In this week's Born to Watch episode, Matt and Damo dive into a quirky 80s classic that inspired guilty pleasure rewatches and dreams of window display romance: Mannequin (1987). Join the guys as they reminisce about how Kim Cattrall's Emmy and Andrew McCarthy's Jonathan brought a spark of movie magic into their lives. From Matt's pre-teen obsession with Kim Cattrall to Damo's confusion over the movie's inexplicable ancient Egyptian backstory, no stone is left unturned in this Mannequin (1987) Movie Review.Released on February 13, 1987 (nearly 38 years to the day!), Mannequin tells the story of Jonathan Switcher, a struggling artist whose life takes an unexpected turn when his mannequin creation comes to life. Played by Cattrall, Emmy is the dream girl in window dressing form—literally. The duo's escapades in a struggling department store are filled with over-the-top characters, 80s montages, and laugh-out-loud moments, making this film a surreal yet iconic time capsule. As the hosts explore the nostalgia factor, they note the undeniable charm of Andrew McCarthy, a quintessential Brat Pack star. Damo points out that McCarthy's relatable, down-on-his-luck artist is impossible to hate—even when dragging a mannequin around town in plain sight. Kim Cattrall, meanwhile, exudes charisma, foreshadowing her future role as the fearless Samantha in Sex and the City.Of course, the conversation wouldn't be complete without a nod to Mannequin's over-the-top supporting cast. James Spader shines as a sniveling antagonist, while G.W. Bailey (aka Captain Harris from Police Academy) essentially reprises his role as a bumbling authority figure. And then there's Hollywood Montrose, played by Meshach Taylor, whose flamboyant energy adds humour and heart to the film. The soundtrack gets its due praise, with the guys singing the praises (literally) of Starship's Oscar-nominated hit, "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now." Fun fact: the song became one of the biggest singles of 1987, topping charts in both the U.S. and U.K. Yet despite its commercial success, Mannequin was panned by critics. Matt shares a particularly brutal review from Roger Ebert, who described the film as “dead.” Still, Damo counters with evidence of Mannequin's enduring appeal: a 46-week theatrical run and a cult following that persists today. The team breaks down the movie's highlights and low points in the Good, Bad, and Ugly segment. The guys rave about the film's outrageous opening scene set in ancient Egypt, complete with comedic subtitles. However, they can't help but cringe at questionable plot points—like the inexplicable romance centered on store displays and a climactic Benny Hill-style chase through the department store. And let's not forget the scene that drove Damo to rage: Andrew McCarthy casually tossing away a perfectly good choc wedge!Throughout the episode, Matt and Damo strike a balance between affectionate nostalgia and merciless critique. They reflect on how Mannequin epitomises the era's campy charm while acknowledging that its caricatured characters and absurd premise could never fly in today's world of high-concept blockbusters. So, if you're ready for a stroll down 80s memory lane filled with synth scores, big hair, and mannequins that spring to life, this episode is for you. Tune in for laughs, trivia, and some wild tangents about department store nostalgia, robot brothels, and Wilford Brimley's ageless face.Don't miss this blast from the past! After last year's Halloween Fifth Tuesday, many discussions were had about how to celebrate the occasion again in 2024 — but, ultimately, there was only one answer that everybody was definitely 100% on board about and excited for and agreed to without any trouble. Unanimously and in perfect unison, we all chose to revisit our shared childhoods with Double, Double, Toil and Trouble (1993), the made-for-TV movie starring Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. The tiny twins may have been well into building their empire by then (after all, they started as literal infants), but they were still getting used to the acting game, and it showed in their adorable performance as they kept accidentally looking into the camera. That said, they still gave a masterclass in sass, and they held their own amidst stars like Cloris Leachman, Eric McCormack, and Meshach Taylor. On our latest episode of Spooky Tuesday, we're enjoying the autumnal vibes and trying not to get too bogged down in ‘90s era problematic elements as we go on a little adventure and learn the magic words: Jacuzzi jacuzzi!

Here's a guy who has been a Pulitzer-winning columnist, a best-selling novelist, a much sought-after speaker, and guitarist in a garage band that also features Stephen King. It's Dave Barry and his one of a kind career makes him a legend of comedy. From humble beginnings as a beat reporter, Dave eventually became the king of newspaper humor columnists and his affectionately irreverent humor connect with a boomer audience from the start. While he has dialed back his output in recent years, fans still look forward to his annual year in review column and snarky holiday gift guide and he found a new outlet during the pandemic cutting short videos for the Miami Herald filled with the patented Barry wit. Find more Dave Barry below and thanks for sharing our shows. Want more Dave? Dave isn't a standup comic, but his popular keynote speeches are filled with humor nonetheless. Here a slice of Dave talking about one of his favorite topics -- adulthood! https://youtu.be/mlBvneYoH0E Dave's World was a sitcom based loosely on Barry's life, starring Night Court vet Harry Anderson as Dave. This bit features costars Shadoe Stevens and Meshach Taylor on Dave's decision to get a vasectomy.https://youtu.be/iEM69OSqi3A Dave Barry still surfaces from time to time with a special column or video and his dispatches during Covid were classic -- especially this one on America's rarest and most valuable commodity -- TP! https://www.youtube.com/live/w5IE

Comedian and actor Holly Prazoff (Comedy Bang! Bang!) joins to discuss the 1987 romantic comedy MANNEQUIN starring Andrew McCarthy, Kim Cattrall, James Spader, and Meshach Taylor. A loose adaptation of the Pygmalion myth, the Michael Gottleib-directed film tells the story of a department store mannequin inhabited by an ancient Egyptian woman. Though critically dismissed upon its release, MANNEQUIN proved to be a box office success and oft-replayed film on cable TV, earning an Academy Award nomination for its original song, "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" performed by Jefferson Starship. Our conversation with Holly is nowhere near as rigid as the titular mannequin, as we veer into extended diversions covering Sex and the City, And Just Like That..., Pixar's Cars, Canadian radio, Tron, The Fisher King, the Holodeck, American Gigolo, UCB, Tom Cruise, and much much more.
Just a head's up that in this episode, the guys talk about FLDS (and LDS) prophets taking on child brides. The guys start out expressing some frustrations about their preoccupation with sex. Joe questions whether it was brought up as much as it feels like it was, but he still thinks the effect is that it feels like it was brought up all the time. The guys are still bummed that they can't get gay married in the LDS temple yet (ps- they're not gay, which makes them think they have a greater chance of it happening). Joe talks about watching Keep Sweet Pray and Obey (2022) on Netflix. Joe realizes that he's not breaking any new ground, but he wants to point out that there are some pretty big similarities between Jeff Warren and JS. Smith tries his impression from FG, it's not a pleasant character. Joe teases a youtube video about an upcoming chapter. The video features John BTW, and someone else that Joe mistakes for Elohim. Easy mistake? Smith is excited about The Rehearsal (2022) which is a Nathan Fielder series streaming on HBO. The guys talk about some of their favorite moments from Nathan For You (2013) which was on comedy central. It can be pretty painful to watch, but there is a heart in there somewhere. It's quite a mini love-fest for NF. What do the guys do during the break? Stare. Joe visits the corrections department about Meshach Taylor. The guys take a minute to mock the idea that the BOM is an historical record for the Jewish people. Smith remembers a news story about Rusty donating a pretty large chunk of money to the NAACP. Smith gets a little confused (or maybe Joe's confused) about letters. Jacob comes in hot in this chapter, even though he sounds a lot like Nephi, and/or JS. Joe tries to gross out the listener with nursing and licking sounds. Joe was distracted by a cicada outside of his window but he didn't lose a chance to tell this praying mantis dad joke. Smith helps elevate everyone to the idea of the true order of praying mantis. Smith points out how Nephi (JS) is being shitty about how easy it is to understand Isaiah from the OT. Are you not being all-the-way obedient to JS's God? What do you expect, love??? God (JS) makes some pretty terrifying threats in this chapter. Joe has a suggestion, like a BOJ-level suggestion, for how the lord can make us drunk on our own blood. This week, we discuss "Mannequin 2: On the Move", which is honestly one of the best sequels we've covered this year. This movie has the perfect 80s/90s feel to it and a great cast that has a young Kristy Swanson, William Ragsdale, Stuart Pankin, Meshach Taylor,, and Terry Kiser absolutely CRUSHING IT! Does this movie have plot holes? Yes, it's like swiss cheese, but it doesn't even matter because it is still hilarious. We discuss kissing mannequins, sexy vs sporty perfume, broadway shows put on by a department store, the german Three Stooges, and more. Collect your various plastic lady parts and prepare to literally turn women into objects as we cringe all over Andrew McCarthy and Kim Cattrall's disappointing relationship in 1987's Mannequin. Why did Roxie get shafted so badly by this movie? Who do we need to punish for the horrible violation that is James Spader's hair? Can we just spend our days drinking cocktails with Estelle Getty and spilling tea with Meshach Taylor? And did Alex just reveal that she's a serial killer? There are no answers, only Ham Spader. Sometimes, iconic characters from a movie become pop culture references that outlast and outshine the movie itself. Sometimes, you'd rent a movie at Blockbuster based on the cover alone. And sometimes, ambitious white women in ancient Egypt or “Hauptmann-Koenig” time travel and teleport into beautiful mannequins in a department store in Philly! In 1987 and 1991, that sometimes and those iconic characters were the namesakes of MANNEQUIN and MANNEQUIN TWO: ON THE MOVE. Whether in the role played by Kim Cattrall in the first outing (playing an Egyptian character - in ancient Egypt) or by Kristy Swanson in the sequel, the female lead of this well-known franchise is a woman hopelessly trapped in a department store window mannequin until a hapless and bumbling (but secretly talented!) handsome guy named Jonathan or Jason arrives to become her instant true love and render the force of life into her immobile body. In both movies, Meshach Taylor plays the indefatigable and fabulous Hollywood Montrose, an out and proud gay man who does window displays at the Prince and Company department store and who helps these men meet their mannequin matches. How moving are Mannequin's representations of women and of “Hollywood” in 2022? Is the Mannequin still vibrant and vivacious - or have time or Egyptian gods or a cursed necklace turned her back into cold, expressionless, painted fiberglass? Also, why don't more movies Have A Dog? Our podcast hosts surveyed every cranny and corridor of Prince and Company by hang glider to answer those questions and revisit these movies. In this episode of "A Conversation With," I sat down with Dorez Douglas. She is an author, poet, and film producer located in Los Angeles, California. She shared many nuggets about the film industry and here is just one of the nuggets she shared: How to tell if you have what it takes to be a filmmaker. "I'll tell you a good first project for filmmakers and most of them don't want to do it because they say, well, I can't tell a story in five minutes. But you should do a five or ten minutes short just to see how it goes and to see what it is that, you know, and what you don't know. And if you can, if at all possible, try to do it write the story in such a way that you need minimal locations should be 1- 2 at the most. Or try to find one location that has different areas, you know, that you can use maybe a backyard or patio or front porch or whatever it is. And you know, or rent an Airbnb, shoot, whatever you're gonna shoot all in that one location, five minutes. Usually, that equals about five pages depending on how much action you have in the story. And if you do that for this is just only for filmmakers to do that. You'll see whether or not you have what it takes. " ================== Dorez Douglas BIO: Dorez Douglas is an author, poet and producer in Los Angeles, California. She got her start as co-executive producer of a children's animated special for ABC-TV. The program, “Jirimpimbira: An African Folktale” aired in 1995 and received a Parents Choice Award. CLOUDY WITNESS: BLESSEDLY ASSURED by Janette JonesBlessed assurance Jesus is mine... Overcomers often find themselves humming this well-known Christian hymn while going through the day-to-day uncertainties of life.Cloudy Witness/Blessedly Assured, tale weaving at its best, takes the reader into the presumptuous world of Etta Mae and Donnie Smith, Tonika and Josh Gibbons, Delilah and Damien Whitman. Included in the mix is fast talking rumormonger, Stephanie Willis. Upon which two of these unsuspecting souls also experience life changing encounters with a clandestine figure clad in white.Cloudy Witness merges two inspirational stage projects together in a most unique way. Hebrews 12:1a NIV "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses...." serves as the focal point. The end result of it all is an awe inspiring work of Christian fiction.Janette is an ordained elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and currently serves as an associate minister at Allen Chapel AME Church in Omaha, Nebraska. As a prior military family, Janette and her husband of forty-eight years, both native North Carolinians, traveled extensively to numerous faraway places as Germany, France, England, and Greece. The Jones' are the proud parents of two adult sons and one daughter with three grandkids. As an accomplished playwright, director and producer Janette's first stage production titled Sistah Girl debuted in 2002. The stage production received rave reviews that led to its eagerly awaited presentation for two years afterward. Its follow up, Sistah Girl Revisited debuted in 2005. Then as a tribute to a beloved deceased cast member, Sistah Girl Now & Again was produced in 2008 at the Witherspoon Concert Hall (Joslyn Art Museum).Cloudy Witness/Blessedly Assured was birthed in 2012 with its long-awaited sequel Finding A Happy Medium followed in 2018. Any questions lacking answers in Cloudy Witness are skillfully remedied well beyond speculation in this rewarding sequel. Janette was a featured personality in the Emmy Award-winning 2009 documentary, ‘An Inaugural Ride to Freedom: The Legacy of a People, a Movement, and a Mission,' an Omowale Akintunde film. The documentary was a depiction of a cross-country bus trip made by college students, and members of the Omaha community to the inauguration of then President Barak Obama. Still, later in 2010, Janette was later cast in Omawale's 2010 film ‘Wigger' featuring Anna Marie Horsford, and Meshach Taylor.Janette's love for floral designing as well as event planning culminated into a home based designing business. Were the window dressings even that good? What are the rules for mannequins? Why do poor people live in dope lofts and throw out ice cream after one bite. Also, the greatest time and place in recorded history is Philadelphia in the 1980s.
1987 is the year and Mannequin is the film this week! In our longest episode ever, Erika and Paul are completely confounded and delighted by this movie, starring Andrew McCarthy, Kim Cattrall and Meshach Taylor. Also, since it comes up, they discuss how high a window they would jump out of for each other. Just normal, expected conversation when one talks about Mannequin. -Erika recommends Pretty In Pink as a palate cleanser, also starring both Andrew McCarthy and James Spader. -Paul points out that Kim Cattrall and Carole Davis both were in an early episode of Sex & the City.

In this episode, Jamie and Doug are giddy to watch a very young River Phoenix act like a middle aged scientist and follow around an adorable baby Ethan Hawke. Sadly, interesting subplots involving Dick Miller and Meshach Taylor go un'explored' and the movie devolves into nonsense during the last third. Also, Amanda Peterson's just hanging around with nothing to do. Gerald AlbrightGerald Albright (born August 30, 1957) is an American jazz saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist. His self-produced music features him on bass guitar, keyboards, flutes, drum programming, and background vocals. Born in Los Angeles, Albright grew up in its South Central neighborhood. He began piano lessons at an early age, even though he professed no great interest in the instrument. His love of music picked up considerably when he was given a saxophone that belonged to his piano teacher. It was further reinforced when he attended Locke High School , a breeding ground for many young West Coast musicians.[citation needed] After high school, he attended the University of Redlandswhere he received a B.S. degree in business management, minoring in music. Already a polished saxophonist by the time he enrolled in college, Albright suddenly switched to bass guitar after he saw Louis Johnson in concert.Immediately after college, Albright began to master his talent by working extensively in the studio with such artists as Anita Baker, Ray Parker, Jr., The Temptations and Olivia Newton-John. A few months after graduating from college, Gerald joined Patrice Rushen, who was in the process of forming her own band, in which he played the saxophone. Later, when the bass player left in the middle of a tour, Albright replaced him and finished the tour on bass guitar. Consequently, he often performed on both instruments. Around the same time, he also began to tour Europe with drummer Alphonse Mouzon. He has also toured with Jeff Lorber, Teena Marie, Quincy Jones, Whitney Houston, Phil Collins, Johnny Hallyday, Anita Baker and many others. In addition to numerous appearances at clubs and jazz festivals, Albright had also been a part of the popular Jazz Explosion tours, which saw him teaming up with contemporary jazz stars like Will Downing, Jonathan Butler, Hugh Masekela, Chaka Khan and Rachelle Ferrell, among others.Albright has also made several television appearances on shows such as A Different World, Melrose Place and BET jazz segments, as well as piloting a show in Las Vegas with Designing Women star Meshach Taylor.Albright was one of the ten featured saxophonists who performed at Bill Clinton's inauguration. He was also featured at the Presidential Summit, as well as several private functions for the President.Albright is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Albright now lives with his family near Denver, Colorado. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Andrew McCarthy and Kim Cattrall star in this smash hit bubblegum romance about a struggling artist who falls in love with a mannequin possessed by a lovelorn ancient Egyptian spirit who turns his life around. James Spader, Estell Getty, and Meshach Taylor have supporting roles in this quintessential 80s fantasy-romance. Does it hold up?
