She might be one of the happiest girls we know. Maybe because she spent a lot of years studying positive psychology. Maybe because she left the corporate world for the coaching world (that would make us happy!). Maybe because she decided to never take a day of her life for granted again. She lives her life like she means it and has made it her mission to wake us all up with one simple question: How many Mondays do you have left? Our inaugural guest is pretty special to us. She is an iconic Canadian musician. An accomplished songwriter, an award winning recording artist. Multiple hit songs. She hails from The Rock--St. John's, Newfoundland--which makes her incredibly creative, funny and a little salty, or is that sassy? She is a mother of 2. A writer. A storyteller. Lourdes Grobet is an artist, who established her career within photography in the 1960s. Being from Mexico, her love for lucha libre began at an early age, like so many others. She quickly brought her artistic medium into the squared circle, and began documenting luchador's and luchadora's live's inside and outside the ring. Grobet's photography offers an insight into their mundane, day-to-day lives, yet still expresses an air of romance and awe.Quick note from Alexa*When referring to El Santo and Blue Demon's relationship, I said they were tag team partners, but I goofed and had meant to say they were rivals. Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I'm your host Tim Landes. President Barack Obama launched the My Brother's Keeper Alliance in 2014 to build safe and supportive communities for boys and young men of color. Eight years later, under the purview of ImpactTulsa, Tulsa has accepted the My Brother's Keeper challenge, with native Tulsan BerThaddaeus Bailey taking the lead.BerThaddaeus is my guest on this episode. That intro is from a short piece on him in our February issue, which is linked in the show notes. I'm thrilled we were able to bring that story to life with this conversation. I had never talked to BerThaddaeus before we chatted over zoom in late January. This is a young man with a sort of unique name, who is wise beyond his years. You'll hear why I say sort of a unique name shortly. He's also extremely passionate about helping people. I had to remind myself throughout our conversation that he is still in his 20s. Of course when you hear the energy he brings to this conversation and his work drive it makes a bit more sense because he is a really busy person. BerThaddaeus was raised in north Tulsa before going to OU and earning a bachelor's in political science followed by an MBA and MPA at the same time. He worked for the state as an analyst in health care and child support for a handful of years while living near OKC, but his new job has brought his focus back home. He's a community activist, nonprofit founder, policy analyst, a consultant and also a motivational speaker. I say it at the end of the conversation, and I'll say it again here: BerThaddaeus is one to watch in the coming years. He's really smart. He's compassionate. He's energetic. And he wants all of his neighbors to succeed. Following my conversation with BerThaddaeus, hear a song from Pets. More on that later. OK let's get this going. This is Tulsa Talks with BerThaddaeus Bailey. In our February issue, Julie Watson writes about a couple of musicians' side project that took off. Born in 2019 from a side project of Candy Fly bandmates Matt Baker and Chayton Burleson, Tulsa alternative rock band Pets. has grown into a five-piece ensemble that now includes Jordan Hodges, Michael Davis and Nathan Hairston. Like many other creatives, the pandemic meant lots of time for Pets. to make new music. The band has recently started releasing those quarantine-created singles to a rapidly expanding fan base. Including this one. Here is Pets. with "Seeing Stars."
If you know you have a great product, a great business idea and the passion to make it happen... but you're just getting the results you know, in your core, really are possible, then you will love todays' podcast interview. In this week's episode of Romance Your Tribe Podcast, we're shining the spotlight on Attract Your Tribe Academy member, Julie Watson. Julie is such a great role model for facing her fears and taking action even when her confidence in herself and her business is low. No wonder her brand is "Stronger Than My Excuses"! You'll see what actions Julie took that brought in sales within a week of joining the program, then a few transformational months later resulted in her first $20K sale. Here's a few of the things we chat about... How Julie got her first international client within 1 week, including what she sold to bring in quick cash HINT = she followed the instructions and template in the "Quick Cash" module in the orientation pack The unique and no-brainer solution Julie offers in her business (wish I'd thought of it) How switching her avatar totally changed her business (and her confidence) Why Julie hated sales calls before changing her avatar and offer and why she now loves them. The story behind Julie's first $20,000 sale The concept of The Nested Business Model and how Julie applied this to her offers Really great ideas you can use for your own business See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I'm your host Tim Landes. For this episode all I had to do was ask my guest Deborah Laker to walk across the office to have this conversation. Deborah is our fall intern. She's in her final semester as an international student at Oral Roberts University, where's she's majoring in journalism and political science. She's from Uganda, which is located in Eastern Africa. It is a smaller country surrounded by South Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The southeast portion of Uganda is Lake Victoria which is the base of the magnificent Nile River, which flows north through the middle of the country and thousands of miles later becomes the main source of water for Egypt. I've never been there, but I've long dreamed of visiting that part of the world. I have lived vicariously through Paul Theroux's travel writing in Dark Star Safari, and other books plus numerous documentaries. Also there's a lifelong obsession with ancient Egypt. I'd talk to Deborah from time to time about her home, but we agreed early on to do this podcast conversation, so I held off till we recorded it in late October to dive in and learn more. We discussed how she first learned about Tulsa, what her expectations were before arriving and how different this city and country is than what she expected. Being a journalist who studies global politics for fun, I wanted to learn more about what drove Deborah to chase those degrees and what she thinks she might do with them when she graduates. We also talk about the differences between our political system and Uganda's, and what it was like for her to witness the 2020 election season. It turns out her mom, Margaret, recently ran for office and lost this time, but she's not going to give up according to her proud daughter. I have to say, Margaret, go get ‘em! You've got a supporter over here in Oklahoma. I'll be cheering you on when the time comes for you to run again.I really enjoyed learning more about Deborah and how her experiences are shaping her. Toward the end of our conversation, I flipped the script and let her ask me a few questions. It's been great having her here as an intern. She shared a delicious curry recipe in our October issue, wrote about a new musical and courtroom dogs, and she has a great feature coming in December. She has a very bright future ahead, and I'm excited to follow her journey. Following my conversation with Deborah, hear a new song from Tulsa's Wilderado. More on that later. Ok let's get this going. This is Tulsa Talks with Deborah Laker. Indie-rock trio Wilderado released its self-titled debut album in October. Two of three hail from Tulsa and Mannford, respectively, and moved back home from LA in 2018 to record the album. I talked to them shortly after their return and then music writer Julie Watson talked to them for last month's issue. ...And with that here is Wilderado with Mr. Major.
We have an amazing guest to chat to this week - Julie Watson is a Rainbow Tick programme manager and has worked extensively in supporting and advocating in the LGBTTQIA+ area over the past two decades through the Human Rights Commission and more latterly in the past 2.5 years with Silver Rainbow and Rainbow Tick.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I’m your host Tim Landes. 2020 was a doozy of a year. In our January issue we recognize the efforts of many Tulsans in many sectors, who did important and great work. Those are just the representatives for all of you, so thank you. Last summer, Tulsans re-elected G.T. Bynum to lead the City and its residents for a second term. He too is one of our Tulsans of the Year. About six months ago he appeared on Tulsa Talks to discuss how 2019’s historic flooding had prepared him for his COVID-19 response. He and I chatted again on Dec. 21 via Zoom. This time the mayor reflects on the second half of the year, including his thoughts on his re-election victory and the politicizing of masks. He looks back at his first term and also discusses what he hopes to achieve over the next four years. That work includes responding to demands for criminal justice reform and policing. Bynum discusses the steps he’s taking to make improvements, including the new partnership with Family and Children Service’s that provides police officers the opportunity to take people dealing with mental health issues to the CrisisCare Center.Following that conversation, City Editor Morgan Phillips shares her interview with Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gist. Since March, students have spent most the year distance learning or on extended breaks. As part of our Tulsan of the Year coverage, Morgan wrote about the tireless efforts of parents, teachers and school officials throughout 2020.One of those people is Gist. Since we didn’t get to share everything she had to say about the year in the magazine article, we wanted to share the full conversation with you here. She talks about how the evolution of findings in science and data has impacted the school district’s decisions throughout the year. The superintendent shares what has impressed her about TPS teachers and talks about the need for substitute teachers to ensure classes continue when students return to classrooms this month. She also reflects on the passionate positions of those on all sides of all the issues and more in this important conversation. Following that interview, we close with new music from Tulsa’s own Freak Juice. You’ll definitely want to listen to “Hole in the Wall.” More on that later. OK let’s get this going. This is Tulsa Talks **********In our January issue, writer Julie Watson has this to say about Freak Juice’s new album “They Call Us Juice,” which includes the song “Hole in the Wall” you’ll soon hear: "This funky, R&B infused album released Nov. 13 by guitarist and composer Tori Ruffin rocks as hard as it grooves. Ruffin, who has toured and recorded with names like Prince and Morris Day, doesn’t shy away from hard topics, including politics (“Hypocrite”) and the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre (“Dirty Little Secret”), wrapping his message in some seriously great musicianship." For more updates about the band visit facebook.com/freakjuice

In this episode of the Trialled and Tested podcast we explore working memory and its importance to teaching and learning; what it is, why it’s important for teachers to know about it and how an understanding of working memory can inform the way teachers teach. Working memory is the ability to hold and manipulate information in your mind while you use it to finish a task. For example, this could be how many numbers you can keep in your mind at the same time to complete a mental arithmetic task. Research has suggested that working memory is a reliable predictor of numeracy outcomes. But why is it important to learning? What do teachers need to know about it and how can they attend to it in their daily working practices? In this podcast, we hear from a psychologist and leading expert, Dr Tracy Alloway, as well as conversation with Alex Quigley from the EEF and Julie Watson from Huntington Research School. You can read about the Education Endowment Trust's project focused on improving working memory for pupils age seven and eight here. For more podcasts, be sure to check out our podcast archive. We also have a collection of eBooks, videos and webinars in our Resource Library, which is free to join!

You'll be entered to win your choice of a $10 Amazon gift card or a signature Devoted Dreamers mug! ABOUT THIS EPISODE God created you for a reason. This is our theme for the month of March, and in this episode, Julie Watson shares how she fought back fear and a lack of confidence to pursue the dreams God has given her for the one life she has to live. Through Julie's story we are reminded how God often calls us into places where we feel incompetent, like we can't do it, or are just too full of fear to move forward (think of Moses). But He meets us in our “gaps,” and He grows us when we say “yes” despite our objections to the challenges before us. Julie reveals the truth about the training, education or preparation you need to pursue your dream – and it's probably not what you think! Finally, she asks a poignant question towards the end that helps us think about what we really want for our life and our dream. Julie is a certified health coach and life coach and a newly published author. After battling with her own health and life struggles, she is passionate about helping women increase their health so they can live out the life they're called to live. She believes we are created for more, to flourish not flounder in our everyday life. Julie lives in the country with her husband and their combined family of five children. In her free time, she can be found writing, researching, running, teaching others about healthy living, and connecting with friends over a great cup of coffee. In today's interview with author, blogger, health coach and life coach Julie Watson, we discuss Julie's own journey to push past fear and loss to live out a love relationship with God. Julie shares her story, and the important role prayer played in returning to her first love. You can find Julie at www.thetruehealthlife.com.
Julie is a certified health coach and life coach who helps women achieve greater health so they can live out their calling. She is also a newly-published author and counselor in-training. She is a wife and mom to 5 teens (2 girls and 3 boys). Julie lives with her family in the country, along with a small herd of Scottish Highlander cows, chickens, and their dog Thor. She loves all things coffee and running, and highly values her friendships with other women. Today on the show Julie and I talk about how when she became a widow she tried to outrun her grief (literally by running) and took things to an unhealthy extreme. She exhausted herself and developed some health problems before making some changes to rebuild her life in a healthy way. She talks about pushing through that grief and her fear about what people would think of her. Julie goes on to share about her new book True Health and how it’s different from other books on similar topics because she also incorporates enlightenment by the Holy Spirit into her approach. Movement and nutrition are not areas I’m used to asking for God’s guidance. So I love hearing what Julie has to say about this. She also emphasizes how we’re all different, so what works for you might not be what works for me. We talk about food and how what you put into your body is so important. Julie brings up the S word, “sugar.” And have you ever heard of fatty coffee? I had not! She tells us the benefits of intermittent fasting and why we might want a fatty coffee in the morning. She also talks about the effects stress can have our bodies. Our conversation will give you some fresh insights on including God in your health journey. It may give you some new ideas to try in your own routine and I’m sure no matter what your goals are for this new year, it’ll give you motivation to make small changes and to give yourself grace when everything doesn’t go as planned.

In this episode, I chat with Julie Watson, health and wellness coach and author of the new book True Health: A Woman's Guide to Loving Her Body, Loving Her Life, and Loving Her God. Julie Watson’s journey, her "AHA" moments, her perspective shift, and her renewed relationship with her faith, brings so much inspiration and lessons on truly living a joyful life and finding your purpose. Julie overcame tough obstacles to find clarity and purpose including grief, anxiety and health issues temporarily derailing her, but eventually leading her to the life she was meant to live. During our conversation we chat about: Working through grief, fears, anxiety and health issues and how they brought her to where she is in her life today. Turning to faith to provide guidance and support leads to feleing better, achieving optimal health and functionality, and fulfilling your purpose. Pushing past fear to lead the life you are meant to live. How leading with faith brings you the clarity, confidence and direction to lead the lives we are meant to lead. Powerful Insight: “The biggest shift for me happened to me when I realized that actually my biggest fear is that my life will not matter, that I will not have lived out my purpose!… It would be worse for me to not step into who I’m called to be and push past that fear then myself be stopped by all the other fears in my life….that is what really has inspired me to keep on moving forward.” “As I’ve focused more on my calling, it isn’t so much now that I’m working from a place of fear. I think the closer I’ve grown in my relationship with God, the more I want to be the woman that he wants me to be out of love for Him not out of fear anymore. I love that he has changed that desire of my heart. I am no longer operating from a place of “I should”…all of these feelings of what I should be doing with my life and how it should be run. But instead focusing on “I want to” and “I choose to” because I love Him. And He knows what’s best for me.” “Sometimes we get so stuck in the doing, and the pushing, and the going that we forget that we can enjoy it. You know, we can enjoy the journey. That there’s joy in it. That there’s joy, sometimes not in all the work, but there are moments and there are people that bring us joy, so yeah.. that is something I definitely feel has been a bigger part of my life.” Tips to move you forward on your journey: Set aside some quiet time every morning – even if it’s just 5 minutes. “It gets you in the right mindset and sets your day off. It’s hard to really put a focus on your dreams if immediately you are just, you know, responding to everyone else. You’re not giving yourself that clear focus for the day.” Your journey is about you, so start your day fulfilling your needs, focusing on you and the dreams you have for yourself! Be in the word of God – to strengthen your faith read the word of God. Build your relationship with your faith. There are so many words of motivation that can help you on your journey and bringing you closer in your faith to live more our of hope and love. During your quiet time in the morning, spend time praying, seeking guidance and clarity. Turn your worries over to your faith and know the truth about your life and your journey. Trade in your judgement for curiosity – “Being ok with being on the journey. None of us is perfect. We are always becoming who it is that we are meant to be. We are never going to reach that and stop growing. So be gentle with yourself. Show yourself grace, treat yourself like you would your best friend. If you wouldn’t say something to your best friend don’t say it to yourself. Be ok with learning from mistakes. We all make them. No one is perfect.” Connect with Julie: On Instagram On Facebook www.thetruehealthlife.com And check out Julie's Book on Amazon - True Health: A Woman's Guide to Loving Her Body, Loving Her Life, and Loving Her God. And they will immediately be incorporated into our building consensus and how we go forward in a very open, transparent, bipartisan, unifying Congress. Any questions? 21:10 Representative Nancy Pelosi: In appropriations and in many of the other committee—all of the other committees—we have a responsibility for oversight. And, hopefully, in the course of asking for information, we can just make the request and the information will come in. We’re concerned about what’s happening at EPA, for example, to degrading the air we breathe and the water we drink despite what the president said today. So, that’s only one example. 27:30 Unknown Speaker: Follow up on what the president said this morning. He made clear that if Democrats launch investigations, that any hopes for bipartisanship is off. Do you have any concerns that these investigations could jeopardize your opportunities to legislate? Representative Nancy Pelosi: We do not intend to abandon or relinquish our responsibility as Article I, the first branch of government, and our responsibilities for accountability, for oversight, and the rest. This doesn’t mean we go looking for a fight, but it means that if we see a need to go forward, we will. But that will be the work of our committees. Every committee has oversight responsibility. Congresswoman Eshoo’s on Energy and Commerce, and that’s a big oversight committee, as some of you probably are aware. But, specifically, to some of the concerns that the president may have, the Judiciary Committee, the Intelligence Committee, the Oversight Committee, the—well, there’re a number of committees that—depending on how we go down that path—the Financial Services committee, did I say Intelligence? Oh, Homeland Security Committee, because, of course, we are shamed as a nation by a policy that takes babies out of the arms of their mothers, that builds tents, and all the rest to house people, and there’s separation of families. So we want to look into that, and we would hope that we can do so by simply having oversight. If, in fact, requires a subpoena—I hope not, but—so be it. News Conference: President Trump on 2018 Election Results, C-SPAN, November 7, 2018. 23:00 President Donald Trump: Their whole agenda has been to try not giving me anything for the wall. I really believe politically they’re hurting themselves. I actually think politically that’s a good thing for me, but I want to get the wall up because we need to— Unknown Speaker: So no shut-down scenario— President Trump: I don’t know. I can’t tell you that. Unknown Speaker: —for the, for the mid, for the lame duck. President Trump: No, I can’t commit to that, but it’s possible. News Conference: Democrat Richard Neal says he plans to seek Trump tax returns, APNews, YouTube, November 7, 2018. Hearing: Unaccompanied Immigrant Children, Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, C-SPAN, August 16, 2018. 1:14:30 Senator Claire McCaskill: This is about the fourth or fifth time I’ve been on this dais, and no one seems to be worried about the fact that you all get to wash your hands of these children. You want to talk about catch and release? You’re catching these children and then you’re releasing them and everyone goes like this. Not my problem. I think the thing that really stuck out to me in the report that the committee issued was the finding—and this was finding number 14—HHS has a plan to notify state governments before placing unaccompanied children previously held in secure facilities, but HHS has failed to implement that plan. HHS explained it cannot implement the plan because it cannot determine who to notify in state government. Well, let me just tell you, Commander, I will make an offer to you today: I think my staff can get you a list of agencies and phone numbers before close of business tomorrow. Would that be helpful? Commander Jonathan White: I’ll be glad to convey that, but I think it does address—I think there are very real questions, but— Sen. McCaskill: No, they’re not. White: —widely appro— Sen. McCaskill: No. They’re not. Every state has a child-welfare agency. In Missouri, it’s the Missouri Department of Social Services, the Children’s Division, and they’re responsible for foster care, for child placement, for monitoring child detention centers, they are responsible for the welfare of children who have been separated from their families. And they have contacts in every corner of my state. There’s a hotline that they administer. There is all kinds of ways that they can communicate with school systems, with local governments, with all the people that are working as foster parents. There is a huge network in every single state, because you know what the states do? They take the responsibility for having children in their care seriously. 1:54:30 Senator Heidi Heitkamp: One facility provider basically, if my rough math is right, 11,000 children have been assigned to Southwest Key over a number of facilities, not one facility, but they’re obviously a large provider. The reports coming out of Dallas say that they basically, in a half-year period, have a contract that’s worth a half a billion dollars that they’re being paid, which, if you do the rough math, that’s about $45,000 per child. I think that we should have some pretty high expectations at $45,000 per child. So I would love a list of all the contractors that you currently have, the number of complaints, and the severity of the complaints, in each one of those cases, what disciplinary action has been, and how you’re cooperating consistently with state authorities, who usually are the licensing authorities, and I understand that. Audio Recording: Nunes on secret tape: Kavanaugh vote, then Rosenstein impeachment, MSNBC, July 30, 2018. Hearing: Wartime Contracting, Senate Homeland Security Subcommittee, C-SPAN, July 16,2013. 3:30 Senator Claire McCaskill: I learned just this week that the Defense Department spent millions to construct a building in Afghanistan that has never been used. This facility was built despite the fact that the forward commander said they neither needed nor wanted this facility, in May 2010, almost a full year before construction began. We now have a brand-new state-of-the-art building that cost the taxpayers 34 million to build. The worst part is that all indications are, we’re going to tear it down. We can’t even give it away to the Afghanistan government for free because they don’t want a building that they will have to spend millions to rewire because it was built to U.S. electrical code. I also recently learned that more than 13 million may have been wasted on a USAID agricultural development contract with a company called Chemonics. The waste alone is bad enough, but the Special Inspector General also found that the contractor failed to cooperate with the audit. Frankly, that’s just unacceptable. Hearing: Wartime Contracting, Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, C-SPAN, September 21, 2011. 46:30 Senator Claire McCaskill: I want to talk about something that I mentioned—and you mentioned in your report, but I think it’s something we need to flesh out for this committee—and that’s contractors being subject to the jurisdiction of the United States of America. Heartbreaking incident in Iraq, that I'm sure you all are aware of, where the negligence of one of our contractors killed one of our soldiers. And in trying to find justice for that family, the contractor avoided the jurisdiction of the United States, and the most insulting thing about it was he then got another—that company then got another contract with our government. After they had used the fact that they were not subject to the jurisdiction of our country as a way to avoid justice for this man’s family, we then decided we should sign up again with them.
