This week, my guest is watercolour artist Lisa Gardner. Lisa is inspired by the natural world, the connection between breath and brushwork and rare wild plant species on the edge of extinction - seemingly far flung interests that come together in a beautifully natural and synergistic way in Lisa's work. About Lisa Gardener Lisa Gardner is a watercolour artist inspired by the natural world, the connection between breath and brushwork and rare wild plant species on the edge of extinction. Passionate about wild plants and the vital role they play in the health of our environment, Lisa's  art strives to connect people to nature, to improve their wellbeing, and inspire action to save species and their habitats. Links Lisa has created 6 video workshops that share her journey with Plantlife, they can be found here.   Short film mentioned in the interview    Plantlife's important work can be found here.   Information on the Grassland Action Plan Lisa and Plantlife are campaigning for can be found here.   You can also get involved and volunteer for the National Plant Monitoring Scheme.   Other episodes if you liked this one: Garden Sculpture  - This episode I'm speaking to Victoria Leedham, Co-Curator and Gallery Manager of the Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden. I visited the garden earlier this month and even in winter garb, it was beautiful, set as it is in ancient woodland with streams running through it that pour down from Leith Hill in Surrey. The sculptures in the garden are diverse in character and look stunning within the location, each one fitting harmoniously into the backdrop of planting and landscape. Victoria is responsible for sourcing and placing sculpture in the garden, alongside owner garden designer Anthony Paul. We spoke about Victoria's work, about the sculpture garden and also how you can select and place sculptures in your own garden.

'...I was always more drawn to modern art. But I love all art. I'll go to any museum; whether they show ancient or modern art. But I specialized in modern art, because it's always excited me; like its new ways of making, new ways of viewing things. That's always fascinated me. And I was always, during my studies, always writing about new art and avant-garde art. Surrealism was a huge interest of mine. Futurism; Dadaism; all these 'isms' from the 20s. And then, of course, conceptual art from the 60s. These new types of ideas have always excited me; made me want to push boundaries, and stretch ideas, of what art is, and can be.' —Anne de Jong For the sixth episode of 'Dutch Art & Design Today', I sat down with Anne de Jong; Gallery Manager and Curator at Upstream Gallery in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I first became aware of Anne's work when I stopped by the exhibition 'Future Bodies' at the gallery in October of 2022; an exhibit about the human body in relation to technology, as manifested in works created by eight different artists that encompassed the show. The exhibition was the first that Anne has curated at Upstream Gallery, where she has worked since 2015. Anne studied art history, then modern and contemporary art, at the University of Amsterdam, where she received her BA and MA degrees, and where she developed her academic interest in digital art, spurring from her love of art 'isms'. In this episode, we discuss her love of art and how she came to be collaborating with, what is arguably one of the most digitally progressive art galleries in Amsterdam; her ideas behind the curation process of staging the exhibit 'Future Bodies', and why she included the artists she did; her thoughts on art and the blockchain; and what makes Upstream the leading Dutch gallery in the field of digital artist representation. In her role, she collaborates with some of the leading artists working in digital formats—including NFTs—today; such as Jan Robert Leegte and Harm van den Dorpel. To conclude; Anne discusses her thoughts on NFTs; and we both share a moment of joy when we learn we both own an NFT, from Marina Abramovic's genesis Tezos NFT collection, 'The Hero'. You can find out more about Upstream Gallery on their website and Instagram. You can find John on X @johnbezold and at his website johnbezold.com. Europas fødevarekoncerner dropper buræg i chokolade, is og kiks. En række firmaer og kæder har allerede fjernet buræg fra hylderne og 10 fødevarekoncerner sender et brev til EU-kommissionen med opfordring om at forbyde buræg og forpligte sig til at udfase brugen inden 2025. Guests: Ayana Zaire Cotton and Jennifer Lillis Hosts: Christopher Kardambikis and Adriana Monsalve Recorded on July 29th, 2020 in collaboration with Transformer as part of the E17: Zines program. Ayana Zaire Cotton is a transdisciplinary artist, designer, technologist, and educator, visualizing and collectively crafting a post-work future. Her practice is rooted in black feminist, pedagogy, mutual aid, open source philosophy, labor, and black aesthetics research. This research has manifested in her work via independent publishing, virtually teaching software engineering to students worldwide, and an experimental clothing line as a platform for researching labor studies and aesthetics. As an artist, designer, and software engineer Ayana feels “educator” is a title that most resonates with the full possibilities of her mediums, goals, and practice. Jennifer Lillis is a multi-disciplinary artist, teacher, and administrator in Northern Virginia. She received her MFA in Visual Art from George Mason University in 2019, and her BA in Studio Art from Marymount University in 2012. Jennifer’s work explores the theme of transformation in the function and materiality of objects through the ritualization of her creative practice. She is currently the Gallery Manager at the McLean Project for the Arts, on the coordinating committee of MPAartfest, Adjunct Professor in Printmaking at George Mason University, co-producer of Paper Cuts, and founder of the print and book collective ELEMENTS. Adriana Monsalve is an artist, book maker, and educator, located in the DMV. She is the co-founder of Homie House Press, a skeleton bones crew of femmes creating, publishing, and reclaiming their space and power in the foto book medium. Within her photographic practice, Monsalve is a storyteller & visual communicator producing in-depth stories on identity through the nuances in between race, gender, and immigrant adjacent experiences. Transformer’s annual spring Exercises for Emerging Artists program is a peer critique and mentorship program created to support a selected group of DC-based emerging artists at critical points or crossroads in their professional growth and creative development. Centered on a different artistic discipline every year, this year’s iteration - E17: Zines - focused on zines and DIY publishing. E17: Zines artists include: Ayana Zaire Cotton, Jennifer Lillis, Athena Naylor, Late Comeback Press (Rachna Soun and Caroline Kim), Evyan Roberts, and Julie Sheah. Intended to both advance artists' careers and build peer support, Transformer’s Exercises consists of comprehensive bi-weekly peer critique and mentorship sessions spanning several months to stimulate and encourage the participating artists as they create new work. Facilitated by Transformer staff, the participating artists receive mentorship and feedback from a series of mentors comprised of more established artists, curators, and other arts leaders. In response to COVD-19, all E17: Zines peer critique & mentorship sessions were conducted via Zoom calls this spring. As the traditional, in person, culminating summer exhibition of works created through the program is not feasible this year, this poster highlights the artworks each artist created through E17: Zines. Join us for our second episode of In Conversation with Black Box Projects where we welcome Danish contemporary artist Adam Jeppesen to chat about his Flatlands Camp Project series, his new book Error, Object, Structure and his travels as a wandering artist. Adam Jeppesen is arguably best-known for his Flatlands Camp Project series which was born out of an epic 487-day journey from the north pole to the south across the America’s. The journey was mainly taken on foot, sometimes on bicycle, a little by car … but all of it was solitary. For over ten years Adam mined the content from this series to create seminal works such as X-copy, Folded, Ghost and Scatter. This experience went on to inform and inspire future series of works that reference themes and processes first explored in the Flatlands Camp Project. The images from this journey are of remote, rugged landscapes which are suffused with a sense of tranquility, reflection and contemplation. This series conveys a search for spirituality, but it also addresses the materiality and transience of the photograph as an object. Coincidence, damage and imperfection are essential elements in Adam’s work.Adam Jeppesen, born in 1978 in Kalundborg, Denmark, first gained international recognition with his "Wake" series, which was published in 2008 by Steidl in book format. In 2009, Jeppesen was nominated for both the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize and the KLM Paul Huf Award. His work has been exhibited worldwide and is present in the collection at the Denver Art Museum (USA), the Danish Arts Foundation, the National Public Art Council in Sweden, the National Museum of Photography in Denmark, as well as in numerous private collections. Adam Jeppesen lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Anna Kirrage began her career at The Fleming Collection before working for The London Original Print Fair. IN CONVERSATION with Black Box Projects

At Black Box Projects we believe in the transformative role art can play both in our daily lives and within the context of the medical treatment and mental health. Art has the potential to change us, to brighten spirits, to soothe, to challenge and fulfil. Join us as we discuss navigating art’s role in mental health and art engagement in these unprecedented times. IN CONVERSATION with Black Box Projects welcomes artist Steve Macleod and Co-Founders of Hospital Rooms - curator Niamh White and artist Tim A. Shaw - to discuss the role of art in mental health, the art of happiness and the important work of Hospital Rooms. Professor Steve Macleod is an artist whose practice discards the modernist approach to realist interpretation of his landscape compositions for one that uses the landscape as visual metaphors describe historical and humanist subjects that connect us with the environment we inhabit. The resulting works are layered with meaning and mood, where the artist’s emotional intent is conveyed through atmospheric suggestion and imagination. Hospital Rooms is an arts and mental health charity that commissions world-class art and implements art programmes for NHS mental health services in the UK. Artist Tim A. Shaw and curator Niamh White founded Hospital Rooms after a close friend was sectioned and admitted to a mental health hospital. On visiting her, they were shocked to find that the hospital environment was cold and clinical at a time when she was so vulnerable. Having worked in the arts for 10 years each, they felt they had the skills and community to be able to transform these spaces with high quality artworks and spaces for healing. In 2016, Dr Emma Whicher (now one of Hospital Rooms’ trustees) gave them the opportunity to run their first project at the Phoenix Unit, a rehabilitation unit for people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Here they commissioned Nick Knight, Gavin Turk, Steve Macleod, Assemble - among other world class artists - to work with patients and staff to create site specific artwork for the ward. The project received national press attention and Hospital Rooms has been inundated with requests for projects ever since. This episode I’m speaking to Victoria Leedham, Co-Curator and Gallery Manager of the Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden. We spoke about Victoria’s work, about the sculpture garden and also how you can select and place sculptures in your own garden. About the Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden: “The Sculpture Garden was the brainchild of owner and original curator Hannah Peschar 36 years ago, and has grown from a handful of sculptures to over 200 pieces exhibited every summer. Artists come from across Britain and Europe to exhibit their work in these breathtaking surroundings, allowing their sculptures to be seen in a whole new way. The Garden used to be part of a large estate, laid out between 1915 and 1920. Later it was split up and sold in several lots; leaving the 15th Century, grade 2 listed cottage with ten acres of land including a large water and rock garden. The garden fell rapidly into decline after the estate was sold. Over the past 40 years the garden has been redesigned and replanted by award-winning landscape designer Anthony Paul, who has introduced many large-leaved plants in bold groups, tall grasses and created 3 new ponds. The range of works selected by the curators is wide with styles varying from figurative to highly abstract, innovatively using contemporary metals, wire, glass, ceramics and plastics as well as the more traditional stone, wood and bronze. Each sculpture is placed in a carefully considered and meaningful relationship with the other featured works within the garden. The result is an inspired combination of peaceful, enclosed harmony and dramatic, surprise vistas in an ever-changing environment. Throughout the 37 year lifetime of the Garden, the overriding theme is the powerful relationship between art and nature. Neither one outshines the other: every piece is placed in harmony with its surrounding to create an amazing synergy within the environment.” - http://www.hannahpescharsculpture.com/about What We Discuss: The ethos behind the Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden Considerations around placing sculpture in the garden, including planting and lighting A discussion of the different materials used and their pros and cons Choosing sculpture for and placing it in your own garden Links: Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden www.hannahpescharsculpture.com  The Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden Black & White Cottage, Standon Lane, Ockley, Dorking, Surrey, RH5 5QR Telephone: (+44) (0) 1306 627 269  Email: hannahpescharsculpture@gmail.com Re-opens for the year from 3rd April 2020  Get in touch: Email podcast@rootsandall.co.uk  Website www.rootsandall.co.uk  Twitter @rootsandall  Instagram @rootsandallpod  Patreon Link: Help me keep the podcast free & independent! In response to the end of 2019, I reviewed the rejections that I had received this year as an artist. Besides self doubts and down feelings, I believed that there must be more that I could unpack from these unsuccessful results. Although it is known that receiving rejection is a common experience for most of contemporary practicing artists, within the art community, we barely mention and share about our sense of failure in our art career. Why? Maybe rejections are too embarrassing to talk about. Or perhaps we try very hard to forget about them. By the end of 2019, I refuse to internalise these rejections solely again. For the questions: Why was I rejected? What should I think about the rejection? How could I emotionally cope with the rejection?, I invited four curators, writers and visual artists: Sophia Cai, Diego Ramirez, Nikki Lam and James Nguyen to share their experiences in receiving rejections in the art. I hope our conversation would be helpful for many other artist listeners.** Our conversation went for nearly 2 hour long. In an organic order, the four speakers came in and left the conversation at various points due to their availabilities on that day. Therefore, it was divided into two episodes. Also, I kept some background noises in the sound tracks, such as the sound of door bells, of chewing, of a kettle boiling, etc.. I apologise if they might be too much of annoyance for the listeners. It was because 1, it was difficult to separate them from our voices; 2, I did want to convey the domestic and relaxed atmosphere where our conversation was conduced.Anyway, enjoy this special podcast conversation! "As an artist you have to remember that you are always working. And you’re not just working when you are in the studio actually making something. You are working when you’re sleeping, dreaming, reading, looking at other peoples art, having conversations, and tripping over a rock. It’s all a part of your practice. To be able to embrace every element of your life as being a part of your practice takes the pressure off of going to the studio and the blank page. Just think of your studio as another tool." Bio courtesy of Alyssa's website Alyssa Taylor Wendt (http://alyssataylorwendt.com/projects/) is a multidisciplinary artist, filmmaker and curator that works in Austin, Texas and Detroit, Michigan. Her recent projects reference themes of ritual, animism, monuments, mysticism, the primordial, architecture, gender and mortality using video, sculpture, staged photographs, sound and performance. The work tends to provoke questions in the viewer with dark and evocative aesthetics and multiple layers of perceived truth. She earned her BA from NYU and her MFA from Bard College. Transplanted from New York City, she has shown in numerous national and international exhibitions and performed at The Museum of Art and Design in New York, envoy gallery, The Fusebox Festival and Deitch Projects and completed residencies in Iceland and Norway. She is currently finishing her opus multi-channel video work HAINT and just curated an epic exhibition about death and transformation with over 60 artists at DEMO Gallery in Austin. She enjoys darkness, gospel blues and bad jokes. The following text courtesy of the Visual Arts Center website Alyssa Taylor Wendt: HAINT (https://sites.utexas.edu/utvac/alyssa-taylor-wendt-haint/) January 25 – February 22, 2019 HAINT is an immersive, three-channel video installation by Austin-based artist and curator Alyssa Taylor Wendt. Filmed over the course of three years in Croatia, Detroit, and Texas, the individual channels unfold in counterpoint with one another to create a haunting meditation on the ways we process history, both as individuals and as a culture. The piece draws on motifs from Wendt’s personal cosmology and explores the associative powers of perception, cycles of history and ruination, and the spiritual energy that objects, the landscape, and architectural spaces carry with them. Using Eastern European songs, voiceover, opera, black metal drones, and ambient sound, HAINT combines images of post-war architecture, monuments, and ruins to create a poetic investigation of war, memory, and storytelling. In addition to the video, the exhibition includes sculptural elements and a collection of staged production photographs that intersect with the video’s multifaceted narrative. This exhibition is organized by MacKenzie Stevens, Director, Visual Arts Center, with Clare Donnelly, Gallery Manager, Visual Arts Center and Robin K. She investigates complex topics and social tensions through the use of the personal; often creating works depicting family, friends, and people in her community, and personal experiences, to reflect the subtle and not-so-subtle integrations of these ideas into individual lives and identities. Barlow received her BFA in 2011 from the University of Wisconsin- Stout and her MFA in 2016 from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Leslie Barlow has received great recognition from her home state of Minnesota. She appeared in the season 7 television segment of tpt's Minnesota Original, airing April 2016, was published in the "Best New Art 2016" list in Minnesota Monthly Magazine, and was published as "Artist of the Year" for 2016 in the City Pages. Recently she received a Third Place award in the Minnesota State Fair Juried Exhibition in 2015 for a large oil painting from her latest series. In 2014, another painting from the same series also received an Honorable Mention in the national juried exhibition at the Washington Pavilion Museum of Arts and Sciences in Sioux Falls, SD. Barlow actively exhibits her work throughout the United States and many of her pieces can be found in private and public collections. Her work can be seen at the new US Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis, where in 2016 she was commissioned by the Vikings team to create 6 portrait paintings of iconic Vikings players. Maintaining a vigorous studio practice, Barlow has also recently participated in artist residencies including the 3 x 5 Emerging Artist Residency at The Soap Factory (Minneapolis, MN) and she was the Artist-in-Residence at Whitworth University (Spokane, WA) for the month of October, 2016.  Her studio is located in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.  In addition to her studio practice, Barlow currently works as an Assistant Instructor at Juxtaposition Arts, as the Administrative Assistant for Northern Lights.mn, and is a board member of the Minneapolis Art Lending Library.  Barlow has a keen interest in arts programming and organization management, and has over 400 hours of volunteer work with the Soap Factory, serving as the Public Relations Intern in 2011 and as Co-Director of the Volunteer Biennial exhibition in 2012.  Barlow has also worked as the Gallery Manager for Waiting Room, helped manage the Art Department at Anoka-Ramsey Community College, and during her undergraduate education Barlow helped start and manage an artist co-op gallery.
