Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso, presented by our friends at Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. Another disappointing night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium for Atlanta United, losing 1-0 to Philadelphia who go to the top spot in the Eastern Conference with the win. Personally, there were things I really liked about the shape change to play two central midfielders ahead of one holding midfielder and essentially two up top, although Miguel Almirón was essentially in a free role. However, it wasn't good enough on the night, the Union earned a deserved (although unlucky) penalty and converted to win 1-0. It doesn't get any easier for Atlanta United next weekend as they host the team level on points with Philadelphia in FC Cincinnati on Sunday night. Hot take alert, I'm a fan of the LA Galaxy announcing Greg Vanney's extension on Friday even though the team is still winless in regular season play in 2025. The negotiations started after Vanney won MLS Cup last December and were finalized recently. With the amount of injuries the Galaxy have tried to navigate this season, including to their 4 top attackers, a struggle was inevitable. A knee-jerk reaction to move on from Vanney after he rebuilt the club into a successful winning team would be the wrong move in my opinion. Crystal Palace earned their first major trophy by winning the FA Cup 1-0 over Manchester City. That will qualify them for the Europa League next year, their first time in a major European competition. Chelsea's women completed the domestic treble with their FA Cup win over Manchester United that saw USWNT members Catarina Macario score a goal and Naomi Girma marshal the backline to a clean sheet.Napoli and Inter both drew in Serie A yesterday, taking the title down to the wire. Their matches will be played on Friday with Napoli holding a one point advantage in the table. If they finish the night tied at the top of the standings, there will be a one-game playoff for the league title. PSV and Sporting won the Dutch and Portuguese top flight titles over the weekend respectively. Aberdeen defender Jack Mackenzie was hit by a plastic seat thrown by his own fans, intended for Dundee United fans celebrating on the field after their win that qualified them for Europe at the Dons' expense. He was bloodied and required treatment, the SPFL called the act "moronic". The great-great grandson of Ford Motor Company founder Henry Ford has become the majority shareholder of Scottish 2nd division side Livingston. Calvin Ford saw his new team win in their promotion semifinal. They will play either Dundee FC or Ross County for an opportunity to earn promotion to the Scottish Premiership. On the Club World Cup front, reports out of Spain indicate that an unnamed Brazilian club has made a "tempting" offer to Cristiano Ronaldo to join them for the tournament. Al Nassr is not in the event and Ronaldo is out of contract on June 30. Al Nassr also missed out on trophies this season and won't be in the Asian Champions League Elite tournament next season. Real Madrid paid the release clause for Bournemouth's CB Dean Huijsen. They have secured their new manager Xabi Alonso for the tournament, are working to bring in Trent Alexander-Arnold for the event as well, and reports indicate they could execute the buyback clause on Como's Nico Paz in time for the tournament as well. They are still chasing a left back too. New ticket options are available at FIFA.com/tickets along with hospitality opportunities at FIFA.com/hospitality.More Espresso coming tomorrow on the SDH Network.

Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse.  Good preseason win for Atlanta United on Saturday afternoon in Bradenton against New England. Miguel Almirón started and played into the second half for the Five Stripes. Ronny Deila spoke afterwards about Almirón's positioning and wants him to have the freedom on the offensive side but discipline defensively. I think we saw that, overall the defensive side of the team looked good in the win and the offensive chemistry will come with time. Latte Lath could join training this week, Brooks Lennon is back in training already and might ahead of schedule, and Stian Gregersen should be available to play in Wednesday's Bradenton finale against Cincinnati. Cupsets in Britain as Liverpool's race to the quadruple was dashed by Plymouth Argyle, who are on the bottom of the Championship. Their manager went home to celebrate with nachos and Fanta... yes that's what he said. Queen's Park in Scotland went one better, upsetting Rangers after saving a 95th minute penalty and earning a win over the Scottish giant for the first time since 1882.  Atleti were given a dubious penalty in their 1-1 draw with Real Madrid on Saturday. While you might be able to justify the call, it's the kind of call that we shouldn't want to see in games. Barcelona won on the weekend, so La Liga has 3 teams separated by 2 points at the top. Christian Pulisic is tied for the Serie A lead in assists after 2 in Milan's 2-0 win over Empoli. River Plate ended Independiente's unbeaten start to the season in Argentina, while the Uruguayan Clásico finished 1-1 between Peñarol and Nacional. Clubs are still adding players in MLS with the window open into April. On the silly season front, it looks like Eduard Atuesta's move to Orlando is back on. Benjamin Rollheiser is reportedly headed to Botafogo in Brazil as opposed to MLS, but a Botafogo striker could be headed to the LA Galaxy on loan.  More Espresso on Monday on the SDH Network, presented by Oglethorpe University.

In the call, names of experience such as David Ospina, James Rodríguez and Radamel Falcao García and young people such as Jhon Jáder Durán and Santiago Moreno stand out. In the latest episode of Mini Logic, Zeno goes on a little rant about Mino Raiola, Paul Pogba's agent and Daniel Campos (yes, I know his name now), Miguel Almirón's agent. Both agents made some unnecessary comments this season, which could have unsettled the club their clients play for, and even the players themselves. Steve Bruce said it best when he said Campos was "trying to make a fast buck". I'm sure that phrase applies to a lot more agents, including Raiola.  NOTE: I mentioned how Almirón's agent wasn't happy with his playing time. That was a little mistake, it was actually about Newcastle's style of play, which technically is understandable, as Newcastle do play uber-defensive football, and Almirón is a gifted attacking player. But I'm sure they knew that coming in, right? Or did he (Campos) not care then because he was getting his big Premier League payday? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/zfl/message

On a Premier League Saturday when relegation candidates rose to the occasion, Tom returns to Banter where he takes in Newcastle United's dramatic comeback win over Everton with a pair of Magpies supporters: his buddy Jonathan, who fell in love with the Toon despite growing up in Southampton, and Deepak, a Newcastle fan from London visiting New York on business. The three discuss the disappointment of the Mike Ashley era, the sense of dread that comes from being a Newcastle supporter, and the team's improved form since acquiring MLS expat Miguel Almirón. Jonathan also explains why he always supports English clubs in the Champions League, and divulges a dark ritual from his childhood to cope with Newcastle's failures. Tom, meanwhile, can't contain his delight when Southampton storms back to beat Tottenham. Email the show: qualityservicepod@gmail.com Follow Tom on Twitter: @tomkludt Music by Atlantic Thrills
