56. Mia Ives-Rublee - Accessible Voices “If you are an organization that wants to be extremely open and welcoming to the disability community, you shouldn't go for the bare minimum. You should be attempting to be as accommodating and open as possible because that's going to bring in more talented individuals who are excited about working at your location.” Guest Info: Mia Ives-Rublee is the director for the Disability Justice Initiative at American Progress. Prior to coming to American Progress, she advocated for disability justice and inclusion at nonprofit organizations and businesses across the United States. She has worked with Women's March, Families Belong Together, DC Action Lab, Adoptees for Justice, Fair Fight, People's Collective for Justice and Liberation, and numerous other progressive organizations. Best known for founding the Women's March Disability Caucus, Ives-Rublee helped organize the original Women's March on Washington in 2017. The Women's March was one of the first large-scale events to have certified deaf interpreters on stage. Ives-Rublee's work pushed for better access to disability accommodations at progressive events and more policy platforms inclusive of the disability community. For her work on the Women's March, Ives-Rublee was named by Glamour magazine as one of 2017's Women of the Year Award. She was also recognized by She the People as one of 20 Women of Color in Politics to Watch in 2020 and awarded the 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Social Work. Mia Ives-Rublee worked on several political campaigns during the 2020 cycles. As a North Carolina community regional organizing director for the Elizabeth Warren Campaign for President, she communicated policies and organized events around specific issues affecting the disability and Asian American communities. She volunteered on Warren's Disability Policy Group, helping shape the Disability Policy Platform and developing the campaign's private event accessibility toolkit. During the general election, Ives-Rublee worked as the field director for Down Home NC to encourage rural residents to vote. She also worked with the Asian American Advocacy Fund and the Georgia Disability Vote Partnership to help elect Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) and the Rev. Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) during the 2021 special election. For six years, Ives-Rublee worked as a vocational counselor at the North Carolina Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services to help disabled people obtain substantial employment and connect with services in their communities. She researched alternative mental health diversion programs at UNC Chapel Hill in 2015 and, in 2017, was the confidential assistant to Commissioner Chai Feldblum at the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. At the Ford Foundation in 2019, Ives-Rublee created a Disability Inclusion Toolkit for nonprofit organizations. Ives-Rublee holds a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a master's degree in social work from UNC Chapel Hill. Favorite Quote: “Need to make sure people with disabilities are at the table when policy is being made." — Mia Ives-Rublee R.O.G. Takeaway Tips: 1. Policies Does your organization have an employee handbook? If so, what does your employee handbook say about hiring people with disabilities? What does it say about accommodations? How will you learn more about ADA, SSI, SSDI and Medicaid for your disabled employees? As Mia says, "Make sure people with disabilities are at the table when policy is being made." 2. Accommodations Does your current process include a question to the candidate about accommodations? During the interview, how do you inquire about what accommodations may be needed? Once hired, what accommodations do you offer? What could you offer? Consider how inclusive the interview, hiring, onboarding and employment processes are and how you can make them even better. Los números de crisis de migrantes están detenidos en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México, lo que amenaza con una crisis humana y política al principio de la presidencia de Joe Biden. ¿Qué está impulsando el aumento? Paola Luisi, directora Families Belong Together, señala una combinación de desastres naturales, políticas de la era Trump y posturas pandémicas.
Renowned organizer Jess Morales Rocketto of Families Belong Together joins Zerlina and Jess to talk about President Biden's most-recent executive actions addressing the plight of undocumented immigrants and the remaining work to ensure their full protection under the law.
Rev. Celeste's guest is Rev. Jeffrey Kealoha Ryan, the Senior Minister and Spiritual Director of the Riverside Center for Spiritual Living (riversidecsl.org), and a social justice advocate. He seeks to connect deeply, live consciously and live fiercely. He and his husband, Ed Ryan, met at a spiritual class in Las Vegas, NV.Riverside CSL is diverse and wanted to be more socially active. Rev. Jeffrey's passion came from his grandmother, who taught him compassion. Observing the constant caretaking, compassion and being in service was part of his family and the way they nurtured. He's always been an advocate of making things better. He's always had a sense of wanting to give back.Shortly after Rev. Jeffrey came to the Riverside CSL community, it was just after the children were separated from their parents at the border. The Riverside community put together a vigil for "Families Belong Together" (https://www.familiesbelongtogether.org/) with the Riverside Resistance Revival Chorus and other interfaith organizations. Out of that, he works with Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity. They go to Adelanto Detention Center (http://adelanto-immigration-inmate-info.com/), the state's largest detention center. They accompany asylum seekers to help secure freedom, helping to secure bonds and doing vigils. Riverside's Social Justice program expanded into their neighbors who are experiencing homelessness, foster care, and foster youth. The intersectionality of those things have common roots. They work with other non-profit organizations.Rev. Celeste remembers there being a homeless issue there when she was an intern there 15 years ago. Riverside is a Housing First city. They focus on getting residents into permanent housing. Rev. Jeffrey was one of the original board members of the Riverside chapter of Family Promise who helps family experiencing homelessness. (https://www.facebook.com/FamilyPromiseRiverside/). They also work with Path of Life, the largest local shelter/agency that provides wraparound services (https://www.homelessshelterdirectory.org/cgi-bin/id/shelter.cgi?shelter=11816). Now they have the Office of Homeless Solutions working with Path of Life, with congregations and the three universities in the area that have social work programs. The social work interns are being imbedded in the communities and providing outreach from within the communities themselves.Riverside CSL has a social work intern from one of the universities. The intern is helping to create programs, find solutions and provide services. Riverside CSL sits in a neighborhood and is also right next to Fairmont Park (the largest park in the city). The intern is modifying the Riverside CSL campus to make it safer for their neighbors as well as for the neighbors experiencing homelessness. They have been doing conscious conversations at Riverside CSL, a diverse and inclusive community. They work with Inland Congregations United for Change (https://icucpico.com/) and Time Done (https://timedone.org/) to support our brothers and sisters and siblings who have been impacted by the system and who have been released back into society, helping to support them with providing services, working on expungement issues and working to change policy and at the state and local level as well. Rev. Celeste appreciates Rev. Jeffrey being an ally to her. Diversity and Inclusion was a part of his life growing up in Hawaii. He started his racial awareness work while teaching in a Japanese high school where there was overt and covert racism. He used the PBS documentary series, "Eyes on the Prize" with Japanese subtitles and using Jane Elliott's experiment giving them different colored arm bands to educate them on racial issues.Rev. Celeste shares her poem entitled "We Belong to Each Other".Support the show (http://paypal.me/rev107)
#412: The Amy Ahlers Show is especially for powerful women that are ready to STOP being so darn hard on themselves and end the cycle of burnout, so they can RISE into a leader we can believe in. Show notes for today's episode can be found at www.AmyAhlersShow.com/412 The notorious RBG, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, was one of only 4 women to ever sit on the Supreme Court of the United States. Women make up only 3% of justices (4 out of 114) and it's thanks to RBG that we enjoy so many rights as women. Today we celebrate her and honor her legacy. Listen in to explore: The history of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and why she was such a badass How to honor her legacy with inspired actions to take now: Watch the RBG movie and bask in her glow Sign the MoveOn.org petition to not fill her seat until after the election: Contact Senators that are most likely to block a confirmation: Mitt Romney of Utah and Charles E. Grassley of Iowa may be possible dissenters, too, as might Cory Gardner of Colorado. You can contact each of these senators' offices and tell them why you think it's important to postpone the confirmation until after the election. Call all these senators who said they would block voting in a supreme court justice in an election year Donate to organizations that are working to replace Republican Senators such as Flip the Senate or Swing Left. Donate and become a member of American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Help organizations like Families Belong Together fight for immigrant rights and follow me on Instagram and Facebook, as I'm working with a local group to plan a vigil for those in ICE custody

While The Rabble is on break, we are revisiting some of our favorite, most impactful, or most moving episodes. This episode originally aired on June 28, 2019. Since its debut, it has continued to be our most-downloaded episode. In the midst of the horrors at the border, it is comforting that so many people want to know how they can stop them. We ourselves were desperate to understand what was happening to child migrants and how we could help, so we made an episode all about just that. Plus, in a surreal twist of fate, Becky's pansexual stan Texas State Rep. Mary González (who inspired Becky to come out on our June 21 episode) represents the district where the Clint facility is (the one that made news this summer). Rep. González is our special guest along with guest host Dr. Cheasty Anderson, one of the most knowledgeable humans on the topic of child detention. SUPPORT ROUSER'S NEW PATREON PAGE! Welcome Betzy Valdez of @bempowereddreamer to Episode 92 of the @immigrationmicpodcast! Betzy is a DACA recipient from Central Mexico whose family immigrated to Colorado for a better life for their family; her sister was born with bilateral microtia and needed specialized care. Growing up, Betzy hid her good grades and intelligence to fit in, and similarly, she was uncomfortable with immigration conversations because she felt it would bring up her immigration status. 9/11 marked an important moment for her; she felt it became a hopeless situation to find relief for her immigration status or to obtain residency. She talks about her life transitions: getting married at 19, having her first child at 20, and how her three daughters motivate her to push forward. Betzy describes her inner struggles being undocumented in high school, and how after DACA in 2012, she was able to go back to school, and is working towards her associates degree; her way of going after the American Dream. We talk about the 2016 election, and how Betzy was crushed by DACA being ended in 2017 - and how she fought against the negativity during that time, and didn’t let it defeat her. She tells the story of when she unexpectedly first told her story at a networking event, and the fateful moment that she knew she was destined to tell her story to empower herself and others. Betzy is using the page @bempowereddreamer as a way to express herself and share her story widely, and talks about how the challenges at the federal level has brought something else out of her to fight for change. This week, we talk with Greg Sargent of the Washington Post about his new book, “An Uncivil War,” which details the many ways that Trump and the GOP are actively working to erode our democracy, engaging in every from voter suppression and disenfranchisement, to working to undermine our institutions like the courts and media. But he believes the press has held up, in part because of the way that sources like the Washington Post cover Trump's lies. Also, following the harrowing reports on the crisis of migrant families at the Mexico border in California, including footage of children being teargassed, the organization Families Belong Together has called for nationwide rallies called Stop the Tears, and we're joined by Palmira Figueroa, who's organizing Sunday's event in Seattle, to give us details. And finally, we'll hear from Indivisible WA 8 research team leader Stephen Wilhelm about this week's calls to action. The family separation crisis at the border happened quickly and lawyers played a key role in helping families. Efren Olivares, director of the Racial and Economic Justice Section for the Texas Civil Rights Project ("TCRP"), along with a dedicated team, spent every day in court meeting and working with families. In this episode, we discuss what it is like to be at the center of a crisis, how lawyers have the power to offer solutions, how Efren decided to get involved and how TCRP is continuing to work to reunite families. This podcast was created by the Texas Young Lawyers Association, and no part of it may be reproduced without the written consent of TYLA. The opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the TYLA or the State Bar of Texas. The information in this podcast is provided as a resource of general information and is not intended to replace legal advice. We recommend our listeners conduct their own research and exercise their own judgment. An update on the immigrant children crisis. At the time of recording, we had no idea that the government has almost 13,000 children in detention. The Trump administration is now trying to quietly expand the program, making tent cities larger, and making their inhumane policies law. The cruelty cannot continue. Recorded on 9/11/18, we talk about our memories of 9/11 and the impact on our lives.

The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy
An interview with Heather Walker Janz, LMFT – Curt and Katie talk with Heather about being a therapist and being an activist as well as the challenges of being in the public eye during a national campaign. Heather’s call to action: step up and use your voice! It’s time to reimagine therapy and what it means to be a therapist. We are human beings who can now present ourselves as whole people, with authenticity, purpose, and connection. Especially now, when therapists must develop a personal brand to market their practices. To support you as a whole person and a therapist, your hosts, Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy talk about how to approach the role of therapist in the modern age. Interview with Heather Walker Janz, LMFT Heather Janz, LMFT, has established a private practice in California’s central valley serving teens and young adults referred through the Juvenile Justice Center, hospitals, and county mental health crisis centers. Heather inspires her clients and fellow mental health professionals by modeling assertiveness and positive communication through activism and advocacy. She is the current president of her local chapter of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CSJV-CAMFT) and has also been involved in several movements including The Women’s March, Families Belong Together, and March For Our Lives. You can learn more about Heather at www.heatherjanz.com. In this episode we talk about: Being a therapist during a campaign How Heather is navigating the complexities of being visible in the campaign where her husband is a democrat running to be the representative for Congressional District 22 The challenges of being a therapist during a national campaign How Heather has processed her visibility and the campaign with her clients The unexpected benefits of Heather’s personal life being so public, within her clinical work The challenges of having different political views than clients – how to process it with clients The benefits of being on record related to specific more controversial issues How she has transitioned from having no visibility (as directed in school) to being in most of her clients’ mailboxes The idea that clients need us to take care of them by being so invisible How Heather screens new clients in and out to make sure that clients are not sensationalized related to the election The additional steps Heather will take to protect her clients’ confidentiality on social media Heather’s lack of confidentiality and how she relies on her ability to remain genuine in all spaces The surprises that have come during the campaign How to diminish the impact of the external stuff (campaign or personal matters) and the strict boundaries that Heather holds to shift the conversation to the clinical material The supports that Heather has put in place to manage her work, the campaign, her own volunteer work The self-care practices that Heather has put into place, how she has learned to say “no” Advice for others seeking to enter politics as a therapist Why it is so important that we step up, even if we don’t know if we’re ready, we can’t wait How our activism can give our clients hope How therapists as mental health experts interacting with legislators and staffers can decrease mental health stigma Resources mentioned: We’ve pulled together any resources mentioned in this episode and put together some handy-dandy links. In this episode, Nic and Mere unpack the Families Belong Together rally they attended in Denver. As they processed their experience, the conversation quickly transitioned to a dialogue about the impact of dehumanizing and demonizing the ‘other side’ and how it chips away at our common humanity. We also unpack how we can hold space for curiosity toward ourselves and others.

With the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court by Donald Trump, many pro-life Americans are rejoicing at the pick. Their hope is that Kavanaugh's elevation to the Court will signal the end of Roe v. Wade, the US Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion nationwide. Jaye explores the question - what will happen if Roe is set aside by the US Supreme Court? Will this achieve the goal of ending abortion, or is that truly the goal? And - to Americans who are staunchly pro-life regarding abortion, is symbolism more important than the outcome of protecting life? Also - Jaye shares her experiences attending the Families Belong Together Rally in Cincinnati, Ohio. This was one of many around the country protesting the Trump Administration's immigration policies June 30, including the policy of family separation at the US-Mexico Border. Retreating to the Blanket Fort Emerging with Purpose What can you do when so much of the news can easily fill you with blinding anger? What happens when the anger becomes all too much? This week, Robin Renée, Mary McGinley, and Wendy Sheridan contemplate outrage fatigue and the never-ending stream that seems designed to wear us down. They consider ways the outrage can be transformed to raw energy and then to positive action - such as focusing on a primary activist issue like reproductive rights, writing to representatives (Wendy has created handy We The People postcards for that), using Resistbot, or starting a podcast. A big question emerges: Will Wendy run for office? In other news, there is encouragement from the nationwide Families Belong Together protests and recent court orders imposing a greater need for cause in the detention of immigrants and quick reunions of immigrant parents and children who were separated at the border. Wendy speaks of the passing of Harlan Ellison, his beloved writing, and how he elevated science fiction to an art form. Robin remembers Alan Longmuir, co-founder of the Bay City Rollers. Mary recognizes Sarah Eismann for her recent, remarkable feat of Swimming for Shakespeare in order to raise awareness about the Shakespeare Behind Bars program. PSA: Heat Exhaustion or Heat Stroke

A mini-episode where I talk about the June 30th Families Belong Together protest and explain what borders really are.
Neither Marvin Gaye nor Howard Beale were available to be on today's show (funny how that happens when you're dead or fictional *and* dead) but Cognitive Dissidents Michelle March, 'The Black Voice of Reason' Tymon Shipp, and Dr. David Robinson are mad as hell and the erosion of our liberties make us wanna holler that we're not gonna take it anymore! As hundreds of thousands of Americans marched in the streets to say that Families Belong Together, we were in studio to talk about our ailing Constitution and the Conservative vultures who can't wait to pick at its corpse. But first, they're gonna pick its pockets and bleed it dry. While we're flipping out, we're still hoping Paul Manafort will flip on, so send him a spatula to let him know that America still matters! Take all that, throw in a 'Burst of Durst' from five-time Emmy nominee Will Durst, and you've got yourself your weekly dose of newsy infotainment! Get dosed! #SpatulasForManafort

It’s been a week of historic Supreme Court decisions, continued hostility toward immigrants, and raging debates over what it means to be “civil.” Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal comes back on the show to help us make sense of it all—and to remind people to turn out on June 30 for the nationwide “Families Belong Together” protests. After that, noted civility experts Dan Savage and Rich Smith offer their takes on whether it’s wrong to shun Trump administration apparatchiks at restaurants. They also talk about what it means that 28-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, just won a huge upset victory against Congressman Joseph Crowley, a major Democratic Party establishment figure, in a New York City primary election. Rich, of course, takes a bow for seeing this millennial victory coming from a long way out. And Dan reveals the shocking truth about his longtime support for the DSA. Finally, Chase Burns talks about one beautiful thing that’ll make you stop cowering under the sheets: a new FX series called Pose, about the drag ball scene in 1980s New York. Plus, as always, the music of Ahamefule J. Oluo.
On Episode 169 of the Mama Bear Dares Podcast, Tesi and Leslie knash teeth over the horror going on at the southwest border. With facts to back up their rage, the two women talk about the atrocity of migrant mothers and children being ripped apart at the border, about how the current administration has wrongfully used the bible to oppress, and how Mama Bears must refuse to sit back and watch it happen. The women remind listeners that without ethics, laws are just stories to tell to justify horror. They encourage Mama Bears throughout the country to do whatever is in their power to RESIST and offer tangible steps of how to do so. For complete Show Notes, visit the Mama Bear Dares website.
