Sondra Witt Burch, age 88, passed away peacefully Saturday, December 7, 2024. The day prior had been a day of love, laughter, and tears, surrounded by her loving family. Following a private family burial, a celebration of Sondra's life is scheduled for Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at 2:00PM at Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Robinson, Texas with visitation for family and friends immediately following the service. Sondra was born in Waco, Texas on March 27, 1936, to George Cleveland, Sr., and Virginia Craven Witt. She was a lifelong Waco resident and loved her community. She often reminisced about her family home on Washington Ave and the many mischievous escapades she and her brother Cleveland would get into as children and teens. As a young girl, Sondra and her mother Virginia knitted sweaters for WWII soldiers and entertained local soldiers from the USO by playing piano and organ duets and serving food in their home. During the Waco tornado of 1953, Sondra was having her senior portraits made at the studio of Jimmy Willis. These proofs were found 30 years later by Mr. Willis and personally delivered to the then Sondra Burch. Sondra attended Waco High School where she fell in love with her high school sweetheart, Jackson Bryce Burch and they married June 4, 1955. Sondra and Jack shared 53 wonderful years until Jack's passing in 2008. As newlyweds, Jack served his country in the USAF. While stationed in Germany, Sondra's fondest memories were being a member of the Officer's Wives Club and the birth of her firstborn son, Bryce. Sondra continued her love of service to others by helping organize projects to aid refugees during the Hungarian Revolution. Upon returning to the states, Treacy and Ben arrived six years apart to the day, completing their family. She managed to raise three lively boys while maintaining poise, grace, and style. She was known to bring orange juice or lemonade out to the waste management collectors on occasion! Sondra was proud of her heritage and the Waco community. She served on numerous placements through Junior League of Waco. Service was her gift, and she spent countless hours on local committees and Boards of Director including Waco Cotton Palace, United Way, Hedonia Club, Red Cross, Hillcrest Baptist Hospital Auxiliary, Providence Park Auxiliary, and many more. She coordinated blood drives, created Adopt A Grandparent programs and Adopt A School programs, and organized volunteer services and training through many local agencies. Even in her career choices, Sondra chose areas of service. After 25 years of serving as Director of Volunteer Services for Hillcrest Baptist Hospital she retired in 1997. She didn't stay retired long and subsequently served as Director of Volunteer Services for Family Abuse Center, Director of Volunteer Services for United Way, Director of Human Resources for Brazos Psychiatric Hospital, and Director of Volunteer Services and Community Relations for Christus Regis St. Elizabeth. Jack and Sondra prioritized family and Sunday lunch was expected at the Burch household. Some of the family's most treasured memories are those Sunday lunches, and family vacations to Colorado, Mo Ranch, and grandchildren only trips to New York. Sondra wanted her children and grandchildren to see and experience the world and all that life has to offer. She valued creating memories with each one of them and enjoyed “breaking a few rules” for the sake of fun! Colton and Tanner were introduced to the fine skill and technique of “wrapping” houses in Castle Heights along with Friday night sleepovers and non-parent approved movies at Honey and Papa's. Lottie, Amber, and Braxton were immersed in all thing's “girly” such as dolls, tea parties and pretty dresses. She wanted her children and grandchildren to know that life's rewards come first and foremost from a relationship with Jesus, a good work ethic, and treating people with kindness, love, and respect. Following the devastating loss of her husband Jack and two of her sons, Treacy and Bryce, Sondra found love again with Ross Sams Jr. They were married on March 16, 2010. She often called Ross her Knight in Shining Armor. She and Ross loved to travel when their health permitted. When they were no longer able, they reminisced about the adventures they shared together and “planned” many trips that we all knew would never be taken. Sondra was an avid Lady Bears Basketball and Baylor Football fan, a Dallas Mavericks fan, and she grew to love Texas Longhorn Football, Ross's alma mater. Sondra and Ross both suffered the devastating effects of cognitive impairment (dementia) in their later years. As their respective impairments advanced and health declined, it became necessary for Sondra to move to an environment with caregivers who could provide compassionate, empathic, and loving care, as this could not be provided in her home. She spent her final years at Arbor House where she was known as their very own “Georgia Peach”! Sondra flourished under their loving and specialized care and the staff quickly became family. She loved each one of them and we cannot thank them enough for taking care of “Honey.” Sondra expressed her unwavering love for Ross until her death. As with Sondra, we take great comfort knowing that when Ross entered heaven, his body was healed, his mind was restored, and all truths revealed. We know that they loved each other dearly. Sondra was a true “Southern Lady,” full of class and character. She was often compared to the late Audrey Hepburn who spoke the following words… “The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides. True beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It's the caring that she lovingly gives, the passion that she shows, and the beauty of a woman only grows with passing years.” Sondra often exhibited this beauty in her kindness to others. She was the perfect hostess and became Pen Pals with many of the children of her close friends while they were away at college or in the military. She had a most giving heart and a beautiful soul. Sondra is preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands, Jackson Bryce Burch Sr., and Ross Martin Sams Jr.; two sons, Treacy Andrew Burch, and Jackson Bryce Burch Jr; and brother and sister-in-law, George Cleveland, Jr., and Martha Witt. Sondra is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Genie Burch; daughter-in-law, Tracy Burch Thompson and husband Darrell; sister-in-law, Catherine Burch Bass; grandchildren, Lottie Bullock and husband BJ, Amber Araiza and husband Icaro, Colton Burch and wife Meighann, Tanner Burch, and Braxton Burch; 6 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; as well as her lifelong friends Betty Williams, Margie Allen, and Pat Dicorte. Sondra's grandchildren and their spouses will serve as honorary pallbearers. At Sondra's request, memorials may be made in her memory to, Meadowbrook Baptist Church Youth and Children's Ministry Camp Scholarship Fund. The following Ralph Waldo Emerson quote was found written in Sondra's handwriting. “To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition, to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived…This is to have succeeded.” Honey, you have succeeded! Till we meet again… Celebration Services and visitation are pending at this time. Please check back for updated information.Sondra's family invites you to leave a message or memory on her "Tribute Wall" at www.WHBfamily.com.

This week on Talk World Radio we're talking about making peace in place of the wars in Gaza and Ukraine. Mairead (Corrigan) Maguire is a Member of the Advisory Board of World BEYOND War. She is based in Northern Ireland. Mairead is a Nobel Peace Laureate and Co-founder of Peace People – Northern Ireland 1976. Mairead was born in 1944, into a family of eight children in West Belfast. At 14 she became a volunteer with a grass-roots lay organization and began in her free time to work in her local community. Mairead's volunteerism, gave her the opportunity to work with families, helping to set up the first centre for disabled children, day care and youth centres for training local youth in peaceful community service. When Internment was introduced by the British Government in 1971, Mairead and her companions visited Long Kesh Internment camp to visit prisoners and their families, who were suffering deeply from many forms of violence. Mairead, was the aunt of the three Maguire children who died, in August, 1976, as a result of being hit by an IRA getaway car after its driver was shot by a British soldier. Mairead (a pacifist) responded to the violence facing her family and community by organizing, together with Betty Williams and Ciaran McKeown, massive peace demonstrations appealing for an end to the bloodshed, and a nonviolent solution to the conflict. Together, the three co-founded the Peace People, a movement committed to building a just and nonviolent society in Northern Ireland. The Peace People organized each week, for six months, peace rallies throughout Ireland and the UK. These were attended by many thousands of people, and during this time there was a 70% decrease in the rate of violence. In 1976 Mairead, together with Betty Williams, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their actions to help bring about peace and put an end to the violence arising out of the ethnic/political conflict in their native Northern Ireland. Since receiving the Nobel Peace prize Mairead has continued to work to promote dialogue, peace and disarmament both in Northern Ireland and around the world. Mairead has visited many countries, including, USA, Russia, Palestine, North/South Korea, Afghanistan, Gaza, Iran, Syria, Congo, Iraq.

Kiss and Kill Murder: Betty Williams- Day 1 -The 12 Nightmares Before Christmas

Our first nightmare before Christmas takes up back in time to 1961. It is March in Odessa, Texas, and while the state is known for being warm, the spring air is still crisp in the mornings. The William's household is getting ready for the day. Mrs. Williams had made breakfast for her 17-year-old daughter Betty who is currently a senior at Odessa High School. Screaming her name from the small kitchen, Betty did not answer. Like most moms of teenagers, we are all too familiar with the oversleeping kid, so Mrs. Williams makes the walk down the hall to Betty's room and knocks on the door, telling Betty her breakfast is getting cold and she is going to be late for school. When Betty doesn't answer, she jiggles the door knob and realizes the door is locked. Mrs. Williams, perhaps out of fear or, more likely, anger, leaves the house through the front door to go around to the back of the house. Betty had an outside door in her bedroom, and well, Betty had been known to not always follow her parent's rules. As she opened the door, anger was now gone as she gazed upon a bed that had not yet been slept in during the night. Betty was missing.Join Jen and Cam on the 5th Annual Our True Crime Podcast's 12 Nightmares Before Christmas -Day 1: Kiss and Kill Murder: Betty Williams.Listener Discretion by @octoberpodVHS All music is courtesy of our Executive Producer @wetalkofdreams Sources:https://www.nydailynews.com/true-crime-justice-story/ny-kiss-and-kill-murder-ghost-of-odessa-high-school-20221029-gnokrx6tozfchdkvuxgejbqdpm-story.htmlhttps://www.cbs7.com/content/news/FIRST-ON-CBS7-Kiss-and-Kill-killer-has-died-504111961.htmlhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt5156498/https://medium.com/of-misdeeds-and-mysteries/killer-claims-girl-begged-him-to-shoot-her-6824335131bhttps://showbizcorner.com/betty-williams-murder-update-john-mack-herringhttps://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/RCRRBO7JMNKF7?ASIN=097775586X

Seventeen year old Betty Williams goes missing from her bedroom sometime during the night. At first investigators don't believe there's any reason to worry, it's not uncommon for seventeen year old's to sneak out or run off for a few hours. As a matter of procedure, an investigator heads to Odessa High School to find out if anyone knew where Betty was. They could have never imagined what happened next. John Mack Herring, a popular football player at the school, and Betty's ex-boyfriend, makes a shocking confession. He killed Betty the night before and hid her body beneath the muddy waters of a rural stock pond. When detectives ask why, Herring simply replies "Because she asked me to."Herring explained that Betty had begged him to end her life, saying she was miserable and wanted to escape from this world. In Herring's own words, moments before firing the fatal shot, he asked for a kiss to remember her by, and Betty obliged. The media christened the crime "The Kiss and Kill Murder."The town rallies behind the good looking and smart Mack Herring, a boy from the right side of the tracks from a good family while they demonize Betty, a harlot who seduced a tender teen into committing a hideous and violent act. Even in death, Betty Williams was blamed for the horrible crime committed against her.FB: https://www.facebook.com/TraceEvidencePod/IG: https://www.instagram.com/traceevidencepod/TW: https://twitter.com/TraceEvPodVisit https://www.trace-evidence.com for more information, case photos, contact information and more.Merch: https://traceevidence.threadless.com/ Music Courtesy of: "Lost Time" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

On March 22nd, 1961, the tiny town of Odessa, Texas was rocked by the murder of a teenage girl who attended Odessa High School. Betty Williams was a talented theater student and aspiring actress, but in the eyes of her peers, she was an outcast. The way that Betty viewed the world was entirely ahead of the era during which she was born; her idealistic spirit made her the subject of judgment and contempt amongst her classmates in the conservative Christian oil town of Odessa. When Betty doesn't arrive at school one morning and is reported missing by her mother, most of the locals in town think she's simply run away. But a confession from within Betty's small circle of friends shakes the town to its core._________________________Request a Case: https://forms.gle/FFZTNhqcXpQ6qRGr8YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2Q1EZyOPaPjYh9LiVDSbsAGoodpods: https://goodpods.app.link/ij0wxVE8vobPodchaser | Leave a review: https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/crime-and-crime-again-1440387Buy Me A Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/crimeagainpodFacebook Discussion Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/751716995667739/Music: "Poisoned Rose" by Aakash Gandhi_________________________Sources:• "Bye-Bye, Betty." You can find the full details here. Lorna Byrne is an international number 1 bestselling author (her last two books have gone straight in at #1 on the UK Sunday Times Chart) with more than a million readers around the world. Her books, Angels in my Hair, Stairways to Heaven, A Message of Hope from the Angels and Love from Heaven have been translated into 30 languages.  Lorna has been seeing angels since she was a baby. Very unusually, she sees angels physically with as much clarity as the rest of us see people and she sees them every day. This diminutive, soft-spoken, uneducated Irish woman who did not talk about what she was seeing until seven years ago, says she has no idea why she can see angels when others can't, adding that she is just an ordinary person. While it is difficult to believe that someone can see angels physically the clarity and hope inherent in Lorna's message that everyone regardless of religion has a guardian angel, has made her a world-wide phenomenon. She has been featured extensively in respected European media – including BBC TV and Radio, The Economist, The Observer, The Telegraph, The Times, The Catholic Herald. She is a blogger for the Huffington Post. Few who have spoken with Lorna Byrne fail to be impressed by the wisdom and humility of this Irish woman. The overwhelming response of her more than a million readers all around the world is that knowing that Lorna sees a guardian angel with everyone has given them the belief that they have a guardian angel. They say that this assurance gives them tremendous hope and comfort, particularly in these challenging times. An important part of Lorna's message is that she sees a guardian angel with everyone regardless of religion (or lack of religion). She talks of the guardian angel as the gatekeeper of the soul. Lorna frequently speaks to and prays with groups from different faiths and says that interfaith prayer is particularly powerful. Lorna emphasizes the special role that America is called upon to play in the spiritual evolution of humanity and in bringing peace to our world,. She says that America is where the solutions to many of the world's problems will come from – including the problems relating to wars based on religious divides. Lorna's recent work has included events in New York with Sunni and Shia Muslims where Lorna invited Irish Nobel Peace Prize winner Betty Williams to share the Northern Ireland experience of bringing together people of different faiths. A widow with four children, Lorna lives in rural Ireland.

Rima Fujita was born in Tokyo and now resides in Southern California. She graduated from Parsons School of Design with her B.F.A. and has exhibited her work internationally to much acclaim. As a descendant of the Last Samurai her creative aesthetics is strongly influenced by the philosophy of Bushido and Buddhism. Known for her distinctive style with vivid colors on black surface, Rima's works are extracted from her dreams and meditation process. They are ethereal and evoke a timeless sense of longing and peace, and yet if examined deeply her images trigger a powerful ripple of infinite emotions. She is inspired by “Nibiiro,” an expression of a very dark grey color from the Heian period in Japan (AD 794 to1185). If you mixed all colors that exist in Nirvana, the Buddhist land of Perfect Bliss, it would become “Nibiiro.” Rima's life passion lays in her philanthropic work. In 2001 she established “Books for Children,” an organization that produces children's books and donates them to children in needs around the world. She has created 4 children's books and has donated more than 12,000 books to the Tibetan children in exile. All profits go to support the Tibetan children's education. H.H. The Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu and Betty Williams, the Nobel Peace Laureates personally gave her special recognition in 2006 at the International Peace Summit in Japan. His Holiness The Dalai Lama calls her, “An artist who creates beautiful art.”  Visit her online: https://rimafujita.com/

Joe asked for works of urban Ireland in honor of St. Patrick's Day! Amy chose Colin Bateman's Belfast thriller, Divorcing Jack. Randy selected the 1935 John Ford classic that won a Best Actor Oscar for Victor McLaglen and John Ford's first Best Director, The Informer. Show notes: Intro Music: "Tell Me Ma" by Gaelic Storm Outro Music: "James Connolly" by Black 47 Randy talks about The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and the new Madonna album, Rebel Heart. Joe's been watching The Last Five Years and is still working his way through Parks & Recreation. As for Irish politics, there was no Prime Minister of Ireland in 1995 so...hell, we have no idea. They haven't had one since 1972 when the Parliament was suspended (but they have a First Minister since 1998). The Nobel Prize Stearkey refers to in the novel would have been the one that Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan were awarded in 1976 for their work for a peaceful resolution to the violence in Northern Ireland. The Good Friday accords come three years later in 1998. Atoní Dvorák was indeed Czech and Béla Bartók was Hungarian. An example of the Spider-Verse newspaper strip can be found here. Linda Holmes form Pop Culture Happy Hour wrote the Bachelor Pad recap of lore, including the phrase "The Courtyard Of Abandoned Dignity." The Florida novels Joe was trying to remember were the Travis McGee books by John D. MacDonald. There was indeed a much better Quiet Man Blu-ray that came out for the 60th anniversary in 2013. On the next episode: Amy's birthday is coming up! So, birthday stories. Randy chose John Hughe's 1984 movie, Sixteen Candles. Joe choose the Jhumpa Lahiri novel The Namesake (and for the record, it was her story collection, Interpreter of Maladies, that was awarded the Pulitzer).
