So weit, so gut. Jahrhunderts widerfahren. Zu Gast in dieser Zeitblende: Philipp Hofstetter, Historiker. René Hornung, Journalist. Literatur: Forster, Jakob Rudolf: Justizmorde im 19. Jahrhundert. Wahrheitsgetreue Darstellung des fast unglaublich Verfolgten Schweizers J.R. Forster, Heiratsvermittler von Brunnadern (St. Gallen). Ein Notschrei an das Volk. Zürich: Selbstverlag, 1898. Hofstetter, Philipp / Hornung, René: Der Urning. Selbstbewusst schwul vor 1900. Zürich: Hier und Jetzt Verlag, 2024. Walser, Erasmus: Homosexualität. In: Historisches Lexikon der Schweiz (HLS), Online-Version vom 4.12.2013.

Ariane Hofstetter discusses the importance of sustainability reporting and what goes into creating a quality sustainability report. A sustainability report is not just a marketing brochure but an official document that allows companies to track their efforts, inform stakeholders about their progress, and manage non-financial risks. Ariane explains the key features of a good sustainability report, including transparency, comparability of data, accuracy, timely publication, reliability, relevance, and accessibility of information. Sustainability reporting is not limited to large multinational companies. Kathryn is currently running a four-week class called Ritual Crafting for Barn and Stable, and I was excited to have a chat with her about how she weaves the practice of ritual into her life as a horsewoman and facilitator. Throughout our conversation, Kathryn offered insights and tools that horse-people far and wide can tap into to deepen their relationship with themselves and their horses. Kathryn shared that intention really is the golden thread that ties potency and power to our activities with our horses, and that developing rituals can be as simple and accessible as asking ourselves questions and doing the inner work to be able to hear and honour the answers — no extra supplies required. We also touched on some nuances surrounding the conversation of consent with our horses, especially as it pertains to introducing ritual to our interactions with them, and some tips on connecting to our heart centre so that we can craft clear and aligned intentions. We rounded off the episode with an important piece of awareness surrounding cultural appropriation, and I was so grateful to hear Kathryn's thoughtful perspective. The changing of the seasons (especially here in the Northern Hemisphere as we move towards winter) is always a rich time to slow down and reflect on our journey with our horses, so I hope this episode inspired you to try new ways of connecting and relating with your equine loved-ones. Kathryn Hofstetter is an Equine Trauma Specialist, Holistic Horsemanship Mentor, Equine Herbalist, Usui and Equine Reiki Master Teacher, Shadow Work Doula, and practicing folkloric Green Witch with over twenty years of horsemanship experience and nearly fifteen years of experience as an educator in the equine industry. With her diverse combination of professional modalities and academic experiences, Kathryn brings an eclectic perspective to the ways we can bridge the gap between the practical and the mystical aspects of inner work and connection with horses. Comedian Steve Hofstetter joins a week before his coming to La Crosse. A comic who dabbles in politics, we threw Hofstetter some of the headlines coming out of Wisconsin and let him work his comedic magic. Also joining in studio, former Riverfest board member Brad Pitel. Along with talking comedy, Pitel discussed bringing big acts to the fest, and how he big timed one country music star — which may or may not have led to his no longer being on the Riverfest board #Sarcasm. Some of the topics we threw at Hofstetter included Minnesota legalizing recreational marijuana and a first-grade teacher being banned over the Dolly Parton-Miley Cyrus song Rainbowland. Hofstetter also had some funny analogies on the Constitution, as well as some of his Canadian experiences, as he wraps up a tour there.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In our fourth episode, Kirsten Dunlop and Dominic Hofstetter discuss why adopting a systems thinking perspective is key to tackling the climate crisis. They explain that it's necessary to overcome a project-by-project mentality to achieve structural change. We hear why achieving a net-zero economy calls for an approach as ambitious as the Marshall plan. Both guests argue for the need to build portfolios of investments that are connected and create synergies to achieve sustainable transformation. Kirsten and Dominic also discuss how such an investment logic is at odds with traditional finance portfolios, which are built for diversification to reduce financial risk. Last but not least, the conversation addresses what needs to be done to foster a new logic to finance transformation. Links Climate-KIC is the EU's main climate innovation initiative, of which Kirsten is the CEO. The Transformation Capital Whitepaper authored by Dominic elaborates on many of the ideas touched upon in this episode. The TransCap Initiative sets out to put to practice the ideas articulated in the Whitepaper. For feedback on the show or to suggest guests for future episodes, contact us at scifi@esmt.org

What's the science behind espresso making? In this episode, I feature a paper by Cameron and colleagues who developed a mathematical model to help elucidate the parameters of coffee extraction in espresso making. Espresso is the most widely consumed coffee beverage, yet the most susceptible to variation in quality. However, with this model, the authors showed that using fewer coffee beans and grinding more coarsely, are the key to a drink that is cheaper to make and more consistent from shot to shot. Full citation: Cameron, M. I., Morisco, D., Hofstetter, D., Uman, E., Wilkinson, J., Kennedy, Z. C., ... & Foster, J. M. (2020). Author, columnist, and comedian Steve Hofstetter is often called the hardest working man in show-business. With all due respect to the late James Brown. Hofstetter's national TV debut came on ESPN's Quite Frankly, where Stephen A. Smith yelled at him for three minutes. Hofstetter has also appeared on CBS' "Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson", Showtime's "White Boyz in the Hood", VH1's "Countdown", Sundance's "On the Road in America", and ABC's "Barbara Walter's Special", where he thankfully did not cry. He is the host and executive producer of "Laughs" on Fox networks, where he only cries occasionally. One of the top booked acts on the college circuit, the original writer for collegehumor.com has also released six albums. Hofstetter has written humor columns for the New York Times, SportsIllustrated.com, and NHL.com, where he publicly admitted to being a Ranger fan. After hosting Four Quotas on Sirius Satellite Radio for two seasons, Hofstetter moved to broadcast radio, and his Sports Minute (Or So) was syndicated on over 170 stations and in over 30 newspapers. Hofstetter's second live comedy album ("Cure For the Cable Guy") reached #20 on Billboard's comedy charts. His third album ("Dark Side of the Room") was the first ever pay-what-you-want" comedy album, since people were going to steal it anyway. His fourth album consisted of an hour of 100% ad-libbed material, which is, frankly, nuts. And his fifth album hit #1 on iTunes' comedy charts, which is also a bit nuts. Hofstetter's brutal tour schedule consists of over 100 colleges and dozens of clubs every year, and is fueled by an immense online popularity, tons of press, and a Prius with great gas mileage. He reached 200,000 friends on Facebook (still the world record), 400,000 more on MySpace, and high shelves in grocery stores. While Hofstetter's live shows are routinely sold out, he is best known for his writing, first published at age 15, mainly to impress girls. At 18, he co-founded "Sports Jerk of the Week", an irreverent website featured by press like USA Today's Baseball Weekly, Sports Illustrated and CNN. And at 20, Hofstetter took a year off of school to head up web content for the New York Yankees. The Yankees won the World Series that year, which would have been wonderful if they hadn't beaten Hofstetter's Mets. Yes, he's also a Mets fan. Poor kid. While an undergraduate at Columbia University, Hofstetter was a well-read columnist for the Columbia Daily Spectator and a voice of the Lions. After a summer writing for Maxim, ESPN, and Sports Illustrated for Kids, Hofstetter syndicated his column in several newspapers. Without his glasses, Hofstetter also looks a great deal like Michael Rappaport.
