On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with chocolatier and chocolate educator Ruth Kennison of The Chocolate Project. Honey represents a sweet Jewish New Year! Why not kick off the calendar year by indulging in chocolate. Just make sure it's the good kind. “When you're using really good chocolate, it just elevates everything,” explains Kennison, who turned a life-long love of chocolate into her fourth career. “I thought I'd never had any artistic bone in my body; I was an organizer and a production assistant and all sorts of things,” she says. “And I realized, this form of art combines food, chocolate, and art.” After her pastry certification and the decision to focus on chocolate, Kennison took a trip to Paris, which led to an origin trip to Mexico. There, Kennison met farmers, saw cacao trees and learned how chocolate was processed from bean to bar. “Chocolate comes from a fruit [that] grows only 10 to 20 degrees above and below the equator … so it grows in West Africa, Asia, Central America, South America and Mexico,” she explains. “When you open it, [the] white stuff is fruit and it tastes like lychee, and then inside of it are the little cocoa beans that need to be fermented to be made into chocolate.” The craft chocolate and bean-to-bar movement have made good chocolate more accessible than ever. “Bean-to-bar makers [are] roasting the beans very low and slow, so you're getting the pure natural flavors of the bean, similar to wine,” she says. “And when that batch of cacao goes away, you'll never have that exact bar again.” Once you have quality chocolate, there are plenty of things you can make. Kennison likes to use all parts of the cacao, which includes the cocoa nibs. For instance, Kennison loves vanilla soft serve ice cream with homemade caramel sauce, cocoa nibs, and sea salt. She also makes double chocolate chip cookies, and dark chocolate truffles, which you can adapt by adding different flavors. “It can be a coffee chocolate truffle by steeping coffee in your cream,” she explains. “I just made a London fog truffle with Earl gray and vanilla.” Ruth Kennison talks about her chocolate-centric career journey, the Jewish-chocolate connection, and the basics of the bean-to-bar movement. She also shares tips on how to identify quality chocolate, as well as some of her favorite chocolate recipes, including dark chocolate truffles, which you can find at JewishJournal.com/podcasts. A former Playboy and Maxim model, Kelsey Turner, 31, is currently serving a 10 to 25-year sentence in a Nevada state prison for her involvement in the death of 71-year-old Dr. Thomas Burchard, a prominent child psychiatrist whose body was discovered in the trunk of her car near Las Vegas. Turner, who had a tumultuous relationship with Burchard, [BURR-chard] was described as the driving force behind the tragic events that led to the doctor's death. Burchard, who had been financially supporting Turner, was killed following a heated argument. Clark County prosecutors revealed that Turner and her then-boyfriend, Jon Logan Kennison, 32, brutally beat the doctor to death before leaving his body in the trunk of Turner's car on the outskirts of Lake Mead. Kennison, who played a significant role in the killing, previously pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 to 45 years in prison. Diana Nicole Peña, a former roommate of the couple, was initially charged with murder but later pleaded guilty to accessory to murder, insisting she was not involved in the actual killing. Peña became a key witness in the case, providing chilling details of the crime and its aftermath. In a re-aired episode of ABC's "20/20," Peña recounted the terrifying moments leading up to Burchard's death. She described how Turner became enraged after discovering photos and messages on Burchard's phone, which led to the fatal altercation. Peña recalled witnessing Kennison raise a bat, although she did not see him strike the doctor. She suggested that Turner encouraged the violence, a theory supported by prosecutors. Peña also shared how she urged the couple to take the injured doctor to the hospital, but instead, he was left to die. According to Peña, Burchard, sensing his imminent demise, asked for his jacket and confided, "They're going to kill me." Burchard's tragic end was further compounded by the discovery of his body days later, stuffed inside the trunk of Turner's blue Mercedes-Benz C300. The car, abandoned on Nevada State Route 147, was reported by a passerby who noticed it parked alone with a broken window. Burchard was well-known for his work as a child psychiatrist, often entertaining his patients with magic tricks. He had a history of financially supporting women he met online, a habit that ultimately led to his downfall. His longtime girlfriend, Judy Earp, revealed that Burchard had spent nearly $300,000 on Turner over several years and described her as "as evil as Charles Manson." Turner entered an Alford plea in November 2022, accepting the sentence for second-degree murder while maintaining her innocence. The plea deal ensures she will be eligible for parole after serving a minimum of 10 years. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? While Trevor Kennison may never become a household name, he caught the attention of the snow world last week during the Kings and Queens of Corbet’s event. Travis Rice and Caite Zeliff may have won the money but “Riders Choice” winner, Trevor Kennison, started a new life. Five years ago Trevor had a life-altering injury that put a hard stop to life as he knew it. While Trevor doesn’t know what his future will hold, what he did on his sit-ski in Jackson Hole last week...has the opportunities rolling in. It will be fun to see what he does with them. The Weight of Glory Dr. Rev. Mike Kennison Matthew 17:1-8 1 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. 3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4 And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and shave no fear.” 8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. Politically Incorrect Jesus Rev. Dr. Kennison Matthew 15:21-28 21 And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” 23 But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.” 24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” 26 And he answered, “It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.” 27 She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.” 28 Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly. The Heart of the Matter Rev. Dr. Mike Kennison Matthew 13:44-46 44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it. The Parable of the Sower Rev. Dr. Mike Kennison Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. 2 And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach. 3 And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. 4 And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. 5 Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, 6 but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. 7 Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. 8 Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9 He who has ears, let him hear.” “Hear then the parable of the sower: 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. 20 As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. 22 As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 23 As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.” Scripture quotations are from the Holy Bible, English Standard Version, © 2001 Crossway Bibles, a division of Good News Publishers. There was once a paddle that instilled fear in the hearts of Kennison children everywhere... that paddle had a name: Big Red.
What do you get when you add teenagers, a 6 year old, a bowl of salsa and one of the Kennison boys? Evil. Plain and simple.
