Leo Sayer is an internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter, whose success has spanned the past 6 decades, as a recording artist as well as a captivating live performer. He is best known for his 1978 hit “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing”, which earned him a Grammy Award for R&B Song of the Year. His songs have been sung by other notable artists, including Cliff Richard, Roger Daltrey, and Three Dog Night. With dozens of hit singles and 18 studio albums, Leo has sold millions of records to date, has headlined concerts across the globe, and has played in some of the most iconic venues in the world. Leo began his career in the United Kingdom, but for a long time has proudly called Australia home. In this episode, Sayer joins me for an incredible chat, revisiting some of the standout stories from his life in stardom; explaining how his theatrical persona of pierrot helped him face the stage; and despairing that one of the biggest barriers facing musicians and artists (especially those starting out) is often money. He shares some of the lessons he has learnt along the way during his many years of (ongoing) success; his enthusiastic encouragement for aspiring artists to find their skill; how he continues to have inspiration and passion for this industry which he so clearly loves being part of; and why, no matter his age, he'll continue to feel like dancing.

70 ans !

Well well well, Mr Hucknall, we meet again. Simply Red's 1995 album 'Life' was a big seller and had a massive number one single on it but kind of feels like it doesn't get remembered much when people look back. We certainly didn't know anything much about it going into this episode and to be honest we kind of wish it had stayed that way. But we do have probably the biggest albums and singles sections that we've ever done, loads of bands that we get to talk about like Smashing Pumpkins, Incubus, Anthrax and obviously Cliff Richard. Plus we get to add a song to our "much-loved" Give Me Some Reggae! playlist where we add terrible reggae songs from albums we're covering that are in no way reggae albums which is always the sign of a good episode. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating or comment over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist (which contains ALL of the songs we talk about on this one) and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. And if you want to donate to our PayPal account for the price of a pint or a cup of coffee that is always appreciated as well obviously. Cheers!

How can one of the most successful bands in British history become almost invisible? In this episode, I explore the story of The Shadows, a group whose distinctive sound helped shape British popular music long before the arrival of the Merseybeat era. For a time, their influence seemed to be everywhere: in guitar shops, on the radio, and in the playing of countless young musicians trying to recreate those precise instrumental melodies and echoing tones. In this episode, I look at the group's sound, style and cultural significance, and consider why a band once central to British pop history now feels strangely overlooked. From instrumental hits to their close association with Cliff Richard, The Shadows occupy a fascinating place in the story of post-war British music. We also reflect on the enduring appeal of the instrumental record, and the quiet power of melody, restraint and atmosphere. In this episode I am in discussion with Keith Cheshire.https://www.facebook.com/share/1F15mx4ea3/https://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. En el día en que habría cumplido 95 años celebramos el legado de este prolífico autor, poseedor de más de 1000 canciones con su firma. Escribió clásicos eternos para Elvis o Jerry Lee Lewis. This week I'm joined by IRA ROBBINS (Editor & Co-Founder of TROUSER PRESS magazine) as we end the year with the 1959 U.K. cult classic EXPRESSO BONGO!!!We discuss how Ira's influential magazine was started on a whim, and how as outsiders they wanted a different approach to rock journalism, how they got a long-form interview with Jimmy Page, how the magazine made me feel smarter by reading it, the wild highs and lows of publishing Trouser Press, making mistakes in journalism, writing a letter to Pete Townshend and the reply that came back in the mail, how 70s rock journalism still held power in the culture of the time, the Devo/William Burroughs interview, how they got difficult interviewees to open up to their writers, how the magazine become an obligation rather than an opportunity over the years, the hardcore punk movement, how and why the magazine stopped publication, MTV's influence on music journalism, Laurence Harvey's strange and powerful performance in Expresso Bongo, how young Cliff Richard was in this film, the incredible opening title sequence of the film, how the film pushes the cultural boundaries for young people in the late 50s, the British kitchen-sink drama movement, how the film was originally a West End musical and the differences between the two, how sleazy and risqué the film is for its time, The Shadows, how exploitative the British rock management world was, the threat of the 50s teenager, the alternate ending of the film and so much more.So let's spin in circles while shattering our espresso cups on the ground on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!!TROUSER PRESS BOOKS (you can read the entire Trouser Press Magazine run in their archives!):trouserpressbooks.comREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. In this episode of the LEGENDS: Podcast by All Day Vinyl interviews legendary songwriter Philip Springer, the composer of the classic Christmas song "Santa Baby" for Eartha Kitt in 1953. Springer recounts his start as a young pianist, his time in the Brill Building, and his early career in the Army playing with Tony Bennett for fellow GIs. He tells the story of writing "Santa Baby" with Joan Javits, the song's controversial reception, and how its popularity resurged after Madonna's 1987 cover. The conversation also covers Springer's work with major artists like Eartha Kitt, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and Cliff Richard, his ability to adapt during the rock revolution, and later pioneering work in electronic music and synthesizers, including teaching at UCLA. Springer's daughter Tamara discusses her new documentary "More Than Santa Baby," discoveries in his catalog, and the film's themes of perseverance, resilience, and late-life creativity. This episode offers a rich overview of eight decades of music history through one songwriter's remarkable career — from Tin Pan Alley and pop standards to rock, film scores, and electronic innovation.

Mistletoe and Wine became the UK's Christmas Number One on 18th December, 1988; the first of three singles Cliff Richard would take to the top of the festive charts. What makes its triumph so curious is that the song began life as a sardonic showtune written in 1976 for a small musical based on The Little Match Girl by Hans Christian Andersen. Originally, it underscored a scene in which the impoverished heroine is literally kicked into the snow by the heartless middle classes. Its journey to yuletide staple began with Twiggy's 1987 performance in an ITV adaptation of the musical. By then the number had morphed into a lively pub singalong, catching the ear of Terry Britten, long-time Cliff collaborator, who passed the tune along.  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly discover why Leslie Stewart, one of the songwriters, disliked Cliff's canonical version; explain why British ears appreciate the song with simultaneous earnestness and irony; and reveal what links this festive classic to the iconic theme tune for ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?'... Welcome to the 21st Century!Or did you call it Y2K? And if so, can I ask WHY?Yes, pop fans and curators of variously compiled pop, we had survived the End of the Century. The millennium bug turned out to be nowhere near as life threatening as as we were told. No planes fell from the sky, no computer meltdowns and no return to the dark ages overnight. In fact the most terrifying thing about December 31st 1999 was the turgid TV schedules as we watched the Royal Family trying to join hands with Tony Blair, or worse - the cost of drinks and cloakroom queues in the nightclubs. So, as we entered the third millennium - with Cliff Richard still intact and fresh from his (nearly 4th) Festive chart topping prayer - how was the pop world faring? Despite the seeming lack of guitars (SO NINETIES), the charts were bursting with new, fresh and mostly young shiny talent! And Bryan Adams. And Tom Jones. And John Lennon.BUT, apart from these ‘legacy artistes', pop was back, Back, BACK. NOW 45 was here!Scandinavian superstar producers were serving up Britney, Backstreet, Aqua and, er, Lene for our delectation. Steps, S Club and Atomic Kitten were waving the Brit flag in their crop tops and combats (even H). Solo Spice was blossoming quicker than the viewing figures for Castaway (not hard) with Mel C and Geri leading the way. RnB and Garage was freshening up the charts. And of course EVERYONE was queuing in the airport terminals for another summer of dance and there is plenty of that on these two shiny discs. Bu t there is SO much more to this dazzling 45th volume of variously compiled pop. And taking us through it is GENUINE CONTRIBUTOR to the album - electronic producer and musician John Matthews aka Ricardo Autobahn aka the Cuban Boys! Yes, the Hamster Dance song as featured here!Join us as we climb aboard our futuristic Y2K hoverboards and not only revisit NOW45, discover the full story of how The Cuban Boys topped John Peel's Festive Top 50 and almost toppled the might Cliff and Westlife in the final Official Chart of the millennium. All from their bedroom. You couldn't make it up!All of this and Daphne and Celeste! Ooh (and quite literally) Stick You! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In 2020, episode 23 of The Cycling Europe Podcast featured a chat with cyclist and David Bowie fan James Briggs. Inspired by the lyric of his musical hero, David Bowie, James set off on a cycling odyssey from Ibiza... to the Norfolk Broads. At the time he was writing a book about his music-inspired journey and now, five years later, it has just been published. According to the blurb, "Criss-crossing Europe, he visited French chateaux where Bowie recorded, Spanish Olympic stadiums he played, former communist states where his music was banned, and the Berlin Wall he helped topple - all while navigating angry Soviet ballerinas, suspicious village mayors, and an irate Cliff Richard fan." In this episode of the podcast we listen to what James had to say back in 2020 and catch up with him again about what happened next. We also hear from Rob Ainsley who in episode 23 provided his own suggestions for lyric-themed cycling adventures. Will James find inspiration in any of Rob's ideas for his next long-distance cycle?

Burt Reynolds, Dick Dale, Cliff Richard, and fuck me if it isn't Hank Marvin with his red Fender Stratocaster! We talk about surfin' USA, surfin' UK, and surfin' SK. Surfin' UK is problematic because you have to fight the frigid north sea, a frankly terrifying volume of wee beige jobbies bobbing along beside you, and then the disdain and ridicule of your friends! Surfin' SK also has its challenges; namely the sheer amount of time it would take one to get to the damn beach with your surf board!!! This is the last of our mini Kofi run here while Kev is in England. As long as the plane doesn't go down and he doesn't enjoy his three weak pod break too much, we'll be back next week with our usual silliness for ya!If Kev were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Wonderful Land", or possibly, "Definitely not Regina"The eighteenth installment in this podcast-within-a-podcast covers a song submitted by our pal Al Dudeney; the slinky 50's instrumental rocker, "Wonderful Land" by The Shadows! Chart-topping bands, musicians and rappers are increasingly singing about God. Why? In this documentary episode Justin Brierley revisits the religious awakening of music stars such as Bob Dylan, Alice Cooper, Cliff Richard and U2 as veteran music journalist Steve Turner explains how faith influenced their music. Justin also speaks to TGC editor Brett McCracken about the current religious revival in rock and rap from musicians such as Stormzy, Mumford & Sons, Nick Cave and Coldplay. But there are pitfalls to being a celebrity music convert. Jon McCray (Whaddo You Meme), KD Ruslan and Nick Brewer share thoughts on the case of Kanye and the conflicted world of rap stars singing about faith. X-Factor contestant Talia Dean also shares her story of recently leaving the secular music industry after discovering something much bigger... God. In this inspiring episode of Best in Fest, host Leslie speaks with first-time filmmaker Tamar Springer about her powerful documentary More Than Santa Baby — a heartfelt tribute to her father, legendary composer Philip Springer. Known worldwide for penning the holiday classic "Santa Baby," Philip's influence goes far beyond that single hit, with songs recorded by Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, and many more.Tamar shares how her background in social work evolved into an unexpected filmmaking journey, sparked by a pandemic-era epiphany and fueled by a deep love for her father's astonishing legacy. From rare archival footage to interviews with UK music icons like Cliff Richard and Mike Read, this conversation dives into the making of a three-act documentary, the magic of the Brill Building era, and the enduring power of passion projects — no matter your age.

The Grand Knockout Tournament (also known as It's a Royal Knockout) was a one-off charity event first shown on BBC1 on 19th June 1987, to an audience of 18 million gobsmacked viewers.  The brainchild of the then 23 year old Prince Edward, the slapstick spectacle featured the Princess Royal and the Duke and Duchess of York captaining rival teams in a series of preposterous rounds involving celebrities including Rowan Atkinson, Tom Jones, Cliff Richard, John Travolta and Les Dawson. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly recall Fergie's feelings of shame, blame and betrayal; discover the extraordinary cast of characters gathered at this bizarre occasion; and explain why Meat Loaf and Prince Andrew did not see eye-to-eye… Further Reading: • ‘Remembering The TV Disaster That Was It's A Royal Knockout' (Grazia, 2020): https://graziadaily.co.uk/celebrity/news/royal-knockout-anne-edward-andrew/ • ‘It's a royal cock-up' (The Guardian, 2002): https://www.theguardian.com/media/2002/mar/05/themonarchy.broadcasting • ‘The Grand Knockout Tournament' (BBC, 1987): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwkv0-QlbZY This episode first aired in 2021 Love the show?
