Mayur Gupta grew up in India, got his degree in computer science, and started his career as an engineer in 2000 at HCL Technologies. Since then, Mayur has had quite a diverse and impressive career path. He has held key marketing leadership roles at SapientNitro, Kimberly Clark, Healthgrades, Spotify, Freshly, and most recently, Gannett, part of the USA Today Network. Throughout the years, Mayur has also developed a role as an investor and board director for various organizations. Today, his role as a marketer and his role as an investor play into each other and make him better at both. Mayur started getting into crypto in 2016, and in 2022, he was brought on as the Chief Marketing Officer at Kraken. In this episode, Alan and Mayur discuss his career path, his investor activity, his board directorship, and the throughlines he has seen having worked across different verticals and scales. They also talk about what marketing crypto looks like, what he is trying to achieve, and how he measures effectiveness. Alan asks how the trial of Sam Bankman-Fried and the downfall of FTX have impacted the crypto market and the role Mayur's marketing team plays in educating the next wave of adopters with a focus on substance and real-world use cases. Kraken is a crypto exchange that has been in business for over 12 years, making it one of the longest-standing and largest exchanges in the world. In the first few years, they focused on their first consumer segment, professional traders. About 4 years ago, they diversified into their second and third consumer segments: retail consumers and institutional clients. Recently, their focus has been on continually diversifying with new ventures like NFTs while staying focused on the broader mission: driving and accelerating the adoption of crypto to bring financial inclusion and freedom to the world. The first 10 years of Kraken's growth were based on word of mouth, signaling a great market fit. Mayur tells us Kraken's next phase is going to be driven by branding and performance, with 2024 being all about scale and getting on the Formula 1 race track. In this episode, you'll learn:Why and how is Kraken shifting its marketing strategy and segment focus? The role of marketing for crypto in the wake of FTX and SBFThe importance of increasing your velocity of decision-makingUnderstanding that brand is performance and performance is brand Key Highlights: [02:10] Marketing through the lens of an investor and board director[05:00] Mayur's path to Kraken[09:25] What is Kraken, and who do they serve?[11:25] Growth Marketing for Kraken[12:50] Marketing across different verticals and scales[15:35] Livestages and business models impacting marketing[19:25] Where is Kraken with their marketing strategy today?[21:45] Marketing to the entire world[23:55] Measurement, attributions, and making the case for marketing[28:15] Making decisions with 70% information and 30% belief[29:10] The FTX and SBF impact on the category[33:50] Buddhism is the backbone of Mayur's life.[36:40] Advice to his younger self[38:40] The need to prove marketing's relevance[40:10] AI, measurement, and the crossover between marketing and brand[41:55] The biggest challenges facing marketers today Looking for more?Visit our website for links to the resources mentioned in this episode and ways to connect with the guest! Ulli Appelbaum has held senior strategy and account planning roles at some of the largest advertising agencies in the world, working with brands like Wrigley, Hallmark, Nestle, and Chrysler along the way. His latest book is The Brand Positioning Workbook, which we discussed this week on the On Brand podcast. About Ulli Appelbaum Born in Germany, raised in Africa and Belgium, and now living in the US, Ulli Appelbaum has held senior strategy and account planning roles at some of the largest advertising agencies in the world including BBDO Germany and Chicago, Leo Burnett Budapest, Frankfurt & Chicago, Fallon Worldwide in Minneapolis, and SapientNitro in Chicago, L.A., and Minneapolis. His insights and strategies have helped brands such as Wrigley, Nestle Purina, Harley Davidson, Hallmark, Nestle, Procter & Gamble, Chrysler, and many more. In 2014, he launched First The Trousers Then The Shoes Inc. a brand research and strategy consultancy based here in Minneapolis working for clients including Siemens, Outlaw Energy Drinks, Post Consumer Brands, Angel's Envy/Bacardi, Flexera, Anchore, Double Good, Verve Credit Union and a few more. Ulli is the author of The Brand Positioning Workbook: A Simple How-To Guide To More Compelling Brand Positionings, Faster, the best-selling Positioning Development Method Cards, Aha!, The Ultimate Insight Generation Toolkit, and 26 Popular Children Games from Around The World, a set of game cards created to help promote cultural understanding and tolerance among children through play. Episode Highlights The strategy on the shelf. After a quick laugh up front, Ulli and I opened the show with a conversation about strategy. Often, when digging deeper with clients, Ulli found an old strategy “on the shelf” that no one was really using. How can you make strategy more actionable? This, like many things, comes to better understanding your customer. Ulli shared a recent client experience that reinforced the need for better insights and research. A workbook for the work of brand positioning. When Ulli embarked on his latest book, he found no shortage of existing books on positioning. However, as a seasoned brand builder, Ulli knows that positioning is a lot of work. That's why he set out to create not an encyclopedia of brand positioning but rather a simple workbook for setting this critical process in motion—The Brand Positioning Workbook. What brand has made Ulli smile recently? Ulli shared the latest work from McDonald's UK, where the brand has made the bold move of not showing the restaurants or food but rather their iconic (golden) arches as eyebrows.   Every year Toronto hosts "Scotiabank Nuit Blanche" an overnight art event that takes place across the entire city. In 2015 SapientNitro (now SapientRazorfish) had just moved into their new offices and worked with their landlord, Allied Reit, to come up with something interesting for the lobby of the building. The idea they came up with was 'Mimir's Well', a very old story about the Norse God Oldin, who sacrificed his eye to drink from Mirmir's Well and gain the wisdom and memory of the nine worlds. Using Kinect technology, Unity 3D animation and parametric speakers guests stepping up to one of the nine sides of the exhibition were met with screens showing their own reflections, which soon morphed them into an animal of Norse lore.As visitors experimented with their newly adopted forms, sound enveloped them while their surroundings transformed into one of the nine Norse worlds. I spoke with Graham Ameron, who is Associate Creative Director at SapientRazorfish, about the technology and thinking behind this 12 hour installation. After a year of hard work (including the summer), their project was chosen to be presented at the White House Science Affair in front of President Barack Obama. In Part 2, we set aside glories and trophies and began focusing on the daily lives of two college students:  What is the day in the life of an MIT / Brown student? How to be obtain a "Pirate License" at MIT?  Why does Felege run with a "clicker" in the morning at Brown? What do MIT college students do day in and day out? What are a few things (in Karen and Felege's opinions) that could improve the current state of higher education? Why is it important to learn how to think? Quick final questions - What does success mean? How to live a fulfilling life? What does  a dream project look like to Karen and Felege without concerns of budget and resources How did this all happen? You may be wondering how I got in touch with Mrs. Brooks in the first place. In 2011, I helped organize a field trip for design students at the Commonwealth School and Newton North High School to visit Sapient (an agency I was working for at the time) to explore design opportunities beyond traditional disciplines. Nate Delong competed at the 2014 World Muay Thai Federation Championship on Team USA and took Gold Metal for the Pro AM (Pro/Amateur) Heavy Weight Division. Like many of us, Nate has a full time job. He is a producer at SapientNitro, an advertising agency based in Boston, MA. In this podcast, you will learn about how Nate was able to balance work and his passion to compete on the international stage.  Nate was introduced to me by Matt Lindley. Matt is my hero and a wonderful guest who appeared on a previous episode of the feisworld podcast.  If you have listened to some of my previous episodes, it is no secret that I'm a dedicated martial arts practitioner as well. The desire to interview someone like Nate is obvious. But why should you care, or how does this interview benefit you in anyway?  Ironically enough, much of the learning as a martial artist can apply to regular office job. Not the fight (of course) but strategies that help you improve your interpersonal skills, reading and understanding your clients, managers, peers, even at interviews - what/how can you learn about the person you are speaking to in a split second and respond effectively. As a fellow martial arts practitioner, I compiled a list of questions I wanted to ask Nate. Whether you are seriously pursuing a career in martial arts or not, I hope you find these questions somewhat intriguing: How did Nate prepare himself for the World Championship in Thailand? In just 3 months, how did he peek his performance and condition himself to be in the best competition shape? What type of fighter is Nate, and what is his competition philosophy? How does Nate study his opponents prior and during the competitions? How did he overcome fear, pressure, other mental and physical challenges during practice and then on stage? What are the counterintuitive learnings that significantly improved Nate's ability to win? How did Nate cut down 14 lbs 24 hours before his the first tournament weigh-in? (Not recommended for individuals without consulting healthcare professionals.) What are some of the interesting discoveries on the international stage? What is Nate like in everyday life? Where did he grow up? What's Nate's advice for people who want to compete in martial arts? What's next for Nate? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/feisworld/support

If you ask me to list 3 people who have helped shape me into who I am today, Matt would be one of them.    Matt's list of accomplishments in the advertising and marketing world goes way way back. He's been a storyteller for over 25 years. He sold OneZero Media, where he created and produced CBS’s first broadcast TV show about the internet, and he personally hosted it for three seasons. He was an ECD/EVP at Arnold Worldwide leading Progressive. More recently, he co-created a business visioning tool called ThirtySix at SapientNitro.    He's a board member for Friends of the Boston's Homeless, a non-profit organization that helps over 400 homeless individuals move beyond shelter to lead independent lives in our community. He is also a board member for Stop Handgun Violence. Those of you who have driven by Mass Turnpike around 2008-09, you probably have noticed the 250-foot billboard that says "We Sell Guns! No ID Required. No Background Checks."    In this 2-part episode, I recorded with Matt Lindley at his home office. You will hear about Matt's path from growing up on a farm in Pennsylvania to his appointment as a senior advertising executive. Matt shares his strategy for making sure your creative input is valuable.
