Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com It's well known that Harley has been struggling for some time and sales have been declining steadily year to year. There’s just not a big demand for the bigger expensive touring bikes that make up the core of its model line. The company’s loyal base of older customers, who drove a Harley revival during the 1980s and 1990s, is aging and purchasing fewer new motorcycles. Patron member Michael Rubinson of Law Abiding Biker Media listened to podcast episode #241 titled, "Harley-Davidson End Times! CEO Levatich Quits?". We talked in that episode about Harley trying to draw a new younger generation of riders and where they are failing. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Harley has been trying to reach a broader customer base as it’s certainly important to their future existence. So, back in July 2018, Harley announced its “More Roads to Harley” strategy. If you haven’t already, you should really get up to speed and watch my video on CEO Matthew Levatich quitting and the current state of the Motor Company. Harley is trying to be innovative with the late 2019 announcement of the Pan America Adventure Bike and the Bronx Streetfighter. These two bikes are scheduled to go into production later this year. I’m personally most excited to see the Pan America but I fear as Harley’s first adventure bike it will be way overpriced for most riders like their first electric motorcycle, the Livewire. The images of these two new leaked models first appeared in a document released to Harley-Davidson investors in late September 2019 but since then Harley has filed design patents with the European Union Intellectual Property Office. Both the Pan America and Bronx will have the Revolution Max engine and it seems that the same engine will be carried over to the two newest models we talk about in this podcast episode. First Leaked Harley is a Flat Tracker: This new model seems to be loosely modeled off the XG750R Flat Tracker and it can be seen in the shape of the tank, the seat, and the two stacked exhaust pipes on the right side. It appears the script on the air cleaner housing reads “975", indicating it’s the same version of the engine used in the Bronx Streetfighter. That means a claimed 115 hp and 70 pound-feet. The flat tracker's chassis appears similar to the Bronx, with the same forks and Brembo front brakes but the tubular, triangulated swingarm is different. One thing that really stands out on this bike for me is the triangulated tubing coming off the left side to situate the signals, brake light, and license plate. And that square style headlight looks cool. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Second Leaked Harley is a Cafe Racer: Like the flat tracker, the cafe racer seems to be based on the 975cc Revolution Max engine from the Bronx. It's worth noting that this cafe racer model is likely to appear later this year as a 2021 model. The chassis is similar to the Bronx and the flat tracker and it has the same front suspension and brakes. But, it looks like it gets its own simple straight design swingarm. A more notable item on this bike is the rear twin shocks rather than the more traditional rising-rate mono-shock. The cafe racer is a new arena for Harley-Davidson to enter. Although the bike is definitely a cafe racer, it sill has a very Harley flare to it. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Some of the other notable items on this leaked Harley is the small minimal nose cowl that looks like the one on my Dyna Low Rider. The gas tank shape has a hint of Sportster and the seat looks like that on the XR1200. New Free Video Mentioned: Sony XAV-AX7000 vs Harley Boom Box GTS! Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE! Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com There is an ongoing oil sumping issue with some Harley-Davidson motorcycles equipped with the 2017-2019 Milwaukee-Eight motor and you should definitely be aware of so you know if your bike is affected. Oil sumping or wet sumping is a condition where oil, instead of returning to the oil tank, builds up in the crankcase and cam gearcase, causing excessive friction and power loss. Sumping is when the suction side of the oil pump does not remove enough oil from the crankcase. When the flywheels rotate in the oil they turn it into an aerated state. Thus, oil gets trapped in the crankcase and does not return to pump. The Milwaukee-Eight oil sumping issue is because the stock oil pump may be inadequate. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE If you ride short distances, you'll likely never experience the sumping issue. After a shorter ride, the bike will build up oil in the crankcase and then you'll shut the bike down. On the next startup and idle, the crankcase will empty and you'll never become aware of the issue. The Milwaukee-Eight oil sumping issue happens over time, so if you ride harder on those twisties or ride long distances at higher speeds on the highways, the issue is more likely to reveal itself. It's during these times the oil can build up in the crankcase. The Milwaukee-Eight oiling system requires a fine balancing act to maintain the correct amount of oil pressure, oil volume and scavenging to eliminate wet-sumping while maintaining quiet operation and optimized power production without generating excessive heat. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Consequences: Oil sumping will result in excessive friction and power loss to your Harley M8 engine. Excess crankcase oil is whipped into a froth of air and oil by the flywheel. This condition is called oil aeration. Aerated oil makes scavenging much more difficult and can hinder the return of oil from the rocker box area. The combination of these conditions often results in oil being forced out the head breathers, air cleaner contamination, oil leaks, loss of oil supply, lifter clatter, premature component wear, and potential engine failure. Symptoms: You may get excessive oil blowback from the crank breathers inside your air intake. You may see excessive oil splattered along the right side of your bike while riding hard or long distances. Your air filter may become saturated with engine oil. You may feel your bike has slightly less powerful as it would on a normal hot day. But eventually, the oil in the crankcase builds to the point that the crank is sloshing through the oil as it gets deeper in the crankcase. Eventually, the crankcase fills leaving massive rotational resistance. Efforts to accelerate are met with no response. The engine simply can’t rapidly change rotational speed because of the resistance. Engine failure comes from there being so much oil build up in the crankcase, that the pan is starved leaving no oil to be pumped to the top end. The engine also overheats just from all the resistance of too much oil in the crankcase. The engine begins to overheat and components such as bearings, lifters, and worse, begin to fail. The rider will never see an oil light which is quite disturbing and a significant design flaw. The fix: Installing a new 2020 Harley oil pump is the only fix, which now comes stock on those 2020 and newer Harley models with the Milwaukee-Eight motor. Clearly Harley is aware of the oil sumping issue, which is why they re-designed the oil pump for the 2020 models and factory install it. The dealerships will not say much about oil sumping in general and will just recommend you upgrade to the new 2020 oil pump for "better oil control and better oiling performance." At your expense of course. By installing the new 2020 Harley oil pump you'll avoid the Milwaukee-Eight oil sumping issue altogether. Harley OEM oil pump kits: Oil cooled M8-HD Part# 62400238 Twin-Cooled HD Part# 62400247 Note: There are some aftermarket companies also making a replacement oil pump that provide even better oil performance. **If you appreciate all the free content we put out to help the biker community, please consider purchasing an aftermarket oil pump through our affiliates. No additional cost to you, but if you click through and make a purchase we do get a small commission. It definitely helps!! Get an aftermarket oil pump: Revzilla | J&P Cycles | Amazon Oil pump changes: The big changes to this new 2020 oil pump are in the scavenger gears. The original/faulty oil pump had a 10 tooth scavenger gear and the new oil pump comes with an 8 tooth scavenger gear, which will scavenge more oil out the M8. The new oil pump body was made to size for the smaller scavenger gear set. The older faulty oil pump was designed to scavenge 60% from the cam cover area and 40% from the crankcase. The new 2020 oil pump is a 50/50 split when scavenging oil. New Free Video Mentioned: Harley Boom Box GTS Will Have Android Auto in 2020 & Upgrade Your System Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE! Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com I recently received an email from Harley-Davidson. The email said, "watch hours of video footage on Harley-Davidson TV. We're kicking it off with a never before seen documentary about Wille G Davidson." So, I headed over to check it out. I think Harley-Davidson is trying new things with the recent resignation of CEO Matthew Levatich. For years now, the Motor Company has been struggling to find its way into the future. Listen in to this podcast episode to get all the details. As usual, and with the new Harley TV, the company decided to try to do things on their own instead of going to where their core and prospective customers are actually hanging out. They created their own Harley TV website page instead of going to YouTube with the new content. Motorcyclists are already on YouTube, which has a great algorithm for suggesting videos to viewers. YouTube, owned by Google, is the second-largest search engine in the world. Harley would have gotten a ton more views and engagement on YouTube because everyone is already there. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE I'm not trying to be too negative here and the few programs that are on Harley TV are actually interesting. However, there is a schedule like you'd see on cable TV and often they claim it's "live". But it's not, and the same programs and content just repeat day after day. The content is not even on-demand like YouTube where you can pick where and when you want to view it. You have to wait for a certain time to watch a rerun on Harley TV, and that won't cut it these days with all the on-demand services. In my opinion, Harley TV is something that may have worked for them 10 years ago. The entire platform is really clunky right now and I see daily changes and issues. The menus don't even work correctly and each day I try them I get taken somewhere different. Many times the videos won't even play. It seems Harley rolled this out well before it was ready as they often do with things. In my opinion, Harley TV will likely fizzle out over time and it seems it already is. I just can't see bikers remembering to go over to an entirely different platform to routinely check in on Harley TV. Most bikers just don't have time for that and will forget it. Us bikers already on enough content platforms we're on. Harley TV would need to have some amazing content that was constantly new for bikers to consistently stray from on-demand platforms such as YouTube or Netflix. With all that said, I hope the best for Harley TV and I hope they can get things ironed out over on the website so it actually works. The following is taken from a January 10, 2020 press release. Harley-Davidson Motor Company (NYSE:HOG) and Tuscany Motor Co. will introduce the first Harley-Davidson branded GMC pickup in history at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona in Quarter 1 of 2020. Only 250 Harley-Davidson branded GMC Sierra trucks will be available through select authorized GMC/Tuscany dealers in North America. The new Harley GMC pickup includes over 65 edition-specific components that make the 2020 model truck distinctly Harley-Davidson. They say the styling was inspired by the famous Harley-Davidson Fat Boy model. It appears Tuscany will provide the GMC Sierra and manufacture the interior and exterior components under Harley-Davidson’s direction. The 2020 Harley-Davidson GMC will be available for delivery to the retail public at select authorized GMC dealers beginning February 2020. The new Harley GMC pickup has an MSRP of $94,995. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com We upgraded a 2016 Ultra-Limited that had the older Harley-Davidson Boom Box Infotainment 6.5 GT to the new Boom Box GTS, which came out on the 2019 and newer Harley touring models. We filmed the install and will release that video on our Y0uTube channel, so get subscribed right away. (see our install video) Converting to the newer Harley Boom Box Infotainment GTS System: As of November 2019, Harley-Davidson made it possible to upgrade your older system to the new 2019 Boom Box GTS on those 2014-2018 touring models. Visiting Harley's website, it seems they are marketing and describing this conversion kit more towards upgrading from the smaller 4.3 non-touchscreen unit to the new GTS unit but you can upgrade from either the smaller 4.3 unit or the larger 6.5 GT unit. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE For 14-18 Harley models, they state that an additional USB connector needs to be purchased for around $35-$50 but you can't even find the part on their own website at the time of this article. Further, we found during our install that it's not even required. This USB connector is the one that plugs into the rear of the Boom Box unit and it is already inside your jukebox compartment where you can plug in your smartphone or USB drive. We just used the USB connector that's already there instead of installing a new one and all works perfectly. And that goes for all the other new cables that come in the box with the new Boom Box GTS such as am/fm antenna a GPS antenna. We didn't use any of the new cables and used the ones already routed and installed and all works perfectly. Also, be aware that if you have XM radio and have installed the module on the rear of your older 6.5 GT unit you don't need a new one. Just remove your XM radio module and install it on the new Harley Boom Box GTS unit and all will work fine. Check out all of our very helpful Boom Box Tutorial Videos for 2014 to present units! Boom Box GTS Unit P/N 76000374A Converting to a Sony XAV-AX7000 instead: Darryl “Squid” Barnes here at Law Abiding Biker Media dug in deep to find out everything you'll want to know if you're considering ditching your Harley Boom Box for the Sony XAV-AX7000 unit. Listen in to this podcast episode as I ask Darryl all the questions you'll want to know. Note: The Sony XAV-AX7000 is designed for use in a car. It was never designed to be used on a motorcycle. The pros of the Sony XAV-AX7000 Harley Boom Box Replacement: The replacement Sony system has standard am/fm and it has both Apple Car Play and Android Auto baked in and they will function if your smartphone is plugged into one of the USB ports. It has a full 7″ touchscreen and is very sleek. You can buy a XAV-AX7000 bundled kit from certain companies that will allow it to install and function when installed on your Harley-Davidson. With Apple Car Play and Android Auto, you'll be able to use Apple Maps and Google Maps for navigation. Another nice feature is that with the Sony XAV-AX7000 you'll maintain your factory handlebar toggle control functions but with several limitations. Note: If you appreciate all the information we provide and to help us continue our mission to help as many bikers as we can worldwide, consider purchasing a Sony XAV-AX7000 through our affiliate link below. No additional cost to you, but we get a small commission if you click through and make a purchase. CHECK OUT A SONY XAV-AX7000 HERE Further, the Sony replacement plays FLAC files on USB drives and includes Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming. You can also jam to your favorite playlists on Pandora or Spotify if you use those instead of your pre-loaded Apple or Android music. The unit is also compatible with a SiriusXM satellite radio tuner. AND, it comes with a 1-year warranty. The Sony unit also has dual USB inputs and has 45 watts RMS per channel and five 5-volt preamp outputs. The cons of the Sony XAV-AX 7000 Harley Boom Box Replacement: The Sony XAV-AX7000 is not a marine-grade like the Boom Box system is. So, you'd need to be careful if riding in heavy rains and when washing your Harley. Additionally, you won't see your EITMS on/off-screen or oil pressure like on the Boom Box. You'll also only get limited functionality with the use of your control toggles. The XAV-AX7000 has a microphone included with a wire that you normally route inside a quiet car. Using this microphone for voice commands or phone calls with the wind and noise would be less than practical on a motorcycle. The XAV-AX7000 only has a handsfree profile "HFP" and not a headset profile "HSP". That means you cannot pair a wireless Bluetooth headset directly with the unit, but you can pair your smartphone with it because of the HFP profile. This is similar to the Boom Box system but you can add the additional wireless headset interface module "WHIM" to get the HSP profile. There is no ad-on for the Sony unit to get the HSP profile. So, you'll need to pair your wireless Bluetooth headset directly with your smartphone and then have your smartphone plugged in via the USB port to use Apple Car Play or Android Auto. You can then give commands to your phone which will then bring things up on the Sony unit. Further, because the unit lacks the HSP profile, you'll lose your Harley intercom functionality and it's not CB radio compatible. Remember, that the Sony XAV7000 unit was made for a car and that's why you need to buy a kit or bundle of things to make this conversion possible. There are companies around that sell the bundle. Obviously, the Sony XAV-AX7000 is a much cheaper option than the Boom Box GTS if you don't care about the above-mentioned items and limitations. Conclusion: Now that you're educated on the Harley Boom Box GTS upgrade vs. the Sony XAV-AX7000 conversion, you have a decision to make on which will work best for you. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Having ridden street bikes for many years now, I wanted to also get into adventure and off-road riding. So, after much thought and research, I selected the Kawasaki KLR 650 as my first adventure bike. I found a nice barely used 2018 KLR for sale and bought it in the fall of 2019. Oscar and I drove from Washington to Oregon to pick up this little gem that looked like it just came off the showroom floor with only 109 miles on it. Check out my video titled, "I Just Bought & Rode My First Adventure Motorcycle? Am I Hooked?" The Kawasaki KLR had a long run from 1987-2018. Anyone who's been involved with any sort of adventure or dual-sport riding is very familiar with this bike and everyone has an opinion about it. The KLR clearly made it for so many years because so many riders liked it. There have probably been more international discovery rides taken by Americans riding a KLR than almost any other motorcycle. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The Kawasaki KLR was really thought as of the best all-around bullet-proof adventure bike for many years. I think it's safe to say that there are more aftermarket parts available for the KLR than any other bike in its class. Entire businesses have been built around making and selling parts for the KLR. Now that the KLR is not being produced, you'll have to look for a good used one. There will still be plenty of used KLR's for sale and there are still a few brand new 2018 models at select dealerships, but that is fading. Oh, and don't worry, you'll be able to get aftermarket parts for the KLR for many years to come. Imagine how many Kawasaki KLR's are still around after 32 model years of production. It will be interesting to watch and see if Kawasaki comes up with a replacement for the KLR to compete in this fast-growing category of lighter weight "do it all" dual-sport adventure bike. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Although the KLR's production run is over, it's not going anywhere in the adventure bike scene any time soon. I'll continue to enjoy and ride the heck out of mine! Listen in to this podcast as we get into depth about the KLR and its history and give some predictions for the replacement of the KLR. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Setting your motorcycle suspension sag by adjusting preload on your rear shocks is very important. It affects the geometry of your motorcycle and how it handles overall. This doesn't need to be a complicated process as many make it seem in other online videos and articles. We're here to break it down in simple terms for the everyday motorcycle enthusiast. (listen to this podcast episode to get all the details!) Setting sag just means that you are adjusting how much your bike lowers (sags) and rides in the rear when a rider, passenger, luggage or a combination is on the bike. The bike should only sag down so far and within a pre-determined range. Whether you're riding street, adventure, dual-sport, or dirt, setting motorcycle suspension sag is a universal process. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Most stock Harley-Davidson rear shocks have a pre-load adjuster knob and the owner's manual gives you load weight ratings and where you should set the preload. The air shock system on the Harley works the same by adding or removing air. If you install aftermarket shocks of any kind then you'll need to learn how to properly set motorcycle suspension sag. Finding your sag number: First, you'll need to know how much overall travel your particular motorcycle shock has. Most OEM or aftermarket Harley rear shocks have 3 in. of overall travel or 76 mm. The rule is that you should take that number and your target sag number should be 1/3 or around 30% of that number. So, 3" of travel x 30% equals around 1". So, in this case, you'll want your sag to be 1" or 25 mm. On my 2018 Kawasaki KLR 650, the rear shock is rated for 7.3 inches or 185mm of travel. So, 7.3" x 30% equals 2.19" or 55 mm. So, my target sag number for my KLR 650 should be 2.19" or 55 mm. Tip: I hate math and I'm always in a hurry so I use a Tusk Sliding Sag Scale instead of a standard tape measure. I simply set the sliding sag scale to zero when the weight is off the rear. Then, with the load on the rear of the bike, I can simply look at the sag scale measurement in inches or millimeters. No converting or subtraction! You can get a Tusk Slide Scale right in the Law Abiding Biker Store. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! How to measure your motorcycle suspension sag: Note: I'll explain below as if using a standard tape measure on not the easy to use slide sag scale. I like to start with no preload added on the rear suspension. Now, make a mark on your strut or rear fender with a marker or piece of tape. Then, lift the rear wheel off the ground, thus removing all weight from the rear shock. Now, measure from the center of the rear axle to the mark you made and note that measurement. Next, put the weight back on the rear wheel and shock. Put the rider on the bike and have them bounce a few times to settle the rear shock. Measure again from the center of the rear axle to your mark and document that number. Now, subtract the second measurement from the first and that is where your sag is. Adjusting your sag: Note: We'll use the above Harley sag number of 1" for demonstrative purposes here. If your measurement was over 1" then you are sagging too much and you need to add preload. By adding preload you are compressing the spring and raising the rear of the motorcycle. If your measurement fell short of 1" then you have too much preload on the shock and you need to remove preload, thus lowering the rear of the motorcycle. Repeat the second measurement as you add and remove preload until you hit your target sag number. You can't get to your proper target sag number: Note: We'll use the above Harley sag number of 1" for demonstrative purposes here. Let's say you are still at 1-1/4" even after you've added all the preload adjustment you can by compressing the spring and raising the rear of the bike. You simply can't get it to 1" because you can't add any more preload. This means your spring/shock is too soft and you should get a stiffer one. The flip side of that is let's say your measurement is only at 3/4" and you've added no preload. You can't add anymore sag to get to the 1" as adding preload would just raise the bike. You simply can't get the motorcycle to sag enough. This means your spring/shock is too stiff and you should get a softer one. Just understand that if you set your sag for a rider only and you're at the 3/4" then with a rider or luggage you'll likely be at your 1" sag. You need to take everything into account. You should measure motorcycle suspension sag for rider only, rider with passenger and with luggage. You measure the rear sag with the rider/passenger/luggage on the bike. Then, simply keep notes of where you should set your suspension preload adjuster for each load. This way you can avoid having to measure again every time you have a passenger or luggage. Preload adjusters: Different motorcycle shocks have different styles of preload adjusters. Many aftermarket shocks have a collar you can turn by hand or a system where you use a spanner wrench. My KLR has a 12mm bolt you can turn with a socket. New Free Video Mentioned: Video-How to Bleed & Flush Harley-Davidson Clutch System Fluid Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE! Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com I'm excited to announce that on March 11, 2020, at 6:15 pm (PST) the Law Abiding Biker YouTube Channel hit 100k subscribers! I knew it was getting close, so I pulled up a website that counts YouTube channel, real-time subscribers. But the catch is that the counter only turns at intervals of 100. That means the channel hit 99,900 and I had no idea when it'd actually turn 100k. I was recording a quick video with my computer screen in the background hoping I could capture it and I did! At the very moment it turned 100k, I was recording. I posted a quick video of that and my excitement and posted it on our Facebook Page and Twitter at the time. Official website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Matthew Levatich, the CEO of Harley-Davidson since 2015, stepped down recently. As he left, Levatich said, “I am proud of what we have achieved during my time as CEO, in one of the most challenging periods in our history.” It's well known that Harley has been struggling for some time and sales have been declining steadily year to year. There’s just not a big demand for the bigger expensive touring bikes that make up the core of its model line. The company’s loyal base of older customers, who drove a Harley revival during the 1980s and 1990s, is aging and purchasing fewer new motorcycles. Because the company needed to do something quickly, they selected Levatich as CEO back in 2015 to try to save the company. Levatich joined the company back in 1994 and served as a chief operating officer from 2009 through 2015 prior to becoming CEO. So, he had a good background and knowledge within the company. SEE VIDEO: Harley-Davidson End Times! CEO Matthew Levatich Quits What former Harley CEO Levatich did in 5 years Levatich authorized dozens of new models for both the U.S. and foreign markets. Harley certainly sees growth opportunities in the foreign markets and has clearly been targeting them. But that’s been tough because of competition from existing brands that are solid in those markets. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Levatich expanded the output of motorcycles overseas, looking for more customers, especially in Asia. But, the smaller motorcycles aimed at those markets are less expensive than the bigger touring Harley models that they rely on in the U.S. and that has hurt the company's overall sales revenue. He also tried to get the company into different markets such as the Adventure Riding with the Pan America, which is supposed to be released in 2020. And they created the Street Fighter to get into the sports bike market, but there’s no timeline on the release of that bike. And of course, Harley created their first-ever electric motorcycle named “LiveWire.” However, it had some major issues after launch and a recall on it’s charging system that didn't help its reputation. Additionally, Levatich attempted to offset declining sales with cost reductions. The company closed its Kansas City, Mo., assembly plant in 2019, Conducted several rounds of layoffs, and voluntary buyouts for employees. The company also shifted some of its productions overseas as well to avoid tariffs. And they took some consumer and political heat for doing such. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Levatich had a mission to attract new riders with their ridership classes, which are basically a driver’s ed class for new riders. These classes were not necessarily new, as these classes pre-dated Levatich, but the company just renewed its focus on promoting the classes. Measuring progress toward the ridership goal created tension between Harley managers and its dealers and investors and this festered over time. Dealerships complained the learn-to-ride classes were expensive and didn’t bring enough new motorcycle buyers. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com When Harley announced it's new updated Boom Box GTS Infotainment System it was equipping the 2019 & newer models with, they failed to make a kit so that owners of 2014 to 2018 Harley's could upgrade from the older version of the Boom Box system if they chose. This infuriated many Harley owners. A company called Soundz Bagger quickly came out with a harness that made the retro-fit possible but it cost a whopping $450. And then you'd have to spend an additional $2400 to purchase the Boom Box GTS unit. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this podcast, we explain the Harley-Davidson Reflex Defensive Rider System or "RDRS". This RDRS upgrade is a $995 option for the Harley touring line-up except for the Electra Glide Standard. Within this RDRS system are 6 components. Understand, that Harley has had a reflex linked braking system and anti-lock brakes on many touring models since the Rushmore bikes were released in 2014. The Harley linked braking system basically links the brakes so if a rider applies too much rear or front brake in an emergency the system takes over and applies the proper braking amounts to each wheel. See my YouTube video where I explain Harley RDRS! #1-Cornering Enhanced Electronic Linked Braking (C-ELB) This system is just like the reflex linked braking system but activates in an emergency situation in a corner. The front and rear brake systems apply the correct amount of braking for each wheel and take into account the lean angle of the motorcycle or the lateral acceleration of a trike. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE #2-Cornering Enhanced Antilock Braking System (C-ABS) This system takes into account the lean angle of a motorcycle or the lateral acceleration of a trike during a corner and applies the proper amount of anti-lock braking to the front and rear wheel. This keeps the wheels rolling and prevents an uncontrolled wheel lock during a corner. #3-Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System (C-TCS) This is designed to prevent the rear wheel from excessive spinning under acceleration when going straight or cornering. This can be great for wet weather or a sudden change of the riding surface. The rider can choose between two modes: Standard mode is for dry surfaces. Rain mode is for wet surfaces. And the C-TCS mode can be turned off if desired. This mode is tailored when cornering based on lean angle. #4-Drag-Torque Slip Control System (DSCS) and Cornering Enhanced Drag-Torque Slip Control System (C-DSCS) This is designed to reduce excessive rear-wheel slip under deceleration. Rear-wheel slip can happen during a quick downshift or decelerating on wet or slick roads. The system will adjust engine torque delivery to better match rear-wheel speed to road speed. This mode is tailored when cornering based on lean angle or trike lateral acceleration. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! #5-Vehicle Hold Control (VHC) This mode applies and holds brake pressure when activated. This will prevent the motorcycle from rolling after the brake controls have been released. This mode is for a situation such as being stopped on a hill and it will keep the bike from rolling. This system applies brake pressure until the rider turns the throttle and releases the clutch to pull away. The system may also be engaged when the motorcycle is stopped on a flat surface if the rider wants to maintain position without applying pressure to a front or rear brake. The system is activated when the rider momentarily applies extra pressure to either the front-brake hand lever or the rear-brake foot control after the motorcycle has come to a complete stop. An indicator light will illuminate when the system is activated. The VHC system is disengaged automatically as the rider begins to pull away from a stop, or if the rider applies and releases either brake control. #6-Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) This system simply alerts the rider to low tire air pressure. TPMS displays current front and rear tire pressure on the Boom! Box GTS screen or on the odometer on Road King models. This system is also available as a stand-alone accessory for 2020 Touring models equipped with original equipment or accessory wheels that accept a sensor. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com I have ridden street bikes and Harley-Davidson motorcycles for many years now. I still love street riding and cross country riding. However, I love all motorcycles and am also getting into adventure and/or dual-sport motorcycle riding in addition to street. I bought a Kawasaki KLR 650 for my first adventure motorcycle. I also took the KLR 650 out for the first time off-road for an afternoon and I tell you all about it and my experience. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Big Daddy is also on a microphone for this episode. He's been in the dual-sport/adventure motorcycle game much longer than I and brings some great knowledge to the table. He has had several dual-sport motorcycles. He has had a Kawasaki KLR 650 and now has a KTM, which he talks about. There are many things to consider upfront if you're thinking about getting into adventure motorcycle riding. It is really a booming sport right now and it seems the motorcycle manufacturers are battling it out to try and make the perfect bike. It's going to be exciting to see what they'll come out with over the next 5 years. Heck, even Harley-Davidson sees the writing on the wall and is trying to get in the game with their Pan America adventure motorcycle, which is rumored to be released to the public in 2020. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Big Daddy gives some great information on some of the more popular well known dual-sport motorcycles on the market and some of their specs. He also goes over the pros and cons of some of them. I researched for a long time before buying the Kawasaki KLR 650 for my first adventure bike. It really comes down to choosing what kind of riding you're planning on doing and then choosing a motorcycle that will best fit your needs. Of course, the price of an adventure motorcycle has much to do with it too. And you'll certainly want to consider what type of aftermarket parts are available for your motorcycle to make it your own and to fit your needs. That's just some of what we talk about in this episode and you'll need to listen in to get all the information. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Big Daddy Kane recently transitioned to a Harley trike after many years of riding on two wheels. Due to some back issues, it was becoming just too cumbersome lifting and moving a two-wheel Harley off the kickstand for him. This was not an easy transition for Big Daddy mentally as he did not see himself getting a trike at his current age. He thought, like many, that the switch may happen when he was a bit older. It was also quite a learning curve for him to learn to ride the trike after riding two wheels for so many years. He talks about his experience and what he's learned riding the trike. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE There are many things to consider for a rider considering moving to a trike. There are many aftermarket trike conversation kits for Harley. Or, you can just buy a Harley trike all setup already. There are pros and cons to many of these decisions of course. Big Daddy made some modifications right away that you'll want to know about. Harley trikes have become much more popular over the years and many are riding them even if they don't have a medical condition requiring it. Some riders just prefer the trike and there are some benefits to it over a two-wheel motorcycle. Big Daddy decided on a 2020 Harley Tri-Glide Ultra. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com There are many misconceptions about what to do when winterizing your motorcycle and we are going to clear it up in this podcast episode & article. It's actually a very easy process and easy to do. (Some links/pictures are affiliate links. No additional cost to you, but if you click through and make a purchase we get a small commission. It helps support us) Battery When winterizing your motorcycle, you don't need to remove the battery if you don't want to as it's just extra work. Unless there is no power where you store your motorcycle. Whether the battery is on or off the bike, make sure you plug the battery into a reliable “float” charger/maintainer/tender that reads feedback voltage from the battery and tops it off as needed. Don't use a “trickle” charger that constantly feeds a small amount of current to the battery nonstop as that will overcharge the battery. Check out this article and video I did on Lead Acid vs. Lithium-Ion batteries Get a battery tender here Don't start your engine up every now and then to "warm it up" after winterizing your motorcycle This is a very common mistake and we already released podcast episode #130 going over the reasons not to do this in detail. A cold start is hard on the engine. Understand, that if you aren’t running the engine under load up to full operating temperature, moisture condenses out of the air into places water doesn’t belong. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Unless you are planning on going for an actual decent ride to burn off moisture and charge that battery up, then you are better off just not starting it at all. Further, when it's cold outside the gasoline is less likely to evaporate. Your motorcycle purposely runs “rich” and compensates for this initially by adding more gasoline to the air-vapor mixture. That's the problem, you're actually putting extra fuel into the combustion chamber to make it burn and some of it can get onto the cylinder walls. Gasoline is a great solvent and it can actually wash the oil off the cylinder walls if you run your motor in those cold idle conditions for an extended period of time. Over time, that can have a detrimental effect on the lubrication and life of things like piston rings and cylinder liners. This can have a serious effect on the overall operating life of your motorcycle engine. Don't drain your fuel tank Leave the fuel tank full when winterizing your motorcycle and add a quality fuel stabilizer additive. If you empty the tank it's vulnerable to corrosion and dried out seals. For carbureted bikes, be sure to turn the petcock off and drain the carb bowls. Get fuel stabilizer here Check your antifreeze on water-cooled bikes Just check the anti-freeze and make sure that it is not all water or that it has too high of a watery consistency. You can use a simple affordable Anti-Freeze Hydrometer to test what temps your anti-freeze is good for. Get an Anti-Freeze Hydrometer here Use a good quality tarp or cover when winterizing your motorcycle. If storing your motorcycle indoors, then a good quality dust cover will do. If outside, then a completely waterproof and breathable motorcycle cover is recommended. Make sure the outdoor cover fits well and will not blow around in the wind and rub the paint on your bike. The cover needs to breathe to allow any moisture inside the cover to escape. Get a motorcycle cover here on Amazon Get a motorcycle cover here on Revzilla Tire pressure Before putting the motorcycle away, check the tires for proper inflation with a quality tire pressure gauge. Don't worry about flat spots forming on your tires from sitting. Rumors such as these are from the days of bias-ply car tires, which could form a flat spot overnight. Modern motorcycle tires will not form flat spots like that. Get this awesome tire pressure gauge in our online store here Oil Change If your regular oil change is due at the time you are winterizing your motorcycle then certainly change your oil & filter out before storing your motorcycle. But if it's not due, then just store it with the same oil in it. Certainly, change your oil if are going to store the motorcycle for a very long period of time & not just for the winter months. Check out our Harley, Indian, and Victory oil change and maintenance videos here Clean your bike Make sure you clean and detail your bike before you store it. This is a law-abiding biker club comprised of "Master Freemasons", which is the top degree earned within that organization. However, it's not good enough to just be a Freemason to join and be accepted into the motorcycle club. The Ruffian's Motorcycle Club has a traditional structure and you'll have to do some hanging around and prospecting before you may be voted in as a full member. The pillars of the Ruffian's Motorcycle Club are brotherly love, relief, and truth an each is explained on their website. On the back of the Ruffian's vests, they wear a top rocker stating their club name, a center patch/logo, and to the right of that, a number representing their place/lodge within the Freemasons. Printed on the Ruffian's Motorcycle Club website is the following: We are a group of Master Masons that ride motorcycles. Our goal is to spread brotherly love of all Masons wherever we ride. We strive to act as Masons, and treat all by the square and level. We attend charity events and by our actions spread the word of Masonry wherever we ride. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Listen in as I have special guest and patron member, Russell Roberts, on a mic. We go over the inside details of how the first-ever Law Abiding Biker member to member meetup and ride event went. Law Abiding Biker personnel were not involved with this event and this was patron members meeting patron members. This was all organized in the private Law Abiding Biker Facebook group that can only be accessed by patron members. This is a troll-free zone and is just but bikers helping and connecting with other bikers. There are all sorts of other small rides and meetups between members going on all the time in that group! There's no better time to get signed up as an Official Patron Member! SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE There was a group ride organized for the event on June 22, 2019, that went from North Carolina to Tennessee. Some highlights were riding the Great Smokey Mountains National Park and the Tail of the Dragon! Many stops were made along the way for bonding time amongst fellow bikers and photo opportunities. Many of those pics are posted in the private patron member-only Facebook group. The group ride ended at a private residence that had been rented in Tennessee. There was plenty of food, drinks, and activities. There was plenty of bonding time and many new friends were made at this event. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com I have Rick "Big Daddy" Kane in the studio for this episode. He owns both a Harley-Davidson Road Glide and an Indian Chieftain Limited. This year, Big Daddy decided to ride his Indian Chieftain on our 8-day, 7-State, 3,000-mile motorcycle trip instead of his Road Glide. He has ridden both these motorcycles on very long road trips now and is certainly qualified to give his opinion and thoughts. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE This is not an episode of Harley vs. Indian. Big Daddy is very unbiased and loves both his Harley Road Glide and Indian Chieftain, which is why he owns both of them. He has some good and bad things to say about both motorcycles. Neither bike is perfect and each offers some different things. It is really up to each rider to consider what is most important to you personally and then choose a touring bike. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Big Daddy goes over many things in this episode. He likes the stock rear suspension on the Indian Chieftain over the Harley Road Glide. But he likes the gas mileage of his Harley much better. He says his Indian is a real "gas hog". This is only one of many things he discusses. At the end of the episode, Big Daddy reveals his favorite motorcycle for riding long distance and locally, so you'll have to listen in to find out! Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Take a listen as I have a conversation with Anthony Price, executive director, of the Gold Star Ride Foundation. In 2018, Anthony did a single motorcycle ride spanning 18,000 miles, 44 states, 56 days of solid riding, and made contact with more than 60 Gold Star families. Anthony wrote a book after this ride named, Yours, Very Sincerely And Respectfully. The Gold Star Ride Foundation honors our nation's fallen heroes by taking care of their families. And we deliver the goods in person. And we go on bikes. In 2019, Anthony did 4 Rides, thus far, spanning 16 states, more than 20 days, nearly 10,000 miles, and has made contact with more than 30 families. Gold Star Families are defined as those who have lost a loved one who is serving or who has served in our armed forces. The loss of life does not have to be in combat or while deployed. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Anthony says they help Gold Star Families in many different ways and it's tailored to their personal situation and needs. This is why Anthony meets in person with the families, to get a real feel of the history and situation. It can be helping a child with college fees or stocking cabinets with groceries. The foundation is just there to help any way they can. Anthony says privacy of the families is of the utmost importance and the foundation does not reach out to them. The families must contact the foundation to get things started. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! The Gold Star Ride Foundation will actively support, comfort, and provide education benefits to Gold Star Families throughout the United States and will provide these things directly with personal visits via motorcycle; and we will support those other organizations that work to assist in these same activities. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Harley released their latest touring bike, the Electra Glide Standard, and kept it pretty low key. Harley is calling it the "dressed down dresser". It comes in at a cheaper option than the Street Glide, Road Glide or either of those "special" models. In this podcast episode, we break things down for you and what this new Harley is all about and who it may be for, so listen in. The 2019 Harley Electra Glide is basically a stripped down Street Glide and so that's what I am going to compare it to. The Harley Electra Glide starts at $18,999 and the basic Harley Street Glide starts at $21,289. The Street Glide special jumps up to a starting price tag of $27,089. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The 2019 Harley Electra Glide Standard is an awesome and capable touring bike. I say that because I ride a 2018 Police Electra Glide every day for work. It is a highly capable bike and I think it's great that Harley made a regular public model here in 2019. Understand that the Harley Electra Glide lacks a stereo/infotainment system of any kind and there is just an empty open storage box in that location. It doesn't come standard with ABS brakes but hey can be added for $795. I strongly suggest you add ABS brakes if nothing else as they save lives. It also lacks a two-up passenger seat and passenger pegs but anything can be added based on your needs. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! I'll also mention, the Electra Glide has smaller wheels and the tires are thicker than the Street Glide. The windshield is tall and plain and it has the regular square rear brake/signal setup. You can only get this bike in black. All these things separate its look from the Street Glide a bit. The 2019 Harley Electra Glide comes with the very capable Milwaukee-Eight 107 motor. Yes, it comes standard with cruise control, which is a must for any touring bike. Harley has recently been making moves to appeal to a broader demographic of riders. I believe the 2019 Harley Electra Glide Standard is an attempt to grab riders who may now be able to get into motorcycle touring at a lower price point. The 2019 Electra Glide Standard is a cheaper price and stripped down but a very capable Harley touring model. It will be interesting to see how well this bike sells. Remember, that for close to $2,000 more than the 2019 Harley Electra Glide Standard you can get a Street Glide Standard, which comes standard with ABS brakes, a basic version of the Boom Box radio (4.3 non-touch screen), two up passenger seat, passenger pegs, and paint options. But, everyone's budget is different, so the Electra Glide may be the best option for many. You can always build this bike up how you want it. Official Website: If you currently have or are considering purchasing a Harley-Davidson extended warranty plan at the time of purchase on a new bike with the Milwaukee-eight motor, you may reconsider now and into the future if things stay in their current state. If you are planning on adding specific performance upgrades, it may void both the two-year manufacturer's warranty and any 3 or 5-year Harley extended warranty you purchased, commonly referred to as an "extended service plan". These new strict warranty policies really only pertain to 2017 & newer Harley's with the Milwaukee-Eight motor. Those of us that own earlier models really haven't had to deal with what I'm about to reveal to you. (This is a guide only. Read the actual warranty paperwork for yourself.) SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE 60 Day Service & Warranty Registration (SWR) Let's first talk about the 60-day warranty rule, which is referred to as a "Sales & Warranty Registration" or "SWR". If within the first 60 days of your new Harley purchase you purchase Harley Screamin' Eagle parts and have them installed by a Harley dealership mechanic, all parts and labor will be covered during the two-year manufacturer's warranty and during any extended service plan you purchase. Also, all the parts and labor will be tracked under the vehicle identification number (VIN) and can be tracked for the life of the bike. It's as if the bike came from the factory with the parts. An example would be a Screamin' Eagle stage four install. You can often finance the Screamin' Eagle parts and labor at the time of purchase of your new Harley. Now, you can still purchase Harley Screamin' Eagle parts after that 60 days and have a dealership mechanic install them and your warranty will remain intact, however, only the 1-year Screamin' Eagle parts warranty will apply and labor will not be covered in the future if there is a related problem. Note: You can purchase a 3 or 5-year extended service plan, which attaches to the end of the two-year manufacturer's warranty. That means, if you purchased the 3-year extended, you'd be covered for 5 years. Likewise, if you purchased the 5-year extended, you'd be covered for 7 years. Then, as long as you don't exceed 75,000 miles you can renew your extended service plan for an additional 5-years for a total of 12 years risk-free engine work/labor. But, this all comes with a price tag of course. And a reminder that you've been forced to only use overpriced Harley parts. What Voids Your Harley Warranty? If you or anyone else besides a certified Harley dealership technician installs Harley Screamin' Eagle parts or any other brand performance engine parts on your Harley, any warranty you have is technically voided. We'll talk further about that later. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! As an example, and very technically speaking here, if you install simple aftermarket slip-on mufflers and an aftermarket stage-one air intake your two-year Harley manufacturer's warranty and any extended service plan you purchased is voided. Certainly, if a non-Harley certified dealership mechanic or you install a stage four kit of any brand, your Harley warranty will be voided. Further, if you or anyone else install an aftermarket electronic fuel injection (EFI) tuner, your entire Harley warranty is immediately voided. How Does Harley Decipher These Things? Some things are going to vary from dealership to dealership on how they choose to handle some of these issues and how they choose to treat their local customers. But first, what you need to know is that if you take your Harley to any dealership and they need to plug your Harley's engine control module (ECM) into their proprietary Digital Technician II software, it is going to automatically start reading things. If the software determines you have current EFI map/tuning changes in your ECM from an aftermarket non-Harley EFI tuner it will immediately & automatically send that info to the Harley servers and will be forever locked to your VIN. Thus, your entire Harley warranty will be voided! The dealership will plug your ECM into Digital Tech for simple things like flashing your Boom Box Infotainment system after adding a speaker and amp system or adding a Wireless Headset Interface Module (WHIM) for wireless Bluetooth headset pairing with you Boom Box. Or, they may need to read the ECM to diagnose fuel and/or air issues and many other things. Simple installs like aftermarket slip-on mufflers or an air intake will not be read by Digital Technician as those alone cause no changes to the ECM. On the other hand, EFI tuners do change the air/fuel settings in the ECM and so it can be read by Digital Technician. Dealerships do have some options on how they handle things. Essentially, the aftermarket mufflers and air intake are visual to a dealership and not read by Digital Technician, thus nothing is sent to Harley servers and a dealership mechanic can certainly just move along with business and not report such things. But, after adding an exhaust system and air intake you'd want to re-map your EFI for optimal performance anyways. You could consider paying the Harley tax for a simple stage one EFI download, which would not void the warranty. Or, you can continue and pay more Harley taxes by buying the Harley Screamin' Eagle EFI tuner, which is not as good as the Vance & Hines FuelPak 3 or others, and pay a Harley mechanic to install it for the sake of keeping your Harley warranty intact. These new strict Harley warranty issues are making customers very upset. So, it seems Harley is forcing customers to use their Screamin' Eagle parts exclusively and only allowing their mechanics to install them. And that is not sitting well with Harley's long time, once brand loyal customers. Many long-time loyalists are leaving Harley because of moves like this and other recent moves that leave their true paying customers very unhappy. Harley-Davidson tries to blame all these new warranty issues on the recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) pressures. Yes, Harley has had to make changes ordered by the EPA in the past several years as they are the big dog. I understand that, but to then take it as far as voiding a customer's warranty for simply installing slip-on mufflers or an air intake is extreme in my opinion & completely unnecessary. I can tell you that Screamin' Eagle EFI tuners, air intakes, and slip-on mufflers are the same as many other aftermarket options. Screamin' Eagle often times are not as good as other aftermarket options and always a higher price (the Harley tax). I certainly understand major engine work like a Harley stage four kit being installed and the requirement to use their parts and their mechanics to maintain a warranty. Those are major engine changes, but slip-on mufflers-really Harley? Note: If you are buying an used Harley from someone with a transferrable warranty, I'd make an appointment to have the Harley ECM plugged into Digital Tech to verify the warranty is intact prior to making a deal. I'll never buy another Harley Warranty! Make no mistake about it, Harley makes a large amount of money by pushing extended service plans at the time of purchase. Not to mention, now they're making you buy their parts and paying their mechanics. I've had Harley warranty's over the past years and I can remember only one time actually using it and it was a $200 bill. Most will tell you they've never used their Harley warranty. Harley would not be pushing these extended warranties if they were not making large amounts of money on them. I'll also mention, that is a testament to the high quality of a Harley when you buy it. Because of these new Harley warranty issues and them trying to force me not to work on my own bike, I'll never give Harley another penny for an extended warranty service plan ever again! If we all do that, it will send a very strong financial message to Harley that this is an unacceptable practice. I will continue to work on my own Harley and put the parts I want and not pay the Harley Screamin' Eagle tax. Harley riders buy a bike and then they customize it and personalize it with aftermarket parts to include their choice of exhaust, stage one air intake, and EFI tuner. And so many of us enjoy wrenching on our own Harley and we take great pride in such. It's been done this for so many years and this is one of the big draws for even purchasing a Harley in the first place. It's part of the Harley culture! Take those things away and Harley will continue to lose their very loyal core customers. Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE! Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, we talk about the proper procedures for emergency braking on your motorcycle. We go over both ABS and non-ABS systems in addition to linked braking systems. I had Oscar on a mic and we are both full-time Police Motorcycle Officers and train together. Additionally, I'm a Police Motorcycle Instructor. We go over some recent police motorcycle training we conducted on emergency motorcycle braking. Oscar rides a 2018 BMW Police R1200RT & I ride a 2018 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide and they act differently when emergency braking, but the techniques are the same. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Proper braking of your motorcycle in an emergency situation is likely the most important thing you can practice that can save your life out on the roads. The faster you can dump as much speed as you can to avoid completely or prior to an impact can't be stressed enough. The unfortunate thing is that so many riders have never gone out to a parking lot and practiced proper emergency braking techniques. Proper motorcycle emergency braking needs to be practiced routinely to stay sharp. We had several motorcycle brake related voicemails, so we really wanted to cover this topic. You can leave us a voicemail anytime right from your smartphone or computer and it may make the show! To test your motorcycle ABS system, simply find a safe place with a good clean surface and get going a little. Then slam on the rear brake. You'll hear and feel the ABS system engage on a Harley. It may be a little more subtle on a BMW or other metric bike. All riders should know what their ABS system feels like regardless of motorcycle make, so you are prepared and don't freak out if it happens in a real situation. Used Oil Analysis Note: We also discussed Oscar's recent used oil analysis (UOA) he sent to Blackstone LAB. He uses Amsoil and is going on 7,120 miles on an engine oil change on his 2013 Harley Ultra Limited and everything is looking good. He's going to keep going further and do another test later at around 10,000 miles. I've provided that UOA for your review if interested. Emergency Motorcycle Braking Procedures: We cover proper emergency threshold motorcycle braking in this episode such as applying 70% front brake to 30% rear brake. You should really get comfortable with your front brake as that is going to slow you quickly. Just using your rear brake is a very bad idea and alone won't stop you very quickly at all. Relying on it too much on the rear brake is a sign of a new or inexperienced rider. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Emergency Motorcycle Braking Drill: We also go over a simple and basic motorcycle emergency braking drill that you can practice. It's what we constantly practice as Police Motorcycle Officers. Find a safe parking lot with no gravel or major surface issues and set up a marked entry gate. You can use cones or any other marker. Then measure out 62' from the entry gate and put other markers at the end gate. You'll need a fair distance prior to the entry gate so you can get to the proper speeds. Start at 20 mph or below when going through the entry gate markers to start and get comfortable. Do not cover either the front or rear brake with your hand or foot. Make sure you are at a steady 20mph at the entry gate to start. Sit up, straighten and lock your arms, so you don't get pushed forward in the saddle when braking. After crossing the entry gate, hit the front brake 70% and the rear 30% trying to stay out of the ABS brakes and right on the edge of engaging them. If you don't have ABS then apply the same concept, trying to not lock up the rear or front tire. Shift down to first gear while emergency motorcycle braking. While braking, look in your mirrors as you would need to do on the actual roadway, so you can see what's coming up behind you and/or going to rear end you, so you can try to avoid it. When you brake fast it causes others behind you to react. Come to a stop before the second gate, putting only your left foot down and your right foot still on the rear brake. Still looking in your mirrors, start quickly and turn left or right as if to move out of the way of that car rushing up on your rear. It's called brake and escape. After you get comfortable, work your way up to a max speed of 40 mph. It's called the 40mph emergency braking drill and should be practiced often to stay sharp. You'll be amazed at how you will get better and better at this as you practice. It will give you much confidence. Have a partner watching that you are doing the drill correctly by not covering your brakes prior to the entry gate and that you are looking in your mirrors, shifting down, etc. If you ride two abreast with partners out on the road, then you should also practice the same drill while riding in this configuration. Of course, when you get stopped, one rider will turn out to the right and the other to the left. Riding with a partner side by side brings another dynamic to emergency braking and holding your wheel track is crucial. Emergency pair braking is for very advanced riders only. Listen in to this episode to get even more information and details. Now you have no excuse not to go practice. It could save your life! Official website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Harley-Davidson, Inc. announced that it has acquired StaCyc, Inc., They produce 12 and 16 EDRIVE, electric-powered bicycles specifically designed for kids. As a subsidiary, a Harley-Davidson branded version of StaCyc’s 12-inch and 16-inch models will be sold through select Harley-Davidson dealers. These Harley branded electric bikes will be available in the U.S. in the third quarter of 2019. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE It also appears Harley-Davidson is working on smaller electric scooters. They provided some prototypes to X-games athletes to ride around and they promoted them on Instagram. Many are wondering if they'll have an actual electric scooter model to put on the floor and sell to customers any time soon. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Why is Harley-Davidson focusing on all these electric bicycles and scooters? My opinion is that Harley is realizing that many older generation riders are fading and they really need to grab the attention of the younger generation who have many choices. They want to get the Harley brand introduced to young riders of bicycles and scooters, thus when they get older they'll consider a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. They want to continue to create brand loyal riders as they have for many years. Additionally, they just released their first electric motorcycle, the LiveWire, in late 2018 and they're likely learning much about electric vehicles with the bicycles and scooters, so they can be a leader in that market in the future. Don't worry, I don't believe Harley is trying to get out of the game of traditional motorcycles that has driven the company for so many years. They are just realizing that change and innovation is the only way to survive and compete in the future. Listen in to this podcast episode as we get into detail about what's going on. A study from the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, at the University of California, Los Angeles, seems to confirm that. We talk about many things such as the best police motorcycles, day to day duties, what I like, what I don't like, policies, equipment, my experience, and training. And a whole bunch more! I thank Lawdog at The Fine Blue Line Podcast for allowing me to use the interview audio file and put it out to the Law Abiding Biker™ audience on this podcast! I have never really explained in depth much about my police motor officer career because I'm always so busy putting out other biker content for this audience. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com There are many Harley-Davidson rider stereotypes out there to poke fun at. As soon as you read "Harley-Davidson Rider" an image popped into your head. It's just the way it is and for many years it seemed Harley-Davidson riders were unchanged. But, has that changed and are the changes good? On the mics were me, Lurch, and special guest and Patron Member Bob Dawson. They also weigh in on this subject and we had a great time, so listen in for a deeper look. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The Harley-Davidson rider you may think of is an unrefined middle-aged male, overweight, unhealthy, long dirty beard, dirty baggy jeans and sleeveless shirt, tattoos, half helmet or no helmet, leather jacket or vest with pins and patches, half finger leather gloves, clunky buckle style leather boots, leather chaps, bandana on his head, wearing goggles, and wearing no modern progressive safety gear. Did I nail it? I think that's been a long time stereotype of the Harley-Davidson rider, but it's changed over the years. If that's how you currently look, that's okay, own it. Sure, when most of us got our first Harley back in the day, we leathered up and looked the look and walked the walk to some extent. That was the expectation to make you feel like a real biker. But, once you actually start riding and not just hanging out at biker events looking good, you realize that you don't need to fit that stereotype and you are introduced to much lighter and better progressive riding gear. There's nothing wrong with leather and it still has its place if you like it. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! As you age you realize that you should probably care some about your physique and overall health if you want to continue riding and enjoying your Harley into the latter years. Long distant riding takes stamina and being healthy helps much. In general, we are a more health-conscious society these days and that has bled over to Harley riders too. In general, I've seen the typical Harley rider stereotype fading over the years and that continues. There is so much available to us in the marketplace now and bikers are taking advantage of buying actual gear that helps instead of trying to fit a particular look. Riders are just becoming smarter about things. And of course, you have different subsets of Harley rider stereotypes that have developed such as on the west coast. You'll see riders on Harley Dyna models with tall T-bars. They'll be wearing long Dickie shorts, vans shoes, and knee-high white socks & a T-shirt doing wheelies. Not that any of this is good safety gear, but it's a style. So, styles come and go in the motorcycle industry too. Listen in to this podcast episode as we really break it down and have some great laughs. Do you fit the Harley-Davidson rider stereotypes? New Free Video Mentioned: Got Lights? Official website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com The FX Network released its first season of the new motorcycle club based series named "Myans M.C.". They ran 10 episodes the first season and the last one aired in early November 2018. Although this is somewhat of a spin-off series from the Sons of Anarchy motorcycle club based FX Series, it is also very different in many ways. In this podcast episode, we break the series down for you and what's it's all about. The big question will be whether, as a biker, you should invest the time to watch the Mayans M.C. series? We do a roundtable and each of us gives you our personal opinions to help answer that question. I will tell you that after being a watcher of the Sons Of Anarchy series, I wasn't that invested after watching the first 3 episodes of the Mayans M.C. But, by the 4th episode, things started to flow for me and I am now a definite watcher and look forward to seeing if they'll release season two in 2019! I think it's common to take several episodes for any new TV series for an audience to buy in and become routine watchers. ABOUT THE SHOW *Taken from the FX Network Website Mayans M.C. is the next chapter in Kurt Sutter’s award-winning Sons of Anarchy saga. Set in a post-Jax Teller world, Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes (JD Pardo) is fresh out of prison and a prospect in the Mayans M.C. charter on the Cali/Mexi border. Now, EZ must carve out his new identity in a town where he was once the golden boy with the American Dream in his grasp. The series also stars Clayton Cardenas, Edward James Olmos, Sarah Bolger, Michael Irby, Carla Baratta, Antonio Jaramillo, Raoul Max Trujillo, Richard Cabral, and Danny Pino. Recurring stars include Emilio Rivera, Frankie Loyal, Joseph Lucero, Vincent Rocco Vargas, Maurice Compte, Gino Vento, Tony Plana and Ada Maris. Mayans M.C.was co-created by Kurt Sutter and Elgin James. Norberto Barba directs the first two episodes. The series is executive produced by Sutter and Barba, with James as Co-Executive Producer. The 10-episode first season is produced by Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions. New Free Video Mentioned: Speed and Strength Black 9 Moto Shirt Review Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE!
