Welcome back to The Great Metal Debate podcast with a new album review, talking about the Nashville based black metal act Obsidian Shrine. This is the band's 3rd full-length studio album titled Dereliction of Divinity. For some reason, my mind went to that Incantation song "A Once Holy Throne" when I saw the song title "A Vacant Throne" but the two tracks sound nothing alike. Obsidian Shrine is a band who is heavily influenced by Marduk. Marduk was never a stand out to me personally as I feel like other talents in the Norwegian trve kvlt black metal scene have overshadowed them in terms of quality song writing. However, Murmur and Nazgul seem to have a way of making their guitar riffs pop as if they just know exactly how to harness the best elements from 2nd wave black metal like Gorgoroth and Dark Throne but give it a clean studio mix. Since I just blabbed on and on for filler sake, I'll remind you that this first track is called "A Vacant Throne" and if the former album is anything to go by, this one is loud, aggressive and in your face with the screeching banshees for vocals. They keep the raspy screams coming throughout the duration of not just this nearly 6 minute opening but the remaining 5 tracks as well. "A Vacant Throne" begins with the sound of howling wind before the early era Naglfar-esq riff and opening scream rips your face off. The drum work is speedy and unrelenting and the vocals are angry. Not to mention there is a brief but very sweet face melting guitar solo loaded with sweep picking. Next we have the song "Licentious Procession" which brings more vocals that sound even more venomous and you can really feel the seething hatred within the very few words you can actually pick out on the first handful of listens. The main rhythm guitar has a more memorable riff this time around but it's here where I must point out my first critique. I don't hear the bass at all in this music. I'm unsure if the Inquisition approach was intentional but this music could certainly benefit from having the 4 string turned up a little. "Obsolete Ideology" is the third track where this issue continued and in all honesty, it's not a track that I particularly remembered after my first listen but it later grew on me just a little. Still not my favorite track on this new record but it's still a blistering banger nonetheless. "Evil Has Its Day" is my favorite song on this album. As someone who thoroughly enjoys the melodic subgenre the most, it was refreshing to finally hear an undistorted guitar moment where the blast beats finally take a break. The blissfully sinister part comes with the nasally ghoul-like vocal break. Key components like this are what makes me pay the most attention. I wish there were more breaks on this album where different vocal styles or musical compositions come into play. I love the calming guitar riff just after the goblin vocals finish rolling its R's. It's short lived but still a great moment. The 5th track serves as a simple instrumental with long notes and a metronome drumbeat. Its meant to be an intermission or rather a prelude to the final song. Throughout we hear a loud mouthed TVangelist preacher fear mongering to all of his gullible followers. It leads nicely into the final song which happens to be the album title track. "Dereliction of Divinity" kicks off with black metal sound but after the first minute, we get a tempo change that slows to a grinding riff but the vocals stay the same. I'm glad the riff stays like this before the very Kerry King style guitar solo shreds in a quick and chaotic way. It's unfortunate that seconds later, this short album concludes very abruptly. There's no winding down or fading out. It just kinda ... stops. Dereliction of Divinity is an album I strongly recommend to fans of bands like: 1349, Taake, Watain or Sargeist. I'll give my boys a fair score of 6.66/10 rating.

Good afternoon rockers and welcome back to Evil FM and your first blast of metal this week with our playlist compiled for us as usual by Captain Freak-Out himself Nicholas Prom and he's given us some killer tracks for today's episode. Coming up we have Manowar, King diamond, Naglfar, Mayhem, Tactics, Lizzy Borden, Iron Maiden and many more. The re-writing of my books is going very well and I am hoping that book 1 of the Awesome Four series will be finished by the weekend and back up on Amazon and other online retailers by next Wednesday at the latest. I've learned a valuable lesson from this mess, is not to rush the editing process and leave it take as long as it takes. Wish I had heeded that advice ages ago before publishing the books with so many errors and nonsensical story lines. But, I am very pleased with the way things are going and that finally I will have a book that I am proud of to be able to say to people "I wrote that." Welcome back metalheads - it's your guy Xander dissecting another black metal corpse on the autopsy table. Ttoday we have a band called Tableau Mort with their newest album Visio In Somniis which was released on May 6th. Tableau Mort hails from the UK, and again prove when it comes down to any style of black metal the medieval countries always kick our Yankee asses. The album begins with the spooky atmospheric sounds along with the sound of a baby crying. Sure, that might be slightly generic but the rest of the album more than makes up for it. The first track is of course called "Metamorphosis". One thing I noticed right away was the vocals. James Andrews has the same higher pitch screams as someone in a new age down tuned deathcore band but still has enough raspyness to qualify as a quality black metal vocalist. The winding guitar riff of "Idolatry" is a clever way of making sure people remember the song's intro. There is an odd sound that occurs in this song that sounds like a distant choir. You can slightly hear it in the background as it changes to what sounds like Mongolian throat singing or chanting monks. Next we have the album title track "Visio in Somniis". It begins with a calm and soothing musical start before a black metal screech rips your eardrum. It's a warm welcome that is accompanied by yet another fantastic guitar riff played by George Topor. He continues to bring in a solid rhythmic style as the album progresses. The drum work on this is absolutely stellar - NOT another disappointing cluster of blast beats like you get with other generic black metal bands. George Bratosin keeps a steady pace on his kit and makes it all come together in a wonderful tune. "Blood Echoes" follows after and I must point out how I noticed the bass guitar supporting the main riff. Marek Basista does a phenomenal job of making sure that the lead guitarist Cristian Giurgiu has that crisp reverb. The first minute of the song "Hope Ablaze" sounds like a cross between the beginning of "Sworn To The Dark" by Watain and the beginning of "Vortex of Negativity" by Naglfar. However it uniquely blends into its very own song that could be a great choice for a future music video. That is something I would definitely want to see! "Their Throats Are Open Graves" kicks things off with some kick drums and some other drums for a very small 10 second solo. By the 10 second mark, the rest of the band joins in to give us a fucking powerhouse of a song and its one of my favorites on this record. Every member of the band doesn't pull any punches when it came to this particular track. Everyone was on point and totally nailed this masterpiece into oblivion. Between the vocalist screaming his lungs out, the drummer going as fast as he can and the guitarist providing us with a nice little solo, it's not hard to see why I get so much enjoyment out of it. The track ends with a haunting fiddle conclusion. "The Fire, The Star" is what I would call the best example of modern black metal song. It has an old sound but with a clean studio recording. If you're looking for that less grimy Emperor esq feel, look no further than this track ... unless you want to finish listening to this incredible album. Of course you do. "Candle in the Darkness" is the grand finally. The sweep picking of the guitars in this song is what grabs my attention along with the rhythmic sounding chugs from the other guitarist. The drum speed on this track fluctuates from a moderate pace to blast beats and continues back and forth. This song also has the brief finger tapping guitar solo that mashes well with this great song. The perfect song to close an album of this scale. If I were to score this album I would rate it no lower than an 8/10. Feel free to show this band some love by buying their music from their Bandcamp page.
In this epic conclusion to Norse mythology, we cover the entire story of Ragnarok, the Norse end of the world. We tell the whole story, from Balder's death to Loki's punishment, and the battle itself on the field of Vigrid, and the renewed world. We also discuss the dichotomies represented by each of the gods and their enemies, and discuss our thoughts on Norse mythology as a whole. As always, there are many tangents, including a discussion on cynicism, a comparison of the punishments of Prometheus and Loki, Revelations, and how many pencils are on a certain endtable. Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 195 features an interview with Patrik Lindgren of Thyrfing. Emerging from the Nineties' black metal explosion, Sweden's Thyrfing has spent more than 20 years expanding their vision of folk-influenced black metal. Though they may have mixed feelings about being labeled "viking metal", the band has created one of the most successful marriages between Scandinavian mythology and the bombastic side of underground metal. I spoke with Thyrfing guitarist Patrik Lindgren about the "big picture" mentality that shaped the band, and the circumstances that led to Naglfar's Jens Rydén becoming Thyrfing's frontman. We also discussed the recording of their latest album, Vanagandr, and why the band made the decision to write all their lyrics in Swedish. My thanks to Patrik for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening.

Naglfar fans would be more than pleased with this highly anticipated and very long awaited new album. This band hasn't put out a record since Téras back in 2012. Naglfar has been my all time favorite black metal band since the late 2000s when I first discovered them in high school. For those of you who don't know, Naglfar is a melodic black metal band hailing from Umeå, Sweden. Here is a fun and gross fact about the band's name. Naglfar in Norse Mythology was a giant ship made entirely from finger and toe nails of the dead. As soon as I heard a few months ago that new material would be released from this band through Century Media Records, I quickly put the hard copy CD on pre-order. Unfortunately due to the current global pandemic I didn't get the CD in the mail a week before the album's release date, so I had to listen through my Amazon Music app. The first song is the album titled track "Cerecloth". One thing I noticed right away was how the guitar riff sounded very similar to the riff from the song "A Swarm of Plagues" from my personal favorite album Pariah. Though the riffs sounded alike, any real Naglfar fan would tell you that the songs are completely different. This is a good thing because it shows their fans that they know how to keep the old sound in the new record. The next song "Horns" is a crushing and straight forward black metal song that makes the listener beg for more. It is also a song that lets first time listeners get a real taste for Kristoffer "Wrath" Olivius' raspy and hellish vocals. "Like Poison for the Soul" begins with a surprisingly groovy bass line performed by Alex Impaler before continuing to rape your ears with more ghoulish black metal. It's a work of art that warms you up for what the rest of the album has in store for you. For the 4th track, we have the song "Vortex of Negativity". It starts off with the ominous sounds of a black electric guitar being quickly consistently plucked to make an eerie tune. When the beat picks up after 10 seconds we can visualize the simple yet beautifully shot music video for this song in our heads. If you could hear colors, it would be yellow lights illuminating fog in a dark forest as a man in a plague masks holds an old lantern. Skipping ahead a couple tracks we come across a gem of a song called "The Dagger in Creation". Musically the most diverse song on this new record. It has its main riff and a calming melody for a miniature solo that really stands out before blasting you in the face with aggressiveness. The drummer Efraim Juntunen (who is also the drummer for the power metal band Persuader is pretty much guaranteed to relentlessly kick your ass with is inhumanly fast double bass blast beat skills for the remainder of this album. Hats off to the guitarists Andreas Nilsson and Marcus E. Norman aka Vargher for writing such a soothing intro for the song "Necronaut" and pretty much giving us nothing but noticeably great riffs through the entirety of your careers with Naglfar. With all this praise I am giving to this band and all their musical accomplishments over the last 28 years, I can't not give this release anything less than a solid 9.5/10. The only reason I don't give it a full 10/10 is because it still just isn't as musically or lyrically catchy as their best 2005 album Pariah. To me, this Cerecloth album is the band's equivalent to: Sheol, Harvest and Téras.

Black Lion Records is a newer label, formed in 2015 in the northern Sweden city of Umeå. While a relatively small town, Umeå is nonetheless known as a hotbed of musical output, especially in the world of heavy metal, having been the breeding ground for such acts as Meshuggah, Naglfar, Cult of Luna, Refused, Nocturnal Rites, and many more, including a number of newer groups on Black Lion's roster.
Acanthrophis is a blackened death metal band who formed in Milwaukee in spring of 2016 with the hopes of recreating and progressing upon the approach of ’90s bands like Dissection, Naglfar and God Dethroned. While modern takes on extreme metal have gone a more abstract route, Acanthrophis seeks to return to the use of melodic structures to thematically express their take on black and death metal through complex yet dynamically concise songwriting. Debut EP Twilight of the Vanquisher’s Reign was released in July of 2016.
