We're taking a long train ride on the California Zephyr. The Amtrak line winds through Emeryville, Sacramento, Truckee and then heads east toward Chicago. Parts of the trip are spectacularly beautiful, with scenes of the Rocky Mountains, Donner Lake and the Truckee River. This route also holds so much rich California history – a portion of it is close to the first transcontinental railroad. Starting in the late 1800s, the railroad developed in parallel with the state's agriculture business, food industries, and dining traditions. It also exploited land and workers, spurring civil rights activism. For her series CA Foodways, reporter Lisa Morehouse explores some of the little-known history of the connection between the railroad and food in our state. This episode was produced with support from the Food and Environment Reporting Network, and California Humanities, a nonprofit partner of National Endowment for the Humanities. Big thanks also go to the African American Museum and Library at Oakland, the library and archives at the California State Railroad Museum, and Rachel Reinhard. fWotD Episode 2586: Donner Party Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Monday, 3 June 2024 is Donner Party. The Donner Party, sometimes called the Donner–Reed Party, were a group of American pioneers who migrated to California in a wagon train from the Midwest. Delayed by a multitude of mishaps, they spent the winter of 1846–1847 snowbound in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Some of the migrants resorted to cannibalism to survive, primarily eating the bodies of those who had succumbed to starvation, sickness or extreme cold, but in one case two Native American guides were deliberately killed for this purpose. The Donner Party originated from Springfield, Illinois, and departed Independence, Missouri, on the Oregon Trail in the spring of 1846, behind many other pioneer families who were attempting to make the same overland trip. The journey west usually took between four and six months, but the Donner Party was slowed after electing to follow a new route called the Hastings Cutoff, which bypassed established trails and instead crossed the Rocky Mountains' Wasatch Range and the Great Salt Lake Desert in present-day Utah. The desolate and rugged terrain, and the difficulties they later encountered while traveling along the Humboldt River in present-day Nevada, resulted in the loss of many cattle and wagons, and divisions soon formed within the group.By early November, the migrants had reached the Sierra Nevada but became trapped by an early, heavy snowfall near Truckee Lake (now Donner Lake) high in the mountains. Their food supplies ran dangerously low, and in mid-December some of the group set out on foot to obtain help. Rescuers from California attempted to reach the migrants, but the first relief party did not arrive until the middle of February 1847, almost four months after the wagon train became trapped. Of the 87 members of the party, 48 survived. Historians have described the episode as one of the most fascinating tragedies in California history and in the entire record of American westward migration. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:18 UTC on Monday, 3 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Donner Party on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Arthur Neural.
Interview with Robin Dunbar, President & CEO of Grid Metals Corp. Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/grid-metals-tsxvgrdm-50-million-plan-to-unlock-high-grade-lithium-mine-4516Recording date: 30th May 2024Grid Metals Corp. (TSXV:GRDM) is a compelling investment opportunity in the critical minerals space. The Canadian exploration and development company is advancing two highly prospective battery metal projects in mining-friendly Manitoba.Grid's flagship asset is the Donner Lake lithium project. Donner Lake hosts a 7 million tonne spodumene resource which is modest in size but boasts strong grade consistency and favorable mineralogy. The real opportunity lies in Donner Lake's proximity to existing infrastructure. Grid is pursuing toll milling agreements with nearby facilities as an alternative to constructing a concentrator on site. This strategy could slash years off the development timeline and save hundreds of millions in capex.Permitting is a key near-term catalyst for Donner Lake. Grid expects to secure an advanced exploration permit imminently, allowing for development activities. The company is targeting a full mining permit in H1 2025, positioning it to move quickly into production in a recovering lithium price environment. While Donner Lake is the near-term focus, Grid's MM nickel-copper project offers significant upside. The MM Project has a 47.7Mt resource with 317 million pounds of copper, 263 million pounds of nickel and 452,000 ounces of combined palladium, platinum and gold, with an estimated $4 billion worth of metals in-pit. Grid sees potential to expand the resource to 80-100Mt, which would make it attractive for a major mining company to get involved.Upcoming catalysts for MM include exploration results from drilling planned for late summer/fall 2024. Grid will also look to bring in a strategic partner to help develop the asset once it reaches critical mass. The company's projects are located in Manitoba, one of the world's top mining jurisdictions. Manitoba boasts excellent infrastructure, a streamlined permitting process, and a long history of mining. This combination of asset quality and jurisdiction safety is a key competitive advantage for Grid.Importantly, Grid's assets are a fit for the times. The global transition to clean energy is driving unprecedented demand for critical minerals like lithium, nickel and copper. Localizing supply chains has become a priority for western governments and automakers. Grid aims to be part of the build-out of a North American battery metals supply chain to meet this need.Grid Metals currently has a market capitalization of just C$15 million. This valuation appears far too low based on the quality of the company's assets, the strength of its management team, and the significant upside potential offered by upcoming catalysts. As the company advances its projects and proves out their potential, there is strong potential for a re-rating of the stock. In summary, Grid Metals offers investors a unique way to play the critical minerals boom. With two quality assets in a top jurisdiction, a pragmatic development approach, and multiple near-term catalysts, the company is well positioned to create value in the rapidly growing battery metals space. As CEO Robin Dunbar stated, "The industry and market are going to wake up to this." Grid Metals may just be one of the best-kept secrets in the junior mining space, but it likely won't stay that way for long.View Grid Metals' company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/grid-metals-corpSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Interview with Brandon Smith, CDO of Grid Metals Corp. Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/grid-metals-grdm-advancing-lithium-project-in-manitoba-3260Recording date: 29th November 2023Fast-Tracking Lithium Production by 2025 in Manitoba's Fertile GroundGrid Metals is advancing its Donner Lake lithium project at a rapid clip, targeting production by 2025. This aggressive timeline is enabled by Manitoba's streamlined permitting and access to regional infrastructure, including an existing mill just 35km from the project. By refurbishing the True North gold mill for lithium processing, Grid avoids building a new dedicated facility and capex exceeding $300 million.Instead, the company estimates a modest $50 million investment—including ample contingencies—could see Donner Lake transformed into a 75,000 tonne per annum lithium mine. The site already hosts a 7 million tonne resource at 1.39% lithium, with expansion potential at depth. Completed economic studies will shed further light on project returns, but early indications point to robust economics.Notably, Grid Metals has signed an MOU with nearby specialty metals producer Tanco to assess the processing of Donner Lake material. However, the company suggests tolling economics are currently more favorable with the True North option. Either way, this infrastructure access is unique in the lithium development landscape.Permitting is another critical advantage in Manitoba, where Grid Metals is modeling its application after a predecessor mine that went from discovery to permits in under three years. Approval for Donner Lake is expected in early 2025, dovetailing with feasibility study completion to allow project financing and development for targeted production that year.Major global forces support Grid's ambitions, with surging electric vehicle demand supercharging lithium consumption. While prices have recently softened, forecast tightening supplies bode well for producers coming online in the next few years. Donner Lake's convenient location also unlocks government support, with Grid Metals estimating 30-40% of capex recoverable through grants and tax credits. With much of the de-risking work already done courtesy of accessible infrastructure and geoscience data, Donner Lake is primed to realize substantial returns as the battery revolution gathers momentum. Grid metyals offers investors a smart way to ride the lithium wave.—View Grid Metals' company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/grid-metals-corpSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com
The Donner Party's tragic journey west ended in disaster when an early winter trapped them in the Sierra Nevada in 1846. Pioneers were forced to camp at Donner Lake as massive storms blocked the mountain passes with snow. Meteorologist Matt Monroe describes the unrelenting conditions the group faced, from freezing cold to dwindling supplies. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The Donner Party faces another punishing trip across a desert before it finally reaches the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the border between Nevada and California. The party has lost a ton of time, but the travelers still believe they can make it over the mountains and into central California before winter. They make it as far as Truckee Lake – now Donner Lake – before they become trapped by blizzards. In 2020, Harrison Biehl bought his first mountain bike and immediately put his mind in the track, progressively doing bigger and bigger rides. In summer 2022, he successfully completed his first “Everesting” mission - repeating the same climb until reaching 29,032 feet of elevation gain. As a fundraiser for TAMBA, Harrison tackled Stanford Rock trail on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe and completed the mission in under 24 hours. In the afterglow, tragedy struck when his close friend Joe Fazzio took his own life a week before Christmas. To honor Joe's life and bring awareness to mental health, Harrison partnered with High Fives Foundation and launched the Pedal for Positivity. His new mission; “Trench to Everest” - climbing 65,099 feet - the elevation difference between the lowest point on earth, the Marianas Trench, to the highest, Mount Everest. In the dynamic realm of lithium mining, leaders like Robin Dunbar of Grid Metals, Jeffrey Wilson of Eureka Lithium, and Stephen Hanson of ACME Lithium stand out. Grid Metals, situated in southeastern Manitoba's Bird River greenstone belt, controls prized high-grade lithium pegmatites at Donner Lake and Falcon West, with a strategic advantage given their closeness to the Tanco mine, one of Canada's two lithium producers. Their journey doesn't end with lithium; their Ni-Cu-PGM-Co project, Makwa-Mayville, is also generating significant interest. Eureka Lithium, on the other hand, stands as a dominant force in Quebec's Nunavik region. They hold vast projects in emerging areas like Raglan West, Raglan South, and New Leaf Lithium Camps, and have ties to the illustrious prospector Shawn Ryan. The territory they oversee is mineral-rich, housing two active nickel mines with invaluable deep-sea port access. Meanwhile, ACME Lithium, backed by a team of industry veterans, is laser-focused on exploring and developing battery metal projects. Their expansive interests range from Nevada's Clayton Valley and Fish Lake Valley to sites in southeastern Manitoba and northern Saskatchewan. Join us for a deep dive into the innovative endeavors, hurdles, and openings these trailblazers navigate in the fast-evolving lithium sector. Subscribe for a deeper look into the multifaceted world of mining!

In the previous episode [The Donner Party Part 1] Dawn and her guest, Andy Kraft climbed aboard with The Donner Party wagon-train as they begin their ill-fated journey West. We met some of the most prominent individuals including George Donner - after whom the sad collective is named. Also James Reed, who tragically murdered his friend, John Snyder and was subsequently banished. He left, promising his wife and children he would do everything he could to be reunited and save them.00:05:30 - When we left off, The Donner Party had just reunited with the hero, C.T. Stanton - a single, childless man who had ridden ahead of the party months earlier to get help and supplies. His return provided much needed food and comfort, but it proved to be yet another nail in the coffin as it delayed their attempt to cross the summit before a huge snow storm. 00:11:07 - After several attempts to cross the summit with the mules, the Party realizes that they simply cannot make the passing the snow. Instead, they will be slaughtered in the morning, the meat prepared - and then they're all going out on foot before the snow comes... but that very night a snow storm begins that lasts 8 days. The animals are dead and lost beneath the snow and everyone is suddenly oh-so-much more desperate. They're divided into two camps about seven miles apart from one another. Sixty are at Truckee Lake - nine men over eighteen, twelve women, and twenty-nine were children, six of whom were toddlers or younger. The other camp, at Alder Creek, has twenty-one people: six men, three women, and twelve children in all. 00:17:38 - Realizing that the situation was going to lead to inevitable starvation, they decided that the strongest individuals among them would make snowshoes, and attempt to walk to Sutter's Fort in California. If they could make it, they would raise the alarm and return with help. Some call them "The Snowshoe Party", others "The Forlorn Hope". There were fifteen of them: five women, nine men and one twelve-year old boy. 00:29:52 - It has been mutually determined among the members of The Forlorn Hope that starvation was imminent and that 'should one of them die, the others might live.' They were the first among The Donner Party to resort to cannibalism when: "“The men finally mustered up the courage to approach the dead”.00:37:07 - BREAK - Check out the podcast Story Worthy by Christine Blackburn. 00:38:20 - The First Relief Party arrives at Donner Lake on February 1847. It's bad. Of the sixty-five people who were left there when The Forlorn Hope left (two months prior), thirteen people have died, leaving about thirty survivors. They have not *apparently* started eating each other yet. Twenty-one leave with the rescuers: six adults, six children under ten-years-old, nine children who are ten-fourteen-years-old.They have a hell of a trek to safety and three die on the way back. One adult (John Denton), Ada Keseberg (3), William Hook (12, fatally gorges himself when they finally get to food.0042:30 - Incredibly James Reed meets the First Relief Party as they're returning and not only reunites with his wife, but provides them much-needed supplies after their caches were destroyed. He then continues back down to Donner Lake only to discover a scene significantly more disastrous than when last they were contacted. The Second Relief takes with them seventeen people: three adults, two teenagers, and twelve children between nine and one-year-olds. On the way back, three people die, two five-year-old children and a forty-year-old woman. Most of the children are carried out by one guy - John Stark. 01:02:14 -After two more relief parties, the last group to go to Donner lake, are less of a relief, than a 'retrieve'. They arrive on April 10th - It had been a month since the 3rd Relief had left. The first thing they see - there are bodies and body parts EVERYWHERE: Skulls, legs, fragments. Mrs. Murphy is lying there with a leg sawed off and the saw still lying next to her. Mrs. Donner is dead and partly devoured in Keseberg's Cabin, but he is gone and they see a fresh set of tracks leading to the Donner Cabin. Soon, Keseberg is found walking back carrying much of the Donner's money. 01:06:06 - Here is the final head-count (so to speak) of the survivors and victims of the Party: Of the 87 who took the notorious Cut-off, about 42 died. What do you think of those odds?---HAPPY NEW YEAR! Next new episode: February 1st, 2023**We are moving. It's just across town - not as harrowing as The Donner Party move - but a big ol' time-sucking pain in the ass so we're taking January off. ---Instagram/Facebook - @hilfpodcastEmail - hilfpodcast@gmail.comWe thank you for your shares, rates, reviews and foul-mouth appreciation.
Dawn's guest is actor and writer, Andy Kraft. He is a longtime friend and colleague - together they've done everything from romantic comedies on screen, to portraying water droplets on stage. Andy can be seen in countless commercials, episodes of television (including the final episode of Brooklyn nine-nine) and is the hand up the bum of some of your favorite puppets!00:07:44 - Andy explains why he chose the subject of The Donner Party. His total ignorance of the subject (is it NOT the Dahmer Party?) ultimately made it the HILF of the day and, of course, Dawn loves a History Virgin. 00:13:36 - The Donner Party began, as almost all wagon trains going West did at the time - on the Oregon Trail. This infamous trail inspired a similarly infamous game that was very popular in the mid 80's... if you didn't die, you won! But you probably died... There is a new version of the game for Switch, if you can believe it.00:18:53 - The Who-is-who of The Donner Party: We are introduced to the people who begin with the wagon train in Missouri, what brought them there, and what there expectations were going forward. Everything starts out fairly well with Mrs. Donner even writing a letter home that says, "“Indeed, if I do not experience something far worse than I have yet done, I shall say the trouble is all in getting started.” 00:23:50 - Because things are going so well as they set out, the Donner Party begins to take interest in a rumor of a shortcut. The so-called Hastings Cut-off, purported by legendary frontiersman, Lansford Hastings, proves a tempting option. Ultimately they take a vote and about 90 of the party take the road oh-so-much less traveled.BREAK 00:32:07 - In October of 1846, The Donner Party finds themselves weeks behind schedule and with an increasingly hazardous route unfolding before them. After cutting paths through thick brush and hard terrain, they then face the crossing of The Great Salt Dessert - and they already are running out of food and water. See the map!00:37:04 - In light of how FUCKING BAD things are going, the group selects two individuals, Stanton and McCutchen, to ride ahead to California to alert them to their plight and possibly bring back help and supplies. Shortly after they leave, things progressively get worse for everybody - and then there is the first murder. 00:39:39 - Dawn gives the details of the murder of John Snyder and the resulting exile of James Reed.00:53:38 - There is the first death by starvation/exposure (Hardcoop) and one disappearance and suspected murder (Wolfinger). Just as the party is beginning to really accept the possibility that all is lost, Stanton returns! Not only does he have much-needed supplies, but he is also in the company of two Indian guides to lead them the rest of the way. The Donner Party takes a sigh of relief - but it turns out the worst had only just begun...---Come back for the thrilling conclusion the HILF of the The Donner Party - it will be an episode you can really sink your teeth into. ---Instagram/Facebook - @hilfpodcastEmail - hilfpodcast@gmail.comWe thank you for your shares, rates, reviews and foul-mouth appreciation.

In this special podcast episode, we're reading fromchapter 3 of our book Master Your Mindpower in orderto show you how we learned to embrace the suck to develop mental toughness like never before. But let us tell you something before...Back in 2007, we learned the true depths of leaping out of our comfort zones when we both committed to a triathlon. It took place on the banks of the freezing cold Donner Lake just below the summit between Lake Tahoe and Sacramento, California. We had been training for this triathlon for over a year, but to say that we were unprepared would be a vast understatement. Despite our intense training regiment, nothing could prepare us for leaping into this unknown.==========================

After the seven survivors of the Forlorn Hope Party broke through to Johnson Ranch on January 18th, 1847 after a harrowing 33-day trek where 8 members perished, relief parties were mustered to try and retrieve the remaining survivors of the Donner Party. The first of four relief parties departed Johnson Ranch on February 4th, 1847, with mules and provisions. As the frigid winter and rugged Sierra terrain persisted, their numbers dwindled to seven men who summoned their determination and humanity, eventually reaching the buried cabins on the edge of Donner Lake on February 18th, 1847. Upon arriving they encountered silence and saw nothing but snowdrifts 20 feet deep. A lone dark figure emerged from the snow and in a frail women's voice said, “Are you men from California or do you come from heaven?” Thus began the rescue of the Donner Party. The Relief Parties are a lesser-known part of the Donner saga. The grit and selflessness of these men who risked their lives for strangers is a tale of inspiration and intrigue. Bob Crowley, Tim Twietmeyer, Jennifer Hemmen, and Elke Reimer explored the multi-dimensional persona of each of the relief party members; their history, character, and motivation. With this, they linked together the relief route based on historic records. To honor the true grit and selflessness of the relief parties the Donner Relief Expedition will set off on February 14, 2022, from Johnson Ranch on mules and foot and head east over the Sierra Nevada to the Donner State Park Museum exactly 175 years to the day of the arrival of the 1st Relief Party. Imagine if you were stranded in the mountains over an entire winter. People all around you are dying of starvation and exposure. How desperate would you have to be to eat the remains of your loved ones? The Donner Party, was a group of American pioneers who migrated to California in a wagon train from the Midwest. Delayed by a multitude of mishaps, they spent the winter of 1846–1847 snowbound in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Some of the migrants resorted to cannibalism to survive, eating the bodies of those who had succumbed to starvation, sickness, and extreme cold. Cheryl will tell you about how the party was trapped by exceptionally heavy snow in the Sierra Nevada, and, when food ran out, some members of the group reportedly resorted to cannibalism of those already dead. It was the worst disaster of the overland migration to California. Donner Lake and Donner Pass, California, are named for the party. Rob follows with equally outlandish tales of people who didn't listen to right advice or made very bad decisions along the way. By doing so they earned themselves a Darwin award

They plan to dive into Truckee today for a quick resupply, and head down to the scenic road past Donner Lake to hitch into town. A smoothie and a bagel in town sets them up for the rest of their chores, and they start to plan further ahead as their days can be more structured now that the trail is consistent and flatter. People are everywhere in Truckee as it's still the holiday weekend, and it's evident that this area is popular for outdoor pursuits. Waiting awhile for a hitch back to trail two cars come along at once! Back on trail through beautiful woodland the walking is good, but Molly feels the whole pizza she had for lunch swelling her tummy. They reach Interstate 80, where the trail goes underneath the road through two tunnels, each of which is a flowing river of snowmelt! Climbing uphill after that icy-cold experience they emerge from the forest with fantastic views across the landscape from Castle Pass. Deciding to finish early they set up camp with the vista spread out before them. A new plan is developed for the rest of Northern California in order to maintain a good average daily mileage, and resupply points are earmarked for the days ahead. Join Molly & Ethan as they move north from the Lake Tahoe area and begin the final stretch towards Oregon... Episode 88 of Trail & Errors.
On November 8th, the Camp Fire in northern California grew rapidly and burned through 10,000 acres in under 90 minutes. The rate at which the fire spread was unprecedented which is tragically why the death toll is the highest in history. It destroyed more structures than the previously worst 6 wildfires combined. That's more than 17,000 structures with over 12,000 of those being people’s homes. Those who survived the evacuation in the town of Paradise and beyond lost everything and are now starting the unimaginable process of rebuilding. But in the darkness of the tragedy has risen a call to action from the nearby communities and around the world. Countless donations have been made for the victims, and the volunteer efforts to sort through these donations has been unbelievable. For people who cannot help in person, monetary funds have been established, including one called the Donner Party 50k which was set up by my guest today, Jon Levitt, along with friends. When the 50k he trained for was cancelled due to the poor air quality in San Francisco, a group gathered at Donner Lake, near Lake Tahoe, to use their training and running community to raise money for the victims of the Camp Fire. So without further adieu, here is Jon with how that all came together
This week is another good one. Alex takes the Family up to Donner Lake for a nice reunion, he gets sick and watches movies and finds out Gronk is a wimp. Nothing can stop Midnight though, we keep it moving with a little politics golf.Back in the Gym, Guy, time to LEVEL UP!Brought to you by Silver Tongue Audio

You may also call me at (530) 582-6900 for a FREE home buying consultation to answer any of your real estate questions. What happened in our 2016 real estate market? Overall, more homes sold in 2016 than in 2015 and home sales went up by 15%. The average sales price is up 11%, and the median sales price is up 5% over the last year. These numbers can be deceiving because each neighborhood has its own dynamic. For example, in our more popular neighborhoods like Donner, Glenshire, Donner Lake, North Shore, and West Shore, we saw minimal growth of 1% to 3% in the median and average sales price. There were some interesting anomalies in our 2016 real estate market. “2016 saw some interesting real estate anomalies.”In Martis Camp, home sales doubled in 2016. However, the average sales price is actually down by 6%, and the median sales price is down 14%. In Squaw Valley, sales also doubled but the average sales price went up 7%. On the other hand, the median sales price went down by 4%. So, who were the winners in 2016? The neighborhood of Brockway Vista saw a 4% increase in the average sales price and a 14% increase in the median sales price. That’s the result of new streets and redevelopment in the downtown area. Brockway Vista also went down the most during the economic downturn; now, they have made a full recovery. Northstar also saw a significant increase in the average sales price—the average is actually up 46%! The median sales price jumped up even further, increasing by 63%. Why the huge increase? You can thank the new Mountainside development for that. If you haven’t been to Northstar lately, there are some incredible new homes out there that are definitely worth taking a look at. The question is, will Northstar overshadow Martis Camp? Only time will tell. If you are interested in the specific numbers for your neighborhood, click here for a full report.
