Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by grime great and Roll Deep affiliate MANGA SAINT HILARE!A lovely chat with a grime star who shows both confidence and humility at the same time, in what seems like equal amounts. A quick scan through his videos and IG will reveal that he has the skills to back it all up, and has years in the game too, as well as stories from the old days of Roll Deep and the initiation of the grime scene. Really cool stuff, going in on such topics as how it feels releasing a new album, performing and stage craft as a new parent, rhythms of life, peopke coming to shows for him and not just the music, songwriting, how grime does well in the room, energy, and being part of a self-appointed Mt. Rushmore of grime! Really fun and interesting, worthy of a listen from the most ardent grime listener to the most "what are you talking about" person. Welcome to Episode 58 of TheStockroom Podcast featuring Grime OG and a friend of the show Manga St Hilare. We spoke to Manga about his journey into Grime and how he ended up joining Roll Deep and how grime and the culture surrounding it influenced his sound and his sense of fashion as well as some funny stories along the way! We also delved into some of the shoes that stood out to him growing up and how he got into building his trainer collection. Community is central to grime and you can see that through their boiler room sets and live shows. Off the back of this idea of community and engagement, we discussed the importance of relatable and thoughtful merch when it comes to artists and why so many artists miss the mark. This episode promises laughs, knowledge and so much more, so be sure to interact with us in the comments! "Vocals go hand in hand with the grime I know." Ahead of his appearance at London's Waterworks Festival, the UK artist discusses the significance of MCs, working with Skrillex and more. Marc Veira, AKA Flowdan, sees MCs as the "hub of all the vibes." Growing up in East London's rich dancehall and reggae scene, he developed a singular view of music that blossomed into a career as a well-known MC and cofounder of the grime collective Roll Deep. Alongside a string of successful EPs and collaborations come on labels like Hyperdub and Tru Thoughts, he recently earned widespread plaudits for his collaboration with Skrillex and Fred Again…. on their anthem, "Rumble," which came out last year. In this RA Exchange with DJ and radio host Tash LC, Veira discusses how he got to this point, starting from his time at home and his mother's passion for sound system culture. "The MC being the hub of all the vibes—I heard that in sound system culture," he says. He believes there still isn't enough credit afforded to vocalists in live performances more generally. "The grime I know, the garage I know, the drum & bass I know—vocals go hand in hand with all of that. And at festivals, massive artists headlining shows have no mention of their vocalists. That's not what the music is." Veira also unpacks his love for working with other people, his mentorship of up-and-coming producers and using Flowdan as the character behind which he hides his natural shyness on stage. To hear more about his creative process and trajectory, listen to the episode in full.

They've known each other their whole lives, and they wonder who they'll turn out to be. In a moment of disclosure, Major tells his friends he wants to be a poet, astonishing them, and himself too it seems. In friendship and ribbing, in desire and teasing, this poem wonders who a person is, and what it means to hope.Major Jackson is the author of five books of poetry, including The Absurd Man (2020), Roll Deep (2015), Holding Company (2010), Hoops (2006) and Leaving Saturn (2002), which won the Cave Canem Poetry Prize for a first book of poems. Award-winning podcaster and spoken word artist George the Poet comes to the BBC’s own Radio Theatre for a one-off live show exploring what rap can teach us about education. For George, rap was always a vehicle for knowledge. But it isn’t always taken seriously by an establishment that often sees it as unconstructive. Rap was an essential part of George’s own development as a poet, and studying Sociology at Cambridge University allowed him to look more closely at what rap can do for marginalised communities. This show charts George’s own story of education – his evolution from Grime MC to Cambridge student to spoken word artist – and pays homage to the rap music that shaped him and his peers. George brings a number of friends to the stage to explore what rap can teach us about education. DJ Target is a 1Xtra DJ and a founding member of UK Grime collective Roll Deep. In his book Grime Kids he charts the creation of the groundbreaking music genre that gave voice to a generation. Neuroscientist Dr Becky Inkster and psychiatrist Dr Akeem Sule are co-founders of Hip Hop Psych. Hip Hop Psych dissects hip hop lyrics to analyse the mechanisms of mental health problems, signals which are sometimes overlooked because of their mode of communication. Temi Mwale has been committed to the fight against youth violence since her childhood friend Marvin Henry was murdered. At 17, Temi founded the 4Front Project, a grassroots organisation based in the estate she grew up in, which delivers specialist programmes that support personal development, legal empowerment and social action across vulnerable communities. Holly Branson joined the Virgin Group as an active member of the Leadership team in 2008, after achieving medical and physiology degrees from University College London and realising her dream of working as a doctor. She is Chair of Virgin Unite, a Founder and trustee of education charity Big Change and Co-Chair of WE Day UK. Sonita Alleyne OBE is the new Master of Jesus College, Cambridge. She is the first woman to be the Master of Jesus College and the first black person to lead any Oxbridge college. Sonita is the co-founder and former CEO of media production company Somethin’ Else. Alleyne’s board roles have included the National Employment Panel and the London Skills and Employment Board, chair of the Radio Sector Skills Council and non-executive director of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Swindle Who ? Musicalement votre. Deepak Shukla is the founder and CEO of Pearl Lemon - an award-winning SEO agency that outranks bigger, better-funded competitors. He’s a leader in helping people grow their businesses and cultivate online reputations, and his work has been featured in TedX talks, as well as on SEMRush, the Huffington Post, UpWork, and Woorank. However, his journey to get there will surprise you - and includes the British equivalent of an Ivy League education, time spent as a tax consultant at Deloitte, pursuing a career as a rapper that led to him opening for legendary London rap crew Roll Deep, and creating tutoring companies and online education marketplaces. Today, Deepak joins the podcast to dive deep into meaningful SEO strategies that won’t get you penalized by Google, the power of influencer marketing, how to make it easier than ever for your best possible clients to find you - no matter what industry you’re in. In this podcast interview, you’ll learn: How Deepak’s passion for music led to one of his first companies - and how he built a recording studio with over 200 clients nationwide in his mom's house on a shoestring budget. What Deepak did to build his first business that he didn’t realize was teaching him everything he needed to know about search engines, building audiences, and connecting with prospects. The major issues that businesses struggle with as they try to grow online - and how to become an expert, drive traffic, and attract your most ideal clients using a variety of different content strategies. Why producing video content is now more important than ever - and why unpretentious, spontaneous video connects so well with people. What you can do as a local business to improve your search engine rankings - and how to use data to refine and improve your processes.   You can visit Deepak here. Mixpak FM 061 is brought to you by Glasgow producer, Inkke. With only one official release under his belt - 'L.O.K' for Ninja Tune's Grime 2.0 compilation - Inkke has already made a name for himself as part of the current instrumental grime 'renaissance' in the UK. Whether he's channeling the ghost of Eski, creating a head-turning war dub, or refixing Nelly, Inkke is constantly pushing the genre's hyperactive syncopation to new and experimental places. With both an EP for Local Action and a beat tape (as in cassette) for Astral Black due early next year, he'll be a grime producer to watch for in 2014. His Mixpak FM is an interesting ride through what seems to be influences from the UK and international underground - from archive Roll Deep to new grime contemporaries Logos and Strict Face, afrobeats to RnB refixes, and of course many of his own unreleased productions.
