opportunity, DMove.it decided to take pictures of the prototype’s automated charge port door, its bodywork, and its frunk."   https://insideevs.com/porsche-taycan-electric-car-spied-charging-winter/   https://www.teslarati.com/porsche-taycan-automated-charge-port-door-frunk-pictures/   RENAULT PROMOTES ELECTRIC VANS AT MILTON KEYNES EV EXPERIENCE CENTRE Hi to Lewis at EV Experience Centre. He sent me some pictures of the new vehicles on display. AM Online reports: "Renault is showcasing its range of electric commercial vehicles at Milton Keynes' EV Experience Centre for the next week (February 11-17). The Kangoo ZE 33 and Twizy Cargo will be displayed in the showroom, which is operated by charge point specilaist, Chargemaster, and located in the town’s MK One shopping centre. Product experts from Renault Pro+ will be in store to give advice and guidance to prospective customers. Within the shopping centre at Milton Keynes, Renault Pro+ will also have a New Master ZE on display, alongside a Twizy photobooth. There will be test drives available for the entire Renault electric range, including the Renault Zoe. The move aims to build awareness of the Renault Pro+ electric van range, which is more relevant than ever as cities endeavor to improve air quality and reduce emissions from the vehicles within them."   https://www.am-online.com/news/car-manufacturer-news/2019/02/12/renault-promotes-electric-vans-at-milton-keynes-ev-experience-centre   FIRST IONITY 350 KW CHARGERS READY FOR USE IN DENMARK "According to elbil.no, one of the latest IONITY fast-charging stations in Nyborg, Denmark is the first to be enabled to support 350 kW power." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "Previously, the chargers installed by IONITY were limited to about 150 kW, but now it seems that the first liquid-cooled cables were used at full power. This is quite a notable achievement and a big improvement over even 150 kW. Yet, no car on the market can accept such power levels just yet. Step by step other stations also will be upgraded to 350 kW to be ready for the first models with ≈800 V battery packs, like the upcoming Porsche Taycan."   EVGO POWERED MORE THAN 75 MILLION ELECTRIC MILES IN 2018 EVgo, the nation’s largest public fast-charging network, announced that in 2018 electric vehicle drivers used its public fast charging network to drive more than 75 million miles, representing 88 percent growth from 2017. With more than 1,100 public fast chargers in 34 states and 66 metropolitan markets across the country, EVgo now serves more than 125,000 customers in 34 U.S. states who drive a full range of today’s fast charge-capable electric vehicles. With more public fast chargers operational in the U.S. than any other company -and more than one hundred fast chargers under construction- EVgo is responding to the rapid growth of EV adoption, new model introductions, and accelerated electric rideshare.   SKODA VISION IV CONCEPT SKETCHES PREVIEW INCOMING ELECTRIC SUV COUPE "Skoda will show an electric SUV concept at the Geneva motor show next month, called the Vision iV. We know that Skoda is planning to produce an electric SUV based on the VW Group’s new MEB platform, and it’s this concept that will preview that incoming production model, which will go on to headline Skoda’s push to offer ten electric or hybrid models by 2022." reports EVO: "While Skoda has remained coy as to the production date of this coupe body shape, a more traditionally shaped SUV model will arrive first, kicking off a whole suite of all-electric MEB models built by Skoda, and its stablemates within the Volkswagen Group."   https://www.evo.co.uk/skoda/22267/skoda-vision-iv-concept-sketches-preview-incoming-electric-suv-coupe   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. In this episode, hosts Jennifer McCormick, Brady Bizarro and Erin Hussey discuss issues with inaction. The first issue is with balance billing, and a recent case involving a patient who was balance billed and refused to pay the bill. The hospital now seeks declaratory judgement stating that the patient-hospital contract is valid. This case is a good example of the interaction of third party agreements and the SPD, and the ongoing issue of the reasonableness of Chargemaster rates. The second issue is with wellness incentive rules and the lack of guidance from the EEOC, following the AARP v. EEOC case. This EEOC was ordered to re-write wellness program rules regarding incentives and issue proposed rules on August 31, 2018, with an effective date of January 1, 2019. If the EEOC does not re-write the rules, the old rules (the 30% incentive maximum) will be vacated and there will be no new rules for employers to follow.

Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 4th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   Before we start The Fourth Of July. In the USA I hope you’re enjoying some well-deserved time off, an Independence Day holiday with family, friends and fireworks. Can I just say on behalf of everyone over here 242 years ago, sorry about all that, we had a habit of taking things. And by things I mean countries.   TESLA IS OFFICIALLY BRINGING MODEL 3 IN EUROPE FOR FIRST TIME AT THE GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED Fred at Electrek has AWESOME news for my UK listeners: "Tesla Model 3 has shown up in Europe in several unofficial events, but Tesla is now officially bringing the new electric car on the old continent for the first time this month." Early M3 are also being invited too join them. I'll see you there!   https://electrek.co/2018/07/03/tesla-model-3-official-europe-goodwood-festival-of-speed/     A SHOUTING ELON MUSK AND CHANGING RULES: INSIDE TELSA'S MODEL 3 SPRINT The reaction to Tesla's 5k model 3 achievement are coming in and CNBC goes for full drama: "A tense and short-tempered Chief Executive Elon Musk barked at engineers on the Fremont, California assembly line. Tesla pulled workers from other departments to keep pumping out the Model 3 electric sedans, disrupting production of the Model S and X lines. And weekend shifts were mandatory." They have a little more insight into those last few hours: "Leading up to Sunday morning's production milestone, Musk paced the Model 3 line, snapping at his engineers when the around-the-clock production slowed or stopped due to problems with robots, one worker said. Tesla built a new line in just two weeks in a huge tent outside the main factory, an unprecedented move in an industry that takes years to plan out its assembly lines, and said the tented production area accounted for 20 percent of the Model 3s produced last week." Tesla have made just shy of 50,000 Model S and X's in the first 6 months of a year they planned to produce 100,000. So all things being equal, no more no less, they'll do that too. "In the morning of Sunday, July 1, about five hours after the self-imposed second-quarter deadline had passed, the number 5,000 flashed on a countdown screen viewed by Tesla's Model 3 assembly-line workers. The Model 3 itself bore a "5,000" sign in its front window."   https://www.cnbc.com/2018/07/03/shouting-elon-musk-changing-rules-inside-teslas-model-3-building-spr.html   HYUNDAI CONFIRMS HYBRID AND PHEV FOR NEW SANTA FE The Hyundai Santa Fe looks like it's electrifying for the next model. "Likely to arrive in 2020, the company confirmed their flagship SUV will receive a full array of hybrid powertrains, ranging from 48V mild hybrid, to hybrid and plug-in hybrid." says Jonathan Musk for fleetworld.co.uk: "Although there is little detail to go on for the hybrid and plug-in hybrid Santa Fe models, the mild hybrid variant will be the first to market, joining a powerful 48V system to a 2.0-litre diesel that can add torque to the engine thus improving efficiency."   https://fleetworld.co.uk/hyundai-confirms-hybrid-and-phev-for-new-santa-fe/   NISSAN'S E-POWER TECHNOLOGY IS ANNIHILATING THE TOYOTA PRIUS IN JAPAN There's a hybrid technology not so populate in USA and Europe but doing big business in Japan. There's an ICE but it's there as a generator and the battery always drives the wheels, but on the downside there's no plug socket, so you rely on gas to charge the battery. Is that an EV as fossils are the only fuel? Nissan call it an electrified vehicle because it's the same experience as an EV but with a much smaller 1.8kWh, and therefore lighter, plus cheaper battery. It's in the Nissan Note and soon the Serena family van. It can do just 1.7 miles before the battery expires. Seeking Alpha says: "Given its hybrid nature, environmental consciousness may somewhat hinder adoption of the e-Power technology in Europe and China but it's unclear how European and Chinese governments will react to Nissan's technology. we are taking for granted that California's ZEV Mandate provides a loophole for e-Power technology just as it does in the case of the range-extended version of the BMW i3." The note is already Japan's best-selling car with more buyers wanting e-power it's soon to dethrone the mighty Toyota Prius. Would you buy one? You'd still have to fill it up all the time. You do get more miles as it's technically more efficient to run the ICE as generator. Is this technology which is going to be outdated by the time battery prices drop?   https://seekingalpha.com/article/4185100-nissans-e-power-technology-annihilating-toyota-prius-japan-can-also-threat-tesla-lithium   VW ENDS GERMAN DIESEL FLEET RENEWAL SUBSIDIES "Volkswagen Group let its diesel fleet renewal program in Germany expire at the end of June, a company source said, deciding against extending it for a third time" reports AutoNews.com: "While some of the highest discounts were initially offered on cars equipped with alternative drivetrains such as full-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles, over time VW Group focused its incentive more on replacing old diesels with new ones."   http://europe.autonews.com/article/20180703/ANE/180709926/vw-ends-german-diesel-fleet-renewal-subsidies   TOLL DISCOUNTS OFFER ONE MORE REASON TO GO ELECTRIC In Ireland, "Drivers of electric and plug-in hybrid cars will pay a reduced fee on toll roads across the country from today" says Michael Cogley for The Times: "Those driving full electric vehicles will only pay half the toll rate while those using plug-in hybrids will get a reduction of 25 per cent. Drivers of fully hybrid cars, which rely on petrol or diesel to generate their initial energy, will receive no saving under the scheme."   https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/toll-discounts-offer-one-more-reason-to-go-electric-vwfcc8p2n     AUSTRALIAN FAST-CHARGERS SMASH EV “RANGE ANXIETY” ON AUTOBAHN Yesterday I was bashing Australia a bit for not having more solar and using that to power EV's considering they have all the sunshine. So let me redress that with some praise. Sophie Vorrath at RenewEconomy: "Electric vehicle drivers on Germany’s Autobahn can now recharge their car batteries almost as fast as filling up a petrol tank, using Australian made technology. Brisbane based EV infrastructure company Tritium said on Tuesday it had exported and installed 12 of the most powerful electric car chargers on the market to a site in Germany" The IONITY project is installing 350kW charging goodness.   https://reneweconomy.com.au/australian-fast-chargers-smash-ev-range-anxiety-autobahn-38364/   SWEDENS JULY 1 STEEP VEHICLE TAX HIKE SPARKS LAST MINUTE JUNE CAR SALES FRENZY "Significant increases in annual vehicle taxes, particularly for vehicles with high CO2 emission came into effect July 1 this year. These tax hikes for higher polluting cars in particular were at the root of Junes car sales bonanza" says AID with a view to how it will affect EVs: "Perhaps most significant, the one-off subsidies for low-emission electric (BEV) and plug-in-hybrid cars have changed. In short, starting July 1 this year, buyers of new zero-emission BEVs will get a SEK60,000 (5,800) purchase bonus. The bonus is paid six months after first registrations."   http://www.eagleaid.com/AID-Newsletter-preorder-1813preview-a-Swedens-steep-vehicle-tax-hike-sparks-last-minute-June-car-sales-frenzy.htm   TOURIST TAX TO FUND ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATIONS Mallorca is a beautiful island off the coast of Spain which Mrs Lee and I love to visit because of the sunshine and a chance to practice our terrible Spanish. But I never many see EVs. Now it turns out I may be helping pay for them! 500 rapid chargers will be installed using 10 million Euros of funds from tourists. A new policy will halt the sale of new diesel vehicles from 2025 and petrol fuelled cars from 2035 as the island moves to electric.   GRIDSERVE® ANNOUNCE UK-WIDE NETWORK OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE “FORECOURTS OF THE FUTURE” Here in the UK: "GRIDSERVE’s national network of Electric Forecourts™ will offer significantly more high power charging points than are currently available at most UK petrol stations, and a totally new customer-focused charging, retail and services offering". Toddington Harper, chief executive of GRIDSERVE, said: “Our plan is to deliver for electric vehicle charging what Amazon has done for shopping online – make it simple, price competitive, and a great customer experience”. The team is currently exploring relationships with landowners, developers, investors, EV manufacturers, fleet managers and retailers.   WHAT’S DRIVING OIL COMPANIES TO BUY ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING FIRMS? org has more thoughts on the recent purchase of Chargemaster by BP: "News of the Chargemaster acquisition comes less than a year after rival Shell shared plans to acquire NewMotion, a charging station company with more than 30,000 installations across 25 European countries. Other big oil and gas firms exploring alternative energy technologies include ExxonMobil, Chevron, and Saudi Aramco. Saudi Arabia’s largest commissioned solar power plant sits today in a parking lot at Aramco’s headquarters in Dhahran. And last year, it was reported that the national oil company was considering an investment of up to $5 billion in the renewable energy sector."     COMMUNITY New members of the EV gang on YouTube   You can listen to all previous 169 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Friday 29th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   BP TO BUY CHARGEMASTER, THE UK’S LARGEST ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING COMPANY And so the press release came through at 8am this morning, British Petroleum aka BP will buy Chargemaster plc, to become BP Chargemaster, just 10 years after it launched. All staff keep their jobs. The company with 6,500 charge points. There are 40,000 customers of the POLAR network, also owned by Chargemaster, and they pay a monthly subscription, get it as part of their home energy tariff or use it on a pay-as-you-go basis. BP said: "Combining BP's and Chargemaster's complementary expertise, experience and assets is an important step towards offering fast and ultra-fast charging at BP sites across the UK and to BP becoming the leading provider of energy to low carbon vehicles, on the road or at home." David Martell Chief Exec of Chargemaster said: "I am truly excited to lead the Chargemaster team into a new era backed by the strength and scale of BP, which will help us maintain our market-leading position and grow the national POLAR charging network to support the large range of exciting new electric vehicles that are coming to market in the next couple of years" Business Green: "The move follows rival Shell's acquisition last year of European EV charging network Newmotion and provides the latest evidence that leading oil majors are looking to diversify into clean technologies. BP customers in the UK can expect to access BP Chargemaster chargers on forecourts over the next 12 months." This is small change in the grand scheme of the oil industry. Business Green add "The deal is the latest major low carbon investment from the company, which earlier this year returned to the solar market with its $200m investment in PV developer Lightsource, of which the oil giant now owns a 43 per cent share." BP predicts there will be 12 million electric cars on Britain's roads by 2040, a marked increase from the 135,000 in use last year. This Is Money: "In October last year, BP's rival, Shell, snapped up Dutch-based NewMotion, which is the owner of one of Europe's biggest electric charging networks" Fred at Electrek's take was; "f you have a weird feeling about an oil company buying into EV technology and companies, it’s maybe because you remember that oil companies once bought and killed some EV tech. Chevron did it with the battery tech in the original Toyota RAV4 EV and there were a few other examples with electric motors in the 1990s. But I think I can safely say that it won’t be repeated. EVs have become so mainstream this time around that killing off a few startups wouldn’t have a major impact." The Independent looks to the future: "It also plans to roll out ultra-fast charging equipment, which will include 150kW rapid chargers, which will take just 10 minutes to give cars enough energy to drive 100 miles."   HYUNDAI KONA UK PRICES               PANASONIC FLAGS BATTERY SHORTAGES "A senior Panasonic Corp official on Thursday said a pickup in production of Tesla Inc’s Model 3 cars, after earlier delays, has resulted in occasional battery shortages." accordingt to news agency Reuters: "Panasonic currently produces battery cells for Tesla in Japan as well as at Tesla’s so-called Gigafactory in the U.S. state of Nevada, which Panasonic jointly operates. Panasonic sees batteries as central to its plan to boost automotive business revenue to 2.5 trillion yen by the year through March 2022 from 1.8 trillion yen ($16.3 billion) estimated for this financial year." Yoshio Ito head of Panasonic’s automotive business, said at the company’s general shareholders meeting: "“There has been a sharp improvement in production equipment and we are now occasionally having battery shortages. I wouldn’t say the delay (in Tesla’s Model 3 production) had no impact on our business, but we are in close communications with Tesla and working to steadily improve production"   BYD WANTS THE BATTERY CROWN And although Elon Musk has often talked about creating the worlds biggest building, "BYD Co. is building what would become the world’s largest vehicle-battery factory next year in an effort by the Chinese electric-car maker to increase capacity and help revive earnings growth." If not by floor space, then by capacity. com say: "The plant will have an annual capacity of 24 gigawatt-hours when it is fully in use in 2019, enough to equip 1.2 million BYD Tang electric cars, according to the manufacturer backed by Warren Buffett. BYD invested $1.5 billion in the factory, which will help meet the company’s plan to boost its battery-making capability almost fourfold by 2020."   CARE BY VOLVO SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE LAUNCHES " Care by Volvo subscription service is about to debut its most desirable vehicle, as the S60 T8 Polestar Engineered sedan will be available exclusively via the (iOS-only) app starting at noon ET today" reportrs Engadget: "Only 20 of the AWD cars are coming to the US, with upgraded plug-in hybrid powertrains capable of 415HP thanks to a finely tuned ECU, 19-inch rims, upgraded suspension and gold-painted Brembo brake calipers. With the service, the cars will cost $1,100 that covers the car plus accompanying insurance and maintenance. The only things you'll need to pay for otherwise are taxes/registration fees and gas/electricity."   REVEALED: 34,000 FINED LAST YEAR FOR NOT TAXING VEHICLES WHICH ARE FREE TO TAX "Drivers paid over £500,000 in fines last year for not applying to tax vehicles which cost nothing to tax, data obtained by MoneySavingExpert.com shows." "Figures released under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that between April 2017 and April 2018 the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) issued 34,012 penalties to the registered keepers of 'nil-rated' vehicles - vehicles which don't cost any money to tax." according to MoneySavingExpert.com Failure to register, even tho though it's registering to pay £0, could get you an £80 fine.   COMMUNITY MYEV.com – a new website from the team at InsideEVs. Thursday 22nd February 2018. On the podcast today… you’ll hear about Mercedes Trucks doubting Tesla claims, and what about a drone coming to your rescue if you run out of energy…   UK HIGH COURT RULES ON ILLEGAL POLLUTION, ELECTRIC CARS THE ANSWER?   We’ll start with breaking news about air quality and what that means for EV adoption, not just here in the UK. In some ways this is similar to how California, because it’s such a huge car market, when they imposed strict emission limits the car makers made changes which benefited everything. Yesterday in London the high court told the UK government it must do more to tackle illegal levels of nitrogen dioxide pollution.   For the last 8 years the UK has been in breach of the legal limits on pollution, and twice now have lost a court battle. Those we should thank are environmental lawyers Client Earth. Following previous defeats in court, the UK government had to promise to ban new petrol and diesel cars from 2040. Well specifically, all new cars from 2040 had to have a degree of electrification, it’s not a BAN on selling fossil fuels. That means hybrids would be acceptable.   Mr Justice Garnham, the judge, said the current plan by UK Gov was “seriously flawed”.  So what does that mean and what are the implications of this ruling? The government will have to go further and faster in their plans to adopt EVs. So that could mean bringing the date of the ban forward, say, to 2030. Or it could keep the 2040 ban and push it further, saying all new cars had to be full electric. That’s doubtful.   However there are strict limits which must be reached by 2021 so it’s more likely the 45 local authorities will have to introduce emissions free zones, or Ultra Low Emission Zones, following the lead of London. That will lead to more negative publicity for diesel, further hurting sales, and inevitably increasing the adoption of electric cars.   On the whole this is good news, but policy needs to be clearer and more concrete. Diesel sales will continue to fall off the cliff edge they’re on, however buyers aren’t moving to EVs quick enough, meaning an older fleet of dirty diesels is staying on the roads. With clear policy, companies can make the investments they need to in electrified transport.   https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/feb/21/high-court-rules-uk-air-pollution-plans-unlawful   DAIMLER AG DOUBT TESLA CLAIM ON TESLA SEMI TRUCK TECH   Next, the World’s biggest truck maker, Mercedes, has cast doubt on Tesla’s plans for their semi truck. Daimler plans to release their electric truck in 2021 called the e-Actros, following initial trials later this year.   They will have a maximum range of 200kms, or around 120-130 miles, and will be investing over 500 million euros per year, starting this year.  However the claims of Tesla seems to have ruffled feathers. According to Bloomberg.com, the head of trucks Martin Daum, is reported to have made comments yesterday to reporters including: “If Tesla really delivers on this promise, we’ll obviously buy two trucks -- one to take apart and one to test because if that happens, something has passed us by,” Daum said. “But for now, the same laws of physics apply in Germany and in California".   If Tesla do manage to release a semi truck in 2019 with all the promised specs, there will be many difficult conversation at large truck makers all around the world, because they will have made an expensive miscalculation.   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-02-21/daimler-throws-shade-at-tesla-e-trucks-plan-as-rivalry-heats-up   APPLE BUY COBALT DIRECT AS EV BATTERY DEMAND GROWS   Apple, the world’s largest company, is being affected by the EV rush according to a report by Inverse.com. They are looking at buying cobalt direct from the source to ensure their devices aren’t affected and the lithium-ion batteries in them.   EVs use around 1,000 times as much cobalt as a mobile phone battery, and with 320 million EVs predicted to be on the road by 2040, Apple are looking ahead to secure supplies.   https://www.inverse.com/article/41495-apple-tesla-electric-cars-batteries   SSANGYYONG BRING NEW ELECTRIC SUV TO GENEVA   14 days until the Geneva motor show and Ssangyyong are yet another auto maker showing off their electric products. The e-SIV will be shows off, it’s a zero emission crossover SUV. e-SIV stands for Electronic Smart Interface Vehicle and they’re focusing on tech, and autonomous driving.   They are looking at a 188bhp which is rated at 150kmph. They haven’t revealed battery size but they’re hinting at 50mins to charge to 80% and 450km range. So what do you think? 60kWh battery and 100kW or 120kW on board charger, to achieve that rate and range?   https://auto.ndtv.com/news/2018-geneva-motor-show-ssangyong-teases-e-siv-electric-concept-1815211   CHARGEPOINT TO ENTER UK MARKET WITH NEW CAR CHARGER BUNDLE   Chargepoint is looking to install more home chargers in the UK thanks to closer partnerships with car makers who already support their main rival Chargemaster.   In the U.S. Chargepoint have a 70% market share so could bring big competition to the UK market. Should they do deals with manufacturers, they could bundle them with new car purchases to make it as easy as possible to buy an EV. Or as they say – frictionless! Bear in mind than Daimler and BMW are investors in Chargepoint, but both have relationships with Chargemaster.   Thus far in the UK Chargepoint is probably best known for a deal with Instavolt which install 50kW DC fast chargers, with around 600 agreed to be installed. To put that in perspective, Chargemaster has 6000 charge points with 2000 more planned for the POLAR network. Read more at cleanevergynews.co.uk   https://www.cleanenergynews.co.uk/news/transport/chargepoint-sets-up-market-competition-with-impending-launch-of-home-ev-cha   DELIVERY DRONE BRINGS YOU EMERGENCY ELECTRONS   And finally to end with something a little more light-hearted, and this is the idea that if you run out of energy, what’s the best way to be recovered because you can’t be towed?  Some solutions have been suggested such as Hyundai turning up with an IONIQ and using it as a donor vehicle.  But now, a giant drone has been suggested. The ‘Volt’ will be summoned via app, fly to your location, and deliver enough power to get you going.   http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-gadget/forget-charging-booths-the-volt-drone-automatically-flies-to-your-electric-car-to-charge-it       Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
