Thirty years ago, David Foster Wallace reported “The String Theory,” an essay about a pro tennis player named Michael Joyce. No, Joyce wasn't as good as his fellow Americans (Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Michael Chang). But what Joyce taught Wallace — the best writer of his generation, and a former junior player himself — turned into the greatest tennis essay of all time. Today, in the middle of the U.S. Open, Pablo sits down with Michael Joyce — who's since become a coach to players like Maria Sharapova — and they dissect the genius and the eccentricities of David Foster Wallace, who died in 2008. In episode #06 of NAPFA Nation, Lydia Sheckels, CFP®, CLU®, ChFC®, of Wescott Financial Advisory Group, shares highlights from her career in financial services, including how she became fee-only financial planner, and why she decided to eventually join NAPFA and raise her hand for service/leadership roles within the fiduciary community that would come back to help her in unexpected ways. While she set out to simply be of service, the surprise to her was that she learned new things and became a better financial planning practitioner and leader within Wescott, the Registered Investment Advisor and wealth management firm that would eventually become her beloved career home base. Sheckels shares: How participating in the fee-only community helped shape her career and created a profound sense of purpose How fellow NAPFA pioneers such as Michael Joyce, Judy Lau, and Marjorie Fox – among others – lead the charge in NAPFA's early days Why she is so encouraged by the fiduciary movement and the growth of commission-free wealth management and financial planning firms nationwide How established firms can help the next generation of financial planners as they eagerly seek to join the fiduciary community Key points: When Sheckles joined Wescott, it was “a tiny firm” and the term “fiduciary” was hardly used in financial planning circles. Today, Wescott is one of the larger wealth management firms in the fiduciary community and now the terms “fee-only” and “fiduciary” are used widely in financial planning circles, by personal financial journalists, and professors who are training up the next generation of financial planners, investment advisors, and wealth managers. In addition to the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors, the fiduciary standard is now the “mother standard” for an array of professional organizations such as Alliance of Comprehensive Planners, XY Planning Network, and the Garrett Planning Network. As NAPFA celebrates its 40th anniversary, this podcast with Sheckels is one you won't want to miss. Special Note: In 2023, we rebranded the NAPFA podcast with a new album cover and series title: NAPFA Nation. We are shifting our monthly episodes to bring you inspiring conversations and key insights from leaders in the Fee-Only financial planning profession. Marie Swift, Founder and CEO of Impact Communications, will continue on as host, interviewing a variety of NAPFA members and professionals. You will still be able to find on this channel the 32 Mindset Mastery episodes with respected fiduciary financial planners and allied advocates who are committed to accomplishing great things as they master their own mindset and continue to serve their clients in the best ways possible. Each year the Canon Law Society of America presents its distinguished Role of Law Award to an individual considered to be outstanding in the field of canonical science. The By-Laws of the Society directs the Board of Governors to select a person who demonstrates in his or her life and legal practice the following characteristics:   Embodiment of pastoral attitude, commitment to research and study, participation in the development of law, response to needs or practical assistance, facilitation of dialogue and the interchange of ideas within the Society and with other groups.   These qualifications are a concise re-statement of the constitutionally-expressed purposes of the Society.   The person to whom this award is given is viewed by us as one who embodies all that we, as members of the Society hold dear, as one to whom we can look for guidance and inspiration. Such an official statement alone is perhaps the greatest honor that can be bestowed on anyone – to be selected by one's friends and peers as outstanding among them.   Our recipient this year has the unique honor of being the first (and I think, the only) chaplain to take the DePaul University men's basketball team to an NCAA Final Four game.   He was ordained a presbyter in 1976. He received a licentiate in canon law in 1977 and earned his doctorate in canon law at the Catholic University of America in 1992. He has taught canon law at DeAndreis Seminary located outside of Chicago, at St. Thomas Seminary in Denver, and Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis. He has served as a judge in the tribunals of the Archdioceses of Chicago, Denver, and St. Louis. He was judicial vicar of the Metropolitan Tribunal of the Archdiocese of St. Louis and the Tribunal of the Diocese of Memphis.   The recipient is a past president of the CLSA. He was chair of the Religious Law Committee and co-editor of Procedural Handbook for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. He also has served as chair of the Committee on Convention Planning and has presented several times at the Annual Convention. He currently serves as a canonical consultant and as an advocate in ecclesiastical proceedings. He continues to advise several institutes of consecrated life and societies of apostolic life.   The 2021 Role of Law Award goes to Vincentian Father Michael Joyce, the Congregation of the Mission.

When studies started showing that fishers (think big weasel) were declining in northern Minnesota, the DNR and wildlife biologists got concerned. Michael Joyce, wildlife biologist with the NRRI got a team together, built 100 den boxes out of wood, strapped the 52-lb. boxes to frame packs and schlepped them out into the wilderness in hopes that with safe places to raise their families, fisher populations could start making a comeback. Thanks to the miracle of trail cams, Mike and his team can keep an eye on the den boxes. Every couple of months, they head out to the trail cams, retrieve the SD cards and put in new ones, then head back to look at the images. And what they're finding is that lots of forest denizens enjoy hanging out inside, outside, and on top of the den boxes, plus they're being used as toys, lunch, and places for romantic interludes, as well.

When Maria Sharapova beat Serena Williams in the 2004 Wimbledon final, few could have predicted the path their rivalry would take over the next fifteen years. In this episode, we discuss why Sharapova’s run aged 17 wasn’t completely out of the blue and the way in which Serena was slightly under prepared, and Mary Carillo explains what impressed her most about Sharapova’s performance on that day and why she felt Serena was surprised by Sharapova’s level. Then, we look more closely at the development of the Serena-Sharapova “unrivalry”, including an analysis of the language Sharapova used to frame herself against Serena in her autobiography. Finally, Sharapova’s coach of seven years, Michael Joyce, gives an insight into the Maria he knows, the pressure she was under after winning Wimbledon aged 17, and why he thinks Serena came to dominate their matches. The Tennis Podcast is presented by Catherine Whitaker and David Law, and features Matt Roberts. Michael Joyce came up deep in the Southern California tennis scene: brushing shoulders with the rich and infamous; playing tennis with fabled champions; and receiving instruction from legendary coaches. After an illustrious junior career in which he finaled Junior Wimbledon and won Kalamazoo, Joyce went pro and caught the attention of David Foster Wallace who subsequently wrote one of the seminal articles about tennis about him. As a player, he beat Courier, Becker, Kafelnikov and many more. But he’s probably best known as one of the top elite coaches on the tour.  He’s worked with Azaranka, Konta, Pegula and Bouchard. And he coached Maria Sharapova through three major championships and to #1 in the world. The man has so many stories and so much insight we just couldn’t fit it into a single episode. So here is part 1 where Joyce discusses the machinations of coaching at the highest level. He tells us what it was like to grow up with a tennis obsessed father who learned tennis in Plummer Park from legends like Bill Tilden and Pancho Gonzales. And he shares the story of what exactly happened with him and Genie Bouchard. We met up with Michael during the US Open where he was coaching Timea Babos the Hungarian best known for her #1 doubles ranking. (Recorded August 26, 2019.
