The EU faces many challenges with decarbonising the economy, lowering energy prices and enhancing its industrial competitiveness. Big investments in renewable energy sources and energy storage facilities are required. Leveraging flow batteries will be pivotal in helping to power energy systems in a flexible, stable and reliable way. But what exactly are flow batteries? And how can these batteries make a significant contribution to the generation of renewable energies? This is what we want to discuss today with John Alper, Principal Technologist at VoltStorage (FBE Member) and Anthony Price, Secretary General at Flow Batteries Europe (FBE). About Dr. John Alper Dr. John Alper is the Principal Technologist at VoltStorage. He is an expert in electrochemical engineering with 15 years of experience in energy storage R&D across multiple chemistries, including vanadium, iron-titanium, and all iron flow batteries. For the last five years, his focus has been on the development and commercialization of the Iron Salt Battery for grid-scale applications at VoltStorage GmbH. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. About Anthony Price Anthony Price is the Founder and Director of Swanbarton Limited and Secretary General of Flow Batteries Europe. He has worked in the flow battery sector for over thirty years, starting with commercialising Innogy's flow battery development. Swanbarton, a consultancy company, supports clients across a range of storage technologies: batteries, including flow, sodium sulphur, and other storage systems, focusing on both large-scale systems and behind-the-meter and microgrids. A former director of the Energy Storage Association, he founded the UK's trade association, the Electricity Storage Network, to raise the profile of energy storage. He also founded the International Flow Battery Forum. He is a chartered engineer, has an MA from the University of Cambridge and was appointed OBE in 2021 in recognition of his services to the energy storage industry.

GOLD STAR RIDE FOUNDATION Anthony “Token Squid” Price part 2 The episode delves into the impactful mission of Anthony Price, the founder and executive director of the Gold Star Ride Foundation, whose work focuses on providing support to Gold Star families who have lost loved ones in military service. He shares the profound personal inspiration that led him to establish this foundation, stemming from his experiences meeting grieving families during his motorcycle rides across the country. Throughout the conversation, Anthony emphasizes the societal apathy toward the sacrifices made by these families, suggesting that contemporary culture has become increasingly disconnected from such realities. He also reflects on his own journey of empathy and connection, illustrating how his motorcycle rides serve not only as a means of outreach but as a transformative experience for himself and those he meets along the way. The episode culminates in a heartfelt exploration of the emotional resonance of his mission, encouraging listeners to recognize and support the often-overlooked needs of Gold Star families.Takeaways: The Kingdom Crossroads podcast features Pastor Bob Thibodeau interviewing various Christian influencers who share impactful stories about faith and service. Anthony Price, founder of Gold Star Ride Foundation, emphasizes the importance of supporting Gold Star families, who often feel forgotten in society. During his motorcycle journeys, Anthony encounters numerous families, illustrating the profound emotional connections formed during these visits. The podcast discusses the societal empathy deficit, suggesting that younger generations may lack understanding of sacrifices made by service members and their families. Anthony's motorcycle experiences are described as transcendental, highlighting how they help him connect more deeply with the individuals he meets across the country. The narrative encourages listeners to appreciate the value of community and to actively engage in supporting those who have suffered loss due to military service. The Gold Star Ride Foundation will actively support, comfort and provide education benefits to Gold Star Families throughout the United States and will provide these things directly with personal visits via motorcycle; and we will support those other organizations that work to assist in these same activities. We do the work that our fallen heroes would do it they hadn't fallen for all our freedom. In 2016, The Gold Star Ride Foundation began with a simple idea: Remember the families of the fallen. Now we are approaching the end of our seventh year of doing just that. We met Joe, who didn't know he was a Gold Star Dad, when he stopped to help us with a broken motorcycle near the New York state line. We met Mary, who was told she didn't earn a Gold Star because her daughter, a US Marine, was killed when the Humvee, in which she was training, rolled over and killed her. "They" said she wasn't a Gold Star Mom. We said she was. We met a 12 year old who never got to know his dad. We did what his dad would have done, and helped with tuition. We helped more than 60 families in 2018, when we met with them in person on our national motorcycle Ride for Gold Star Families. In 2019, we logged another 15,000 miles or so, raising the number of families that we helped to nearly 100! In 2020, 2021, and so far in 2022, we've continued to meet with families. We've now met with more than 450. Sometimes, all we had to do was show up. Sometimes, we paid the rent so a family who had given a life for all of us to be free would not go homeless. In one case, we got a house for a homeless family. In another case, we found nursing care for an aging Gold Star Dad. Another family said they didn't want anything, but we filled their refrigerator and helped them get some new clothes. Yet another Gold Star Family received a grant to help them get a new car. The Gold Star Ride Foundation averages 10 Gold Star Families a month, every month. And we have honored families made Gold Star by every conflict since WWII. We are not bogged down by red tape. If there is a need for a Gold Star Family, we do all we can to fill it. We try to do it on a motorcycle, so we can meet the family in person, and make some noise with our bikes. We keep working. With your continued support, we will meet everyone's needs. If you know a family, tell them about us. We do not seek to violate the privacy of any Gold Star Family, and we are here to help. Half or more of the families we met requested that we keep it quiet. We're happy to do that. As you know, The Gold Star Ride Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization, which works to honor and support Gold Star Families across the United States. In 2020, 73% of ALL CONTRIBUTIONS went directly to helping Gold Star Families: during Covid. In 2021, we made it to 78%. In 2022, we hit 82.1% of all money coming in going out. But our goal is 85% or better. By comparison, WWP collected $287.6M and paid out $57M in grants, while another $75.6M went to corporate salaries, which translates to less than 20% of their money paid to veterans. This information was taken from their TAX RETURN. Their website, by contrast, says they spent $197M on veterans. That's a 140 Million Dollar difference. Should you believe them (what their website says), or them (what their tax return says), because they can't both be right, can they? Folds of Honor, according to their tax documents, collected $35M in contributions and paid out $16M in grants to vets families and $5M in corporate salaries which translates to a little over 40% going to help the families they say they support and nearly 15% going into their pockets. How is it that we can put 78% out to the families during a Covid year when all income was down? Simple. We are all volunteers. We have no internal salaries to support. (Incidentally, the executive director of the Gold Star Ride Foundation is, himself, a disabled warrior. When applying for benefits from WWP, he was summarily denied any help because he served during the First Gulf War (Dessert Storm). Apparently, you have to have served after 9/11 to qualify.) After five years of riding, the Gold Star Ride Foundation has logged over 123,000 miles on a motorcycle; we've stopped in all 48 of the lower United States at least 4 times each; we've crashed twice; and We've personally met with 498 Gold Star Families. That's an average of 100 per year; nearly 10 per month - that we've met in person. Imagine what it is like to personally meet 10 people every month who you have never met before, who have all suffered a death in the family, and you are there to remember that fallen hero. Something completely different to the usual fare this time: a little while back I picked my five favourite spy novels for the Spybrary podcast. For a variation from the usual Never Mind The Podcasts fare, take a listen to what I picked, and why those in politics so often like spy stories: Anthony Price features, of course. As does (ssssh! former spy) Paddy Ashdown and US President Lyndon B Johnson, subject of perhaps the best non-fiction book and one with a brilliant narrator too. In coincidental related news, I discovered recently that the author of the standard book on the history of the early years of campaigning for proportional representation was a Communist, and possibly a Russian spy. The author is Jennifer Hart and the book is Proportional Representation: Critics of the British Electoral System 1820-1945. Show notes The Spybrary Podcast. The Spybrary Facebook group. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, we catch up with Anthony Price, executive director of the Gold Star Ride Foundation. It was back on September 16, 2019, when I first talked with Anthony Price in Episode 217 of the Law Abiding Biker Podcast. He has been very busy since that interview. You should definitely take a listen to that episode first.  The Gold Star Ride Foundation honors our nation's fallen heroes by taking care of their families. And we deliver the goods in person. And we go on bikes. In 2018, Anthony did a single motorcycle ride spanning 18,000 miles, 44 states, 56 days of solid riding, and made contact with more than 60 Gold Star families. Anthony wrote a book after this ride named, Yours, Very Sincerely And Respectfully. Since that 56-day motorcycle ride, Anthony has settled down just a bit. He is still laser-focused on helping Gold Star Families but is not on the road for that long of a span anymore. Although, he still rides his Harley many miles and days to meet with families from all over.  SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE Anthony says they help Gold Star Families in many different ways and it's tailored to their personal situation and needs. This is why Anthony meets in person with the families, to get a real feel of the history and situation. It can be helping a child with college fees or stocking cabinets with groceries. The foundation is just there to help in any way it can. Anthony says the privacy of the families is of the utmost importance and the foundation does not reach out to them. The families must contact the foundation to get things started. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! In 2018, Anthony did a single motorcycle ride spanning 18,000 miles, 44 states, 56 days of solid riding, and made contact with more than 60 Gold Star families. Anthony wrote a book after this ride named, Yours, Very Sincerely And Respectfully. The Gold Star Ride Foundation honors our nation's fallen heroes by taking care of their families. And we deliver the goods in person. And we go on bikes. In 2019, Anthony did 4 Rides, thus far, spanning 16 states, more than 20 days, nearly 10,000 miles, and has made contact with more than 30 families. Gold Star Families are defined as those who have lost a loved one who is serving or who has served in our armed forces. The loss of life does not have to be in combat or while deployed. The foundation is just there to help any way they can.   Anthony says privacy of the families is of the utmost importance and the foundation does not reach out to them. The families must contact the foundation to get things started.  CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! The Gold Star Ride Foundation will actively support, comfort, and provide education benefits to Gold Star Families throughout the United States and will provide these things directly with personal visits via motorcycle; and we will support those other organizations that work to assist in these same activities.
