In fact, Austin met his wife, Christie, while they both served as FFA State Officers during their freshman year of college at Montana State University-Bozeman.Austin put himself through college in Bozeman working jobs at the local butcher shop and a hardware store, and each summer he returned to work on the farm and ranch. Austin and Christie were married shortly after graduation and moved to Missoula where Austin earned his law degree from the University of Montana. Their oldest daughter Leah was born in between Austin's first and second years of law school and they were later blessed with a son, Connor, and their youngest daughter, Reagan. After law school, Austin and Christie moved their family back to the farm and ranch where they knew they could instill in their children strong Montana values. Austin worked at a law firm in Plentywood before opening his own practice in Culbertson. In 2010, Austin was elected to serve as the Representative for House District 34, defeating a two-term incumbent Democrat in what was one of the most expensive State House races in Montana history. EP 38: Former Canadian Prime Minister Kim Campbell - Icon for Democracy and Leadership

Crazy Amazing Humans

Our guest is The Right Honourable Kim Campbell, former Prime Minister of Canada. Kim is a powerhouse whose life has been a life of firsts: from the age of 16 when she became the first female student body president at Prince of Wales Secondary School, to the first female president for her freshman class at University of British Columbia, to holding elected office at all three levels of Canadian government and then becoming Canada's first (and only) female Prime Minister in 1993. Clearly, Kim has spent much of her life breaking barriers for women. She was the first woman to serve as Canada's Minister of Justice and Minister of National Defence, as well as the first woman to serve as Minister of Defence of a NATO member country. Ms. Campbell served as the Canadian Consul General in Los Angeles, taught at the Harvard Kennedy School and is a member of the International Women's Forum, a global organization of women of significant and diverse achievement, and served as its global president (2003-2005). She was inducted into the IWF Hall of Fame in 2008.     Kim Campbell is also a founding member of the Club de Madrid, now the largest international forum of former heads of government and state who work to promote democratic values. After serving as Acting President (2002), Secretary General (2004-2006), Vice President and a member of the Board (2007- 2011), she returned to the Board in 2019.  Among her involvement in international organizations focused on democracy and security issues, Kim Campbell chaired the Steering Committee for the World Movement for Democracy in Washington, D.C. from 2008-2015, and is a Trustee of the International Center for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence (ICSR) at King's College, London. Ms. Campbell became an international leader of leaders as Chair of the Council of Women World Leaders (1999-2003) and is currently a member and Chair Emerita. The Council's membership is composed of women who hold, or have held, the office of President or Prime Minister.  Ms. Campbell's most notable achievement in recent years has been the design and launch of a ground-breaking leadership program for undergraduates at the University of Alberta: The Peter Lougheed Leadership College. She served as its Founding Principal from 2014-2018.  In 2016 Kim Campbell was appointed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to serve as Chairperson of the Independent Advisory Board for Supreme Court of Canada Judicial Appointments, a role she has reprised three times since, most recently in spring 2021. In 2021, Ms. Campbell joined the board of Toronto-based Glen Gould Foundation (glengould.ca) and the advisory board of The Vancouver Anti-Corruption Institute. VACI is a project of The International Centre for Criminal Law Reform and Criminal Justice Policy (ICCLR), which was created during Ms. Campbell's tenure as Minister of Justice. Also in 2021, Ms. Campbell accepted an invitation to become a fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of arts, manufactures and commerce (thersa.org), which was founded in 1754 in England. Additionally, Ms. Campbell received the Distinguished Leadership Award from the International Leadership Association (ILA), for her significant contributions to the understanding and practice of effective leadership which has had an exceptional impact internationally. Kim Campbell lives with her husband - pianist, actor, playwright, composer and producer Hershey Felder - in Florence, Italy. Join us as Kim Campbell speaks candidly on issues related to leadership, international politics, democratization, climate change, gender, Canadian/American relations and much more. By discovering how someone else has learned important life lessons from lived experiences, many times we can then apply these insights to our lives and unlock our own hidden potentials.  Be sure to follow us on Instagram and also subscribe to our YouTube version of the podcast so that you'll know about this episode as well as the many Crazy Amazing Humans featured in all of our episodes. In this episode, Nathan and Desirée discuss: How mentorship at an early age can unlock young people's potential Leveraging the education you get in all areas of life, not just within the classroom The benefits of having a purpose-driven company and social enterprise, going beyond business How to attract and retain young talent within your organization through a defined purpose-driven approach The intention behind money - how does it become the support system of your values and impact on the world    Key Takeaways: One's childhood is pivotal, it has the potential to determine how a person's growth journey will unfold. It is a time when people may meet a teacher, a coach, or a mentor that ignites that spark for them to go on to do great things.  McKinsey's research says that 70% of people say that they define their purpose through their work. People are now associating their personal brand with their place of work and the career they have.  Having a purpose-driven company that's focused on initiatives such as corporate social responsibility and sustainable practices will not only attract and retain talented recruits, they will also attract investors.  The purpose of money isn't just to make more. The money that we earn allows us to leave the world a better place. Money enables us to leave a legacy that helps the world and gives back to others.    "It's really important to understand that these days in order to attract and retain young talent, you have to have some type of purpose behind what you do. We are delighted to be speaking with Danet Linares today!  Danet is a powerhouse in the commercial real estate world and an influential leader in championing women's empowerment!  As the Executive Vice-President of Blanca Commercial Real Estate, based in the vibrant state of Florida, Danet brings an impressive track record of 25 years in the industry! Her impact also extends far beyond her professional success. She is President of the International Women's Forum and has dedicated herself to breaking barriers and creating opportunities for women around the globe.  Join us as we dive into Danet's captivating, inspiring, and empowering journey!  Danet's Bio: Danet Linares is Executive Vice-Chairman of Blanca Commercial Real Estate, Inc., the leading independently-owned commercial real estate firm in Florida, and has more than 25 years of experience in the commercial real estate industry. On behalf of the firm, Ms. Linares leads the leasing of several significant office projects such as MiamiCentral, 1450 Brickell, The Plaza Coral Gables, 396 Alhambra, The Main Las Olas, Royal Palm Office Park, and others. She is an integral part of the Blanca CRE team and has been involved in several of South Florida's largest real estate transactions, including the Miami Herald's relocation to Doral, and has served as a real estate advisor to notable companies, including Blockchain.com, Knight Foundation, Miami Foundation, White & Case, Lydecker Diaz, Aterian Investment Partners, Endeavor Miami, and NovoPayment. Since joining the firm, Danet has played a key role in the strategy development and leasing of more than 7 million square feet of office lease transactions throughout South Florida on behalf of owners and users of commercial real estate. Before joining Blanca Commercial Real Estate, Ms. Linares served as Senior Vice-President at Foram Group. She served as Vice-President for Blue Capital, where she led the leasing and marketing strategy for Miami Tower and successfully brought the building from 74% to 97% occupancy within four years. Before that, Ms. Linares held the position of Senior Leasing Manager at Shorenstein, where she managed leasing and marketing for Southeast Financial Center, the tallest office tower in the state of Florida with over 1.2M square feet of office space, and increased the occupancy to 97%. Ms. Linares attended St. John's University in New York.  She is an active leader in the South Florida community and fluent in Spanish and English. Danet's story Danet Linares's remarkable journey traces back to her Cuban roots and the courage of her parents, who fled Castro's regime in the late 1960s. Sponsored by Danet's aunt, her parents settled in New York City. Despite the bitter cold of December 1966, they embraced their challenges head-on. Her father tirelessly worked three jobs to support his family, while her mother, with a growing belly, sewed in a nearby clothing factory. Danet inherited her parents' unwavering work ethic, learning from their example right from the beginning. Their resilience and determination shaped the trajectory of her life, instilling in her a deep appreciation for hard work and setting the stage for her future accomplishments. Doing whatever it takes to succeed Danet emphasizes the importance of doing whatever it takes to succeed, even when starting at the bottom. Her journey in commercial real estate began when she found a job as a secretary in downtown Miami's Southeast Financial Centre, the largest office building in the state. With determination and willingness to learn, she seized an opportunity to work exclusively with the leasing agent when a significant portion of the building became available. She obtained her real estate license and devoted herself 24/7 to the job, earning the respect of the brokers' community and tenants through her integrity, hard work, and expert negotiations. While her focus was on achieving results rather than seeking credit, starting from a lower position enabled her to gain a comprehensive understanding of building management and the intricacies that shape lease negotiations. This knowledge empowered her to make informed decisions for the benefit of both the landlord and the tenants, earning her a reputation as a trusted and capable professional. Mentorship Danet had the privilege of being mentored by a leasing director who recognized the underrepresentation of women in commercial real estate. He encouraged her to identify inspiring figures in the field, leading her to admire Tere Blanca. Danet now works alongside Tere as her partner at Blanca Commercial Real Estate, marking a fulfilling full-circle moment.  Blanca Commercial Real Estate Blanca Commercial Real Estate is proudly women/minority-owned and stands as the foremost independently owned commercial real estate company in Florida. Competing with global brands, they have consistently secured over 30% market share for the past six to seven years, solidifying their position as a formidable presence in South Florida. The International Women's Forum The International Women's Forum (IWF) is a prestigious and exclusive network organization comprising over 7,500 exceptional women leaders from 33 countries and 74 local forums. It was established to create a space where women could support and inspire each other's successes. Founded in 1974 in New York, the organization was born out of the need for a platform that provided professional and personal support to women breaking glass ceilings and achieving significant milestones. It has a diverse membership, including Presidents, Prime Ministers, astronauts, philosophers, and professionals from various industries worldwide. The IWF believes that diversity is its strength in all aspects, fostering a sense of unity among its members and enabling them to thrive collectively. The pandemic opened the floodgates in South Florida The floodgates opened in South Florida during the pandemic as people's perspectives and behaviors shifted. Initially, there were concerns about the worldwide impact of the lockdown and the transition to remote work. However, the situation led many executives and professionals to realize they owned vacation or winter homes in South Florida. They started migrating to the region, knowing that they could work from anywhere as long as they had a stable Internet connection and access to communication tools like Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet.  South Florida is experiencing significant growth South Florida is experiencing significant growth and remains an attractive market, despite the ongoing trend of working remotely. Many corporations in the South Florida region have downsized their office spaces, leading to available vacancies, which have been absorbed quickly by numerous new companies entering the market. High-quality office spaces, particularly Class A properties, have an impressively low vacancy rate of less than 10%.  South Florida has the advantage of being positioned as a direct connection to Latin America, South America, the Caribbean, and Europe.  The advice Danet would give to her younger self: Be proactive in seeking opportunities because they can lead to career advancement.  Work hard and maintain your integrity to build trust with others. Be honest and transparent because people like to work with those they can trust.  Never give up and follow your gut instincts.  Be nimble and be ready to change course when necessary.  Do not get stuck in your ways.  Maintain a positive attitude. Always be willing to take on new challenges and find solutions. The uncertain future of commercial real estate Changing interest rates have led to some uncertainty regarding the future of commercial real estate. Despite those concerns, Danet is optimistic and believes the situation may not become as dire as some anticipate. She advises people to make the most of the situation until 2025 because credit markets may improve significantly by then and banks prefer finding solutions to make things work instead of repossessing buildings. Daring Self-Leadership & The Nature Connection
#36 Ellen Snee on how to claim your authority

Daring Self-Leadership & The Nature Connection

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 8, 2021 54:15

Ellen Snee has worked at the forefront of women's leadership development for more than 25 years. But for the first 18 of those years, the front line of leadership wasn't an Ivy League MBA program or a high-end consulting firm: It was an international order of Catholic nuns.During her time in the order, Ellen was surrounded by smart, educated, committed, and fun women who held roles of authority that were uncommon for women in the 1970s. She gained a number of essential — and, happily, transferable — skills: How to discern a call or deep desire, how to work collaboratively with other women, and how to be a savvy operator within male hierarchies. This experience laid the foundation for Ellen's guiding passion: to become an expert in women's leadership development and to change the world one woman at a time.  Ellen left the convent while still in graduate school, receiving her EdD in Human Development and Psychology from Harvard University in 1994. She turned the conceptual frameworks from her dissertation on women in roles of authority into the launch of a successful consulting firm, Fine Line Consulting. Before long, she arrived in the corporate sector running leadership and coaching programs for executive women in Fortune 500 companies such as Pfizer, Schwab, Marriott, Goodyear and many others. For 15 years she provided one-to-one coaching to high potential and executive level women across the country.A move to California in 2001 led to work in Silicon Valley at the major tech companies such as Apple, Cisco, KPG, and Citrix. In 2009 Ellen was hired by global technology company VMware as VP Leadership Development and Organizational Consulting. She went on to lead Global Talent Development and in 2013 launched VMwomen, a business initiative designed to attract, retain, develop, and advance talented women. She has spoken extensively at corporate conferences including the Conference Board, Catalyst, California Governors Association, Marriott, Pfizer, Panasonic, Amgen, as well as Boston College, University of Michigan and Presidio Business Schools. Ellen is a member of the International Women's Forum, an invitation-only organization of global women leaders. She is an advisor to She Can and Rise Up, organizations that empower young women in Africa and Asia to become leaders. She is a global advisor for How Women Lead and a Limited Partner with How Women Invest venture fund. Ellen is the author of Lead: How Women in Charge Claim Their Authority (She Writes Press), in which she shares her wisdom and experience with all talented women seeking to accelerate their careers. Lead differs from other management and leadership books in several important ways. The locus of authority throughout is women's experience within 3 vital perspectives: personal, relational, and systemic. Ellen's Self-Others-Systems model recognizes that women are always in simultaneous relationships with themselves, others, and the systems in which they live and work. All of these relationships overlap and interact dynamically when someone exercises their leadership in a role of authority. Full of insights, examples, and stories, Lead is firmly grounded in psychological research. She has her experiences and illustrated them in such a way as to be both inspiring and instructive to women on their way up. Along the way, Ellen urges women to find and speak with their unique voice and claim their personal power. In 2015 Ellen returned to the work she loves, accelerating the career advancement of talented women through executive coaching. Based in the San Francisco Bay area, she continues to coach and advise women leaders and executives around the world, and to speak at companies, academic institutions and leadership conferences.

In merging and growing her agency, Elizabeth has learned many important skills and strategies that have helped her excel in her role, including business time management tips that have allowed Elizabeth and her team to get more done and really differentiate themselves from their competitors throughout Maine. The Importance of Time Management No matter what kind of agency you run or what industry you operate in, time management is a crucial business skill that you must develop to be a successful leader. Especially in today's highly competitive and ever-shifting market, time management is one of the crucial ingredients you need to be able to swiftly adapt your business to overcome its challenges, especially in the age of pandemic. One of the biggest business time management tips Elizabeth shared during our conversation is the importance of focusing on the right priorities. It can be very easy to get distracted by the little things and lose sight of the big picture. As Elizabeth explained, her organization at one point had a bookkeeper who was extremely focused on tracking and managing all of the small office expenses, down to how many paperclips the team was going through. However, the bookkeeper was spending so much time on the little expenses that she wasn't getting all of the billing done. She lost track of the big picture stuff by wasting too much time on less important priorities… and this in turn impacted the overall success of the agency. Business Time Management Tips for Moving the Needle One of the key strategies Elizabeth employs is that she takes time out each week to make a fresh list of major priorities. It isn't a simple “to-do” list but rather a high-level view of her week and where she can best spend her limited time. At the end of each evening, Elizabeth writes down the three most important things she needs to accomplish the next day, and the next morning she works hard to ensure that those three key priorities are accomplished before noon. This way, Elizabeth is preventing herself from losing track of the things that matter amidst the many small things that are trying to shift her attention away throughout the day. I hope you enjoy this week's episode of the Progressive Agency podcast with Elizabeth Sutherland. Her business time management tips and thoughts on vision and risk-taking are sure to help you in your own work. Spurred by heightened activism in 2020 against persistent racism in the U.S., many business leaders are engaged in a reckoning of their own policies, behaviors and corporate culture to determine how those might be contributing to systemic inequity and exclusion. Marsha Sampson Johnson, a leading diversity advocate and veteran corporate leader, has advice for those undertaking this work. “Diversity and inclusion can never just be a program. It can never be a department. If it is not incorporated into every aspect of the organization, it will never be successful.” Sampson Johnson, a retired senior executive from Fortune 200 energy giant Southern Company, has had an extraordinary career as an executive, mentor, writer and international speaker. In this trenchant conversation with Futuro Health CEO Van Ton-Quinlivan, she shares insights gained from decades of providing leadership in HR, Talent Management and Diversity, discusses the impact of the pandemic on women in the workforce, and touches on the value of leadership development programs such as those sponsored by the International Women's Forum where she spent many years as a Global Director.
