Hello fellow B-Listers!Welcome to The B-Critics Podcast with Elizabeth Arnold and Courtney Thompson. This week The B-Critics bring on guest critic Allison Jalapeno to discuss the movie 13 Going on 30. We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but we agree with Jenna, love IS a battlefield. Especially for a 13-year-old trying to fit into a 30-year-old's world. Watching this 2004 rom-com as almost 30-year-olds gave the group a very different take vs the ideas they had as teens. The soundtrack, casting, and cameos add so much value to the movie, that you might just forget that 30-year-old Jenna Rink is a meanie or that her slumber party with the apartment building 13-year-olds was slightly inappropriate. Young Jenna got everything she wanted; she WAS 30, she was DEFINITELY flirty, and her professional life was THRIVING. But could she have gotten it all and NOT ruined other peoples' lives? I am thrilled to once again welcome everyone's favorite co-host Courtney Thompson! I LOVE sitting down and chatting with Courtney; she is a fountain of wisdom and has lived out everything I teach when it comes to Mental Training - on the BIGGEST NATIONAL stages. Courtney is a 2-time Olympic medalist with a professional resume that goes on for miles. She's also an advocate for mental training, a natural teacher, and she credits mindset work for a lot of her success, on and off the court. I am so excited to announce that Courtney has agreed to join me as a regular co-host on this podcast. That's right, you'll be seeing a lot more of her here in 2023! Today, Courtney and I are asking the question: “How can we allow things to be SIMPLE?” As high achievers, we take a lot of pride in working hard. For many of us, it's our comfort zone; It makes us feel good to work hard. And, don't get me wrong, there is a lot of pride to be had in working long hours, training hard, hustling. After all, as Courtney puts it, “If you've never been burnt out, or trained too hard, or crossed that line, are you actually pushing yourself?” But oftentimes we take it too far. The problem comes when we become so accustomed to working hard that we make things harder than they need to be. In today's episode, Courtney and I talk about the “dark side” of working hard. We talk about: What it means to “allow” things to be easy How self-sabotage masquerades as hustle Why the thing you SHOULD be doing is often the thing you avoid the most. From Courtney's experience in setting up her new business to my new-and-improved approach to family laundry, this concept is so applicable to everyone in so many different parts of life. In this episode, both Courtney and I have real breakthroughs, and we're confident that you will too. Let's dive in! When I locked down an interview with Courtney Thompson, I might as well have taken home the gold. Not only is Courtney a 2-time Olympic medalist with a professional resume that goes on for miles, Courtney is an advocate for mental training, and credits mindset work for a lot of her success, on and off the court. A champion on multiple levels, Courtney is living proof of the power of mental training, and has dedicated her life to giving back to the sports world and making real, meaningful change in her athletes. She's a fountain of wisdom and a total badass. In this episode, Courtney talks vulnerably about human things like self-doubt and imperfection, even at the elite level. She talks about how she cultivates confidence and inner wisdom, and shares her experience coaching a new generation of college athletes at Stanford University. She ends the episode with an actionable mental training nugget: The exact mental exercise she practices to help her let go of the uncontrollables. It's not every day you get to be coached by an Olympian. Through stories of how she practiced mental training before she even knew what it was, to a comical anecdote about getting the yips in front of her athletes, Courtney is equal parts entertaining and inspirational. From start to finish, my interview with THE Courtney Thompson was an absolute delight. And I can say with confidence that there's something in this episode for everyone. Let's dive in! Here's a glance at this episode: [0:00] Lindsey introduces her first guest on the podcast, two-time Olympian, Courtney Thompson! [4:06] When Courtney joined the Olympic team, she was taught, “There are 3 things you can train as a human, your body, your craft, and your mind.” [6:50] Although the benefits of mental training reverberate through your whole life, you still have to train and retrain your mind in every context; in and out of sports. [9:06] Before she learned mental training, Courtney often used daily habits and superstition to try to recreate the mental magic she felt on the days when everything just flowed. [13:01] Why responding positively to failure doesn't make you a worse athlete, it makes you a better one, according to Courtney. [14:46] Courtney describes her ‘aha moment' when she decided to change what she was doing and start training her mind. [17:51] What's an Olympian's mental training routine like? Courtney shares the details; now, and back when she was a competitive athlete. [20:09] Courtney shares the very mental training exercise she practiced as a pro athlete to help her let go of the un-controllables before she stepped on the court. [26:22] Why front-loading mental skills is a game-changer because you can't always “think your way out of” your fight or flight response. [30:09] Courtney shares the way she now approaches in-the-moment mental training as a coach with her athletes. [33:43] Lindsey asks, “How do you prepare yourself to be successful?” Courtney responds with a discussion about her relationship with meditation and the inner wisdom it cultivates. [36:51] Courtney shares the hard-hitting questions she asks her athletes to help them be more aware of their internal thoughts, self-talk, and mindset. [40:56] We are all in the pursuit of being our best, and mindset work is a continual practice. Part of being a coach is going through feelings of pressure, failure, resistance, and self-doubt; that part never goes away. [48:48] Why is it important to be vulnerable as a coach? It takes a lot of confidence to admit that we're scared, but there's not an athlete in the world that hasn't felt that way. [51:06] Courtney shares the ONE THING she would tell someone who was just starting their mental training journey. [54:31] Lindsey and Courtney wrap up the episode by discussing how Courtney hopes to grow her mindset in 2022, including one (semi-surprising) mindfulness practice rooted in buddhism. Unsung History
Phrenology & Crime in 19th Century America

Unsung History

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 30, 2021 43:07

In Nineteenth Century America there was a strong reformist push to know and improve the self. One key tactic Americans used to learn more about themselves was phrenological readings. They would pay practical phrenologists, like Orson Squire Fowler and his younger brother, Lorenzo Niles Fowler for readings of their skulls or their children's skulls.  In Lorenzo Fowler's reading of Emily Sawyer, he concluded a thirteen-page analysis by saying: “Cultivate as much as you can the organs marked smallest in your Chart + properly guide and exercise the stronger ones + thus produce a harmony of mental and physical action.” By using the phrenological readings of themselves or their children, Nineteenth Century Americans could apply the advice to become the best version of themselves. Practical phrenologists weren't interested only in reform of the self, but in larger societal reform as well. For practical phrenologists, prisons were the site of both research and reform; they argued for the elimination of capital punishment and the reform of prisons to include re-education instead of punishment.  Despite the reform impulse of phrenologists, phrenology was also used as a scientific reason to justify racism and gender stereotyping. American phrenologists were sympathetic to liberal causes including the antislavery movement, even while claiming the superiority of the European brain. By the early 20th century phrenology had been largely discredited in the public, but some of the concepts of phrenology, including propensities and physical localization in the brain of different characteristics have persisted. In this episode, Kelly briefly tells the story of phrenology in 19th Century America and interviews Courtney Thompson, Assistant Professor of History at Mississippi State University, and author of the February 2021 book, An Organ of Murder: Crime, Violence, and Phrenology in Nineteenth-Century America. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. Sciences Of The Mind with Courtney Thompson and Alicia Puglionesi

Historical Perspectives on STEM

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 17, 2021 67:43

Held in partnership with the American Philosophical Society, this discussion brings together historians Courtney Thompson and Alicia Puglionesi to discuss the fascinating world of the mind sciences in the United States in the 19th and early 20th centuries. During this time period, the human mind captured the imagination of the American public. Efforts to reveal the subconscious and to understand mental physiology inspired the creation of new technologies, modes of experimentation, and collaborations that aspired to make visible the inner workings of the brain. These developments had a profound impact on the production of scientific and medical expertise that continues to influence conceptions of race, gender, and mental illness in the present. Dr. Thompson focuses on the history of phrenology, exploring its connection to popular and elite theories of criminality. As she explains both in her presentation and in her book An Organ of Murder: Crime, Violence, and Phrenology in Nineteenth-Century America, phrenology constructed scientific ways of identifying, understanding, and analyzing criminals and their actions - ways which often recruited and justified folk notions and stereotypes of what criminals looked like and how they acted. Dr. Puglionesi recounts how and why psychologists and others interested in the mind investigated seances, clairvoyance, and telepathy in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although some researchers were interested in debunking frauds and con artists, most were interested in reconciling the mind sciences with the supernormal. Dr. Puglionesi's book, Common Phantoms: An American History of Psychic Science, tells this history and highlights the ways in which psychical research troubled the boundaries of science and its relationship to democracy and popular ways of experiencing the world. This weeks episode features all time great Husky Courtney Thompson. Courtney is a World Champion, Olympic Silver and Bronze medalist. An NCAA National Champion and 3x First team all American. Court has always had a chip on her shoulder and her ability to compete and make the people around her better is what makes her quite possibly the most contagious personality to ever set foot in the American Sports Center. Courtney walks us through her volleyball journey starting with strongly disliking the game at the ripe age of 12, attempting to watch her first volleyball match ever and having it rained out, to State Champion at Kentlake High School, going in to the University of Washington a nervous wreck, being a disaster the first two years and winning a ring. She also touches on the cultures of both of the Olympic quads she played in and how vastly different they were and the pro’s and con’s to both of them. Enjoy!

If you haven’t heard of Outstanding before, it’s an LGBTQI writing competition run by Robert Tait, Gail Hewison of Feminist Bookshop fame, and Teresa Savage, who among many accomplishments, is one of my mothers. So, I selected Courtney’s piece to be performed from loads of entries to the competition and here she is. Courtney is a creative writing student and chronic procrastinator at the University of New South Wales originally from rural NSW. Queerstories is an LGBTQI+ storytelling night programmed by Maeve Marsden, with regular events around Australia. For Queerstories event dates, visit www.maevemarsden.com, and follow Queerstories on Facebook. The Queerstories book is published by Hachette Australia, and can be purchased from your favourite independent bookseller or on Booktopia. Welcome to this mini-pod episode featuring my friend and colleague Courtney Thompson. Courtney shared a nursing story that I feel requires a warning. This story contains ADULT THEMES and should not be listened to at work or with children present. Nursing stories are not always kid friendly and I want to be clear that I would not let my own children listen to this story due to the mature content. Fair warning. Happy Nurses Week! We had a couple more mini-pod episodes that we didn't release during nursing week, so here is a bonus treat! Listen to the other great min-pod episodes for Nurses Week on YouTube, iTunes, Soundcloud or anywhere podcasts are found. Please comment your questions for upcoming podcasts! Nurses chatting about everything nursing and the occasional Harry Potter. Kent, Washington’s Courtney Thompson led the University of Washington volleyball team to its first National Championship in 2005 and has since won a silver medal with the 2012 US Olympic team, bronze in 2016, and gold in the 2014 FIVB World Championship with her Brazilian club team. Courtney illuminates for us the mental tools that determine the razor thin line between a ‘competitor’ and a ‘Champion’.
