The gang tries to rob the same bank this week as they review the bank heist comedy caper that you have never heard of before... Flypaper. With a stacked cast and a fun premise, this offbeat gem was unfairly derided by critics, and given just a 2 theater run on initial release. In part two of New Music Seminar MC Battle For World Supremacy, our last episode for season 2, we focus on the years; 1993 and 1994! I recount the stories I heard about 1993 with MF Grimm, Mad Skillz, and the '93 champion, Supernatural. As for '94, I explain how my writing for local Chicago publication The Flypaper, created a lane for me to have some “involvement” and a front-row seat to many of the key happenings at the seminar that year, including getting a chance to interview Bobbito Garcia, The Artifacts, Count Bass D, Hard 2 Obtain, Zev Love X, and Muddbones (Cage and Masai Bey) for an article in The Flypaper, which never came out, and ultimately inspired Caught In The Middle magazine, that I started planning with J-bird only weeks after the seminar. And, I share the memories of being at a showcase that had Indigenous Theory, Keith Murray, Rampage The Last Boy Scout, Notorious B.I.G, Craig Mack, and Original Flavor with Jay-Z. Plus, some insight on the actual MC battle itself, which was won by Judgemental from Chicago, who I was in town with. It's an action-packed episode!! Today's message is like a FLY STUCK on FLYPAPER, calling out, "ooooh, it smells so TASTY where I am. Come be like me." He promises freedom, but all the while he is ENTRAPPED and ENSLAVED.  We will let this potentially enticing fly teach this lesson.  Pictured like this, we will not trust that fly for a second. His end is coming and it is not looking pretty.  He is a lesson in caution and in warning.   I'm going to stay as far away from his experience as possible.  Let's listen to the fly today.Listen to another creature tomorrow at bewithme.us or write at bewithme.us@gmail.com

D.K. McKenzie—Warwick poet, pianist, and founder of The Poe Underground, a spoken word and music project—plays an original, improvised keyboard solo under his recording of July by Alexander Posey and Flypaper by D.K. McKenzie. July The air without has taken fever, Fast I feel the beating of its pulse, The leaves are twisted on the maple, In the corn, the autumn's premature, The weary butterfly hangs waiting, For a breath to waft him thither at the touch, But falls like truth unheeded, Into dust-blown grass and hollyhocks. The air without is blinding dusty, Cool I feel the breezes blow, I see the sunlight crowded on the porch, Grow smaller ‘til absorbed in shadow, And the far blue hills are changed to gray, And twilight lingers in the woods between, And now I hear the shower dancing, In the cornfield and the thirsty grass. Big L is regarded by many as one of the greats of his time, and rightfully so. This episode talks about Big L's skill as an MC, and how we first met, which included me being unintentionally dismissive...well it was somewhat intentional but I just didn't know who he was... As we go on a quest to trace some roots to his style, I talk about the Fearless Four, MC Shan, Juice Crew, & Lord Finesse. And eventually, we get to how my writing for The Flypaper in Chicago in '92, my first Hip Hop journalism gig, led to me meeting Grav, who formed a group called Indigenous Theory with Black Man Zeke, who I was the producer for previous to him being in that group. And, how that led to me being in Harlem in '94, where Grav was from, and running into a young rapper who was on the come up, named "L". This is the first episode of F.O.E. (Friends of EhKees) and I feel like it was only right to have my guy, Rizo, sitting across from me for it. Rizo recently opened up Statehouse Studios, his second studio, in the heart of Columbus. Statehouse will be, for the foreseeable future, the home of all ETC content and production, so it felt appropriate that the premiere of THIS series be done WITH him. People that have been following along since 2019 have heard me say “Naming it is the hardest part”. And it was. I didn't know how I was going to bring synergy to all of the content that I'm working on without overwhelming my audience or stepping on any of my toes. With the evolution and sustained growth of events that I help curate (Orange Soda, Native Tongues & 614 Day), and the content houses I work in (Columbus Can't Wait, FlyPaper-->FPM--FAM), and the work I do professionally (Creative Relations Consulting, the African American Male Wellness Agency, the AA Wellness Fatherhood Initiative, the Franklin County Fatherhood Coalition and NCUS Communications), I feared over saturation . I was struggling with how to carve out a space that speaks to MY passion of networking & exchanging ideas with other creatives helping to build and shape the culture here in The Cardinal. I finally landed on “Friends of EhKees” or FOE. Look at this like a captain log…a show where I can talk to my peers, mentors, rivals, and favorites about their journeys and exchange stories and ideas. I feel like there are some conversations that only those with experience operating in our lane would understand. Some perspectives you have to earn and those are the people I want to talk to. I'm excited about FOE because I feel like the people who are cut from the same cloth as me are chasing history, legacy and impact the same way that I am. That creates an climate of friendly competition and sharpening of iron that ultimately makes us all better. There are a number of reasons why this name and acronym work and I'm excited get into that more with the first episode. ETC was always about creating the infrastructure to help folk discover community and navigate local culture. I'm hoping with FOE, that we will be able to dive into the genius that is creating and shaping that colture. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/etc-by-us/message

Unfortunately, the art world can be flypaper for dysfunctional people, and we all know someone who has borne the brunt of that instability! For today's show, a few artists have written in to tell their Art World Horror Stories, including Ed Whitmore, who shares how he was treated by a mentally unstable gallery owner who approached him to present a solo exhibition as an emerging artist. Caitlin Burnett tells us how a fire in a laundry room laid claim to all the art she had ever created, while Ruchetta Banjerly reflects on how vanity galleries scam artists with soul-crushing schemes, Sarah Phillips recounts the horror of a gallery curator that discounted the value of her paintings, and Alexander Augustus shares his feelings about unpaid internships, which are all too common in the art world! Tune in today for Volume 4 of Art World Horror Stories! Key Points From This Episode: Ed Whitmore on how he lost money on an exhibition thanks to a dysfunctional gallery owner. Caitlin Burnett tells the horror story of how all the art she'd ever made was reduced to ash. Listen in as Ruchetta Banjerly recounts the terror of hidden artists' representation fees. Ruchetta tells the story of her personal experience with a soul-crushing art scam in Delhi. Sarah Phillips from Brisbane describes her experience with a curator who told her the ‘story' was more valuable than her paintings. Alexander Augustus shares his tale of exploitation at the hands of an unpaid internship. Ending on a positive note: the key lesson that artists have to advocate for themselves. Designer Marquise Stillwell's new podcast series “The Sweet Flypaper” - borrows its name from “The Sweet Flypaper of Life,” a 1955 fiction and photography book by photographer Roy DeCarava and poet Langston Hughes, describing 1950s Black family life in Harlem, New York City.Joined at the beginning of each episode by friend, educator and Creative Economist, Neil Ramsay, this conversation series responds to a growing need to reexamine how design powers the world and our lives, and its potential to thoughtfully – and poetically – influence societal change. Stillwell firmly believes in the concept of holistic design practices, which, with the help of Ramsay, he uses as a guide to  navigate through the ten episodes of the first season. From Deb Willis' celebration of Black history, joy and progress through photography, to Paola Antonelli's philosophy that design democratization and literacy can be a catalyst for progress, Stillwell takes us on a warm, approachable journey through the nuances of the creative process and their power to change the world.

What are schools really teaching our kids? Are they educating them on information that is actually relevant to our world right now? Most of our schools just aren’t teaching our kids things like how to vote and make wise decisions about policies. Those topics usually aren’t even brought up. That’s why I am so excited to talk with Ashley Berner this week. Ashley is the Director of the John Hopkins Institute for Education Policy. In this position, she helps make the connection between what happens in schools to how prepared students are to be active citizens of a democratic society. In this episode, we are discussing the role parents have in preparing our kids for that kind of conscious citizenship. Tune in to hear some amazing insights from Ashley. Show Highlights: How Ashley defines civics. The 4 adult capacities of an informed citizen. The benefits of watching political speeches and debates with our children and critiquing what we see. Why we should explain our own views and opposing views to our children. How to get your kids engaged in civics if you’re not a political family. The power of explaining the rationale behind our perspectives. Practical things we can do to give our kids a civics education. The importance of engaging in and talking about the suffering in the world with your kids. How to raise your kids to discern between facts and conspiracy theories. What do you get when you take Patrick Dempsey, the writers of The Hangover, the director of The Lion King, and a group of esteemed and notable actors and lock them all up together in a bank overnight? Did you guess Flypaper? No? You've never even heard of it? Oh. Well, you get Flypaper, a 2011 crime comedy that opened at Sundance and then everyone forgot about entirely. Everyone but Leigh. So naturally, she, Brendan, and Chris decided to watch this sweaty heist flick and see what the deal was. Listen, won't you, as we discuss what the hell the tone is trying to be, what's Patrick Dempsey's assortment of quirks supposed to amount to, and the answer to the question that was on everyone's lips the summer of 2011- WHO IS VICELLOUS DRUM??? The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview celebrity James Wilder. His film work included such diverse projects as "Scorchers" with icons Faye Dunaway and James Earl Jones, "Flypaper" opposite Lucy Liu, and "Nevada" alongside Angus McFadden and Gabrielle Anwar. He also appeared in (starred) "The Coriolis Effect," which won The Grand Prize (in its category) at the Venice Film Festival. But it was his scorching depiction of serial killer Carl Isaacs in the acclaimed Miramax film "Murder One" that definitively thrust him into the limelight.  Wilder was featured in the pages of Vanity Fair alongside Alec Baldwin, Meg Ryan, Robin Wright, and Keifer Sutherland, GQ, Detour, and many other high profile titles. Often disinterested in the mainstream roles coming his way, he began turning his attention to the more provocative world of independent films and his passion for design and architecture. Untrained as an architect or interior designer, Wilder's keen eye and distinct vision has transformed a dozen empty lots throughout California into panoramic living art. From gothic to baroque, sleekly modern to vintage chic, each of designs boasts a singularly unique aesthetic, one of which was recognized by HGTV as among LA's top three most outstanding properties alongside a Frank Lloyd Wright design. Slowly the homes he built in his exclusive Hollywood Hills neighborhood have evolved into a loosely-structured artist's retreat inspired by Elia Kazan, Wilder's favorite renegade. Annie Leibovitz, Stanley Tucci, Blake Shelton, Tom Ford, Eddie Van Halen, Jesse James, and Stevie Wonder are just a few of the marquee names who have chosen his properties for photo shoots, exclusive events and long-term inspirational living spaces.
