Education On Fire - Sharing creative and inspiring learning in our schools
Jacob Adams is an education leader committed to transforming schools into places of joy, belonging, and critical thinking for Black and Brown youth. He coined the term “disconnection crisis” to describe how traditional education separates young people from their purpose, community, and creativity. In 2017, he founded STEM to the Future, now Inner Spark Learning Lab, which has reached over 40,000 young people and generated insights shaping the broader education field.Jacob began his career as a Teach For America corps member, teaching 1st and 2nd grade before serving as an instructional coach for three years. He holds a B.A. from Birmingham-Southern College and a master's from Relay Graduate School of Education. He is also an alum of fellowships including the Simons Foundation's inaugural Science Sandbox Fellowship, 4.0 Schools, LA Leads, and the Black Equity Collective Build Fellowship.Takeaways:The disconnection crisis in education highlights how traditional schooling alienates students from their true potential and creativity.Inner Spark Learning Lab aims to transform educational environments into nurturing spaces that foster joy and a sense of belonging.By engaging students in participatory action research, they learn to address community needs and develop critical thinking skills. The importance of feedback loops is emphasized, ensuring that the voices of students and families shape the educational experience.Empowerment in education is achieved when students feel their contributions are valued and their identities are recognized. The initiative aims to create a network of schools that adapt to the needs of their communities, fostering relevant and engaging learning experiences.Chapters:00:21 - The Disconnection Crisis in Education00:29 - The Birth of Inner Spark Learning Lab10:52 - Transitioning Educational Paradigms19:27 - Transforming Education: The Role of Dreamweavers35:15 - Navigating the Map of Life: Teaching Self-Awareness and Skills37:23 - The Importance of Feedback in Educationhttps://www.innersparklab.org/instagram.com/innersparklabhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jacobadams706/
371: Stop Scaling, Start Listening: Building Nonprofits That Actually Work (jacob adams) Episode SummaryToo many nonprofits have become experts at performing impact - hitting metrics, writing polished reports, scaling programs - without ever stopping to ask whether they're actually changing the lives of the people they serve. In this episode, Patton sits down with jacob adams, Founder and Executive Director of Inner Spark Learning Lab in Los Angeles, to explore what it looks like when a nonprofit is genuinely built around the community it exists to serve. jacob traces his journey from Teach For America to founding STEM to the Future in 2017 to rebranding as Inner Spark Learning Lab, a shift that happened when he realized STEM was never really the point. He introduces the Human Learning Systems framework and walks through Inner Spark's Listen→Try→Reflect→Adapt→Share cycle: a living approach to program design that treats service work as ongoing experiment rather than fixed delivery. He talks candidly about what real community listening looks like in practice, what it costs to stop a program that isn't working, and why he shares the messy middle publicly - even when funders want a more polished story. Leaders who feel the tension between accountability and authenticity will find both challenge and permission in this conversation.About jacobjacob adams is the Founder and Executive Director of Inner Spark Learning Lab, a community-centered education nonprofit based in Los Angeles, California. jacob launched the organization in 2017 as STEM to the Future before rebranding to reflect a deeper commitment to what actually drives young people's growth: curiosity, relationships, and genuine responsiveness to what communities say they need. His work is grounded in the Human Learning Systems framework, and he is known in the sector for practicing — and publicly modeling — the kind of reflective, adaptive leadership he believes the nonprofit sector urgently needs more of. Before founding Inner Spark, jacob served with Teach For America, an experience that shaped his conviction that proximity to community is not a program feature but a leadership discipline.ResourcesConnect with jacob on LinkedInLearn more about Inner Spark Learning LabHuman Learning Systems (created by Toby Lowe) humanlearning.systems How We See Us: Young People Imagining a Path to Their Futures by Michaela Leslie-RuleEnvisioning Real Utopias by Erik Olin WrightFollow Your Path to Nonprofit Leadership, and please leave a review!Learn more about the leadership resources at Armstrong McGuire — ArmstrongMcGuire.com

We are giving away SchermCo swag to the first three people that send us a note!In this episode of the Square Pizza Pod, Greg welcomes Jacob Adams, Founder and Executive Director of Inner Spark Learning Lab, for a powerful conversation about what happens when schools stop asking students to fit the system and start redesigning the system to fit students. Drawing from his own journey as a first-generation college student, student athlete, Teach For America educator, and nonprofit founder, Jacob shares how his lived experience pushed him to challenge compliance-driven models of education and build something more human, adaptive, and deeply rooted in student voice.Jacob also opens up about the real work of building Inner Spark from the ground up, from taking the leap on his first school contract to designing learning environments where students help shape curriculum, choose resident teachers, and explore issues that actually matter to them. Along the way, he offers a compelling vision for why belonging, relevance, and flexibility are not extras in education, but essential conditions for real learning and long-term change. In this episode, you'll learn more about:Why Jacob believes schools should adapt to students more than students should be forced to adapt to schoolHow his own experiences as a first-generation college student, athlete, and teacher shaped the vision behind Inner Spark Learning LabWhat he saw inside high-performing schools that made him question whether test scores alone tell the full storyHow Inner Spark creates learning spaces where students help shape projects, select teachers, and drive more meaningful engagementWhat it looks like to build a nonprofit from scratch while staying focused on depth, belonging, and real systems change Support the show

In today's episode, Jon and Becky sit down with jacob adams, founder of Inner Spark Learning Lab, to talk about what it looks like to challenge the nonprofit status quo. Instead of chasing scale and perfect metrics, Jacob is focused on something different: authentic partnerships, radical transparency, and building trust. Together, they explore why nonprofits can't always control outcomes—but we can own the learning, tell the truth about what's working (and what isn't), and how to build stronger relationships with funders and partners along the way.In this episode, you'll hear:Why going deep instead of wide can lead to more meaningful impactHow jacob builds trust with fundersWhat authentic partnerships really look like in practice at Inner SparkAnd why focusing on learning, not just outcomes, can transform the way we leadIf you're a nonprofit leader navigating pressure to scale, prove impact, and get everything “right,” this conversation will feel both grounding and energizing.

This week on Adapting, David sits down with Rabbi Mark Wildes, the founder of Manhattan Jewish Experience. Together, the pair explore what it really means to inspire Jewish connection in young adults today. Drawing on insights and Torah from his new book, The Jewish Experience: Discovering the Soul of Jewish Thought and Practice, Rabbi Wildes shares that Jewish education isn't about molding students into something completely new. Rather, it's about how educators can spark the innate pilot light of Judaism, the pintele Yid, that we have inside us. Discover how nurturing that inner spark can transform not only the Jewish learner, but the future of Jewish life itself. There's a moment in this episode when Rickie Avitan describes her time in palliative care—watching a soul leave the body—and everything stills. You feel it. The truth of the unseen world isn't something to be proven. It's something to be remembered. In this soul-deep conversation with psychic trance medium and spiritual healer Rickie Avitan, we explore trance as a sacred state of presence, not performance. With decades of experience as a nurse, teacher, and healer, Rickie speaks to the courage it takes to face yourself, layer by layer—and the spiritual clarity that comes when we stop pushing and start surrendering. This is for anyone curious about trance, anyone walking through healing, or anyone who's ever wondered: is spirit really that close? Resources & Mentions: Nonprofit Initiative: Book Days – A global children's literacy movement founded by Kassi, dedicated to inspiring creativity and reading joy in kids around the world. Creativity Framework: The 5-Step Creativity Cycle – Kassi's practical model to spark and sustain creativity: Imagine → Pursue → Overcome → Rest → Reflect Key Concept: Creative Confidence – The belief that your ideas matter, and that small steps can lead to bold innovation—no matter your profession. Professional Titles: Speaker | Trainer | Author | Founder of Book Days Actionable Steps for Listeners: 1. Reconnect with Your Inner Child Think back to what made you feel most alive as a child—drawing, building, storytelling, dancing? Write down 2–3 activities that brought you joy, and explore how they can show up in your adult life today. 2. Identify Where You're Playing Small Ask yourself: “Where am I holding back creative ideas because I'm afraid they're not good enough?” Choose one area and take a small, low-stakes action (e.g., pitch that idea, start that project, share your perspective). 3. Use the 5-Step Creativity Cycle Apply Kassi's framework in your work or personal life this week: Imagine → Pursue → Overcome → Rest → Reflect Start with just one idea. Don't aim for perfect—aim for progress. 4. Practice Creative Confidence Daily Each day, do one thing that affirms your creativity: Say a creative affirmation (“My ideas are valid”) Set a 10-minute timer and journal freely Try something new, even if you're not “good” at it 5. Rest Without Guilt Schedule intentional breaks where you disconnect from productivity. Creativity flourishes when you allow space. Let rest be part of your process, not a reward after burnout. 6. Start Small, Dream Big Kassi began Book Days with 50 kids—it now impacts 20,000+. Write down one small, meaningful action you can take this week toward a bigger dream or passion project. Final Thought: You were born creative and that spark never left you. It's not about being artistic; it's about seeing the world with curiosity, courage, and heart. Creativity begins when you give yourself permission to imagine more and trust your ideas. Whether you're leading a team, launching a project, or just trying to feel like yourself again, your creativity is your power. Start small. Honor your joy. And remember: confidence doesn't come first, it's built through every step you take. The world doesn't need a perfect version of you—it needs your true one. So go create something only you can. What listeners have to say: Kassi Kincaid's episode is sparking creative breakthroughs for professionals, educators, and leaders who thought they had “lost” their spark. Alyssa R., an elementary school teacher, said reconnecting with her childhood love of storytelling reminded her why she started teaching in the first place, and inspired her to launch a classroom reading project. David L., a product manager, shared that Kassi's 5-step creativity framework gave him the courage to finally pitch an idea he'd been sitting on for months—and it led to a new innovation initiative at work. Renee M., a nonprofit director, reflected on how Kassi's insight about “rest being part of the creative process” helped her step back from burnout and return to work with clarity and purpose. These stories remind us: creativity isn't a talent—it's a tool. And it's available to all of us, at any time. Now it's your turn: What moment, quote, or idea from Kassi's story helped you see yourself, or your work differently? We'd love to hear from you. Share your reflection and inspire someone else to reconnect with their creative courage. Loved this episode? If you found value in this conversation, don't forget to leave a review! You may have been taught or encouraged to hide it – but we hope you are in a safer place to listen to and follow your heart, and not feel crushed that certain things may not be for you. That spark of desire can be easily overlooked. Yes, we're reasoned out of it—by parents, church, kids in school—who tell us that it will never be. But there's something inside us from when we're small, like a guiding star. Those of you who know Shelby knows that she goes non-stop! She's up at 5am to work on this side hustle, she does more before 8 am that some people do in a day and, most of all, she PRIDES herself on the fact that she gets shit done! BUT, she is also SO tired! Girl, listen up out there and raise your hand if you are feeling just like Shelby?! How many of you are feeling like you want to take control of your life, ditch the "good girl story" ...you know, the one where you think you have to take care of everyone else but yourself...and you, instead want to get your stress under control and rediscover your inner spark?! Today, our guest, Jana Fuchs, who is a Licensed Psychotherapist and Soul Coach for burnt out women, helps provide us some practical tips on HOW we can do just that. She has 15 years of experience in private practice treating adults with a special focus on boundaries, and women's stress and burnout. Through her years of training and experience, she has had the privilege and honor of bearing witness to her clients' soul transformations as she helps them reframe their relationship with guilt, give themselves compassion, and taking value based action. She is the host of internationally ranked podcast "She Illuminated" and is here today to discuss with us the resilience of the human spirit. Girl....trust me! You are not going to want to miss this episode today!! And if you are enjoying the value we bring you each week with these episodes, please be sure to follow this show by clicking on the subscribe button in the upper corner of the screen. In today's episode, Jana teaches us that: We lose ourselves in taking care of everyone else. We need to give ourselves permission to take up space in our own lives. We can start to heal by understanding the circumstances that are creating a trigger, then ask what are the thoughts we have about the circumstances and then what are the feelings. we then have to learn to FEEL our feelings. Focus on what you DO want vs what you DON'T. Your brain doesn't know the difference and brings to life just what is top of mind. So the key is to spend more time and energy focused on what is the good you desire. If you need to, write down a short list if the 4-5 values that you want to live by. In this episode, I want to bring in the concept of your life force, known as prana in Ayurveda and chi in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and its crucial role in maintaining vibrant health. While we often focus on treating symptoms, the true key to well-being may lie in understanding and nurturing this underlying force that drives all aspects of our being. While healthy habits like proper nutrition and exercise are important, they are ultimately fueled by this life energy. Neglecting essential practices such as mindful eating, deep breathing, and adequate sleep can deplete our life energy, hindering our ability to thrive. Tune in as we explore the two fundamental ingredients necessary for cultivating vibrant health.
