PDF- https://erickimphotography.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Legs.pdf # Leg Leverage: Your Legs Run the World ## Everyday is Leg Day Instead of spending money on luxury cars like Lamborghinis, Porsches, or Ferraris, consider investing in your legs. ## Your Legs: The Ultimate Lever and Leverage There's a popular meme in fitness circles about "skipping leg day," which highlights how many men focus on their upper bodies—biceps, chest, deltoids—for the sake of appearance, especially in the age of social media and cameras. Before the advent of cameras and mirrors, show muscles were less of a priority. In ancient times, like in the Iliad, the key question was who could defeat whom in battle, not who had the most impressive physique. The ancient Greek heroes, like King Leonidas and the Spartan 300, likely had powerful muscles, but these were concealed by armor and served as a source of physical strength and lethality rather than for display. ## Chest Muscles? Ever since acquiring a 60-pound weight vest, which instantly added several inches to my chest, I've pondered the value of chest muscles in combat. In reality, chest muscles don't contribute significantly to fighting prowess. ## Posture and Sexiness Both men and women aim to look sexy, as evident in formal events like weddings. In marketing, the adage "sex sells" holds true. Brands like Reformation and ALO Yoga capitalize on this by promoting their products as ways to enhance sexiness. Despite ALO Yoga's inferior material quality compared to Lululemon, it appeals to a younger demographic due to its sexier image. ## The Decline of Focus on Sexiness Today's fashion trends often emphasize ugliness over sexiness. However, in places like Los Angeles, sexiness still thrives. As an undergraduate at UCLA, I found LA's emphasis on attractiveness appealing compared to the grungier vibe of UC Berkeley. ## The Importance of Sexiness Sex is crucial for procreation and the continuation of the human race. Intelligent families understand the importance of having children for maintaining their legacy. ## Children are Recession-Proof Contrary to the belief that recessions deter people from having children, families generally continue to have kids. This trend is supported by cities like Irvine, which encourage family growth. ## Privilege of Your Legs Archimedes famously said, "Give me a place to stand, and I shall move the world!" The emphasis is on standing, not sitting. ## Taiko Drumming and Leg Power During a Taiko drumming performance, it was evident that the drummers' power came from their leg stance, highlighting the importance of leg strength. ## Weightlifting that Utilizes Leg Drive Innovating weightlifting techniques that incorporate leg drive could revolutionize upper body workouts. ## Don't Be the Cripple in the Rolls Royce Imagine being bound to a wheelchair for life but owning an unlimited collection of luxury cars. The trade-off isn't worth it, emphasizing the value of mobility. ## Consumerism and Sacrificing Your Legs Many marketed products, like sofas and chairs, promote a sedentary lifestyle, leading to the neglect of leg health. ## The Ultimate Fitness The best exercise is simply moving—walking and staying active. With a 60-pound weight vest, I've mastered this and aim to increase the weight further. ## Generate New Ideas with Your Legs Walking can stimulate creative thinking and innovative ideas. Productive conversations and presentations are often better outdoors while walking. ## The Privilege of Your Legs Mobility is crucial, especially for activities like travel and street photography. Many people work hard to retire and travel, but poor leg health can impede these plans. ## Appreciating Health Health is often underappreciated until it's lost. At a friend's wedding, I realized the true wealth of being healthy. ## Judging Strength: Look at the Legs When evaluating strength, first look at the legs. Real men glorify their leg strength.

"Taiko drumming is a wonderful way to release lots of negative energy and have it transformed into positive energy. " -- Jennifer Weir Podcast Episode Synopsis: In this episode of Unraveling Adoption, host Beth Syverson welcomes guest Jennifer Weir, a Korean adoptee who connected with her Asian identity through Taiko drumming. Jennifer shares her journey of being adopted from South Korea at a young age and growing up in North Dakota with very little Asian representation. Despite facing bullying and struggles with identity, Jennifer found solace in Taiko drumming, eventually becoming the executive director of Taiko Arts Midwest. The episode delves into Jennifer's experience organizing a groundbreaking concert featuring elite women Taiko drummers from Japan, the US, and Canada. The concert, captured in the award-winning documentary Finding Her Beat, highlighted the challenges faced by women in the male-dominated Taiko industry. Arts and culture enthusiast Tommy Sar of St. Paul recommends checking out the screening of a new documentary centering women and nonbinary people in Taiko drumming. Filmed in Minnesota and Japan, “Finding Her Beat” makes its state premiere this weekend during the Sound Unseen film festival. For centuries, only men were allowed to take part in the traditional Japanese art form of Taiko drumming. That has changed in recent years. Sar remembers when performers gathered at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in St. Paul several years ago, which is featured in the film. Sar called the documentary of the performers' Taiko journeys “moving and powerful,” with high-energy performances. Don't see video? Click here. The first showing of the film on Friday has sold out, but there is a second showing Sunday at 8:15 p.m. at the Parkway Theater in Minneapolis. Virtual tickets are also available. Amateur guitarist Chuck House of St. Paul plans to attend the next concert in the Minnesota Guitar Society's new Jazz and Fingerstyle Guitar Concert series. The concert on Tuesday features two talented local guitar duos playing hot club jazz. At 6 p.m. the Red Hot Django Peppers duo Ryan Picone and Jose Betanzos show off the intricate fingerwork and swinging rhythms of late Romani guitarist Django Reinhardt. Famous for his improvisations, Reinhardt didn't write his compositions down. Instead this Twin Cities duo will play a mix of original arrangements and tunes adopted from recordings by Reinhardt and his fans. From 7 to 9 p.m., guitarists Pavel Jany and Dean Harrington take the stage with a variety of styles including swing. The event is free, but seating is limited at MetroNOME Brewery in St. Paul. Don't see video? Click here: As an artist in southwestern Minnesota, Lucy Tokheim of Dawson has seen the ripple effect first-hand of the long career of Franz Allbert Richter in nearby Clarkfield. Richter, who recently turned 80, worked closely with Minnesota poets Robert Bly and Bill Holm, creating drawings from many of Bly's books during the Seventies Press period. A collection of Franz Allbert Richter's pencil drawings and clay folk figures, titled “A Life in Art,” is at Madison Mercantile, which has a gallery space, in Madison, Minn. The show's opening is Thursday at 7 p.m., when Pioneer PBS will interview fans of Richter's work for a “Postcards” episode to air next year. The work will be on view through the month of November. Tokheim notes that many of Richter's drawings from the 1970s and 80s were completed at a time when good art photography was scarce, making it difficult to preserve copies of original drawings. She says this gathering of even a portion of Richter's work is a great opportunity.

SummaryWalking is something you probably don’t think about often. It’s sort of like breathing, we just do it. Dr. Kimberly Powell shares with us today that there is so much more to walking! She breaks down how she was inspired early in her career by Howard Gardner and his Multiple Intelligences Theory, and later actually got a chance to work with him. Her early interest in psychology has led her down many paths, and more currently she is working with communities that have experienced some sort of social, cultural, or racial marginalization… and she does it all through art. Our conversation takes us down the path of a research project she did with Japanese-Americans in San Jose California and “storywalks” and “placemaking.” She even breaks down how these strategies can be applied to many different age and subject areas. It's such a privilege and honour to present this podcast today with the Year 5 students (aged 10), and teachers at Ilfracombe's Church of England Junior School. As a parent of 2 boys under the age of 10, I find the whole conversation about kids online to be incredibly negative and over sensationalised in the media. In an effort to have a more positive discussion, I approached my son's school and asked them could I do a podcast about the subject with the Year 5 teachers and students. The school not only embraced the idea but added a whole layer of additional creativity and flair to the discussion that I could never have imagined, likened to "opening Pandora's Box" by Catherine Cox, the Head Teacher. In this podcast you will hear from Maggie Foster, an Assistant Head Teacher and Head of Music at the school, whose passion and love of her subject is transforming the lives of the children in the school. We hear from Maggie and the pupils about how the Church of England School Values of Wisdom, Hope, Community and Dignity, are shaping the children's lives, both on and offline.Even more so, how music is at the heart of everything the school does, and how the Principles of Taiko drumming, which is a Japanese art of drumming, has recently been adopted by the school. The children share how these Principles can be extended out across all manner of experiences both on and offline. We also hear about the benefits of drumming and what it's like to experience a Taiko drumming session. In addition we share fly-on-the-wall discussions in the class rooms between the children and the teachers as they talk about podcasting, digital media, and how to present themselves positively online. There is so much richness to this podcast and whilst I initially went into the school as a concerned, worried parent, I left feeling humbled, uplifted and inspired by what I heard and experienced whilst being at the school. I would like to extend a massive thank you to the Year 5 teachers who are; James Clatworthy, Kimberley Campbell, Lauren Caller, Phoebe Reed, Will Speed, Rachael Moore and Jo Parsons and a heartfelt thank you to Maggie Foster and Catherine Cox whose total commitment to the subject and the discussion enabled this to happen. To my incredible Sound Engineer and Producer, Will Flisk, who attended and recorded 10 hours of content in the classrooms and helped bring the podcast to life in the studio with me.But most importantly I would like to say a huge thank you to the wonderful children in Year 5. You are so very special and you know so much, you guys are truly inspirational and I want to thank you for being so open and free with your conversation, knowledge and kindness. Together with your teachers, we have turned the conversation about kids online on its head, and you will uplift so many people with your positive messages, insight and voices.Thank you so very much.Fiona xxxAdditional Note;'Drop in the Ocean' is featured in this podcast. Well Folks, it's been a long time coming, but here at last is Episode 5 of the Global Drum Network podcast. This time we're taking a long, hard look at the visceral, epic percussive art that is TAIKO DRUMMING, as practised by the mighty MUGENKYO TAIKO DRUMMERS. They're Europe's only touring Taiko ensemble, and they're thunderously good. In Bob's exclusive interview, Mugenkyo's founder NEIL MACKIE gives us the lowdown on all things Taiko, the group itself and he takes us on a walk-through of the individual instruments ontsage prior to curtain-up. Coming up next month is DON POWELL of glam rock giants SLADE ( and it's not even CHRISTMAAAASSS!! ). Get your platform boots on for that one!
