What is it about British summer holidays that brings out the absolute weirdest memories? Andrew Culture is joined by returning co-host and beard-stroking wordsmith Martin Whiskin for a full-tilt, memory-lane-meets-puke-stained-train episode about all things “Summer Holidays.”We kick off with threats from Grotbags, traumatising pantos, and a deep dive into the bizarre puppetry obsession of '80s kids TV. From Bob Carolgees and Spit the Dog to the musical trauma inflicted by Orville, it's a warped nostalgia trip with the distinct smell of Dettol.Expect riffs of the week that range from children's YouTube bangers to industrial J-pop-metal chaos. Martin finds beauty in Down By Law's one-minute face-punch punk, Therapy?'s surprise chart invasion, and the unlikely Shed Seven resurgence. Andrew counters with a romantic tale of vomit at the Steamboat pub, a Double Deckers TV theme tribute, and a Queens of the Stone Age song that's basically just a shopping list of narcotics. Also covered:Why Cliff Richard was in a bus with The ShadowsHow band advances don't workPunk shows in Welsh working men's clubsWhy you never want to eat a dry roll with one slice of iceberg lettuceThe fine art of projectile vomiting into jacket sleevesIf you've ever wanted a podcast episode that transitions seamlessly from 'Summer Holiday' by Cliff Richard to vomming on the tube while discussing Trash Theory's Therapy? documentary, this is it.Music, memories, mayhem. "We're all going on a summer holiday....no more workin' for a week or two!" Many of us are familiar with Cliff Richards classic holiday song, but what about 'The Holiday Hymn' from The Book of Psalms? Psalm 81 calls us to worship the LORD as our Creator & Redeemer, ultimately pointing us to Jesus!
Chart-topping bands, musicians and rappers are increasingly singing about God. Why? In this documentary episode Justin Brierley revisits the religious awakening of music stars such as Bob Dylan, Alice Cooper, Cliff Richard and U2 as veteran music journalist Steve Turner explains how faith influenced their music. Justin also speaks to TGC editor Brett McCracken about the current religious revival in rock and rap from musicians such as Stormzy, Mumford & Sons, Nick Cave and Coldplay. But there are pitfalls to being a celebrity music convert. Jon McCray (Whaddo You Meme), KD Ruslan and Nick Brewer share thoughts on the case of Kanye and the conflicted world of rap stars singing about faith. X-Factor contestant Talia Dean also shares her story of recently leaving the secular music industry after discovering something much bigger... God. Antony Rotunno From the "Glass Onion on John Lennon" podcast returns to review/discuss several 1966 singles/EP's and Tim Cooper talks about collecting Cliff Richard records and memorabilia.
Better (a month) late than never, we're celebrating the competition that made superstars of Cliff Richard, ABBA and, erm, Daz Sampson. Both the Eurovision Song Contest itself, and those month's film ESC: The Story of Fire Saga will probably baffle our US listener but it's a must-see for any fans of the contest.Filmed in Iceland and the UK, it's definitely within our remit despite starring Will Ferrell as the international cast balance him out and the European Broadcasting Union itself has blurry borders, incorporating Russia and Australia along with the more traditional European countries. Settle down for a large helping of (Swiss?) cheese and join us as we award Douze points to Fire Saga!
In this inspiring episode of Best in Fest, host Leslie speaks with first-time filmmaker Tamar Springer about her powerful documentary More Than Santa Baby — a heartfelt tribute to her father, legendary composer Philip Springer. Known worldwide for penning the holiday classic "Santa Baby," Philip's influence goes far beyond that single hit, with songs recorded by Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, and many more.Tamar shares how her background in social work evolved into an unexpected filmmaking journey, sparked by a pandemic-era epiphany and fueled by a deep love for her father's astonishing legacy. From rare archival footage to interviews with UK music icons like Cliff Richard and Mike Read, this conversation dives into the making of a three-act documentary, the magic of the Brill Building era, and the enduring power of passion projects — no matter your age.

The Grand Knockout Tournament (also known as It's a Royal Knockout) was a one-off charity event first shown on BBC1 on 19th June 1987, to an audience of 18 million gobsmacked viewers. The brainchild of the then 23 year old Prince Edward, the slapstick spectacle featured the Princess Royal and the Duke and Duchess of York captaining rival teams in a series of preposterous rounds involving celebrities including Rowan Atkinson, Tom Jones, Cliff Richard, John Travolta and Les Dawson. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly recall Fergie's feelings of shame, blame and betrayal; discover the extraordinary cast of characters gathered at this bizarre occasion; and explain why Meat Loaf and Prince Andrew did not see eye-to-eye… Further Reading: • ‘Remembering The TV Disaster That Was It's A Royal Knockout' (Grazia, 2020): https://graziadaily.co.uk/celebrity/news/royal-knockout-anne-edward-andrew/ • ‘It's a royal cock-up' (The Guardian, 2002): https://www.theguardian.com/media/2002/mar/05/themonarchy.broadcasting • ‘The Grand Knockout Tournament' (BBC, 1987): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwkv0-QlbZY This episode first aired in 2021 Love the show? Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 3ú lá de mí an Mheithimh, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1967 bhí an rialtas ullamh chun laghdú na fíneálacha I gcoinne na bhfeirmeoirí. I 1988 tháinig nuacht iontach amach I gcóir an tír – bhí laghdú sna rátaí úis agus bhí an easpórtáil ag dul ó neart go neart. I 1999 tháinig fógra ar ghuthán go raibh buama I dhá thí I nDurlas – ach tháinig sé amach go raibh sé rabhadh bréige. Dúirt fear le canúint ón Thuaidh go raibh buama I dhá thí agus bhí na daoine a raibh ina chónaí sna tithe bainteach le drugaí. I 2003 chuaigh Mary McAleese chuig Durlas. D'oscail sí an leabharlann nua ag Scoil Ailbhe agus ag an am bhí sí an chéad cheann stáit chun turas a thabhairt chuig an scoil. Sin Usher agus Will.I.Am le OMG – an t-amhrán is mó ar an lá seo I 2010. Ag lean ar aghaidh le nuacht cheoil ar an lá seo I 1965 shroich Bryan Adams uimhir a haon I Meiriceá lena hamhrán Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman agus d'fhan sé ann ar feadh cúig sheachtain. Bhí sé ón scannán Don Juan De Marco agus bhí sé a tríú huimhir a haon I Meiriceá agus shroich sé uimhir a ceathair sa Bhreatain. I 2002 bhí Paul McCartney, Sting, Elton John, Brian Wilson, Cliff Richard, Ozzy Osbourne, The Corrs, Will Young, Atomic Kitten agus S Club 7 ag an cheolchoirm iubhaile banríon ag Buckingham Palace I Londain. Agus ar deireadh breithlá daoine cáiliúla ar an lá seo rugadh Rafael Nadal sa Spáinn I 1986 agus rugadh amhránaí Kelly Jones sa Bhreatain Bheag ar an lá seo I 1974 agus seo chuid de amhrán. Beidh mé ar ais libh amárach le heagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo. Welcome back to another edition of Ar An Lá Seo on the 3rd of June, with me Lauren Ní Loingsigh 1967: the government was prepared to 'mitigate entirely' the outstanding fines against farmers. 1988: There was good news for the country - booming exports and a cut in interest rates. 1999 - A phone warning alleging that bombs were placed in two houses in Thurles, was a false alarm.A man with a Northern accent said that bombs had been placed in two named houses in Thurles. The houses were occupied by people involved in the drug trade the caller alleged. 2003 - THE President of Ireland, Mary McAleese visited Thurles. The president would officially open the new state-of-the-art library at Scoil Ailbhe . President McAleese would make history by being the first Head of State to visit the primary school. That was Usher and Will.I.Am with OMG – the biggest song on this day in 2010 Onto music news on this day In 1995 Bryan Adams started a five week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman' Taken from the film 'Don Juan De Marco' it became Adams third US solo No.1, a No.4 hit in the UK. 2002 Paul McCartney, Sting, Elton John, Brian Wilson, Cliff Richard, Ozzy Osbourne, The Corrs, Will Young, Atomic Kitten and S Club 7 all appeared at The Queen's Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace, London. And finally celebrity birthdays on this day – Rafael Nadal was born in Spain in 1986 and singer Kellt Jones was born in Wales on this day in 1974 and this is one of their songs. Fáilte ar ais chuig eagrán nua de Ar An Lá Seo ar an 3ú lá de mí an Mheithimh, liomsa Lauren Ní Loingsigh. I 1967 bhí an rialtas ullamh chun laghdú na fíneálacha I gcoinne na bhfeirmeoirí. I 1988 tháinig nuacht iontach amach I gcóir an tír – bhí laghdú sna rátaí úis agus bhí an easpórtáil ag dul ó neart go neart. I 1977 bhí ionadh ag an chomhdháil sa chontae mar go bhfuair Mrs McCarthy ainmniúchán in ionad Gerry Dooley. I 1988 chuaigh 17 duine óga in Inis as a gcrann cumhachta de bhuirgléireacht sa bhaile. 1977: the only surprise at the clare conventions was the nomination of mrs mc carthy who beat off the challenge of gerry dooley. 1988: seventeen ennis youths went on a rampage of burglaries in the town. I'll be back with you tomorrow with another edition of Ar An Lá Seo.
This time we watched Tomorrow, the Rat — Episode 4 from Series 1 of Doomwatch, first broadcast 2 March 1970 and written by Terence Dudley. That's four years before James Herbert published The Rats (which we covered in episode 4). It's highly likely he was inspired by this vintage BBC sci-fi thriller—pen in hand, watching Doomwatch unfold.Doomwatch was a vintage BBC science fiction series that aired from 1970 to 1972. A prime example of British sci-fi, it followed a government scientific agency led by Dr Spencer Quist (John Paul) investigating futuristic environmental and technological threats. Think of it as classic BBC sci-fi with serious Black Mirror energy. The show was created by Doctor Who masterminds Gerry Davis and Kit Pedler—the very same duo who invented the Cybermen. Davis had been a Doctor Who story editor; Pedler served as scientific adviser. Their fascination with the dangers of science run amok became the foundation of Doomwatch, this cult BBC science fiction drama.Series 1 and 2 each had thirteen episodes; Series 3 had twelve (though one, Sex and Violence, was never broadcast). The BBC got cold feet, possibly due to real execution footage and unflattering portrayals of public figures like Mary Whitehouse and Cliff Richard. As with far too much vintage BBC content, parts of Doomwatch are missing—wiped or taped over. At its peak, the show pulled in over 13 million viewers, cementing its place in classic British sci-fi history.Dr Quist was a Nobel-winning physicist haunted by his involvement in the Manhattan Project. (Yes, he appears in Oppenheimer.) John Paul, who played him, was a familiar face on British television: I, Claudius, Triangle, The Avengers, The New Avengers—proper BBC veteran.Toby Wren, played by Robert Powell (who we talked about in episode 46, The Survivor), was a key figure in Series 1. He met a legendary end in the finale, Survival Code. Powell asked to go out with a bang—literally. The BBC received more letters about his on-screen death than any issue since World War II.This episode, Tomorrow, the Rat, was written by Terence Dudley—then the producer of Doomwatch. Dudley directed three episodes and went on to work extensively in Doctor Who, including directing Meglos (1980), and writing Four to Doomsday, Black Orchid, and The King's Demons. He also wrote Target novelisations and K-9 and Company. Classic vintage BBC sci-fi pedigree.Simon Oates plays Dr John Ridge—you may remember him from Beasts (The Dummy episode, which we reviewed in 44a). He also played Steed in the stage version of The Avengers.Penelope Lee appears as Dr Mary Bryant. She once auditioned to play Barbara, the Doctor's original companion. She later voiced Lyn Driver in The Plague Dogs (a British animation not for the faint-hearted) and a computer in Doctor Who: Revelation of the Daleks. She also featured in Richard Donner's Superman as the Ninth Elder. Peak British sci-fi credentials.Hamilton Dyce turns up as the Minister. You might recognise him as Major General Scobie in Doctor Who: Spearhead from Space—another vintage BBC sci-fi staple. And no, before you ask, none of this cast ever turned up in Boon.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. On this week's episode of Local Legends, Martin is joined by author, folklorist, musician and songwriter Paul Weatherhead, whose book Weird Calderdale is a must-have for fans of Yorkshire folklore!Paul is a native of the Calder Valley in Yorkshire, and was brought up in Hebden Bridge. After finishing school and his BA, Paul spent several years teaching in Greece, Moscow and Northern Siberia before he returned to Calder Valley in the late 1990s. With a longstanding obsession with the weird history of the area he grew up, he wrote Weird Calderdale, the first edition of which was released in 2003 which went on to become a local best-seller.After earning his MA, Paul's writing then began to be published in various magazines and journals, including Psychology Today, The Skeptic, Northern Life and Psychedelic Scene. He frequently writes on topics including mass hysteria, delusions, weird history and folklore. And on the mass hysteria and delusions front, his latest book, released in September 2024, is called Social Panics and Phantom Attackers – A Study of Imaginary Assailants, which was co-written with renowned sociologist Robert Bartholomew: a mega-interesting topic which we discuss in some depth during this episode. As well as his research interests, Paul is a musician and songwriter, playing electric mandolin with cult folk rock band The Ukrainians for many years, as well as composing solo work consisting of comic folk horror songs inspired by 60s psychedelia, 80s video nasties and the Hebden Bridge Times. All of which makes Paul the ideal person to speak to about Yorkshire, and about folk music, too. To learn more about Paul and his work and books, and to read his excellent blog, do be sure to visit his website at paulweatherhead.com.Otherwise, settle in for a chat which engages with topics including local witches battling Cliff Richard, Yorkshire's zombies, the Halifax guillotine, local anti-hero Tom Bell, unidentified flying objects, and so much more! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. What's up, dudes? Remember Band Aid and its mega-hit “Do They Know It's Christmas?” It spun off countless relief efforts, including Carol Aid 1985. Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas introduced me to this concert, and he's here to talk about its MTV and Music Box broadcast!Carol Aid was a famine relief concert held at the club Heaven in London. MTV and Music Box aired a cut down version, leaving out several acts. In fact, the likes of Magnum, Captain Sensible, and Miquel Brown (to name a few) were cut for time. It's quite unbelievable.Cliff Richard kicked off the broadcast version with “Another Christmas Day,” while John Parr sang “Once in Royal David's City.” Meanwhile, the Fixx pressed for donations and sang “Peace On Earth,” a hidden track from their following album. Subsequently, the event ended with the entire roster singing “Do They Know It's Christmas?” rather heartily.Chris De Burgh? Check. Anita Harris? She was there. Toto Coelo and the Flying Pickets? Got them too, though we have no idea what they sang. So grab your oversized checks, put on your red beret, and jam out to “Carols from Heaven” and Carol Aid 1985!Sounds of ChristmasFB: @SOCMusicTwitter: @SOCMusicIG: @socmusicGive us a buzz! Merry Christmas! It's a packed show, and we start off with a not particularly good version of A Christmas Carol from 2001. It's animated and has the voices of Kate Winslet, Simon Callow and Nic Cage as Jacon Marley. You can watch here, or not, it's your life:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptEiotEFUdk&t=4116sNext up is A Story of Shame from our listener Nettie Tebeau. Then it's our yearly chat with Scott Newman of Tinsel Tunes. This time we look at the King of Christmas (at least in the UK), Cliff Richard. He's been part of the Christmas number 1 four times and he's also released a whole bunch of other Christmas songs (and 2 albums). We talk about 4 of his songs and you can check them out here:Cliff Richard & The Shadows - I Love Youhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNRDiVcTrPISaviours Dayhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTI8CWSiZ40Whenever God Shines His Lighthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--XE4CYGRSY21st Century Christmashttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2ZpCKiA7W8Check out Scott's Podcasts.Tinsel Tunes:https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/tinseltunesChristmas Morninng:https://christmasmorningpodcast.com/Last episode we talked about The Unofficial Elf Cookbook by Bryton Taylor, and this episode we doing the draw to see who the lucky winner is. Jakko Jakszyk in conversation with David Eastaugh https://kingmakerpublishing.com/jakko-m-jakszyk/ Jakko M. Jaksyzk is an award-winning, world-renowned musician, best known for having been a member of Level 42, but most recently, for the past 13 years, lead singer and guitarist with progressive rock founding fathers King Crimson. Who's The Boy With The Lovely Hair? is, at first glance, a traditional rock'n'roll memoir, charting Jakko's long and varied musical career, packed with eyebrow-raising and hilarious anecdotes about his encounters with everyone from Michael Jackson to Kate Bush and Gene Simmons, Uri Geller, Cliff Richard and the Dali Lama. Dig a little deeper, however, and it soon becomes clear that this autobiography is much more than that. Who's The Boy With The Lovely Hair? is an almanac of entertaining tales from the mid-20th century rock'n'roll, theatre and alternative comedy trenches, all told with great wit and charm. This is a book about origins, identity and who we become. It tells the story of an abandoned child who became lost in dreams of becoming a musician and who, with determination, talent and a slice of luck, ended up working with their childhood heroes.
Listener suggestions are rated on the Yachtski Scale, with songs by the Wilson Brothers, Barbara Streisand, and Cliff Richard.
What's up, dudes? They say the sequels are never as good as the first. I think The Empire Strikes Back proves them wrong…but Band Aid II doesn't. I have music journalist Alex Rawls from The Twelve Songs of Christmas and My Spilt Milk with me to talk all about the second version of the charity song done in 1989! Spoilers: it's not as good as the first, but it's still fun!On Friday, December 1, 1989, Bob Geldof called Pete Waterman to ask if he would consider producing a new version of “Do They Know It's Christmas.” Waterman was part of The Hit Factory, a production team made up of himself, Mike Stock, and Matt Aiken. They were known for hi-NRG or Eurobeat style, with tempos usually somewhere between 102-140bpm, four-to-the-floor kick drums, staccato hi-hat, and bass lines frequently looped with fast eighth or sixteenth notes doubled at the octave. In fact, they produced 13 UK #1 singles and 3 US #1s. Waterman even postponed his wedding and rallied several artists together.Subsequently, on Sunday, December 3rd, the assembled artists recorded at PWL Studios in South London. Bob Geldof and family were present. On Tuesday, December 5th, the updated version was played for the first time on London's Capital Radio, 95.8 Capital FM. Advanced sales reached 500,000 copies, and the single was officially released on December 11th. It spent 3 weeks at #1, though Band Aid's original hit spent 5 weeks at #1 and sold over 2 million copies (which was approximately $24million in sales).Kylie Minogue? Check. Bros? Yep. Cliff Richard? A little out of place, but he was definitely there! So grab your denim jacket, put on an uptempo kick drum backing track, and jam out to this episode all about Band Aid II!The 12 Songs of ChristmasFB: @TwelveSongsofChristmasTwitter: @MySpiltMilk IG: @myspiltmilkGive us a buzz!
