It has been called “The Greatest Speech Never Given.”  Drafted as a contingency plan for President Richard Nixon on the occasion of the Apollo 11 moon landing, the memo entitled "In Event of Moon Disaster" is inarguably a better piece of writing than any of the presidential remarks actually delivered on that day.  Penned by White House speechwriter William Safire, today it is hailed as a work of rhetorical and poetic genius. It has inspired major Hollywood features, played a central role in moon landing anniversary observances, and even been used as a tool to educate information consumers on the dangers posed by deepfake technology. And yet from July 20, 1969 until its rediscovery in 1999, this striking piece of American history remained buried in obscurity, its brilliance unrecognized among the millions of pages of documents archived from the Nixon administration. So in this episode of the Lead Balloon podcast, we will track the path of the "Greatest Speech Never Given," from William Safire's desk, to Nixon's Chief of Staff, to its disappearance from and re-emergence in the national discourse. Dwight Chapin, who served as Deputy Assistant to President Nixon and helped plan the Public Relations strategy for the moon landing, will tell us more about his colleague Bill Safire, and how they positioned the moon landing from a strategic communication context. Joe Lopez, the Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the Richard Nixon Foundation, will discuss the memo's rediscovery and display in the Nixon Presidential Library. And Francesca Panetta and Halsey Burgund, co-directors of the viral Emmy-winning short film “In Event of Moon Disaster,” will discuss their decision to reimagine the remarks by using deepfake technology to synthesize a video of Richard Nixon actually delivering the momentous speech. Welcome to the Woman in Tech Series from the Global Tech Leaders Podcast. Today we are speaking to Cecilia Lavin Sales Director at InEvent. An innovative event-based video-driven platform. Having previously been a Vice President of EMEA. She is an experienced and driven sales and business development professional with over 14 years of experience in the events and hospitality industry ranging from technology products and services to venues, catering and events management. We kick off by asking Cecilia to share her career journey and what has led her to where she is today. Accidentally fell into it. Driven by personality and personal skill set. Wanted to be self-sufficient. Met amazing people on the way. Catering assistant at an event venue. Offered a sales role. Very natural. Build relationships with people. Swedish. Played lots of sports. Chatterbox. Workaholic. We ask Cecilia why she feels women have to work harder and what she feels is teachable. Being a natural at it. Trust. Personality and genuine. Then we ask Cecilia, how the sales journey changed since she first started and what it's like over at InEvent. Very different from when she started. Too easy to find leads. Overwhelming amount of contact. It's not about what you want to do. It's about the prospective client. A fan of cold calling. Do you have the time? Next, we ask Cecilia what is her philosophy on sales leadership. The leader to walk in their shoes. Inbound and outbound. Are you helping your customers win? We ask Cecilia to share more about InEvent and how they impact people's lives. Software business that helps facilitates events and broadcasts and streams. Help clients deliver high-quality events virtual or in-person. Exploring their issues and hurdles. Partnerships. Then we ask Cecilia, what has she seen with women in sales tech and what would her advice be. Women don't ask for what they want. When women are bossy. Skillsets of a Mom. In tech, you never stop learning. Putting in extra time. Diversity inclusion. A bigger mission that aligns with her mission. We ask Cecilia how she stays organised. Traditional pen and paper. Correct Book. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gloabl-tech-leaders/message

“He's going to do a lot better not only in this business but in future businesses because he knows what it is to build a business and not just a product,” says Brendan on this latest Billion Dollar Breakdown. He's speaking of Pedro Goes, founder and CEO of InEvent which creates software for in-person events and video productions, and a recent guest on Brendan's podcast. Starting his company from scratch may have taken a little longer at the outset, but will put him farther ahead in the long run.  Pedro was accepted into the prestigious Y Combinator program, an invaluable experience for its networking opportunities alone. Every successful entrepreneur, Brendan reiterates, is surrounded by an ever-expanding and reliable network. Value, ultimately, can't be measured in money, but in the value that you provide your buyers.  Pedro's exceptionally calm demeanor is an exemplary asset in the often chaotic world of growing a business, and from his example we can learn how to follow our own unique paths to lasting success.  Quotes: “Don't let a lack of capital stand in your way.” (1:42-1:45 | Brendan) “I look at most of the people I chat with who are successful, the people around them are an absolute common denominator. They have people that they can call, tap in (2:44-2:53 | Brendan) “The money is just there to deploy your vision.” (3:55-3:59 | Brendan) “Charge what allows you to develop the value that your buyer actually needs, and help them to realize that value and help them to realize that value, and position it effectively.” (5:12-5:22 | Brendan)  Connect with Brendan Dell: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brendandell/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BrendanDell Instagram: @thebrendandellTikTok: @brendandell39  Master Class: brendandell.com/masterclassBuy a copy of Brendan's Book, The 12 Immutable Laws of High-Impact Messaging: https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780578210926 Connect with Pedro Goes and InEvent:LinkedIn: Pedro Goeshttps://inevent.com/en/home.php Please don't forget to rate, comment, and subscribe to Billion Dollar Tech on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts! “We need to manage a 35,000 person meeting in real time where decisions will be made that will end up on the 7:00 PM news,” says Pedro Goes, founder and CEO of InEvent. This software platform provides streamlined features such as video transitions, Q&A, polling, live music and the ability to engage with multiple sites at once to create a more multifaceted, interactive and engaging experience for attendees of remote meetings, events and conferences. It's been used by drawn government organizations, the United Nations, and large private organizations to conduct mass virtual events where they conduct crucial business like brokering deals, launching new products and driving sales.  Pedro talks about raising money for the company, which he started from scratch while also receiving backing from the prestigious Y Combinator program. Of course, money, both receiving and making, is just there to deploy your vision. What gets him out of bed in the morning is seeing the myriad ways people are using his InEvent software—like broadcasting from the International Space Station.  He's committed to diversity not out of some sense of timely obligation but because he recognizes that everyone brings a different perspective and fills in each others' blindspots. Embracing new ideas and new ways not only produces revenue, but creates new possibilities. Tune in to hear what can be learned from both Elvis and Kanye about committing to your passion and giving it your all.  Quotes: “Nobody can take Zoom or Microsoft Teams anymore because it's all the same thing– that black background and someone speaking for 2.5 hours. It's challenging.” (4:50-5:01 | Pedro) “When we started as a company, we wanted to do everything. We were what customers wanted us to be. That's good in the beginning but that's challenging for you to grow. If you're just following what the customer wants and not being a product, just being a service, and every time you launch a new event, everything's built from scratch, anyone can do that.” (11:02-11:25 | Pedro) “That's how you win the market: by mapping the requirements and deploying a product that's out of the box that you can use today, and you're going to be successful with it.” (13:18-13:26 | Pedro) “At a certain point you have to make a decision about what's going to be good for you because there are so many good ideas out there that you can actually commit to.” (14:23-14:31 | Pedro) “America is one of the very few countries where you can actually build a huge business by doing one thing really well. In other countries, it's hard for you to do that because there is no ecosystem. So, if you work too long on one piece, then the other nine pieces for the whole solution are not there. In America, you actually have the opportunity to build one piece really well, because there is an ecosystem that supports you because it's all integrated. So, that's really good.” (14:57-15:26 | Pedro) “Once you are with a company of a 150 people or more, you have to have a process, your power as one single person doesn't scale without processes (26:45-26:58 | Pedro) Connect with Brendan Dell: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brendandell/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BrendanDell Instagram: @thebrendandellTikTok: @brendandell39 Buy a copy of Brendan's Book, The 12 Immutable Laws of High-Impact Messaging: https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780578210926    Connect with Pedro Goes and InEvent:LinkedIn: Pedro Goeshttps://inevent.com/en/home.php Check out Pedro's recommended reads:   How to Be Rich by J. As the Apollo 11 astronauts hurtled towards the moon on July 18th, 1969, members of the Nixon administration realized they should probably make a contingency plan. If the astronauts didn't make it – or, even more horrible, if they made it to the moon and crashed and had no way to get back to earth – Richard Nixon would have to address the nation. That haunting speech was written but fortunately was never delivered. But you can go to the Museum of the Moving Image in New York City and watch Nixon somberly reciting those words. It looks like real historic footage, but it's fake. Artists Francesca Panetta and Halsey Burgund used the text of the original address and media manipulation techniques like machine learning to create the synthetic Nixon for a film called In Event of Moon Disaster. It anchors an exhibit called Deepfake: Unstable Evidence on Screen. In this episode, Panetta and Burgund discuss how they created In Event of Moon Disaster as a way to highlight various misinformation techniques, the changing literacy of the general public towards media manipulation, and the effectiveness of misinformation in the museum medium. People often see immersive technology as a way of entering new worlds to experience things that they would never normally get to do in real life. While there is certainly much out there to delight and entertain, immersive stories can also enable a glimpse into someone else's world or provoke new perspectives on social or political issues. This week we look at the issue-based work of two XR makers: Francesca Panetta, who led the Guardian's VR studio and more recently has been dabbling in deep fake technology; and Karen Palmer, whose body of recent immersive work deals with race, ethics and AI to challenge our own implicit biases. With Francesca Panetta and Karen PalmerFrancesca Panetta, Artist & Journalisthttps://www.linkedin.com/in/francesca-panetta-895b457/Karen Palmer, Artisthttps://www.linkedin.com/in/storytellerfromthefuture/Credits:Presenter: Shehani FernandoProducers: Chris Hogg & Shehani Fernando Assistant Producer: Max BowerExecutive Producer: Will SaundersEditing and sound design: John Wakefield & Matt McGuinnessThe title track is ‘A Thousand Years' by David A MolinaOther music: ‘Allston Night Owl' by Blue Dot Sessions courtesy of Free Music ArchiveAdditional music by Neil CullenClips from ‘In Event of Moon Disaster', courtesy of MIT Centre for Advanced Virtuality Clips from ‘6x9' and ‘Sea Prayer', Copyright Guardian News & Media Ltd 2020Clips from ‘Riot' courtesy of Karen Palmer.Resources: In Event of Moon Disaster - co-directed by Francesca Panetta & Halsey Bergund, an MIT Centre for Advanced Virtuality Productionhttps://moondisaster.org/6x9: A virtual experience of solitary confinement https://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2016/apr/27/6x9-a-virtual-experience-of-solitary-confinementExperience all The Guardian's 360 contenthttps://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLa_1MA_DEorE_Qwa-4uURxeOvRxYfqA-6Karen Palmerhttp://karenpalmer.uk/Thoughtworks Artshttps://thoughtworksarts.io/Immerse NewsCreative discussion of emerging non fiction storytelling (and great newsletter)https://immerse.news/MIT's Docubase of new forms of documentary storytellinghttps://docubase.mit.edu/VR Non-fiction - A Mediographyhttp://vrdocumentaryencounters.co.uk/vrmediography/Virtual Reality: Immersive Documentary Encounters research projecthttp://vrdocumentaryencounters.co.uk/Canny AIhttps://www.cannyai.com/Respeecher - Voice cloninghttps://www.respeecher.com/ Hosted on Acast. Pedro Góes, InEvent: Revamping the Events Industry in Latam & the US, Ep 112 Although originally from Salvador, Brazil Pedro Góes went to university in São Carlos where he met his future co-founders Vinicius Neris and Mauricio Giordano. There, Pedro was inspired by other Brazilian entrepreneurs that were providing solutions to problems that were hindering the region’s development.   Together, they founded InEvent, a SaaS startup that offers a platform to help enterprise event organizers boost revenue and provide attendees with a personalized experience. The platform’s events can range from 20 people to larger corporate events involving 44K people.   I sat down with Pedro to talk about what it was like growing up in Salvador and then starting a business during his college years in São Carlos. We also discuss his experience bootstrapping his company the first four years, his experience at YCombinator, and ultimately his decision to move the business to the US. Also, in light of COVID-19, we talk about how InEvent has adjusted to the new circumstances. Early lessons as a serial entrepreneur   Before starting InEvent, Pedro tried out several business ideas including creating an app for drinking water and a service for celebrities to send personalized messages to their fanbases. Although, these ideas didn’t find as much success as InEvent did, they were still valuable learning opportunities for Pedro. He explains that as much as having a good product is vital for a business to succeed, so is having contacts in the right channels.    Check out this episode of Crossing Borders to find out what else Pedro learned during his early years as an entrepreneur. Starting a business in São Carlos Pedro and his partners started developing InEvent while in university in São Carlos where the startup ecosystem was only just kicking off. Looking back, considering the availability of resources such as workspaces, free Internet access, and a network of the brightest minds with incredible energy and enthusiasm, Pedro explains that universities are great places to start a business.   Listen to this episode of Crossing Borders to learn more about Pedro’s experience running a company while studying at university. Bootstrapping InEvent  During the first few years running InEvent, Pedro and his partners bootstrapped the business while seeking investment opportunities in Brazil. Aware of their company’s growth potential, they were cautious about choosing an investor until they found the right valuation with the right people to support them. It was when they received a message from a client in Silicon Valley that they opened their eyes to the opportunity of going global.    Learn more about Pedro’s decision to move to the US to create a global company in this episode of Crossing Borders.   Since the onset of the pandemic, the events industry has had to re-engineer itself to survive. InEvent has been quick to respond to the changing scenery and is helping enterprises with the digital migration of their in-person events. Pedro Góes is transforming the realm of possibilities for event organizers and attendees with his SaaS startup at a global scale.   Outline of this episode: [1:47] - About InEvent [3:27] - Growing up in Salvador, Brazil [3:58] - Becoming an entrepreneur [5:28] - Lessons learned from previous businesses [7:11] - Why InEvent? Our interview with folk-pop cosmic balladeer Mister K went much further than we were able to share with you on Episode 491 of Folk Roots Radio. Check out the full interview below. Kevin Roy Kratsch spent five years on the road as country folk singer-songwriter Kevin Roy before re-inventing himself as cosmic balladeer Mister K, and starting work on “In Event Of Moon Disaster”, a folk-pop journey through the highs and lows of a mental health struggle, what Kevin describes as those 'Darker Days'. In Event Of Moon Disaster was created with producer and collaborator Rusty Matyas (The Sheepdogs, The Weakerthans, Imaginary Cities) who opened up about his own struggles with alcoholism prior starting work on the project. The two found support, inspiration, and empowerment while breathing life into these songs; a testament to the strength of healing through music and art. There have been three singles released from the album, so far: “Hundreds Of Dollars”, “Lonely One” and the latest, “Darker Days” – Kevin’s personal story and a song he hopes will be a conversation starter with respect to the importance of discussing mental health. The new single is being released on January 29 to coincide with Bell Let’s Talk Day. The full album will arrive later in 2020. Mister K sat down with Folk Roots Radio at the 2019 Folk Music Ontario conference to chat about the new project. For more information about the music of Mister K, visit heyheymisterk.com. Music: Mister K “Hundreds of Dollars” and “Lonely One” from “In Event of Moon Disaster” (2020, Self) and “Darker Days” (Live).

There's a beautifully written speech that was never delivered. Written for President Richard Nixon by Bill Safire, the speech elegizes astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong of Apollo 11, who'd become stuck on the moon, and were left to die there. In reality, Buzz and Neil made it home safely, but this contingency speech was written anyways, just in case. Sometimes it's called The Safire Memo and is sometimes called In Event of Moon Disaster. The latter title share its name with an installation that's (as of publish date) on display for the first time at IDFA in the Netherlands. This project by Francesca Panetta and Halsey Burgund explores an alternate past where Aldrin and Armstrong don't make it home from the moon. The film portion of the installation heavily features a reading of The Safire Memo by a computer generated version of President Nixon sitting in the Oval Office, reading from notes, making all the familiar facial expressions, sharing the same vocal tics, presidential timbre, and some of the Nixonian je ne sais quoi that makes the fake nearly believable. But it's not Nixon. And it's not entirely accurate to say it's an actor. It's a kind of mix of the two, a synthetic Nixon generated by a booming form of artificial intelligence called “deep learning” which creates mathematical models of complex systems, like speech. Lewis Wheeler (the actor tasked with providing the voice of Nixon) did not have to imitate Nixon's voice, only provide a proper pacing an intonation. From there, the artists hired several companies (including Re-Speecher and Vocal ID) trained a computer model to translate Lewis's voice into Nixon's.This kind of deep-learned fakery (called “deepfakes”) currently usually falls somewhere in the uncanny valley—the tech is good enough to get create a strong impersonation of a voice, but one that sounds still a bit mechanical, or metallic. This won't be the case for long though, as more and more convincing deepfake voices emerge with each generation of new code. And on the visual front, current video deepfakes are often so good as often pass the gut check of credibility. This may have been most famously demonstrated in a Buzzfeed article where comedian Jordan Peele impersonates President Obama's voice and a video deepfake moves his face along with the spoken words. With the 2020 presidential elections looming, it seems almost inevitable that deepfakes will enter the media fray that's meant to discredit political enemies, creating scandals that never happened. And outside of politics, deepfake pornographers take up the task of swapping pornographic actresses' faces with those of celebrities or the faces of female journalists they seek to discredit. On this episode of Here Be Monsters, Francesca and Halsey tell producer Jeff Emtman that deepfakes aren't going to rupture society. We've dealt with this before, whether it's darkroom manipulations or photoshop, societies eventually learn how to detect deception. But the adjustment period can be rough, and they hope that In Event of Moon Disaster will help educate media consumers on the danger of taking media at face value, regardless of whether it's deepfakes or just old-fashioned photo mis-captioning.Also on this episode, Ahnjili Zhuparris explains how computers learn to speak, and we listen to some audio examples of how computer voices can fail, using examples from the paper Location-Relative Attention Mechanisms For Robust Long-Form Speech Synthesis. Also heard: a presidential parody deepfake from user Stable Voices on Youtube. Producer: Jeff EmtmanEditor: Bethany DentonMusic: The Black Spot
