The iconic DLD conference will be holding its twentieth annual event in Munich next month. Founded in January 2005, DLD has hosted many of the world's leading tech thinkers and entrepreneurs from both Europe and the United States. What most distinguishes DLD, however, is its community of loyal regulars whose presence in Munich in January promises a degree of certainty in an increasingly uncertain world. One of the most loyal DLDers is Jeff Jarvis, the prolific tech gadfly, always to found in the front row of the DLD auditorium, listening with great care to all the speeches. And in this conversation in celebration of DLD's 20th anniversary, Jarvis both looks back to evaluate how the world has changed since January 2005 and looks forward to imagine the next twenty years. My newsletter: https://simonowens.substack.com/ When Keith Pepper bought a chain of print newspapers back in 2020, he received an email from a columnist at the Atlanta Journal Constitution that basically asked if he was crazy. But Keith had a plan for taking a company that generated 98% of its revenue from print advertising and converting it into a digital-first media company. And he's done just that. Today, Rough Draft Atlanta generates 27% of its revenue from digital ads, and it managed this feat without seeing a significant decline in print advertising. This has allowed Keith to reinvest in the business by hiring more journalists, and it's now stronger than ever. In a recent interview, Ketih explained how he consolidated all the newspapers under a single brand, his strategy for attracting online ads, and why he's avoided placing his content behind a paywall.
Keith Pepper, owner of Rough Draft Atlanta, shares his journey of transforming a traditional newspaper into a digital-first media powerhouse. This episode dives into the challenges of competing for attention in the digital age, the continued relevance of print media, and the role of newsletters in fostering community engagement. Keith also explores the future of hyperlocal journalism, the impact of AI, and strategies for sustaining local news in a rapidly changing media landscape. Perfect for those interested in the evolution of media and community-focused journalism.

Brock Berry has spent the last two decades as an advertising and marketing leader in the news media industry during what many call the "digital revolution." Just as more and more news consumers were accessing local content online, Berry found his comfort with digital concepts a vital asset as he became the head of the advertising sales department at the Denver Post. And when that major market newspaper underwent ownership changes, he found himself designing and leading the parent company's digital services division, Digital First Media's AdTaxi Network. Today, Berry is the founder and CEO of AdCellerantx, a Denver-based digital advertising and technology company that partners with hundreds of media companies and agencies in markets across North America to provide a complete menu of digital solutions to tens of thousands of local businesses. Since starting AdCellerant in 2011, the company experienced over 4,000% growth — from zero to over $75 million in revenue in less than three years. Because of its success, Inc. Magazine recognized it as the 83rd fastest-growing company in the US. Berry also is a business and technology columnist for Newsweek and was named CEO of the year by the Colorado Technology Association and top “40 under 40” by the Denver Business Journal. In this Episode of "E&P Reports," we explore the challenges in selling digital solutions to small businesses in a competitive marketplace with senior executive, entrepreneur and media advertising expert Brock Berry, CEO and founder of AdCellerant. Utilizing Berry's real-world experience leading a major technology company providing digital solutions to hundreds of local media companies for thousands of businesses, we gain his insights on the most effective ways we can serve, sell and maintain local advertising revenue through the sale of all forms of multimedia solutions. Berry also offers his advice to local advertising executives on how to build a winning local sales environment.

In today’s ever-evolving world, companies are realizing the importance of being agile, innovative and forward-thinking in order to stay relevant and keep up. As an intrapreneur however, it can be difficult to drive that change inside an organization or even get buy-in for new ideas and processes. But even as an entrepreneur where you have much more control, driving towards the outcome you intended doesn’t always net out the way you expect. Jim Brady, former executive editor of WashingtonPost.com and CEO of Spirited Media, has been on both sides of the coin. He’s been at the forefront of digital journalism from being part of the original WashingtonPost.com launch team and then serving as their executive editor where they won several awards, to managing News and Sports Programming at AOL, and then leading other major news media organizations and their innovation initiatives like Digital First Media before running his own venture. In this episode, Jim shares the lessons learned on what it took for him to create that momentum for change and innovation in his various roles -- because transformation doesn’t start with technology or systems and processes, it starts with building that winning team. Steve Buttry, longtime educator, journalist and friend of our podcast, died of pancreatic cancer on Feb. 19. He will be missed by the countless journalists whose careers he touched with his steadfast encouragement and enthusiasm for the future of our industry. Steve was a really nice guy. He was funny and modest. To honor Steve's memory, we're reposting our first interview with him from the early days of our podcast. We were still figuring things out and he was happy to come into the studio and help three of his former students from American University on their strange side project. Thanks for everything, Steve. Journalism has got this thing for The New York Times and rightfully so. Few news outlets in the U.S. publish Times-level quality journalism and certainly not with the same frequency as the Times. It's the gold standard, the freaking Newspaper of Record. The New York Times is The New York Times. That's what people usually say when they're discussing the future of journalism. We're all floundering here, but The New York Times can do this or that because it's at a different level. But, have you seen the Times' Innovation report?
A peek behind the scenes of the next It's All Journalism podcast with producers Megan Cloherty and Michael O'Connell talking to Steve Buttry of Digital First Media. We're going to be talking about the New York Times Digital Innovation Report. Check back later for the full podcast
The story broke April 2, when John Paton, CEO of Digital First Media, announced that his chain of 75 daily newspapers was pulling the plug on its two-year-old experiment in shared, digital content, Project Thunderdome."We had 50-some-odd people and 95 percent of them will be leaving the company as part of this change," said Jim Brady, DFM's editor-in-chief and chief architect of Project Thunderdome. "So, for all intents and purposes, Thunderdome is dead. Whether the work lives on or some of the new ideas and technologies we brought into the company will live on â I think they will â but they're going to have to be managed by the papers now."
WASHINGTON - Knowing an audience is one of the most important aspects to keep in mind for any journalism organization. For Ryan Teague Beckwith and Amber Phillips, it makes their job very different from that of their counterparts. Teague Beckwith is the politics channel manager for Digital First Media, known as Project Thunderdome. Phillips reports on Capitol Hill for Digital First Media. The service provides national news content to local newspapers nationwide. The format changes how the two would otherwise traditionally report political issues. They can't drill down too far on a bill or topic. They can't report something that has implications in only one region. They keep their political reporting broad and digestible. "We're not looking at a Politico audience that is really there for the latest who-called-who-what-in-the-cloakroom kind of stuff. What we spend a lot of time doing is saying, 'All right, what's going on in D.C? We spend a lot of time thinking about what's going on in D.C. and we read all that coverage and then we say, 'What does that mean for you,'" Teague Beckwith said. It can be a challenge from a reporting perspective not only to decide what to cover, but what angle to take. Especially given such wide parameters. "When I talk to congressman and explain who we are and why they should talk to me, we have to get over the idea that it's regional; that even though we're writing for these local sites, we're not necessarily writing about regional issues. We really have to keep it very national," Phillips said. Thunderdome is experimenting with new technology in reporting including using Google Glass and operating it's own drone from the New York office. While Teague Beckwith says they are simply playing with the drone to see how it takes video and what the limitations are, he says it's important to both understand and stay in the forefront of technology. That's especially true for stories that can be told visually. The team tries to approach each story with an open mind and report it in the medium that would serve it best. "For us I think the rule tends to be, 'Can we make that as visual as possible while still relaying information that the average reader cares about and putting that info in bite-sized chunks?' That's like the bottom line for us," Phillips said.
Here's a little tease to our upcoming podcast interview with Ryan Teague Beckwith and Amber Phillips of Digital First Media. Our recording was interrupted by an unexpected guest.
