Why is proper composting so important to a farm’s success, and how can you make sure you have the right compost for the best outcomes? Today we’re happy to host Grant and Kate Estrade of Laughing Buddha Nursery in Metairie, Louisiana. In 2003, Grant started Laughing Buddha Nursery out of a simple desire to be his own boss and run a retail shop that met a community need - the then fledgling but growing demand for organic gardening supplies. After Katrina struck the area in 2005, people were concerned about the quality and potential contaminants in their backyard soil. In response, Grant began composting and mixing organic soil blends to supply healthy, lead-free, and nutrient-rich soil products for customers’ gardens. In 2010, Kate joined when she met Grant at Laughing Buddha. Her parents always grew a large vegetable garden and composted and as a teenager she spent summers working at a local garden center. She never imagined going into gardening or agriculture professionally, but we know how these things can work out! Tune in to hear all of their integral and transformative composting tips! You’ll hear: How Kate and Grant got started with Laughing Buddha Nursery 1:50 How their store operates 6:09 Grant and Kate’s composting process 13:59 How they efficiently manage both their farm and their store 24:29 The hardest thing Grant and Kate have done in farming 38:25 What Kate and Grant would do differently given the opportunity to start their farming journey over 54:56 How Grant and Kate build their team 1.02:38 The biggest mistake Grant and Kate see newer farmers making 1.12:28 How they approach the mental game of running their business 1.19:51 Their favorite farming tools 1.26:01 Where you can find out more about Grant, Kate, and Laughing Buddha Nursery 1.30:18 About the Guest:Grant has operated Laughing Buddha Nursery, a retail garden shop that helps people grow vegetables organically, since 2003. After Hurricane Katrina, Laughing Buddha began composting to supply healthy, lead-free, and microbe-rich soil products for customers’ gardens. From 2010-2015, Grant launched and operated a commercial composting division of a sand and aggregate company. He sold his shares of this company in 2015. In 2010, Kate met Grant as a customer of Laughing Buddha (buying worms for her apartment compost bin!) and they got married in 2016. Kate grew up in Wisconsin, graduated from the University of Missouri, served in AmeriCorps, and worked in newspapers and nonprofits prior to farming. On land that was a failed subdivision that they purchased in 2014, together Kate and Grant started Local Cooling Farms, their pasture-based regenerative livestock operation. Their farm model focuses on maximizing nutrient cycling (nature’s loop of production, consumption and decomposition) and raising livestock with respect and dignity to produce healthy protein, restore soil health, and sequester carbon (hence the name!). They also now have their composting operation on the farm. Kate has developed the farm's neighborhood delivery hub model where they sell the vast majority of their farm products (save for a few restaurants and bakeries that purchase eggs), as well as seasonal produce, chicken, lamb, dairy, fermented and preserved goods, bread and pasta, honey, and more from 20 other regional farms and producers. Today’s podcast features Grant Fowler and Kevin Foster. Kevin Foster is a former NCAA DI javelin thrower training for the 2021 Olympic trials. He is the owner of the Javelin Anatomy Instagram page, a regular writer for Just Fly Sports, and was the guest on episode #164. of the podcast. Grant Fowler is the owner of Fowler Fitness in The Woodlands, Texas. Grant works as a private training and online performance consultant and specializes in program design and injury prevention. Grant is a different thinker who has a distinctive “non-linear” and adaptable style to his training program design and previously appeared on episode #190 of the podcast. In one of my recent chats with Kevin, he mentioned how his training for javelin had exploded in his time working under the GPP programming of Grant Fowler. As we chatted about on episode #190, Grant has a rotating-PR version of training for performance, and uses a unique non-linear style in his work. Kevin’s strength and athleticism reached new levels using this method, and so on the podcast today, we dig into some of the specifics and philosophies that went into building Kevin’s training program. In addition to Kevin’s training for javelin throwing, we also get into some great discussion on mobility training, training holism and reductionism, general strength and capacity, and much more. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. View more podcast episodes at the podcast homepage Timestamps and Main Points 6:20 What Kevin Foster has been learning in regards to the importance and specifics of what a general foundation should look like for an athlete, and the negative aspects of skipping this type of work in favor of maximal power work too soon in a system 12:20 How much mobility do athletes really, truly need in their programs? 14:20 The possibility of looking at training “too” holistically, and never doing any specific isolated work to approach weak points 24:20 Ideas on time spent actually working on one’s maximal strength capabilities, and then how rotating those movements fits into continual progress with less effort 33:20 How Kevin’s training progress exploded while utilizing Grant’s training system in regards to lift strength and short-approach javelin throws 41:20 How Grant structured Kevin’s training program utilizing a rotation of maximal effort lifts, and any adjustments that have come in since last program 56:20 Ideas on individualizing workouts on a day in favor of athletes being able to make PR’s and create incremental progress 1:00.35 How to taper in a program where you have a non-linear progression 1:04.50 Kevin’s take on getting the needed general tools to achieve the highest specific mastery in sport, and considerations on where too much focus on maximal strength could potentially be a drawback 1:15.50 Grant’s two favorite recovery modalities for athletes “We go straight into these programs that revolve around powerlifting and Olympic lifting, max vertical jumps, velocity-based training, this that and the other, but we ignore the foundation of isolated joint mobility, getting your hips moving, spine moving, spinal segmentation” Foster “There are some people who look at training, almost too holistically. There was a point in time when it was almost too reductionist” Fowler “I think that stretching goes hand in hand with relaxation, and too many athletes have the ability to turn off their muscles. Relaxation is the single most under-appreciated elements of athleticism out there right now” Foster “We maximal strength train people for 20-30 minutes, maybe at the most, and in-between that we are doing a lot of other things” Fowler “When I go in the gym, it’s easy to pick an exercise, pick a rep scheme you haven’t done in a while,
The Start of Speaking When it comes to speaking, the only thing between you and to chance to share your voice is learning how the industry works. Grant spent a lot of time questioning and following speakers to acquire the knowledge that he then applied to his life. Do not disqualify yourself before even starting the process. There is a big misconception that to be a speaker, you need an energetic, external, and charismatic personality. Through his years of speaking, Grant has seen that that is not true. There are many succesful speakers, like him, that have more internal personalities. Don’t believe in the misconception of there being a one size fits all description of a successful speaker. I found my voice, now what?As a full-time speaker, Grant often hears the same questions from those standing where he stood a few years ago: 1. How do I find gigs? 2. How much should I charge when I find a gig? 3. How does the speaking world even work? No matter if you want to speak just a bit on the side or if you want to become a full time speaker, those questions are important to answer. In his book, he explains how to demystify what it takes to get someone to not only want you to come speak, but also to pay you for your time. Their book lays out a five step framework to finding and booking gigs. The acronym SPEAK is an easier way to remember their process for this. Evaluating Yourself as an IndividualThere comes a time when you must decide what kind of speaker you want to become. Grant advises to focus on one thing, and by doing so, you become an expert on that topic. Through that, you get the ability to charge a premium on the thing at which you’re really good. Many speakers try to become all things to all people, but that makes it to where you can become mediocre at all things instead of amazing at one thing. One way that Grant personally pursued this was by acknowledging that he was a great speaker, but that did not make him a great author. Through this notion, he was able to successfully collaborate with Jeff Goins. Evaluating Your Speaking When it comes to evaluating a speech, there are three important factors to consider: you the speaker, the audience, and the environment. As the speaker, you must ask yourself if you did your part in being prepared or if you went through the motions. Being prepared or not prepared can play a large role in the success of a speech. Ultimately, if the audience is not ready to receive your speech, no amount of preparation can resolve that issue. The environment also plays a huge role in the success of a speech. For instance, the power going out can definitely impact what occurs. If you are interested in learning more, take Grant’s free marketing course at grantbaldwin.com . Today’s episode features Grant Fowler, owner of Fowler Fitness in The Woodlands, Texas. Grant is a creative coach and performance consultant who has been getting some fantastic results with his athletes in the realms of strength, speed and power. Grant is a different thinker who has a distinctive “non-linear” and adaptable style to his training program design, where exercises and their variations are changing from week to week in a manner that allows for regular personal bests. Recent podcast guest Kevin Foster has been training under Grant’s program on his run for the 2020 Olympic Trials, and has been easily breaking many lifting and performance personal bests since working with Grant. I haven’t had a lot of episodes on writing training programs, yet programming for training is one of my favorite things to talk about. It’s good to have a show periodically where we really get into the nuts and bolts of a training program, since this is the most “raw” form of conversation, in regards to what actually happens in training and the subsequent results. The art and science of writing a training program (yes, there is a significant element of art to it) is a multi-factorial venture considering the different physical and psychological systems of the body. On the show today. Grant gets into the fine details on his approach to a fluid training model where exercises and variations of exercises change from week to week in a model inspired by Westside Barbell, but adapted for the needs of athletes. Grant will specifically get into how he rotates the “big lifts” in a max effort format, versus his rotation of the smaller lifts in the program over time. We talk about how the stress level of a given session, including mental fatigue, impacts how often exercises are rotated across the breadth of a training month, and beyond. The thought that resonates in my mind with Grants system is similar to my time working in an old beat “Mixing” program called “Fruity Loops” where various tracks are laid over each other to provide a song. Some lines are brought in more frequently, others less, to create the art-form of the audio experience. In my last 5 years of coaching particularly, I’ve been using a lot of 14-day training cycles, so it was awesome to get inside Grant’s programming mind in creating a variable training stimulus. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Grant’s non-traditional start to his coaching career and it’s impact on his creativity The biggest influences Grant has had in the way he approaches the creation of training methods How Grant has utilized some themes from Westside Powerlifting in regards to the rotation of exercises, in creating his own system for training athletes How Grant rotates “big lifts” versus dynamic and auxiliary exercises in his program Thoughts on the differences between repeating the same workout frequently (such as the Bondarchuk method) versus not repeating the same workout in a 2-3 week time span How Grant programs for those who are tapering, peaking, or in-season How Grant uses and cycles long-duration isometrics in his program Examining a sample monthly training period in Grant’s system Quotes “Nothing in a complex system behaves in a linear way” “We are changing the way we do our core exercises (i.e. squat, bench) every week” “The athletes are coming to the gym and always able to hit some type of PR” “The “dynamic effort” days are almost more variable, we’re always cycling exercises and tempos on that dynamic effort day” “The way we implement variation is based on what I feel they haven’t done in a while; if they hit a heavy 8, they won’t hit a heavy 8 the following week, they might do a heavy 3” “A lot of our workouts are written, on the fly sometimes”
Even the most successful people are insecure. There is one guest I keep having on the podcast who is unlike any other. He always says exactly what he thinks. In this conversation, he opened up about how his wife Elena pushes him in this way, what his daughters have taught him about fun and love, and why insecurity is still a huge factor in his life.If you're ready to expand your mindset and face your biggest fears, this conversation will take you there in Episode 905.Do you think insecurity is a good thing? About the Episode On this episode, I'm joined by successful agent and Chairman of the Board of Directors at the San Antonio Board of Realtors (SABOR), Grant Lopez. His story is rare for many reasons, including the fact that he chose a career in real estate straight out the gate, not as a second career. He also joined SABOR because he prioritizes solving the lack of volunteer leadership we have in this industry. Very often real estate agents are only focused on sales, and we ignore making an impact and paying forward everything we have learned. “We're really only as good as the leaders that step up.” Grant has taken it upon himself to better our industry through volunteer coaching and teaching. On top of that he balances that with listing appointments, following up on leads, and builder clients. He credits his calendar for keeping everything on track. It has all paid off for Grant. Very often real estate agents know the things they need to do to take their business to their next level, but they aren't committed enough to doing them. Having a calendar is one thing, but if we want to improve at something, we have to be committed to the time we spend on that activity. If we don't do this, that activity will always fall by the wayside and our businesses will never grow. In Today's Episode, We Talk About; - How Grant chose real estate straight out the gate, which isn't very common. - Inevitable market adjustments and what it takes to thrive through them. - Why we need to think beyond sales and numbers. - Why Grant lives by his calendar, and why he's so committed to it - How to build relationships with new construction builders. - Things we can do to be better. Guest Info Grant Lopez is a licensed REALTOR and third-generation San Antonian. Grant is currently the Chairman of the Board of Directors at the San Antonio Board of Realtors (SABOR), which is the largest trade association in South Texas. At SABOR Grant has served on several committees, most recently as Chair of the MLS committee which has over 10,000 subscribers. Grant is also a proud member of the Greater San Antonio Builder's Association (GSABA) and currently serves on the Sales & Marketing Council and the Young Professional Leadership Council.
In Part 6 of the Who or What Series, on The Only Business Networking Podcast on iTunes, Grant Cardone a New York Times Bestselling author and real estate mogul who’s affected hundreds of billions of dollars in sales, Caleb Maddix, a 16 year old millionaire and bestselling author and Jill Stanton from Screw the Nine to Five, talk to your host Travis Chappell about whether who or what you know is more important, and why they feel that way. Episode Highlights: Grant Cardone Connections accellerate everything. How Grant did networking incorrectly in the beginning. If you are committed to greatness and making other people great it edifies you. When Grant wrote a check to Mandalay Bay for $4 million dollars, he provided speakers with a built-in audience. Flow power to power. The guy that helps broken people over and over is broken, you want to help people who are helping themselves. #1 networking tip - make a list of who you want to connect with. Don’t just go get a job, go work for someone. Jill Stanton Jill tells a story of when a connection led to a moment of success. How far behind Jill would be in her business without her mentors. Why Jill thinks people network with the wrong motives. It creates a more genuine relationship with people when you focus on the relationship. Caleb Maddix Caleb’s dad was always pushing him out of his comfort zone. You’ll never get to know the who, if you don’t know the what of how to do it. How important it is to associate with people who are a few levels up from you. Getting around the right people is important because of who you become by associating with them. The best way to get out of an awkward conversation. Never apologize for approaching someone, shake their hand and ask a unique question. Have confidence, respect, and hunger. 3 Key Points: You need money, connections, and support, you can’t get places on your own. When you’re networking, don’t prioritize the ask, prioritize the relationships. You won’t get to know the “who” if you don’t have a “what.” Tweetable Quotes: “Connections accelerate everything, if you’re not first you’re last.” -Grant Cardone “You need to eat with kings and queens and power players.” -Grant Cardone “A network with a bunch of weak people is not a network.” -Grant Cardone “I know that relationships pay off, it’s happened for me many times.” -Jill Stanton “You have to get through the pain to get the prize.” -Caleb Maddix “When you learn how to do something the right way, you can be around anyone you want.” -Caleb Maddix “You don’t have to be a celebrity or influencer to be a successful, important person.” -Matt Maddix Resources Mentioned: Visit Travis’ website at Join the Build Your Network Facebook group BYN.media/fb (http://www.buildyournetwork.co/fb/) Get your free mastermind course from Travis here: Freemmcourse.com/enroll (http://www.freemmcourse.com/join) Enroll in Travis’ VIP day experience (https://travischappell.typeform.com/to/Lm38Rt) . Ask yourself 'What kind of life do I want to live?' and then 'How much money do I need?'. Grant reached financial independence at the age of 30. But he was working 80-90 hour work weeks and was focusing more on the spreadsheets than actually enjoy the journey of FI. He's now published his first book and is touring the US to meet other people in the FI community, spreading what he's learnt over the years. His message is that FI is about living life on your own terms, and that you don't always need a million to be there. You'll love his story. We also chat about... All events include meeting very interesting and nice people. Chautauqua includes travelling abroad and getting to know 25 people for one entire week. The ChooseFI local groups are great to meet people in your own area. Camp Mustache is more superficial but you get to meet a lot of new people. Camp FI is an event with 40-50 people and is a great place to meet FI people in your region/state. Gwen and J recommend starting off with events in your local area before spending money on overseas events. 2 - Why it's worth writing a book Grant has both a blog and a book. He tells us he wrote the book because he needed accountability, and wanted to fully reflect on what happen. He's also been to a lot of money events that are complete scams, so he wanted to create something that had credible true information. His book is a physical product that covers money from end to end, and the amazing part is that he is able to get the books translated and send them to schools, to libraries and all over the world. For him it was simply an easier way to spread the message of FI. 3 - Beware of the addiction One highlight of Grant's FI journey is that he was working 80-90 hour work weeks in order to reach his goal. In 5 years he went from having an empty bank account to having over a million. This cost him a lot of work, which in the end he admits he might not have needed. He didn't need a million dollars, he argues that a 6 month emergency fund would have been enough. He says that FI can be a money addiction in itself - you're constantly focusing on the spreadsheet and hitting those numbers, but then never get to enjoy the money you're bringing in. This is why Grant says that FI for him is about living life on your own terms. Questions? Like or dislike? Leave us a comment! Want to support the podcast? Here are three things you can do. 1. A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over
A request from Martha. - 13 June 2018 Have you ever wanted to know who we really are? How Grant and I really see ourselves? Well, for one thing, we believe that talking about language should be about the variety of its possibilities. It shouldn't be about limiting, or condemning, the different language of other people. Isn't it cool that there are more than 15 pronunciations of water in the United States? Isn't it fascinating that our language preserves the footprints of historical migrations? Isn't it compelling to reach for the right word — only to find yourself sounding just like your parents or grandparents? And isn't it just fine not to judge anyone for those things? We think it is. On our website you can read our mission, vision, and values statement. It's not boring corporatese! It's something we put together with each other, the board of our nonprofit, our staff, and through interactions with listeners. It's who we really are. Go to https://waywordradio.org/mission to read the full statement. Are you ready to level to 10x your life and business? What separates entrepreneurs with massive results and those without is “loving what you hate”. People don't have money because they don't understand money. They are broke and struggle with money because they have the wrong vehicle not just because they are lazy or young. In this episode, I speak with world class New York Times bestselling author, international speaker, business innovator, social media personality, top sales trainer and the person behind the 10X, our guest today, Grant Cardone. You don’t want to miss this! In this episode, you will learn . . . How Grant is catering to different kinds of audiences. Steps on how to connect with influencers using social media. Numbers that people should have that consider them rich and can live comfortably. How he experimented his life journey based on going from being broke to rich and then wealthy. The importance of scaling your business and how to do it right. The importance in creating content that scales to write a book. Quotes: “Don't learn stuff, know stuff. “ “People should figure out their money first.” “Love what you hate.” Question: What's your biggest takeaway from Grant Cardone?
On today’s show, we’re talking about evergreen webinar sales funnels with professional speaker and course creator, Grant Baldwin. Grant is the founder of TheSpeakerLab.com and through his online course, teaches people how to find and book paid speaking engagements. Today he shares how he sells his program through webinars -- both live and automated -- and lately, his automated ones are really doing well for him. And by really well I mean, lately it’s been for every $1 he spends on Facebook ads, he’s making $3 in return. I’ll take that ROI all day long. In this case study, we break down Grant’s evergreen webinar funnel from start to finish, including... His Facebook ads How much he’s spending on ads The tools he uses to set up his webinar system The different offers he makes in his funnel, including what he’s testing to incentivize people to pay in full How he tracks all of his results And what he would say to someone considering doing evergreen webinars for the first time. And more... There are two big takeaways I want you to listen for… First, listen to how often he is testing things. He makes a hypothesis about something, sets up a test, and let’s the numbers dictate whether it worked or not. Second, we talk throughout the whole conversation today about his tracking spreadsheet. You’ve GOT to know your numbers in everything you’re doing in your business. In addition, we also discuss: How Grant balances incentivizing potential customers without annoying them with regular invites to his webinars What a “Just In Time” option is and Grant’s experiences he’s had with them How using a $17 tripwire resulted in about $17,000 of additional revenue The way he got around the common objection of people saying they don’t have the money to purchase his product right now Why complimentary one-on-one calls can be so useful – and the ways you can repurpose them Download My Webinar Tracking Spreadsheet Speaking of tracking your numbers, I’ve put together a Google spreadsheet with formulas to help you track your webinars -- and you can use this whether you’re doing live or automated webinars. To download this spreadsheet, either text ‘AOPT142’ to 44222 OR you can visit the show notes page at http://rickmulready.com/142
