It's 106 miles to Chicago, they've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and they're wearing sunglasses....The brothers are Joliet Jake Blue (John Belushi) and Elmwood Blues (Dan Ackroyd)....and they're on a mission from God. Well actually they're on a mission to save the Catholic home where they grew up and to get the band back together. Seems simple enough but there are a LOT of obstacles in their way including US Marshalls, Chicago police, Illinois State Troopers, the Illinois Nazis, the Good Ol' Boys, and...the late, great Carrie Fisher playing "Mystery Woman" who comes HEAVILY armed! :o John Landis (Animal House, Coming to America, An American Werewolf in London) directed this wildly ambitious action comedy musical loosely adapted from the two titular fictional brothers who performed on Saturday Night Live around this time. Plot is but an afterthought when you have wall-to-wall car chases and/or extended musical numbers from several R&B music luminaries including Ray Charles, Cab Calloway, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, John Lee Hooker, and Chaka Khan. And that's not even accounting for an extended stacked cast including Kathleen Freeman, John Candy, Steven Williams, Henry Gibson, Charles Napier, and countless others!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

One a basic level, ‘60s cinema is the story of the complete breakdown of censorship rules about what could and could not be shown on American theater screens. Hollywood's Production Code was already falling apart in the ‘50s when competition with television forced movies to offer kinds of entertainment that were not available on the small screen. Films from countries with fewer restrictions on content were being shown more frequently and naturist documentaries were getting around rules about nudity – though you had to go to “art” cinemas or less reputable theaters to see these things. While the studios still had strict guidelines on what was acceptable for release in mainstream theaters, smaller theaters were pushing boundaries on what they were willing to show audiences. As a result, Hollywood, in order to keep up, threw all their old self-censorship rules by the end of the ‘60s.One of the major figures on the grindhouse circuit who continued to push the amount of sex and nudity that could be shown in films throughout the decade – and made enough money doing it for the studios to really take notice – was Russ Meyer. His goofy, satirical, surprisingly well-made exploitation films were cutting-edge smut that gained popularity over the course of the ‘60s because they delivered the sleaze they promised and dis it with skill and style. Eventually he gained a cult reputation among cineastes and reputable film critics that continues to this day, even though many of his films are more shocking by modern standards than they were when they first hit screens. In this episode, Bart and Jenna discuss all things boobs, sexual desperation and boobs. Bart takes on the brunt of the burden, getting through the entire decade and finding there's more to Meyer than pure titillation. Jenna, however, is less than enthused with Meyer's ‘comedic' sensibilities, finding Bart's cherry-picked selections mostly intolerable. But even both agree that at least a little bit of Meyer is essential viewing for anybody who want to understand the what the decade in cinema was all about. The following films are discussed:• Lorna (1964) Directed by Russ Meyer Starring Lorna Maitland, Mark Bradley, James Rucker• Mudhoney (1965) Directed by Russ Meyer Starring Hal Hopper, Antoinette Cristiani, John Furlong• Faster, Pussycat! Chris in Miami, Jeff, Bobby, and Mike get ready for the big Super Match this Sunday by discussing the lost "football" movie starring Ernest Borgnine, Oliver Tobias, Henry Silva, and Charles Napier. The backstory for this movie is legendary but a guest's personal connection to this film uncovered during the episode is mind blowing.
-EXPLICIT CONTENT-Jerome and Chris discuss two of their favorite horror movies: Silence of the Lambs (1991) and Midsommar (2019). In Silence of the Midsommar - Part One, Midsommar was mainly covered. In this episode, Silence of the Lambs takes the front seat. They explore the similarities and differences between these films, and how they both deal with themes of trauma, identity, and transformation. They also analyze the characters, the plot, the cinematography, the music, and the symbolism of these films, and share their personal stories and opinions about them. They also play a game of six degrees of separation, where they try to connect two actors from these films through other movies they have been in. They challenge each other with Isabel Grill, who played Maja in Midsommar, and Charles Napier, who played Lt. Boyle in Silence of the Lambs. They manage to find a connection between them in five degrees, using some obscure and recent movies. Can you connect them in less? Remember, they can't use either movie from the show! This episode is full of spoilers, insights, trivia, humor, and passion for these films. It's a must-listen for any horror fan or movie lover. It's also a very long episode, so it's split into two parts. The first part covers Silence of the Lambs, and the second part covers Midsommar. I am Tosk!" Scott MacDonald's Star Trek Career, Part 1 Scott MacDonald has had some of the most substantial guest star roles throughout Star Trek, all while playing aliens covered from head to toe in makeup and prosthetics. Even more peculiar, Scott's first two Star Trek roles practically aired back to back when they first ran on television, an extremely rare thing to happen even today! We discuss his first role in Trek (and on TV) as Tosk in the first season Star Trek DS9 episode "Captive Pursuit," and he followed that up by playing a Romulan named N'Vek in the sixth season TNG episode "Face of the Enemy." After that, he played Gowron's brother in the "Star Trek: Klingon" PC game, directed by Jonathan Frakes and working alongside Robert O'Reilly! Scott gives us some of the most in-depth behind-the-scenes Star Trek stories ever to tell us about the horrors of his makeup routine as Tosk, including contacts that caused searing pain to his eyes, the special things he asked of the writers as that character, gearing up to be a Romulan while still wearing his Tosk makeup, why N'Vek was supposed to be a recurring character in TNG and what stopped that from happening, performing with Colm Meaney, Marina Sirtis, Carolyn Seymour, and the mayhem of working on the Klingon PC game. Plus, the ties between Star Trek and Shakespeare, the incredibly long and arduous audition process to land the Tosk role, a surreal encounter with Patrick Stewart, and another even more odd moment with Richard Gere, the six-hour epic play "The Kentucky Cycle," the way he understands his alien characters inside and out, stories from "Three Ninjas Knuckle Up," a hilarious story from Charles Napier about William Shatner, and much more. Come back next week for part two to learn about his time on the pilot of Voyager, his second DS9 appearance in "Hippocratic Oath" as the Jem'hadar named Goran'Agar, and his final role in multiple episodes from Enterprise as the evil Xindi Commander Dolim. Big on TV in the 70s, a drive-in staple in the 80s, a TV/DTV star in the 90s and one who closed it out doing voice-overs for the videogame Red Dead Redemption, he might be the most fun cult actor we've talked about yet. The following program also contains impressions of similarly uncanny cult celebs like Bing Crosby, Jerry Lewis, Charles Napier, Jeff Goldblum, Al Pacino, Michael Caine, Christopher Walken, Charlie Sheen, Marlon Brando & Peter Graves! This week the boys are welcoming Deadbeat Punk from WTFDYW Podcast to discuss the only film he'll watch without being in that chair from A Clockwork Orange, it's The Blues Brothers. We include why John Landis is no longer allowed to hire a Helecoptor and what James Brown and Boris Johnson have in Common. --- The Basis of WTFDYW is cracking! Every Monday a guest tells Punk What The F*** They Want. Simple concept for a simple podcast. Get it anywhere you find your podcasts you C***s! --- The Blues Brothers is a 1980 American musical comedy film directed by John Landis.[4] It stars John Belushi as "Joliet" Jake Blues and Dan Aykroyd as his brother Elwood, characters developed from the recurring musical sketch "The Blues Brothers" on NBC variety series Saturday Night Live. The film is set in and around Chicago, Illinois, where it was filmed, and the screenplay was written by Aykroyd and Landis. It features musical numbers by rhythm and blues (R&B), soul, and blues singers James Brown, Cab Calloway (in his final feature film role), Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Chaka Khan, and John Lee Hooker. It features non-musical supporting performances by Carrie Fisher, Henry Gibson, Charles Napier and John Candy. The story is a tale of redemption for paroled convict Jake and his blood brother Elwood, who set out on "a mission from God" to save from foreclosure the Roman Catholic orphanage in which they were raised. To do so, they must reunite their R&B band and organize a performance to earn $5,000 needed to pay the orphanage's property tax bill. Along the way, they are targeted by a homicidal "mystery woman", Neo-Nazis, and a country and western band—all while being relentlessly pursued by the police. Universal Studios, which had won the bidding war for the film, was hoping to take advantage of Belushi's popularity in the wake of Saturday Night Live, the film Animal House, and The Blues Brothers' musical success; it soon found itself unable to control production costs. The start of filming was delayed when Aykroyd, who was new to film screenwriting, took six months to deliver a long and unconventional script that Landis had to rewrite before production, which began without a final budget. On location in Chicago, Belushi's partying and drug use caused lengthy and costly delays that, along with the destructive car chases depicted onscreen, made the final film one of the most expensive comedies ever produced. Due to concerns that the film would fail, its initial bookings were less than half of those similar films normally received. Released in the United States on June 20, 1980, it received mostly positive reviews from critics and grossed over $115 million in theaters worldwide before its release on home video, and has become a cult classic over the years. A sequel, Blues Brothers 2000, was released in 1998 to critical and commercial failure. In 2020, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

On May 1841 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Charles Napier Hemy is born. He would spend his early life trying to decide if his calling was in the church, at sea or in the service of art. By the time that he commits to painting, the British School was exploring nature and its evocative power, and gaining prominence across Europe. A renowned Falmouthian, Napier Hemy settles in the town and spends a lifetime capturing life by the coast and the sea. In this episode, we tell his story and weave the work of poet Sarah Cave through it, inspired by Charles Napier Hemy, his process and his art. Back to sex on film. Supervixens is another X rated movie from the seventies. A bit more exotic than Flesh Gordon to be quite honest. When a deranged serial killer cop chases you down, you better be ready for anything. Don't ever use Polish dynamite.
John Hudson returns to continue our look at the films of Antonio Margheriti. This time we examine one of his last completed pictures ALIEN FROM THE DEEP (1989) which nakedly steals elements from several 80's Hollywood hits. In fact, the movie can become a bit of a ‘spot the reference' game as it goes along copping half a dozen ideas or sequences from other, more well-known works. But does this movie have enough creativity and energy to make an entertaining new thing out of all these recycled pieces? Joy is often in the eye of the beholder…. What this film certainly does have is the epic onscreen presence of Charles Napier and Margheriti regular Alan Collins a.k.a. Luciano Pigozzi. These two men shoulder the acting weight of a script that often seems to have been missing a few important pages. Filmed in the Philippines with the usual explosive miniatures to enhance the scope of the action this is one part sweaty jungle adventure, one part evil corporation tale and one part deadly alien attack. Oh! I forgot to mention the alien until now! But the film doesn't get around to the big murderous creature until more than half the running time is over either so I don't feel too bad. And any similarities between this film's alien and the monsters from a certain big budget series of hit movies is completely coincidental, I'm sure. Mr. Hudson and I dig into this one and are happily surprised by the lack of onscreen animal deaths even if someone really was throwing snakes at actors for one scene. We get excited at certain points in the discussion as we make note of the script's problems and the variability of the character's personalities. And, if you pay attention, you'll hear me call Charles Napier ALAN Napier and that is a very silly mistake to make. Of course, the idea of Charles Napier as the 1966 TV Batman's butler is pretty damned cool! The show can be reached at thebloodypit@gmail.com for any comments or suggestions.

Episode 80 (Yuppie Nightmares Pt. 2) This week Alec and Derek check out Jonathan Demme’s 1986 Something Wild. Things take a turn for the wild for banker Charlie Diggs (Jeff Daniels) after encountering the alluring, impulse and mysterious Lulu (Melanie Griffith) at a downtown diner, leading to an unexpected weekend crossing multiple state lines full of robbed liquor and convenience stores, roadside motels, class reunions and colorful roadside characters (peppered with a veritable who’s who of cameo appearances featuring John Waters, John Sayles, and Charles Napier) as well as Lulu’s volatile ex-husband Ray (Ray Liotta in his terrifying screen debut). Set to an electrifying soundtrack of new wave and world influences such as David Byrne, Celia Cruz, Jimmy Cliff, New Order as well as a memorable performance from The Feelies. Not unlike Dorothy’s trek down the yellow brick road, Charlie’s trip through roadside America offers a voyage to self discovery through encountering the various lives along the path.Three ways to support this podcast:1. Moonfire is a movie that at first seems to be about an astronaut who crashes his capsule on the Mexican ranch of a nazi living in hiding, but then it is really mostly about Charles Napier driving a big rig with no shirt on. Jason and Todd touch on the greatness of Napier, the genius of Andy Robinson who is not in this movie, and also the problem with shrinks who come from overseas to save America. Trucks!
In this, the very first episode of Earth-2.net: The Show in the post-Episode 1000 Era, Dan and Mike sit down to discuss The Spirit. Wait! Don't run away! Not the 2008 pile of garbage written and directed by Frank Miller. But rather the 1987 made-for-TV pilot starring Flash Gordon, Major Kira Nerys, Veronica Clare, Professor Moriarty, not-Charles Napier, and Leon / Mondo. This fun mixture of light comedy and 1980s television action shouldn't work, yet somehow the creative masterminds behind the project made it the cult hit it is today. Actress LAURENE LANDON is an incredibly gifted actress. She's had a career in Showbiz that many actors would kill to have. During her almost 40 years in Hollywood she has appeared in films alongside talented actors like: Robert Davi, Lou Diamond Philips, Charles Napier, Betty Davis, Lee Van Cleef, David Carradine, Eric Robert, Red Buttons, James Earl Jones, Eric Braeden and a dear friend of mine, the great Hank Garrett to name a few, and she just wrapped up a film called Nations Fire where she starred alongside, acting Legend, Bruce Dern. But she is probably best remembered for playing Teresa Mallory in Maniac Cop and Maniac Cop 2! SUBSCRIBE to our YOUTUBE CHANNEL! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCw4fcgG7ODeiEbR7HDUZl3A

Our sixth episode is a perfect introdoockshun for new "Worst Episode Ever" fans. We jump into Season 12 for an episode that the hosts actually saw back in the pre-9/11 days of "The Simpsons." Jack, Dan, and returning guest Nick Noga dig into "Pokey Mom," the episode where Michael Keaton, a recently released criminal, moves in with the Simpsons. So, the whole town has lived with the Simpsons at some point, right? We look at the differences in the opening animation over the years, the glory of Charles Napier's voice over work, and Jack continues his unending love of Marge. What was this episode trying to say about chiropractors? How does Snake not make a single appearance in an episode about prison? And can someone please make us a re-cut trailer about Marge slowly losing her mind? Plus, we add "Pokey Mom" to our ever-expanding list of the worst episodes ever and where it ends up may shock you. But probably not. Check it out in the latest and greatest "Worst Episode Ever" and please don't mind the sirens and the honking... Never miss an episode and subscribe in an RSS reader or through iTunes or on Stitcher. If you're an FX subscriber, you can watch "Pokey Mom" right now on Simpsons World. The boys bear witness into Part II of the Rambo saga, i.e. where everything goes off the rails. But it gives them an excuse to dig into the varied and astounding filmography of character actor Charles Napier. They also discuss the long delayed Deadpool movie, SyFy Channel pitting the cast of Police Academy against lava-spewing giant spiders and the possibility that William Shatner's greatest role might in fact be Denny Crane.
