Rou suggests that my theory makes sense... stating that the second song is definitely the most important in maintaining listener's attention In this week's episode, we spoke to Rou Reynolds of the incredible Enter Shikari just before the release of the band's stellar LP A Kiss For The Whole World…this is what the flame haired front man had to say on Song 2s and track listing in general. Our flagship podcast-slash-radio-show Down With Boring is back with special guests Enter Shikari. Recorded at last month's Slam Dunk North festival, we're catching up with Rou Reynolds of the genre-defying masters with a chat that goes far and wide. There's also new music from The Japanese House, Bombay Bicycle Club, CMAT, Do Nothing, and more, and an album focus on Killer Mike‘s Really Very Brilliant new record, ‘Michael'.
Rou Reynolds is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, author, and frontman for English rock band Enter Shikari. Their debut album Take To The Skies (2007) shot up to the the 4th place in the UK charts and their eclectic style of electronically-infused alternative rock and socially aware lyrics have captivated listeners ever since. Their latest album is A Kiss For The Whole World (2023) and we had a chat with Rou about the album, resurrecting the band, introspection, creativity and self-worth, the longevity of the band, and a lot more! My guests this week are Rou Reynolds and Rob Rolfe of Enter Shikari. We talked extensively about their new album 'A Kiss For The Whole World' which is out now, as well as how they like their (often plant-based) eggs, fans who wish they were heavier, fans who wish they were less political - and had a bit of a location argument about where to host their dream festival. Enjoy
Interview by Kris PetersPeople tend to forget sometimes that musicians need us as a means of creativity just as much as we need them for a sonic escape. This notion was put to the test with almost catastrophic consequences during the recent closure of the world when British outfit Enter Shikari - like so many others - found themselves shut off from their fans and live audiences and faced the repercussions of art without inspiration perhaps more so than many others. The band members quickly found themselves feeling isolated, lost, and alone - from each other and their massive fanbase - and, unable to focus on what would normally be the simple task at hand of creating music, the band instead found themselves suddenly rudderless and without a way out of the darkness.Prolific songwriter and frontman Rou Reynolds strangely found himself struggling to put pen to paper and as the days turned into months the very real possibility that Enter Shikari might not resurface from the other side began to seem more like a foregone conclusion.Thankfully, as the world began to open up and opportunities came flooding back in the impending veil of darkness gradually lifted, culminating in the band electing to relocate to quieter surroundings to write, plan and record their new album. That album became A Kiss For The Whole World which will be unleashed on April 21, with Reynolds spending some time with HEAVY to run us through the dark times leading to the light."It's quite surreal that you finish an album, have to wait a few months for the manufacturing and everything to get sorted and then it finally comes out," he enthused. "I'm absolutely buzzing. I didn't listen to the album for about two months and then last week we were in Japan and I was very sleep deprived and jet-lagged and took a late night walk across Tokyo - which is always magical anyway - but I started to listen through the album again and it just got me so pumped. Very excited.""Basically, I stopped writing music over the pandemic time. I think retrospectively I realised that it happened for a few reasons, but one of the big reasons was that we weren't playing shows, and without that sense of human connection, without that sense of purpose, without feeling that energy it was like my brain shut off and just said if you can't share music with people what's the point in writing it? And that was quite a disorientating and strange time, really. When we started playing shows again I consequently felt like I could write music again and the sense of relief, the sense of gratitude, the sense of excitement was absolutely palpable. It kind of felt like a bit of a rebirth of the band, so the music on this album is all very high energy and really quite positive and hopefully empowering."In the full interview, Rou runs through the new album more from a musical point of view, the bands ever evolving sound and the extra pressure that creates with each release, relocating for the album process and what effect it had on the album, surviving without being able to perform, how close he came to walking away from music, what gave him his passion and inspiration back, how A Kiss For The Whole World is the beginning of Enter Shikari's second act, what's next for the band and more.
Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by Enter Shikari's ROU REYNOLDS!...and if you remember all the way back to episode 27 where Rou made his debut on Distraction Pieces, you will know that his name is pronounced "Rou like cow, not Rou like moo". But that aside - we welcome back Rou, in this excellent episode which delves into so much more than music. Situating ourselves immediately in the surroundings of Pip's old uni town of Wolverhampton, we hear about everything including politics and how to transmit that as a band, being a frontperson and the emotional toll, gender hangups and new arguments within, the Overton Window (see links below if unfamiliar), the creative drought of the pandemic, and of course MUSIC! Burying the lead there! So enjoy this welcome return and share freely - as with all episodes - you as a listener form a very important part of the Distraction Pieces chain. UK pop punk upstarts You Me At Six have nothing left to prove to anyone - much less themselves - when it comes to music. They have the runs on the board and consistently break down musical barriers with their accessible brand of rock, emo and punk, striking nerves the world over with their anthemic songs matched by an equally rebellious spirit. The band recently teased their fans with the announcement of their upcoming album Truth Decay, followed by lead single Deep Cuts. That excitement turned into a frenzy earlier this week with the release of No Future (Yeah Right), which features guest vocals from Rou Reynolds from Enter Shikari. You Me At Six frontman Josh Franceschi joined HEAVY to chat about the new single and upcoming album."I think it's an extension of Suckerpunch. It's probably the only song on the new album that's in the spirit of that where it's got dance elements in there, but with the whole mission statement to go retrospective we wanted to rediscover our original DNA if that makes sense. What is the DNA of the band? What are we? Who are we? Why do people like us? Why did people get into us in the first place? We wanted to grow on that and use that as the cornerstone of the record and I think No Future is probably the heaviest song on the record. Obviously it's got Rou from Enter Shikari as well and that gives it a bit extra juice. That's why it's the stand out song with the dance elements because we weren't gonna do that on this record and we had this song and said Rou you should jump on this and he really gave it an extra bit of something jazzy. It feels good. It feels like a song that is fuelled by anger and tension and you can hear that in the song. It's one of those songs where it's not necessarily a big single for us. We haven't made a pitch or anything like that for it. We wanted it to have its own moment because A it had our friend Rou on it and B because sometimes - especially right now - in our country there's a lot of tension, a lot of frustration. I'm not going to get into politics, but (laughs)... it feels like the perfect time to release it because people can scream in each others faces."In the full interview, Josh talks more about finding the original DNA of You Me At Six, what that is, collaborating with Rou and what he brought to the song, the musical direction of Truth Decay, blending musical styles together successfully and more.

Eclectic UK rock outfit Enter Shikari have made a career out of the sheer unpredictable nature of their music.Following the breakout success of their debut album Take To The Skies in 2007 – which featured the hit singles Sorry You're not A Winner, Mothership and Anything Can Happen IN The Next Half Hour… Enter Shikari took to the world, showcasing their brand of post hardcore and electronica with lashings of almost pop punkiness and straight out metal. It was a sound that had been flirted with before then but never really given a thorough workover. In the hands of most other bands it would have been an assortment of music too vast to successfully navigate, but when created in the minds of these four young Brits provided hope of a new musical revolution.Enter Shikari has released another five albums since then, each more sonically diverse than the last, but throughout have stuck firmly to their ethos of creating music that feels good to them despite the obvious pitfalls that come with such an approach. After decimating Australian crowds at Good Things Festival shortly before the advent of COVID, Enter Shikari have announced plans to return to this country in November and promise more of the same joyous anarchy that highlighted their last visit.Lead vocalist and all rounder Rou Reynolds sat down with HEAVY to discuss the tour."Australia was the last place that we played before the world went to shit,” he recalled, “and then it started so those shows are just etched in my memory. For the last two years they have been what I've been thinking about and yearning for because they were so good. It was so much fun. There was so much passion and enthusiasm around those shows so we're just hoping for a replication of that kind of vibe, that atmosphere. Australia's always been good to us but there was something about that last tri we did that was incredible so we're just gonna come back and give it out all."When I point out that their set was one of the highlights of Good Things for me personally, Reynolds smiled warmly before replying "I don't know what it was, man, but... there was... obviously the weather was amazing, and there was a great atmosphere at that festival anyway, but it just felt like... I don't know whether it was the time of day we were playing or what, but the stars seemed to align. They were some of my favourite sets we've ever played. I have such good memories from that whole trip."In the full interview, Rou talks about what we can expect from the shows, the terrible loneliness of isolation, his personal struggles with writing in that period, support bands Creeper and Australia's own Windwaker, the bands latest album Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible, new music and more.
Tune in this week as Dan chats with Rou Reynolds, frontman of electronic-post-hardcore band Enter Shikari. Debuting in 2007 with Take to the Skies, Enter Shikari have gone on to release six studio albums, each dripping with experimentation making them one of the world's leading alternative bands. The list of accolades and nominations is massive, including six Kerrang Awards won (Best Live Band, Best Single, Best Album), two NME Awards won and two AIM awards won to name a few. The band also has their own record label, Ambush Reality. On top of all this, Reynolds has explored side projects including a clothing label Step Up and has written and published three books as companions for his music, Dear Future Historians, The Spark and A Treatise on Possibility. In this episode, Rou and Dan unpack this impressive career as well as maintain consistency, creativity and connecting with fans in the pandemic era. Compassion and communication - two aspects of human nature that are seemingly being lost. Hatred spread on social media, hostile political rhetoric, a lack of equality and civility - these are just some of the problems spoken about by Rou Reynolds in his new book ‘A Treatise On Possibility'. From the Enter Shikari frontman comes a thought-provoking deep-dive into the vast capabilities of human ingenuity. In this episode he explores many of the fascinating things he learnt while writing the book, and we start by stepping into the ‘Dreamer's Hotel', a place where we're able to take stock, and examine life from a different perspective. He discusses how his book tries to intrigue a younger audience rather than to bludgeon them with ideological dogma, how so many of society's ills stem from neoliberalism and the primacy of the profit motive, the climate crisis and how governments haven't grabbed big oil and the fossil fuel industry ‘by the balls', Extinction Rebellion and the crackdown on protests by Boris Johnson's government, and much more!

Episode 230 of Life In The Stocks features a long overdue first appearance of my old pal Rou Reynolds on the podcast. The Enter Shikari frontman and published author joins me for an in-depth discussion about his incredible new book, A Treatise on Possibility, which is one of the most well researched and thorough books I've ever read - especially from a musician. It's definitely for the deep thinkers, but if you've found yourself questioning the very nature of human existence during this pandemic period - why are we here, what happened to lead us to this point, and where do we go from here - then Rou's book is an essential addition to your library. Apologies for taking so long to get you on the podcast Roughton, but it was well worth the wait for this chat. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On this episode of Going Underground, we speak to Lord Griffiths of Burry Port about why the UK government has not extended free school meals across school holidays, despite the economic crisis caused by Covid-19, meaning 1 million children could go hungry. He discusses why old Etonians such as Boris Johnson don’t understand poverty, his own experience growing up in poverty and his need for free school meals as a child, the growing use of food banks and charity organisations by families to get food, the impacts of austerity over the last 10 years and much more! Finally, we speak to Rou Reynolds, lead singer of Enter Shikari. He discusses the letter he wrote to Chancellor Rishi Sunak, asking for more financial aid for the arts and music sector, the disparity in which sectors within art and music get funding, the government’s alleged ‘culture war’ on the rock, indie and alternative cultures, politics becoming more uncivilised and much more!
In this episode, John catches up with Enter Shikari frontman and producer, Rou Reynolds to breakdown how the band wrote, recorded and produced their new album ‘Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible’. As the band’s most genre-bending album to date, Rou talks us through the challenges of combining techy metal, rave, reggae and ska influences with an oom-pah band and full symphony orchestra. Digging through his fifteen hard drives of demos and jams, we’re shown how every aspect of a track has a purpose and meaning – with detailed rhythms and distinctive sounds reflecting the state of the world in their own way. Listen to hear the original gibberish lyrics that ended up making the final version of a song, how the band ended up forming and recording their toy drum kit and what plugins Rou uses to create his own audio cuddle. Tracks discussed: THE GREAT UNKNOWN, Waltzing Off the Face of the Earth (1. COVID-19: Commonsense Conversations on the Coronavirus Pandemic
Recorded June 16 2020. Today’s episode is hosted by Dr. Patrick Beeman and he is joined by Rou Reynolds of the band Enter Shikari to discuss how the coronavirus pandemic has impacted the music industry. Dr. Beeman is an Ob/Gyn and the founder of Ars Longa Media and InsideTheBoards. He's the former director of undergraduate medical education for OnlineMedEd, director of content for a prominent osteopathic question bank. He was also at one time a philosophy professor. Some of his greatest loves are music, philosophy and theology, and his children. You can find him on Instagram (@darthbeeman) and Twitter (@BoardsInsider)! Enter Shikari are a British alternative-rock band formed in St Albans, Hertfordshire, England in 1999 by bassist Chris Batten, lead vocalist and keyboardist Rou Reynolds, and drummer Rob Rolfe and Rory Clewlow. Their debut studio album, Take to the Skies, was released in 2007 and reached number 4 in the Official UK Album Chart, and has since been certified gold in the UK. Their sixth album Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible was released in April 2020. Their eclectic musical style combines influences from rock music genres with those from various electronic music genres. Enter Shikari's lyrics, written by frontman Rou Reynolds, are often politically charged. He also stated that the band's general message is that "if we base our lives around love and unity, then that's all that matters." We are back on our bullshit today with yet another edition of Coffee with Comrades. This week, we’re sharing another collaboration with Capital City Mutual Aid and the Center for Participant Education. I facilitated a class on operational security and it was…well, it was a bit of a mess if I’m being perfectly honest. If that’s your jam, sick. I hope you enjoy it. If not, I am not at all offended if you skip this episode or just check out the resources we’ve linked to in the show-notes.
Episode 224 - While under quarantine in his London flat with just his cat, Rou Reynolds of Enter Shikari joins the show! With a (fantastic!) new album and no way to promote it, Shane and Rou discuss self-producing the record, the idea behind an instrumental Classical track (“Elegy for Extinction”) and Rou dancing his ass off in the “{ the Dreamers Hotel }” video. Also discussed his Rou’s sometimes mysterious personality, (still) not doing VIP’s, and the great friendship between the 4 still original members of Enter Shikari. Learn more about your ad choices.
