If the rising demand for therapists is any indication, people are taking their mental health more seriously these days. This episode of In Depth is hosted by KCBS Radio news anchors Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart, who hosted a panel on the state of mental health in the Bay Area at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek. Reising and Burkhart spoke with four panelists: Juan Acosta is a youth mental health advocate, LGBTQ+ activist, content creator, and public speaker. Amanda Lai is a high-school student, a competitive fencer, and a student representative for Mind Out Loud, a youth-led mental health movement. Nicole Stelter is the director of behavioral health at Blue Shield California and the clinician specializing in occupational behavioral therapy. Lesley Garcia is the director of programs at the Contra Costa Crisis Center, a Walnut-Creek-based nonprofit providing free mental health services to community members in need.

Our guest today is a mental health advocate. As a 1st generation immigrant, he began his advocacy at the early age of 13, and by the time he was 21, he drafted an historic LGBTQ+ proclamation for his hometown of Woodland California. After graduating from San Francisco State University, Juan's work is focused on underserved communities, specifically on the LGBTQ+, Immigrant, and Latinx communities. Having served on various national committee's, he regularly speaks at national conferences and festivals, including the United Nations Side Events and the White House' first-ever Youth Mental Health Action Forum where he spoke alongside FLOTUS Dr. Jill Biden, Selena Gomez, and U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy. While we could keep listing his accomplishments, as they are many, today we're going to focus the conversation on the language or semantic of mental health, and the need for a safe space in which to do so.

In a semi post-pandemic world, there's no doubt that global health is still very much a problem - especially when it comes to inequity and access. Leveling the playing field in places where there are very little resources to go around, or in places that aren't even aware they desperately need help, can feel overwhelming and near impossible. Especially in the mental health space. Our guests today prove that sometimes giving your time, compassion and skill set towards a cause are priceless resources just as vital as financial contributions. In this episode, hear from Juan Acosta – a mental health advocate and regional manager at CalHOPE Warm Line at Mental Health Association of San Francisco who began his work at the young age of 13, and Dr. Karry Jose Felix, Chief Surgeon at Doctors Without Borders. Both guests talk about their journey within their organizations, and how they've brought their lived experiences to help their communities to create a bigger, lasting impact for health access and change.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On Tuesday a gunman killed at least 19 children, 1 teacher, and at least 1 other adult in an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. These precious children were killed while simply attending school are now among the thousands of young people injured or killed by guns during the past year. In fact, analysis of CDC data recently published by the New England Journal of Medicine reveals that in 2020 firearms became the leading cause of death for young Americans. In December, the U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued a public health advisory on the youth mental health crisis that has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. The rate of death by self-inflicted gunshot wound has risen faster among adolescents and teens than any other group. We speak to Dr. Michael Lindsey, Executive Director at the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research at New York University, to better understand death by suicide and its connection of the mental health of young people. A school shooting like this is an enraging act of violence which can lead young people who are already struggling, to feel even more vulnerable, distraught, or hopeless. We spoke to three young people who have faced mental health challenges and have all become advocates for their own well-being and that of their peers, before the mass shooting in Uvalde, and we think that this event makes it even more crucial to keep thinking about the emotional well-being and mental health of young people. We heard from Diana Chao, founder and executive director of Letters to Strangers, Juan Acosta, mental health advocate, and Charlie Lucas, co-founder of the notOK app.

Jesus said: “I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them. This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd. This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again. This command I have received from my Father.” -- Narration by Juan Acosta. Music by Pictures of the floating world. Produced and owned by Tabella, the social network and faith app for Catholics. --
Jesus said: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber. But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice, as the shepherd calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has driven out all his own, he walks ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they recognize his voice. But they will not follow a stranger; they will run away from him, because they do not recognize the voice of strangers.” Although Jesus used this figure of speech, the Pharisees did not realize what he was trying to tell them. So Jesus said again, “Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.” -- Narration by Juan Acosta. Music by Largo JS.Bach. Published and owned by Tabella, the app for Catholics
Many of the disciples of Jesus who were listening said, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, “Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the Spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father.” As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer walked with him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to leave?” Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” -- Music by Chad Crouch. Narration by Juan Acosta. Owned and published by Tabella, the Catholic faith app.
The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his Flesh to eat?” Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the Flesh of the Son of Man and drink his Blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my Flesh is true food, and my Blood is true drink. Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.” These things he said while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. -- Narration by Juan Acosta. Music by Livio Amato. Produced and owned by Tabella, the faith app for Catholics
Jesus said to the crowds: “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is written in the prophets: They shall all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my Flesh for the life of the world.” -- Narration by Juan Acosta. Music by Livio Amato. Produced and owned by Tabella, the faith app for Catholics --
Jesus said to the crowds, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. But I told you that although you have seen me, you do not believe. Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me, because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me. And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day.” -- Bible Reading by Juan Acosta. Music by Livio Amato. Produced and owned by Tabella, the faith app for Catholics
The crowd said to Jesus: “What sign can you do, that we may see and believe in you? What can you do? Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: "He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” So Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” So they said to Jesus, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.” Narration by Juan Acosta. Music by: Rafael Krux. Produced and owned by Tabella, the Catholic faith app.
[After Jesus had fed the five thousand men, his disciples saw him walking on the sea.] The next day, the crowd that remained across the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not gone along with his disciples in the boat, but only his disciples had left. Other boats came from Tiberias near the place where they had eaten the bread when the Lord gave thanks. When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus. And when they found him across the sea they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” Jesus answered them and said, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.” So they said to him, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.” Narration by Juan Acosta. Music by Livio Amato. Produced and owned by Tabella, the Catholic faith app.
Jesus appeared to the Eleven and said to them: “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs. -- Narration by Juan Acosta. Music by Livato Amato. Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee. A large crowd followed him, because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick. Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. The Jewish feast of Passover was near. When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said to Philip, “Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?” He said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do. Philip answered him, “Two hundred days' wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little.” One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?” Jesus said, “Have the people recline.” Now there was a great deal of grass in that place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted. When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples, “Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted.” So they collected them, and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat. When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, “This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world.” Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain alone. -- Music by: Rafael Krux Narration by: Juan Acosta, founder of Tabella Tabella is the community faith app for Catholics
The one who comes from above is above all. The one who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of earthly things. But the one who comes from heaven is above all. He testifies to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. Whoever does accept his testimony certifies that God is trustworthy. For the one whom God sent speaks the words of God. He does not ration his gift of the Spirit. The Father loves the Son and has given everything over to him. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him. -- This Bible reading is produced and owned by Tabella, the Catholic faith app Narration by Juan Acosta and Music by Livio Amato
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” Now, Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name. The U.S. labor movement is in an interesting place. The strikes of first teachers and now hotel workers are showing the depths of anger among workers about years of disrespect and stagnant wages—and a capacity for self-organization and solidarity that hasn’t been seen for decades in many unions. At same time, the number of workers in unions remains low, the laws and most elected officials are hostile to labor, and too many union leaders have been slow to take up this new fighting spirit. This episode looks at how these dynamics are playing out in a couple of key private-sector companies. First, labor solidarity activist Flynn Murray joins Danny to talk to UPS drivers and Teamsters Local 804 members Anthony Rosario and Juan Acosta about the movement they’re involved in to reject a concessionary national contract being pushed by the international union. Then we speak with a Delta baggage handler about the potentially historic organizing campaign that he and his fellow baggage handlers are leading to unionize with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). Dr. Juan Acosta-Urquidi, PhD, QEEGT https://www.neuroshamanism.com After more than 20 years of laboratory basic research in cellular neurophysiology, mainly on invertebrate nervous systems, investigating such topics as: mechanisms of synaptic plasticity, biophysical mechanisms involved in learning and memory, neuromodulation of membrane ion channels and intracellular signaling messengers, Dr. Acosta entered the field of QEEG (quantitative electroencephalography) in 1996. Initially, he worked with QEEG to test photic and auditory driving responses to mind machines AVE). He then joined an NIH-funded project in alternative medicine at the University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle, WA. to study pulsed magnetotherapy treatment on neurologic patients suffering MS. While still there, a chance discovery lead him to pursue research with Energy Healers, at a time when he was initiated as a Reiki Master. Using an electrocrystal detector device he recorded electromagnetic signals emanating from Energy Healers during the state of “sending”, or “channeling” energy. He has measured brainwave changes during the state of energy healing in over 30 healers of diverse traditions, including Shamans. These EEG topographic brain maps, with the recent addition of HRV (heart rate variability) measurements, have been yielding rich data on the heart-brain exchange, charting new ground in the research interface of Science, Healing and Spirituality. Dr Juan has also been conducting pioneering EEG studies of entheogen-induced visionary states, including Salvia divinorum, Ayahuasca and natural sources of N,N-DMT and 5-MeO-DMT, as well as EEG of meditation states and neurotechnology devices.
An intimate dinner party-neuroscience conversation with experiential journalist Rak Razam, Dr. Juan Acosta, the 'mad scientist on the frontiers of consciousness' that starred in the film Aya: Awakenings, and Cheryl. Dr Juan has mapped EEG data from subjects legally ingesting Salvia Divinorum, 5-MeO-DMT, experiencing kundalini activation and monks meditating. Neuroscience can now map our brain states, but it takes a real neuroshaman to tell what occurs experientially within the journey itself… And why does nature make these substances that fit our brain systems, anyway? Can the EEG data sets recorded from one subject be rolled out onto the mindfield of another subject via neurofeedback? Can we electronically stimulate and repeat these transcendental experiences? How does language change the brain? When both psychedelics and meditation shut off the Default Mode Network what happens to the brain? Is the brain structure is like an ecosystem that mirrors the planetary ecology, which is itself a nested consciousness? Was the 'fall' into consciousness the turning ON of the species' Default Mode Network? Is the imagination a receiver of the infinite fields of Gaian consciousness we are embedded in? Oh, a feast of ideas awaits you! The groundbreaking shamanic documentary Aya: Awakenings is now available for viewing and download on Vimeo on Demand and you can read the book that inspired the film and join the discussion on our Facebook page.
