Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com This is an interview with me, Ryan Urlacher, CEO of Law Abiding Biker Media. I was contacted by freelance writer Janalee Chmel as she wanted to write a story on me for one, if not two different magazine publications. The story is at least going to appear in a tattoo magazine called Inkspired. Yes, I have tattoos and am a biker, so she thought it was fitting. Janalee has been following the Law Abiding Biker Podcast, our YouTube Channel, our website articles, our online motorcycle store, and joined our email club to learn all she could about us. She was also very interested in our Exclusive Patron Membership and benefits. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE I recorded this interview and let you listen in as Janalee asks me a ton of great questions. She really digs in and gets behind the scenes of Law Abiding Biker Media and how I, Ryan Urlacher, founded and continue to run Law Abiding Biker Media with all its different aspects. I share many of my thoughts from the past 5 years since the inception of Law Abiding Biker Media back in March of 2013. I started this endeavor back then with nothing more than an iPad, microphone, and computer and used my daughter's closet as a soundproof recording room. Wow, we have come along way since then. We also discuss some of the hard times we've endured, such as our recent December 2017 online store storage facility fire where we lost all of our inventory and were not insured for it. I give you my deepest thoughts on the matter and what it's taking to try and rebuild that particular part of the business. We could not have gotten to where we are without the support of that community, which I am still humbled by each day. Law Abiding Biker Media, Inc Mission Statement: Helping as many bikers as we can worldwide using media to educate, entertain, and build a trusted online biker community. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com The Last Motorcycle on Earth is being filmed in Missoula, Montana by Writer, Director, and Cinematographer Eric Ristau on a shoestring budget and it's a true passion project for him. I interviewed Eric back on podcast episode #68 about his Sit, Stay, Ride Sidecar Dogs Documentary Film. In this episode, I have the pleasure of talking with Eric and his lead actor and co-producer of the film, Neil Olson. Also involved in the film is Eric's wife, Geneva Ristau, who is a co-producer and editor. Eric is part of the law abiding biker community and produces great films for bikers. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE It is not cheap to create films such as this and the expenses are piling up. So far, everything has been done out of pocket and on a tight budget. Eric has started an Indiegogo Fundraiser to assist with expensive items such as visual effects, sound mixing, and music composition and the fundraiser ends mid-May 2018. These things would give the film more value for the audience. There are rewards dependant on your contribution amount. Top rewards include a speaking role in the movie and more! It is yet to be determined if this will be a stand-alone film or spawn into a series. I will definitely be supporting Eric and the crew in moving forward! This motorcycle film looks so promising and I'm excited about it after watching the official trailer! The Last Motorcycle on Earth is a dramatic series about a vintage motorcycle collector and bike builder, Conrad Mendel, as he grapples with a new world of technology that threatens to destroy his passion and way of life. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! The Last Motorcycle on Earth Film Series Description: Motorcycles are outlawed. Gasoline is $20 per gallon. Self-driving cars are taking over. Silicon Valley and the United States Government have collaborated to push society toward a fully-autonomous transportation system. Motorcycles and riders are an easy first target in the drive to ban human-operated vehicles. Impossible, you say? Not so fast. Summary: The story centers on a small group of motorcyclists facing down the federal government and the tech industry as society is pushed to ban motorcycles, petroleum and transition to self-driving cars. Produced by professional indie filmmakers and avid motorcyclists in Missoula, Montana. This show is being made by the skin of our teeth and the thin tread on our tires. The first hour-long episode is finished, hours 2 and 3 are partially shot. They need our help to finish. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com This is part two of two of my podcast interview with Ray “Izod” Lubesky, the International President of the Iron Legacy Motorcycle Club. Ray Lubesky was one of the founding members of the Iron Order MC, but is now with the Iron Legacy MC. Lubeksy says he was expelled from the Iron Order MC along with other members over disagreements in the club's direction. At that point, Lubesky and others started the Iron Legacy Motorcycle Club which now has chapters in the United States and abroad. Of course, the Iron Order Motorcycle Club still exists under new leadership. Past Interview with Lubesky when he was with the Iron Order MC: Episode #65-Iron Order Motorcycle Club-Official Podcast Interrogation-Part 1 of 2 Episode #64-Iron Order Motorcycle Club-Official Podcast Interrogation-Part 2 of 2 We dive deep into everything you need to know about this club. The Iron Legacy claims to be a law abiding club and I can find no credible evidence to the contrary. The Iron Legacy MC is not a Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club (LEMC) nor do they claim such. They do have law enforcement members along with many other members from different walks of like. I ask Lubesky the tough questions in this interview as there is controversy that surrounds him and the Iron Legacy MC, which was also the case when he was with the Iron Order MC. You will definitely want to listen in on both podcast episodes dedicated to this interview. You won't hear an interview like this on any other motorcycle/biker podcast out there. The Iron Order is a very large international motorcycle club. Like all law-abiding biker clubs should do, they refuse to follow the “Confederation of Clubs” (COC) rules. The COC has no authority over free members of the motorcycling community. They have no authority over anyone unless you willfully let them control you. For the most part, only the criminal biker community gives them any attention. Criminal bikers make up far less than 1% of all bikers/motorcyclists on the road. Instead, the Iron Legacy is a part of the Alliance of Motorcycle Clubs, which is for law-abiding biker clubs. The Alliance was created to promote fellowship and networking amongst law-abiding biker clubs. There is no fee to belong to The Alliance, but there is an MOU. About the Iron Legacy MC: Taken from their website: On July 4, 2004 several men gathered in a garage in Indiana to found a unique law abiding club that was beholden to none. That club grew to become a huge family of brothers that paved the way for others to follow. In 2015 many of these brothers decided to start a new club to continue the Legacy of those founding principles and beliefs established in 2004. Our oaths to those founding principles and that club are intact, honored and followed to the letter as we carry that torch with us to this honorable endeavor of perseverance and continuance before those very ideals are lost to change forever. This is our opportunity to reignite the old school, traditional heritage of MC’s from the 50’s and early 60’s, following those traditions and close brotherhood all clubs seek. Our history is built on those premises established 14 years ago and we're starting our 15th year as Iron Legacy MC. Not a new beginning, but a return to the origins we swore our allegiance to that brought us together years ago with new horizons. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com Smaller Harley rider? This episode is a result of a voicemail we got from listener Stephanie Crabtree of Kansas City, Missouri. She asked about Harley's and smaller rider issues, mainly females. She wanted to know what would be a good Harley for her at 5-03 and 120 lbs. She wanted our opinions on this issue and that's exactly what we give in this episode. This begs the question-does size matter? Yah, I said it. Stephanie also wanted to know about females in a club setting and whether she should join one, so we touch on that too. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The size of Harley you purchase is often determined by your riding experience and not size necessarily, as some modifications to the larger models can be made. We'll talk about that later. Our suggestion for a newer smaller Harley rider is the Street or Sportster models as they are smaller, lighter, and cost less. You could move into one of the smaller Softail models from there. I will say that even if you're a smaller Harley rider, you shouldn't be scared off by the bigger Harley touring models. If you use proper riding and control techniques, you can easily handle a larger bike. Size doesn't really matter that much when controlling a motorcycle. Being bigger will help you if you have to lift the motorcycle after dropping it though. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! Jumping on a bigger taller bike can be a challenge for a smaller Harley rider when it comes to stopping and touching the ground. Some modifications can be made to the motorcycle such as lower rear shocks and a lower profile seat. You can certainly drop inches doing these mods. You could also wear boots with thicker type soles, thus adding inches of reach. These are just a few tricks. Be careful not to go to the extreme with the Harley mods or you'll lose the rideability of the bike. This article is just a glimpse into some of the information we reveal in this podcast episode, so you'll need to listen in for the rest. We also give our opinions on whether or not Stephanie should join a motorcycle club and what type. Shane and his dad Rick Riffel, a father-son team out of Huntersville, NC, have developed a unique quick detach luggage system for Harley-Davidson and Indian motorcycles. And it's the best in our opinion! In less than 10 seconds you can have your luggage off and on your Harley or Indian! And no more luggage straps slapping your paint. Those days are gone for good. The Rickrak is sturdy, yet light. Videos: Check out our YouTube Channel or this website and use the search bars to search for "Rickrak". We've done a multitude of free video reviews and installs of Rickrak products. CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! You also gotta check out Rickrak's high-quality Harley Saddlebag Safety Bolts. We've tested many similar products and we believe Rickrak's are the best out there by far. They are super high quality and used by the crew here. Beware of the cheap stock pins that hold your Harley bags on. There have been recalls and lawsuits over bags falling off over the years. And, never lose or leave your motorcycle gas cap again. If you're like me, I take it off and put it on top of the dirty pump. Yup, I've seen many biker friends leave the cap behind and they are not cheap at all to replace. Plus, you're picking up grime that can then be introduced to your fuel system. With the simple Gas Kap Keeper Magnet by Rickrak, you won't leave it behind anymore. It installs in seconds and you can then stick your gas cap to your tank, ignition, or anywhere else metal. And, it has a super awesome protective coat, so it won't scratch your paint. Listen in to this episode to get all these details and much more. The Harley dealership that performed the 1K break in service on this 2017 Road Glide did not do several things properly we found. You must hear our findings, so you can be aware what to look for! We also tell you why it's not worth your money to buy these oil change and service packages from the dealership when purchasing a new Harley. Brian will tell you the truth and he tested it. Both Oscar and I are full-time Police Motor Officers. Of course, in our off time is when we create all the content for Law Abiding Biker™ Media, Inc. We get into great detail about Police Motor Officer initial training schools and ongoing training. We discuss riding equipment and our thoughts on the different motorcycles used by different departments. I am assigned a Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Police Motorcycle, while Oscar is assigned Honda ST 1300 Police Motorcycle. We give you the pros and cons for both and I have trained on both. Not all Police Motor Officer training is the same. I am very blessed and get the best of initial and ongoing motorcycle training and get to compete. Oscar also gets great initial and ongoing training and will hopefully compete next year. There are departments that get very little initial Police Motorcycle Training and lack ongoing training, which is very dangerous in my opinion. If you ever wanted to know all about Police Motor Officers from the perspective of two actual Motor Officers, then this is a must listen to episode. Official Website: http://www.lawabidingbiker.com Podcast-We spent the day installing and filming two complete Harley exhaust systems. We installed a set of Bassani 2x2 Dual Head Pipes on Matt "Lurch" Couchman's 2015 Harley Road Glide Special. We installed Python True Dual Headpipes on Rick "Big Daddy" Kane's 2016 Harley Road Glide Special. Both these header systems get rid of your catalytic converter (cat), opening up the flow, increasing power & sound, & greatly reducing heat to the rider. Cats create a large amount of heat. Note: Always check your local, state, and federal law regarding motorcycle exhaust systems. Bassani: The Bassani pipes are nice because they are basically the exact same as the stock Harley head pipes minus the catalytic (cat) converter. This opens up the flow of exhaust, creates power & sound, and significantly cuts down on heat. They also re-use the stock chrome heat shields, which saves you money. These headers have both 18mm and 12mm O2 sensor ports. You can use your stock Harley o2 sensors with these headers. If you want to change your O2 sensors out and use wide-band O2 sensors then you can use the larger 18mm bungs. Plugs come with the headers for 12mm and 18mm, so you can plug one set off. Putting these headers on increased the sound of Lurch's bike, because of the cat now being gone. It also increased performance & cut out a ton of heat. Lurch was already running V&H Titan 450 OS slip-on mufflers. Remapping your motorcycle's Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) is necessary when you change the flow of exhaust or air intake on your Harley, such as we did in these exhaust installs. Make it easy and get a V&H Fuelpak 3 Electronic Fuel Injection Tuner from our store. We highly recommend this EFI tuner and we use it heavily here at Law Abiding Biker™ Media. Python: The Python true duals are just that, two separate pipes all the way from the heads to the rear. There is no chamber, so the back pressure is just not there. It's well known that true duals are not the number one choice for actual performance anyways. They look great and sound good though. These pipes only come with 12mm O2 bungs, which is great because you can use your stock Harley O2 sensors. You'd have to have 18mm bungs welded in if you wanted to use aftermarket wide-band O2 sensors. We didn't notice any significant increase or decrease in performance after install. However, we did notice a great improvement in sound and the reduction of heat from having no cats. We do have some back pressure because Big Daddy was already running Vance & Hines Eliminator 400 slip-on mufflers. Note: We want to thank our friends over at Revzilla for sending us both these exhaust systems for review. If you like this episode and find it useful, please consider purchasing any Bassani or Python systems or other products through our Revzilla Affiliate Link. No additional cost to you, but we get a small kickback if you click through and make a purchase. Official Website: http://www.lawabidingbiker.com Podcast-In this episode we talk all about the lack of no-fault personal injury protection (PIP) insurance for motorcycle riders in many states. As a motorcycle rider, you likely have no clue you don't have PIP coverage and that could leave you high and dry if you go down on your motorcycle. Of course, insurance companies just want your money and are not going to readily advise you of things like this. In Washington State, insurance companies are not required to provide PIP insurance to motorcyclists and so they don't. Remember, insurance companies are there to make money & they're good at it. How many insurance companies do you see going out of business? Note: We are no insurance experts, but here's some of what we learned through our own independent research. Many riders out there get a motorcycle and are so excited that they go down and get insurance quickly and leave, thinking they are properly covered. We've been riding for many years and this subject matter just came to our attention. Wow, we were surprised. I had an acquaintance go down on his motorcycle when a car pulled out in front of him and he was injured and had to be transported to the Hospital. His insurance agent now felt it was the time to tell him that he had no PIP coverage and he was on his own for all his medical bills. Then his employer provided insurance told him that it was the auto insurance companies responsibility. Meanwhile, all the bills were stacking up. I did some research and was so surprised that I was just learning of this. In Washington, it's actually State Law that what auto insurance doesn't pick up in an accident, a rider's employer provided insurance is required to take over and cover the bills. That is if you even have decent or any employer insurance at all. If you don't have employer-provided insurance then you are really screwed. Especially, if the other driver is not insured as in this incident. In this case, the employer insurance company was wrong and put on notice. They quickly realized it is their responsibility per State Law and they are now covering his medical bills, but not without sticking him with deductibles and co-pays. This is why you really must sit down with your motorcycle insurance agent and ask the tough "what if" questions. Make up situations and question them on what would happen. Your eyes might open very wide at their answers and your lack of coverage. I also have uninsured/underinsured motorist protection on my motorcycle insurance policy. There are different coverage amounts/maximums depending on your financial needs. If an uninsured driver or someone that doesn't have great insurance is at fault then I am covered that way. So, if the at-fault driver is covered by insurance, but not well, my insurance will pick up the rest of the bill up to my maximums set forth in my policy. There are insurance companies that do offer some very low-level personal injury coverage similar to no-fault PIP, but they don't call it that. No fault, means that medical bills for the motorcycle rider will be paid, regardless of who's fault the collision is. Beware of this PIP imitation coverage that insurance companies are advising you of and make sure it really is what you are looking for. Understand, the maximum for this alternate PIP coverage is very low. We found that you can pay several hundred extra hundred dollars a year for up to $10k no fault injury insurance for your motorcycle. You can pay more, but it seems they will not cover you for any more than $20k. That goes very quick when you are talking about medical bills. Some riders get that extra PIP imitation insurance in Washington State as a way to have coverage to pay their employee insurance deductibles and co-pays, since the employer insurance is going to have to cover it the medical bills anyways. If you ride a motorcycle, have no PIP insurance, and you have no employer-provided insurance in Washington State and other States and you go down at your fault, you have zero coverage for your medical bills. Sure, they'll replace your motorcycle, but they could care less about your injuries. That's a scary reality. I'd suggest you look at alternatives to getting some sort of protection or medical insurance and make sure to ask the tough questions to make sure you are covered should you go down. Make darn sure you have uninsured/underinsured motorcycle coverage. That way if it's not your fault and the other driver is uninsured or underinsured you are covered. Of course, you're covered somewhat if the at-fault driver is insured, but who knows what their insurance coverage limits are. Many motorists carry the bare minimum coverage. Oh, and what if the causing driver does a hit and run and can't later be located by law enforcement? Yup, another question you should ask your motorcycle insurance agent. Hit and run collisions happen daily in the jurisdiction I work in as a Law Enforcement Officer. This gets complicated as you can see and we here at Law Abiding Biker™ Media are just everyday motorcycle riders just like you. Official Website: http://www.lawabidingbiker.com Podcast-In this episode, we talk all about the new Cavalry Bluetooth half helmet from Sena. We put these helmets to the ultimate test in a real life motorcycle riding environment. What does this helmet mean and does it work for the real world everyday biker out there? We answer this and many other questions you may be asking yourself in this podcast episode. Note: If you appreciate our free videos, podcasts, and this information, please consider purchasing a Sena Cavalry Half Helmet directly through our store! The Cavalry has a Sena 10R headset Bluetooth system built right in and integrated nicely. The speakers are built right into the helmet and sound great for a helmet style headset. There are ear flaps that help direct the speaker sound into your ears. You may also want to check out my complete tutorial video on how to use the Sena Cavalry Bluetooth headset system. You can listen to your music wirelessly and make phone calls going down the freeway at 70+ mph. Yah-really, in a half helmet! You can also pair your Cavalry helmet with up to three other riders for group or single communications at a max distance of 1/2 mile was our findings. The Cavalry helmet does pair with the Sena Freewire Bluetooth transmitter/receiver. When the two are paired, this allows you to have wireless integration with your Harley-Davidson Boom!™ Box Infotainment System. You can give voice commands directly to the Boom Box system and hear anything coming out of the Boom Box such as music and GPS voice directions wirelessly inside your Cavalry helmet. The Calvary helmet is definitely geared more towards a touring rider with a fairing or windshield, which helps cut down wind noise, so you can hear the music, make phone calls, use rider-to-rider communications, and give voice commands. The capabilities of the Sena Cavalry helmet are greatly reduced if riding a motorcycle without a fairing due to the added wind noise. If just riding around town or slow country roads, you may be able to use the Cavalry helmet on a motorcycle without wind protection. The Sena 10R headset that is built into the Cavalry charges fully in about three hours and has about 10 hours talk time. There is also an FM radio built in with station presets. Of course, you can pair your Cavalry with Sena's beautiful smartphone app to easily manage settings. Using Sena's desktop app for MAC or Windows, you can plug your helmet in and update the software, which should be done immediately. Official Website: http://www.lawabidingbiker.com Podcast-You may hear or see less than reputable websites out there pushing their agenda and claiming that motorcycle profiling by law enforcement is some huge out of control issue in the United States. If you are reasonable, do your research, focus on the evidence and facts, and check who is behind pushing such legislation, you'll find the real truth. That is what we want to expose in this episode. You really need to listen in to be fully educated on the matter. Please understand, that I am totally against any and all "motorcycle profiling" by any law enforcement officer and it is improper. The very few possible cases involving such should be looked into for sure. But, let's not claim it's a big issue when it's not. Bikers/motorcyclists are stopped day after day all over the U.S. and all goes well, so focus on that fact for a moment. You'd see it on your nightly news for certain if it were some large ongoing issue. Additionally, as I've always stated, not every member of every 1%er outlaw motorcycle gang is committing crimes all day every day. However, it is a fact that there are large factions within these OMG's that have committed and are committing criminal offenses of all sorts. This has been proven over a very long period of time with many OMG members convicted of an array of crimes and serving long jail and prison terms. I have come across many OMG clubs over the years and never personally had a problem with them. On April 13, 2011, then Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire made effective a new law banning motorcycle profiling, which by the way was already not legal under long-standing laws that were already in place. That is my first point, and you'll see that this changed nothing, which is why it was easy for Gregoire to sign. This made the very few bikers behind the legislation happy, which is why I call it a "feel good" law. It changes nothing. Basically, the law added some minor training for new law enforcement officers, but it gives no specifics on length of that training or who monitors that it is occurring. Nothing changed as this sort of training was already in place. Oh, and the new law states that law enforcement agencies should put it in their policy manuals. Yup, most agencies already had profiling policies in place long before this law. When you see the pictures of when the law became effective, you'll see Gregoire with outlaw motorcycle gang member and 1%ers. I can't blame her, as she likely had no clue who was actually pushing such a law. She clearly was not educated on these matters and that they were a minority of actual bikers. Sure it sounds great to say "stop motorcycling profiling", but it's not really a problem. You didn't see law abiding bikers pushing the law or standing next to the Governor in photos. Nope, it was pushed mostly by outlaw motorcycle clubs and affiliates, which account for less than 1% of motorcyclists on the roads. The more protection they can get the better I guess was their stance. Or maybe they don't really know that it changed nothing. Be careful of the propaganda you'll see online making motorcycle profiling seem like this is some out of control issue. It just simply isn't. Be very careful and always do your own research. On these rarely viewed small websites, you'll see a few very old videos of select encounters with officers that they cling to. Do I think officers make mistakes or act badly at times? Heck yeah, that stuff happens. However, statistically, less than 1% of law enforcement officers in the United States are corrupt or "dirty" in some way. No other place in the world can claim anything even close to that. That is a better average than doctors, lawyers, and clergymen. We have the best law enforcement officers in the world and that's a fact. The propaganda continues with these minority of bikers putting out a survey they did as if it were valid. This is why you always need to look at what's behind a survey before you accept it. They call it the "National Motorcycling Profiling Survey 2015-2016". Sounds official, doesn't it? That's exactly what they want you to believe, so they can continue to push their agenda. Quick research shows that the San Diego Confederation of Clubs (COC) put the invalid survey out. The COC is not recognized by law abiding biker clubs for the most part. It has no power or authority over motorcyclists. It's a private organization that is mostly made up of outlaw motorcycle club members. The COC used Survey Monkey, a free online survey system. They sent the survey to all their acquaintances, outlaw clubs, and affiliates. They only had about 5,000 participants. I have to laugh........and this is called a "National Survey"? By running an improper and unofficial survey, they got the very results they were looking for. The surveyed a very small minority of persons that already bought into their hype. We don't even know if they surveyed actual bikers? That survey was not sent out to the good hard working law abiding bikers out there. If it had been, then the survey would definitely not have turned out in their favor. Their invalid survey, of course, claims that motorcycle profiling is some huge issue. Unfortunately, they are able to fool some with their efforts. As you'd suspect, the survey is now closed and the link is dead. Nobody really knows what was asked in the survey, except the small number that participated. Why would outlaw motorcycle clubs push such legislation and propaganda you ask? Easy, to try and further shield themselves from law enforcement scrutiny. Please understand, criminal profiling is actually legal and widely used by law enforcement today. Notice I didn't say "racial profiling" or "motorcycle profiling" but instead "criminal profiling". There is a huge difference. If you are classified as a 1%er outlaw motorcycle gang (OMG) by the federal government then you're already being criminally profiled. Somehow they think that when they get stopped for a valid traffic violation they can claim "motorcycle profiling", which will not likely be the case. If you are classified as a 1%er outlaw motorcycle gang (OMG) by the federal government then you're already being legally criminally profiled. Somehow, certain OMG members now think that when they get stopped for a valid traffic violation by law enforcement they can claim "motorcycle profiling", which will not likely be the case in a court of law. You must look at the objective and subjective intent of the officer in a case like this. You must also understand that law enforcement is not going to reveal every investigative tactic they use. I'm certain there are OMG members that are legally stopped pertinent to a much larger investigation, but the particular biker stopped may have no clue. If you play with fire, you'll eventually get burned. New States/Laws: Maryland: On Saturday, October 1, 2016 Maryland’s new anti-motorcycle profiling law went into effect. Maryland is now officially the second state to have an anti-motorcycle profiling law on the books. Washington State passed a similar measure in 2011. Boise, Idaho says no: A proposal banning law enforcement agencies from profiling motorcycles has crashed and burned in the Idaho Senate. Senate members spiked the proposal Wednesday, voting 13-22 after a lengthy debate over the need of bill despite receiving unanimous support from the House several weeks before. The bill would have prohibited police officers from stopping bikers for riding motorcycles or wearing biker garb. However, some critics said police should have legitimate reasons for stopping all citizens, not just motorcyclists. Here is what the Washington State law actually states: (Nothings really changed at all) RCW 43.101.419 Motorcycle profiling. (1) The criminal justice training commission shall ensure that issues related to motorcycle profiling are addressed in basic law enforcement training and offered to in-service law enforcement officers in conjunction with existing training regarding profiling. (2) Local law enforcement agencies shall add a statement condemning motorcycle profiling to existing policies regarding profiling. (3) For the purposes of this section, "motorcycle profiling" means the illegal use of the fact that a person rides a motorcycle or wears motorcycle-related paraphernalia as a factor in deciding to stop and question, take enforcement action, arrest, or search a person or vehicle with or without a legal basis under the United States Constitution or Washington state Constitution. We have done quite a few projects on it and of course, we filmed them for you. Check out our video titled, Install Forward Controls on a Harley Davidson Softail or Dyna-Guide & Instructions. We recently put new 12" West Coast MX T-Bars on this bike and they look awesome! Check out our video titled, Install Handlebars Harley Dyna, Softail, Sportster | Extend Wires & Cables. The 2016 Dyna Low Rider S (special) was the first for this model. Harley is making some "special" models. Although they are not a "CVO" model, they are somewhat of a "one off" bike and they have some special things about them. Harley seems to be doing this with other models too. Our 2016 Dyna Low Rider S came stock with the Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110 engine (1,801 cc) on this small frame bike. And she really rips! It also came stock with cruise control and throttle by wire. It has a cable clutch and not hydraulic clutch, which we would have preferred. It also comes with upgraded suspension, the six-speed transmission, ABS brakes, and dual front disc brakes. We put Vance & Hines Short Shots Staggered exhaust and we tuned the electronic fuel injection (EFI) using a Vance and Hines Fuel Pak 3. The bike came with a stage one Screamin Eagle air intake. I read your information and there is something that you should know. I'm a retired Police Officer from York Region and have had bikes for 40 odd years. I have about 14 now. In August of this year I purchased a new Harley Ultra Limited Low. When I picked up my new bike, they showed my how the security system works and taking their advise, I changed the code. Safe and secure! In October I had my bike in the garage and attempted to start it. It would not start and a member came up to trailer it to the dealership. This gentleman made several attempts to start the bike without any luck. He asked me for my security code and I told him I had forgotten it. He then told me that he could override my code and start the bike. I was curious and again asked him how he could override my security code. He told me that the dealership people have the knowledge to do this override! Interesting. So basically dealership employees could steal my bike! Turns out there was a module in the starter circuit that burnt out. They fixed it the next day..good service! Official Website: http://www.lawabidingbiker.com Podcast-In this episode we talk about Rick (Big Daddy) Kane's large-scale project he just completed on his 2001 Harley-Davidson Road King, named "Chola". This bike has a ton of rich history and you really need to go back and listen to Podcast Episode #106, where Rick breaks it all down for you. That will help you have a more true appreciation for this current project. Check out the Official Law Abiding Biker Store! Rick decided to do a full electronic fuel injection (EFI) to carburetor conversion on Chola. Yah, this is not something you hear about being done very often, but it can be and is done on occasion. Of course, there are reasons to do something as drastic as this. In Rick's case, he was having troubles with the older Magneti Marelli style EFI system Harley used from 1995-2001. These systems did not utilize O2 sensors in the exhaust for tuning. TheseMagneti Marelli systems are well known for causing problems and annoyances. In 2002, Harley-Davidson switched and started using the Delphi EFI systems on their motorcycles, which are more reliable and utilize exhaust O2 sensors for proper tuning. This Magneti Marelli system left us stranded late one night in the middle of nowhere in the pitch black. I followed and Rick was barely able to limp the bike back to town. Listen in as we tell the story. These types of EFI problems require expensive computers to properly diagnose. So, Rick took it to a friend of ours at a dealership to diagnose it with their computers. Things were never just right after several times to the shop to diagnose and Rick spent about $800. He actually had to push his Road King home about 1 1/2 miles! It ended up being recurring annoying problems with the cam timing sensor and neutral throttle sensor. Rick decided he'd had enough with the Magneti Marelli EFI system and wanted to get rid of it all together. He could have converted to the new Delphi EFI system but has always loved carburetors. Rick made the decision to do a full conversion from Magneti Marelli EFI to a carburetor system instead. Once and for all, he wanted no more problems with his 2001 Harley-Davidson Road King. Listen in as Rick describes the exact process he went through and the exact parts he used to make the carb conversion. He lays it all out for you in this episode and tells of what carburetor he went with. Rick is a wealth of knowledge on this subject and I learned a ton from him. He has some great resources for you if you might be contemplating this project. Listen in as we discuss Cody's incident and weigh in on the laws regarding appropriate following distances for motorcyclists. We also discuss civil infractions and the burden of proof in comparison to civil litigations and insurance company decisions. Each state has their own laws in regards to appropriate following distances. It is hard to paint a broad picture and things will vary on how both Law Enforcement and insurance companies deal with following too close. Let me share Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 46.61.145 since that is where I reside. Following too closely. (1) The driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicles and the traffic upon and the condition of the highway. (2) The driver of any motor truck or motor vehicle drawing another vehicle when traveling upon a roadway outside of a business or residence district and which is following another motor truck or motor vehicle drawing another vehicle shall, whenever conditions permit, leave sufficient space so that an overtaking vehicle may enter and occupy such space without danger, except that this shall not prevent a motor truck or motor vehicle drawing another vehicle from overtaking and passing any like vehicle or other vehicle. (3) Motor vehicles being driven upon any roadway outside of a business or residence district in a caravan or motorcade whether or not towing other vehicles shall be so operated as to allow sufficient space between each such vehicle or combination of vehicles so as to enable any other vehicle to enter and occupy such space without danger. This provision shall not apply to funeral processions. Cody's incident demonstrates that insurance companies will find you at fault when rear-ending another vehicle regardless if it had working lights/signals or not. They seem to follow the rule that motorcyclists need to leave enough following distance to stop even if the vehicle they are following stops suddenly, stops for no reason, or does not have lights/signals. It really seems to be the complete responsibility of the following motorcycle rider to make certain they have all the room necessary to stop in any circumstance. Regardless of insurance, as riders, we must be mindful of our safety first. Insurance company decisions are secondary. If we don't leave a safe following distance to avoid a collision, we may not get a second chance. We all get comfortable and think we can stop faster than we can on our motorcycles. I say, if you are following a car and it seems to be a safe distance, double it and you're probably safe. It is hard for our mind to calculate time and distance real time. We tend to feel overly confident when riding our motorcycles at times. Of course, this is dependant on what brake system you have, the weight of your bike, tires, etc. After much practice, you'll realize that you'll gain confidence and improve your motorcycle emergency braking skills, thus stopping faster. A safe following distance is always the best practice, so you don't have to emergency brake. The two-second rule Under normal conditions, the two-second rule is an easy way to make sure you have left enough following distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front, no matter what speed you're traveling at. To check if you are traveling two seconds behind the vehicle in front: watch the vehicle in front of you pass a landmark - such as a sign, tree or power pole - at the side of the road as it passes the landmark, start counting 'one thousand and one, one thousand and two' if you pass the landmark before you finish saying those eight words, you are following too closely - slow down, pick another landmark and repeat the words to make sure you have increased your following distance. Note: Consider a 3-second rule to be much safer. 2 seconds is the minimum. Fresh out of the garage, we break it down for you and give you some must know information, so listen in. We also had Lawdog "LD" in the studio with an update on our upcoming 2017 Canada motorcycle trip where we will be meeting up with Patron Members of Law Abiding Biker™. We are installing 12" Westcoast MX T-bars on the Dyna Low Rider S & internally wiring them! We lifted this baby up with our beloved TITAN SDML-1000D-XLT MOTORCYCLE LIFT TABLE! Lurch and I broke the Harley down and we're filming the entire project for you as usual. We will eventually add this video to our very popular collection of Harley-Davidson handlebar install videos! Check out the Official Law Abiding Biker Store! There is not much information out right now in catalogs and online on the Dyna Low Rider S, as it was a special production bike. So, we broke it down and measured the stock clutch cable and front upper brake line. We figured out how much over stock length we'd need to go to accommodate these 12" T-bars. Armed with proper cable/line lengths, we ordered up what we'd need and had the shipping expedited, so we can put the bike back together and finish the project. Official Website: http://www.lawabidingbiker.com Podcast-In this episode Chewy, Lurch, and I tell you everything we have learned about the new Sons of Anarchy spinoff pilot that has been ordered by FX called the Mayans MC that will start shooting in March 2017. The Mayans MC show is officially happening, according to FX. This is no longer a rumor, it's an official series on the network's schedule. Sons Of Anarchy aired its finale in 2014 and many of us have longed for a spinoff series. SOA was the highest-rated ongoing drama series in FX history. We hope some of that greatness can spill over into this new show. Production on the pilot is set to begin in March and will be set in a post Jax Teller world. The show is said to follow EZ Reyes, a Mayan prospect, who will struggle with his desire for vengeance against the local cartel and his need for the women in his life to respect him. The show is set on the Mexi/Cali border. The Mayans, a Latino MC, controlled Northern, CA and all of Nevada during the SOA series. Emilio Rivera played the role of the President of Mayans Oakland Chapter in the SOA Series. It hasn't been confirmed that he's reprising his role as Marcus Alvarez, the president of Mayans MC, but his social networks have let fans know that he is involved with the show in some fashion. Both he and Sutter have posted numerous photos of themselves, the Mayans, and teases about the show. It seems Charlie Hunnam, who played Jax Teller, in the original SOA series will not be involved in the Mayan's MC show at all. The show will be directed by “Sons” creator Kurt Sutter from a script from Sutter and Elgin James. Sutter will serve as executive producer, with James as co-executive producer. We think between these two individuals we should get a very creative and interesting show. Mayans MC will most likely take the Tuesday night slot that was previously held by Sons Of Anarchy. While an official premiere date hasn't been released by the FX network or Kurt Sutter, the show is expected to debut in Fall 2017. Mayans MC will most likely take the Tuesday night slot that was previously held by Sons Of Anarchy. There is much speculation on the exact story line of the show. Will we see Sons of Anarchy club members appear in the series? Or will they not integrate SOA at all? The show may go completely in its own direction. You must listen in to this episode to get our predictions, insight, and opinions. Official website: http://www.lawabidingbiker.com Podcast-A special thanks to guest Evan Grist of Fort Collins, Colorado, who is an electrical engineer and affiliated with RMSTATOR, a manufacturer of high-end power sports electrical parts. Via Skype, we were able to bounce our questions off Evan. In this episode, we'll teach you everything you need to know about your Harley-Davidson charging system. We break it down to what bikers actually need to know in an understandable way. Your Harley-Davidson, or most motorcycles for that matter, use the same type of charging system, often referred to as a permanent magnet alternator. In a car, an alternator is belt driven. In a motorcycle, it is driven by magnets embedded around the flywheel. The flywheel is permanently affixed to the crankshaft, which is spinning with the engine RPM's. Check out the Official Law Abiding Biker Store! So, the easy way to generate power is with a stator inside that flywheel magnet system. A stator is a metal core and is made up of a bunch of stamped steel plates that are riveted together. It's insulated with some sort of powder coat or plastic to protect the wires. There are windings wrapped around it, which are a particular gauge of solid core copper wire that's insulated. So, you end up with coils of wire wrapped around the stator. Those are attached to a wiring harness, which exits the side case of the motor & heads to the regulator/rectifier. And finally, to the battery to charge it. With the motor running, you have your crankshaft spinning with the flywheel attached to the end with the magnets spinning outside of the stator. Those magnets spinning past and around the metal core with wire wrapped around it generates electricity. And there you have it. You may hear this referred to as an alternator at times. If you hear someone call this an alternator on a motorcycle, they are generally referring to the entire package, the flywheel and stator. You do see Harley-Davidson refer to it as an alternator in their manuals. Regulator/Rectifier: The alternate current (AC) current created by the stator cannot be sent directly to the battery. It needs to be prepared, limited, and changed to direct current (DC) to correctly charge your battery. The current would destroy your battery if not first sent to the regulator/rectifier. In a motorcycle, the stator flywheel set up creates electricity and sends it to a separate regulator/rectifier. In a car, the rectifier/regulator is built into the alternator. On a Harley-Davidson, you'll recognize the separate regulator/rectifier as a little black box with cooling fins machined into it and it often times sits up front behind the rear tire attached to the frame. Regulator/Rectifier=2 Functions: Rectifier: The rectifier is responsible for converting the alternate current (AC) current created by the stator to direct current (DC). Basically, it chops off the negative polarity portion of the current that the battery can't use. Then it passes the current to the battery. Regulator: The regulator protects the battery voltage and when the battery voltage climbs too high it shuts off current to ground and bleeds it off as heat. That is what the heat fins on the regulator box are for, to dissipate the heat. If the regulator did not monitor the voltage to your battery it would destroy it. Note: Often times a bad regulator can do just that, send too much voltage to the battery. Battery: All the current required to run your motorcycle comes from your battery. The stator system charges your battery and replenishes it. You could actually run your motorcycle just fine for some time without a working stator as the battery has reserve current. Of course, the battery would eventually die. Aftermarket High Output Stators: If you add too many electrical accessories then you'll come a point that your stator just can't produce enough current to keep the battery charged. There may be subtle hints over time-like your bike starter is sluggish and has trouble cranking the motor over. There are available aftermarket high output stators. However, it is not wise to install an aftermarket high output stator just because. You should only do this if you actually need it to keep your battery charged. If your motorcycle is not consuming all that extra current the high output stator is producing then you end up dumping that entire load on your regulator. This is a quick way to ruin your regulator by overheating it. Can I test the load my electrical accessories are creating? You can look in your service manual and see what your stator is rated for in amps. Then you can find your electrical accessories (lights, heated grips, heated seats, stereo amps etc) you have added and find out what wattage they are rated for. A good rule of thumb is you can convert to power by multiplying the stator amps (current) x the battery (voltage). You can use 13 as a good all around battery voltage. That is a good healthy battery staying charged just above 12 volts. Example only: Let's say the stator is rated for 10 amps x 13-volt battery: 10 x 13=130 watt charging system. So you have a 130-watt charging system in this example. Now, you can take the wattage of all those electrical accessories and see if you're under or over your 130 watts and how much you have to play with. Volt Meters: You can check your system by putting a volt meter on your battery. Or add a volt meter gauge to your motorcycle. I have a Vance & Hines Fuelpak 3 Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) tuner on my Harley. It syncs to my smartphone wirelessly via Bluetooth and I can monitor real-time data such as voltage. My smartphone is attached to my handlebars with my Biker Gripper Mount. You can turn all your electrical accessories on and make sure you have your engine at a good regular riding RPM, so your stator is charging at full output. Note: if your meter is reading anywhere at or above 13 volts you are in great shape. Remember, your Harley is a 12-volt system, so just above that means it can keep up. 13 volts is the point where the battery is not discharging with all your accessories on. Regulation Point: Generally speaking, 14.6 volts is a hard set regulation point on most 12 volt systems such as a Harley. Basically, this does not allow the regulator to send voltage to the battery any higher than 14.6 volts. Harley Charging System Failures: Stator Failure: If the stator fails, your battery will no longer be charging when you're riding your motorcycle. Often times, a short can happen in the windings around the stator. The insulation on the wires can wear down over time or a wire can break. If the copper inside the insulation rubs against the flywheel as an example, you could have the windings short to ground. This is a problem because it all loops back to the regulator through your battery negative connection. The motor, the frame, and everything metal on the motorcycle are tied to battery negative. Battery negative is tied to the regulator and the regulator is tied to the stator and it loops back. If you have a short to ground then you have no output from the stator. Multi-Meter & Testing Stator: Recommended Multi-Meter Tester Here (affiliate link) Find where your 3 stator wires are. On a Harley, this is up front near where the inner primary connects to the motor case. Right by the seam. The three wires will track straight from there to your regulator/rectifier. You'll want to measure the resistance between each pair of those wires. The rule of thumb is to look for a low number, around 0.7 Ohms due the size of wire used for this application. You can really measure anywhere under an Ohm. The main thing you want to see is that you are getting the same number between the three wires. Test 1: Set your multi-meter to the lowest resistance range it has. Take the three measurements. If they are all the same then your stator windings are in tact and all three coils are in good shape. Test 2 Measure from each of those three stator wires to a good frame ground, such as a good clean motor mount bolt, battery negative terminal, or whatever you have that is good and clean and connected to the metal of the motor. Using this test, you should see an "open". You should see an infinite resistance, no connection, no short from any winding to ground. **If you pass both these tests you can be 99% certain your stator is good. Regulator/Rectifier Failure: Here is a technical document Evan Grist wrote on testing a rectifier. Multi-Meter Regulator Testing: Assuming your rectifier part of the unit is still working, you'll see current flowing to your battery. You will see your battery voltage increasing because it has current flowing into it. If you suspect the regulator part of the unit is not working, you can set your multi-meter to the "DC Volts" setting, generally a 20-volt setting. Then connect it to your battery, start your motorcycle, and rev it up. Ideally, if the regulator is working fine you'll see the battery voltage increase from around 12.8-13.2 volts at idle and increase when the motor is revved up to around 14.6 volts. **If you see results above 15 volts then you likely have a bad regulator. If you were to ride with 15 volts going to the battery then it will be destroyed. RMSTATOR MOSFET Regulator/Rectifier Upgrade Kits for Harley: The standard Harley regulator uses an electrical component in it called an SCR, silicon controlled rectifier, which is a little electrical switch. When the regulator sees your voltage climbing to high to the battery it shorts the stator wires to ground, which kills all the output from that leg of the stator. The regulators that use the silicon controlled switches are just not very efficient. The electrical switches do not shut on and off quickly and they get very hot. That heat over time can cause regulator failure. A MOSFET, Metal Oxide Semi Conductor Field Effect Transistor, regulator is a very nice upgrade. This transistor runs much cooler, switches much quicker, has simpler circuitry to control it, which in turn means a longer life. Additionally, your battery will be much happier as it is much more efficient. When the MOSFET switches current on and off to the battery it is much more efficient, so you end up with much more stable battery voltage. You will see much less voltage fluctuation at the battery, which increases battery life. Use coupon code EGPOD10 for 10% off anything on the RMSTATOR website! So, you get a longer regulator and battery life! Evan Grist recommends the following regulator/rectifier kit for your Harley-Davidson electrical system. Universal Mosfet Harley Voltage Regulator Rectifier from RMSTATOR. Harley-Davidson Specific Regulator Rectifier from RMSTATOR. If you upgrade your stator, you'll definitely want to upgrade your regulator/rectifier as it may be working harder regulating the additional current. Official Website: http://www.lawabidingbiker.com Podcast-In this episode Chewy, Lurch, and I discuss the new CHIP's movie scheduled to release in theaters March of 2017. We break it down on what we've learned and give you some insight into whether you should go watch it. CHIP's was a classic TV show and I loved watching it as a young boy. The show ran 6 seasons, from 1977-1983. The movie stars Dax Shepard, who will be playing Officer Jon Baker and Michael Pena who will fill the role of Officer Frank “Ponch” Poncherello. Shepard also wrote and directed the new movie. Other cast includes Vincent D'Onofrio, Adam Brody, Rosa Salazar, Vida Guerra, and Kristen Bell. Principal photography began on October 21, 2015 in Los Angeles. The film is scheduled to be released on March 24, 2017 by Warner Bros. Pictures. This movie is really not a replication of the original CHIP's TV series. Instead, it is an action comedy and Hollywood put their flare on it for sure. There are high-speed chases, motorcycles, and explosions. There looks to be much comedy between Pena and Shepard in the trailer. Many relate the comedy between Shepard and Pena as that of a Lethal Weapon movie. So, just go into this new movie with the mindset that it will be nothing like the original TV show and instead, a completely different experience. The story line is that there are corrupt officers in the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Pena is sent in by the FBI to infiltrate. Shepard's real-life wife, actor Kristen Bell, is also in the movie. She stars as Shepards "Trashy, Estranged Wife" Shepard is fairly skilled on a motorcycle and did his own stunts, while Pena looks to not be such a good rider and a dolly is seen balancing his motorcycle in many behind the scene photos. Interestingly, they chose to ride Honda ST 1300's for the movie. It is our understanding that the real California Highway Patrol Motors Officers currently ride Harley-Davidson motorcycles with some left over BMW's they are phasing out. So, we're not sure why they chose Honda's, but hey it's Hollywood. They rarely get anything accurate. Our opinion is that it will be worth seeing this new CHIP's movie. It's got motorcycles, action, explosions, and some great humor from what we can see from the trailer. Official Website: http://www.lawabidingbiker.com Podcast-In this episode we break down the old myth that you should go out during the winter every so often to start your motorcycle and let it idle for a bit to warm it up. Many think this will keep things lubricated and that it is good for the motor to do this. Heck, I used to do it because that's what my father always did with sitting cars. This particular subject matter came up in the Patron Only Private Facebook Group. If your not in this group you should consider it, because a ton of reliable information and discussions are in there. Many bikers can't ride during certain snow months and head out to the old garage, fire up their motorcycle, drink a beer, maybe have a cigar, and let their bike run for 15-20 minutes. They shut her down and head back into the house. Is this a good practice? Now that I am more educated, I realize this is actually a bad thing to do to your motorcycle's engine or any engine for that matter. You're better off just letting your motorcycle sit unless you are actually going to ride it for a fair distance. You see, idling your motorcycle in the cold not only wastes fuel, but it's also stripping oil from critical components that help your engine run, namely the cylinders and pistons. Normally, your motorcycle engine runs on a mixture of air and vaporized fuel. When that mixture enters a cylinder, a piston compresses it, which generates a combustion event, powering the engine. New Patrons: Tony Falvo of Coatesville, Pennsylvania Roy Skaggs David Duffey of Jackson, Tennessee If you appreciate the content we put out and want to make sure it keeps on coming your way then become a Patron too! There are benefits and there is no risk. You can also support us via a flat donation: When it's cold outside the gasoline is less likely to evaporate. Your motorcycle purposely runs "rich" and compensates for this initially by adding more gasoline to the air-vapor mixture. That's the problem, you're actually putting extra fuel into the combustion chamber to make it burn and some of it can get onto the cylinder walls. Gasoline is a great solvent and it can actually wash oil off the walls if you run your motor in those cold idle conditions for an extended period of time. Over time, that can have a detrimental effect on the lubrication and life of things like piston rings and cylinder liners. This can have a serious effect on the overall operating life of your engine. Myth busted; idling your motorcycle does not prolong the life of your engine; rather it shortens it. Your motorcycle doesn't run rich the entire winter. It only happens when the gasoline is cold. Once your engine warms up to about 40 degrees Fahrenheit, the car transfers to normal fuel-consumption rates. You might think by idling your motorcycle, you're warming it up, which will prevent this problem. Idling doesn't really get the engine up to temperature, and until that happens the engine control module (ECM) on the engine is going to keep sending a rich-fuel mixture to the cylinders so that it can ensure that enough is evaporated for a consistent combustion event. The best and only real way to get your motorcycle engine's temperature up is to actually go out and ride! If you can't ride because of ice and snow, then just don't start your bike at at all. When you ride in those colder temperatures, letting your motor run for about thirty second to a minute is a good standard before you take off. Once you take off, don't just immediately open up the throttle and rip on it. Ride gently for a bit to give it time to warm up or you'll put unnecessary stress on your engine. It can take 5-15 minutes for your engine to warm up depending on the driving conditions. Also, because your motorcycle is going to run a bit rich before the engine reaches 40 degrees Fahrenheit, you're going to get lower gas mileage than usual. Definitely keep your motorcycle battery on a tender or it'll go bad! This is a great one! Click on the picture to check it out. (affiliate link/support us) Why the Myth? The myth started in an age when all motorcycle engines relied on carburetors. Then came the standard application of fuel injection. The main difference is that electronic fuel injection comes with a sensor that feeds the cylinders the right air-fuel mixture to generate a combustion event. Carburetor-run motorcycles lacked this important sensor. If your gasoline was too cold, your car wouldn't run rich, it would simply stall out. In those days, it was important to get the carburetor warm before driving. Those days are gone........ Another Private Patron Only Facebook Group Subject we covered: Oscar writes: Wanted to let you all know about my K&N filter problem so you can check yours out before the big Sturgis trips. Recently I found that my stage 1 K&N filter (aftermarket stage 1 kit 2013 Limited) looked like it had deformed. I reached my finger to the point where the intake met the filter and found an open air gap large enough to get my pinky into the intake chamber. I checked with our local service manager and one of our dealership mechanics and found it happens but is very uncommon. I checked the KN and went with the Harley filter for now because no one had a replacement. Check your filters, they should be tight against the intake shoulder. With mine I could literally pry it up off the intake without much force. We don't want to be riding through any large storms with a faulty filter. ________________________________________________________________ CHECK US OUT AND SUBSCRIBE: Website: http://www.LawAbidingBiker.com Email & Voicemail: http://www.LawAbidingBiker.com/Contact Phone Hotline: 509-731-3548 Twitter: https://twitter.com/LawAbidingBiker Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/lawabidingbiker YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/scrappy587 Google Plus Page: https://plus.google.com/b/104041070580228657262/+Lawabidingbiker587 Instagram: http://instagram.com/lawabidingbiker RSS: feed://www.LawAbidingBiker.com/feed iTunes Direct Link to Podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/law-abiding-biker-podcast/id622424087 Stitcher Radio: http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/law-abiding-biker-podcast TuneIn Radio: http://tunein.com/radio/Law-Abiding-Biker-p562288/
Official Website: http://www.lawabidingbiker.com Podcast-This is part 2 of a two-part podcast series all about motorcycles and big rigs sharing the roads we all travel. There are inherent dangers when riding a motorcycle near or around a semi-truck, but you can minimize them. We have professional truck driver and Patron Member Russell Roberts of Gallatin, Tennessee in the Law Abiding Biker Studio to weigh in on the issue. We also have professional truck driver and Patron Member Steven Stratton of Stockton, California weighing in remotely via Skype. These guys get to see it from both sides, both as truck drivers and as motorcycle riders, so you really have to listen in to this conversation. They tell us exactly what to be careful of and how to properly ride around semi-trucks. Semi-truck recap tires can blow out at any time and if that happens and a chunk hits you as a motorcyclist, you'll loose and that can be very serious or fatal. This can be a huge chunk of half of a tire or more! You've all seen the tire carcasses laying in the freeways. Back off or get past the semi-truck when riding. Plus, if you're hanging out on either side of the truck, you are likely in a large blind spot if the driver decides to move over. These blind spots are called the "No-Zones". As a highly trained motorcycle rider, I can't tell you how many motorcyclists I see following trucks and cars too closely. The problem with trucks specifically, is that if you're following so close and a semi-truck easily straddles large debris in the road, by the time you see it coming out from the bottom of that truck it's likely too late. If you hit large debris on a motorcycle it can be serious if not fatal. Why put yourself in that situation? You're not saving any time, but only putting yourself and others in danger. Back off and then pass when it's safe. Time and distance are your friends, especially when riding a motorcycle. Also, some semi-trucks have very long noses and a there is a large No-Zone directly in front. That is because the driver literally can't see over the nose and down. It is a fair distance out before the driver can actually see what's in front of him/her. A motorcycle will never be seen and it's clear what happens if you're run over by a semi-truck. Yah, you'll be the loser on that one. That is a huge reason to not suddenly move and change lanes right in front of a semi. Not only can't they slow or stop quickly, but they then can't see you when your up there. If you appreciate the content we put out and want to make sure it keeps on coming your way then become a Patron too! There are benefits and there is no risk. To help you understand the No-Zone better, a good rule of thumb is that if you can't see the driver in the side mirrors then they can't see you. You don't want to be in those blind spots on a motorcycle when a truck driver decides to move left or right. So, throttle up a bit and get past the truck or back off and give distance. Don't get caught in those spots at all costs. These are just a few of the highlights of our in-depth discussion and you'll really need to listen in to gain more knowledge and understanding. It's worth your time as a motorcycle rider to get all the information as it could save your life. At the end of the day, pull your head out and use good common sense. You're not invincible. Official Website: Podcast-In this episode we discuss the Discovery Channel series called Sacred Steel Bikes. The show released in late 2016 for a 6 episode run. At the time of this article, Discovery Channel has yet to renew Sacred Steel Bikes for a second season. Nobody is sure if the show will even be renewed. Sacred Steel Bikes is based out of East LA and is about a group of guys that are part of a motorcycle club called Douche Larouche. It seems the members have full-time jobs and after work and on weekends they get together to build bikes in a shared shop space. Jason Wilson is the organizer of these custom bike build jobs and is a union sheet metal worker by day. He is trying to take Sacred Steel Bikes to the next level as a business, but can't seem to drum up any buyers. The bikes Sacred Steel build are old school custom choppers. They are really cool to look at and much respect goes out to these guys for their talents. However, in a saturated market of custom bike builders, it's going to be hard to find buyers for these niche bikes and Jason is learning that. The bikes they build are custom "bar hoppers" at best and not built with any comfort, rideability, or reliability considerations. They'd be fun to ride local and to look at while drinking a beer with buddies. They're definitely not for any sort of distance riding. It seems Jason knows this issue and by the October 17th season finale episode, he's attempting to build a custom bike that's more rideable to appeal to a larger biker consumer base. In early episodes, Jason is purposely poking fun at older Discovery Channel bike build shows such as American Choppers and their endless episodes of always having to make a deadline. Funny thing is, after several episodes Jason himself is running bike build deadlines and the show tends to focus on that. So, it mimics several other past Discovery Channel motorcycle build shows now. It seems that to sell commercial spots there has to be exciting down to the minute deadlines. The show is fun to watch, so I say give it a try. There are many things that will make you laugh and many sacred-steel-no-ball-slappingshenanigans that go on around the shop and very similar to things that go on around here at Law Abiding Biker™ Podcast & Media. Official Website: http://www.lawabidingbiker.com Podcast-So, you may have heard the vicious rumors going around that Harley-Davidson dealerships are voiding warranties if you install aftermarket exhaust, remove catalytic converters, or install electronic fuel injection (EFI) tuners on your new 2017 model equipped with the Milwaukee-Eight motor. The unreliable motorcycle forums are full of bad information because nobody actually researches the matter. Well, I did that for you and talked to many sources inside Harley-Davidson dealerships. Some of these rumors got started because recently the Screamin Eagle Super Tuner was banned by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Harley-Davidson was fined $12 million dollars. So, nothing is new with the new 2017 Milwaukee-Eight 107 or 114 ci motors in regards to warranties. For years, all Harley owners have been at risk of having a warranty voided for installing aftermarket exhaust, removing catalytic converters, or adding EFI tuners. Clearly, dealerships are not supposed to remove catalytic converters, but it's fine to install new Vance & Hines or other aftermarket head pipes without them? The confusion goes on from there. The fact of the matter is that you're still at risk and internal Harley-Davidson policies have not changed. But, Harley-Davidson leaves much discretion to its dealerships to handle matters such as this. So, what does this really mean for you as a Harley-Davidson owner? Make sure you have a very open line of communication with your local dealership service writer and mechanics. Ask them point blank if they are in the business of voiding your motorcycle warranty if you change pipes, intake, or add an EFI tuner. I can tell you that most will not void your warrant and have not voided warranties for years as it's just bad business all the way around. Especially at these times when Indian and Victory are banging on Harley's doors trying to get a bigger chunk of the market. If your dealership says they will actually void your Harley warranty for such things then never step foot in that dealership again and tell all your Harley buddies. That would be a personal choice by that particular dealership and I'd make certain they got very little business. You'll have to listen in to this podcast episode to get the full scoop and find out what other things we learned and other tips we give! Official Website: http://www.lawabidingbiker.com Note: Law Abiding Biker™ Media is not recommending you use any oils in your Harley engine that are not officially approved and/or recommended by Harley-Davidson. We are only relaying information that is known to many in the biker community. You are solely responsible for what you decide to do to your bike. Okay, so you're out on a motorcycle road trip and don't have any synthetic oil or "approved" oil for your Harley-Davidson, but need some suddenly. There are no close stores for motorcycle oil, but the local truck stop has heavy duty 15W-40 diesel oil available. Can you throw some of that into your Harley motor and be on down the road? Maybe you are you on an extreme budget and can't afford full Synthetic motorcycle oil, such as 20W-50 Amsoil, which we use here at Law Abiding Biker™ Media in all our bikes. Check out theses podcasts: Amsoil Synthetic Vs. Harley Davidson Synthetic Oil | The Scoop (Episode #26) Dynacycle Semi-Synthetic Oil Real World Testing By Bikers | Amsoil or Dynacycle? Does it Matter? (Episode #95) Oscar is on a mic during this episode and I get to ask him a bunch of technical questions. As you all know by now, Oscar is a wealth of knowledge and my beloved resource when it comes to motorcycle oils and used oil analysis (UOA). We use Black Stone Lab for all our UOA's. You'll have to listen in to get all the details on this topic as Oscar spills his knowledge! Check out our #1 Ranked Harley-Davidson Routine Maintenance & Oil Change Video Like a diesel engine, a Harley engine is classified as "heavy duty" use. So, many of the additive packages they put in the oils are very similar. If you're going to do this, our suggestion is to at least use full synthetic 15w-40 heavy duty diesel oil. Again, we are not actually encouraging anyone to put heavy duty diesel oil in their Harley. Always check with your local Harley-Davidson dealership mechanic for advice. There are many bikers out there that swear by using heavy duty diesel oil in their Harley. Big Daddy Kane here at Law Abiding Biker™ Media has also done it before in the past. Just know that Harley-Davidson recommendations are different and you definitely could have warranty issues should they discover it. If you're not under warranty then heck, do what you please at your own risk. Our personal take on it? Oscar and I are going to continue using full synthetic 20W-50 Amsoil in our Harley-Davidson's as it's approved and we love it. I'll spend almost the same amount of money buying full synthetic 15W-40 heavy duty diesel oil anyways. But, if you're using standard (non-synthetic) 15W-40 heavy duty diesel oil then you can go real cheap. Email From: David Caldwell Thanks! I was scheduled for an expensive dyno tune at Hammer Performance here in Sandpoint (great bunch of guys), but I watched your post re Vance & Hines' FP3. Cancelled the dyno thing, ordered the FP3, and installed it today. Cleaned my 15 Road Glide Special right up. Amazing piece of work. Bought the bike off the showroom @ Lone Wolf, had a stage one put in first thing, and it never would run right. Had them re-tune this spring, but no improvement. Did the FP3, ran a 45 minute map run, zapped it, and fell in love with my bike all over again. The dyno tune at Hammer and the FP3 were basically even money (actually Hammer had the potential to be quite a bit more), but with the FuelPak I can keep tuning indefinitely. As you can see from your roster, I support what you're doing. Keep it up! If you are thinking of getting started with action cameras on your motorcycle then you'll definitely need to take a listen. Russell Roberts can tell you, and I agree, that the Biker Gripper GoPro Motorcycle Mounts are the best in the world. That is our #1 go to GoPro motorcycle mount. Good luck using the cheap plastic GoPro "bar mount" to attach your camera to your motorcycle. They break after several uses and you'll get unwanted vibrations in your footage. We talk about these mounts and more. We also talk about mounting your GoPro to your motorcycle helmet, which I often do during moto biker vlogs. It can give a great rider perspective. There are mics and Yakima Rive Canyon Biker Motorcycle attachments you'll need to talk into your GoPro while riding down the road. I talk about the equipment I use and list affiliate links to the exact items I use below. Many times I'm asked what GoPro settings I use to record video. Of course, that depends on the exact look I want, but I can say a good starting point for most bikers would be to record at 1080p and 60fps (frames per second). I am not a fan of recording at 4K right now, due to the massive file sizes and management of those files. And the fact that most viewers will never see it in 4k anyways. I am also asked what software I currently use to edit my videos. I use Final Cut Pro X on my Mac for most of my video editing with many purchased add-ons. Rusell and I also use Adobe Premiere, which can be used on MAC or PC. If you are not doing advanced things then for most iMovie, which comes free on Mac's, works just fine. GoPro also has free desktop editing software. There are also free programs for PC too, but I don't use PC's so you'll have to see what's available. Last, we compare other action cameras on the market for you. We compare GoPro to those cams and give you our opinions on the many choices out there. You'll also need a good quality quiet helmet if you want to moto vlog. I use a Schuberth C3 Pro helmet to cut down on any wind noise. Adding a wind-screen of sorts to the mic can also cut down on wind noise. I'm also behind a fairing most the time on my Harley Street Glide and that helps a ton. These are all things you'll need to consider and testing will be key to see what works best for your needs. I don't currently use any GoPro session models, but Russell Roberts does. He gives his insight and the pros and cons of the session vs. the full-size GoPro cams in this episode. Russell is very involved and supportive of Law Abiding Biker™ Podcast & Media. Many of you know him and see him post in the Private Patron Only Facebook Group! Russell is a professional truck driver and when he learned he had to make a drop in Seattle, WA, he gave us a shout. He had to come 2 hrs and 15 minutes east across the Cascade Mountains to visit us in the Yakima, WA area. We love to meet up with our Patron Members when we can. Get hooked up now as a Patron Member because you never know where we'll be next! I had met Russell at our Patron Member only meet up in Sturgis in 2015, so it was good to see him again. In true Law Abiding Biker style, we took Russell on a day ride to the Brick Saloon in Roslyn, WA where we ate lunch and talked. Oscar, Cuz, Lurch, and Indian John all made the day ride and got to hang with and get to know Russell. We came back and Russell got a full tour of the Law Abiding Biker™ garage and media studio. Russell, LawDog, and I then fired the studio gear up and spit two podcast episodes, this being the first. The second podcast was all about GoPro and action cams on your motorcycle, so check that one out. Russell is an awesome photographer and we share a passion for technology, so he was the perfect fit. As for LawDog, well.........he asked alot of good questions. Listen in and get to know Russell. We talk about everything biker and you'll find Russell has some great stories. I really enjoyed having Russell on the mic and in the studio. That's right, Oscar & I are on the mics discussing everything about the new Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight 107 ci motor! The articles on the internet are hit and miss at best. Oscar & I break it down from a real biker perspective and what it actually means for all of you Bikaholics out there! We have a real biker conversation. Oscar has a ton of knowledge on the specs on this new motor and you'll definitely want to listen in. Then, you can make an educated decision about whether it's worth it for you to upgrade. New 2017 Harley touring models will be equipped with the Milwaukee-Eight 107 ci (1750 cc) motor. The CVO models will now be equipped with a 114 ci (1870 cc) motor. The eight-valve motor was a complete redesign with new cases, cylinders, heads, and flywheel. This motor is a cooler and quieter motor from Harley-Davidson, which were several of their major goals in the redesign. Several days after recording this podcast I had the opportunity to spend some time with a crushed ice pearl colored 2017 Harley-Davidson Street Glide Special with the Milwaukee-Eight 107 ci motor. I filmed the bike in detail and went over the specs and information for you. I then did a MotoVlog for you as I took her for a test ride. See the below very popular Harley Milwaukee-Eight videos I put on my YouTube Channel! As usual, we wanted to meet up with any Patrons members in Colorado while we were there and we put out the info ahead of time. Patron Al Long got involved right away. He even took a day off work to meet and ride with us. He was our official guide. We met up with Al and he gave us a grand tour around the Denver, Colorado area. He took us on some nice twisty roads and through some beautiful areas. We even visited the grave of Buffalo Bill at 987 Lookout Mountain Rd, Golden, CO. Anyways, we stopped in Idaho Springs, CO and had a nice lunch & cold beer at Tommyknocker Brewery. This is a definite place to visit if you're ever in the area. Al, Indian John, and I had a nice conversation over beer and food, biker to biker. That is exactly what this podcast episode is all about. New York Times bestselling author and co-founder of Wired magazine, Kevin Kelly, stopped by the show to chat with me about his journey from travel journalist to famed futurist. Mr. Kelly’s storied and winding career has taken him around the world in search of visions of the new digital frontier. Kevin is a renowned TED speaker and author of multiple bestsellers including his latest, The Inevitable: Understanding the 12 Technological Forces That Will Shape Our Future, a title that offers an optimistic roadmap of how new technologies will shape humanity. Dubbed “the Most Interesting Man in the World” by Tim Ferris, Mr. Kelly began writing on the internet near its inception and never looked back. He has taken gigs including Editor for the Whole Earth Review, and presently Senior Maverick at Wired magazine, a magazine he co-founded in 1993, and where he served as Executive Editor until 1999. If you know anything about Rainmaker Digital and Copyblogger, you may know that we produce incredible live events. Some would say that we produce incredible live events as an excuse to throw great parties, but that’s another story. We’ve got another one coming up this October in Denver. It’s called Digital Commerce Summit and it is entirely focused on giving you the smartest ways to create and sell digital products and services. You can find out more at Rainmaker.FM/summit. That’s Rainmaker.FM/summit. We’ll be talking about Digital Commerce Summit in more detail as it gets closer, but for now I’d like to let a few attendees from our past events speak for us. Attendee 1: For me, it’s just hearing from the experts. This is my first industry event, so it’s awesome to learn new stuff and also get confirmation that we’re not doing it completely wrong where I work. Attendee 2: The best part of the conference, for me, is being able to mingle with people and realize that you have connections with everyone here. It feels like LinkedIn live. I also love the parties after each day, being able to talk to the speakers, talk to other people who are here for the first time, people who have been here before. Attendee 3: I think the best part of the conference, for me, is understanding how I can service my customers a little more easily. Seeing all the different facets and components of various enterprises then helps me pick the best tools. Jerod Morris: Hey, we agree. One of the biggest reasons we host the conference every year is so that we can learn how to service our customers — people like you — more easily. Here are just a few more words from folks who have come to our past live events. Attendee 4: It’s really fun. I think it’s a great mix of beginner information and advanced information. I’m really learning a lot and having a lot of fun. Attendee 5: The conference is great, especially because it’s a single-track conference where you don’t get distracted by “Which session should I go to?” And, “Am I missing something?” Attendee 6: The training and everything — the speakers have been awesome — but I think the coolest aspect for me has been connecting with those people who are putting it on and the other attendees. Jerod Morris: That’s it for now. There’s a lot more to come on Digital Commerce Summit. I really hope to see you there in October. Again, to get all the details and the very best deal on tickets, head over to Rainmaker.FM/summit. That’s Rainmaker.FM/summit. Kelton Reid: These are The Writer Files, a tour of the habits, habitats, and brains of working writers from online content creators to fictionists, journalists, entrepreneurs, then beyond. I’m your host, Kelton Reid, writer, podcaster, and mediaphile. Each week we’ll discover how great writers keep the ink flowing, the cursor moving, and avoid writer’s block. In part two of the file, Kevin and I discuss why the author can’t write on the road, the importance of delegation as a writer, the Cool Tools Kevin Kelly uses to get words onto the page, a futurist’s expansive definition of creativity, how lateral thinking can improve your writing, and the day Steven Spielberg asked Mr. Kelly to predict the future. Why the Author Can’t Write on the Road Kelton Reid: Do you have an office? Once you’ve traveled the world and gotten all the stuff you need — researched all the stuff — do you go back to the office then, or do you feel like you can write on the road? Kevin Kelly: I cannot write on the road at all. I can’t even write on planes. I can’t even write in hotel rooms. I do all my writing here. I have this magnificent studio. I call it a studio, it’s two stories. It’s in California. It’s all white. It’s got a huge ceiling. There are two stories of books. I have all my toys — my Lego wall here. I have a Styro Bot. I built it for me and my way of working. Camille’s just right over there. I have another assistant too, who does the website stuff. I have my big, huge whiteboard. I’ve got everything. I have a standing — and a ball, so I can move from standing to sitting within seconds. I need to be here to get my writing done, and I have the privilege of being able to control my time that way. I don’t know if I need to, but that’s how I choose to. That works for me. You’re right about the travel. When I’m traveling there’s two kinds — there’s the traveling for doing talks … My livelihood is basically giving talks in China. Most of my fans are in China. I have 20 times the number of fans in China than I do in the U.S., so I go to China to do talks. Because I have this obsession with Asia, I usually will piggyback other trips either in China or elsewhere around Asia when I go because I’m photographing the disappearing Asia. When I’m in photograph mode I can do nothing else. It’s really weird, but I become totally a camera. I’m just a camera. I’m a walking camera. I started off in the 1970s doing that. That’s what my first thing was. Instead of going to college, I went to Asia as a photographer and I was photographing the stuff. I was a camera. I worked from the beginning of daylight to the end of daylight as a camera. Still when I go to Asia — the same thing, I am just there. Then, when I’m in the hotel, I’m downloading, backing up all my stuff. Doing the minimum amount of e-mail that I need to do. Then I’m in bed. Then the next day, I’m just a camera. I find it really hard to — I’m happy if I can do my e-mail. I can’t write then. When I come back, then I can shift. I’ll leave the camera off to the side and then I can try and write. Kelton Reid: That sounds cool. It sounds like you’ve got these processes in place that help you to process, crunch all the information you see and then you get back to the designated writing space to get into the flow. The Importance of Delegation as a Writer Kevin Kelly: The other thing that I learned to do at Wired, working through the magazine, was delegate and hire. For 10 years I did Cool Tools myself. Five days a week, I was editing. I wasn’t writing all those reviews, but I was soliciting, getting them in, editing everybody, sending it back, going rounds of approval, posting it and finding the pictures, and doing the access information. At some point — it made money from the very beginning. “Okay, so I’m going to hire editors to do this.” I was overseeing a publisher, but they were doing the work. That’s the other thing that I have learned to do, is to hire out. That’s the one thing I wish I’d learned earlier in life, to hire people better than yourself as a way of extending your reach. Cool Tools — Marcus is running that, basically. Silver Cord — my partner in that is running that. I don’t have a partner yet in True Films, but Claudia — who is here — is helping me now. That’s the idea. The way that I found to leverage my ideas and perspective is to hire whenever I can. The Cool Tools Kevin Kelly Uses to Get Words on the Page Kelton Reid: That’s cool. For scaling and probably peace of mind too. To harness your skills and your creativity. Speaking of Cool Tools, let’s talk a little bit about the Cool Tools that you use to actually get words onto the page, if you don’t mind. I’d love to know. I know you’ve got some organizational hacks in place, it sounds like, but are you a Mac guy or are you a PC guy? When you’re actually sitting down to get words onto the page, what are you using there? Kevin Kelly: There’s a joke. I’ll actually just show you a picture of my — I have a beige, boring minivan, but the back window is covered with little white apples, like a million of them. I have been an Apple user from the Apple 2e. We did a famous Wired cover about praying for Apple because there was a brief spell before Jobs came back that I thought I was going to have to actually make the big switch to Windows. I was within two months of doing that, but he came back in time and saved the day. Yeah, I’m a total Mac — we’re a Mac household. I have an iPhone. I work on a Mac — they call it a Mac Tower. It’s a behemoth machine that sits below me. I have two cinema screens: one at sitting height and one at standing height. I can just toggle between them. I have a little, tiny, 11-inch Mac Air that I take with me when I travel. It’s big enough just to do e-mail and primitive web. I have my PowerPoint speeches mounted, and that’s it. I’m not a very mobile person, the first smart phone I had was Apple 6. I’m old-school in that sense. E-mail’s the best way to reach me. I work on a desktop. I’m not mobile. When I take pictures I have to process them. I use Lightroom, which I think is fantastic. I don’t even need Photoshop. I just use Lightroom for managing my gazillion … By the way, I have them all backed up to not only Google, but I’m a insane, radical, extreme backer-upper. My photos are backed up on three clouds and three different hard disks beyond the cards that I have. I also have them backed up in three different places while I travel. Needless to say, I have never lost an image. Kelton Reid: Is that known as RAID? Kevin Kelly: Yeah, exactly. I have my own version of RAID. Right, exactly. The tools I use for writing — eventually I get into Microsoft Word. I don’t always start there. Believe it or not, I sometimes start writing in my e-mail because it’s so simple and I’m not going to lose it. I can keep it up. I used to mail it to myself as a backup. That was long before I had Time Machine. Sometimes the first notes will be in all kinds of things. Sometimes it’ll be in Google Docs. Sometimes it’ll be in my e-mail. Sometimes it’ll be in Notes. Eventually it gets to Microsoft. When I’m writing a bigger piece I actually will move things, at some point, into Scrivener. Scrivener is this really cool software that’s used by people doing long-form writing, whether it be fiction or nonfiction, or sometimes screenplays. It’s a card-based organizing metaphor, so things have cards and you can move these cards around. The cards can have an indefinite amount of text in them, and you can put them in hierarchies or you can keep them flat, but the idea is that you can move all this stuff around. It takes the place of the old way where we actually did cut and paste. Had things in piles and moved piles around on the floor, or index cards on your desktop. It does that. And it’s really good for organizing lots of things in lots of parts. I’ve used that for the last two books, and I would definitely use it again for any other book I did. I think that’s on both Mac and Windows. I’m using Scrivener, but at some point it’ll make its way into a Word doc in the final form. That’s just because, in my experience working with magazines and book publishers, this is the universal format. It just has to reach there at some point. Kelton Reid: The track changes and traditional publishing. Kevin Kelly: Yeah, exactly. Kelton Reid: I skipped over a big one, but here is one for you. You probably are rubbing elbows with writers — and you have been for much of your career — do you believe in writer’s block? Kevin Kelly: I don’t. If you mean do I experience writer blocks, that’s all I can say. I’ve never really talked to the other writers about writer’s block, so I can’t say whether they have it or not. I have never had them volunteer conversation about it. I was just hanging out last week with all these science fiction authors — very published successes — and this never came up. I have not experienced it myself. In talking to them about their work habits and stuff, some of them have pretty regular, “write every day” kind of things where they’ll write about something every day. Maybe it’s not about what their book is, but they’ll do something. It has not been an issue in my experience. Kelton Reid: Cool. That’s good. Knock on wood. Kevin Kelly: Yeah. A Futurist’s Expansive Definition of Creativity Kelton Reid: All right. Let’s get into creativity a little bit. I know we’ve got a few more minutes here. I think creativity is probably inherent to a lot of what you do, but it might not be labeled as creativity when you’re getting into technology and looking to the future. Do you think that you could define creativity for us? Kevin Kelly: My image of creativity is a diagram in a book called The Act of Creation by Koestler. It’s an old book. It was his attempt to try and figure out what creativity is. His diagram was very simple: take two index cards that are inserted into each other so they form — from the end — a profile of a cross. So there are two planes that are intersecting, you have a flat plane and a vertical plane. You have two planes that are intersecting. His idea was that all creativity is basically taking two unrelated planes and making them intersect. That’s the visual image that I have of creativity, which is you are making a connection, an intersection between things that have not intersected before. Jokes are kind of like that. A joke is when you take two things that don’t seem to be related and you bring them together in some way that’s plausible and it’s funny. New ideas, new innovations are the same kind of thing where you recombine existing mechanisms in a way that haven’t been combined before. Brian Arthur’s and Paul Romer — two separate guys with two separate theories, but they’re both the same, which is that the fountain of all innovation is just a recombination. In fact, the origin of all wealth is actually recombination. You’re just recombining things. This idea of intersecting things that had not intersected before is my definition of creativity. There are, of course, rules. You can’t just take any random thing, the new intersection has to work in some way. It has to be plausible, interesting, whatever — but fundamentally, that’s the act. When I see something creative, it’s usually because someone has — we talked about the other metaphor of a leap somewhere. They have stepped off something and they’re stepping somewhere else, but there are actually two legs. They actually have a leg in the departure point and a leg in the arrival point. Those two things have not been bridged before. That’s my image of an intersection of two unrelated ideas. Kelton Reid: I like it. I like it a lot. I think that we’re getting close here. I have a couple of other questions for you, but — Kevin Kelly: Let me just say one thing about the creativity. Kelton Reid: Oh, I’m sorry. How Lateral Thinking Can Improve Your Writing Kevin Kelly: No, because I’ve gotten to work with many of what I would consider some of the most creative people working today, alive today. People who are technically geniuses like Danny Hillis, artistically genius like Brian Eno, and cultural genius like Stewart Brand. It’s really been interesting to watch them operate. I think they have trained their minds to do this. They’re doing the thing I’m saying with these unrelated planes intersecting, but they do them in different ways. Brian Eno, he’s the most lateral thinker I know. Lateral meaning that he’s associating ideas coming from off to the side. We have a tendency to proceed in a linear way, or a way in which there’s the obvious things in front of you that you may want to combine. He has an ability to reach off to the side into something that is unexpected, trying to make that association that will work. He’s particularly good at reaching behind his back or off to the side — that’s what I meant by laterally — to bring something in. That ability to, in some senses, dismiss or ignore the obvious ones and to reach for the unobvious but yet still works, is something that I think actually they train. Brian Eno has a famous set of cards called Oblique Strategies that he and a partner use to make music. These were prompts that they would pick up at random to force themselves to do this lateral thinking. They were prompts like, “Take the most obvious thing and ignore it,” or “What about the middle? Emphasize the middle.” They were almost random things. Often, that action would not be the thing that worked, but that would lead them to this other unobvious next step that would work. That’s one way. Those cards are actually very valuable and useful for anything. I have a deck right here. I have my own internal ones of when you’re in a situation — say when you’re stuck, you use these things as prompts, exercises to force yourself to think about these other approaches. It’s very handy. I think, internally, that’s what Brian and other are doing, is actually have a set of little things that they’re running through, sometimes unconsciously, as they try and prompt themselves to take this lateral approach. Then there are others like Marvin Minsky and Danny Hillis who are very technical. I think they do something very similar, particularly Marvin, which is pretend that they’re not human. They try to approach this as if they were seeing it for the first time, as if they were coming from another planet, as if they were pretending they were, often, a robot. “How would a robot do this?” To try and do the same thing of looking at it with fresh eyes, looking at it in a way that no ordinary human would look at it, not as a way an ordinary human would look at it. Then Stuart Brand, who also has this ability, I think his little heuristic that he also trained himself to do was to force himself — each time he approached something he would force himself to try and find a different perspective on it, including using the words that he used to describe something. He would never, ever repeat himself. If he was talking about something he knew, he would require that he use different words when talking about it this time to this person, even though he’d been talking about it for a thousand times before. That constraint would require him — because of the new words — to see it differently. Then he would have an insight just because he forced himself to use different words. Those are some of the ways that I’ve seen some of the most creative people I know use this on a daily basis. They have trained themselves to be better at this on an ongoing basis — not just when they’re sitting down, but as a habit. Kelton Reid: For sure. Yeah, I know screenwriter John August has a similar set of prompts like the Oblique Strategies that he uses for screenwriters which has proven to be very helpful. I think writers can use that in whatever way they think to kick-start their writing for sure. Side note, I love Brian Eno’s Music for Airports. I actually listen to it while I’m writing. I find that it helps because it’s kind of meandering and ambient, of course. I’ve got to slip this one in here. I know that in The Inevitable and Understanding the Technological Forces That Will Shape Our World, you’ve talked about VR quite a bit. I heard you say you were reading Ready Player One, which is Ernie Cline’s journey into VR. What is it? The OASIS? Kevin Kelly: Correct. Kelton Reid: Interesting intersection there. I think you’ve worked with Steven Spielberg in the past, and he is adapting that book into a movie. Have you heard anything about that? Kevin Kelly: I have not heard — either from Ernie or elsewhere — about what state the Spielberg Ready Player One is in. I’ve heard different rumors about whether it’s actually going to be in VR or not. I think there is likely to be some VR component, probably a VR game version. But no, I don’t know anything more about it other than what has been published. I think that it’s an ideal Spielberg movie for many reasons, not the least of all the references to the seventies and eighties that I’m sure he’d be very good at. Kelton Reid: Right. I thought it was interesting that it takes place in 2044 and he actually tapped you to help him predict 2054 in Minority Report. Why Steven Spielberg Asked Mr. Kelly to Predict the Future Kevin Kelly: Right, yeah. Kelton Reid: I thought maybe he had tapped you again. Kevin Kelly: No. It was just not me, it was a group of us, and as far as I know he hasn’t reached out in that sense to do that — which was a very amazing experience. There was a set of people, including the people I just mentioned, except I don’t think Brian was there. Doug Copeland and some other — Jaron Lanier — were present, and our job was to make this world comprehensive. It was really interesting because we did a lot of arm waving about these things. Spielberg is sitting in the room and he’s there with his little pencil and pad. He says, “Okay, what are people sleeping on? What do the beds look like? How about for breakfast, what are people having for breakfast?” That requirement to be that specific was very galvanizing because you couldn’t just talk about general things. He wanted to know what the beds looked like. So you began to think, “What do they look like? Are they any different? The same? Are they waterbeds?” That was so profound for me, because that really changed how I try to think about the future now. Kelton Reid: How cool. I really appreciate you taking time out to chat with us about your process. The Inevitable: Understanding the 12 Technological Forces That Will Shape Our World, a very optimistic roadmap of the future. Really cool stuff. It’s out now and we can find it out there. You link to it at kk.org and it’s on Amazon. I’ll link to your Google Plus Page as well and your Twitter handle. Is there any other sign-offs for writers you want to drop on us before you go to the next interview? Kevin Kelly: No, other than I do suggest that you look at the Cool Tools book that I did, which was self published. It’s this huge, oversized, thick, heavy, five pound, massive catalog of possibilities. There are some good writer tools besides Scrivener. There are some other resources for people making things and being creative — tools not just like the wrenches and pipes, but things like Elance, or what they would call Upwork these days. How to hire someone for help. Where to get a logo or book cover done. Check out that, that’s available on Amazon as well. Kelton Reid: Mr. Kelly, thank you so much. We really appreciate it. Best of luck with all of your press rounds, and hopefully you’ll come back and talk to us again another time. Kevin Kelly: Sure thing. Thanks for the attention. Appreciate it. Kelton Reid: Thank you. Official Website: http://www.lawabidingbiker.com Podcast-Many of you requested we do a follow-up podcast episode on the violent criminal biker gang shooting that occurred in Waco, Texas at the Twin Peaks Restaraunt on Sunday, May 17, 2015 that left nine bikers dead and many others hospitalized. We listened and go in depth in this two-part podcast series. Don't forget to listen to podcast episode #78 & read the article we released shortly after the incident. It has been about one year now since these violent acts took place between the Bandidos Motorcycle Club and the Cossacks Motorcycle Club. These motorcycle clubs are designated as outlaw motorcycle gangs (OMG's). The Bandidos claim 1%er, but the Cossacks do not. The clubs were both present at the Twin Peaks Restaraunt to attend a Confederation of Clubs (COC) meeting. The Bandidos control the Texas COC and want the Cossacks to pay them dues. The Cossacks refused to pay the COC dues and also decided to start wearing a "Texas" bottom rocker on the back of their vests, against the advice of the Bandidos. The Bandidos MC believes only they have the right to wear that Texas rocker. There had been many documented violent feuds between the clubs leading up to this shootout. The Cossacks claim they were at the COC meeting to ask for a truce. 154 out of the 174 bikers arrested that day have been indicted for engaging in organized criminal activity. Most are out on bail and it will be some time before many ever see a court room. It is a large-scale investigation that is ongoing. Over 1000 weapons were recovered throughout the crime scene. Guns, knives, brass knuckles, hammers, tomahawks, machetes, bullet proof vests, and even an AK-47 assault rifle were recovered. These criminals hid guns in bags of potato chips, between bags of flower, and tried to stuff them down toilets. In the words of Sgt. Swanton of the Waco, Texas Police Department, "They were not here to eat barbecue and drink beer". I agree with his thoughts that these criminal biker gangs were there for trouble. It is clearly demonstrated by the amount of weaponry recovered and the way they were hidden. This kind of evidence shows these clubs true intentions. Shortly after the Waco incident, Bandidos National President Jeff Pike and several other top Bandidos leaders were arrested and federally indicted. Not for the Twin Peaks incident, but for a federal investigation that was already ongoing. The indictments were for assault, murder, and extortion. Pike stepped down as the President and is out on bond awaiting trial. The police did everything they could to warn Twin Peaks management of the dangers of holding more biker events, due to the mounting violence between clubs. But, they disregarded warnings and went on as usual. One former Twin Peaks waitress has spoken out and witnessed Police telling management of the dangers. Police had no authority to shut the Twin Peaks down and had to standby with forces outside the event. Their hands were tied and their fears came true. These criminal bikers even opened fire at the police during the shootout and it should be no surprise that several criminal bikers were likely shot & killed by police. However, the ballistic reports have not yet been released. In fact, Bandido MC member Jake Carrizal has publicly stated on a CNN special that it appears police shot a man that was clearly going to shoot him. Carrizal is likely alive, because of police protection and their swift action. A simple thank you to the police would be nice for saving his life. We will have to wait for ballistic reports to confirm this. Carrizal was directly involved in the start of this brawl and can be seen on video surveillance. Former Bandidos National President Jeff Pike is ignorant enough to say that all would have been fine had one uniformed police officer been inside the restaurant walking around. These criminal bikers knew SWAT and police were all around the restaurant and still opened fire on each other. Clearly a uniformed officer would have stopped nothing and put that officer in great danger. The juvenile thinking of these criminal bikers speaks volumes. Of course, there are those bikers arrested complaining. Many complain and shift blame as usual. Honestly, I don't know the merits of each case nor the details of each, nor does anyone else except those involved with the actual investigation. I will say that if you are going be a criminal biker, attend events with rival 1%er clubs clearly present, involve yourself with the COC, or just hang with known criminal bikers then you are putting yourself at risk of being in the middle of fights & the possibility of being criminally investigated. Sometimes common sense needs to be used. This is just the start and you'll have to listen in to this two part podcast series to get all the facts and details. In this podcast episode, we reference a CNN special titled "Biker Brawl: Inside The Texas Shootout".
