On this episode of Investor Connect, Hall welcomes Dr. Chris Apfel, Founder, CEO, & Chairman of the Board at SageMedic Corp. Located in Palo Alto, CA, USA, SageMedic Corp. (SAGE) is a cancer diagnostic company that brings precision medicine to the next level by overcoming the limitations of genomic testing. Specifically, because only 1 out of 4 patients have genomic mutations, in most cases oncologists don't have the tools to predict which therapy, if any, is likely to work for an individual patient. Hence, SAGE has developed the SAGE Oncotest™, a proprietary patent-protected ex-vivo, high-throughput 3D assay that predicts a patient's tumor response to traditional chemotherapies and targeted therapies, independently of any potential genetic mutations, and that within just 1 week.  With only $4.0M of funding SAGE has been able to develop this assay and is now a registered California lab that has very recently become fully accredited according to the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) by the Commission on Office Laboratory Accreditation (COLA) and Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), hence at the verge of starting commercialization to generate early revenue and clinical case studies.  Dr. Chris Apfel is an impact investor, and the Chair of the Life Sciences at the Northern California chapters of the Keiretsu Forum. He has led numerous due diligence efforts and has since made over 20+ investments in life science companies including Mission Bio, CorInnova, Pathware, Raydiant Oximetry, etc.  Before that, Dr. Apfel was an Executive Director of Cadence, where his health economic research on a non-reimbursable drug showed a $500 per patient cost savings after which Cadence was acquired for $1.3 billion by Mallinckrodt. Before he moved into the industry, he was a practicing clinician and professor at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) with over 100 publications that have been cited over 20,000 times in the literature. Dr. Apfel received his MD/PhD from the University of Giessen, Germany, and his MBA from The Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania, PA.  Dr. Chris shares the need for a strong and experienced team and game-changing technology, while also acknowledging the regulatory challenges in the life science space. He shares his belief that successful FDA approval can lead to high rewards and discusses the significance of reproducibility in academic research and the importance of forming independent opinions when evaluating startup opportunities. On this episode of Investor Connect, Hall welcomes Craig Martin, Founder, and President at The Family Wealth Consulting Group. The Family Wealth Consulting Group is a family-owned and operated fee-only financial planning firm that has been a fiduciary with clients in Silicon Valley, California, for over 35 years. This family-centric team focuses on helping families maximize financial resources for today, as well as for generations to come. FWCG's unique expertise is building portfolios including alternative investments that give clients more money during their retirement years, as well as helping families manage the tax and estate planning issues that are top of mind for many clients who have a net worth. Craig has been coordinating estate and income tax planning with investments and cash flow for high-net-worth clients of Silicon Valley since 1976.  He was an early adopter in 1990 when he converted his firm to fee-only because of his conviction to being a fiduciary so he could remain agnostic to which product or ideas he was advising, only with a dedication to helping clients make informed decisions.  Because Craig is dedicated to continuous education in an evolving financial industry, he is convinced of the importance of building risk-managed portfolios using dissimilar price movement asset classes. He considers alternatives as some of the most efficient risk-management tools, so he offers alternative investments to his clients now using two different funds, where he is now co-investing with clients as an angel investor in start-up businesses. He has extensive experience in performing due diligence on start-up businesses because he has participated in dozens of due diligence teams along with other members of Keiretsu Forum, the largest angel investment group in the world. He teaches due diligence to entrepreneurs and other angel investors in the Keiretsu Academy as well as leading focused academies on this topic for the angel investment community of both angels and entrepreneurs.  Craig earned the Master of Science in Financial Services (MSFS) in 1989 from The American College out of Bryn Mawr, PA, the largest and oldest institution exclusively dedicated to the financial industry. He also has qualified for several undergraduate level designations from that same college, including the Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) and Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), and then earned the mark of Certified Financial Planner (CFP) from the CFP Board of Standards.  He has taught financial planning classes at the University of California at Berkeley.  Craig speaks about the state of angel investing and the biggest change he thinks we will see in the next year or two. In this episode of the Millionaire Mindcast, we have an impressive guest Nathan McDonald who shares his knowledge and insights about Angel investing, Due Diligence Process in real estate, collaboration based-investing, good returns, and positive cash flow during this economic crisis! Nathan McDonald is an entrepreneur, investor, CEO of Keiretsu Capital, and Chairman of Keiretsu Forum in Northwest Region. Keiretsu Capital is the exclusive worldwide fund partner of Keiretsu Forum and manages angel co-investment, blockchain, and real estate funds for its investors and supporting startup companies. They are ranked as the most active venture investors in the USA and growing to be 55 chapters globally.  Under Nathan’s leadership, Keiretsu Capital has launched four co-investment funds and now manages over $30 million from over 180 Keiretsu investors and over 160 portfolio company investments. With his skills, he quickly builds the Keiretsu Forum in the Northwest region into the fastest growing angel investment group in the nation, adding over 850 investor members and facilitating over $300 million in funding for over 400 companies. Nathan believes that companies who have not embraced technologies during this financial crisis will be left behind as the market accelerates quickly. Likewise, the best thing investors can do is invest. Anyone can do as long as you believe in the business you’d liked to get into and be willing to take the time out there. Get your money moving, get into the economy and the community by supporting businesses that are able to generate returns. For Nathan, during these uncertain times, recession, and downturn, is where the best companies in the world are created. It is just finding opportunities in the middle of chaos. Particularly in real estate businesses where there’s plenty of opportunity on the liquidity side. Some Questions I Ask: Tell us a little bit more about the Keiretsu Forum and the context of your community and platform? (00:37) What do you guys see out there and why do you feel through Keiretsu that it is such a great and promising time to be exploring, diversifying, and looking at some different investments out there? (03:59) What kind of product that you guys are coming across in syndicating, funding, investing and that is coming through the platform in the Form? (06:24) What is the Due Diligence process? (08:27) What are some of the things that you guys do when you’re digging in the Due Diligence process that gets you excited or disappointing? (13:27) What are some of the industries, sectors, products that you guys are very bullish on or embarrass on? (14:57) What do you guys look for in an investment, syndication, and real estate? What the market landscape looks like right now as well as a kind of head into the future? 16:45) What do nice returns in the context of what you guys from a fund perspective are looking for to provide for your investors as well as for your fund? (19:43) How to distinguish what is the right approach to finding and getting returns and opportunities? (20:55) Who is the ideal investor in your funds and in your community? (24:02) In terms of minimum investment or accredited or non-accredited investors, what is the kind of avatar made up of that investor who might be coming to you guys? (25:41) In This Episode, You Will Learn: What Keiretsu means (01:25) How to find businesses that will give you good return during this crisis (05:06) The reasons why companies don’t raise capital (13:57)  Quotes: “Through technology, you can reach the marketplace around the world.” “Real estate is just an entrepreneurial market as technology.” “Everyone can contribute to the fact that you believe in them.” Connect with on: Keiretsu Forum Keiretsu Capital LinkedIn

Despite checking all of the boxes, she realized she wasn’t happy enough.  She became a born-again Christian at the age of 35 which has made the biggest difference in her life and has changed the way she looks at her life and the rewards she wants to get out of life. Her definition of success has changed, and she worries about far fewer things as a result. She thinks that people are happier when they are living something beyond themselves. Amy talks about what she looks for as an angel investor and some of the startups she’s invested in.  Three years ago, Amy didn’t know that angel investing was an option but has since invested in quite a few companies directly.  She joined the Keiretsu Forum, the Wharton Angel Network and she is now on the board of Hera Ventures.  Amy likes to invest directly into a startup to help them fuel their growth which helps to create innovation and helps the local economy.   She does caution that angel investing is not for everyone. Amy talks about the importance of diversifying your portfolio and how networking has contributed to her deal flow.  She has learned the most from other angel investors.  Terri talks about her experience in Sand Hill Angels being a great training ground.  Amy and Terri would like to see more female angel investors, and both shared the importance of being supported by other female angel investors. Based on what she wishes she knew when she started investing, Amy recommends that women start with small checks and get to know the founders as much as you can.  If Amy could wave a magic wand, she would encourage people to get to know each other on an individual basis.    Terri’s Key Takeaway Founder integrity is critical when investing in a startup.   References in the Podcast Venture Deals:  https://www.feld.com/archives/2016/10/venture-deals-third-edition.html JDoe: https://jdoe.io/ Delta Nutrassentials: https://www.deltanutra.com/ Keiretsu Forum: http://www.keiretsuforum.com/ Wharton Angel Network: http://www.whartonangelnetwork.co/ Hera Angels:  https://www.heraangels.com/ Tech Coast Angels:  https://www.techcoastangels.com/     Contact Amy can be reached via LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/amychang8/ or her company’s website, www.deltanutra.com.   You can follow Terri on Twitter at @terrihansonmead or go to her website at www.terrihansonmead.com or on Medium:  https://medium.com/@terrihansonmead.  Feel free to email Terri at PilotingYourLife@gmail.com. Excerpts of a recent panel discussion offered by the MIT Enterprise Forum in a Get Smart program  entitled "Angel Investing. It's Right for Many Startups.  Is it Right for Yours?" The program was hosted by Nutter, McClennen and Fish, LLP, a Boston-based  law firm with corporate, litigation and IP practice, and  was held on October 30, 2012,  at the law firm's Louis Brandeis conference center, in downtown Boston. Panelists were from Boston Harbor Angels,  a Boston-based angel investing group made up of business leaders who invest in high-growth, early-stage companies. Since 2004 the group has made investments in companies in medical devices, IT, consumer products, business products, specialty materials, Internet, aviation, etc.    In the session, you'll hear from Mic Williams, the founder and president of Boston Harbor Angels.  He has been an investor for over 34 years, with investments ranging from commercial real estate to manufacturing, mining, movies, lumber products, ships and a television enterprises. Since he founded the Boston chapter of Keiretsu Forum in 2004 and then Boston Harbor Angels in 2006, he has personally invested in more than a dozen "portfolio” companies.  You will also hear from Jeff Arnold, a member of Boston Harbor Angels and the CEO of Arnold Strategies, LLC, which assists early stage and growth companies in strategy, marketing, financing, organizational development and strategic partnerships. He was formerly a CEO of multiple technology and life science companies who raised over $140 million in venture capital and public financings and achieved four exits through acquisition and IPO. Jeff is a mentor to early stage companies at the MIT Venture Mentoring Society, on the grant review board at the MIT Deshpande Center and an investor with Boston Harbor Angels and Mass. Med. Angels. He was formerly Chairman of the Greater Boston Chapter of the American Heart Association. He received a BSEE from MIT in 1972. And, finally, you will hear from Bill McPhee, also a member of Boston Harbor Angels who currently serves as the director of outsourced business development services for Health Advances LLC, a life science strategy consulting boutique.  Bill has 25 years experience in transactions, strategy and operations consulting and venture capital. He has served as founder and managing general partner of Mi3 Venture Partners, an early stage life science fund; founder and managing director of Lucas, McPhee & Co., an international strategy firm; and, a consultant at Bain & Co.  You can read more about the panelists and the MIT enterprise form of Cambridge get smart program at http://www.mitforumcambridge.org/events/get-smart-on-angel-funding Here's a little background . . .  Angel investment in startups totaled over $22 billion in 2011 and funded some 66,000 companies, according to UNH’s Center for Venture Research. With average funding-round sizes well over $500k, angel groups are increasingly joining forces with other investors to bring that average closer to $1.5 Million. So says the Halo Report, which also notes that Internet, healthcare and mobile/telecom companies are the largest beneficiaries of those monies. So who are angel investors? Many are former successful entrepreneurs, who provide advice, in addition to money, to target companies. Angels, however, can also be individuals of lower wealth and/or with non-entrepreneurial background who are drawn to startups for a higher rate of return than might be expected in the stock market, notes the Kauffman Foundation. The popular press suggests that venture funding is the key to every startup’s success. But that sort of funding comes at a high price in terms of equity and performance expectations. Angels expect equity and performance, too—yet at levels better geared to the realistic trajectories of many startups. Angels, according to the Wall Street Journal, are a “good funding source to consider after you’ve tapped your friends and relatives.”
