The three traditions sparked a cultural revolution. This discussion with host Lawrence Knorr provides insight into centuries past, and how faiths lived and grew together and inspired immense change, now seemingly lost. John D. Cressler is the Schlumberger Chair Professor in Electronics at Georgia Tech. This is still true today! There are assigned Satanic forces [principalities, powers and dominions] that are delegated to specific geographic areas. SO WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? A quick examination of population studies shows increased aging which is probably due to increased prosperity and new medical developments. The global population is aging. Life expectancy has increased to 70 years or more in many countries. In 2020, for the first time in recorded history individuals aged 60 or older outnumbered children under the age of five! These remarkable gains are due to improved public health, better nutrition, better healthcare and, most recently, employing technological innovations, big data and artificial intelligence to improve healthy life expectancy and meet the demands of an aging population. People are living longer which is—or at least has been in the past―a blessing! The World Economic Forum (WEF) says the biggest benefit technology can have on aging and longevity is creating opportunities for people to connect. BUT THEN WATCH HOW THIS CONNECTION WILL TRY TO USE THIS TO CONTROL THE AGED … AND YOU! In 2015 one-in-five households provided care to an elderly or disabled individual who required assistance. By 2030 only one-in-two households will provide care to the elderly who need it. Humans (that would be most of YOUR neighbors probably) have CHANGED their minds about caring for the aged … AND about having children! PLUS … families as we have known them are under attack. Children―in the eyes of many people today worldwide ...especially in Fascist run countries―are NOT thought to be a blessing of the Lord. “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.” (Psalm 127:3) In addition, decreasing fertility is a worldwide trend at this time! Plus, many globalists like Bill Gates want to decease world population. And many people are deciding NOT to have children … or even to marry. Female fertility has declined in recent years AND male sperm counts are also decreasing. Less population―even with increased AI and robotic production―along with increased length of life will create a social-economic tsunami worldwide … EXCEPT for the People who know their God! ■ CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBALISM: FACT OR FINANCE Climate change and Green Energy have―since 2020―seriously damaged the economies of most nations. Check out my teaching on Climate Legislation: the Inconvenient Untruth where I discuss TWO (2) postulates concerning Climate Change that are never covered by environmentalists, the media, or authors on the subject. Also, several resources are available for further study. Hopefully, IF you are involved in environmentalism―expending time or money―you may find another way to be more effective in helping Planet Earth and its inhabitants. Global emissions like CO2 and methane are rising but as far as the USA is concerned our position should be “Let China and India clean up their mess first, and we'll wait until they catch up.” Both China and India persecute and murder Christians. Do you really expect them to be emissions honest and friendly? None of the anti-carbon referendums proposed today are backed by scientific proof. This CHANGE will NOT make a difference EXCEPT to strap you with CONTROL and ESG social scores … plus do away with lots of enjoyable lifestyle. For example the "seeming" correlation of temperature to CO2 in the atmosphere. Al Gore states ... and thereby presupposes ... that the CO2 present in the atmosphere is causal to the rise or fall of temperature. When, the reverse is true: it is the temperature―the sun has a lot to do with this!!!―which is the casual effect for the amount of CO2 present in the atmosphere. Gloabalists―most of the nations―have CHANGED to dance along with the Climate Alarmists. In 19 of the “developed” countries the public views climate change as the TOP global threat. How did this come about? Trick #1 ~ Climate Change is a lucrative enterprise. And don't forget politicians. Trick #2 ~ Global Warming allows governments to control you. IT'S ABOUT MONEY AND CONTROL ■ DOWN WITH THE WEST: FASCISM VS. FREEDOM Biden, the Great Divider―used by Satan―has helped to destroy the prominence of the USA. The EU and America are now competitors with the rest of the world: India, China, Russia, Asia and others. What brought this CHANGE about? As a result of USA and Europe imposing sanctions on Russia because of its invasion of Ukraine financial systems were shut down BUT this backfired. WHY? Other countries became fearful that US and EU might shut them down in the future … and so, they decided never to be “locked in” economically and financially by the Western nations. The USA is no longer the “Shining City on the Hill” but is now a competitor with many of our previous allies, at least economically and financially. This will result in MAJOR CHANGE in banking, currency, global trade and “financial balance.” Setting up a bartering network could be a really good avenue since now we trade time or skills for monopoly money to then trade that money for goods and other services. It seems like the time to get rid of the middle man. Planting your own food, saving seeds from everything you buy and learning to live off the grid will be very helpful in the future. ■ FEDCOIN AND THE END OF PRIVACY Watch out for CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency) or Fedcoin. The government will use an excuse of “regulation around crypto currency” as one way to push this agenda. CitiGroup, MasterCard and six other institutions are trying to digitize actual physical dollars. ESG is now masking itself as ETI, or Economically Targeted Investments. If you have a 401-k this will no longer be “Your Best Investment.” ETI will go “Hand-In-Hand” with Fed Coin AND it will be the end of financial freedom. Fedcoin is NOT be an actual coin. Instead, it is a special account created and maintained for each American by the Federal Reserve. Each month, Fed employees could tap a few keys on a computer and each American would have dollars added to his Federal Reserve account. Fedcoin could effect private cryptocurrencies. Also, it would limit the ability of private citizens to protect themselves from the Federal Reserve-caused decline in the dollar's value. Dr. Ron Paul says, “Fedcoin is a New Scheme for Tyranny and Poverty.” Fedcoin would NOT magically increase the number of available goods and services. What it would do is drive up prices. The damage this would do to middle and lower income Americans would dwarf any benefit they receive from their monthly “gift” from the Fed. The rise in prices could lead to Congress regularly increasing Fedcoin payments to Americans. These increases would cause prices to keep rising even more until we face hyperinflation and a dollar crisis. Fedcoin poses a great threat to privacy. The Federal Reserve could know when Fedcoin is used, who is using it, and what YOU use it for. This information could be shared with government agencies, such as the FBI or IRS. The government could use the ability to know how Americans are spending Fedcoin to limit our ability to purchase goods and services disfavored by politicians and bureaucrats. Operation Choke Point involved financial regulators “alerting” banks that dealing with certain businesses, such as gun stores, would put the banks at “reputational risk” and could subject them to greater regulation. Is it so hard to believe that the ability to track purchases would be used in the future to “discourage” individuals from buying guns, fatty foods, or tobacco, or from being customers of corporations whose CEOs are not considered “woke” by the thought police? Fedcoin could also be used to “encourage” individuals to patronize “green” business, thus fulfilling Fed Chair Jerome Powell's goal of involving the Fed in the fight against climate change. Fedcoin could threaten private cryptocurrencies, increase inflation, and give government new powers over our financial transactions. Fedcoin will also speed up CHANGE for destruction of the fiat money system. Whatever gain Fedcoin may bring to average Americans will come at terrible cost to liberty and prosperity. A cashless society would be the death nail for liberty and freedom, offering centralization―the likes of which Marx and Lenin could only dream. The existence of a government backdoor or spyware becomes a real possibility and with the government's track record, a probability. There is no doubt, at least to my mind, that we're living through some kind of a mass hysteria event. Writing on his site, John Kass says:A weak president who is out of control, one who wildly denounces those who disagree with him as sinners against the state, blaming them for the failures of his extreme legislative agenda that can not generate enough votes in the Senate is not a hopeful business. It is a frightening thing. It is something out of bad paranoid fiction, or post-war Eastern Europe. But it is not fiction or history. It seeps from the babbling old man in the White House.Most Americans aren't worried about looking for racists on every block. They don't think America is consumed by racial hate. They think America is a nice country. They like living here. They're worried about other matters. They wonder why Biden and the Democrats won't address their concerns.The people are worried about inflation, not racist witches. After those wild spending and money-printing sprees from Washington, inflation is now higher than it has been in 40 years. It is eating a hole in their bank accounts, college funds and retirement savings. The people see the rising price of gas and wonder how long they'll be able to afford meat.They're worried about confusion over vaccine mandates and vax passes and their kids being locked out of school in the lockdown blue states, of babies ordered to wear masks.What they're not worried about are the screams of the witch hunters, or whether to play some old-timey Democratic political game like “race cards.” They have lives.Anyone can be seen as a Domestic Terrorist by Biden and Merrick Garland. Parents who protest school boards, anyone who might not want to take the vaccine. Anyone who objects to the practice of teaching “antiracism” to children, or even people who might object to gender theory being taught to their kids. If you misgender someone you can be banned for hate speech on Twitter. Is that now going to be the law of the land? Do the citizens have any right to dissent or object? Worse, the Biden administration doesn't seem to understand that the whole world is watching. They're watching him confused and angry, demanding his citizens comply with his orders. So insular and disconnected from reality are Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, not to mention the journalist class in the mainstream and the Blue Checks on Twitter, that they're actually trying to sell the pitch that a bunch of rag-tag rioters, who were unarmed, had the power to bring down the mighty United States - to threaten our Democracy and to present any sort of challenge whatsoever to the most powerful military in the world. Imagine what Vladimir Putin makes of that. Or Xi Jingping. Or the Taliban leaders. Either they're laughing at us or they're kicking themselves for not realizing just how vulnerable the United States government actually is. These aren't leaders. Writing on his Substack, Serve to Lead's James Strock goes through how past leaders might have navigated January 6th to illustrate just how weak American leadership has become. From George Washington:Would Washington have toyed with a mob from the White House—and not acted to forestall violence? This was the president who put down the Whiskey Rebellion.Would Washington have fled the throngs marauding the Capitol halls? Would he have slipped onto an underground tram, repaired to an office building a quarter-of-a-mile away, barricaded himself in a bathroom in a colleague's office, and tweeted that he was traumatized?Would he have failed to recognize an oligarchy brazenly striking at the foundation of the Bill of Rights? Washington's generation knew oligarchy and feared and fought it. Recall that the British East India Company owned the product that was thrown overboard in the Boston Tea Party.And Teddy Roosevelt:Were he a member of Congress, would he have allowed a police officer, perhaps one not equipped in riot gear, to shield him from danger?On Monday, October 14, 1912, Roosevelt took a bullet to the chest, fired at point-blank range. The aging former president then spoke, without a microphone, for well over an hour, before accepting medical care.Would any of the strongest leaders of this country project such an image of weakness to the rest of the world just to score political points? You think your average person on the Left looks foolish walking into a supermarket in a hazmat suit, imagine what the rest of the world thought of Nancy Pelosi's Green Zone occupation of DC after Janaury 6th. We look like freaked out, hysteria-driven lunatics who can't handle someone using the wrong pronoun or words that make us feel unsafe, let alone a riot that was not even as bad as the riots that followed the protests for months in the Summer of 2020. Whole businesses were burned to the ground. Dozens were killed. It was the closest thing to an actual revolution we've seen since the founding of the United States yet this one riot, in a futile, and frankly sad, effort to decertify the election count might have looked scary as portrayed on MSNBC but close up it was nothing this country hasn't seen many times before. Like in 2011 in Wisconsin and Michigan when protesters breached the Capitol to protest a vote on labor.Like the actual bombing of the Capitol by the weatherman in the 1970s. The difference was for four years the media had sold Trump and his supporters as domestic terrorists, White Supremacists and Nazi Brown Shirts. Your average Trump supporter holding a Trump flag and an American flag is an image Americans were already conditioned to fear. Had they never gone into the Capitol at all it still would have been to many the most frightening thing they'd seen in their lifetimes.This is not to diminish what happened on January 6th. No doubt it was terrifying for those who lived through it, but it is how they connected it to what they believe is a “white supremacist” uprising that ties into a greater wave of hysteria and fear. Fold in the idea that only Trump supporters are anti-vaxxers and anti-maskers and you have a full blown dehumanization campaign aimed at one group of people.Witches, Witches Everywhere. In the book Pendulum: How Generations of the Past Shape Our Present and Predict Our Future, which is a loose interpretation of Neil Howe's The Fourth Turning, Howe's 80-year generational theory is divided into four 20 year-cycles, from a “me” cycle (individualism) to the “we” cycle (collectivism). The authors Michael Drew and Roy Williams warned of what they call the “witch hunt phase.” As the “we” cycle winds down, the purges begin. Even though the book was written in 2011 or thereabouts, they tag the year 2023 as the height of our “witch hunt phase,” writing:Senator Joseph McCarthy was an American promoter of this witch-hunt attitude at America's most recent “We” Zenith of 1943 (see the “House Un-American Activities Committee,” 1937–1953); Adolf Hitler was the German promoter (see the Holocaust, 1933–1945); and Joseph Stalin was the Soviet promoter (see the Great Purge, 1936–1938). Our hope is that we might collectively choose to skip this development as we approach the “We” Zenith of 2023. If enough of us are aware of this trend toward judgmental self-righteousness, perhaps we can resist demonizing those who disagree with us and avoid the societal polarization that results from it. A truly great society is one in which being unpopular can be safe.It has arrived right on schedule. Back in 1692, the Puritans had come to America to flee religious oppression in England and were now building a “shining city on the hill.” The Puritans were already locked into fear paralysis by forces beyond their control. Native Americans fought hard to keep their territory, murdered Puritans, kidnapped their children, killed their livestock. An epidemic of smallpox hit the community hard and it was a brutal winter in 1692. It is not all that surprising given those conditions and frankly, given ours, that they would collectively snap.Into a utopia comes a major threat that triggers hysteria. In Salem, it was adolescent girls thrashing around on the floor - the reason? They were possessed by witches. The girls accused any random person. Once accused, they were brought before the Oyer and Terminer and usually found guilty because there were no lawyers, there was no evidence and the only education on offer was the Bible. Once convicted they could confess as a witch and live, or deny being a witch and be hanged in the town square with people they've known all their lives cheering on their deaths. 20 people had been hanged before the bubble of hysteria burst. When the Governor's wife was accused that was a bridge too far and the whole thing came crashing down like a house of cards. Sooner or later, all episodes of mass hysteria do evaporate and history takes care of the rest. This depends on the society as a whole getting a grip. When you see half the country as your enemy, that is very nearly impossible. We might be closing in on that moment but we are not there yet. Have you No Decency, Sir? The 1950s had all the markings of a manufactured utopia. Coming out of one of the most horrific eras in the history of mankind, World War II, American life in the 1950s had the facade of the same kind of “normalcy” as the American Left is living through today, only back then it was Conservative. It was the epitome of Americana - though it always must be noted that this was not true for many of the underserved. President Eisenhower, among the many great things he did, would end segregation in public schools and in the military. Back in the 1950s, like now, there was a happy alliance between the administrative state and Hollywood, or American culture. Many on the left were secretly Communist sympathizers, like many screenwriters and actors. They would be found out and Blacklisted after being brought before the HUAC and asked to “name names.” That was their version of a confession and it is seen as just as much of a dishonest move now. But it was the Republicans who were the main opponents as they tried to preserve what they believed was the American way of life. You can imagine how clearly defined that was in the 1950s.They believed their very way of life was threatened by Communism - freedom of speech, freedom of thought, freedom of religion, the right to rise in the free market system, to own property. And indeed, Stalin and other Communist dictators beat, tortured and starved millions of their own people to force compliance. There was no dissent allowed. Most lefties in America were blissfully unaware of just bad it was in Stalin's Russia. The propaganda machine made sure only the positive news got out, just like in modern day China now. The fear was that there were Communists everywhere injecting messages, spying on Americans, pretending to BE Americans. When actual Communists were uncovered, like the Rosenbergs, that kicked the hysteria into overdrive, making McCarthy a hero to the American public. He was so well liked that Eisenhower chose not to speak out against him when he was running for President in 1952. When McCarthy started targeting members of the military, it was too much for even a stalwart Republican like Ike. He set about a negative PR campaign against McCarthy and was largely responsible for not just his downfall but the end of the mass hysteria episode against Communists, though the Cold War would rage on until the 1980s.Racists, Transphobes, Misogynists everywhere. Two things of significance happened in 2008. Barack Obama became the first Black President and the government bailed out big banks to the tune of $700 billion. That year, two major revolutionary forces were born: Occupy Wall Street and the Tea Party. In 2014, another revolutionary force would become a gathering storm, Black Lives Matter. Occupy and the Tea Party began when social media was in its infancy. Obama was the first president to use Twitter to build his coalition online. It was seen as a smart way to campaign. Trump would do the same thing in the leadup to his run, around the same time - 2012. It was seen as the end of Humanity itself such that eventually Trump would be banned from the platform. Back in 2008, the Left of this country had already been well on our way towards building our utopian America, our own version of the Shining City on the Hill. We were the beautiful people, the celebrities, the Silicon Valley whiz kids, the filmmakers. We were on the right side of the environment, women's rights, LGBTQ rights. We were progressive, idealistic, fitness gurus, empowered women, who had spent the previous decade going to therapy and starting an anti-depressant regiment. We watched Oprah every day at 3pm. We vowed to do better, to be better, to offend no one. We were the “everybody gets a certificate” generation. Our “goodness” was in how responsible we were. We recycled. We cared about the oceans. We worried about bullies and school shooters. And yes, we HATED the Right. They were the worst this country had to offer. They were “bad” and we were “good” and the Obamas were the leaders of all of it. But we were also afraid of everything, even then. Our children were analyzed, scrutinized to see if they were sociopaths, psychopaths, bullies or geniuses. We drugged them, praised them, hoped for perfection but also wanted all of them to have an equal shot at success. They became teenagers afflicted with one disorder or another, which they wore like badges of honor, or identification. We did too. All of us on the left. We were both victimized by society's structure and empowered to disrupt it.Generation Z has now come of age knowing that they have to put people in categories by skin color, sex, gender and ideology. They know they have to announce who and what people are right off the bat and they somehow also know that the one thing you can't be is a “white cis gendered male.” They also are smart enough to know that what you think or what you say might get you in trouble so they self-censor.To challenge anything Obama did or said was considered, in itself, racism. This was especially true about the Tea Party and marginally true about Occupy Wall Street. People on the Left believe that Obama's win threatened the White Supremacist empire that is America and his very presence led to a White Supremacist uprising called the Tea Party, which would eventually birth the Freedom Caucus, Sarah Palin and Donald Trump, to say nothing of its ring leader, Steven K. Bannon.Racism would become fascism, which would become “white supremacy” which would become Domestic Terrorism. I never questioned that it was based on racism. I believed this 100%. That is why I, along with many parents around 2013, began to spread the ideas of Critical Theory without even realizing it. We believed our beloved President was not being accepted by the White Majority. We began to see racism everywhere too. We also saw injustice everywhere. So did our children who came of age online, half of them social justice warriors that now patrol social media like the Children Spies in 1984.The idea that we are all secretly racists or transphobes or misogynists or homophobes or rapists or we're just one old Tweet or old photo or slip of the tongue away from being exposed and outed is driving us all collectively insane. It was one thing when “Cancel Culture” was just a meme on Black Twitter. It was something driven by a community that had a collective voice online for the first time in American history. Eventually, though, it became obvious that Twitter was being used as an arena for public shaming and the mobilization of online mobs to destroy people's lives. The fear of being targeted is so strong that most in power do whatever they can to avoid it.Twitter's mob rule now translates to on the ground protests, riots and mobs. How quickly did Kenosha burn before any of the facts about the Jacob Blake case came out? Due process was out the window because almost everyone was caught up in the wave of panic and hysteria. We should take a lesson from how fast that traveled from social media to the near destruction of one town. It does not bode well for the future. Somehow no one seems to have put all of these things together - the uprisings from 2008, social media, the Summer of protest in 2020 and January 6th. “Cancel Culture” isn't dangerous because of Twitter. It's dangerous because corporations and now our government enact their own justice because of it. If the currency in an oligarchy is maintaining the image of “goodness” they will happily throw anyone under the bus to preserve theirs. We don't even need a dictatorship to police citizens in a Capitalist country. We just need the systems of Capitalism to adopt the ideology. And so they have. Vivek Ramaswamy has written a book called “Woke Inc” about this very thing. The average American citizen doesn't have a chance. There is not a corporation now, not a university, not a movie studio, or a book publishing house or a mainstream news outlet or a science lab that is not fully on board with the doctrine, who won't side with the mob to purge their companies of undesirables, to preserve their power and their image. All of the inane ways the big corporations are going “woke” embarasses them only they don't realize it. They are pleasing a small minority of loud zealots who police them and will report them for their thought crimes but they are alienating the majority who most definitely is not in favor of this fundamentalism. The same is true of schools and now of our government. The divide between the oligarchy and the working class is widening, and now with Joe Biden calling anyone who supports Trump, or resists their imposed doctrine, potentially a “domestic terrorist” or “white supremacist” what kinds of protections do our average citizens have? What lawyer would risk representing them? The more corporations comply with Biden's doctrine, and the fear and hysteria that goes along with it, the more dangerous our country becomes for people with no power and no status. A recent column in the Spectactor by Joel Kotkin warns:The new autocracy rises from a relentless economic concentration which has engendered a new and fabulously wealthy elite. Five years ago, around four hundred billionaires owned as much as half of the world's assets. Today, only one hundred billionaires own that share, and Oxfam reduces that number to a mere twenty-six. In avowedly socialist China, the top one percent of the population holds about one-third of the country's wealth, up from 20 percent two decades ago. Since 1978, China's Gini coefficient, which measures inequality of wealth distribution, has tripled.And:The time could be shorter than we think. The tech oligarchs are creating something similar to what Aldous Huxley called in Brave New World Revisited a “scientific caste system.” There is “no good reason,” Huxley wrote in 1958, that “a thoroughly scientific dictatorship should ever be overthrown.” It will condition its subjects from the womb so that they “grow up to love their servitude” and “never dream of revolution.” It will maintain a strict social order and provide enough diversion through drugs, sex and videos to keep their artificially narrowed minds occupied and sated.The fusion of government with large oligopolistic companies, and the technologically-enhanced collection of private information, allow the new autocracies to monitor our lives in ways that Mao, Stalin or Hitler would have envied. A rising tide of money and administrative power defines the rising autocracy. If we as citizens, whatever our political orientation, are not vigilant, our democracy will become an increasingly hollow vessel”Imagine a future when aritficial intelligence is tasked with policing our thoughts, our speech, our shopping habits, who we date, what we say online, what websites we visit. They can be as indifferent as Stalin's army. They can simply erase or disappear anyone. In its own way, Wall-E is about fighting back against authoritarian power disguised as “taking care” of its citizenry via artificial intelligence. There they lay, pudgy and compliant, zoned out on media, while their food is delivered to them. It is a wonderful metaphor for our potential future. With a government willing to sacrifice our image of strength abroad to satisfy panic and hysteria, and willing to use all tools at their disposal to stifle dissent, this future is not that unimaginable. While millions of Americans were mourning about the chaos in the streets and political insults thrown back and forth in 2020, author of The Invitation to the Shining City, GM Jarrard, had turned to “binge-watching” the new TV series, The Chosen. “While I was engrossed in the series by Dallas Jenkins, I felt real kinship with the people at the time of Christ who were under Roman rule. It occurred to me that we take our freedoms for granted, and that despite the promise of America being the ‘Shining City on the Hill,' our way of life, even our freedoms are in peril. We need to remember what we learned in elementary school when we memorized the Pledge of Allegiance about being ‘one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.'” “The Chosen was the catalyst that started my writing The Invitation.” “And, unlike our forebears, like the Pilgrims, the Puritans or the Pioneers, there is no New World to flee to. My book, The Invitation to the Shining City, proposes such an ‘exit strategy.' Using the theme of John Winthrop's speech to his fellow Puritans while en route to New England on the ship Arabella, I cite his vision to establish a place where [we] ‘follow the counsel of Micah, to do justly, to love mercy, to walk humbly with our God. For this end, we must be knit together, in this work, as one man.'” The book poses the question, “If there were a place, as the Puritan founder of Boston first described it, where the people were of one heart, one mind, live in righteousness and lift one another's burdens, what would you be willing to pay to go there?” Chapter One begins in Israel two years after its establishment in 1948 on the beach in Caesarea, right below Herod's aqueduct. Jonathan Blum, a military attaché with the U.S. Embassy and a veteran of the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials, accepts a strange meeting with a mysterious man named John who has approached him about an intriguing job offer. He is given his invitation. In a surprising turn of events, Jonathan accepts the position, one where he will eventually become the mentor to a young couple, Joey and Dana Kunz. When they finally give in to a request from the husband's 90-year-old grandmother to take her to a place “to rehabilitate in the hot springs at a Grand Hotel and Spa,” their world is turned upside down. They discover that “grandma” does more than rehabilitate, and so does everyone around her. When the couple inquires about the “entrance fee,” they learn that to live there, you have to be invited. To quality for an invitation, they commit to gather others to join them. But, along the way, they encounter opposition in the form of media attacks, charges of embezzlement and even a kidnapping. The real challenge comes from within–to qualify, Joey has to make the same decision that the young prince in the New Testament couldn't make: to sell all that he had and give it to the poor and follow the Savior. The Kunz's story of opportunity and opposition gives renewed hope to readers in a time of chaos where there is no ‘new world' to flee to. In the words of the Prophet Elisha to his apprentice as the young man's eyes were opened and he could see legions of angels round about, “they that be with us are more tha they that be with them.” (2 Kings 6:16) Yes, the book is fiction. But, it reminds people of faith what God has been telling people for generations. Hear how the greatest sermon of the millennium inspired one of America's greatest presidents on this special episode of Faith and Liberty Rediscovered with Alan Crippen.Ronald Reagan, for nearly two decades, had spoken about a "shining city on a hill", an allusion to the gospel of Matthew chapter 5 and verse 14. Historians would later recognize this biblical image to signify the president's political vision in moral and economic terms. In his parting words to the nation, Reagan revisited this image and explained its meaning. "In my mind [that shining city] built on rocks stronger than oceans, wind-swept, God-blessed, and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace, a city with free ports that hummed with commerce and creativity, and if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and the heart to get here," Reagan said. "That's how I saw it and see it still.” The conviction, clarity, and eloquence with which Reagan spoke is remarkable. There's a reason this speech is famous and still rings true today. But, what inspired Reagan's words? What gripped his heart with such conviction? The great President was inspired by a great sermon. In fact, it was called the greatest sermon of the millennium by Harvard University's Peter Gomes. The sermon was entitled, “A Model of Christian Charity” and was written and delivered by a Puritan named John Winthrop. John Winthrop was a statesman who sought to bring all British institutions under the kingship of Christ. As a Suffolk County squire and magistrate, he tried to reform the British justice system and the Church of England, but King Charles I and his regime thwarted those efforts. The King dissolved Parliament (a bastion of Puritan influence) in 1628, and arrested and imprisoned nine of its leading Puritan members. That's when Winthrop and others decided to set sail for the English colonies in America, where they hoped to create a culture of Christian faith and discipline.Among Winthrop's most influential actions for the future of America was his investment in a faith-based venture capital company, the Governor & Company of the Massachusetts Bay in New England, where he quickly rose to prominence as its CEO. The company would help make a new England in the wilds of America. It was to be a model society for a watching world. Winthrop said that this could not be “a better or more honorable work” to undertake.Winthrop applied manpower to his vision by assembling in Southampton's port a fleet of ships—the Arbella, Talbot, Ambrose, and Jewel—that transported more than 1,000 colonists to Salem, Mass. It was in this pivotal moment that Winthrop gave his "Christian Charity" sermon, in which he offered no certainty of success. In fact, borrowing from nautical imagery that certainly could not have been lost on his hearers, who were about to hazard their lives at sea, Winthrop posits the possibility of a political shipwreck. Then he says, “Now the only way to avoid this shipwreck and to provide for our posterity is to follow the counsel of Micah: to do justly, to love mercy, to walk humbly with our God.” Winthrop closed his sermon: “We are entered into a covenant with Him for this work…. For we must consider that we shall be like a City upon a Hill; the eyes of all people are upon us.” One of the most important features of this story is Winthrop's integrative vision for faith-inspired economics and politics – that the Massachusetts Bay Colony was as much a Biblical economic vision as it was a political vision. In other words, Winthrop understood the virtue of love was the basis for economic and political prosperity. Reagan understood this as well. The late president remains a conservative icon because, like Winthrop, he was a “fusionist” who melded religiously motivated social ideals and values with economic principles. For a nation revisiting its own first principles, perhaps a closer look at Winthrop is in order. His story offers an example for the integration of economic and social concerns under a compelling biblical vision of love for society. When faith guides liberty toward justice the shining city is in Reagan's words, “built on rocks stronger than oceans, wind-swept, God-blessed, and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace. That was the vision of Winthrop and Reagan…and I hope by God's grace, ours as well. The United States used to be that “Shining City on the Hill,” as President Ronald Reagan described it. The world looked up to us and many sought to model their governments after ours. No more. We've lost our claim to being the showcase for democracy. Blame it on the thuggishness of President Donald Trump, blame it on a do-nothing Congress, blame it on the whining and finger-pointing of the two political parties. Jeff, we broke everything We broke our worth ethic by rewarding identity instead of merit We broke the systematic equality of opportunity that we had finally achieved and now we're replacing it with a perpetual war between identities We broke the dollar with insane deficit spending, we just haven't realized it yet …and we're about to break the virtuous traditions of savings and self-reliance with runaway inflation, impoverishing our conservative elders We broke any chance of good government going forward by embracing censorship We broke the public school system by forgetting that schools are for the students and not for the teachers We broke our universities by financing their descent into nonsense, and now we're going to break peoples' expectations of fairness with student loan forgiveness We broke the nuclear family and that meant we broke our children's childhoods … and we broke our children's adulthoods too with an unrealistic starting wage that means they'll never get that important starter job We broke our cities by abandoning law & order We broke housing with unconstitutional takings from landlords and that will get worse with runaway property taxation. Developers will flee We broke our world-leading corporate culture because so many employees will never go back to the office We broke industry by outsourcing to China anything that seemed hard And we're breaking the very concept of America as a country with this opening of our borders. Instead of a nation we'll just be an area of soil with people and stuff on it. Taking in all the oppressed and impoverished peoples of the world may be a kind-hearted notion, but it's completely unattainable and all these promises are only promises of future heartbreak. Just like how we're giving up our energy independence to countries that pollute vastly more, the principle known as the tragedy of the commons tells us that doing these things unilaterally is pointless self-immolation None of these new ideas scales or sustains, which i guess is about what you would expect if you put uneducated, inexperienced, self-indulgent cynics with no knowledge of the development of civilization in charge of all the decisions I just hope the vaccines of Operation Warp Speed, where our tiny Shining City on the Hill yet again saved the planet, doesn't turn out to have been our last great gift to humanity But I don't want you to be sad, Jeff, so here's a joke: Two peanuts were in a bad neighborhood. Transcript: Hello, this is Pastor Don Willeman of Christ Redeemer Church. Welcome to The Kingdom Perspective. Ronald Reagan (1911-2004), the 40th president of the United States, was an optimist. His news conferences and even political debates were seasoned with jokes and levity refreshing in the world of Washington. Even his political opponents were compelled to appreciate his positive public engagement. This optimism meant he was not afraid to go toe-to-toe with the repressive totalitarian Soviet empire, famously demanding in Berlin, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” (Berlin Wall Speech, July 1987) What gave Reagan this optimism? Well, I think a big part of this is that he had imbibed the spirit of Western civilization, which itself had been marinated in centuries of Christian ethos. Christianity is an optimistic, forwarding looking, freedom loving religion. Now, to be clear, this is not to say there are not reasons to be negative about the history of Western civilization and the Christians that populated its landscape. Slavery, rapacious colonialism, genocide—to name a few—are all fair critiques. Nonetheless, any reasonable reading of history has to note that these negatives are not unique to the West. What's unique is the progressive spirit that has fought against them—in many instances all but eradicating these evils. These negatives are not caused by the West's Christian heritage. Rather, a good argument can be made that it is precisely the influence of Christianity that allowed the West so effectively to battle against these evils (to investigate this claim, see, e.g. Confronting Christianity: 12 Hard Questions for the World's Largest Religion by Rebecca McLaughlin, Dominion: How the Christian Revolution Remade the World by Tom Holland, Timothy Keller's chapter in “The Church is Responsible for So Much Injustice” in The Reason for God, Why You Think the Way You Do: The Story of Western Worldviews from Rome to Home by Glenn Sunshine, and Poverty and Leadership in the Later Roman Empire by Peter Brown). Reagan encapsulated this optimistic/progressive sentiment with his numerous references to a “shining city on a hill”. Of course, this phrase was not unique to Reagan. He got it from John Winthrop (1587/8-1649), a founding leader of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Governor Winthrop, however, did not coin this phrase either. The phrase actually originates with Jesus, who said that His people will be a “City on a Hill”, lighting the way for a new world, a new way of living (Matthew 5:13-16). Something to think about from The Kingdom Perspective. “Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. What is happening to the soul of America? It’s a question the whole world is asking as Americans start voting in the most bizarre general election in their history. Yet regardless of who wins the 2020 Presidential race, it’s clear that something is going horribly wrong in the world’s oldest democracy. Tempting as it may be to blame America’s malaise exclusively on Donald Trump, to do so would be naive. Trumpism is a symptom of a disease that’s ravaged America’s body politic for generations. In this episode we meet the American author and political commentator, Jared Yates Sexton to discuss his new book "American Rule: How A Nation Conquered The World But Failed Its People". We explore the myth of American exceptionalism, and how white identity, evangelical Christianity, and conspiracy theories like QAnon are weaponised in American politics. Rabbit Hole is an 8-part podcast series produced by the NYT tech columnist, Kevin Roose. The show explores how the internet is affecting us and what can happen when we move our lives online. It doesn’t look exclusively at Q Anon per se but the wider digital environment, and how You Tube in particular has been directing people to extremist content for years. If you’d like to understand more about the Satanic panic of the 1980s, Gimlet Media has produced a brilliant podcast series called Conviction: American Panic. Conviction tells the story John Quinney who grew up in the 1980s and at the age of 10 falsely accused his own father of being the leader of an underground satanic cult that was sacrificing babies and sexually abusing children. What John’s family didn’t realise at the time was that right across America there were hundreds of families being swept up in this religious panic, and by the time it subsided scores of people were in jail on little to no evidence. It’s one of the most bizarre chapters in American judicial history, but it’s also very relevant to today’s satanic hysteria and the cult of QAnon. NPR’s regular podcast ‘Throughline’ explores stories from history that have a modern day resonance, and two recent episodes are particularly relevant to this episode; Conspiracy, which delves into how and why conspiracy theories are fundamental to American life, and how they’re so easily manipulated by political opportunists; and The Evangelical Vote which looks at what it means to be an evangelical Christian in America today and how evangelicals have become a powerful electoral bloc in US politics. Throughline has also just started a new series called “(mis)Representative Democracy” which unpacks some of the myths and popular assumptions about American democracy. The first episode tells the not-so-democratic history of how and why America’s Electoral College was created - the body that elects the President of the USA and which you’re likely to hear a lot more about over the coming weeks and months. The long history of white supremacism and systemic racism in American comes up several times in this episode, although we didn’t have time to explore it in depth. Scene On Radio, produced by the Centre for Documentary Studies at Duke University, is a Peabody-nominated podcast hosted by veteran broadcaster John Biewen. He recently produced and co-presented a 14-part series called ‘Seeing White’ which explores what’s happening in mainstream white identity in America (not the KKK and neo-Nazis) and how the idea of whiteness has evolved over the centuries. The series also has a study guide and fully referenced bibliography for further reading and listening. More recently, Scene On Radio produced a 12-part series earlier this year called “The Land That Never Has Been Yet”. It tells the less well known story of democracy in America going right back to the beginning of the republic. Before attempting to explain what Conor McPherson’s The Birds is, running now at Sebastopol’s Main Stage West, best make it clear what it isn’t. It is not a stage adaptation of the Alfred Hitchcock film. It’s not set in Bodega Bay, there is no schoolhouse full of screaming children, and no one is trapped in a phone booth by marauding sea gulls. Nor is it a straightforward adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s original 1952 novella. It’s not set in post WWII England. It’s not about a war veteran working on a farm with his family. It’s not a metaphor for the aerial bombardment endured by England during the Second World War. The only thing the three have in common is the premise of nature turning on man in the form of indiscriminate and deadly attacks of the avian variety. McPherson takes that premise and wraps a human story around it with elements whose genesis may be found in… well, we’ll get to that. It begins with a man and a woman, Nat (Nick Sholley) and Diane (Liz Jahren), taking refuge from the birds in an abandoned New England Farm House. Nat is in the throes of some illness, so Diane nurses Nat back to health. Together they map out a plan for survival. Not knowing if there’s a world to return to, they begin to settle into sort of a domestic arrangement when the balance of that arrangement is set askew by the arrival of Julia (Rae Quintana) and a visit from a “neighbor” (Anthony Abaté). Soon, the birds may become the least of their problems when it comes to their survival. The Birds is a challenging mixture of horror, thriller and character study. It’s an oddly constructed piece with some scenes lasting only seconds and others seeming to jump in time past significant action. The play’s structure works against it as a sense of dread or danger was often dissipated by the requirement of having the cast rearrange the set or move prop pieces. Still, it does manage to have a couple of nice jolts in it. What The Birds has going for it is an excellent cast and MSW’s naturally claustrophobic setting. Nick Sholley (last seen at MSW in A Steady Rain) brings another seriously flawed, slightly unhinged character to vivid life. Liz Jahren is very good in the role of Diane, effectively playing a character who starts out as bedrock of sense and purpose but who eventually crumbles under the pressure, both real and imagined. Rae Quintana’s Julia is a character of many shades and quite possibly shady. Anthony Abaté has the least amount of stage time, but that time is memorable. Director Elizabeth Craven doubles as Set Designer and, as I have come to expect from Main Stage West, she packs a lot of set into its relatively small space. While the interior of the house takes up the complete stage, a sense of depth and the outside world is achieved through lighting and especially by Doug Faxon’s sound design. Nary a feather is seen on stage, but the birds – aurally - are omnipresent. McPherson’s plays (Shining City, The Seafarer) often have a supernatural or spiritual component to them. One might assume that the use of du Maurier’s original concept of the destruction of the human race by birds would fit that bill but, as I alluded to in the opening paragraph, I think it actually goes a bit deeper. At its core, what McPherson presents in his adaptation is the story of a man and woman, possibly the only humans on earth. Their (relatively) idyllic existence is challenged by temptation in the form of Julia. The seeds of mistrust are sown by the appearance of a Mephistophelian neighbor. That mistrust leads to actions that result in their leaving (or self-banishment from) the comfort and safety of their surroundings. Could it be that Conor McPherson’s The Birds is a very twisted retelling of the Book of Genesis and Adam and Eve? The Birds runs through April 23rd. Visit mainstagewest.com.

You might call it historical, perhaps you might even reference it as monumental - the 2016 general election was one for the record books - no doubt. The polls, the pundits, the media were all caught snoozing. Perhaps it was in between their snoring-bouts when Americans captured their country back. This was an American Revolution like we've never seen before! I have many observations throughout this election cycle - with the biggest being that I think we were at the tipping point! Millions of Americans felt the same way and responded with their vote. With political ratings in the basement, there is a yearning to once again capture that 'Shining City on a Hill'. The thing about death is, it’s not negotiable. Sooner or later, we all have to face it. Till then, it’s hanging out there, somewhere, waiting for us. And one way we deal with that is by experiencing books, movies, songs, poetry and plays about the inevitability of death. Somehow, when glimpsing the grim reaper through the arts, we feel a little better because, I don’t know, maybe watching other people deal with the specter of mortality makes it all seem more normal. Or something. If that’s your take, then a pair of just-opened plays make be just your cup of tea, since the inevitability of death hangs over both of them like an ax dangling above a doorway in a condemned cabin in the middle of an earthquake. First, there’s Conor McPherson’s evocative drama "Shining City," now playing at Main Stage West, in Sebastopol. In this sly, slippery, deceptively unassuming play, the author of "The Weir" and "The Seafarer" has crafted a ghost story, of sorts, in which a troubled Dublin therapist named Ian, played with marvelous intensity and fragile humanity by Nick Sholley, gains a new client: an anxious insomniac named John, played brilliantly by John Craven. Poor old John. A steady-minded businessman, he is shaken by the fact that he keeps seeing the ghost of his recently deceased wife. And she doesn’t seem happy. Unable to sleep, afraid to enter his own house, John believes he’s being haunted for certain unspoken sins. Ian, convinced his new client is simply struggling with feelings of grief and unresolved guilt, gently coaxes the old man toward facing his fears, all the while carrying his own soul-crushing battle with shame and despair. With carefully crafted delicacy, the playwright takes us through Ian’s increasingly powerful therapy sessions with John, scenes that play out against a pair of shattering close encounters Ian has with the fierce-but-frail Neassa (Ilana Niernberger) the mother of Ian’s child, and with Laurence (John Browning) a sensitive street hustler who brings Ian an unexpected understanding of how the world works. Elegantly staged by director Beth Craven, beautifully acted by the entire ensemble - with special kudos to Craven for the astonishing twenty-minute monologue that comes mid-way through the show - this rich, emotionally powerfully story is more than just a chilling ghost story. In the end, "Shining City" - glowing with intelligence, humor and humanity - reveals itself as a lyrical, lush look at the conversations we have, and the choices we all make, to feel alive in a world haunted by the ghosts of our past decisions. Next up, "Bonnie and Clyde: the musical." It is widely known that the notorious Depression-era outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrows died violently in a hail of gunfire. In a car. In Texas. In composer Frank Wildhorn’s musical reworking of the bank robbers’ lives, the legendary tale begins at the end, the sound of gunfire, the flash of light, and famous fugitives’ bloody bodies dead in their car. Ivan Menchell’s clever script then jumps back in time to Bonnie and Clyde’s childhoods, gradually working the story’s way back to where it began. It’s an effective choice. As the title characters, Taylor Bartolucci and James Bock have some killer chemistry, thick enough to spread on a baguette, and they are matched in poise and presence by Scottie Woodard and Heather Buck as Clyde’s brother Buck and sister-in-law Blanche. Barry Martin, as a local preacher, brings some impressive southern gospel charm. The somewhat uneven musical score does have a few strong moments, mostly when emphasizing the tragic love story at the heart of the play. On Jesse Dreikosen’s first-rate set of jagged wooden slats, director Craig Miller keeps the tension building and building and building, right to end. Do Creative People Have to be Self-Destructive? New York Times writer Samuel G. Freedman asks, “Can the forces that make you creative also kill you?” “Can you live with control and yet create free of restraint?” “Can you live enough of the dark side to tell the tale without becoming a casualty?” Freedman's curiosity is well founded. History is littered with the corpses of creative geniuses who were self-destructive. Vincent Van Gogh cut off his own ear and mailed it to his girlfriend. Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko would likely have made out the mailing label and taped up the box. Rothko is the lightweight of this trio. His most valuable painting is worth only about 80 million dollars, while Van Gogh and Pollock have paintings worth 150 million each. Nobel laureates Hemingway and Faulkner are the opening names on a Who's Who list of alcoholic authors. James Joyce, Dorothy Parker, Jack Kerouac, Truman Capote, Hunter S. Thompson and dozens of others trot faithfully behind. Hendrix, Joplin, Cobain and Winehouse are the high-stepping drum majors in a holiday parade of musicians who flirted with death until it finally seduced them. Each of these artists deserved better than what they gave themselves. In her research paper, Creativity, the Arts, and Madness, Dr. Maureen Neihart says, “The belief that madness is linked with creative thinking has been held since ancient times. It is a widely popular notion.” In his book, Creativity and Madness: New Findings and Old Stereotypes, Dr. Albert Rothenberg says, “Deviant behavior, whether in the form of eccentricity or worse, is not only associated with persons of genius or high-level creativity, but it is frequently expected of them.” But we still haven't answered Freedman's questions. Let me do that for you now: Q: “Can the forces that make you creative also kill you?” A: There are no “forces that make you creative.” Practice and determination are what make a person good at basketball, ice skating or cliff diving. The same is true of creativity. Q: “Can you live with control and yet create free of restraint?” A: Yes. Q: “Can you live enough of the dark side to tell the tale without becoming a casualty?” A: Can a man fight in a horrible war and return home safely to the people he loves? Examine the life of a creative genius who got lost in the dark and you'll find that he or she had no partner watching out for them. When Pennie says, “Honey, help me carry the trash to the curb,” it's not because she needs help with the trash. I'm always annoyed that she broke my concentration in the same way a pot smoker is annoyed when you harsh their mellow. But I help her carry the trash to the curb. As we fall ever deeper into creative thought, we float weightlessly in a silent world underwater where time stands still and everything is beautiful. But it is dangerous to go swimming alone. Be sure someone who loves you ties a rope to your leg so they can haul you up when you've been under too long. Self-talk is the other key to keeping your balance. Do you want to drown in the darkness alone? All you have to do is say to yourself, “No one understands me… I'll never be appreciated… Some people have all the luck but nothing ever works out for me… It just wasn't meant to be.” Each of us believes what we hear ourselves say. The maternal side of my DNA includes a strong predisposition to depression and suicide. I am familiar with that darkness. The most effective antidote I've found is to tell Pennie 2 or 3 times a day about some small thing that makes me happy. Many of the things I choose to celebrate are admittedly stupid but the technique works anyway. “This bowl of beans and rice is really hitting the spot...
Memoirists and novelists James Brown (This River), Seth Greenland (Shining City), Diana Wagman (Skin Deep), and Leslie Schwartz (Angels Crest) will discuss the art and craft of fiction versus narrative nonfiction, in a panel discussion moderated by Meghan Daum (Life Would Be Perfect If I Lived in That House). This is sure to be a fascinating discussion among terrific local writers, and should not be missed! James Brown is the author of several novels, including Lucky Town, and the memoirs, The Los Angeles Diaries, and This River. He received a Nelson Algren Award in Short Fiction and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. His work has appeared in numerous publications, including GQ, The New York Times Magazine, and The Los Angeles Times Magazine. Brown teaches in the MFA Program at Cal State San Bernardino.
