Matt and Frank are back in there continuous quest to cover all of the James Bond movies. This week we get too pretty middling entries:- You Only Live Twice (1967)- Octopussy (1983)In You Only Live Twice, Bond (Sean Connery) is dispatched to Japan after American and Soviet-crewed spacecraft vanish mysteriously in orbit, each nation blaming the other amidst the Cold War. Bond travels secretly to a remote Japanese island to find the perpetrators, and comes face-to-face with Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the head of SPECTRE. The film reveals the appearance of Blofeld, who was previously unseen. SPECTRE is working for the government of an unnamed Asian power, implied to be the People's Republic of China, to provoke war between the superpowers.[4][5]In Octopussy, Bond (Roger Moore) is assigned the task of hunting a megalomaniacal Soviet general (Steven Berkoff) who is stealing jewellery and art objects from the Kremlin art repository. This leads Bond to the exiled Afghan prince Kamal Khan (Louis Jourdan), and his associate Octopussy (Maud Adams), and the discovery of a plot to force disarmament in Western Europe with the use of a nuclear weapon.

Picasso Trigger, the third installment of the L.E.T.H.A.L Cinematic Universe. This one crams even more pages of Playboy into the cast list. SEVEN former playmates. Sidaris has a formula. But as far as we can understand the plot: A homeless person's Ernst Stavro Blofeld vows vengeance on The Agency for having killed his brother in Hard Ticket to Hawaii. So, maybe it's more like Die Hard 3? After several of their colleagues are rubbed out, L.E.T.H.A.L (aka Girls with Guns), with the aid of gadgets from the Professor, a Bosley from Charlie's Angels knock-off named Long Dong and leading man Travis Abilene take down the crime lord behind it all, Miguel Ortiz. Also, the first operative to die actually faked his own death and was a bad guy. Picasso Trigger final grade: Steve Sidaris' movie-writing skills are trending in the right direction. This one is probably a *better* movie than either Hard TIcket or Malibu Express. The nod to James Bond with all the gadgets was fun. 2.79/5.0 Brandon The plot of this movie is ¯_(ツ)_/¯, again, nearly impossible to track. The boring bits of this one are exacerbated by the lack of...visual distractions...to draw your attention away from any monotony. Gotta give this one a similar score as the others, but the magic may be wearing off. 3.69/5 Cocktail of the Week: Ranch Water 1 1/2 oz Tequila Blanco 1 oz fresh-squeezed lime juice Sparkling water Build the drink the the glass. Pour ingredients over ice and stir to combine. Garnish with a lime wedge. Cocktail Grade: A fine tequila-based spin on the Gin Rickey, low-sugar, low calorie, all health. 4.5/5 ------------------ Contact us with feedback or cocktail/movie recommendations to: boozeandbmovies@gmail.com X: @boozeandbmovies Instagram: @boozeandbmovies Threads: @boozeandbmovies www.facebook.com/boozeandbmovies --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/boozeandbmovies/support

fWotD Episode 2616: On Her Majesty's Secret Service (novel) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 3 July 2024 is On Her Majesty's Secret Service (novel). On Her Majesty's Secret Service is the tenth novel and eleventh book in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. It was first published in the United Kingdom by Jonathan Cape on 1 April 1963. Fleming changed the formula and structure from the previous novel, The Spy Who Loved Me, and made a determined effort to produce a work that adhered to his tried and tested format. The initial and secondary print runs sold out quickly, with over 60,000 copies sold in the first month, double that of the previous book's first month of sales. Fleming wrote the novel at Goldeneye, his holiday home in Jamaica, while Dr. No, the first entry in the James Bond film series by Eon Productions, was being filmed nearby. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is the second book in what is known as the "Blofeld trilogy", which begins with Thunderball and concludes with You Only Live Twice. This episode centres on Bond's ongoing search to find Ernst Stavro Blofeld after the Thunderball incident. Bond finds Blofeld in Switzerland and attacks the centre where he is based, although Blofeld escapes in the confusion. Bond meets and falls in love with Contessa Teresa "Tracy" di Vicenzo during the story. The pair marry at the end of the novel, but hours after the ceremony, Blofeld and his partner, Irma Bunt, attack the couple and Tracy is killed. Fleming developed Bond's character within the book, showing an emotional side that was not present in the previous stories. As he had done in previous novels, Fleming used his past experiences and details of people he met during his work to provide details in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The novel is one of three Bond stories to deal with the disruption of markets and the economy, in this case Blofeld's planned disruption to the food supply by bioterrorism. The theme of food and drink is referred to throughout the novel, with Bond's meals and drinks being described in detail. On Her Majesty's Secret Service received broadly positive reviews in the British and American press with some reviewers pleased at the return to the more traditional form of Bond storyline. The novel was adapted as a three-part story in Playboy in 1963, serialised in eleven parts in the Daily Express and then developed as a daily cartoon strip in the Daily Express in 1964–1965. In 1969 the novel was adapted as the sixth film in the Eon Productions James Bond film series and was the only film to star George Lazenby as Bond. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:35 UTC on Wednesday, 3 July 2024.For the full current version of the article, see On Her Majesty's Secret Service (novel) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Amy.

Zero and The Wiz Say MISSION FAILURE for Spectre When thinking about the Craig era reboot of James Bond, a lot of the decisions that were made in Spectre make sense on paper. Things like Bond finding an eventual love interest after Vesper, the introduction of the criminal organization SPECTRE and, of course, the reveal of Ernst Stavro Blofeld sounds like great things to add into the reboot canon. But the decisions made in this movie are not only a total misfire, they hurt the overall quality of the Craig Era and, in some ways, lessens the quality of his other films. Bond seems to stray further away from how he was in Casino Royale, the eventual romance falls flat and the action, while visually appealing and has great stunts, lack stakes and just feel mechanical. But the one mistake that Spectre makes that destroys the movie is that of Blofeld. Waltz does as good of a job as he could, but the writing turns him into the standard super villain he was in the goofy Connery version. That makes it a stark contrast to everything that represents Bond in the Craig era. And then...the twist. Not only is the revelation that Blofeld was behind the last three movies feel stapled on to make Blofeld seem more important, but finding out that Blofeld is his brother is also laughably bad and pointless. I never thought I'd see the day that Bond would be taking elements from Austin Powers...and yet here we are. Despite it's gorgeous visuals and excellent stunt work, Spectre does so much damage to the Craig Bond era that it forms a cloud on the entire proceeding. A disaster on many fronts.

Morgan (the only US airman to receive the Medal of Honor and also be a POW), flying ace Vermont Garrison, and Colonel Hubert Zemke. After the war, Donald Pleasence resumed his acting career and was to appear in 140 films over the next 50 years.Arguably, one of the greatest villains that James Bond (007) was to go up against, Pleasence played Ernst Stavro Blofeld in "You Only Live Twice".Later on he also appeared as Dr. Samuel Loomis in the cult "Halloween" film franchise. In 1963, he reprised his experience as a wartime POW when he starred in "The Great Escape".Speaking of wartime movies, he also appeared in "The Eagle Has Landed".Donald Pleasence died in France in 1995.Support the Show.

Hello, dear listeners! We all remember sitting in theatres in October and November of 2015 for Spectre, basking in the glory of the moment when it was revealed that Ernst Stavro Blofeld and Bond are some related, albeit by proxy. A truly ‘'memorable'' moment in the film series. Well, what if we told you that John Gardner, author of plenty of continuation novels (among them the already reviewed Licence Renewed) had a few family plots of his own up his sleeve at a time when SP was but a tinkle in the mind's eye of the producers? If you thought the half-brother reveal in SP was something special, just wait until you get a load of Gardner's 2nd continuation novel: For Special Services. In fact, the twists and turns and ice cream selection are so bountiful that co-hosts Mathieu and Edgar cannot handle the load alone. To the rescue is Emery Cormier, founder and host of the Intrepid 007 Podcast, based in Station QC, Québec City. He joins the boys this week to taste every flavour of sugary goodness to be discovered in the novel: What's the Fleming connection with the book's title? Are two boobs always better than one (Are they? ARE THEY?)? Would Bond really have won his race against Walter Luxor with a Saab? Are uncomfortable are ants in your pants? How sexually adventurous is the Leiter family? So sit back, relax and enjoy this week's episode with special guest Emery Cormier and adore the book as much as we did. Honest. We really, really like it. Yes. We feel perfectly fine. Absolutely normal. Why do you ask? Go on…have a taste of this ice cream! Hello, dear listeners! October 31st looms, and with it a chill fills in the air and brushes up your spine that can only mean one thing: the horrors of Halloween! Evil takes many shapes, from witches, to goblins, vampires, werewolves and more. But throughout pop culture history, few characters have represented evil as…purely and simply as the terrifying Shape, the masked killer Michael Myers himself. The Halloween series a favourite for one of the show's hosts, and since it's October, Mathieu and Edgar decided to record another Halloween special, much like they did last year, only this time they concentrate on John Carpenter's original classic with some brief pit stops along the way for the sequels, spinoff, and reboot. But why talk for over and hour about the Halloween films? Yes, Jamie Lee Curtis would have been an interesting Bond leading lady, but the real reason is that it serves as a spooky entry in the show's ongoing Detour series, for none other than Ernst Stavro Blofeld himself strives to keep the townsfolk of Haddonfield, Illinois safe. Yes, call this a back door Donald Pleasence Detour. Carpenter's classic slasher flick inspires the boys to bask in a number of terrifying topics. How many universe/timelines are there in the franchise? Is Michael Myers' figure carved into the Jack-O-Lanter that appears in the title sequence or has Edgar gone completely insane? How creepy is the score? Does the film serve the role of being a fable and or morality tale? How many terrible remakes to classic horror films has Mathieu seen without having ever actually watched the originals? Would Michael Myers have stood a chance if Christopher Lee had played Dr. Loomis? It's good thing this is an audio only episode, because you wouldn't want to experience what Matt and Edgar had to go through in order to prep for this episode by into Michael's. The blackest eyes…the devil's eyes!

Hello and welcome back once again, we hope that everyone is having a fabulous time. This week we celebrate many achievements that are pure catnip for Nerds, to start with the eventual launch of the Falcon heavy rocket, also the first image of a black hole, my goodness, so much interstellar goodness. The first topic up this week is about electrical stimulation of the brain and how it can help improve memory. Now that doesn’t mean that any students should go out and start electrocuting themselves…although we all know that one person we want to zap. Research is still being developed on application of electrolysis in the treatment of Alzheimers and other issues, and NO, do not got out and electrocute the elderly, that is not cool. Next up we look at a lawyer and a lobbyist who has been banned from Eve online, apparently he claims to be innocent. It is all a misunderstanding or something is his defence, please I used that when I was 8 as an excuse, surely he can do better. Next he will be saying it was his dog did it. Then DJ has news about the cast being announced for the live action series of Cowboy Beebop. We are all nervous but hopefully this one will work, of course we aren’t holding our breathe. After all, they have to get one right eventually don’t they? What do you think is the worst live action adaption from anime? Drop us a line and let us know, also which is you favourite anime you would recommend? Then we have the games of the week, shout outs, remembrances, events of interest, and birthdays. Hot diggedy do, now that is looking like a great show. As always, take care and look out for each other and stay hydrated.EPISODE NOTES:Electrical Stimulation - https://www.livescience.com/65177-electrical-stimulation-brain-memory.htmlLobbyist banned on EVE - https://www.pcgamer.com/a-real-life-lobbyist-was-just-permanently-banned-in-eve-online-for-corruption/Cowboy Bebop cast announced - https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/cowboy-bebop-netflix-live-action-series-cast-1203180399/Games currently playingBuck– Deceit - https://store.steampowered.com/app/466240/Deceit/DJ– Apex Legends - https://www.ea.com/games/apex-legendsProfessor– Krunker - https://krunker.io/Other topics discussedElectroconvulsive therapy (ECT)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroconvulsive_therapyECT wipes 30 years of person’s memory- https://www.mdedge.com/psychiatry/article/62301/ect-wipes-out-30-years-memoriesSoviet Union aka CCCP- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_UnionSpike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop character)- https://cowboybebop.fandom.com/wiki/Spike_SpiegelDeath Note (2017 Netlfix film)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Note_(2017_film)Ghost in the Shell (2017 film)- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_in_the_Shell_(2017_film)Katie Bouman: The woman behind the first black hole image- https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-47891902Shoutouts5th – 7th Apr 2019 – Melbourne Supanova 2019, Shaun from Comics2movies was there. - https://www.facebook.com/Comics2movies/7 Apr 1832 – Local farmer Joseph Thompson, a local farmer who was married in the year 1829, to his present wife was sold to Henry Mears, a pensioner, for the sum of 20 shillings and his Newfoundland dog - https://www.onthisday.com/articles/the-man-who-sold-his-wife10 Apr 2019 – Falcon Heavy Rocket launch - https://www.nbcnews.com/mach/science/spacex-s-falcon-heavy-rocket-set-first-commercial-launch-here-ncna992446Remembrances9 Apr 1926 – William Henry Johnson also known as Zip the Pinhead, was an American freak show performer famous for his tapered head. What madness is this? We decided that instead of doing a straight chornological run of the Bond, we would go with a "ping pong" method. How does that work? Basically, we are bouncing between the old and the new ones. We began with Dr. No, follow that with Spectre, next is From Russia With Love, follow that with Skyfall, and so on until we meet in the middle. So, this week we come at you with the most recent installment "Spectre." This is in many ways a landmark Bond film. It marks the first time since Connery that the most iconic Bond villian, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, could be used. Yes, a Blofeld like figure did appear in For Your Eyes Only, but that wasn't offically Ernst. This is a big deal. Which, of course means that we spend zero time talking about that, and a lot of time talking about how "Blofeld" sounds like the name given to a fat character. It's what you've come to expect.   So, we talk classic Bond, fat names, and Toblerones. It's a damned good time.   We sahll return in two weeks time with... From Russia With Love.

E: Hi, dear audience. Nice to see you again. Welcome back to the Screen Age. I'm Elisabeth.P:I'm Pearl. Py: Wish you have a nice week day, I'm Pyro.插曲:SkyfallE: So, it's another work in the 007 series.P: Exactly, it's the 24th work since it first released in 1962.E: In this one, the director Sam Mendes chose more attracting countries to make his movie. Such as Mexico, Austria, Morocco, UK and Italy.P: Sounds great. So what does this work talk about?E:Bond is back. He is in Mexico pursuing a hit man. He kills the man but not after making a scene. When he returns to England his boss M is not happy because C is trying to shut down the 00 network P: Wait a moment please. But who is C?E: He is a government man.P: Ok, well, what happened next?M: C is trying to shut down the 00 network and replace it with a new surveillance system which will essentially put an end to privacy. M tells Bond to stand down and he has Q inject him with a tracking device. Y: Q? You said Mr Q who is acted by Ben Whishaw?M: Yes. Do you know more about this character?Y: Branch Q, The Armorer Division of HMSS, has long been a position of pride for its head, which goes by the codename of Q. It is within this division that the cutting edge of British defense technology is developed and refined for the purposes of espionage.P: How intelligent he is! So, what happened to Bond next?E: Bond reveals to Moneypenny why he was In Mexico. He asks her to help him by getting some info on certain people. He asks Q to make sure no one knows he left the UK and went to Italy to talk to the hit man's wife. After talking to her he goes to meeting of an organization and when he's discovered they try to kill him but he escapes. M: And then Moneypenny tells him who the person he is looking for is and it turns out to be someone he knows. He goes to him and asks him to tell him about the organization. P: Sounds exciting. So does Bond made it?Y: He initially refuses till Bond realized he is in fear for his daughter so Bond promises to protect her. P: So it's must be another love story.E: I'm sorry to tell you it's may disappoint you. He tries to do but she doesn't want him around. But when someone tries to grab her he saves her. Finally she agrees to help him.插曲:200 BopPy: Unoriginal I know, but whether you like Daniel Craig as Bond or not, you can't deny he has been an integral part of the series' highest points. B: Exactly. Following the magnificent Skyfall, Spectre had some huge shoes to fill, and for the most part, it delivers exactly what you'd want. An attention-grabbing, tense opening fight scene, a lovely title sequence (whether the song is good is debatable), and an elaborate sinister plot surrounding James Bond that puts him up against his inner demons more than ever. Does it surpass Casino Royale or Skyfall? J: I don't think so, but as far as reintroducing the villainous organization spectre into Bond canon after more than 40 years, the film hits the nail on the head, pulls it back out, then slams it in even harder.Py: But spectre is revealed to have been affiliated with some of Bond's biggest threats - Mr. White, Le Chiffre, Raoul Silva - all under the control of one puppeteer, the head of spectre and one of the most iconic villains of all time, Ernst Stavro Blofeld. P: It isn't much of a spoiler, as speculation was rampant ever since the first trailer (and hell, when the name of the movie was released). What's important is its execution, and Spectre leaves breadcrumbs for you to follow all the way through the belly of the beast. F: For not only is Bond under SPECTRE's crosshairs, but MI6 itself is experiencing a merger led by Max Denbeigh who wants to eliminate the 00 division and focus solely on global intelligence. It's apparent early on that Blofeld has eyes everywhere.Py: while he works primarily in the shadows, he poses a looming threat to Bond because of his sheer cunning and a past secret that unravels itself when the two finally meet.插曲:Time will tellPy: Many parts of the film feel like a throwback to classic Bond. The icy environments, the car chase and gadgetry, the use of a massive threatening henchman, a train fight that is heavily reminiscent of From Russia With Love, and of course the modern birthing of Bond's greatest adversary. P: In my opinion, the acting all around is fantastic, with Craig continuing to impress as the suave womanizing secret agent. Thomas Newman turns in another wonderful musical score. But perhaps the most impressive feature is Sam Mendes' directing. The shots in this movie are absolutely gorgeous - the action scenes are incredible to watch and easy to follow, the landscapes are fresh and vibrant, and even the simplest of scenes - Bond and Blofeld walking up to each other for the first time - are quietly introspective yet palpably tense. E: Tension lingers throughout every moment of Spectre even when not much is happening, and the suspense is high enough to hold your interest for the full 2-and-a-half hours.P: Spectre is not perfect. Much of what happens narratively is predictable, and a few lines of dialogue don't go over too well, but that's just being nitpicky. E: What you want in a James Bond movie is over-the-top action surrounding the world's greatest spy who's up against unbeatable odds thanks to a brilliant charismatic villain, and this is precisely what Spectre delivers in spades. Py: Daniel Craig may or may not return as Bond, and if he doesn't, this movie would serve as a perfect send-off. P: But as the series constantly reminds us, "James Bond will return...," and Spectre is just another chapter in the immense story of everybody's favorite super spy.E: So, my dear audiences. It's time to say goodbye.P: Wish you enjoy our introduction and opinions on 007 Spectre.Py: 最后感谢制作王泽华。E:See you next time. Bye.P, Py: Bye.

November 2015.
