On the latest episode, I'm joined by legendary systems scientist, futurist and cultural historian Dr. Riane Eisler. Riane is the recipient of many honors, such as the Distinguished Peace Leadership Award earlier given to the Dalai Lama, and is the author of many books, including The Chalice and the Blade, now in its 57th US printing and 27 foreign editions, The Real Wealth of Nations, hailed by Nobel Peace Laureate Desmond Tutu as "a template for the better world we have been so urgently seeking," and Nurturing Our Humanity, Oxford University Press, 2019, co-authored with Douglas P. Fry. Riane's innovative whole-systems research offers new perspectives and practical tools for constructing a less violent, more egalitarian, gender-balanced, and sustainable future. She is the President of the Center for Partnership Systems, which provides practical applications of her work, and Editor in Chief of the online Interdisciplinary Journal of Partnership Studies published at the University of Minnesota. On this episode, we discuss: Riane's early childhood experience as a Jewish refugee whose family fled Austria to escape the Nazis, and how that experience, as well as the loss of many family members during the Holocaust, caused her to question her understanding of God The difference between cultures of domination and partnership cultures, which she outlines in her groundbreaking work The Chalice and the Blade, and the shifts she's seen in culture since the book was first publishedThe subtle pervasiveness of dominator culture, and how we can find it rooted in our language, as well as all the underpinnings of societyRiane's focus on violence in the home, and how it directly correlates to violence in other aspects of society Plus, we riff on the magic of snakes and their ancient connections to the Divine Feminine (always a favorite topic of mine!)Notes related to this episode:You can learn more about Riane, her many books and her extense work at her website: https://rianeeisler.com/ You can learn more about the Center for Partnership Systems at https://centerforpartnership.org/resources/riane-eisler/ During this episode, Riane mentioned parapsychologist Thelma Moss, as well as the ancient Anatolian civilization Catal Huyuk. On this episode, Nate is joined by systems scientist Riane Eisler to discuss her decades of work studying ‘domination' and ‘partnership' societies throughout history and what it might mean to transition to more sustainable societies in the future. What we value at the individual and family level directly translates to the way we frame our governance systems - societies that emphasize empathy and caring also implement the same types of policies and values. How could we foster the more cooperative side of our humanity across all scales to create empowered communities and balanced decision making? What societies - past and present - lean towards a partnership paradigm and what benefits do their people receive? Is it possible to move away from violence and control oriented systems and into ones that value wide boundaries of empathy and understand the vital nature of care work? “Has a doll long criticized for perpetuating outdated gender norms and unrealistic body image become a feminist icon?” NPR asked; “The movie takes place largely in Barbieland, a candy-colored, women-centered utopia where Barbies hold the positions of power (all of the jobs, really, except for "beach") and Kens are essentially peripheral.” The Kens revolt - take over, start wars with each other, and try to dominate. We invited Dr. Riane Eisler, the distinguished author of “The Chalice and the Blade” to give us her perspective on the “Barbie” movie. In "The Chalice and the Blade” Riane tells a new story of our cultural origins. She shows that war and the “war of the sexes” are neither divinely nor biologically ordained. Her research reveals that human society originated in female/male partnership but was then coerced into a dominator society. She goes on to show us that a better future is possible in partnership! Anthropologist Ashley Montagu called it “the most important book since Darwin's Origin of Species”. Dr. Riane Eisler is President of the Center for Partnership Studies and has received many honors, including honorary Ph.D. degrees, the Alice Paul ERA Education Award, and the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation's 2009 Distinguished Peace Leadership Award, and is featured in the award-winning book Great Peacemakers as one of 20 leaders for world peace, along with Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, and Martin Luther King. In this episode, Dr. Jean Larson shows how the outdoors has healing powers! Nature-based Therapeutics, similar to integrative medicine, is a collection of practices to support a healthcare program. In NBT patients find healing by engaging with the outdoors, animals, and other sensory experiences in the "unbuilt world." Dr. Larson, a faculty member at the University of Minnesota and Developer of Nature-Based Therapeutics, joins the conversation to talk about the profound benefits of nature in therapeutic contexts. She shares her journey from studying therapeutic recreation to founding a program in horticulture therapy at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. The discussion delves into the importance of relaxation and self-care found in nature, and the tangible metrics in therapeutic horticulture, animal-assisted interventions, and facilitated green exercise. Dr. Larson reflects on her educational path and how she encourages students to integrate nature-based therapeutics into their marketable skills. She touches on her vision for the future of the field along with practical ways for anyone to incorporate nature into their daily life. Abuse is no longer just happening to the neighbor down the street or the girl on television. It's not just a random father creeping into their child's room at night, the unaccountable pedophile priest or a case of domestic violence. It's even beyond predator capitalism and abusive authority figures. “We're horrified and appalled by the opioid epidemic, but should there be any surprise? People are medicating themselves to blunt the trauma. We are an abused, exploited and traumatized society; we must recognize our abusers and begin to heal ourselves,” says Tate. Karen's book Normalizing Abuse takes the reader on a serious yet heartfelt journey of discovery, not just of oneself, but also looking into many aspects of our everyday lives, such as academia, government, corporations, the workplace and media, family and friends, society and culture, religion, military, and more, to peel back the veneer hiding rampant insidious abuse and exploitation. In Normalizing Abuse, abuse survivor, Karen Tate, takes off her rose colored glasses and confronts theacculturated abuse in society. She brings this pervasive and insidious poison to the fore so others can see, understand, and take steps to obliterate toxic elements from their lives and begin down the road to recovery. Thought leader, speaker, seven-times published author, and activist, Karen Tate's work is at the crossroads of spirituality, personal transformation and social justice. She is hostess of the long-running Voices of the Sacred Feminine podcast, considered a treasure trove of wisdom for more than a dozen years. A Caring Economy Conversation leader and Power of Partnership presenter with the Center for Partnership Studies, Karen also earned certification from Smith College in the Psychology of Political Activism: Women Changing the World.
As a holocaust survivor, Riane has witnessed both enormous violence, but also spiritual courage. It's not the courage that we are thought to think of, but the courage to stand up against injustice under love. Her experiences led her to ask questions that we are all asking today: does it have to be this way? Especially when we have such an enormous capacity for caring, consciousness, and creativity. Through her experience, humans were told that we are bad and that we must be rigidly controlled from the top; to instill a fear of God. We have not been told what to build to move to a more caring, sensitive, sustainable, and equitable place. Riane developed new categories through observation and research and what became clear is that for millennia, in our prehistory, humans' cultural direction is in the direction of the configuration of the partnership system, such as gender partnership and gender equity which are important pillars and components of that partnership system. For Riane, we are now in a time of reclamation and a tipping point, but the issue is which way will it tip? Riane Eisler, JD, PhD(h), is the recipient of many honors, such as the Distinguished Peace Leadership Award earlier given to the Dalai Lama, and internationally known for her groundbreaking contributions as a systems scientist, futurist, and cultural historian. She is author of many books, including The Chalice and the Blade, now in its 57th US printing and 27 foreign editions, The Real Wealth of Nations, hailed by Nobel Peace Laureate Desmond Tutu as "a template for the better world we have been so urgently seeking," and Nurturing Our Humanity, Oxford University Press, 2019, co-authored with Douglas P. It is my great pleasure to have returning to the show, foremother, wayshower and my personal mentor, Riane Eisler, author of famous books such as The Chalice and the Blade, Sacred Pleasure, and Our Real Wealth. She is the founder of the Center for Partnership Studies, winner of numerous awards and she is here with me today to discuss her newest book, Nurturing Our Humanity: How Domination & Partnership Shape Our Brain Lives and Future. Today we'll be delving into all that title implies as well as her legacy of work over the years and her best recommendations for how we as individuals can contribute toward society in a meaningful way to help humanity make that leap toward partnership and away from abuse, exploitation and domination and the trauma that comes with these unhealthy values and actions.
Riane Eisler, JD, PhD(h), is recipient of the Distinguished Peace Leadership Award (earlier given to the Dalai Lama) and she is internationally known for her ground-breaking contributions as a systems scientist, historian and futurist. Learn of the exciting advances in Eisler's work since “The Chalice & The Blade” and how the Partnership system can help us build what Garry Davis called a “People Powered Planet!” In “The Real Wealth of Nations,” for example, she shows that the great problems of our time — such as poverty, inequality, war, terrorism, and environmental degradation — are due largely to flawed economic systems. She offers a model of a caring economy that transcends traditional categories like capitalist and socialist and offers enormous economic and social benefits. Nobel Peace Laureate Desmond Tutu hailed it as "a template for the better world we have been so urgently seeking.” Eisler offers new perspectives for constructing less violent and more egalitarian, gender-balanced, and sustainable future societies. 2007 wurde ihr Buch „The Real Wealth of Nation“ veröffentlich. In the course of her life, she was able to transform this indescribable horror and create her inspiring Cultural transformation theory, becoming a source of inspiration for thousands of us, for she keeps on working for peace and understanding among peoples and individuals, form the social, educational, economic, political and spiritual point of view. /// Antonella RIEM ANTONELLA RIEM NATALE, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice Chancellor International, former Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures of the University of Udine, is Full Professor of English Literature and Language, Director of the Department of Languages and Literatures, Communication, Education and Society, President of the Italian Conference of Foreign Languages, President of ANDA (National Association of Anglistics) and founder of the Partnership Studies Group (PSG 1998), international research network based at the University of Udine. We know that current but old economic concepts have harmful gaps. And we know that these gaps still causing a lot of damage. Isn't it very strange that these harmful concepts still dominate our work, our society? Our so-called "economic professionals" cling to them and tell us that we will fix the damage these concepts have caused by keep on using these concepts? Sounds crazy. It is cray. When starting thinking about economics, we should finish thinking about it. Old, incomplete concepts have brought us to where we currently are. And yes: the damage is definitely significant, and we won't solve the big problems this way. Good News: “Investment in caring for and educating people is the best investment a nation can make. And: Economy is a human creation. We can change it”. If you are ready to think about Caring Economics, if you want to listen to what economy has to do with caring for children and caring for our nature, you get food for thought in this episode. Right after you can delve into Riane Eisler's books. Since 2020 a German version available. An episode with the great Dr. Riane Eisler, JD, PhD (hon), President of the Center for Partnership Studies, cultural historian and evolutionary theorist, social scientist, attorney, author. Her research, writing and speaking have influenced fields ranging from history, literature, philosophy, art, economics, psychology, anthropology, human rights, education, religious studies to economics, political science, women's studies, management studies and healthcare. “High-quality human capital is not produced in the university!” An episode about some of her research results on Caring Economics. An episode about women's quality of life as a powerful indicator of everyone's quality of life. An episode about the GPD and its not logical but pathological view on value creation; about the economic contribution of unpaid work; about the latest on the Social Wealth Index, the economic value of caring and a few calls of action. “It is economic suicide not to invest in human capacity development.” From Domination System to Partnership System. From Alpha to Beta. From an uneconomic approach to a healthy economy and society. We sit down with Riane Eisler, an accomplished researcher, author, professor and public speaker. Residing in Southern California, Riane briefly describes her experience as a Holocaust survivor as a little girl and her voyage to North America. In this discussion we break away from our tradition approach to conversation as we focus on Riane’s life’s work: ie. on Partnership systems. We discuss domination systems that have both women and men live and operate in a world that deprives them of their full humanity. We touch on consumerism and weapons of mass distraction. And most importantly, we learn about the characteristics of the original partnership societies where the cooperation of the feminine and the masculine produces a society where art and creativity are fundamental by-products. Amy: Welcome to Breaking Down Patriarchy. I'm Amy McPhie Allebest. Today's episode will be a discussion of the book The Chalice and the Blade, by Riane Eisler. This book was published in 1987, and along with other female archaeologists working at the time, Eisler proposed theories about humans' prehistoric past that caused quite a stir in the field of archaeology and gave rise to a spiritual “goddess” movement within feminism in the 1980's and 90's. Hi Malia! Malia: Hi Amy! Amy: Malia and I are neighbors here in California, and Malia, I'm thrilled that you joined this project because you are such a brilliant thinker and an amazing person. So Malia, can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Your background and what you like to do and your point of view that you bring to the text? Malia: (Bio) Amy: Can I also ask you what interested you in the project? Malia: (What interested Malia in the project) Amy: Thank you so much for being here! And with that, let's dive in. Malia, can you give us some background on Riane Eisler, and some of the main points that we'll be discussing in her book, The Chalice and the Blade. Malia: Riane Eisler is a social systems scientist, cultural historian, and attorney whose research, writing, and speaking has transformed the lives of people worldwide. She lived through the Nazi occupation of Austria when she was a child, and she writes the following about that experience: “I was born in Vienna, and my parents and I lived there until Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany. On Kristallnacht, so called because of all the glass shattered in Jewish homes, synagogues, and businesses, a gang of Gestapo men broke into our home and dragged my father off. That was terrifying. But that night I also witnessed something I carried with me the rest of my life. My mother stood up to these men.” Riane fled from the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_seizure_of_power (Nazis) with her parents to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuba (Cuba) as a small child, and later emigrated to the United States. She obtained degrees in sociology and law from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_California,_Los_Angeles (UCLA), and her lifelong questions about how and why human beings are so brutal to each other led to her work in Anthropology. Eisler taught pioneering classes on women and the law at UCLA; and has taught in the graduate Transformative Leadership Program at the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Institute_of_Integral_Studies (California Institute of Integral Studies) and the Anthropology Department at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, as well as online through the Center for Partnership Studies and the Omega Institute. She is editor-in-chief of the Interdisciplinary Journal of Partnership Studies at the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Minnesota (University of Minnesota) and President of the Center for Partnership Studies, dedicated to research and education on the “partnership model” introduced by her research. Eisler calls these societies “Partnership cultures.” Every one of these societies was eventually overtaken by invaders that brought aggression and the institution of social hierarchies. Eisler calls these societies “Dominator cultures.” Eisler points out the...

On this week's episode of Solutions News, we explore the benefits of a Partnership Model as opposed to Domination Systems with special guest Dr. Raine Eisler, President of the Center for Partnership Studies. Author and social scientist Dr. Eisler, among many other things, is a holocaust escapee from Austria who has both a Juris Doctorate and a Ph.D and has been a Fellow of the World Business Academy for almost three decades. In the show, we explore how human societies can be categorized along a continuum of how strongly it supports general human growth and development (the Partnership Model) versus how strongly it supports the rise of a small class of people on the backs of the rest (the Domination System). (Produced by Kristy Jansen.)

Riane Eisler – Exploring Sacred Pleasure: Sex, Myth, and the Politics of the BodyAired Thursday, December 5, 2019 at 4:00 PM PST / 7:00 PM EST“Our deepest and most powerful human yearning is for connection – for sex, for love, for all that gives pleasure and meaning to our lives. Yet sexual violence is commonplace, and the ‘war of the sexes’ continues to perpetuate misunderstanding and pain. Why does this struggle persist? What can we do to reclaim our innate power to give and receive pleasure and to find meaning in our lives?”That short passage was taken from a book published 24 years ago. As has become evident over the past few years, those words have been growing more relevant with each passing year. The book is Sacred Pleasure: Sex, Myth, And the Politics of the Body… New Paths to Power and Love. Its author, cultural historian, social systems scientist, and best-selling author of The Chalice and the Blade, Dr. Riane Eisler, joins Sandie this week to discuss:* The truths about sex that have been swept under the rug of religious dogma and scientific jargon.* The sexual myths that have corrupted male/female relationships over the millennia* How and why domination and violence have been eroticized and even sanctified* How sexuality is constructed differently in a partnership Vs. dominator* And, most important of all, how we can construct a society in which the unfolding of our higher selves through physical and spiritual union can be socially supported instead of distorted and repressed.RIANE EISLER is a social systems scientist, cultural historian, and attorney whose research, writing, and speaking has transformed the lives of people worldwide. Riane Eisler – Nurturing Our Humanity: How Domination and Partnership Shape Our Brains, Lives & FutureAired Thursday, September 19, 2019 at 4:00 PM PST / 7:00 PM ESTEverywhere we turn these days, from the news to books and movies, we are bombarded with the same hackneyed message: human nature is inherently bad… just look at all the senseless violence, greed, murder, rape, & war. We humans it seems are genetically wired, for selfish, cruel behavior. Or are we? Are violence, greed, domination and control really a fundamental and ineradicable part of “human nature?”“Absolutely not,” says cultural historian, social systems scientist, and author Riane Eisler, whose international best seller, The Chalice and the Blade, has been hailed as the most important book since Origin of Species. In her latest book, Nurturing Our Humanity: How Domination and Partnership Shape Our Brains, Lives and Future, Riane Eisler explains that” Neuroscience shows that the human brain is flexible. Through the interaction between genes and our lived experience, behavior patterns become woven into our individual and social fabric over time. To move toward the pro-social, cooperative, nurturing behavior that brain scans show we are inclined toward requires a shift from a system of “domination” to one of “partnership.”Riane Eisler joins Sandie this week to upend age-old assumptions about human nature. Topics include:• How research demonstrates that the tragic shootings of recent months and years may well stem from the impact of growing up in a “domination” culture or family that is held together by fear and force.• Witnessing or experience violence causes significant stress and leaves a powerful psychic imprint on children, which in turn can lead to violent behaviour• Neuroscience shows that caring behaviour is actually humanity’s default tendency• The blueprint for ending domination and violence at home and in society at large, and weaving non-violent behaviour patterns into our individual and social fabric over time.• And more…RIANE EISLER is a social systems scientist, cultural historian, and attorney whose research, writing, and speaking has transformed the lives of people worldwide. Riane Eisler is an eminent social scientist, attorney, and women’s human rights activist who pioneered the recognition of women’s rights as human rights. She is best known for her writings, including the international bestseller, The Chalice and The Blade, translated into 26 languages and now in its 57th US printing, with a new epilogue. She founded the first center on women and the law in the United States, wrote the Equal Rights Handbook on the proposed Equal Rights Amendment, and is the author of other award winning books as well as hundreds of articles and book chapters. Dr. Eisler is president of the Center for Partnership Studies (www.centerforpartnership.org) and editor in chief of the Interdisciplinary Journal of Partnership Studies housed at the University of Minnesota. Her book The Real Wealth of Nations was hailed by Archbishop Desmond Tutu as “a template for the better world we have been so urgently seeking,” by Gloria Steinem as “revolutionary,” and inspired the Center for Partnership Studies’ Caring Economy Campaign (www.caringeconomy.org) which offers online leadership training and has developed new Social Wealth Economic Indicators that demonstrate the enormous economic value of the work of care still largely performed by women worldwide. She consults to business and government about the partnership model introduced by her work, keynotes conferences worldwide, and teaches online courses about cultural and economic transformation. She shows that the women’s movement is the leading edge of the partnership movement, and, as summarized in the title of talks she gave at platforms such as the US Department of State, that what’s good for women is good for the world. She has received many honors for her work for women’s and children’s rights and peace, and is the only woman among 20 great thinkers, including Hegel, Adam Smith, and Marx, included in Macrohistory and Macrohistorians in recognition of the lasting importance of her work. In these darker days (we are fast approaching the winter solstice in the US), and with the darkness created by the Harvey Weinstein's of the world, Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un putting us on the brink of nuclear war, fires raging in Los Angeles, and the Middle East being set on fire by the Trump's decision to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem, I bring you one of the brightest lights and clearest thinkers about a path forward. Dr. Riane Eisler is President of the Center for Partnership Studies and internationally known as a systems scientist, attorney working for the human rights of women and children, and author of groundbreaking books such as The Chalice and the Blade: Our History, Our Future, now in 26 foreign editions, and The Real Wealth of Nations: Creating a Caring Economics. She has been hugely influential around the world and, if you haven't already heard her name, you will now as she is frequently quoted by some of the most interesting thought leaders. In this episode, Dr. Eisler will focus the relationship between gender and issues of war and peace – a topic about which I am most passionate. When I read the Chalice and the Blade in the 80's my eyes were opened! She elegantly divided the history of the planet into models of domination and models of partnership – and observed (like Bill Ury in his book Getting to Peace) that models of domination are more recent in our history and for the vast majority of human time on earth we have been living in partnership. Dr. Eisler clearly connects the dots of societies that have male-dominated family structures and those that support militarism and violence as a method of influence. She points out that the “regressives” in the USA (and around the world) get the connection between the family and national/international policy and have systematically pressured women back to their more traditional, subservient roles. She wants “progressives” to connect these dots as well and provide leadership for a new economic system where all things "feminine" -- child care, the environment, etc. are clearly reflected in our economic metrics of what contributes to our collective well-being. Children get a profound imprinting when they are raised in patriarchal or dominator families, where they learn that some humans are more valuable than others and that violence and strong-man rule is an acceptable method of influence. This translates to support for a domination system that not only supports a planet in conflict but polarizes groups by gender, race, tribe, religion, etc. As Dr. Eisler points out -- "it doesn't have to be this way." Please listen to this episode. We need people to more fully understand the brilliance that Dr. Eisler has to share with us and this path forward.
Special Event: Food for Thought Series "Spiritual Morality of Caring Economics vs Separation of Church and State" Tune in tonight while I fill you in on some food for thought that was a result of a presentation I made recently as part of a Riane Eisler Center for Partnership Studies class on Caring Economics I've been enrolled in. The subject came up that feminists have often divorced their social justice work from religion or spirituality. Myself, I believe in using critical thinking to reconcile one's spirituality and politics. Some think the two do not have to be in sync and when one does bring religion into lawmaking and policy, then we perhaps are on a slippery slope toward violating the sanctity of the separation of church and state protections provided by the Constitution. Listen in and you decide.
Special Show Tonight...Food for Thought: Series "How the Lack of Journalistic Integrity is Domination" Recently I've been enrolled in classes sponsored by Riane Eisler's Center for Partnership Studies and we've been learning about domination vs partnership structures of society. We learn that there are ways to be in partnership with your self, your intimate others, your community, the world and within a spirituality. I connect the dots between partnership as a value within Goddess spirituality. Likewise, we learn to recognize domination, exploitation, oppression; all hallmarks of patriarchy and today's predator capitalism. Tonight the domination I'd like to crack open and examine involves the corporate-owned media and the damage it's doing to our society. Maybe you've been watching how the ratings and money driven media has been dominating the conversation, interfering with democracy, controlling the minds of the masses. Here is a presentation I made as part of my class on the Power of Partnership, discussing the lack of journalistic integrity as just one form of domination and the importance of being aware.
Yes, awakening we are! The Sleeping Giantess, the collective conscious of humanity, is standing and we can hear Her Sacred Roar to protect Mother Earth, the people and the species on the planet! From the global protests against the TPP trade deal, to the fights to label GMOs in our food, to considering veganism a new mythology or spirituality for the 21st century, to choosing Democratic Socialism over establishment politics, all with a special emphasis on how this affects women. Yes, the warriors for Mother Earth and Her children are on the rise. Is it time to reconcile your spirituality and olitics and get onboard? Tonight I invite you to this special Earth Day presentation to share with you a talk I gave last week to the Museum of Woman and Goddess Temple of Orange County, which was actually part of a program I'm involved with at Riane Eisler's Center for Partnership Studies on caring economics. Sit back. Get coomfortable. Tune in. Thank you!
