Chris Koch doesn't let limitations or obstacles stand in his way. Despite being born without arms and legs, Koch grew up like any other small-town kid — playing road hockey, causing mischief at school, and helping out on his family farm. Neither he or his family treated his disability like a tragedy, and instead used it to fuel his dreams. Today, Koch is a motivational speaker who inspires his audiences to continually challenge themselves and build the life they dream of. Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Koch was raised in the small farming and ranching community of Nanton, Alberta. Early on, he learned that he would not be raised with pity or sympathy. Sure, he had to do things a little differently and some tasks took him a little longer to complete than others, but he was determined to be just like the rest and was always treated just like the rest. After all, he still had a good head on his shoulders and with that, anything is possible. Koch loves sharing his story and spreading his message of, “If I Can…” An avid traveller, marathoner, and farmer, his presentation reflects his full life. Simply put, Koch says, if I can do what I've done so far in my life, what's stopping others from doing the same?     Chris Koch - If I Can TedX Talk Chris Koch - If I Can - Facebook

PART 1: Ain't no quotas here at Cancel Me, Baby. This is the honest conversation we deserve. Pop culture and advertisers are really proud of themselves for railing "representation" in our heads so much so that we've heard the word more than our own thoughts. But how do people on the other side of it actually feel? Namely, ones with disabilities? I'm joined by two badasses, who happen to be friends and Cancel Me, Baby fans, to find out. Chris Koch (@ifican.chriskoch) was born with partially developed limbs, is a Tedx and motivational speaker, and will happily screw with people who act weird around him. Caitlyn Pallas  (@caitlynpallas) is technically quadrapelegic, beat stage 3 lymphoma, and prefers the "JUST ASK, don't stare" approach when she's in a wheelchair. So I ask the questions you want to know answers to. Is "disability" even the right word? Are they put in some kind of box? Can people around them lighten up? And so much more. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/taylor-ferber/support

Early on, he learned that he would not be raised withpity or sympathy. Sure, he had to do things a little differently and some tasks took him a little longer to complete than others, but he was determined to be just like the rest and was always treated just like the rest. After all, he still had a good head on hisshoulders and with that, anything is possible.

People are our best assets, and leaders who understand this concept will aim to lead people effectively; however, you do not become an effective leader overnight, nor are the skills or traits inborn. Becoming an effective leader requires hard work, and it can be frustrating at times if you are clueless about where you're supposed to start. The good news is that there are areas of focus that you can begin honing in to inspire the people under you, motivating them to go above and beyond.  This week's podcast episode is what my guest, Chris Koch of BDR, talks about. We discuss the importance of communication and how to communicate better in a way that the receiver understands. Chris also talks about why one must be receptive to changes and desire to improve constantly. We also share our thoughts on attracting the right talent and how leaders should not be afraid to train their people, and a whole lot more.  If you are a struggling leader, this episode will guide you into the skills you need to hone to become effective in leading your people.   Discussion Points:  0:00 The Elevation Program   4:22 Overview of the episode  5:08 How the work landscape has shifted over the years  7:22 What communicating better means  9:22 Understanding someone's personality to communicate better  12:16 Normal face (how to respond when someone gives you bad news)  15:07 Addressing different mediums of communication on the technician front   17:28 Time spent on phones and productivity  18:58 Developing policies and making it a collaborative effort  23:16 Try to improve constantly. Be receptive to changes. 27:20 Check your ego as an owner or manager  27:58 How BDR helps businesses achieve what they want to achieve  30:16  Elevate one's self and elevate your team  34:08 Hire for attitude and aptitude  36:33 Change and pivot - start with one 39:30 The org chart  43:08 Business planning  46:35 Accountability  49:17 Don't be afraid to train your people  49:48 Employee engagement   About the Guest:  Chris Koch brings 25-years of HVAC industry experience to BDR's business coaching clientele. While Chris has focused primarily on the commercial service arena, he has a significant amount of residential HVAC and plumbing experience, including “mixed-use buildings” that blend commercial and residential markets. Chris started at the ground floor – literally – and worked his way up the ladder to VP of Service, earning a business degree along the way. The experience he gained across a spectrum of operational-level service, installation, and sales roles was the springboard for his success across various management roles.  Resources:  Join a global community of 6000+ trade professionals https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheSiteShed Tradie Web Guys ‘automation' - https://www.tradiewebguys.com.au/automation/ Tradie Web Guys Elevation Program - https://www.tradiewebguys.com.au/elevation/ Tradie Web Guys' Apply (qualification) page https://www.tradiewebguys.com.au/apply/ Visit Business Development Resources (BDR) https://www.bdrco.com/  Books mentioned in this episode:  Mythos by Stephen Fry https://www.amazon.com/Mythos-Stephen-Fry/dp/1452178917  Five Love Languages https://www.amazon.com/Love-Languages-Secret-that-Lasts/dp/080241270X  Personality Plus by Florence Littauer https://amzn.to/3w1iMuL  The 7-Power Contractor by Al Levi https://amzn.to/3dLkb26  Connect with me on LinkedIn. Imagine planning out your day, fully expecting to be home for dinner only to end up in a jail cell with a stranger. Having found yourself convicted of a crime. My guest on this episode doesn’t have to imagine that situation, as it’s exactly what happened to him. Chris was used to the high life, rubbing shoulders with US presidents, CIA operatives and the wealthy. He earned large sums of money doing what came naturally to him as one of Australia’s top 5 speakers. His success as a professional speaker allowed him to live the high life, fancy restaurants, beautiful homes, first class travel and accommodation wherever he went. But that all changed in June 2010. During this episode I chat with Chris about his experience in prison, he shares incredible insights on how you can build resilience in your own life along with ideas on how to build trusting relationships. We also discuss the “disease of greed” that inflicted him and continues to plague society as people continue risk everything in the search for unimaginable riches. Chris shares how he survived for seven and a half years in several high security prisons by using the same motivational skills and relationship building capabilities that had placed him at the highest level in the professional speaking industry. Chris’s encounters in prison are both inspirational and saddening yet you will notice how he was always able to look on the optimistic side of the challenges that arose, taking the “hit” as a “gift”.
