The murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson revealed two horrific aspects of American life: A healthcare executive was shot dead, and because he was a healthcare executive, people cheered. Why? Because many feel our health system is broken. Tonight, Dr. Phil explores how a fractured health care system has affected American lives. Angela says after her husband was diagnosed with Stage 4 stomach cancer, their health insurance company refused to cover a necessary procedure to save his life. Kay was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 35, and she never imagined she'd spend 10 years trying to get health insurance to approve needed treatments. Brigham Buhler worked a pharmacy rep for Ely Lilly, but left the industry when he could see how companies prioritized profits over patient access to life savings medications. He now has his own healthcare company, Ways2Well, focusing on prevention. Dr. Bill Hennessey worked as a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician for years, dealing with frustrated patients who were given delays and denials from health insurance companies. He left to create his own company, Careguide, to help others navigate the healthcare system. In this episode we tackle several hot-button healthcare topics including how insurance companies often shift blame to doctors (and avoid accountability) for rising healthcare costs and dive into the complexities of physician compensation. We also take a deep dive into the ethics of humor in healthcare, reflecting on a viral TikTok video that generated both praise and criticism. Takeaways: Insurance companies often shift blame to doctors for rising healthcare costs to avoid scrutiny of their own profit-driven practices. The phrase "Remember that patient you saw?" strikes fear into physicians, as it often signals potential mistakes or complications. Humor in healthcare can be a powerful tool, but it also comes with ethical considerations that doctors must navigate carefully. Public perception of doctors is shaped by narratives from the healthcare industry, which often misrepresents physician compensation and responsibilities. Physician content creators face unique challenges, balancing humor with sensitivity while addressing serious healthcare issues. — To Get Tickets to Wife & Death: You can visit Glaucomflecken.com/live We want to hear YOUR stories (and medical puns)! He explains the underperformance of gold mining stocks and touches on labor costs in Australia. Peter also critiques current market sentiments, especially around Bitcoin, arguing against Michael Saylor's extreme advocacy and highlighting the potential risks of institutional investments in Bitcoin. Schiff then shifts gears to politics, offering a critical analysis of Donald Trump's economic policies, including misleading claims about inflation and tariffs. He also examines Trump's stance on entitlements and his approach to immigration reform. Concluding with poignant contrasts between the Daniel Penny and Luigi Mangione cases, Peter offers a compelling narrative on the current socio-political climate.

In this week's recap, global markets experienced mostly positive trends across the board. In 2024, health insurance policies were updated to include new exclusions and expenses not covered, notably citing “treatment of an injury or sickness due to war, declared or undeclared, riot, or insurrection.” Oil prices rallied to their highest in two months on Friday after a fuel tanker was struck near Yemen, highlighting once again the geopolitical risks to global crude supplies. A lot of employers and health insurers are now offering wellbeing apps and portals. They're obviously hoping that giving people tools to help them manage their health conditions and nudge them toward healthy behaviors will reduce health care costs. I recently checked out the wellbeing app offered by my own health insurance company. I actually think that some of the well-meaning but poorly-conceived prompts could be doing more harm than good. To be fair, figuring out how to nudge people to adopt healthier habits is a hard nut to crack. In this episode, I share five ideas on how we can design behavioral interventions that are more effective as well as more inclusive, accessible, and sustainable. I also have an opportunity for you to see these principles in action. Key Takeaways People not only need to believe that what you're asking them to do will benefit them, they also need to feel confident that they can actually do it. People cannot pay attention to everything. Therefore, you need to help them pay attention to the right things. Don't just discourage the negative; promote positive behaviors. All-or-nothing approaches (or mindsets) rarely lead to long-term change. We tend to over-estimate the impact of our most extreme behaviors. In fact, it is your most typical behavior that determines your results. Focus on those. Vidcast: https://youtu.be/-DYHjyQ5S3g A full 78% of US hospitals and healthcare systems complain that their relationships with commercial health insurers are tanking. The chief culprit: mandatory pre-authorizations for surgery, imaging, lab testing, and pharmaceuticals. Ninety-five percent of hospitals resent wasting ever-increasing time and money dealing with these pre-auths. Why a waste? Nearly two-thirds of pre-auth denials are overturned. Another pet peeve: denials of payment for hospital services half of which are eventually overturned. Bottom line: we need a better system for maintaining quality without wasting so much tine and effort. https://medcitynews.com/2022/11/aha-78-of-hospitals-say-experience-with-commercial-insurers-is-worsening/ #preauthorizations #healthinsurance #hospital #denials #claims

Before having children, and doing the work that I do now, I spent ten years working within the health insurance industry. I sat in on a lot meetings that (accidentally) shared what I believe to be the truth about our healthcare system - namely, that it doesn't really create health. Above all, it's a really big business. I focus this episode mainly on the myth of preventive care, because it's of particular relevance to pregnancy and prenatal care. In part 1 of our series on Digital Innovation in Healthcare In today's episode, we're discussing why now is the moment for healthcare to look at patient journeys through fresh eyes. Joined by Tom Donnelly, Ph.D., who has a background in psychology and leads the MedTech group at Branding Science, we look at how digital interventions can lead to better health outcomes and other ways technology can improve the patient experience. In This Episode: [01:50] Introducing Tom, what he's been focusing on these days, and what drives him. [03:30] Patient journeys and how that relates to the work that Tom has been doing. [04:42] How healthcare companies should be thinking about patient journeys. [11:15] Shifts in patient journeys related to COVID. [18:25] Examining consumer expectations around healthcare and how they relate to consumer habits. [22:07] The Stupid Dumb Smart Genius Framework and Tom's own journey with healthcare tools. [32:30] Focusing more on better outcomes and removing friction with technology. [33:35] Key experience strategy takeaways. Key Takeaways: Covid has accelerated the availability of home healthcare, but the industry has to look at that experience in its new context, and get a full understanding of the experience, if they want it to work. Observational research is a powerful way to understand how people and environments interact with med-tech in their real lives. Whether you're examining the patient or customer journey, it's essential to step back and think about journeys in an integrated and holistic way instead of just moment to moment. Genius solutions will help people take healthcare actions by using data to make the experience meaningful and help get us all in a better place. Bio: Tom Donnelly, PhD Tom leads the MedTech group at Branding Science where he provides marketing research consultation and human factors using approaches informed by social science. He also leads their Inclusion Team in an effort to help people feel they belong and are included, as well as to help the industry become more diverse.
