Every year CES, organized by the Consumer Technology Association, takes place annually in Las Vegas each January, and is immediately followed by NRF: Retail's Big Show in New York City the following week. While CES primarily focuses on consumers and personal technology, NRF is a business-to-business (B2B) retail-oriented event. Joining Rob to discuss and compare their experiences at CES 2024 and NRF 2024 is Armand Rabinowitz, Vice President Digital and Technology at Levy Restaurants. Both Rob and Armand have been attending both events for well over a decade. Describing why it's important to attend, Armand notes “as there's more and more technology required to operate any business, especially the foodservice business, it's important to see what's out there and cross compare what all these vendors are doing and how they can help your business.”At CES, transparent LED display technologies were a technology that Armand took note of. These transparent displays are not necessarily new to CES, but sometimes technology exists before its time. Wearables (eyewear, watches), smart ovens and nutritional measurement AI were also notable technologies at CES this year.Continuing on, the pair talk about their experience at NRF 2024. Despite its title, NRF is indeed a technology-focused show that includes far more than traditional retail. This year, autonomous stores were a big feature in many of the halls, and there was the debut of the Foodservice Innovation Zone where the IFBTA as the NRF's Concept. To stay informed about the latest technologies made an impact at CES or NRF, or that may soon impact the foodservice and hospitality industries, tune in to this episode of Accelerate.Visit Savor.fm for more podcasts Learn More about the Restaurant Power Index Report

Andy Lansing has worked at Levy Restaurants for the past 34 years, and has been CEO since 2004. He came about that role via the unusual route of being hired as the company’s general counsel. Being a naturally curious person, he poked his head around different aspects of the business and learned so much about the company’s operations that he became chief operating officer in 1995 after spending four years as its executive vice president. Levy is now a far-reaching company, as well as a division of the Compass Group, that operates more than 200 venues, including restaurants, but also many stadiums and other event spaces, and it also provides the foodservice at music festivals and similar celebrations. The company is also doing some celebrating of its own with the 20th anniversary of Jake Melnick’s Corner Tap, an everybody-knows-your-name type of tavern in Chicago. Lansing discussed that milestone, as well as the keys to its success, including understanding, as he puts it, that ‘It’s more exciting to eat in a bar than drink in a restaurant.” He also shares tips on how to hire and retain employees and why running restaurants makes Levy so successful at running the foodservice in stadiums.

He played with Rory McIlroy, Lee Trevino and former Women’s British Open winner Georgia Hall. They were joined at the end by Jack Nicklaus. He wasn’t playing. Nicklaus is in the gray old town to become an honorary citizen of St. Andrews. That led to a lot of laughs and memories. McIlroy says it was a dream to be part of it all. Golf – PGA/LIV – Report: DOJ inquiring about antitrust in PGA-LIV dispute The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the U.S. Department of Justice is now interested in the dispute between the PGA Tour and the Saudi-funded LIV Golf series. The Journal reports that players’ agents have received inquiries from the Justice Department’s antitrust division. They involve the PGA Tour regulations on players competing in other events and the tour’s decision to suspend those who played. The Justice Department had no comment. The tour says in a statement the investigation was not unexpected. It cites a Federal Trade Commission investigation in the 1990s in believing it will prevail again. USA Soccer – Mewis scores late, US women top Mexico 1-0 at W Championship Kristie Mewis scored in the 89th minute to break a stalemate and the United States beat Mexico 1-0 at the CONCACAF W Championship. The U.S. won Group A in the eight-team tournament and will face Costa Rica in the semifinals. The Americans had already qualified for the 2023 Women’s World Cup as one of the top two teams in their group. Mexico’s Lizbeth Ovalle was sent off with a red card for a foul on Rose Lavelle in the 73rd minute. In other tournament action, Jamaica beat Haiti 4-0, Canada beat Costa Rica 2-0 and Panama beat Trinidad and Tobago 1-0. Tennis – Analysis: Unvaccinated Djokovic’s pursuit of Nadal on hold Novak Djokovic overtook Roger Federer in the Grand Slam title standings and moved within one of Rafael Nadal by claiming his 21st major trophy at Wimbledon. Now Djokovic is headed off to vacation. And what no one knows right now is how long his break will be or when he might be able to resume trying to accumulate Slam hardware. He is not vaccinated against COVID-19 and repeated Sunday after beating Nick Kyrgios for a seventh championship at the All England Club that he will not get the shots. As things stand now, that means Djokovic will not be able to enter the United States to play in the U.S. Open in August. It's all about the fan experience.  This week's guest, Jessica Fickenscher, is the Chief Experience Officer for Speedway Motorsports and makes it her daily mission to ensure race fans at their eleven premier NASCAR facilities have an experience of a lifetime. Speaking of experiences, Jessica has experienced a lot in her 25+ years at Speedway Motorsports.  She first entered the doors as an intern and will probably exit those same doors when she walks into retirement.  Her fans-first initiatives have delivered best-in-class fan experiences and she continues to create ways to make their attendees happy and coming back for more. If the fan experience responsibility wasn't enough, Fickenscher also facilitates capital improvement and property development projects across the company's facilities and oversees their relationship with food service partner, Levy Restaurants.  In addition, she leads business operations as the senior executive for company subsidiaries U.S. Legend Cars which consists of the world's largest producer of fun and affordable race cars, and SMI Properties, a souvenir production and merchandising division. Fickenscher is the managing director of Speedway Children's Charities national chapter and serves as a board member for the Charlotte chapter. Speedway Children's Charities is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides funding for non-profit organizations in the Charlotte community that meet the direct needs of children. Jessica chats with host Amanda Busick about how she juggles so many responsibilities while maintaining a family life – something that is important to not only Jessica, but to her employer as well. Special thanks to our friends at Covercraft for sponsoring this podcast.
