How do you build a technology platform from the ground up with music as your first passion? Once that is done, how do you distribute that content with all the digital platforms that are available and how do you get paid or set your price? Getting to point A to point B is what Patrick Hill is doing with his new engagement platform, Disctopia, for content creatives and content owners to drive engagement and monetization. From his experience of 15 years in technology design, mar-tech, and internal communication software development, and from those around him in the community, he saw how folks can set their price on what they see as value for their content. We discuss the ideation process and mindset of how Patrick saw his worth and his skills as higher value outside of the corporate infrastructure, to provide a pathway for creatives, like himself, to set their own monetary value, to own their creative future. In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks with the CEO & Founder of Disctopia, Patrick Hill.Patrick Hill, the visionary behind Disctopia, explained that the platform offers content owners full transparency of their data and the opportunity to monetize it. Disctopia primarily focuses on audio and video content, providing insights into audience engagement. They distinguish between regular plays and highly engaged plays, which they term "true plays." This data allows content owners to charge different rates for different levels of engagement, thereby increasing their revenue potential. When asked about the implementation of Disctopia in school systems, Patrick revealed that they have already signed up a couple of schools for their program. They provide mobile podcast kits for students and teachers to set up podcast studios on campus, typically placed in the library or media center for easy access. Every student gets a Dystopia account to upload their content. Patrick acknowledged that implementing in schools can be challenging due to long billing cycles, but they work with schools off-cycle to make it easier.Key Points from the Episode:Disctopia: a platform for content owners to monetize their dataFocus on audio and video contentInsights on audience engagement, distinguishing between regular plays and "true plays"Example of client, Jet Magazine, using Disctopia's engagementmodelPartnership with SEMrush for keyword optimizationImplementation of Disctopia in school systemsMobile podcast kits for students and teachersPricing for independent creators, SMBs, and larger applicationsIntegration with Microsoft Teams and SharePointAbout Patrick Hill:Patrick Hill is the visionary Founder and CEO of Disctopia, a pioneering music streaming and podcast hosting platform. How can we give everyone a way to monetize their content. We all know that digital content is really at the surface of where we're going. As we just saw, currency is going digital. People are going digital in the Metaverse. Everything we do is going digital.” (10:26) (Patrick)“Everyone should have the option of how they want to monetize their business model.” (13:34)(Patrick)“I do believe that we do have an edge by starting in music, by being only focused on creatives, and being focused on the creator's economy. Our streaming platform is focused on that at the moment. We're gonna stay in that boat for about the next five years, until we grow out of that boat or until we need to get a bigger boat. Until then, we are really focused on helping people start a digital business, be it their voice or their face on a video.” (17:47) (Patrick)“Most entrepreneurs and podcasts have one brand; it's themselves. I tell people, ‘At some point you're not a podcaster or an artist; you're a business.'” (22:01) (Patrick)“The biggest difference about global content creation and U.S.-based content creation is that there is no structure globally.” (34:59) (Patrick)“Consistency is everything. Consistency is key in podcasting because you just have to keep going and you'll get better at it. Consistency is key in music because of the concentration of how many artists there are.” (40:01) (Patrick)“If they're blessed enough, everybody has two ears and two eyes. And you only have twenty- four hours a day. Typically, eight hours of that is consumed by dreams. So, you really gotta make good content, get it out there, and be

#107 - On Sunday, July 22, 2001, just three weeks before her wedding, 28-year-old Niqui McCown disappeared after doing laundry at a laundromat in Richmond, Indiana. A few months into the investigation, the police found her SUV parked at an apartment complex 40 miles away. Inside the car, they found her neatly folded laundry still inside laundry baskets. Even with two prime suspects, her case turned cold. What happened to Niqui McCown in July 2001? This is going to be a fun one, I can tell! I've been doing a lot of serious podcasts so I wanted to do some fun ones as well. I watched Woke: The Movie a few weeks back and had my mind blown a little. It's VERY off the wall, talks about Aliens, secret fleets of spaceships, bases in Antarctica, and human colonies on Mars - but there is a lot of fun in entertaining some of these ideas and some truth to be learnt from all of them as well. DMT discussion guaranteed! This episode is not meant to be taken seriously, all I wanted to do was run through some of the truth that emanates from the movie and have fun with discussing the far-out implications! Dr Lee Jones is a Professor of Political Economy & International Relations at the Queen Mary University of London. Dr Jones and I had a great conversation about China, covid policy, and making the best of Brexit. I've become increasingly concerned that a lot of people in society are unable to move on from the loss of Brexit to find ways to make the best of it - it is not the situation I wanted to be in, I wrote an entire book about it, but I believe there are opportunities to make this work for the British people (though we probably need to ditch the Tories to have any chance of that). It turns out that Dr Jones has similar views to me on the vaccine passports and he believes that the seemingly strange response to covid has been building in our society for a long long time.
