Send us a textIn this captivating first installment of our two-part conversation, Ian shares his remarkable coming-of-age story: from his teenage years in South London's vibrant soul scene of the 1970s to living in New York from 1980 to 1983, concluding as he departs for Ibiza in 1984.Ian St Paul stands as a genuine pioneer of London's underground music scene. Raised on the Roundshaw Estate in South London, he discovered soul records at age 13, igniting a lifelong passion for music. He quickly became a fixture at iconic London soul venues like Crackers and the Lacy Lady, absorbing the vibrant club culture of the era. At just 15, Ian embarked on an extraordinary journey to New York City with friend Paul Oakenfold, immersing himself in the legendary club scene that would later profoundly influence UK dance music. Upon returning to London, he founded "Candy Box," a youth club that hosted early performances by then-unknown DJs including Giles Peterson and Oakenfold. Ian's influence expanded when he moved to Ibiza in 1984, diving deep into the island's emerging club culture alongside his DJ cousin Trevor Fung. His pivotal moment came in 1987 when Oakenfold visited him in Ibiza with fellow DJs; Ian introduced them to the island's revolutionary party scene, taking them to Amnesia and exposing them to the nascent ecstasy culture. In 1988, Ian returned to London where he promoted the legendary Acid House nights Future and Spectrum—events that kickstarted the UK's acid house revolution. His journey continued into the 90s when he relocated to Goa, India, where he managed trance music pioneers Juno Reactor.Support the showhttps://www.youtube.com/@ControlledWeirdnesshttps://open.spotify.com/artist/20nC7cQni8ZrvRC2REZjOIhttps://www.instagram.com/controlledweirdness/https://controlledweirdness.bandcamp.com/Theme song is Controlled Weirdness - Drifting in the Streetshttps://open.spotify.com/track/7GJfmYy4RjMyLIg9nffuktHosted from a South London tower block by Neil Keating aka Controlled Weirdness. Neil is a veteran producer and DJ and has been at the front line of all aspects of club and sound system culture since the mid 80's when he first began to go to nightclubs, gigs, and illegal parties. His musical CV includes playing everywhere from plush clubs to dirty warehouses as well as mixing tunes on a variety of iconic London pirate radio stations. He has released music on numerous underground record labels and was responsible for promoting and playing at a series of legendary early raves in the USA at the start of the 90's. Welcome to this seven part, end of year series - new episodes are released each weekday between Dec 13-21. Inspired by the Black radical tradition of the harmony between the lyrical and visual. I am joined by friends (artists, dancers, musicians) to explore the musical influences that inspire their work. We also look to the people, real and imagined, familial and ancestral who guide them.Tyrone is a concept driven artist whose skills originate from Jazz and Hip-Hop Theatre. Working as a performer across dance and music, his practice has grown to become a mixture of Krump, contemporary dance, visual art & Jazz music. He performs in Julian Knxx's latest exhibition Chorus in Rememory of Flight, currently running at the Barbican. "There's already a musical language that is embedded in the ideas of that work because of the way Julian is working with choirs, and then I can try and translate that into movement. I have a good relationship with Julian and there's a lot of trust. So in some ways, we've established a chorus."He recently released his debut LP, S!ck - and was called ”one to watch" by Giles Peterson this year. Commissions include a full length theatre work for the Barbican 'An Earnest Life', a duet for Dance Umbrella, Beyond Words & an international Solo work for Hayley Matthews Ensemble. IT'S THE JAZZ SPECIAL!This week we take some time to explore the incredible rise of UK Jazz over the last few years with celebrated music writer and academic Caspar Melville. UK Jazz has become one of the most vibrant and exciting genres around with new festivals like We Out Here showcasing a myriad of emerging talent, the likes of Emma Jean Thackray, Kokoroko and Ezra Collective all crossing over into the mainstream thanks to undying support from Giles Peterson, 6 Music, Jazz FM and even our own Deb Grant. How then has what was once seen as a niche style become so wildly successful? Following the DIY movements of dance and indie which dominated the last couple of decades the last thing many expected to see was the resurgence of a craft that takes so much skill and dedication? Casper Melville takes the time for an in depth discussion about how we got here and where music might go next. Whether you are a jazz aficionado or a complete novice it's a fascinating story for any music fan. Before all that Eamon gets the best present a boy could wish for and Deb shares some disturbing jams from her childhood. You can buy Caspar Melvilles brilliant book on club culture here:https://www.amazon.co.uk/kindle-dbs/entity/author/B082FJF9HR?_encoding=UTF8&node=266239&offset=0&pageSize=12&searchAlias=stripbooks&sort=author-sidecar-rank&page=1&langFilter=default#formatSelectorHeaderGet in touch and tell us what you think. Nicky Holloway's connection with music began as soon as he was born. Growing up on a boat and witnessing bands such as Pink Floyd playing live, Nicky got into DJing and started his own events in 1985 at The Royal Oak with Giles Peterson and Pete Tong as his residents before they became super DJs. Nicky was renowned for his events in quirky venues such as the natural history museum, London zoo to name just a few. Nicky talks about his experiences in Ibiza with Danny Rampling and Paul Oakenfold and playing at venues such as Cafe del Mar before Ibiza became popular. Hanging out with Bono from U2, Kylie Minogue at the Milk Bar, Nicky was the first event promoter to bring Todd Terry and David Morales to the UK. Nicky was always one step ahead of the game. Hear how he was able to put on a surprise show with Sister Sledge whilst they were touring in the UK. Irvine Walsh asked Nicky Holloway, Paul Oakenfold and Danny Rampling to be part of a film about Ibiza - how did it all go so wrong?

Rooted firmly in r&b and soul, 2018 sees a more down tempo side of Charli’s productions; with the inception of her neo-soul collective ‘Milk & Honey’ & collaborations with some of Bristol’s finest r&b artists, it’s time to strip back to her roots delivering nothing but organic, soulful expression. Aaliyah Esprit Music Aaliyah Esprit is a singer who’s versed in soul-jazz legends as much as the hip-hop beatmakers who’ve flipped their records. Her music finds a sweet spot between those two worlds. Working with producers melding hard-edged production with a melodic hue, her vocals add a timeless, soulful quality. Based in Bristol, she’s part of the Cosmic Soul Collective, but has also picked up the attention of Brownswoods own, Giles Peterson who has signed her up for his Further Bubblers scheme. The future is looking bright for young Aaliyah. Indira May https://soundcloud.com/indie-may Keeping it organic and fresh, Indira is an upcoming singer/songwriter from Brighton. Having worked with Hip Hop artists such as Nomad and Eskimoe, expect Jazz influenced Rhythm & Blues with an experimental twist. Keep your eyes peeled for the launch of her EP and latest debut video in the next few months. Really excited to hear her unique voice and style + Support from... LEKTRK is the trio project of Melbourne residents Michael Clark, Kristian Piccoli, and Tim Trappett . Following various excellent singles released on Turnstyle Digital and various remixes they first garnished attention after winning the Beatport Remix competition for Tensnake’s “feel of love”. The first LEKTRK release appeared on Turnstyle Digital in 2013. In 2016, having built up a repertoire of unsigned material and DJ ready remixes, they begun to write their first album. The LEKTRK sound is reminiscent of Classic deep house while borrowing from minimal and tech influences. They make the music that they would want to play as DJs, reflecting in their sets and their production style. This ethos creates the energy heard in their work and is what keeps the crowd dancing. Michael came from Minimal/tech group Liminalism in London in 2007/2008 before returning to Melbourne in 2009. After a few years of DJing around Melbourne, the Producing bug once again took hold of him. DJ Intalink is a house producer, Remix artist, and DJ with over 15 years of experience and has held residencies at various bars around Melbourne including the Grand Hotel in Richmond. DJ Rellik is an established hip-hop producer who has produced over 100 albums and collaborated with Hip Hop royalty such as Wu Tang Clan, the Beat nuts, Obie Trice The Alkaholiks, and Ultra Magnetic Mcs, to name a few. He currently runs an Independent Record Label (Turnstyle Records) and operates a recording studio in South East of Melbourne. A Hip Hop Producer by trade, DJ Rellik took out top honors as Victoria’s best Scratch Turntablist in the 2014 DMC Championships and Vice Champion DMC 2015. Together with Michael Clark, Dj Rellik produces a podcast, Featuring mixed dj sets covering all genres of electronic and Hip Hop Music. A few years on, the guys had achieved all they wanted to with their techno influenced “DigitalNightmare” release, and was ready to move into more deeper and club-inspired musical avenues. So LEKTRK became their main project. Their combined production experience means that they are able to finish well-rounded tracks off in a matter of days, constantly building a repertoire of Classic Dancefloor hits and mellow soundscapes The process is well on its way already. The dance world has its eyes on LEKTRK. The likes of Sander Van Doorn, Giles Peterson, Laurent Garnier, Gerd Janson, Michael Canitrot (Defected), Gorgon City, Ten Ven, have showed them love // featured their tracks.

To be able to call Giles Peterson a fan is not a privilege shared by many. Howerver Indonesia's DJ Dea or Dea Barandana as he is known is one such artist who can add his name to the list. His unique blend of island disco, percussive dancefloor music, house and electronics makes him a particularly pleasant listen amidst the summer months. His sets are charismatic, energetic and engaging. In the coming months he is set to appear at Brilliant Corners, Love International, Ibiza and Worldwide Festival.

This is the latest episode of the syndicated FuseBox Radio Broadcast with DJ Fusion & Jon Judah for the weeks of June 20, 2012 with some new and classic Hip-Hop & Soul Music, news and commentary. Our commentary this week touched base on a Google's policy analyst's commentary about countries making more requests than ever for takedowns of political material from all over the world, author Alice Walker's unique stand against the nation of Israel's political actions against the Palestinians, the passing of author Erica Kennedy and actress Yvette Wilson (R.I.P.), the state of Rhode Island decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana, the FuseBox Radio Broadcast's travels in Toronto, Canada during NXNE (North By Northeast), an ultimate grudge holding scenario which lead to a person being killed for a beef from 50 years ago, when trying out a new food - calamari to be exact - goes REALLY wrong on a weirdo science fiction twist and some other diverse topics here and there. There is brand new Black Agenda Report News mini-segment on this week's episode. The Terrace Podcast Welcomes this weeks guest : Yousef with a very groovy set recorded live from Space Ibiza in the Carl Cox (Revolution Party) The new decade sees Yousef consolidating his status as an international DJ, Producer, Club Promoter and Music aficionado with ever greater impact. Running one of Europe's premier clubnights co-exists alongside manning a record label of the same name, whilst his reputation as a DJ grows with increasing stature and a constantly escalating global calendar. His productions continue to leave an indelible imprint on the world; the release of second artist album ‘Indigo Child', the follow-up to 2009's impressive LP ‘A Collection of scars and situations', is scheduled for later on in 2011. A hugely expansive collection much like its predecessor, it marks a return to Circus Recordings after Yousef took a twelve month sabbatical to work exclusively with a select band of record labels, including Saved, Cocoon, Harthouse, and Monique Musique. The return will be kick-started with the release of one 8 track EPs entitled ‘Yousef's Circus Reworks'. The focus is simple; transformations of several productions with the Circus dancefloor specifically in mind, Jamie T, Fourtet, Giles Peterson, Moby and Sven Vath among the producers contributing material for Yousef to re-jig alongside his own peerless ‘Come Home'. Each track represents a certain time of the night or certain room; painting a personal musical projection of what Circus means to Yousef and an ideological snapshot of the clubnight's musical DNA. The event is quite the beast. Now in its ninth year, it's quickly moved from being the best night in Liverpool to one of the most talked about and well respected soirees on the continent, the flagship for the refurbished and Funktion One equipped Masque. The high profile nature has seen shows with Planet E, Bedrock, Meganite and Teutonic techno institution Cocoon, not to mention a superlative collaboration with the BBC for the 500th Essential Mix. Loco dice, Pete Tong Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Sven Vath, Ricardo Vilalobos, Laurent Garnier, Luciano, Carl Craig, Adam Beyer, John Digweed, Davide Squillace, Raresh, Dennis Ferrer, Heidi, Nic Fanciulli, Tim Green and countless others have all played for Yousef and his party in the last 12 months. Many more are slanted for future shows in 2011 and beyond as it nears an unprecedented ten years of rave carnage. And Yousef continues to push further ground as a DJ. 2011 will see his second year as one of the residents at Carl Cox presents... at Space, arguably the internationally renowned nightclub's finest party of the season. A recent tour of South America saw a consolidation of his status as one of the premier foreign DJs for the continent (a debut at Warung Beach a particular highlight), and he remains a huge draw from the sun kissed shores of Melbourne to Miami to the sweat soaked basements of Manchester and Munich. One thing's for sure; Yousef will continue to leave a huge personal footprint upon electronic music both behind the scenes and behind the decks of the world's finest clubs, whilst creating the musical soundtracks that pulsate through their clubber's ears. He simply knows no other w www.theterracepodcast.com
