As many of you know, I started my career in the travel industry as a travel advisor for STA Travel. I worked in a few of their branches before moving up into their head office in the UK. When I sold travel we were paid commission on EVERYTHING, even domestic air. It was also an era where travelers still didn't have smartphones and most had no access to the internet. The big yellow booking engine and that little blue gnome were not yet household names, and nobody thought they knew more about booking travel than their travel agent. It was still an age where we picked up our tickets in person from the travel agency, and when we checked in at the airline counter we were asked for our "ticket and passport please Mam". It was also a time in history when it was totally OK to smoke on flights - that didn't end until the late 90s! But that's a whole other story. My honest feeling, having watched the industry evolve over the past 22 years, is that we moved away from professional travel planners, to the big booking engines, and now a great majority of those who used to DIY their own travel are now hesitant to do so. Last week I sat down to buy travel insurance for my family as we get ready to fly to France for two weeks. Before I knew it I had 22 tabs open on my screen and I was confused. I switched tasks to stop from getting frustrated. But my next task, booking train tickets and car transfers also made me uncertain. Me... 22 years of industry experience felt for the first time in my life, unqualified to book my own travel. I felt unsure of the rules, unsure of the protocols. I feared making a mistake. So I picked up the phone and paid a $250 planning fee and handed my entire worry list over to a travel advisor. In the past few days, we have given her another $250 for another trip and sent a friend her way. A friend who is an avid online book. My goal in 2022 is that all 30, 000 travel advisors that follow me, are members of our community and take our training, ALL start to charge I am determined to pull each and every single one of you to a place where you feel proud and confident of your planning fees.

How I Got Here - Inside stories from innovation and startups in travel
The concept of upmarket hostel accommodation was, some argue, fairly alien in the youth travel sector until fairly recently.Generator Hostels was a single-property brand in London, launched in the mid-1990s, but was considered the perfect place to try out a new approach to the sector when Josh Wyatt came onboard in 2007 with a pile of venture money. The hostel was overhauled and reopened with, as he puts it, "design and experience" at the center.Within a few years, the brand had expanded quickly to launch a string of facilities in a number of countries, indicating that the youth travel market had evolved and become more aware of the aesthetics of a stay, triggered in part by the self-conscious world of social media.Wyatt continued with Generator until 2016, when he left to eventually launch the NeueHouse brand, where he is now CEO.He joins us at the latest guest on How I Got Here, as we launch the third season of our podcast.HIGH is a weekly show produced by PhocusWire and Mozio, aimed at getting the inside stories behind startups and innovation in travel and transportation. It's hosted by PhocusWire's editor in chief, Kevin May, and Mozio co-founder and CEO David Litwak.
In this episode, Jeannette speaks to Lisa Fitzell who is an international businesswoman who has worked in the travel industry for 33 years. Lisa is the managing director of Elegant Resorts. She shares what she has learned while working in several countries and rising through the ranks with some of the best brands in travel such as Lunn Poly, TUI, STA Travel, Stella, Austravel, Diethelm and Elegant Resorts. Her and Jeannette discuss how reaching burnout and nearly dying from meningitis fundamentally changed the way Lisa approaches her life and career. Lisa grabs every opportunity. She explains how to do this without burning out, the role of mindset, mentors and never giving up on your goals. Lisa shares her thoughts on how to build a strong team, develop your future leaders and continually improving what you do. KEY TAKEAWAYS Love what you do but be careful to not let your job totally define you, so you get out of balance. Repeat clients and being recommended is the recipe for success for any business As a leader, you need to let go a bit and trust your team. You can´t do it all. Really look after your people. Investing in their wellness will pay for itself. Say yes when you are offered opportunities, you can use the skills you already have to work everything out and learn new ones. You do not have to have been to university to be able to succeed and grow. Treat every company you work for as if it is your own. Imposter syndrome is a big issue, you have to recognise it in yourself and work to eliminate it. Invest time in looking after yourself. If you don´t you will burn out and not be able to be there for your family and colleagues. Never feeling good enough can be incredibly damaging, so you need to watch out for this and be kind to yourself When things go wrong, e.g., COVID-19, look after your customers. Doing so builds loyalty and brings them back to you later. Having a good network of friends helps you in many ways. Create headspace for yourself. Take the time to switch off. Walking or yoga are good for this. Drop the guilt as a working mum and cut yourself some slack Find a morning routine that sets you up for the day. Don´t be afraid to move fast in business. Perfection does not exist, so there is no point in planning everything to the eighth degree. BEST MOMENTS ‘Getting your repeat clients and being recommended, that's the recipe for any good business to grow’ ‘You only live once, so don´t ever turn anything down´ ‘Really look after your people, and they'll thrive as a result of it’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Brave, Bold, Brilliant podcast series ABOUT THE HOST Jeannette Linfoot is a highly regarded senior executive, property investor, board advisor, and business mentor with over 25 years of global professional business experience across the travel, leisure, hospitality, and property sectors. The amount owed to creditors of the failed travel group STA has soared to more than $10 million, with customers told there's little chance of getting their hard earned cash back. Nearly a month on from the company's closure, administrators Deloitte are still trying to figure out where money owed to Kiwi travellers has gone. Meanwhile the former head of the company's New Zealand arm says he too is a victim of its downfall. Checkpoint reporter Nick Truebridge tried to trace the cash.

Meanwhile, with another travel company closing its doors, thousands of travellers who'd booked trips with STA Travel could find themselves out of pocket. Here's RNZ reporter, Sarah Robson on the ongoing battle to get their money.

Great opportunities don't come everyday, but Dick Porter, the co-founder of STA Travel and Director of STA Travel Group has been taking every opportunity for the last 40 years in the UK. A self proclaimed “average student” at UWA, Dick embarked on a trip to the UK and has remained there ever since. By 1976, suffering from the huge oil shock flowing from the 1973 ‘Yom Kippur’ War, much of the European travel industry had failed or required government subsidy to continue. Seizing the opportunity, Dick co-founded STA Travel in 1979, which has continued to advise young people on holidays and adventures abroad, offering a unique range of flights, accommodation, tours and expeditions in 90 countries. Today, STA Travel has more than 400 branches worldwide and sends more than six million passengers away each year. In this interview Dick shares how a freak accident during university changed the trajectory of his career, what a business leader looks like, the impact of mentoring and the alumni network in the UK, and the importance for students and alumni to travel.
