Looks like rain arrives around noon today & continues through the evening & overnight. Lawn is going to be an absolute jungle by Saturday! And speaking of lawns, we checked in to make sure you're mowing correctly. In the news this morning, a guilty verdict for a La Crosse man who forced a woman into prostitution to repay her debt to him, an update on the suspended commander at Fort McCoy, the WI DOT has revoked a bunch of licenses for car dealerships throughout the state, and more info on the NFL draft in Green Bay this weekend. In sports, the Brew Crew dropped another one to the Giants last night, the NBA playoffs continued, and the NHL playoffs also kept chugging along. Sad news out of the NFL as Bears legend and football Hall of Famer Steve "Mongo" McMichael passed away yesterday after battling ALS. Elsewhere in sports, we took a look at the upcoming schedule for the NBA & NHL playoffs, and we talked about Faith Kipyegon attempting to break the 4-minute mile barrier. Good luck, yo! Today is "National Pigs in a Blanket Day", so celebrate with some weenies in a crescent roll! We let you know what's on the boob tube today/tonight and talked about the upcoming Pee Wee Herman documentary. Plus, a cool story about a good Samaritan that helped a fellow runner during the Boston Marathon on Monday. It is "Hypothetical Thursday" today, and Jean's question for Brian was: "If you could experience any natural disaster & live, which one would you choose?" Brian's question for Jean was: "If you could cure cancer by pressing a button, but one random person would have to die, would you do it?" Office Cora joined us just after 8am to talk about what she's doing this weekend in the 715, and a former tennis legend is now trying out pickleball. In today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about some people trapped in a driverless car, a #FloridaMan who trapped a gator in a trash can, an update on the drunk postal worker that we talked about yesterday, a mortician in Texas who was allegedly experimenting on bodies, a fight between two strippers from rival clubs, and another educator running a student "Fight Club" at school.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

TALK TO ME, TEXT ITThe rain pours down in Alabama as I share my excitement about attending tonight's minor league baseball game – a rare late evening out that hopefully won't be dampened by the weather. But something more concerning than rain clouds is brewing in our military installations across the country.Military leadership is experiencing a significant shake-up, with multiple commanders – notably women – being removed from their positions. Colonel Sheila Baez Ramirez's suspension from Fort McCoy highlights a peculiar pattern: official photographs of President Trump, Vice President Vance, and Defense Secretary Hegseth mysteriously absent from chain of command boards. What's particularly striking is how these empty frames were immediately filled following her suspension, suggesting potential resistance rather than administrative oversight. This pattern extends beyond Fort McCoy, with similar situations occurring at other installations and even in my own workplace, where leadership photographs remain conspicuously absent despite explicit communications about their installation.Beyond military matters, we explore the troubling case of New Mexico Judge Joel Cano, who resigned after harboring an illegal Venezuelan gang member on his property, and the bizarre phenomenon of parents defending their children's destructive behavior in movie theaters during Minecraft screenings. The disrespect shown for public spaces raises important questions about parenting and accountability in our society. We also examine the case of German teenagers denied entry to the United States after border officials determined they planned to work illegally despite claiming tourist status. What's your take on these current events? And while we're sharing – what toppings do you prefer on your hot dog? I'm a fan of everything from mustard and ketchup to chili, cheese, onions, and even slaw! Join the conversation and let me know what you think about today's hot topics and hot dog preferences.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched!Start for FREE Thanks for listening! When Ernesto Rodriguez of La Crosse was 24 years old, he left the only home he’d ever known: Cuba. He, along with 125,000 of his fellow Cubans, hopped on boats bound for the United States in 1980. They were part of the mass exodus known as the Mariel Boatlift, a rare moment when President Fidel Castro allowed residents to leave the island. And after he was sent to Fort McCoy, he moved in the Brandstetter family in Sparta, Wisconsin. Erne’s story is featured on the podcast, “WPR Reports: Uprooted.”

Dr. Aaron Engel, the superintendent for the School District of La Crosse, joins to discuss the gigantic student band La Crosse Confluence playing big gigs in the area, the $53.5 million referendum, how school districts are struggling, and wrapping up his fourth year. The first big topic (8:15) was this huge student band that rotates through graduating and it's playing at Moon Tunes this week and also has a gig at Ashley for the Arts in Arcadia this summer. After that (12:30), we talked about how graduating went. The seniors who graduated would have been freshmen when the pandemic hit, and what the district does for those students who don't graduate. That also led into a conversation (14:45) about the years-long problem of chronic absenteeism in the district. In the second half of the show (20:50), we discussed the Milwaukee Public School District's “accounting error” that could cost $50 million, and whether the La Crosse School District would ever find itself in a similar situation and how a school board its into that equation. Next we got into the $53.5 million referendum (23:50) that could go on the November ballot, but started the conversation on whether the La Crosse School District is struggling — and therefore needs to go to referendum — or if all districts in Wisconsin are struggling. In regards to the referendum, we also discussed the upcoming public engagement sessions the district has had and the ones coming up — 6 p.m. Tuesday and another on July 17 — and what they've learned (31:30) from the community so far, plus what the backup plans and repercussions (32:45) are if the referendum fails. Ended the interview (35:40) with Engel answering some texts about absenteeism and the referendum. Began the show getting Engel's opinion on blowing stuff up. Engel is a Lt. Colonel for the National Guard serving at Fort McCoy and we asked him about a funny story from a past show, where Airfest's Dave Larsen told a story about using 180 pounds of C4 to blow up a car, and if that would happen today. Before the first break, we also hit on (5:30) Juneteenth coming up and how students nowadays learn about that, but when we were students, that wasn't a thing that was taught in the 1990s.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

While Dave Larsen and Bruce Mathew stopped in studio to talk about the Deke Slayton Airfest and Freedom Honor Flight, we did get one story about blowing up a Mercury Zephyrs with C4 at Fort McCoy, and another story about nearly crashing a plane as a teen and possibly never telling mom.  Larsen is the Airfest media director and spent 20 years in Wisconsin Army National Guard, retiring in 1999, while Mathew is the Airfest air operations coordinator and has been a pilot since he was 14 years old.  We spent most of the show talking about Airfest, which is happening June 13-14 and will feature the Navy's Blue Angels and the Air Force's brand new F-22 Raptors. But we learn Apache helicopters are now part of the attraction, as well as the Coast Guard's "Dolphin," MH-65 chopper. We did take an interlude (11:30) to get an incredibly hilarious story from Larsen about blowing up his old winter beater at Fort McCoy that set the woods on fire.  In the second half of the show (18:20), we got back into Airfest talk and some of the highlights of shows present and past. Airfest has been going on since 1998. We discussed how the F22 Hornets show this year will compare to the Blue Angels and the brand new, trillion-dollar F-35 that was here back in 2021. Then we got into a quick story from Mathew (31:20) about nearly crashing his plane as a teenage pilot, and apparently he never told his parents about it. Lastly (34:30), we discussed the Freedom Honor Flight, that takes area veterans to Washington DC to see the memorials. The next one comes up Sept. 21. It's no secret that we aren't believers in coincidence at HHAUSA and meeting this week's guest was anything but last summer in Appleton Wisconsin. In town for Mission 20, three close friends and previous guests on the podcast, Aaron Ritter, Al Quackenbush, Jeff Litteral and myself were out for dinner. Passing a Crumble Cookie earlier, it sounded like a great idea for dessert so the four of us piled into my truck and were soon wide eyed at the kiosk placing our order. The couple in front of us were waiting for their sugar filled delicacies when the husband turned around hearing our conversation. Much to my surprise, Jonathan McGlin was sporting a BowAdx hat. While I am a huge fan of the company and owner Chad Davis, I don't see much of their apparel in my travels so it was a pleasant surprise for us all. The grin on McGlin's face grew wider when he noticed me and Jeff sporting BowAdx gear as well. The six of us would adjourn to my tailgate in the parking lot, broke out the cookies and spent the next half hour talking hunting, faith, HHAUSA and how thankful we were for divine appointments and new friends.Jonathan had previously been on the Elk Shape Podcast, discussing his goal of going on his first elk hunt in 2024. Wanting to shed some weight and improve his physical conditioning and overall health, his podcast was familiar to both Aaron and Al...another "coincidence".  McGlin would stop out that Saturday, tagging along for a few targets at our fundraiser and getting to know his new friends a bit better. Unable to stay for the entire day and shoot, he did join me and my group later in the summer in Wisconsin Rapids at Mission 23. Able to meet other members of the HHAUSA family including Veteran Brad Rothermel, it was safe to say that he was hooked. I have no doubt that we will be seeing more of him at our events in 2023.Growing up hunting with his father, Jonathan's relationship with his dad was tested in his early teens. Active in the Wisconsin National Guard, the elder McGlin was home on weekends but spent a lot of time across the state at Fort McCoy during the week, missing out on a few things as his boy became a man. But they could always count on spending opening weekend of deer season together, a tradition that Jonathan credits for his deep love for the outdoors. Having long ago mended fences, the two enjoy hunting together now and time has given Jonathan a much deeper appreciation for the sacrifices that his father made for his family and his country.A season ticket holder at Lambeau Field, McGlin texted me a few weeks ago about the Monday night Packers Rams game. He was interested in bringing a Veteran to the historic venue and through yet another divine appointment, we were able to connect Rothermel with Jonathan to experience his first trip to the Frozen Tundra. I had introduced the two when we shot together in Rapids and a great time was had by all, thanks to McGlin's generosity and God doing what only He can do.Both men of faith, passionate about the outdoors and helping others, Jonathan and I instantly hit it off and have stayed in touch frequently in the six months since our predestined meeting in July.  There are so many little things that go on behind the scenes of what we do at HHAUSA that the public never sees or hears about and this story had to be shared.  Friendships like these are a part of that and blessings that I didn't even consider when we started our organization. I am so thankful for men like Jonathan in my life and for his support for those who serve and have served our country. You can find Jonathan on Facebook and Instagram @jmcglin_obtopoFor more information about HHAUSA and how you can support our mission, visit www.hhausa.orgTo purchases HHAUSA hats, shirts, challenge coins and tumblers, visit www.hhasports.com

On this episode of Expanded Perspectives, the guys start the show by talking about the most recent interview by Joe Rogan with Jeremy Corbell. Aliens are very real and we have known about them for a very long time it seems. Is it possible they are living under our own oceans and there is nothing we can do about them? Then, two separate sightings of a real life werewolf were spotted near Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. Next, a person believes some unseen force was trying to lure them deeper into the woods, only to never return. After the break, Kyle brings up some strange Aquatic Humanoids. Everyone has heard of mermaids, but they aren't the only aquatic humanoid creature around. For centuries, legends from around the world have told of other watery beasts that resemble human beings. Indeed, such stories seem to have been a common thread across various cultures. Many cultures and mythologies have stories of spirits, demons, creatures, monsters, and other fauna of folklore. It is common for these creatures to take a humanoid, or humanlike, form. A humanoid creature appears to have some of the same characteristics and structures as a human but is definitely not a human being. Humanoid creatures play an important role within mythology, legends, and folklore throughout the world. Some legends have humanoids portrayed as protectors; some as tricksters and cautionary tales; and some others as the gods and goddesses themselves, the composites and personifications of the most powerful and awesome natural phenomena. Despite them being regarded as only legends, many people have come forward with eyewitness testimony indicating these creatures are REAL! State Department officials remained coy on the deadline today, adding that it doesn't affect efforts to evacuate those who want to leave Afghanistan. It comes as roughly 16,000 people have been evacuated out of Kabul in the last 24 hours, bringing that total to nearly 37,000. In that same timeframe, some 1,300 evacuees arrived at Dulles International Airport on five flights while 1,200 Afghans have been distributed between four US bases: Fort Lee, Fort McCoy, Fort Bliss, and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

190: Benjamin Breckheimer: Former Staff Sergeant who was blown up by an IED, then overcame his injury plus divorce and suicidal thoughts to regain his drive by becoming the 1st Purple Heart recipient to climb the Seven Summits.    Benjamin Breckheimer   Did Benjamin Breckheimer always want to be in the military? “When Desert Storm was unfolding, I wasn’t even 7-years-old. I just remember watching all of the news footage and I was just amazed by the nighttime footage of the raid, and I was like, if there is ever a war I want to be a part of it. Unfortunately, tragic events of September 11th, 2001 happened and I graduated from high school in June of 2002 and right out of high school I decided to join the military. I didn’t exactly know what I was going to do in the military.”  On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Benjamin Breckheimer why he felt compelled to join the military. “My dream as a kid for an occupation was to be a surgeon. But I didn’t want to go to eight years of college after just getting out of 12 years of school that I didn’t really want to do. I scored pretty well on the ASVAB. It is the military test, the aptitude test basically. It gives you certain engineering or medical, science sort of things. I don’t remember what my score was. But I remember the recruiter saying, just let me know what you want to do. You can pretty much do anything. My exact words out of my mouth were, ‘I want to be as close to the surgeon as I can without having to go to college,’ and operating specialist is what they came up with.”   What You Will Learn: What did being on reserves consist of for Benjamin? “As a reservist, you do the first weekend of every month. You do drill weekends, which are your training weekends. Then two weeks out of the summer you go do training in a military installation. I was in Wisconsin. So, we would go to Fort McCoy for two weeks and just do training for those two weeks. The unit I waa with, they actually deployed to Afghanistan prior to me arriving at that unit, and they weren’t slotted to go back overseas for another two or three years. I just never got that opportunity while I was with them. So, I just asked my Company Commander if he would let me go active duty, and he signed the paperwork.” Benjamin Breckheimer discusses getting deployed to Baddad. “In September of 2005, I got exactly what I was hoping for. I got to deploy to Bagdad, Iraq for a year, and as an operating room specialist the civilian world would be a surgical tech. So, you assist a surgeon in surgeries, hand him the tools, retrack, anything they really needed. It was the first time I ever saw an individual pass on my operating room table. You know, this thought came through my head that it wasn’t fair that this kid, and I say kid lightly because we were all young at that age, I would like to believe, was dieing for me. He was out fighting for me and I was safe in the green zone. I wasn’t out on the front lines or anything like that, and it just didn’t seem fair that he was giving his life while  I was safe.”  What was it like for Benjamin Breckheimer after a year in Bagdad? “I wanted to do more, I would like to believe. I just felt like I wasn;t doing enough. I didn’t feel like I was doing my part, so to say. Once I got back from Iraq I pretty much had my mind set on changing my job in the military and I ended up reclassifying as a Calvary Scout. That is completely in the opposite end of being in the medical field. A Calvary Scout, you do reconacense, surveillance. You make targets for overhead bombings. So, you are on the frontlines doing this stuff. The saying that the grassing isn’t always greener on the other side is true. It was a tough job.”  What is the difference between when he went from Afghanistan to Iraq? “When we landed in Iraq, I really felt like there was an appreciation. It was a big city. Baghdad is a huge city. So, there is a lot of infrastructure around, and when we arrived in Candahar it felt like it was very desolate, just more of a desert. I’m not going to say wasteland, more desert than city infrastructure.” How did Benjamin Breckheimer’s injury take place? “A stryker vehicle is basically an eight-wheeled tank. There are four wheels on each side. It could hold up to 10 individuals in this vehicle, aside from the driver. We were actually out on a mission early in the morning on September 13th to go pay for damages that were done to an irrigation system that a farmer had. I was the very last vehicle in a four-vehicle convoy. Just following the tracks of the vehicle in front of me. I was either too far left or too far right from those tracks and it was lights out. It felt like I hit a brick wall literally. It was crazy because you don't see it coming. It just happened. I like the fact that I am able to remember everything . But I think more so because I was the only individual to get wounded. In all, I had a concussion. My right eardrum was blown, a couple vertebrae fracture, mild TBI, minor pelvic fracture. Both of my femurs were fractured, and my right leg was literally hanging by a strip of skin.”    When You Get Knocked Down Keep Going How many surgeries did he have between flown back to the states and the surgery that he had in Afghanistan? “I got rushed into the emergency room and that was the first time I felt really terrified. I went from working on the side of the operating table to end up being on it. It was very scary for me. It really brought me back to how the individuals in Iraq felt when we were rolling them into the ER. From the point of impact, I had surgery done on both of my femurs and my lower right leg, which they put external fixators on, which is, they basically pin in your bone and then they have a carbon rod to stabilize your bone and I had that surgery done right away.”   Finding His Summit in Mountaineering  During this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, Benjamin Breckheimer talks about how he got into mountaineering, “I was really stepping out of my comfort zone, which I think a lot of people in those dark situations might need to do. But the mountaineering, like you said, it took me a while before I realised that I was climbing for other reasons. I will start by saying this, the very first mountain I submitted was Mount Elbrus in Russia.”   Links to Additional Resources: Mark Pattison: markpattisonnfl.com Emilia’s Everest - The Lhotse Challenge: https://www.markpattisonnfl.com/philanthropy/ Benjamin Breckheimer: Website | Instagram

Angela joined the National Guard as a cook and then headed off to basic training the summer between her junior and senior year of high school. She realized after basic training that being a cook wasn’t what she wanted to do. She couldn’t get out of that career field because she had received a bonus on her enlistment. She looked into going active duty, joining the Marines, but nothing panned out. She did get to switch from being a cook to water purification. The National Guard was in charge of primarily all the water purification for the Army so they were required to head to Camp Pendleton in California each year for training. She had been working in that job in the National Guard for about two years when Sadam Husain invaded Kuwait. They were immediately set on high alert with the expectation they would be deploying soon. The North Dakota National Guard had not been called up for a deployment for over 30 years so everyone was surprised, but also ready to meet the needs of the Army. They were mobilized and sent to Fort McCoy in Wisconsin for training and soon after arriving they were sent to Kuwait. One of the first to be deployed to Kuwait for Operation Desert Storm. It was pretty shocking to deploy and to be one of the first to leave was even more unexpected. She said there was a lot of learning as you went and making due with what you had. Luckily, they deployed with their vehicles and were very fortunate to have their trucks. So many other people did not deploy with vehicles. Her unit was small and made up of people who grew up together so she described it like the Brady Bunch going to war. She said there were sibling rivalry and other squabbles, but they were also a tight-knit group. But the six girls were often given the hard jobs that no one wanted to do and none of the guys were willing to help them put up their tent so it caused animosity between the group. While they were acclimating to their new environment their Sargent found them a job to do. They were training people on how to use a Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit (ROWPU) which turns salt water or dirty water to drinking water. They left the nasty camp they were at and headed to the Persian Gulf for training. She said it was beautiful. Her job overseas was to distribute out the water. They had to use so much chlorine to treat the water that they found their water sources somewhere else. They were lucky because they were at a base and had another supply point. They were pretty far North and the Iraqis that were near them had been cut off from supplies so they surrendered and they didn’t have to worry about that threat. But they did have to worry about chemical attacks and were constantly in their chemical gear. And one time a chemical plant was attached and after 3 days they told them they could take off their chemical protection gear because it wasn’t too bad. But it doesn’t mean there were no health issues caused by deploying for Operation Desert Storm. Coming home was a difficult transition. Honking horns had meant to get into MOPP gear and that was a daily part of life at home. And it was also so quiet. After being deployed and having constant noise ranging from generators, and other random noises to complete quiet was difficult. She also talked about the lack of reintegration and not having anyone to talk to about her experience. She was one of the first to come home from her deployment. The unit had been picked to be part of a parade to celebrate the end of the war, but their plane got a fuel leak and they had to stop in Maine for repairs and missed the parade.
