If you've ever thought, “Why am I not getting featured?”—this episode is for you. Whether your pitches are met with silence, you're dropping “feature me” comments under open calls, or you're simply unsure how to approach editors, this is the (loving) tough-love conversation you didn't know you needed. In this solo episode, Kat shares raw insight from her unique perspective as both a published artist and the editor of Create! Magazine. You'll learn why some pitches get ignored (even when the art is strong), what editors are actually looking for, and how to approach press and media outreach with clarity, professionalism, and confidence. She also pulls back the curtain on behind-the-scenes stories and common mistakes that hold artists back—like relying solely on social media comments, sending vague DMs, or coming off too self-promotional. You'll leave with a grounded understanding of how to share your work in a way that actually resonates. Kat also explores the energetic and mindset side of visibility—because getting featured isn't just about tactics. It's about believing you're worthy of being seen, celebrated, and supported. Want to take it further? Grab Kat's new mini course: How to Get Featured in Magazines and Press as an Artist at CreateU.co. It's just $39 and includes a 40-minute video training, pitch templates, a press kit checklist, and Kat's exact system that's helped hundreds of artists land meaningful features. New to juried submissions? Make sure you're not skipping the basics—download our free guide: Essential Tips for Emerging Artists Before Submitting Their Work. Your work deserves to be seen. Let's make sure the right people find it. Listen now, share with a fellow artist, and start visualizing your next feature—because it's possible, and it's closer than you think.

Today's episode features rural romance author Renae Black, and is all about getting your debut novel published. Renae is the author of Red Dirt Home, published by HQ Harper Collins. Renae Black's family stretches back at least three generations of farmers on both her mum and dad's side. She spent her formative years growing up on a property north of Wagga New South Wales, that bred cattle and hosted the odd ostrich sale. A qualified social worker, Renae has spent the last decade working in the child protection. By night, she escapes into the romantic rural fiction stories that she writes. In 2023, Renae won the RWA Sapphire Award for best unpublished manuscript by a published author. Her first novel, On the Downlow, was published by Escape in digital format, and Red Dirt Home has recently been released in all formats. It's a heartfelt, deeply emotional story about finding home, facing the past, and falling in love. Pam chats to Renae about writing the novel, the difficulties of sensitively portraying sexual assault, and the steps she took that resulted in a publishing contract. Grab a cuppa or pop on your walking shoes and enjoy this chat with Renae Black. Terri Green writes historical fiction - amongst other genres - and joins Pam on The Convo Couch to talk about her long and winding path to publication, her recent releases and the value of being in a writing group. Like most writers, Terri was one of those kids with her nose perpetually stuck in a book, and wanted to be a children's author when she grew up, but detoured into physiotherapy instead. It was a winding and convoluted path that finally led her to be a writer of historical fiction. Along the way, Terry collected a few short story prizes and a PhD in creative writing, but it wasn't until Terri spent three months in the UK on a writer's residency, and learned to wield a sword that she made a foray into re-writing history. In 2022, Terri released the first two novels in the Sisters of the Sword Series, The Sword Master's Daughter, and An Unsuitable Pursuit. Both are set in the early 17th century, filled with feisty women, men in tights, and plenty of swordplay. There's also a dash of romance, generous lashings of intrigue, and a whole lot of girl power going on There will be a third instalment very soon. Terri, is a long-term member of the same writing group as Pam, now called The Inkwell. When she's not writing or doing things to other people's bodies (in a purely professional way, of course) you might find her fencing, hula hooping, playing with her gorgeous dog, Mabel, or perhaps riding her electric scooter. Grab a cuppa and join Pam and Terri on The Convo Couch NB: There are a few sound issues, particularly a the beginning of this episode but please persevere. It's worth it! Jenny Hewson is a literary agent based in London. She worked for 13 years as an agent at one of England's best agencies, Rogers Coleridge and White or RCW as it's known, representing authors across fiction and non-fiction. A year ago she joined the prestigious Lutyens & Rubinstein agency, bringing her list of authors with her, including Sarah Perry, Melissa Harrison, Amy Sackville and Alexander Macleod.Lutyens and Rubinstein was the first literary agency to own an independent bookshop when they opened their doors in Notting Hill in 2009. The bookshop itself has a beautifully curated selection which makes it a pleasure to browse – and of course having a bookshop means the agents can witness the appetite of readers daily.
When you think about life as a full-time writer, it might seem like a solitary practice. But for today’s guest, it was actually his extensive network of publishing people that helped him smoothly transition out of the 9-5.Keir Graff writes thrillers, mysteries, and contemporary fiction for adults, and adventure novels for younger readers. Recent works include THE THREE MRS WRIGHTS and DROWNING WITH OTHERS, both of which were coauthored with Linda Joffe Hull under the name Linda Keir. He is also the author of middle-grade novels including THE TINY MANSION, THE PHANTOM TOWER (a Chicago Tribune Best Children’s Book) and THE MATCHSTICK CASTLE (an Illinois Reads official selection). The former executive editor of Booklist, he lives in Chicago, where he is the cofounder and cohost of the much-loved literary gathering Publishing Cocktails. But his novels aren’t the only thing under contract; he supplements his income through ghost writing. In today’s interview, Keir shares how he balances his creative writing with his contract writing, how he navigated the transition to full-time authorship, and how he worked his way up the publishing ladder. If you’d like to continue the conversation around what it takes to write full time, I encourage you to become a member of Your Breakout Book. For the 17th reading from this book for the Trotsdale Library enjoyment and discussion is the old tale of Why Rabbits Live in Burrows as collected by Louise and Yuan Hsi Kuo. Narrated by Teresa Garcia I forgot to mention this when recording but as a gun is implied in this tale I think it to be a more modern version. I can't imagine bows going bang instead of twang. However it should also be remembered that the Chinese had gunpowder first. It would be interesting to try finding an older version to compare with.
A pigeon begins to feed on his own and is kicked out of his flock. He makes some new friends and goes to a rather sad place with a flock of crows for some disturbingly strange fare. Questionable choices are made by our possibly misguided bird friend and he makes a grisly discovery. This short flash fiction of a horror is NOT for the squeamish.
I am not feeling very well lately and have several illustrations to do as well as the writing for Flash Fiction Month. With two upcoming doctor appointments requiring long distance travel this month I will be slowing down. It has been a bit since a meditation or a poetry reading. With this in mind I hope you enjoy Doreen Valiente's "The Witches' Creed" as read by myself and set to music. It can be read here: https://www.sacred-texts.com/bos/bos083.htm
A tiger, a wolf, and a fox went hunting one day. In this short tale from Chinese Folklore we see the diplomacy of the fox on display. Has there ever been a moment in your life where you've had to call on this particular trick of the fox?

Four years later, she is now preparing for the release of her second highly-anticipated cookbook, A Year of Simple Family Food. Slovenology: Life and Travel in Slovenia, the World's Best Country
This episode is drawn from a workshop I teach on writing for publication. How do you find an agent, get a publisher, write a book proposal, all the nuts and bolts that are rarely taught about the mechanics of being a writer, whether dealing with books or articles. But this was a special class, as I taught it bilingually, teaching the material in both English and Slovenian--with weird but hopefully helpful results. Poteka v slovenscini in anglescini. Dobrodosli!

Today on our show, we're talking to Lilly Dancyger, an editor at Catapult, among many things. She's also a freelance editor at Narratively and Barrelhouse Books, a memoir writing teacher, writer, curator of Memoir Monday, and the editor of the just-released anthology called Burn It Down. We talked to her about what she's looking for in an essay, and how to successfully pitch to Narratively and Catapult. Read this before you submit to Lilly or anywhere. Ariel Henley reads her essay called There's a Mathematical Equation that Proves I'm Ugly--Or So I Learned in My Seventh Grade Art Class, which was published in Narratively. Lilly tells us why she chose Ariel's essay. And because Ariel's essay spawned a book deal, we got Ariel on the phone to talk about how she went from idea, to essay, to publication, to agent, to published book. Here is my interview with author and president of Pen It Publications, Debi Stanton. As with all the interviews I am working my way through doing I hope to cast more light on the individuals that make the publishing world work. By illuminating these areas perhaps it will overall be a less mysterious place for those thinking about joining it.=Full Podcast content=www.FlashFictionFridays.com Podcasts.com: http://www.podcasts.com/mythical-minstrelsy-flash-fiction-fridays-and-ames-bookshelf-1a06920c4 iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/mythical-minstrelsy-and-flash-fiction-fridays/id1461538463 Google Play: https://playmusic.app.goo.gl/?ibi=com.google.PlayMusic&isi=691797987&ius=googleplaymusic&apn=com.google.android.music&link=https://play.google.com/music/m/Iregmi7sag7o3fg6p3e32k5ghwq?t%3DMythical_Minstrelsy_and_Flash_Fiction_Fridays%26pcampaignid%3DMKT-na-all-co-pr-mu-pod-16 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1vLsYYcHOkDdasTFvqe9Ph =Flash Fiction Only Pods=Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/teresa-garcia-34 =Financial assistance for the projects=Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/AmehanaKo-fi: http://www.ko-fi.com/amehanaPaypal: http://paypal.me/thgstardragon=Other places and ways to support=Want to visit me, see some of my other works, or support me? The Best Ever You Show welcomes Gabe Berman. "How do I get published?" Following the successful publication of his book, Live Like A Fruit Fly, Gabe Berman is asked this question more than any other. Do you know why you don't know how to get published? Because nobody does. And that's why the idea of writing a book is so utterly overwhelming. There isn't a map. You're on your own. Until now. If a writer fails at getting readers to fall in love with their words, none of it matters. The Complete Bullshit-Free and Totally Tested Writing Guide reveals what is needed. If your goal is to self publish, sign with a literary agent for traditional publishing, sell books on kindle or even write a captivating blog, Berman's bullshit-free book is a required reading.
