We're diving into Tree: Exploring the Arboreal World—a seriously stunning collection of art, history, and culture, centred around the human-tree connection.  This book documents the historical significance of trees throughout human history, society and culture. This really is the coffee table book to end all coffee table books for anyone with even so much as a passing interest in trees. About Tree: Exploring the Arboreal World This exquisite survey presents a breathtaking sequence of full-page images – from landscape paintings and botanical drawings to ancient frescos, vintage book illustrations and contemporary photographs – revealing the tree as a source of inspiration throughout history. Spanning continents and cultures, Tree reflects the diversity of its subject, depicting giant sequoias, cherry blossoms, palms, poplars, ginkgoes and other species found across Earth's forest biomes, in a wide-ranging selection of visuals dating from Ancient Greece to the present day. More than 300 images include Roman stone mosaics, illustrated Norse myths, Edo-period woodblock prints and living tree installations, each lavishly reproduced. Curated by an international panel of botanists, naturalists, art historians and other experts, the images expand the definition of botanical art, together forming a vibrant, vital homage to the natural world. About Tony Kirkham Tony Kirkham is a renowned British arboriculturist and tree expert, best known for his lifelong dedication to the care, study, and preservation of trees. He served as the Head of Arboretum, Gardens, and Horticultural Services at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where he played a pivotal role in maintaining one of the world's most diverse tree collections. Over his distinguished career, Kirkham became an authoritative figure in tree health, conservation, and education, helping to shape public understanding of trees' importance to ecosystems and human culture. This week's guest is multi-media artist Hanna Varga. Hanna incorporates the natural world into her work and her current projects involve foraging for fibres she turns into both useful and beautiful items. The conversation began with Hanna talking about her work past and present and developed into a really important conversation about the value of items at their more than fiscal level. Dr Ian Bedford's Bug of the Week: Cabbage Whiteflies About Hanna's ‘Say It With Knots' Project “Taking as a point of departure an idea that prompted me to embark on a journey dedicated to explore knotted ropes and their agency to convey meaning. What utterly captivated my imagination I first encountered in an essay by Italo Calvino titled Say it with Knots (originally published in 1984). In it he describes an exhibition about knot making and his impressions of the artefacts there as a medium for communication. 40 years later, in 2024, I envision a small travelling solo exhibition to reanimate this ancient tactile craft in order to tell stories of a particular geographical location.  I endeavour to create an engaging and urgent body of work in response to our current ecological times. I aim to awaken curiosity and evoke questions about interconnectedness. I'm planning to make a new series of sculptural forms using wild foraged plant fibres. I choose to source my own art materials from the local environment to minimise my carbon footprint. The process of both gathering and making cordage is beautiful, versatile and yields evocative results. The metaphors in language can offer insight into the diverse range of symbols, historical and cultural associations with strings and knots; the important role rope making technologies played in the development of civilisations.  I wish to juxtapose this with the natural history of the landscape where the raw materials come from. I will work on the coast of the Scottish Highlands where a long history of shipping and fishing trades have been present. Natural and human history will intertwine in the resulting artworks.”  I wish to transport my audience in time - back to the beginning, where it all started by twisting together vegetal fibres into a piece of string. Also, looking ahead into the future, an invitation to imagine new possibilities in tactile dimensions in our increasingly digitised age.  How will we continue making meaning with our hands? How can we create in reciprocity with the more-than-human world around us? An accidental invention which revolutionised plant collecting has inspired an artwork from Mat Collishaw, created in collaboration with video artists based in Ukraine, which is being premiered in a gallery at Kew Gardens. The nine minute video, accompanied by music by Samuel Barber's Adagio for strings, draws on the discovery in 1829 that a Wardian case could allow plants to grow under airtight glass. And the way art and music respond to environmental concerns is at the heart of this Free Thinking conversation hosted by Jade Munslow Ong. Jimmy López Bellido has written a symphony inspired by photographs of a changing landscape, Sarah Casey's drawings look at the impact of ice melting in glaciers and New Generation Thinker Vid Simoniti has written a book exploring the political ambitions of contemporary art in the early twenty-first century. He talks about the work of Alberta Whittle, Olafur Eliasson, El Anatsui, Maurice Mbikayi, Margaret Wertheim and Christine Wertheim. Producer in Salford: Nick Holmes Petrichor, a new exhibition of work by Mat Collishaw runs from 20 October 2023- 7 April 2024 at the Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art, Kew Gardens. Sarah Casey is Director of the School of Art in Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts and has worked on The Emergency project which uses drawing to examine artefacts emerging from alpine glaciers as a result of climate change and ice melting. She also convenes a group studying rocky environments and geology. From 26-28th October ‘Rocky Futures', an art exhibition in the form of three live video events streamed from destinations across the globe on the theme of geology, mobilities and the climate emergency will be available online at https://wp.lancs.ac.uk/rocky-climates/rocky-futures/ Vid Simoniti's book is called Artists Remake the World: A Contemporary Art Manifesto. As we move toward October, the first a few intermittent episodes reminding us of the artistry behind our plant and garden love, the artistry underpinning mother nature herself. This week we're in conversation with artist Libby Ellis – photographer who sees the fullness of creation in the many faces of the flowers who delight us. Libby Ellis is a fine art photographer based on the island now known as Martha's Vineyard homeland of the Wampanoag people and nation who named the beautiful island Noepe. Monochromoatic and often single focused Ellis' work lands in my heart in a similar way as a Georgia O'Keeffe painting or a Dorothea Lange portrait – all of them capturing the essence of one subject while contributing insight into the workings of life itself – nature, plus the workings of humanity and its perceptions. In the case of Libby Ellis – the focal point include everyday flowers from Cosmos to musk roses, hibiscus to magnolia. And her work has been featured from various locations on Martha's Vineyard including the Featherstone Center for the Arts and the Carnegie Museum to London's Saatchi Gallery for the Royal Horticultural Society's 2022 Botanical Art and Photography exhibit, from the Harvard Divinity School to large scale projection against a high rise building in Denver, CO. After studying in Paris, René botanized in Tunisia and Algeria in North Africa. His Masterwork, Flora Atlantica, included 300 new genera. René conducted a fascinating experiment with the sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica) by seeing how it would react to a carriage ride through Paris. He discovered that the plant grew accustomed to riding in the carriage after initially closing its leaves and wilting the first few times it took a ride. René is remembered in the name of Desfontainia spinosa or the Chilean holly, native to Costa Rica, Chile, and Argentina. The Chilean holly is a beautiful ornamental, hardy to −5 °C (23 °F), but requires winter protection.   1863 Birth of Okakura Kakuzō ("Oh-ka- koo-rah Ka-coo-zoh") (books by this author), Japanese author, scholar, and supporter of the arts. In The Book of Tea, he wrote, In joy or sadness, flowers are our constant friends.   1869 Birth of Samuel Graveson, a Quaker printer, publisher, philatelist, and author who lived in Hertford, England.  In his book, My Villa Garden (1915), he wrote, What another book of gardening!  Are not our bookshelves already overburdened with literature on the subject?   1898 On this day, a court case involving the sale of an orchid and breach of warranty was settled in favor of the plaintiff. In Ashworth vs. Wells, the plaintiff bought a white orchid with a warranty. It was a one-of-a-kind Cattleya Acklandiae alba ("kat-lee-ya ack-land-ee-aye AL-bah"), a white orchid - only to discover two years later when it bloomed that it was just a common purple orchid. The plaintiff was awarded fifty pounds - the price paid for the imposter white orchid.   Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation Rosie Sanders' Flowers by Rosie Sanders This book came out late in 2017, and the subtitle is A Celebration of Botanical Art. Rosie's work is featured in this book of botanical paintings that will take your breath away with their richness, drama, and sensuality. This book beautifully showcases eighty of Rosie's paintings which celebrate some of our favorite flowers: tulips, orchids, roses, irises, anemones, and amaryllis, just to name a few. If you didn't get flowers for Valentine's Day, consider grabbing a copy of Rosie's book! Rosie also has a book that focuses specifically on Roses. You can get a copy of Rosie Sanders' Flowers by Rosie Sanders and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for $22.   Today's Botanic Spark 2010 On this day, Georgia botanist Mincy Moffett Jr. staged a unique Valentine's Day for a rare dwarf sumac species known as Michaux's Sumac native to Georgia's Lower Broad River Wildlife Management Area. Mincy's plan was an ingenious one. He not only increased public awareness around the endangered plant, but he also helped save a species that desperately needed human-engineered botanical intervention for survival. In 2010, Michaux's Sumac was found in two small areas of Georgia - one population was made up of just five male plants, while the other community was all female. Additionally, the male and female Michaux Sumac plants were separated by seventy miles of dense forest. By not growing near each other, the plants could not reproduce with insect pollination and were forced to reproduce asexually, which resulted in reduced genetic diversity. Thanks to Mincy's romantic intervention, female plants were planted near the male plants. Mincy told a local reporter, Let's hope it turns into a torrid romance. Now, a decade later, it appears that Mincy's matchmaking was a success as the combined Michaux's Sumac community continues to thrive.   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

She traveled the world, researching the visual history of plant depiction, as well as collecting specimens for 'Dispersal', a series of photographs, portraits, exploring the form and function of seed dispersal. In our conversation, we delve deeper into the world of seeds and Anna's creative journey, exploring them through photography.'The reason for a flower is the fruit and the seed. A flower has evolved its form and its scent, its colours to attract pollinators, to produce a seed. And the seeds are really the future of the plant. The seeds are the whole purpose of a plant.'Her work has exhibited internationally, at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in London, the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard university and the University of California Botanical Gardens at Berkeley, as well as gardens in Amsterdam, Italy, Gibraltar, Sydney, and New York city. In 2018, the Royal Botanic gardens Kew commissioned a series of seed portraits to be permanently displayed alongside living plants in the Temperate House, the largest Victorian glasshouse in the world. Her first book, Botanical Art from the Golden Age of Scientific Discovery (University of Chicago Press, 2016) examines the art and science of plant biology in 19th century wall charts. In this episode, I talk about my new studio and how working in isolation affects our sense of time. I consider ideas of time and how as painters we have to think about space and time in ways that many might not. I touch on Hockney, but of course one cannot forget the Cubists and early Scandinavian painters who also played with space-time. I am no expert and am merely skirting around a subject that has only just begun to grab my attention as I delve further into blue and what it means in terms of metaphysical longing. I feel another trip to the library coming on!I then bring you the sounds of Zurich, St. Gallen and the Swiss Alps where I travelled to this summer in my search for wild Gentians. The climb through the mountains was pretty tough as I was recovering from an illness, but it was utterly amazing. The beauty of the Swiss Alps is unrivaled and whilst being in this sublime environment I felt I was able to connect with true 'Strum und Drang' and the kindred souls who first begun the European Romantic Movement, such as Novalis and Goethe. Sturm und Drang, (German: “Storm and Stress”), was a proto-Romantic movement which appeared in German literature in the late 18th Century. It exalted nature, feeling, and human individualism. Towards the end of the 18th Century this morphed into the more commonly known 'Romantic Movement', which continued to emphasize intense emotions as an authentic source of aesthetic experience. Especially those that could be experienced when confronting the sublimity, spontaneity, and beauty found in nature. After Switzerland, I moved studio in Andalucia before travelling on to Dublin, Ireland to see painter Elaine Moore Mackey. The soundscape, therefore, takes you from Switzerland to Spain and then on to Dublin and then finally to Kildare where I am joined with botanical painter Shevaun Doherty in our search for Blue Irish Linen and Romantic ruined castles. As always, I have mashed up and blended the sounds of places so you don't really know where you are. You are just somewhere in time and place.IMAGE: Prototype work for Blue Flower: Gentian by Jessica R. Shepherd. Oil on canvas.

This week, I am joined by painter Jenny Coker who talks about her work and how she works with different papers and paints from her studio in the North Island of New Zealand. This interview was recorded back in July 2018 just before everything went a bit nuts on the run-up to Blue Flower: The Antipodes so apologies for it taking so long to publish. Born in New Zealand Jenny is well known for her beautiful, sensual paintings of plants and flowers in watercolour and for her more traditional work in oils where she works using the time-consuming Flemish technique. The resurgence of classical realism appealed greatly and a high point of her art journey was a short course on oil portraiture at the Florence Academy of Art in 2016.Jenny's large scale irises took her over in 2018, culminating in her beautiful series called 'Eros'. Often asked which medium is her favourite, she moves with ease between both watercolour and oil. Jenny travels extensively all over the world and is looking to visit Europe again in 2020. She has a love of languages and is always enthusiastic about making new friends and sharing her skills. You can follow Jenny on Instagram. For the last few minutes of this podcast, we are taken to Auckland, New Zealand where I recorded a Tui bird singing in Sandra Morris' garden. Seemed apt with the New Zealand theme. IMAGE: Jenny Coker © Watercolour on paper.

Jess Shepherd is a botanical painter. When she paints plants she tries to become them. There is a great deal of observation involved even before her brushes touch the paper. Jess believes that a good picture is made using not only sight, but also touch, sound, smell and movement. One has to be aware of all of these elements in order to portray the plant well and describe the space that the plant is growing into, both over and underground. Jess initially trained in botany before committing herself fully to painting so that she would understand the processes of plants more comprehensively. Equipped with this scientific knowledge, Jess is now testing new approaches to her artwork to push the capacity for botanical illustration to bring greater awareness of plants and our interaction with them. Through her art, Jess hopes to inspire people to think beyond their experience whilst enriching our current perceptions of botanical illustration, its applications and how it sits within the larger scope of the visual arts.
