When we build a career we have choices. One choice is to dig deep into a specific areas of expertise and become a total domain expert, and another is to have a broader reach with varied experiences. Is one better than the other? In today's episode my fabulous guest, Meg Thomson, is sharing her diverse journey with us having led projects at Apple, Samsung, BCG Digital Ventures, Coles Supermarkets, Polestar Electric Cars, and OVO Energy. We are talking today about:Going after a broad career - the floodlight (multiple sectors) versus the torchlight approach (subject matter expert in one sector)Thriving beyond your comfort zoneThe power of a clear vision to galvanise teams during crises Meg's Career Toolbelt analogy : how to expand your 'toolbelt' and look for new experiences and opportunities to broaden your skills and experiences throughout your careerSomething Meg said:"If I am not uncomfortable, I am not growing and I am not learning. I have chosen to become a a strategic operations and customer experience expert globally, but I am always learning a new sector, whether its management consulting, tech with Apple, electric cars or FMCG. The investment I have to put in early-on in a role is to learn the sector, as well as the pain points of the customer. I will ask lots of questions, be humble and acknowledge that I don't know everything and lean on others' expertise; it's a steep learning curve!" The Human Experience: How To Make Life Better For Your Customers And Create A More Successful Organization by John Sills About the Book: The essential guide to creating a successful organization by making things easier, better, and more straightforward for your customers. Across all sectors, organizations' fixation with functionality has meant that the 'human' elements of the customer's experience have become neglected. Strict processes and automated procedures have created organizations full of people who aren't allowed to act in a 'human' way. As a result, and despite these new technologies, customers are no more satisfied than they were a decade ago (according to the Institute of Customer Service) and, according to Edelman, they now trust big organizations even less than they did in the past. In The Human Experience, John Sills draws upon extensive research and illustrative case studies to explain that the emotional experience is just as important as the functional one, and, if done right, will create a more efficient business. He also demonstrates that the customer experience is not just the responsibility of front-line employees, but shared across the company, from the CEO operating as the spokesperson of the business to the programmers developing a seamless and welcoming user interface. Whether you're a well-established incumbent or an early-stage start-up, on either end of your product or service is a human. Packed full of practical advice and engaging case studies, The Human Experience is the ultimate guide to creating a culture and an experience with humanity at its heart, helping to develop a customer base that will stay with an organization, and a company that will grow in an increasingly efficient way. About the Author: After starting his career at a market stall in Essex, John Sills has spent the last twenty-five years working in and with companies around the world to make things better for customers. He's advised organizations such as Sky, The Body Shop, Ovo Energy, Invesco, Morrisons, eBay, and UNICEF. Now Managing Partner at customer-led growth company The Foundation, John also spent twelve years at HSBC, starting on the frontline and finishing as Head of Customer Innovation. John works closely with Young Enterprise, a charity that helps young adults become the next generation of entrepreneurs, and is a mentor for The School of Marketing. His writing has been featured in The Guardian, Management Today, and WARC, as well as having work exhibited at the Imperial War Museum, The Foundling Museum, and as part of the Bloomsbury Festival. And, interesting fact – he was an award-winning model! The best customer service bots deliver on consumers' preference for fast, first-interaction resolution. And when an interaction is too complex, seamless integration enables the bot to transfer a consumer and the context of their interaction to an agent. These boss bots are essential as consumers' use of chatbots continues to rise, but their satisfaction with the experience declines. According to the benchmarking report “The State of Customer Experience,” 38% of consumers interacted with chatbots for a service interaction last year, up from one-third in 2021. But the percentage of consumers who were highly satisfied with their bot experience declined from 25% to 21% in that same timeframe. In this episode of Tech Talks in 20, Lucas Woodward, a software engineer at OVO Energy, joins us to explain how to use automation to build better bots, faster. He'll also reveal how he automates and tests bot integration with other CX technologies.

In this episode, we look at the world of green energy certificates, which is getting more complex. Jon is joined by Toby Ferenczi. Toby is the CEO and co-founder of Granular Energy a company building software solutions for utilities and other stakeholders to access, manage and trade time-stamped energy certificates. Toby also founded EnergyTag, an industry-led, non-profit initiative to define and build a market for time-stamped energy certificates. Welcome back to episode 2 of the Black Girl Finance Podcast. This week we are talking about financial privilege and privilege in general, a conversation sparked by the now infamous Molly Mae conversation with Steven Barlett on his Diary of a Ceo podcast. I share my thoughts. The second topic is the customer service failure from OVO energy. At a time when people are anxious about the imminent rising cost of energy bills amongst other financial strains, it's not the kind of customer service email you expect to get signed off, but it did, so let's explore. What's it all about? The electrification of transport continues at pace (literally and metaphorically), and one of the most interesting areas of growth, particularly for those who have to deal with high levels of local and regional road traffic congestion, is electric taxi's. One of the leading pioneers in this sector is Vertical Aerospace. I was able to speak to founder and CEO Stephen Fitzpatrick ahead of his hot footing to New York to ring the bell on their NYSE public Listing on 16th December. We talk disruption, electrification, innovation and of course entrepreneurship. I hope you enjoy the episode. About Stephen Fitzpatrick: Cleantech entrepreneur Stephen Fitzpatrick founded Vertical Aerospace in 2016, an electric aircraft company which is pioneering electric aviations. The Bristol, UK-based company has partnered with Microsoft, Rolls-Royce, Honeywell, GKN and Solvay to build one of the world's most advanced electric VTOLs (vertical take-off and landing). Its VA-X4 aircraft will be capable of speeds of 200mph, a range of over 100miles, near silent when in flight and with zero operating emissions. Vertical has 1,350 conditional pre-orders of its aircraft for $5.4bn from the likes of American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Avolon and Bristow. The VA-X4 will be delivered to its customers, after certification, in 2024. Stephen is also the founder of OVO Energy, the UK's largest independent energy company supplying British homes with 100% renewable energy. OVO hopes to decarbonise 5m British homes by 2030. About Vertical Aerospace: Vertical Aerospace is pioneering electric aviation. Over the past five years, Vertical has focused on building the most experienced and senior team in the eVTOL industry, who have over 1,700 combined years of engineering experience, and have certified and supported over 30 different civil and military aircraft and propulsion systems. Vertical's unrivalled top-tier partner ecosystem is expected to de-risk operational execution and its pathway to certification, allow for a lean cost structure and enable production at scale. Vertical has received conditional pre-orders for a total of up to 1,350 aircraft from American Airlines, Avolon, Bristow and Iberojet, which includes pre-order options from Virgin Atlantic and Marubeni, and in doing so, is creating multiple potential near term and actionable routes to market. In June 2021, Vertical Aerospace announced a SPAC merger with Broadstone Acquisition Corp (NYSE: BSN). Show #783 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 18th May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA GIGAFACTORY 1 COULD GROW AS PARTNER PANASONIC REPORTS MORE PROFITS "Not only did Tesla pull a profit in the first quarter of 2020, but its battery partner Panasonic said on Monday its battery business recorded earnings in the black, too, for the second time. Now, Gigafactory 1, based in Nevada, could see an expansion." says Roadshow by CNET: "Panasonic Chief Financial Officer Hirokazu Umeda specifically said the company was "in discussions right now" to expand work at the facility. Although the company is no longer Tesla's exclusive battery provider (the company works with LG Chem in China), the partnership has blossomed in recent years and recorded two profitable quarters. Umeda mentioned demand is beyond the current capacity of 35 gigawatts per year." And from that Reuters report, they say: "Umeda hinted that Panasonic has been developing new batteries with Tesla. “We will be working to improve materials and technologies throughout this financial year,” he said. The Tesla battery business provided a bright spot in Panasonic’s otherwise grim earnings, hit by plant closures and supply chain disruptions for its laptops, washing machines, automotive components and factory equipment. Panasonic has decided to exit solar cell production at Tesla’s New York plant this year. It also decided not to build a new battery plant for Tesla in China. The U.S. car maker has entered into partnerships with South Korea’s LG Chem Ltd (051910.KS) and China’s CATL" https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-gigafactory-nevada-reopen-production-elon-musk https://www.reuters.com/article/us-panasonic-results-idUSKBN22U0MF ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES TO FALL 18% IN 2020 "Sales of electric passenger vehicles are forecast to fall 18% in 2020, to 1.7 million worldwide – with the coronavirus crisis interrupting ten successive years of strong growth." according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance: "However, sales of combustion engine cars are set to drop even faster this year (by 23%), and the long-term electrification of transport is projected to accelerate in the years ahead. BNEF’s analysis suggests that global sales of internal combustion engine, or ICE, cars peaked in 2017 and will continue their long-term decline after a temporary post-crisis recovery. For the first time, BNEF sees overall new passenger vehicle sales peaking in 2036 as changing global demographics, increasing urbanization and more shared mobility outweigh the effects of economic development – though the fleet size keeps growing. Electric models are seen accounting for 3% of global car sales in 2020, rising to 7% in 2023, at some 5.4 million units." https://bnef.turtl.co/story/evo-2020/ AS COVID-19 HITS ELECTRIC VEHICLES, SOME THRIVE, OTHERS DIE And quoting the BNEF report, Bloomberg today looked at which countries will drive EV adoption: "The pandemic ravaged economy is expected to give electric vehicles a boost in China, Europe and countries committed to sparking battery power via financial stimulus and infrastructure spending, In the U.S., electric vehicles sales will shrink to just 1.7% of the personal auto market in 2021. At the same time, the sector will swell to 8.1% of all sales in China, which accounts for the largest share of global EV sales, and 5% of those in Europe, the BNEF report says." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-05-19/as-covid-19-hits-electric-vehicles-some-thrive-others-die?sref=W369vOBR VW PARKS CARS WHEREVER THEY GO In an article translated (Google translate!) from German: "Volkswagen , the largest automobile manufacturer in the world, they are currently mainly occupied with parking. The group has had difficulties with software development for quite some time - the electric car ID.3 is therefore pre-produced without a complete operating system, in the hope that the software will be added later when it is finally ready. In the meantime, thousands of ID.3s are parked as soulless cases, partly on the premises of the VW factory in Zwickau, as shown here, partly in a huge parking lot in Saxony, which VW does not like to show to the public. But now the car manufacturer could soon run out of space: Because not only does VW have software problems with the production of the ID.3, but recently also with the good old Golf. Delivery of the Golf 8 had to be stopped because the emergency assistant was not working. Nevertheless, the company wants to continue producing the Golf 8 and simply, exactly, park thousands of cars somewhere until this pretty embarrassing software problem is solved." https://www.sueddeutsche.de/wirtschaft/vw-golf-software-problem-1.4911260 2020 BMW X5 XDRIVE45E REVIEW – THE NEW BEST BUY "Because the X5 is one of the best-selling cars it has on sale today and keeping the fleet’s CO2 emissions in check is a tricky ordeal. A hybrid will definitely help out with that, especially considering the tax systems in various countries around the world." says BMWBlog: "The new BMW X5 xDrive45e came with a host of improvements compared to its predecessor. t low speeds it does emit a hum to warn pedestrians, but it would still cause a couple of frowns from people as they probably had no idea BMW has an X5 hybrid. Whereas the old hybrid X5 had a 9.2 kWh battery, the new one can store more than 2.5 times that, being rated for 24 kWh out of which you can use 21 kWh. So that’s a big hike, even though the physical size of the battery didn’t change that much. Keep the pedal glued to the floor and speed just keeps ticking up. This car picks up speed at an alarming rate. It may be a hybrid, 2.5-ton monster but it can move. 0-62 takes just 5.6 seconds and you’ll go all the way up to 250 km/h (155 mph) if you dare." https://www.bmwblog.com/2020/05/18/2020-bmw-x5-xdrive45e-review/ HYUNDAI MOTOR’S EVS A POPULAR CHOICE IN POLICE FLEETS AROUND EUROPE "A growing number of police forces around Europe are turning to Hyundai EVs to use in their fleets. Amid growing concerns about inner-city air pollution, zero-emission vehicles such as battery electric (BEV) and fuel cell electric (FCEV) vehicles present an attractive solution for police officers’ mobility needs." says Automotiveworld.com: "Hyundai’s best-selling all-electric SUV Kona Electric is a popular choice for police forces in countries like Switzerland, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. A year ago, the police force of the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland added 13 Kona Electric models to their fleet – five as police cars and eight as civilian vehicles. In the Netherlands, police forces in Amsterdam, East Netherlands and Central Netherlands are also testing Kona Electric’s suitability as a police cruiser. Its long driving range and fast charging make it an attractive choice for police use. Kona Electrics can be found in the police fleets in Valencia, Spain, in both the 39 kWh and 64 kWh editions. And in the U.K., Sussex Police and North Wales Police already have one Kona Electric each in their fleets. Additionally, Hampshire Police have ordered nine Kona Electric models for their fleet, which will be delivered early next month." https://www.automotiveworld.com/news-releases/hyundai-motors-evs-a-popular-choice-in-police-fleets-around-europe/ KIA E-NIRO VS KIA SOUL EV "Now, though, there's an all-new Soul EV, which uses the same 64kWh battery and 201bhp electric motor as its e-Niro sibling. And that raises an important question if you like the idea of a fully electric family SUV: which one is better?" asks WhatCar? "If the moment does take you, you can hustle both cars down a country road at a reasonable lick, but we’d describe their handling as tidy rather than fun. Of the two, it's the e-Niro that's more agile, because it leans less than the taller, marginally more top-heavy-feeling Soul, plus its steering reacts more naturally; the Soul's is quicker but not as progressively weighted, and that takes a bit of getting used to." https://www.whatcar.com/news/kia-e-niro-vs-kia-soul-ev/n21450 MITSUBISHI EXTENDS 10,000 FREE ELECTRIC MILES OFFER ON OUTLANDER PHEV "Mitsubishi Motors in the UK has extended its 10,000 Free Green Miles offer for Outlander PHEV buyers until September. Offered in partnership with OVO Energy, the incentive provides drivers of the plug-in hybrid SUV with 10,000 miles worth of free electricity." according to AM Online "Customers will receive a £20.40 credit in their OVO account each month, for 24 months. The deal also includes Polar Plus membership, so Outlander PHEV drivers can charge away from home for free." https://www.am-online.com/news/car-manufacturer-news/2020/05/19/mitsubishi-offers-10-000-free-electric-miles-with-outlander-phev WITH ELECTRIC VEHICLES, BRAND REPUTATION IS NOT A SURE THING "When the topic turns to brand reputation and electric vehicles, the case seems easy enough. Zero emission cars make an important contribution to decarbonization, and that reflects nicely on the auto companies who produce them. However, even the simplest of brand calculations can take an unexpected turn when politics are involved." writes TriplePundit: "Officials in Alameda County, California, had been working with Tesla on a May 18 reopening plan for its Fremont facility, but Musk launched a ferocious attack on Twitter demanding an earlier opening. The result was a blinding blitz of free publicity, during which Musk restarted his factory in Fremont, California days before Ford and GM were set to open. If the idea was to re-assert Tesla’s image as a maverick bucking the entrenched industry tide and bureaucrats alike, Musk certainly succeeded on that score. Last week the president tweeted his approval of Musk’s tactics over the Fremont opening, writing that “California should let Tesla & @elonmusk open the plant, NOW. It can be done Fast & Safely!” If things continue in this vein, it seems that Musk may accomplish the seemingly impossible task of turning Trump voters into Tesla buyers." https://www.triplepundit.com/story/2020/electric-vehicles-brand-reputation-not-sure-thing/120316 QUESTION OF THE WEEK Should Dyson have continued to make a £150,000 EV, or should we only make EVs realistic? Show #687 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 4th February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. UK PLANS TO BAN NEW INTERNAL-COMBUSTION CARS BY 2035 "A ban on the sale of new gasoline, diesel, and even hybrid cars could go into effect in the UK as soon as 2035, under a new proposal by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. That deadline is five years earlier than previously planned." reports Autoblog: "The UK government in 2018 said it planned to outlaw the sale of gasoline and diesel new cars and vans starting in 2040, but that proposal still permitted ultra-low-emissions hybrids. The new proposal not only moves the date five years closer, it permits only zero-emissions vehicles." "Interestingly, the UK’s upcoming ban actually includes hybrid vehicles, which have long been promoted by veteran carmakers as “electrified” cars. Yet save for plug-in hybrids, which can be charged from an EV charging station, hybrids like the Toyota Prius still use petrol as their sole source of fuel." is how Teslarati sees it: "With hybrid cars now a part of the ICE ban because of their need for petrol, the UK will be focusing on pushing pure electric cars." The Telegraph newspaper said: "Britain’s biggest car maker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and other luxury UK auto firms will be among the biggest victims of a ban on diesel and petrol sales by 2035, analysts fear. Experts said that JLR is seriously exposed as profits depend on the large SUVs produced by its Land Rover arm, which outsell Jaguar models by three to one. It is understood that executives at the firm had no advance warning of Government plans to bring forward a ban on diesel and petrol sales from 2040 to 2035. Moving the deadline could also mean car companies writing off earlier investment in hybrid technology." David Greenwood, professor of advanced propulsion at Warwick University, said: “It’s very difficult to deliver big and heavy cars, like full-size SUVs, which are fully electric and have the long range that people expect.” According to BBC News: "The change in plans, which will be subject to a consultation, comes after experts warned the previous target date of 2040 would still leave old conventional cars on the roads following the clean-up date of 2050." And finally from Thisismoney.co.uk: "However, the inclusion of hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles - marketed until now as green models - might have come as quite a shock to some, especially the manufacturers who have heavily invested in their development and the UK motorists who've already paid a premium to buy one. What came as more of a shock was the decision to also outlaw hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars from that date too, meaning those that run on a combination of petrol or diesel and electricity will also be drummed out of showrooms in 15 year's time. A decision to remove financial incentives to help motorists buy plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) at the end of 2018 was the first signal that the government might turn its back on hybrid technology." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/02/04/uk-could-ban-gasoline-diesel-and-hybrid-cars-starting-in-2035/ https://www.teslarati.com/uk-death-sentence-ice-cars-hybrids/ https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2020/02/05/electric-car-sales-surge-confusion-reigns-policy-hybrids/ https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-51366123 FORD ENGINEER TALKS MACH-E SPECS "A Ford engineer hosted an “ask me anything” (AMA) thread on Reddit over the weekend. In it, they let us in on a few new bits of information about the car (including battery and charging specs), and talked about his opinion of it, particularly in comparison to the Tesla Model Y, which will target a similar market as the Mach-E." writes Electrek: "The engineer was less complimentary of Tesla’s manufacturing capabilities. While they had great things to say about Tesla’s battery and motor engineering (which “outpaces the industry by 5yrs easy”)The Mach-E has a face camera in the steering wheel cluster which will be used for future autonomous driving purposes. It will be able to detect whether or not the driver is in the seat and paying attention to the road. The engineer suggests that this will be better than Tesla’s “autopilot nag” warnings which require steering wheel movement every once in a while, allowing a “more natural experience and you can rest your arms.” Also, the Mach-E’s cluster will be capable of side-by-side displays of both Ford’s “sync” infotainment system and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto." https://electrek.co/2020/02/03/ford-engineer-talks-mach-e-specs-teases-features-compares-to-tesla-model-y/ PRODUCTION AT GIGAFACTORY TURNS PROFITABLE "Panasonic reports an increase in automotive battery sales (sadly there are no detailed numbers for the subcategory). The main factor is an increase of 21700 cylindrical cell type sales/production in North America at the Tesla Gigafactory. The production lines for Tesla are now profitable not only on a monthly basis, but for the entire Q4 2019." says InsideEVs: "On the other hand, cylindrical cells produced in Japan (the 18650 type), for cars like the Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X, continue to decrease. The decrease affected also prismatic batteries in North America." https://insideevs.com/news/396595/panasonic-q4-2019-report/ NORWAY SOLD 4,236 NEW ELECTRIC CARS IN JANUARY "4,236 electric cars were newly registered in Norway in the first month of the new year. The market share of BEV in passenger car registrations was thus 44.3%. By far the most popular model across all drive systems was the Audi e-tron." writes electrive: "The 3,270 hybrid passenger cars included 1,919 plug-in hybrids. If both types of drive are added together, 78.5 per cent of all newly registered passenger cars in Norway in December were thus equipped with an electric or plug-in hybrid drive." https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/04/norway-sold-4236-new-electric-cars-in-january/ FORMULA E REVEALS GEN2 EVO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP CAR Formula E and the FIA have today given fans a first look at the newly named Gen2 EVO, using a reimagined design that will debut in season seven when the electric racing series competes under the banner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The modifications to the bodywork have been made midway through the current four-year cycle of the ‘Gen2’ era, to provide a fresh new look for Formula E. The car will continue to be fitted with 18-inch MICHELIN Pilot Sport all-weather tyres, specially designed for use in both wet and dry conditions. Covers will come off the Gen2 EVO for the first time on the FIA stand at the Geneva International Motor Show on March 3. OVO ENERGY AND MITSUBISHI TEAM UP TO OFFER FREE EV MILES "Customers who purchase a Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) will be able to charge it for free for the first 10,000 miles of its use through OVO Energy, the two companies have today announced." accordingg to BusinessGreen: "New owners of the Outlander would have to switch to OVO's 100 per cent green energy Energy EV Everywhere tariff to benefit from the deal, after which their accounts wouild would credited with £20 each month for 24 months to cover the typical cost of charging the vehicle. Some 50,000 Outlanders have been registered in the UK since 2014. The plug-in hybrid SUV consumes electricity at a rate of 3.68 miles/kWh, which equates to 2,717kWh of energy to travel 10,000 miles." https://www.businessgreen.com/news/4009988/ovo-energy-mitsubishi-team-offer-free-ev-miles GERMAN CAR SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE, HAS ELECTRIC CARS "Cluno is a German company that helps its customers drive in a cost-effective manner. It’s marketed toward those who would rent a car often but don’t want to own one. It includes several different electric vehicle models in its lineup." reports CleanTechnica: "Cluno has six electric vehicles for you to choose from. The lowest-priced option is the Renault ZOE 50 Experience at €449 per month. The Tesla Model 3, Long Range AWD is the most expensive option at €1,299 per month." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/02/04/uk-could-ban-gasoline-diesel-and-hybrid-cars-starting-in-2035/ RENAULT MEGANE 2020: PLUG-IN TECH OFFERED FOR FIRST TIME ON HATCH "The new Megane also offers a new powertrain with the introduction of E-Tech plug-in hybrid. This features a four-cylinder 1.6-litre petrol engine with two electric motors and an innovative multi-mode clutch-less gearbox. With its 9.8kWh battery it can run on full-electric mode for 30 miles in mixed cycle and 40 miles in urban cycle." says leasing.com https://leasing.com/car-leasing-news/renault-megane-2020/ NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… On a scale on 1-10, (1 being not at all, 10 being completely) how much does/did environment come into your love of EVs? As a trained occupational psychologist, Kim Atherton has worked with leaders and organizations to understand how they create high-performance teams. She joined Ovo Energy - a green energy tech company in the UK - when it was just 50 people in a barn, and helped to scale the company to 2,500 employees. During her time at Ovo, she recognized that misalignment was a problem for companies, which inspired her to found Just3Things, a startup that helps organizations improve alignment at scale. Alignment With The Vision In 2012 Kim was in the final interview stage at a large bank. It was a great career move on paper, but the thought of getting out of bed every day to do succession planning for a big bank just didn’t excite her. About that time she met the founder of Ovo Energy, who told her that he needed someone to help him build the world’s best company, someone who would be willing to unlearn traditional HR practices. Kim jumped at the opportunity to help scale Ovo as she believed in its vision. [Listen from 1:45] The mission and values of a company are more important than the compensation and prestige, Barry comments. A transformative purpose pulls people together: you’re willing to put up with more when you know it’s for the greater good. It keeps you going through the tough times. [Listen from 3:45] Aligning Values With Behavior Human beings pick up on behavioral cues almost unconsciously. Creating a company culture that aligns with your vision often means unlearning traditional practices, and being intentional about using processes that result in desired behaviors. Ovo knew their success depended on being nimble and agile, so they eschewed traditional competency-based interview practices in favor of interviewing based on learning agility. Kim says that you can always upskill an employee if they don’t have a certain programming ability, but you can’t train learning agility - you either have it or you don’t. [Listen from 6:50] In the fast-paced world of a startup company, full transparency and good communication are vital. You want to create an environment of psychological safety to empower your team to experiment and learn. Reiterate the vision often and embed activities around values to remind your team that we’re all part of a bigger purpose, Kim advises. [Listen from 12:15] Learning and Unlearning Employee Incentives Barry finds that the highest performing companies are those who experiment and figure out the right practices for their context. Kim agrees that experimentation and an efficient feedback loop enabled Ovo to learn what works best for them. For example, their experiment with removing the holiday policy taught them that, trendy though it was, it wasn’t ideal for them. We need guardrails, they learned, otherwise it’s really hard to do our jobs. At Just3Things, Kim finds that they’re unlearning all the time. Feedback from customers often challenges their assumptions and they have to rethink some aspect of the product. [Listen from 19:55] A Golden Thread Just3Things was inspired by the need for a goal-setting tool for cross-functional teams. Kim describes it as a simple and transparent tool where teams could see how the outcomes they are working on align with company strategy, then link their day to day tasks to the outcomes, forming a golden thread through the entire process. It started as a manual process at Ovo, but was developed into a digital tool when the concept proved useful in recouping lost productivity time. Kim describes how she discovered the need in the market for her product, and how she founded Just3Things to answer that market need. Barry comments that when you understand how your effort is aligning to positive customer outcomes, its an unending tap of motivation and experimentation. [Listen from 30:00] Resources Just3Things.com

What’s it all about? Tom is one of those, like me, that tried to bring business acumen to a very nascent, and very hippy, clean and renewable energy sector in the UK in the late 2000’s. His journey, passion and drivers are fascinating to share, as is the story of Kaluza, a company really creating the Internet of Energy (IoE), across a range of domestic devices, proving new incomes and opportunities for businesses and consumers. Take a listen. About our guest Tom Pakenham is Director of Electric Vehicles at Kaluza, OVO Group’s intelligent energy platform. Driving the transition to a distributed, zero-carbon energy system, the Kaluza platform is able to securely connect millions of smart devices and create mass flexibility, helping offset costly and carbon-intensive peaks. Tom plays a crucial role in scaling this unique technology across the fast-growing electric vehicle market. Before Kaluza, Tom helped lead OVO Energy’s transition from a pure kWh retail business into a diversified energy services company. In 2017 he spearheaded the launch of OVO’s ‘EV Everywhere’ energy bundle and developed industry-leading smart charging propositions for customers. Tom also developed strategic partnerships with key players including Chargemaster, the UK’s biggest provider of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, Indra Renewable Technologies, and ChargedEV. Prior to OVO, Tom founded greentomatocars in 2006 - the world’s first low emission taxi company, which he sold to global transport conglomerate Transdev. After selling greentomatocars, Tom launched greentomatoenergy - an energy efficiency and micro-renewables business - which was acquired by a private equity firm in 2013. After this, Tom led the Business Development and Innovation team at Transdev Plc. Tom graduated from Cambridge University with a History MA and has a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from BPP Law School. He is a qualified solicitor. About Kaluza Our mission is to securely connect all devices to an intelligent zero carbon grid Kaluza is an intelligent energy platform able to connect and control millions of smart devices across people’s homes, such as electric vehicles, heaters and batteries. The machine learning platform introduces new flexibility into the energy system by optimising individual devices to use energy during off-peak hours, when costs and carbon are lower. An OVO Group company, Kaluza operates end-to-end, providing software, hardware and in-home installation services to a range of partners and is driving the global transition to a distributed and secure, zero-carbon grid. This jam-packed edition of the podcast is all about advocating for the industrial case for cycling, in a bid to convince the government that more investment is needed in the cycling sector. We were invited along to a meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group (APPCG) in the Houses of Parliament to hear how the APPCG and Bicycle Association are working with government to raise the case for more cycling investment. We spoke to APPCG Co-Chair and MP, Ruth Bradbury, about her view on how government and industry can work together to affect change. We also caught up with Brompton’s Will Butler-Adams who was speaking in the meeting, and listened to his views on the topic. A few miles east saw TfL’s Best Cargo Bike competition get underway in the Queen Elizabeth Park, where we managed to pick Walking & Cycling Commissioner Will Norman’s brain about building a case for cycling that government will listen to. And finally, across the park at Plexel for OVO Energy’s cycling participation initiative launch, we caught up with British Cycling Policy Adviser and former Olympian, Chris Boardman MBE, about his views on what more can be done to advocate for cycling, and by whom.
Abby finally gets Laura back on the phone for a little OVO Energy Tour wrap up! Plus they discuss news in cycling recently and the new Taylor Swift music! Thank you to RawVelo for supporting the podcast! voxwomen.com/podcast ravel.com

Thursday 22nd March 2018. MUSK PAYDAY NEWS! His payday has been approved for a nominal value of $2.6bn, however that could be as much as $55bn worth of shares if he hits all the targets of Tesla being worth a mind-blowing $650bn. Including his current holding and presuming he doesn’t sell any shares, Elon Musk would then own 28% of Tesla, worth $182bn. As of 2017 the World’s richest person is Amazon’s Jezz Bezos at $112bn. VW EGOLF OFF THE MENU We’ll start with some good news about e-Golf sales, but if you’re listening in North America wanted to drive a new VW eGolf you better be quick. According to insight from InsideEVs, sales have been so strong here in Europe, they are almost out of stock. After all it was the best selling BEV in Western Europe according to InsideEVs sales scorecard. VW chairman Herbert Diess said: ““Our electric vehicle sales were three times more popular in 2017 than 2016 and the e-Golf nearly sold out, so it’s clear customers are willing to switch to EVs once the price is right.” NEXT STEPS FOR BMW Fresh news from just a few hours ago, at BMW’s Annual Accounts Press Conference they confirmed their next electric car will be the iX3. Then we’ll get the i4, previously known as the i Vision Dynamics. The only look we’ve had at it is in pure, utterly bonkers concept car form, but if the production EV was anywhere near it, it’s going to look great. From one pure battery electric vehicle (BEV) now in the guise of the i3, the i4 will be one of 12 battery-electric models BMW aims to have in showrooms by 2025. BMW CEO Harald Krueger said the i4 will be produced at the BMW's factory in Munich where it builds 3- and 4-series models. There’s also the electric MINI going into production in 2019, made here in the UK in Oxford as well as Mexico, before the electric version of the X3, the iX3, to be unveiled this year and available in 2020. In 2021 comes the iNEXT as their innovation flagbearer. But he wouldn’t say where in that timeline the i4 sits. BMW do expect, within 3 years, pure electric ranges will be 435 miles as the norm and 62miles normal for PHEVs. Autonews say BMW has secured naming rights for the badges i1 to i9 and iX1 to iX9. VW FACTORY INVESTMENT IN USA According to Fortune VW will be investing $340million in their Chattanooga factory to build a 5-seater SUV. At the New York International Auto Show on 30th March we’ll see their new SUV concept based on the MQB platform, which of course is designed for hybrid and PHEV options. The Chattanooga factory has been viewed as the likely location for VW’s plan to produce electric vehicles. POD POINT BREAK RECORDS In the UK, charging provider Pod Point has installed 67 charge points for Skanska, and it looks like it breaks the record for the largest in the country. And one of the largest in Europe too. It took them 2 weeks to install the 7kW chargers but, the key detail, they also included the infrastructure to add another 243 more. That would be 310 charge points in one location for Skanska employees to charge their cars whilst they work. Erik Fairbairn, chief executive of Pod Point, said: “This is the largest single site charge point installation that we’re aware of in the UK, but also a sign of a larger shift over the past six months, as more businesses wake up to the benefits of EVs. We’ve certainly seen a big increase in enquiries from companies wanting future proof charge point installations that can be scaled up as their fleets make the switch to electric.” Utility Week say “Recent research commissioned by Ovo Energy suggests existing EVs in the UK could contribute more than 114MW to the National Grid, enough to power over 300,000 homes. HYUNDAI ELECTRIFIES THE TUCSON “Hyundai will present the facelifted version of the third-gen Tucson next week” according to CarScoops, “on March 28, during a press conference at the New York Auto Show, which will be streamed live. The crossover slots between the Kona and Santa Fe Sport has been spied numerous times in prototype form with heavy camouflage covering its body. Hyundai has also confirmed hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the SUV”. “The 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric will join the other two in New York. The zero emission vehicle comes straight from the Geneva Motor Show, where it was revealed with a 133hp (135PS) electric motor and 39.2kWh battery pack. This version can be driven for up to 186miles (300km), whereas the long-range variant can travel up to 292miles (470km) and uses a 201hp (204PS) electric motor, paired to a 64kWh battery pack. As a final note, you can watch Hyundai’s press conference, which starts on March 28, at 12:45pm EST (5:45pm CET)” on CarScoops.com BMW 3-SERIES SPIED Finally the all new BMW 3-series has been spotted testing in the concept form and in full-on camo gear. This car will be huge for BMW. It simple must be a huge success. They want Audi A4 buyers to choose the 3-series instead, same for Merc C-Class buyers. It’s all new from the ground up. I have no doubt there will be a strong emphasis on plug ins and hybrids in the range. The hybrid tech might be the mildest of mild, just a 48v system to run systems and take the pressure of the ICE, or to do things like spool up the turbo ready for when the engine needs it. Anything which gets the CO2 down under the new WLTP emissions system which all cars must use from September this year. Since the first version of the Ford Fusion Energi in 2013 not much has happened on their electric front. Well, nothing actually apart from announcements. Now they’re updating it for the 2019 model year which includes a Hybrid and Phev. The Fusion Energi, the only plug in Ford sell now the C-Max Energi is no more, gets a very little battery bump. From 7.6kWH to 7.9kWH. It sits in the same space as before but, considering other auto makers like Renault have done the same but with much bigger capacity increases, like the new LEAF or the Zoe ZE40, at least we know the technology exists to do that. It’s an EPA range of 25 electric miles. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Hannah Barnes asks where the money from your energy bills goes. Do the energy companies have anything to hide and are customers are being ripped off? She visits Jane, an energy customer in Brighton, and finds her in a cold house waiting as long as she can to turn on her heating. Jane isnot alone - there are thousands like her who cannot afford to pay their bills. So why are they going up and are each of the different reasons given by the big six energy companies valid or are we paying too much.
