“Most therapists and coaches suck.” That's how licensed psychotherapist and mental performance coach Vincent Infante opens this powerful episode of Sex Afflictions & Porn Addictions. In this no-holds-barred conversation with Craig Perra, founder of The Mindful Habit, you'll hear two men who've been through hell, done the work, and now help others navigate out of the darkness—especially men drowning in shame, addiction, and dopamine-fueled distractions.
In this unique dual podcast episode, I, Jodie Stevens and Craig Perra interview each other! We dive deep into our different—but strikingly similar—addiction stories. I share my journey through alcoholism and codependency, while Craig, founder of TheMindfulHabit.com, opens up about his recovery from sex, porn, and digital addiction. Together, we explore how all addictions—regardless of the substance or behavior—often stem from the same emotional roots: shame, fear, disconnection, and trauma. With raw honesty, humor, and heart, we unpack our stories and recovery journeys to show how healing is possible, and why connection, not perfection, is the real goal. Craig Perra is a world-renowned coach who helps people break free from sex, porn, and digital addictions. A former addict himself, Craig hit rock bottom over a decade ago—losing his job and nearly losing his family. That crisis became the catalyst for something powerful: The Mindful Habit® System—a alternative to traditional recovery programs. His work has been featured on The Steve Harvey Show, A&E's Digital Addiction, The Katie Couric Show, Good Day Sacramento, and more.
If you've ever promised yourself "never again"—only to fall back into the same compulsive patterns—this episode is for you.In this raw and powerful lesson, Craig Perra, founder of The Mindful Habit System, exposes why the traditional all-or-nothing, abstinence-only model for treating sex and porn addiction keeps men stuck in shame and failure.Drawing on the powerful case study of a client named Don, Craig unpacks the psychological cost of using sex to regulate fear, anxiety, and trauma since childhood—and why the key to lasting freedom lies in setting realistic, attainable goals rooted in science, not shame. You'll learn:Why most men relapse in abstinence-only programsHow to separate porn from masturbation as a first harm-reduction stepWhy frequency, time, and severity must be tracked to build healthy sexualityHow to break the perfection/failure cycle and build a culture of successWhether you're deep in the struggle or supporting a loved one, this episode offers hope, direction, and a radically honest alternative to shame-based recovery.
In this short 9 minute episode, Craig Perra, the founder of the Mindful Habit System, explores 'what causes porn addiction' and offers insights into its biological, psychological, cultural, and behavioral roots. Drawing from over a decade of experience, Craig discusses how men are trained to use porn as a coping mechanism for unmet needs, poor coping strategies, low self-esteem, shame, and secrets. He argues that porn addiction stems from repetitive patterns and conditioned responses formed early in life and emphasizes the importance of retraining the brain to create and sustain healthy sexuality.Craig sheds light on the underlying mental health issues often linked to porn addiction and stresses the need for holistic treatment beyond traditional approaches. How do you stop porn addiction—for good? Most men never stop their porn addiction, and it's not because they're weak. It's because they're using outdated tools to fight a deeply wired, incredibly difficult problem. In this video, Craig Perra—world-renowned coach and founder of The Mindful Habit System—shares the 5 essential steps that have helped thousands of men overcome porn addiction and transform their lives.
You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. That quote from Atomic Habits by James Clear changed my life—and in this episode, I'm going to show you why it needs to change yours. If you're struggling with sex and porn addiction, or supporting someone who is, you're likely overwhelmed, stuck, and maybe even hopeless. You've tried therapy. Support groups. Willpower. White-knuckling it.But here's the truth… ➡️ Sex and porn addiction isn't a “bad habit.” It's a deeply entrenched coping strategy—wired in childhood, reinforced by shame, supercharged by biology, and sustained by secrecy.➡️ Most recovery plans obsess over the problem—but few focus on the systems that build lasting transformation.➡️ That's why so many men fail. In this episode, I'll break down:Why this quote is mandatory training if you want to build healthy sexuality and a great lifeWhy sex and porn addiction is so hard to breakHow your biology, early exposure, shame, and emotional repression create a perfect stormAnd the 9 essential systems of The Mindful Habit System—developed over 13 years, used by thousands of men, and built to help you take back control of your lifeThese systems are the foundation for sustained success:Purpose & DirectionRisk ManagementSelf-Leadership (including self-control & self-esteem)AccountabilityCommunity & ConnectionMindfulness & FaithGratitudeHealthy SexualityIf you don't have your own system—borrow mine. I'm Craig Perra, founder of The Mindful Habit. I help high-performing professionals—doctors, lawyers, executives, and men around the world—break free from destructive sexual behaviors and create powerful lives rooted in integrity, connection, and purpose.▶️ Watch. Take notes. Reflect. This is the stuff no one taught us—but it's what we all need.
Most men think their fetishes and addictions are just about desire—but the truth is, there's something deeper at play. In this conversation, Craig breaks down why traditional recovery methods fail, how identity shifts are the real key to freedom, and what's actually driving these urges. Resentment is silently fueling your addiction and sabotaging your recovery—and most men don't even know it's happening. In this powerful episode of Sex Afflictions & Porn Addictions, Craig Perra, world-renowned coach and creator of The Mindful Habit System, exposes the hidden force that keeps men stuck in cycles of shame, secrecy, and sabotage: resentment. If you're battling sex addiction or porn addiction, chances are you're also fighting a part of you that feels controlled, dismissed, or unheard. That resentful part becomes the justifier—the one who says, “Why bother?”… “She'll never forgive me”… “I'll never be good enough.” Inside this episode:How resentment becomes the fuel for relapse and acting outThe truth about your power dynamic post-D-Day (Discovery Day)Why traditional therapy often misses this key internal battleThe game-changing impact of parts work (think Pixar's Inside Out for grown men in recovery)How to stop reacting and start leading your resentful part with self-leadershipAnd how journaling, awareness, and mindfulness can transform resentment from a saboteur to an allyYou'll learn why this internal part of you was trained to keep score, how it developed, and how to finally break free by meeting your needs proactively instead of reactively. Tony shares some sad news about the loss of his friend and colleague, Shawna Roberts. She was the one who introduced him to today's guest, Craig Perra. Craig is the creator of The Mindful Habit System https://www.themindfulhabit.com/, a life-changing approach that has helped countless people build healthier relationships, develop healthy sexuality, and finally live the lives they've always wanted but thought were out of reach. Craig opens up about his own battles with addiction, particularly compulsive pornography and sexual behavior, and his road to recovery that led him to create The Mindful Habit System. Tony's a big fan of this approach because it focuses on building strength rather than simply treating disease, and it's inspired him to create his own program, The Path Back. The main theme of the episode is how we can get stuck in negative behaviors and see ourselves in a bad light and how shame and conditioning can affect addiction and relationships. Both Tony and Craig emphasize that it's crucial to understand and accept all parts of ourselves with compassion instead of being hard on ourselves. They also chat about the benefits of integrating coaching into therapy, which helps therapists and clients build stronger relationships and achieve better results. They touch on the importance of valuing ourselves from within and helping people realize their own potential rather than relying on external validation. Tony and Craig also share their unique experiences on reality shows about digital addiction and porn, giving them an insight that they wouldn't otherwise have. Craig remembers Shawna and the work they did together for the LDS community to help with porn addiction. To wrap up, they reflect on how far they've come, the impact of The Path Back program, and their plans for the future, including the exciting possibility of therapist coaching. The chat gives listeners a deep understanding of how a strength-based approach to recovery, the role of internal family systems therapy, and self-perception are key to healing and personal growth. Stay tuned for Shame 101, an intimate and raw podcast, where world-recognized sex & porn addiction expert Craig Perra is going to demystify and legitimize shame, especially when it applies to sex & porn addicts. Listen as the Founder of The Mindful Habit System explains how shame is actually a good word. And YES, shame can help you if you learn how. Shame can tell us when we're getting in our own way or doing something hurtful to ourselves and others. People who are addicted to sex or porn (or both) all know about shame—and shame always seems to be urging us away from the things that are good for us: intimacy, honesty, respect for others' boundaries (and for our own). So what do we do with all this shame? How does it help us? Does it just make things worse? In this podcast episode, I introduce the idea of loving your shameful part and explain how to listen really well to your shame in order to use it as a compass guiding you toward more healthy and fulfilling choices in life.
Craig Perra is a rehab specialist who has used his own experience as a recovering sex and drug addict to help people across 27 countries and 6 continents break the cycle of addiction. And while addictions to drugs, alcohol, porn, gambling among others are the norm, more and more over the last few years, addiction to phones/tablets/digital devices/the internet/social media has become a huge problem. And it's a problem that's explored in the new A&E docu-series, “Digital Addiction”…and we talked to Craig all about it this morning!
Craig Perra, coach and founder of the The Mindful Habit, joins PFR for his record-setting 6th episode. Craig shares about his recent trip to Coachella, what's exciting him now in coaching, and he makes a big TV announcement. https://recoveredman.com/279
I first discovered Craig and The Mindful Habit in June 2020. Last year, when I lost my online business due to a range of factors (Mostly outside of my control), I wanted to see if I could use my marketing skills to help The Mindful Habit in any way that I could, and so I became an affiliate and I've done some work for The Mindful Habit ever since. I've been lucky enough to work with Craig for over a year now and I honestly don't think I have learned more from anyone else than from him in these last 12 months. Although I have not been coached directly by Craig, I did join his group coaching program and learned loads there and from his free content. Craig and his wife Michelle are really great people who inspire me tremendously and I feel really fortunate that I have been able to create a connection with them and for all of the help that The Mindful Habit have provided me. It was a privilege to have Craig on the show to talk about his struggle with pornography and for him to provide plenty of advice on how to give up porn. When I listened back to this episode to edit it, I found myself learning even more. We discussed how the current disease-based addiction model is inadequate, why you need to make a habit to break a habit, how focusing on the problem is not enough, being bad at not doing something, feeding the right wolf, porn not being the root cause, embracing your power of choice, simping and much more. Craig Perra used to run a website about sex and porn addiction news called The Vicereport. He had a podcast and "I had the opportunity to interview Dr. David Ley and George Collins in what I thought would be a cage match between these two titans about whether sex addiction is real" says Craig. Dr. Ley authored the controversial book called the Myth of Sex Addiction, and George Collins, a former sex addict wrote Breaking the Cycle, Free Yourself From Sex Addiction, Porn Obsession and Shame.Dr. Ley also penned an article in the NY Post also entitled "Myth of Sex Addiction" blasting the sex addiction diagnosis and stating, "sex addiction is nothing more than a pop-psychology phenomenon, serving only to demonize sex, enforce moral views of sex and relationship and excuse irresponsible behaviors." George Collins fired back with two articles of his own, the first one entitled "Sex Addiction is Not a Myth" and the second, demanding personally that Dr. Ley "Stop Mocking Sex Addicts."Things get heated at times in this interview especially when George Collins, tells Dr. Ley his sex addiction bashing is hurting those suffering. Dr. Ley responds that there is no scientific evidence supporting an addiction label for compulsive sex, in fact it's bad for the client and society.
