How to Lead with Authenticity and Vulnerability In this week's episode, I chat with Melissa Creede, a leadership expert who shares powerful insights on how leaders can embrace authenticity while maintaining authority. We dive deep into how transparency can positively influence teams and what it takes to find a balance between vulnerability and authority. Top takeaways you can apply today: Be transparent about your challenges: Let your team know when you're having an off day. It builds trust and stops assumptions from spreading. Vulnerability with purpose: Share your struggles only when it serves to connect or teach others, not as a burden. Understand your values: Knowing your top 3-5 core values will help you align with your authentic self and guide decision-making. Connect beyond personal stories: Ask team members about their work experiences and feelings to connect on a deeper, human level. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by thru-hiker and Trek Writer, Katie Jackson, known on trail as Double Dip. Katie gives us an in depth breakdown of her recent thru-hike of the Continental Divide Trail, including why she advocates that hikers not take the Creede cutoff, her experience of a wild storm so intense that lightning struck and killed nearby cows, the challenge of losing her hiking partner early on, hiking on an injured foot for hundreds of miles- and how it was miraculously healed in some hot springs, waking up to grizzles in her camp, and much more. Katie also gives some of her backpacking hot takes, including how the Colorado Trail is superior to the JMT. We wrap the show with whether it'll be possible to thru-hike the AT in 2025, the incredible phenomenon that is Frito feet, my new depressing thing of the week, and the triple crown of places where a long trail should exist. Are you hoping to be more successful in your land business in 2024? On our latest podcast episode, we share how vital a schedule is to our business and accomplishments. It may sound like a silly task, but it's January and if you want to meet your end of year goals, it's important to map it out now so you can easily stay on track and adjust as needed. Transcript: Steven Jack Butala: I am Steven Jack Butala. Jill K. DeWit: And I'm Jill DeWit, and this is the Land Academy Show. Steven Jack Butala: This is episode 1,986, and today we are talking about a couple of things. Number one, scheduling 2024 so you can hit your accomplishment and succeed. And then, a little later on the show, we'll talk about the laws that actually govern your land transaction. It's an interesting, funny, anecdotal story about some people that we sat next to at dinner last night, and I'm not sure that they understand- Jill K. DeWit: What they were saying? Steven Jack Butala: What's governing their real estate agent driven failure. Jill K. DeWit: That's funny. Exactly. I want to stop and say happy New Year. Steven Jack Butala: Yeah. Jill K. DeWit: So it's now 2024. As you can see, if you are watching us, we are coming to you from the Rig. We are traveling again. I don't know how many weeks we'll be gone this time, but probably this will be a little bit of a shorter trip than we did last summer, for those of you who are in our world and follow over that, but what's funny is, I got to tell you, we go from our home to this and it's like we couldn't be happier. Steven Jack Butala: Yeah. Jill K. DeWit: Most people would be like, "Are you kidding me?" I'm sure even our friends are like, "You guys are weirdos." You have this big beautiful home and it's warm and sunny here, and you want to get into that and drive somewhere cold and be in a little mountain town, in a little rig, in a sweet little RV park and I'm like, "Yeah, that's really what we were going to do." Steven Jack Butala: We're in Durango right now, by the time this airs. Jill K. DeWit: Who knows where ... we'll probably still be here. Steven Jack Butala: Yeah. Maybe we will. Jill K. DeWit: Yeah. Steven Jack Butala: Durango is a blast, by the way. I can't say enough good stuff. Jill K. DeWit: Yeah. Steven Jack Butala: Everybody we meet. It's just the nicest people in the world. Jill K. DeWit: We are learning the lay of the land here. We're going to go check out Pagosa Springs and Creede and all kinds of good stuff coming up. So I'm excited. Steven Jack Butala: Each week on the show we answer questions from our Land Academy member Discord forum, and we review land acquisitions from our weekly member webinars, and we take a deep dive into the two land related topics that are requested. If you want to sneak peek of our Discord forum, go to landacademy.com, it's free. Jill K. DeWit: Actually. It's hidden. Steven Jack Butala: It's what? Jill K. DeWit: It's hidden, by the way. Steven Jack Butala: Why? Jill K. DeWit: Because because of our ... you know what? There's some sensitive stuff going on in there. Steven Jack Butala: Like what? Jill K. DeWit: Everything? Steven Jack Butala: No. Come on. Seriously, I want to know. Jill K. DeWit: No, there's some really good conversations in there and I want our members to speak freely, so it's kind of blurred out right now. FYI, just so you know, I let him- Steven Jack Butala: Can you please let me in on it? Jill K. DeWit: Well, I just did. Steven Jack Butala: No, can you let me in on what are people doing deals with each other? Jill K. DeWit: Yeah. Yeah. Steven Jack Butala: Is that what- Jill K. DeWit: Yeah, there's APNs flying around and some really personal information flying around there, so I'm like, yeah, we close it back up. So just so you know, it exists. If you go there, you'll find a nice little banner on it saying "Not for you." Sorry. Steven Jack Butala: My goodness. Jill K. DeWit: I don't mean it like that,

The Business of Meetings – Episode 184 – How Do 58+ Million American Households Spend their Holidays? Today, we are delighted to speak with David Basler, Chief Strategy Officer of the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC). In an industry boasting a trillion-dollar economic footprint, with 12 to 13,000 sites across America, and serving the vacation ambitions of over 58 million households, the ARVC plays a pivotal role in shaping and supporting the thriving world of RV parks and campgrounds.  David joins us to share his expertise, insights, and perspective on the current state and future potential of the dynamic RV and campground industry. Bio: A champion of whatever community he's a member of, David Basler is an entrepreneurial spirit, business leader, and philanthropist.  After working in publishing on the East Coast, David moved to historic Creede, Colorado in 2002 and started Creede Magazine Publishing, which he owned and operated until 2008. During this time, he also founded Keep Creede Beautiful, a nonprofit to maintain the beauty of Creede, and the John David Lentz Memorial Fund, which provides annual funding to the Creede Repertory Theatre.  After a 6-year stint with Meeting Professionals International (MPI) in Dallas, David, along with his wife, two daughters, and two dogs, moved to Denver in 2014. He is currently the Chief Strategy Officer for the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds, an organization representing more than 3,000 privately owned RV parks and campgrounds across North America. He and his wife, Amanda, are avid collectors of fine art and they remain extremely active philanthropically in the arts and education. Working alongside their oldest daughter, they lead both the John David Lentz Memorial Fund and the Genny Basler Memorial Fund. David also sits on the board of the Creede Center for the Arts and the advisory board of the Creede Repertory Theatre. When it's playtime, David enjoys fly-fishing, hiking, running, and travel, having visited all 50 states and more than 25 countries on three continents. David's journey David's journey began in high school when he discovered his passion for writing and communications through the guidance of a dedicated teacher and joined a remarkable high school magazine project. That publication, unlike most other school newspapers, was a full-color glossy magazine that earned numerous awards. Joining the magazine staff led to lasting friendships, and the impact of that formative experience left an indelible mark on his career trajectory, underscoring the profound impact of mentorship and community engagement. After college, he worked as an editor on the East Coast before realizing his dream of starting his own publication in Colorado. That venture expanded into a successful publishing company, producing calendars and visitor guides, and becoming a vital part of the local community. Subsequently, David moved to Dallas and began working for MPI after selling his business. MPI During his time with MPI, David played a pivotal role in its publishing, marketing, and communications sectors. His efforts included overseeing the launch of One Plus, a rebrand of a magazine previously called Meeting Professional, aimed to educate and inform meeting professionals worldwide. The rebranding initiative persisted for about four years before the strategic decision was made to revert to the original Meeting Professional brand to align the publication more effectively with the identity of the organization and its members.  An RV Trip Planning Session  Eric and David had a serendipitous encounter that led to a memorable RV trip planning session. David drew on his expertise in the RV and campground industry to assist Eric in crafting an unforgettable journey that served as a testament to the industry's collaborative spirit and its emphasis on fostering a sense of community. The Flourishing RV and Campground Landscape  The RV and campground industry in the United States is economically significant, constituting approximately 2% of the GDP. The industry's consistent growth was underscored by an influx of new enthusiasts, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. David attributes the industry's appeal to its diverse accommodation options and the unique experiences offered within campgrounds. Championing the Industry  The National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC) is tireless in its efforts to advocate for the RV and campground industry in Washington, D.C. Its endeavors mostly revolve around showcasing the considerable financial impact of the industry and the sway wielded by campground owners as influential voters. These advocacy undertakings focus on emphasizing the industry's significance to legislators and stakeholders. A Kaleidoscope of Campgrounds  The vast spectrum of campgrounds ranges from intimate, cozy sites to sprawling mega parks with thousands of slots. David highlights the pivotal role of diversity in catering to the varied preferences of campers. The ethos of campgrounds is centered on inclusivity, ensuring that every individual, regardless of background or preferences, can find a campground that resonates with their desires. Creating Lasting Memories  The transformative power of camping experiences is unparalleled! Campgrounds play a significant role in crafting enduring memories and fostering a profound sense of community among campers. The Industry's Forward Trajectory  David envisions a future where the RV and campground industry continue flourishing over the next decade. Despite potential hurdles, such as fluctuations in interest rates, the innate strength and resilience of the RV and campground industry are anticipated to weather any storm. Can we be done with COVID yet? After a week, where our concert was cancelled just as family arrived in town to see it, all of our friends got sick, Nola turned 1 year old, and Emily's work closed for 10 days, we admittedly felt a little 2020 PTSD. We decided to check in with each other, and dig into how we're feeling...hint...it's not great. We discuss dealing with past trauma, grieving the loss of our former selves in a way that we're still trying to wrap our head around after a pandemic/baby one two punch.Nate discusses how feeling defeated, led him to defy airport employees because life has been so out of control lately. At the end of the day, we are two tired people, who were feeling particularly downtrodden, and just hit record to show up as authentically messy as we could for 80 minutes. So while BA.5 tears across the country, and you find yourself having Deja Vu of March 2020 all over again, join us in solidarity.Great News! Twice as Less Not Perfect: A Messy Marriage Podcast

This week, we dive into The D Word; one of the scariest words you can utter in a marriage. We break down 8 common signs of divorce and reflect on how we recognized these red flags later than we would have liked. But after standing on the edge of marital oblivion, we found that living in fear of divorce was not nearly as helpful as having a healthy respect for it. That healthy respect is part of what keeps a marriage in the moment, looking out for trouble on the horizon, and a relationship built on open communication.Read the article here: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/better-divorce/202108/8-signs-partner-may-want-divorceGreat News! In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, brought to you by RTIC, we are joined yet again by our pal, Clay Bonnyman Evans, known on trail as "Pony". Pony is fresh off the New Mexico stretch of the CDT and full of hot takes, including a renewed interest in all things dealing with sex on trail, why he thinks the "brutality" of the CDT is overstated- at least through New Mexico, we learn all about Clay's new book, "Adrift on the Pacific Crest Trail: A Thru-Hiking Story", and why Pony decided to do his first long distance backpacking trip sober. For those who've listened to previous interviews with Pony, you already know that conversations with him are a wild ride, this one is certainly no exception. If your children are listening to this episode, probably turn it off. We wrap the show with a detailing of the dumpster fire that is Chaunce's toilet and we do a triple crown of reasons why Zach's Tahoe Rim Trail hike will get canceled. He claimed the piece of land for England, which is now Newfoundland. • 1892: Robert Ford was gunned down in a Creede, Colorado, saloon. Ten years earlier, as a new recruit in the Jesse James gang, he had killed Jesse for a $10,000 reward. • 1997: The Air Force released a report on the so-called “Roswell Incident,” suggesting the alien bodies witnesses reported seeing in 1947 were actually life-sized dummies. • 2010: John Isner of the United States defeated Nicolas Mahut of France at Wimbledon, in the longest match in professional tennis history: 11 hours, 5 minutes. • 2014: The original lyrics to Like a Rolling Stone, handwritten by Bob Dylan on hotel stationery, sold for $2 million at auction. I am excited to introduce today’s Extraordinary Women Radio guest, Pam Houston: Author of Deep Creek: Finding Hope In The High Country and Cowboys Are My Weakness. Pam is one of my favorite authors of all time! I read Pam’s book, Cowboys Are My Weakness, many, many years ago. Her books a series of short stories about her life – so many which mirrored my own life at that time – and her fun writing style made me feel like I was in the room with her. Fast forward all these years later, and one of my clients casually asks, "Have you ever read any Pam Houston books? She has a new book out that made me think of you." "OMG – yes I know who she is! I love her writing!" And I instantly proceeded to order her most recent  book, Deep Creek: Finding Hope in the High Country. Deep Creek tells Pam’s story of finding her ranch in Creede, CO. At 31 years old, she was fresh off a tour promoting her book, Cowboys Are My Weakness. ,She had “no job, no place to lie except her North Face tent.” On an impulse and a good instinct, she spent her royalties on a 120-acre ranch near Creede, Colorado. It was more than she could afford, and required more maintenance than she could manage. And yet, 25 years later, it’s the piece of land that’s defined the largest part of her life. Deep Creek tells the remarkable story of “that girl who dared herself to buy a ranch, dared herself to dig in and care for it, to work hard enough to pay for it, to figure out what other people mean when they use the world ‘home.”’ So you can imagine how excited I was when I reached out to Pam as I was reading Deep Creek, and said – hey can I feature you on Extraordinary Women Radio – and within minutes she emailed back and said “Sure!” What’s really fun for me, is I’ve trail ridden in the mountains above Pam’s ranch. This is deep high country, and it is where my father’s ashes are spread, high atop a mountain range, 16 miles from any roads. This country is wild, rugged and magically spirit-filled. I feel Pam’s love for this land. It truly was a delight to feature Pam in this interview. She is also the author of Contents May Have Shifted, Waltzing the Cat, the novel, Sight Hound, and a collection of essays, A Little More About Me. Her stories have been selected for volumes of Best American Short Stories, The O. Henry Awards, The 2013 Pushcart Prize, and Best American Short Stories of the Century. She is the winner of the Western States Book Award, the WILLA award for contemporary fiction, The Evil Companions Literary Award and multiple teaching awards. She co-founded the literary nonprofit Writing By Writers, is a professor of English at UC Davis, teaches in The Institute of American Indian Art, and at writer’s conferences around the country and the world. To learn more about Pam, follow her on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. It is my pleasure to introduce you to one of my sheroes, Pam Houston. Pam Houston Show Notes

Official website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Harley-Davidson, Inc. announced that it has acquired StaCyc, Inc.,  They produce 12 and 16 EDRIVE, electric-powered bicycles specifically designed for kids. As a subsidiary, a Harley-Davidson branded version of StaCyc’s 12-inch and 16-inch models will be sold through select Harley-Davidson dealers. These Harley branded electric bikes will be available in the U.S. in the third quarter of 2019.  SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE It also appears Harley-Davidson is working on smaller electric scooters. They provided some prototypes to X-games athletes to ride around and they promoted them on Instagram. Many are wondering if they'll have an actual electric scooter model to put on the floor and sell to customers any time soon.  CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Why is Harley-Davidson focusing on all these electric bicycles and scooters? My opinion is that Harley is realizing that many older generation riders are fading and they really need to grab the attention of the younger generation who have many choices. They want to get the Harley brand introduced to young riders of bicycles and scooters, thus when they get older they'll consider a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. They want to continue to create brand loyal riders as they have for many years.  Additionally, they just released their first electric motorcycle, the LiveWire, in late 2018 and they're likely learning much about electric vehicles with the bicycles and scooters, so they can be a leader in that market in the future.  Don't worry, I don't believe Harley is trying to get out of the game of traditional motorcycles that has driven the company for so many years. They are just realizing that change and innovation is the only way to survive and compete in the future.  Listen in to this podcast episode as we get into detail about what's going on.  Sponsor-Ciro 3D CLICK HERE! Three UCLA researchers studied more than 50 motorcycle riders in tests that recorded their brain activity and hormone levels before, during and after riding a bike, driving a car and resting. Did they prove there are potential mental and physical benefits of riding your motorcycle? Well, listen in to this podcast episode and find out as we break it down for you.  SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Next, we talk about that fact that motorcycle lane splitting or lane filtering may be legalized and coming to your state in 2019? California is still the only state where lane splitting is legal and many other states are watching closely. Unfortunately, lane splitting has become a rather controversial topic. Mostly by those that don't understand the many benefits of motorcycle lane splitting & don't ride motorcycles themselves.   The following states are in different stages of possibly legalizing lane splitting: Maryland, Connecticut, Utah, Oregon, Texas, and Hawaii.
