In this episode, I had that privilege of chatting to Amy Davis from the podcast Generate Joy. We unpack what habits are, why they matter, how we can make them and how they can bring us closer to God and help us disciple our kids. Amy shares that the word habit used to be a trigger word for her. She thought it was restrictive and meant there would be no time for fun. But after implementing simple habits, she discovered the opposite. Habits created freedom in her day to do more of what she loved. They helped her in her relationship with God, and helped her point her kids to Jesus. If you've been on the fence about implementing habits, this episode will totally shift your mindset. Growing is better than weeding! In this episode of Habit Masters we discuss the importance of focusing on growth and positivity in your life rather than fixating on eliminating negative habits. We use the metaphor of a garden to illustrate that while weeding is necessary, the primary focus should be on planting and nourishing the good fruits you desire. Cultivating positive habits can crowd out negative ones and lead to a more fulfilling life. Take the next 7-10 days to test out the principle by growing something new in your life.ACTION STEP FROM THIS EPISODEPick one thing you want to start growing in your garden of life and commit to spending 5-15 minutes a day for the next 7-10 days in focused energy on that goal. Step 4 of changing habits is that it needs to be enjoyable for it to last. Simple bits of reinforcementlike soap that smells great or toothpaste that has a refreshing minty flavour can offer the immediate pleasure we need to enjoy a habit. Change is so much easier when it gives us joy.It is more likely we will repeat the behaviour when our expereince is satifying. Our human brain has evolved to prioritise immediate rewards over delayed ones.Key points in helping us change our behaviours are in this i-Mind Map:https://jimbennett.global/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Creating-Good-Habits-2.pdf

"You have as many hours in a day as Beyonce." Uhhh, ok... I'm pretty sure hours/day isn't the only difference. But what is preventing you from living the life of your dreams or being who you'd like to be? Often we are standing in our own ways with our habits. Because the way we behave today is a great predictor of how we'll behave tomorrow. And a year from now. And five years from now. Much of our lives are governed by our habits. As for our teens, much of their future lives will be governed by the habits that they create today. No, none of us will likely be Beyonce if we just develop healthier habits, but hopefully, we can get you and your teens all a bit closer to having that life or being that person you dream of.Thank you for listening and being part of this community! 3 Steps to your morning routine. As we head back into the fall, back to school and a more scheduled life, Here are my top tips to your new morning routine. Done over perfect. Life is a marathon not a sprint so focus on 3 days a week and allow for deviation. Think long term and even if you are able to do it once a week for a few weeks, that's a new habit. I think aiming for everyday or even 5 days a week can be unattainable/ unstainable and much more unrealistic. We are busy. So plan for the unexpected. Stop with the all or nothing. Be proud of yourself for the little habits. Ie drinking water before your coffee. Meditating once a week. Celebrate the small. Pick a manageable amount of time. Maybe start with 5 minutes of working out or meditating, instead of an hour, you'll likely be able to fit that in with even a busy day/week. Bite size attainable habits and planning for real life instead of the perfect unicorn day which almost never happens. I am working on drinking a glass of water before my coffee, and journaling and working out 3 mornings a week. That being said the workouts will start back regularly in September because . . .summer holidays. But this is exactly the point. The Key to ThrivingBREAK the Habit of Just Surviving - Matthew KellyGet Matthew's 60 Second Wisdom delivered to your inbox: https://www.matthewkelly.com/subscribeVideo Transcript:“We have real and legitimate needs, but too often we focus on our wants and sacrifice our needs. Our legitimate needs are best understood in relation to each of the four aspects of the human person—physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. These needs exist not only in these different areas, but also on different levels. There are some things we need simply to survive. We call these primary needs, and this category includes the fundamentals that are necessary to sustain human life. Examples of primary needs would be food to eat, water to drink, and air to breathe. Without these primary legitimate needs, our lives would very quickly be brought to a grinding halt. Our primary needs are fundamental to our existence. We need them just to survive. But life is not just about surviving, it's about thriving, about becoming the-best-versions-of-ourselves. Our secondary needs are not critical to our survival. We can survive without them for years in many cases. But they are essential if we are going to thrive in any (or all) of the four aspects of our lives. When our secondary needs are being fulfilled, we begin to blossom and bloom as human beings. The satisfaction of our secondary needs allows us to achieve and maintain optimum health and well-being. Among them would be needs such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and healthy relationships. Every day we attend to our primary needs—those things necessary merely to sustain our existence. In many cases we do this without even thinking about it. You don't have to remind yourself to breathe, you just breathe. You have made a habit of breathing. You do it now by instinct. Similarly, you eat and drink several times a day. You probably don't have to think too much about it. Eating and drinking have also become a habit for you. You are in the habit of surviving. You take care of your primary needs, because you have to. On the other hand, we often neglect our secondary needs, either because we are too busy or too lazy or we simply don't consider them urgent. The question is, are you satisfied being in the habit of surviving, or are you ready to get into the habit of thriving? For a moment, think about each of the four areas: physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual. Which are you thriving in and which are you just surviving in? Our secondary needs are the key to thriving. They may not seem urgent in light of the 105 things you have on your to-do list today, but they are probably more important than anything on that list. The first step in our quest to become the-best-version-of-ourselves is to define our legitimate needs. The second step is to create a lifestyle that fulfills those legitimate needs. We all have legitimate needs. The fulfillment of these needs is one of the very practical ways we can learn to embrace our essential purpose. If we are wise enough to seek their counsel, our legitimate needs will advise us what is necessary to maintain health of body, heart, mind, and spirit.”If you have not read LIFE IS MESSY, order your copy today: https://amzn.to/2TTgZKn Subscribe to Matthew's YouTube Channel today! https://www.youtube.com/c/MatthewKellyAuthor/featured?sub_confirmation=1https://www.matthewkelly.comGet Matthew's 60 Second Wisdom delivered to your inbox: https://www.matthewkelly.com/subscribe The Best Version of Yourself and 60 Second Wisdom are registered trademarks.#MatthewKelly #BestVersionOfYourself #BestVersion #ThoughtLeader
