Take life slow and life's too short to to be walking fast. I always try to stop and smell the roses and try not to rush places and try to try to enjoy it. Try to enjoy the journey instead of focusing on the destination, Life definitely moves by fast. I know, I'm super young, I'm only 27. I shouldn't be saying all this stuff. But like the last 8 years, my life has flown by pretty fast. I'm almost 30 years old now. So it definitely, definitely flows. Gosh, it literally feels like not too long ago. I was a sophomore freshman in college. That's something that I tried to live by that philosophy, just to try to be present and try to try to slow it down a little bit. Get off social media. Stop watching Netflix and get outside. Go look at some trees or something? Life's too short. More importantly, they're fleeting, so leaning into them, if you think it's like an online platform or whatever, if it's FYI, if it's Jason in his constituency, lean into it in a big way, and just really own it. Don't switch don't look for the next thing. A lot of people have one idea about a system and they're like, oh, this next system looks so much better because it's the system 2.0 Why? Today we have a special guest, David Subar. David is the Founder and Managing Partner of Interna. A firm that helps technology companies make better products faster. And David has worked with organizations of various sizes from small six member startups to large companies such as Pluto, which was sold to Viacom. Lynda.com, which was sold to LinkedIn and the Walt Disney Company. So today we're going to discuss how to beat your roadmapping culture. What does that mean? Well, every company has a culture around roadmapping and how they make decisions about roadmaps, which features get prioritized, which strategies to pursue, etc. And sometimes those cultures are explicit, and sometimes they're not. But every company has one. So what could you do to improve your roadmapping culture at your company?

In this episode, we will look at how you could beat Uber. Uber currently has a market cap of about $60 billion. Its peak share was around $60 or so. They famously disrupted the taxi industry. But if you open the app, you can see what else they're getting into such as food delivery, rental cars, mass transit, and package delivery. Their main direct competitor is Lyft. So what has Lyft done to take share and differentiate? They targeted different needs at one point, for example, safety and emotional needs around connecting with drivers. Essentially trying to make a trip a social experience. So did that work? Well, their market cap today is about $12 billion or so. But they're still only worth about 20% of Uber. So how would you compete with Uber?

Twitter, of course, has been in the news because Elon Musk has entered an agreement to buy the company and possibly transform it into something else. But what we want to ask is, regardless of what happens with Elon Musk, what would you do to beat Twitter? What is Twitter's real function in the world? Why are people hiring Twitter? If you took the perspective that Twitter was actually a competitor, and you wanted to compete with them and create a different service, how would you go about doing it and could Jobs-to-be-Done give you insights in beating Twitter even after Elon Musk buys the platform? Or it could be a way that Twitter itself could improve?

In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge talks to the founder and CEO of https://www.thrv.com/ (Thrv), Jay Haynes. Thrv is an enterprise product management software application. In essence, they build software that helps teams build better products. They have some amazing customers, too – Microsoft, American Express, eBay, Twitter, and more.  Josh and Jay explore where Thrv fits in operationally for businesses – they are on the extreme front end of innovation. If you want to know what your customer wants, this is the route for you. There's a ton of work this software can do to mitigate your risks when you begin the development of a product. Once you build this product, you're spending money. You only earn revenue once the market starts to buy.  Jay shares that you really need to know about what your customer really wants – at the end of the day, they don't necessarily love your widget, but they love what it does. Your products need to be solution-focused and actually solve a problem in the market.  Jay also talks about why certain endeavors fail when you're copying competitors. The problem is that these companies often copy the products themselves, not what their competitors are doing. The problem with this logic is that it doesn't account for innovation or actually seeking to improve upon a previous technological iteration. Don't focus on what your competitors are doing – focus on what your customers need.  Jay shares that Thrv works with enterprises as well as small to medium sized businesses and start-ups. He says they want to work with teams that are innovation-focused and are going to be well integrated into your team and business. This will put your customer front and center. If you put the customer's struggles first, it increases product development, which boosts sales. Everything you do should be to improve the customer experience.  At the end of the day, if you put your customers and the market first, you will see innovation take center stage. Josh shares an insight that he believes is tried and true; you aren't smarter than the market. Future-proof and anticipate what your next solution needs to be. Assume your current solution will become irrelevant, so always plan for the next version of what you will bring to the market.  Jay shares that Thrv has plenty of resources on their website, including an ebook, blog, free demo, and more.  Check out Thrv's ebook at https://www.thrv.com/app/ (https://www.thrv.com/app/)  Check out Thrv at https://www.thrv.com/ (https://www.thrv.com/)  Check out Jay Haynes on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/jayhaynes/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jayhaynes/).  Check out Thrv on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/company/thrv-com/ (https://www.linkedin.com/company/thrv-com/).  Don't forget to subscribe to The Thoughtful Entrepreneur and thank you for listening. It's worth noting that this was back when you had to pay a quarter to play a video game. His Dad was a navy pilot, and a hobbyist sail plane flyer, which Jay flew as well, even up to 30,000 feet in the air! As he says, he got grounded as soon as he got married and had 4 kids.Early in his career, Jay got into finance and quickly became familiar with using debt to get equity returns. However, he was always interested in the core innovation problem - of why customers buy new products, and why they switch. Throughout his career, time at Microsoft, schooling, startup life, etc. - he found out that no one really had a secret sauce to innovation. He started evaluating new ways to do it, and came across the Jobs to Be Done theory, which became the foundation to what he has built today. This is the creation story of THRV.SponsorsCourierImg.lyRoutableCTO.aiCloudways offers peace of mind and flexibility so you can focus on growing your business instead of dealing with server management. Global Product Management Talk is pleased to bring you the next episode of... The Everyday Innovator with host Chad McAllister, PhD. The podcast is all about helping people involved in innovation and managing products become more successful, grow their careers, and STANDOUT from their peers. About the Episode: Jobs-to-be-Done (JTBD) is a valuable tool for product managers and innovators, and there are different thoughts on how to actually put it into optimal practice. Our guest, Jay Haynes, is helping that problem by creating the first and only JTBD software for product, marketing, and sales teams. He founded THRV (pronounced Thrive) to make that happen. Also, Jay has three decades of innovation experience and has helped Microsoft, Dropbox, eBay, Twitter, American Express, Oracle, Target, and others.
