In this episode, Lisa and Shara discuss:Looking at social work careers in both macro and micro settings. The educational and licensing path to becoming an LCSW. The three tracts of a Social Work Master's program.Tips for preparing, taking, and succeeding on the licensure exams. Key Takeaways: Social workers work in every aspect of life, from birth to death, with individuals, organizations, and governments. To qualify for an LCSW, your student would need a Master's in Social Work. An undergraduate degree in social work is not required, though it can help build foundational knowledge and set them up for success in the graduate program.Begin with the end in mind when considering social work as a college path and career, as it will take additional time in school, which costs more. A doctorate is not required to work in social work unless your student ultimately wants to work in research or academia. “When people hear social workers, they think of just child welfare. And we do so much more than that - you can find us in every facet of society.” – Shara RuffinAbout Shara Ruffin: Shara is an independently licensed clinical social worker and former psychotherapist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She holds a Bachelor's degree in social work from Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania and a Master's degree in social work from Howard University School of Social Work. In this episode you will learn the following: Childhood development starts in the womb and is critically important until age 2 to set the foundation for who your baby can possibly be. Your baby is communicating with you through every sound they make. The parents' role is to communicate back. The games parents play with their newborns each have a learning function to them. It's important that parents discuss what is priority to them in how they raise their child before having children. Consistency provides a safe and secure environment for children. Each parent's daily routine is important when there is co-parenting in two households due to divorce. Don't Compete! Each co-parent is different and each co-parent has value in what they can provide to their children. The Oliiki app is designed to create daily interactions with children up to 24 months old that explain the developmental skill the baby is learning. Oliiki is grounded in science. UCL Institute of Education carried out a randomised controlled trial on the Oliiki app and found that parents using the Oliiki app after only 4 weeks had higher parental self-efficacy, (more confident in their parenting) compared to the active control trial. This is significant because high parental self-efficacy is connected with low post-natal depression, low infant mental health issues and high home learning environments. #coparenting #parenting #education #play #communication #divorce #podcast #divorcepodcast #amicabledivorce #prenatalcommunication #childhooddevelopment #Oliikiapp #therapy #consistency #newborns #familytherapy @ClareStead @JenJackson About Clare Stead Clare Stead, Creator and Founder of the Oliiki app is an e-Learning specialist, Education researcher and primary teacher. Anne Helen Peterson, the writer responsible for the popular substack “culture study” is responsible for a lot of writing that makes you think in a sneaky way, like her celebrity profiles that serve as cultural mirrors. She wrote a piece about Armie Hammer that asks why Hollywood gave this guy so many chances that I think about a lot. (I've linked to that in the show notes), She's written about work culture and its expansion into the rest of our lives on her substack and in the book she co-authored with Charlie Warzel titled “Out of Office.”She's also covered the culture of domestic labor, particularly how it impacts women today as they care for their children and their aging parents. In a piece titled, “forced to care” (which is a reference to a book by Evelyn Nakano Glennm by the same name) Anne stated the thing that I've been thinking about in not so many words as I considered having a family in this pandemic-y world. “What we have, then, is a caregiving paradigm — not just for kids, but for elders and other adults — that relies heavily on proximity to family and presumed willingness. For those without those things, there are two options: 1) pay a lot of money for help, or 2) figure it out your damn self.”And that mental exercise is something that a lot of current and prospective parents go through as they're creating a plan to care for the human lives they're responsible for. We're in the middle of a deep dive on deciding to grow your family or not. And in this episode, we're covering the mental side of parenting, from making the decision (and yes that counts deciding NOT to grow your family), to communicating with a partner in parenting if you have one, to setting boundaries. And more and more American humans are choosing not to add to their families as the world feels more uncertain and expensive. Birthrates were already dropping before 2020 they'd been falling for 6 straight years, but 9 months into the pandemic in December of 2020, the New York Times reported births had declined by about 8 percent - the steepest drop yet.The hard truth of the pandemic is the erasure of systems that allowed caretakers to also be in the workforce. For the sake of stats, we're going to talk about female caretakers taking on an increased burden, but I know that plenty of different folks who are the primary caretaker have been rocked by these same factors. Before the pandemic - in January of 2020 - women achieved a very important milestone - they made up more than half of the workforce. Cut to today, 56 percent of American women are working for pay, the lowest level since 1986. Often to take on childcare or eldercare without any safe or affordable options, women left their jobs to do that work. And I haven't even started on the lack of paid maternity leave and the complete dearth of options for people like me who are entrepreneurs. Couple that with the fact that we're still hearing stories about parents going back to work immediately, or taking a zoom from labor and delivery and we are being sent a very convoluted message - that mom's are important, but we won't do anything to make their lives or recovery easier. That moms are important, but not more important than the workforce. Here's the thing, I could and can talk all day about the systemic problems around growing a family, but you walk by me with a baby and forget it. I love those squishy little humans. I want to have a conversation with them about why they think grass grows, read them a story and help name their stupid stuffed animals. That's because I know that I would love a child if my husband and I choose to have one. I tear up at the thought of it. We're genetically programmed to bond with these tiny humans. Generally, that bond brings a new purpose to the lives of their parents. But purpose from that bond does not negate the stress we just talked about. A study from Princeton University and Stony Brook University found that parents and non-parents have similar levels of life satisfaction, but parents experienced both more daily joy and more daily stress than non-parents.It's a confusing existence. But for those listening who have always wanted a family, the changing work world and evolving systems of care might not change anything for you except for the conversations you're having with your loved ones. The thing I want this episode to do for YOU, no matter who you are is to give you tools to advocate for your mental health and language to ask for help if you experience very normal, very treatable things like PPD and PPA. And Postpartum Depression, NPR reports, impacts an estimated 1 in 7 pregnant women and new mothers, but less than 20% get treated. That's why we spoke to Tera Gurney for this week's episode on the mental health impacts of the decision. Tera is a Licensed Clinical Social worker who focuses on working with parents and survivors of sexual violence and she comes at this topic from a practical, nonjudgemental place. She and I talk about mental health in three distinct phases, before making the decision to grow your family. The time while you wait for baby after taking the plunge, and after the baby arrives. She shares tools for diving into decision making if you have a partner in parenting and tools for talking to your family if you're feeling pressured. And to quote our guest this week, “you are the best parent for your child” and a quote from me, that I say to my husband, “the best decision is the one you make.”Resources: Find Tera Gurney online and book a workshop with herSubscribe to and support the Culture Study, a Discord by Anne Helen Petersen“Out Of Office” by Charlie Warzel and Anne Helen PetersenTen Long Years of Trying to Make armie Hammer Happen, Anne Helen Petersen for Buzzfeed NewsThe New York Times, More Kids? Hey members! First and foremost, THANK YOU. Your willingness to support this podcast early has been an incredible sign that maybe, just maybe, we're on the right track with the message of the show. We're working hard on our end to make sure we don't let you down. It's a big day. We're launching this new podcast. If you haven't ever launched a podcast, it takes a mix of audacity, old-fashioned spirit, and a tolerance for no small margin of public speaking terror to get the job done. But who are we kidding… of course you've launched a podcast. Everyone has a podcast now. My name is Pete Wright and I'm your chaperone. As such, I write little letters to you, like this one, as well as introduce episodes, giving you a sense of what you're going to experience on the show. As a subscriber, you'll hear my voice from time to time, and as a patron, a good bit more as I join Dodge in our private Afterthoughts series. But this is Dodge's show. That's Dr. Dodge Rea, Psy.D., Integrative Clinical Psychologist and co-founder of The Lotus Center, an integrative health center in Nashville. He's been one of my best friends for nearly three decades. I believe you'll soon come to see why he's so well loved by clients, colleagues, and old friends alike. In our grand episode one, we're going to introduce you to Ben Rea. Ben is a Licensed Clinical Social worker and co-founder of Healthy Minds, his practice in San Luis Obispo, California. He's a phenomenal psychotherapist in his own right but also Dodge's younger brother, which makes our first episode that much more special for all of us. Ben joins Dodge for a conversation on ACT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, plus a round of “where was that picture” and other lessons learned from their childhood home. A few notes on the episode. First, we recorded the thing without the intention of releasing it to the public. It was a test. But in the same way that you can't return all the feathers to a pillow in a windstorm, we just couldn't figure out a way to recreate what Dodge and Ben captured in their first conversation. Call it beginner's luck if you will, but something unexpected happened that demonstrated change far better than anyone could have explained it. I encouraged them both to take a risk and put listeners on notice: This will be be a remarkably brave and authentic podcast. Dodge is in this with you. Second, this episode is chock full of gems that have branded themselves on my psyche in the months since we recorded. On reflection, they all revolve around the fascinating idea that we continue to experience our lives through the entrenched stories we tell ourselves, and only in moving toward the pain we want to run from do we find the freedom to change it. This is something the brothers weave their way through in the course of their conversation and the lessons — at least for me — have been powerful. I hope they are equally so for you. Thanks for joining us on this journey. We're so deeply gratified you're here. — Pete Links & Notes Ben Rea, LCSW About ACT — Contextual Science

Lori Brown LISW-S, LICDC and Jennifer Schwirian LISW-S are social workers. They are Licensed Clinical Social workers and they work with a population of patients who have significant mental illness. As part of their work they have developed a deep understanding of trauma. Not the crash your car into a bridge piling trauma, but trauma emotional trauma that occurs in childhood from neglect, un-met needs and other emotional insults that can significantly shape behavior in adulthood. In this series we are going to look at the topic of Trauma Informed Care. This is a topic that is controversial. There are some people who think that trauma in this context is overplayed. There are others that don’t think enough attention is being paid to the impact of childhood and developmental trauma on adult behavior and mental health. So we tackle this with a discussion and let you have the opportunity to think about it and make some conclusions. In this first episode we discuss what a Clinical Social Worker is and what a Psychologist is and also what a Counselor is as far as educational requirements and what they do. Bette Galen has been a Licensed Clinical Social worker for 16 years. Her specialties include – women’s reproductive health, trauma, and life transitions. Counseling in reproductive health issues includes the emotional, psychological, and relational difficulties that occur when individuals and couples have unexpected roadblocks to growing their family. She regularly provides consultations, education, and support for individuals and couples pursuing egg, sperm, or embryo donation, those seeking a gestational carrier and those wishing to freeze their eggs for later use. Each month she facilitates a general infertility group and a couple’s infertility group. In addition to working in her private practice, she is a social worker on staff in the Complementary Care department of a prestigious New Jersey practice of Reproductive Endocrinologists. When working with clients who have experienced trauma, be it infertility related, or sexual, physical, or emotional abuse, Bette is informed by many modalities of treatment including but not limited to Internal Family Systems, Pia Mellody’s Post Induction Therapy for Relational Immaturity, and EMDR. As we age and grow, we all face any number of transitions – death or estrangement from loved ones, parenting or childfree living, divorce, or employment changes in these challenging economic times. Learning cognitive strategies to neutralize negative thought patterns, building mind/body techniques to help with relaxation in order to get ‘unstuck’, and learning to set boundaries, manage emotions and expectations, and operating from your ‘best adult self’ can help while transitioning. After many years of working in the fashion business, Bette went back to school for her master’s degree in social work. She had her own difficulty with infertility and is passionate about helping those going through that difficult journey. She is a member of The American Society of Reproductive Medicine, The Mental Health Professional Group of ASRM, a Resolve Therapist, and is certified in Internal Family Systems. http://bettegalenlcsw.com For more information about Michelle, visit www.thewholesomelotus.com For information on the Wholesome Fertility Method online program visit www.thewholesomefertilitymethod.com
