I simply adored my discussion with yoga instructor, Veronique Ory of Yoga with Veronique. If you need some prompting to show up in your life with love and compassion, to remember self-love, please listen to my chat with Veronique because it will make you feel really good. Veronique’s journey towards yoga is an interesting one. She studied Theatre at Russell Sage College in New York and worked in that space for years, including 17 years at the helm of her own theatre company, Athena Theatre Company. As many of us can appreciate, making a living in independent (off-Broadway) theatre is financially precarious and all the passion and dedication in the world cannot overcome the need to fund raise. Yoga was an antidote for Veronique to relieve the stress of that part of her job. In fact, Veronique was so taken by how yoga made her feel both on and off the mat that eventually, she wanted to help others find that stillness and happiness so she trained to become a yoga instructor. Veronique has a unique approach to teaching yoga where she weaves in her passion for storytelling and expression through movement which she explains in our interview. 095: Special Needs Care Planning: It's About More Than Just Legal Documents

Absolute Trust Talk

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 16, 2022 36:34

When planning for the ongoing needs of a special needs child or relative, there's quite an array of considerations that have to be made — some foreseen, some not. It's about far more than just paperwork — no two families are alike regarding their financial situation, the vision they hold for the future of their special needs child, or even the unique care requirements of that child.  These families do, however, tend to share one common purpose: that the parents are doing their best to replace themselves in the future when they're no longer around. After all, despite our best efforts, none of us live forever. If this is a scenario that's in your future — or perhaps the future of someone you know — you probably already appreciate how easy it is to be overwhelmed by the process. And if there wasn't already enough complexity to deal with in terms of insurance, benefits, caregiving, education, etc., special needs care planning also carries an additional challenge you won't find when planning for the care of an elderly parent or relative — it can often be for the long term, as “special needs” isn't necessarily synonymous with a shorter life span. To bring special needs care planning into sharper focus, we are thrilled to be speaking with Ann Koerner, CEO, and Founder of National Care Advisors, in a new episode of Absolute Trust Talk. Since 2008, they've provided consulting services for special needs families, attorneys, financial planners, and trustees who support individuals with complex care needs. As a result of her work with many national corporations, Ann possesses extensive business knowledge of case management, utilization review, third-party payers, workers' compensation, private insurance companies, and government resources. In addition to her special needs expertise, Ann holds a degree in nursing from Russell Sage College. She began her nursing practice as a public health nurse in New York and later with the City of Columbus Health Department. Ann will be talking about the challenges that lie ahead for family members, including parents, siblings, and other relatives, when planning for the future of someone with special care needs. There's a lot to consider, from financial planning to living accommodations and day-to-day care. In this episode, we're going to discuss: The most common scenarios that prompt a family to seek specialized outside help with special needs care planning How parents' initial assumptions when planning are often unrealistic The role that siblings usually prefer to play in special needs care planning Why failing to seek qualified outside help to save money often has the opposite effect The various ways that National Care Advisors can help families navigate the Special Needs Care Planning process And more. Whether special needs care planning is in your future, or you're already mid-process and experiencing more than a bit of frustration, this episode will put this often-complex planning in a clearer light. It will also raise questions you probably haven't even considered, so let's get started!

More than seven million New Yorkers are now eligible to sign up to receive the coronavirus vaccine. Among those eligible are first responders, teachers and individuals aged 65 and over. Vaccine distribution centers are opening across the state this week.  On this episode of The Eagle, Times Union Editor Casey Seiler leads a discussion that explores why communities of color tend to have higher rates of distrust of vaccines and public medicine, and why overcoming those fears in the Capital Region and across the nation will be key to fighting COVID-19 — a pandemic that’s done disproportionate damage to Black and Latino Americans. Also on this episode, education reporter Rachel Silberstein interviews Russell Sage College president Christopher Ames about how the Troy-based college overcame its financial challenges and responded to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Emshika Alberini Emshika is the chef/owner of Chang Thai Cafe and M-ZO Tea & Co, both located in Littleton, New Hampshire. She’s been a generous supporter of Radio Cherry Bombe and Heritage Radio Network, so we invited her to join us as our first-ever guest host. Emshika grew up in Bangkok and learned to cook from her mother and grandmother. She moved to New York in the early 2000s and earned a master’s degree in organizational management from Russell Sage College in Troy, N.Y. She then moved to Littleton and opened her cafe in 2008. Unable to get a loan, she financed the entire thing on her credit card. Chang Thai found an audience and in 2014, Emshika opened M-Zo Tea & Co next door. Business NH Magazine recently named the establishments as two of New Hampshire’s five best women-led establishments. Sohui Kim Sohui is the chef and co-owner of Good Fork, a neighborhood institution in Red Hook, Brooklyn, and Insa, the new Korean bbq and karaoke spot in Gowanus. Sohui was born in Seoul, Korea, and lived there until the age of 10. In 1981, she immigrated to the United States and took up residence with her family in the Bronx. She later graduated from Barnard with a degree in liberal arts. After working in the architectural publishing business, Sohui was close to applying to law school when she got bit by the cooking bug and attended The Institute of Culinary Education instead. She completed her education with an externship at Blue Hill under chefs Dan Barber and Michael Anthony and went on to work for Anita Lo at Annisa in the West Village. She and her husband Ben Schneider opened the Good Fork in order to express her unique culinary perspective: a hybrid of her time in Korea, the Bronx, and the fine dining kitchens of Manhattan. Her favorite karaoke song is “We Belong” by Pat Benatar.
