The Last Journey Home a YouTube. In The Line Of Fire... Sean Zatorsky of DAATH, Chimaira and a slew of other bands joins me for this wild chat as we talk about my favorite city in Atlanta, and how I love the melting pot of cultures there and how it comes out in the music of the area as well, and how it has informed him as a musician since living there over the last 20 years. We also get into some heavy topics, such as how American culture seemingly does away with any of it's past in favor of "new" and "better" while other countries seem to take pride in it's rich history, but maybe that too is a detriment to it's people as well. We go deep into talking about supernatural things, which lead us to talking about some real life shit that we were both dealing with, and how our relationship was really started over me reaching out to him after the passing of his close friend and bandmate Joey Jordison. DEEP CHAT, hopefully you all enjoy it. Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Amahiru over Zoom video! Amahiru is the new musical powerhouse of Frédéric Leclercq (Kreator, Sinsaenum, Ex-Dragonforce) and SAKI (Mary’s Blood, an all-female metal band from Japan). Their friendship began in 2015 when Mary’s Blood played as the support band for Dragonforce in Hong Kong. Frédéric and SAKI got along very quickly and it didn’t take long before they started working on a musical project together. In the following years they exchanged many ideas and Frédéric finally came to Japan in March 2019 to finish the songs. So the music of Amahiru is just a mixture of Kreator and Mary’s Blood?“No, it is much more than that”, as Frédéric Leclercq explains. “I’m influenced by many artists, pretty much anything I hear I can consider an influence and music should be the reflection of that. With Amahiru I personally wanted to do something groovy and melodic and still metal/hard rock. We didn’t want to make 12 songs sounding the same. SAKI and I have a lot in common musically and it was really easy to work together in the same direction. I’m not going to pinpoint which parts, but I can hear Pantera, Extreme, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, MSG, Iron Maiden, Megadeth…the list goes on.” Although you would still classify the album as a “metal album”, you cannot ignore the oriental elements that Saki brought in. Especially the Shakuhachi (traditional Japanese woodwind instrument), which was recorded by the Japanese virtuoso Kifu Mitsuhashi, gives the world of Amahiru a great, exotic touch. Some prominent musicians from the metal scene have taken over the other roles in the band. Coen Janssen from Epica, who has also played keyboards in several Dragonforce productions, joined them first. Then came Mike Heller, known as the super drummer of Fear Factory and Raven. The biggest challenge was to find a suitable singer for the band. “Originally we wanted to have more traditional metal vocals”, Frédéric Leclercq describes. “But when I came to Japan to finish the songs, SAKI and I realized that we needed something more… ballsy.”Then he met Archie Wilson. The vocalist from the UK may be less well known than other musicians in this band, but he is obviously the key to Amahiru’s music, as Frédéric confirms. “He has a strong voice, a great sense of rhythm and he is totally versatile. High notes are no problem for him and he can be melodic and aggressive at the same time – the perfect match for Amahiru and the last missing piece of the puzzle”.Amahiru may sound like a Japanese word, but it is not actually. Oddly enough, it was coined by Frédéric himself, not by SAKI. And the word was born in his dream. “We were trying to find a name and I had a dream in which someone was asking me to sign a contract for this band, Amahil, and the number 13 kept appearing in the contract. When I woke up, I actually remembered the dream vividly and started to do my little “thinking process”. Amahil sounded ok, but what if a Japanese person had to pronounce it? A ma hi ru . Ok, does it mean anything? I googled the name, nothing. Then I tried “Hamahiru” just for a different spelling sake, and here is the freaky thing: “Hamahiru” means 13 in Basquian . AND I DONT SPEAK BASQUIAN. I texted Saki immediately, told her the story and we were sold!”Amahiru’s self-titled debut album, which was mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren and produced by Frédéric Leclercq himself, we just released! We want to hear from you! Amahiru are a new musical powerhouse that can trace its genesis back to a time when bands were still touring and live concerts were a regular event. Not long ago but it feels like an eternity. On that fateful night, Mary’s Blood from Japan were supporting Dragonforce and two of the respective members struck up a friendship based on mutual respect that simmered from that moment before culminating in a writing and recording session in Japan last year with the result being the band and debut album Amarihu. Those two members were Frédéric Leclercq (Kreator, Sinsaenum, Ex-Dragonforce) & Saki (Mary’s Blood) with the pair creating an irrepressible musical connection of East meets West that has translated beautifully to verse.Coen Janssen of Epica was the first to join. Then came Mike Heller, extraordinary drummer of Fear Factory and Raven and last, but not least, Archie Wilson joining on vocals, adding an essential part to Amahiru’s music with his powerful voice, his great sense of rhythm and his versatility.Despite the musical pedigree of the collective members, it is possibly the lesser-known of the star-studded line-up that elevates Amahiry from being an assembly of well known and talented musicians into a cohesive unit that looks set to take the music world as prisoner to their sonic embrace.Wilson – who was in Australia late last year as vocalist for the touring Disturbed tribute band – has shone majestically on the already released singles from the upcoming album, displaying an assurance and quality that belies his relatively unknown status.“He's amazing,” Leclerq agreed. “I think he's the... every aspect of the band… I wouldn't say he is the only reason, but he is one of the reasons why the album sounds so good in my opinion. While we were writing stuff we had someone else in mind. Originally we were gonna ask Mark from Dragonforce but the more we were writing music we thought he wasn't going to fit so we needed another voice but I couldn't think who was going to do that. Then ping! The light went off and said 'how about that Archie guy that I met? He's pretty cool and has a great voice’ so I sent him a song to try which was "Bringing Me Down" and we received his version and said that's it. It was exactly the element we were missing to make the album. We have a song like "Samurai" that is very thrash, then a song like "Lucky Star" is very prog and then you have "Bringing Me Down" which is more groovy and has some extreme elements and Archie makes the whole thing. He was the missing ingredient to make everything sound so organic and the feeling of the band. He's got an amazing voice, very versatile, he can be very aggressive and has a great sense of rhythm. A very powerful, manly voice that can reach high notes as well but remains powerful. He's just an amazing singer".In the full interview Fred talks in greater detail about the album musically, runs us through the couple of songs already released and if they are a good representation of the album as a whole, recording the album in Japan and the writing process with Saki, playing multiple instruments on the album and who he thinks will fill those roles when the band eventually makes it back on stage and more.

HEAVY Music Interviews

Late last year Australian audiences were introduced to U.K tribute band Chop Suey, performing, of course, songs made famous by System of a Down. It heralded a new era in this country, with fans flocking to each show and possibly finally putting to rest the public indifference to international tribute acts."That tour was fantastic," enthused drummer and founding member Andre Joyzi. "I'm so grateful we got to bring a tribute band across the world to play in Australia. It was something I started doing about four years ago to fill in the gaps between my bigger international tours because I am also a roadie. Tribute bands are a fantastic way for me to keep active as a drummer and also I get to play songs from bands that I love. I don't have to release an album or anything like that so it's pretty cool (laughs)."Joyzi is a man who lives and breathes his passion. From being on the road with successful bands as part of their road crew to touring with bands as their drummer, he has long believed in the notion that success is something that must be earnt and never taken for granted. He has played with, and for, some of the biggest names in metal, in the meantime constantly learning and growing as a musician and person. His work ethic and commitment is beyond reproach and should be the case study for any aspiring musician looking to turn their passion into their life."When I was 23 - I'm 37 now - I realised that if you want to be authentic and write your own music then your chances of making it as a professional are slimmer," he said. "To me, the priority was to make it as a professional metalhead. I just didn't want to be surrounded by normal people. Also, there's nothing more I like doing than playing drums so I realised that if I was playing covers or playing in tribute bands or playing in originals bands, it didn't matter. I decided to play everything that came my way which would increase my chances so that's literally what happened. I'm probably never gonna be the drummer of System of a Down (laughs) but now I have five tribute bands and it never gets boring."Joyzi is best known as skinsman for Breed 77 who seemingly called time on their career just over four years ago, but he shakes his head when I suggest the band had played their last show."To be perfectly honest, the way it happened we never said goodbye," he stressed. "We went to do the last show, knowing it was going to be the last show for a while, and we just... it's weird because the band has been going for 20 years and obviously there are strong personas there. Everyone has their own and... again, we never said goodbye to each other. We all want to do it and we all love it and we talk to each other sometimes. We do want to get back together and do something but... we're waiting. It is an awesome band and it would be a shame to not get back together."From touring as an active member of Breed 77 to touring as a roadie for Dragonforce and Cradle of Filth, Joyzi insists life on the road is basically similar as a member of the band or crew, with one main difference."I would say the main thing is when you have your own roadies you're a rock star," he laughed. "When you're a roadie yourself you're an assistant rockstar. The main difference is when you're a roadie you work your ass off for longer hours and the glamorous part is pretty much gone - apart from the travel and seeing the world on your days off. I definitely prefer doing it as a drummer, that's for sure (laughs). Its been a fantastic learning experience though. I love doing a bit of everything and I have to say as a roadie I love doing the big festivals. You have to be so precise with things and everything has to be perfect. I love that high pressure but tours were fun maybe the first 100 shows or so but now its more of the drumming and less of the roadie work. You work long hours but it can be a lot of fun as well. When it's a big production as we have in Dragonforce when you get to the end of the show you think, I did that. I was part of that."Joyzi has had the honour of working with some of the biggest names in metal drumming, with Joey Jordison (Slipknot, Sinsaenum), Marthus (Cradle Of Filth), Adrian Erlandsson (At The Gates, The Haunted), Gee Anzalone (Dragonforce), Aquilus Priester (W.A.S.P) and Tim Yeung (Divine Heresy, Morbid Angel) among the many he has toured with. Despite admitting to missing being behind the kit himself, Joyzi also points out that working with such legends of the scene has had a positive flow-on effect with his own drumming."They're all really different," he smiled when pressed on which one was his favourite to work with. "I think I've been really lucky that none of them has been a dickhead (laughs). That is the favourite part of what I do because I get to see world-class drummers up close and most of the times I am right next to them and see what they do and it's a constant learning experience. I've learnt from working with all of them, both in the sense of drumming as well as the little nerdy things that go with it. Because I have worked with Gee a lot I would say his set up is the hardest. It is the most advanced because the rack system we use for him is not conventional at all. Also, because its harder than everything else we are both more perfectionist about it so it's more challenging and therefore more interesting. That's probably one of my favourites to do. Aquilus Priester's drumkit is something else as well (laughs). It's like a space shuttle with two floors. That was a lot of work but cool to put together. All of the drummers are super easy to work with. Joey Jordison and Tim Yeung I was on long tours with, like six to eight weeks, and I can't remember them ever complaining about anything. It was almost like everything was always perfect for them which made them very cool to work with."While the romance surrounding music sees many aspiring musicians dedicate their lives solely to one day playing on the big stage, the reality of life is that before that happens you must not only learn to play your chosen instrument, but you must also know the industry you are hoping to enter. Simply being a gun guitarist or a drummer with chops won't deliver the subliminal skills required to have a sustained career at the top. There are many unseen hurdles along the way and Joyzi agrees the way to give yourself the best possible chance of success is generally far from a straight line that rewards talent with success."If you want to be a master of your instrument - of course, if you focus all of your time to it you probably will master it - but it really depends on your priorities," he measured. "My priority was to succeed and become a professional. I didn't want to do anything outside heavy metal music. There was nothing that interested me aside from working with animals or being a paleontologist but that was too much time in school and I hated school (laughs). So I thought, fuck what can I do with my life that doesn't require school, so it was metal and that was it. I think trying to understand... the thing with heavy metal music and musicians is there's a lot of passion and sometimes people cease to use logic as well. If you want to be a professional you have to use logic and you need to think about it. It's a professional industry and there's plenty of jobs in it - for instance, being a drum tech is a step closer to being a drummer in a bigger band - so I think you need to increase your odds of succeeding. My formula was do everything that I could. There's nothing wrong with any job in music."Perhaps the biggest chapter of Joyzi's musical journey is about to be written with the subdued announcement last week that he has just put the final touches to new music in the form of a new project that is set to revolutionise heavy music as we know it. While many in the music industry have heard whispers that Joyzi was about to unleash something big, very few knew anything other than change was in the air. After seeing Joyzi's recent Facebook post revealing not only obscure references and hints but actual information, it seemed as though the planets were aligning and the full reveal may finally be forthcoming."I can tell you the same thing that I said on my post yesterday," he laughed, a little too mischievously for my liking. "We are the world's first Post- Nu-Metal supergroup called The Violent InZident and something is coming out on October 1. That's all I'm gonna tell you."Seizing on the term Post-Nu-Metal, I again pressed for more details, only to once again be rebuked with a laugh and knowing grin."We just think Nu Metal needs a new face and that's us," Joyzi smiled, before hanging up and leaving me, like many others the world over, determined to get some concrete answers.

As heavy music fans, we tend to follow our favourite musicians throughout their careers and all the different projects they start up or are apart of and this week's special guest co-host is a prime example of that as we say G'Day to legendary drummer Joey Jordison of the new, death/black metal hybrid Sinsaenum. The HEAVY AF supergroup is made up of various metal musicians including Frédéric Leclercq of Dragonforce, Stéphane Buriez from Loudblast, Dååth's Sean Zatorsky, Mayhem frontman Attila Csihar and SETH's Heimoth. The new band is brutally heavy and will be making their debut in Australia next week so we had to get him on to find out all about the band's conception for you and if his other side-project Vimic was still active, considering they never made it down under for fans. Also, Joey's old band Slipknot surprise released a new song on Halloween and you better believe we're going to give that bad boy a spin. There's also New Music from Whitechapel, While She Sleeps, Bring Me The Horizon and Behemoth, throwbacks from Cradle of Filth, Amenra, Once Human, Mayhem and heaps more #WoSUATW #JoeyJordison #Sinsaenum #Vimic #Slipknot #AllOutLife #DeathMetal #deathcore #HeavyMetal #Behemoth #CradleOfFilth #BringMeTheHorizon #BMTH #Ihsahn #Amenra #OnceHuman #Mayhem #Pagan #AustralianBands #Whitechapel #WhileSheSleeps #Podcast #MusicPodcast #WallOfSoundAU

In the indie segment, CHR treads into Doug's territory with Switzerland's Soulline. Heavy Metal Valhalla gives Doug an opportunity to gush on some industrial-tinged nu-metal from Static-X.

Meta-title! How metal of me to be very meta on a metal podcast that's also pretty meta. This week we have a bunch of news. Either new releases, singles, teasers or whatever from: Inanimate Existence, Darkthrone, Wardruna, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Sinsaenum, Lamb of God, Voivod, Shokran, Dark Tranquillity, Thy Catafalque, Fit for An Autopsy, The Agonist, Disillusion, Exotype, Native Construct and Serpentine Dominion. Also an analysis of how global metal is, Pelagic Records's starter kit, and a top 10 list of bands from Norway. While on the topic of top 10 lists, we do an impromptu "Top 10 songs that have the desired effect every time". Or as Eden calls it, "Evergreen songs" or something. Whatever. Then we have our bullshit philosophy corner on Hegelian dialectics and the early metal scene! Finally, we talk about No Man's Sky in the cool people section. Whew!
